"Knowledge of slag properties is required for the optimisation of smelting operations. The phase equilibria and viscosities of the Al2O3-CaO-FeO-Fe2O3-MgO-MnO-NiO-Cr2O3-SiO2 slags at conditions of interest to Koniambo Ni-laterite smelting operations have been investigated. High-temperature re-equilibration phase equilibrium experiments of industrial slags followed by rapid quenching and direct measurement of phase compositions using electron probe X-ray microanalysis (EPMA) have been undertaken in the olivine and pyroxene primary phase fields at temperatures between 1475 and 1600°C and SiO2/MgO weight ratios between 1.57 and 2.09. Phase equilibria predictions were performed using FactSage thermodynamic software. A slag viscosity model available in the FactSage thermodynamic package has been used to calculate the viscosities of the liquid slags. The Einstein-Roscoe equation combined with the predicted phase equilibria data have been used to estimate the viscosities of the slag slurries (slag + solids). The information provided can be used to assist in the evaluation of the furnace performance, to assess further optimisation of slag composition and to explore possibilities of targeted feed changes.INTRODUCTION One of the key steps in the production of ferronickel from nickel laterite ore at Koniambo Nickel SAS involves reduction and smelting of pre-dried nickel-bearing saprolitic ore (high Mg and Si) in an electric furnace at temperatures up to 1650°C. The characterisation of the slag properties as functions of key operational parameters, such as, temperature and composition, including liquidus, the proportions of solids and viscosity, is essential for improving control and optimisation of the operations. The slag produced in the smelting process is a complex oxide system with the major chemical components including Al2O3, CaO, Cr2O3, “FeO”, MgO, “MnO”, “NiO” and SiO2. Characterisation of these multi-component systems using a solely experimental approach becomes increasingly complex as the number of components is increased."

"This contribution reports recent mineral sorting experience and lists the opportunities of the newest generation of automatic sorters with a special focus on electromagnetic detection and Xray transmission. With the available sensor resolutions and actuator systems that are available today sorting of minerals down to 2 mm size and up to 250 mm lump size is technically feasible. In industry, ore as well as coal is still hand-picked and current automation potential only utilised in a handful of specific applications. Recently a number of technological developments took place that may increase sorting potential, save mill costs and lead to lower overall tonnage costs.They are:??High speed and high resolution sorting systems based on X-ray transmission imaging??High speed on-line image processing and further development of advanced data processing??Modular multi-sensor automatic sorting units (using one or more sensors such as colour, electromagnetic and X-ray in a single device)??Sensitive electromagnetic sensors for sorting based on differences in magnetic susceptibility and electric conductivityThe above enables compact dry separation, insensitive for moisture fluctuations and at high separation sharpness, as well as “electronic” high gradient magnetic separation for larger particles. Besides conventional X-ray transmission (XRT), dual-energy XRT (DE-XRT) is now being redesigned to meet the requirements of the mining industry. The mentioned technologies provide automatic dry separation of minerals and rock as alternative for conventional processing."

"In the flotation of ultramafic ores at Thompson mill, Inco Limited, CMC is used as both a floatable rock depressant and electrostatic serpentine slime dispersant. CMC, being a high molecular weight polymer, creates a serious handling problem in its introduction into the flotation processes. Typically, it is added as a 1-3% solution. This requires an enormous handling facility and makes its metallurgical gains uneconomical.Laboratory studies have shown that dry CMC addition as opposed to wet addition is feasible, as long as sufficient conditioning time is provided. Dry CMC addition into the grinding mill is also possible but its effectiveness is slightly reduced as compared to dry addition after grinding mills. Dry CMC addition using a vibratory feeder into the mill discharge is successfully applied in the treatment of ultramafic ores at Thompson mill.INTRODUCTIONManitoba Division MineralogyAt Inco’s Manitoba Division, two distinctly different sulphide ores are processed at the Thompson mill - primarily by froth flotation. The Thompson and Birchtree mines are both located within the Thompson Nickel belt. Sulphide mineralogy is relatively simple and includes both hexagonal and monoclinic pyrrhotite, pentlandite and minor chalcopyrite hosted in metasedimentary and metavolcanic rocks. The significant difference between the two mines is the amount of ultramafic rock associations in the host material. Increasingly, more of the ultramafic associated ores from the Birchtree mine are being processed through the mill with a characteristic poor metallurgy."

"IntroductionASBESTOS FLOATS may be defined briefly as blends of air-borne particles of fibrous asbestos and dusts produced during the milling stages and collected by Cottrell precipitators, dust sheds, or bag-houses.The various grades of asbestos floats on the market contain fibrous asbestos particles ranging in length from microscopic to approximately 1/4-inch. The fines or dusts present in the floats are from 40 microns to 2 microns or less in cross-section.Airborne asbestos particles are of diverse length because they are collected at numerous places in the mill. There are: (1) dusts removed from dry rock storage bins, (2) dusts removed from rock and fiber screens, (3) particles from the tops of collectors, and (4) fines removed by suction from the processing equipment. Sometimes the airborne particles are kept segregated, so that there is a partial separation by gravity. This is accomplished by a series of dust chambers enclosed in a long, rectangular building. The longest and heaviest particles fall nearest to the air flow entrance, the smallest at a point farthest away and nearest the exit. Sometimes the air from the dust chamber building is passed through a series of bag-houses or electric :precipitators ,to collect the extremely fine particles which normally escape to the atmosphere."

"MINING operations at the Star Key Mine provided an example of a small-scale prairie-type coal mine that employed several interesting procedures and achieved good productivity with low capital expenditures. The mine was located about 11 miles north of the city of Edmonton, on the north side of the Sturgeon River valley. It opened in 1945 and operated until 1979. Output in the winters reached about 500 tons a day in the late 1940s, but in the spring and summer periods activity was usually limited to only servicing and development work. In the later years of the mine's life sales fell to less than 100 tons per day. Most of its output was bought for domestic use in furnaces and stoves so production of large sizes was desired. A modest market for stoker coal did exist for a time. Screenings (-5 / 8 in.) were sold to the city's power plant until it converted to natural gas and were also used for thawing frozen ground for work on pipelines. These markets were comparatively small and the small sizes did not command as high a price as did the larger sizes. However the extension of natural gas services to rural markets cut into the domestic heating market and finally led to closure of the mine. The coal was strong when freshly mined, but because of its high inherent moisture content, about 25%, it did not store well on surface but tended to disintegrate. It was of subbituminous Crank with a heating value of about 8000 Btu per pound and burned with a clean flame. The seam mined was in the Edmonton Formation, of Upper Cretaceous age, at a depth of 60 to 80 ft below the surface. The seam in the mine area was about 11 feet in thickness but thinned gradually to the north and south and split to the west (1). It was approximately horizontal but gentle rolls in the floor of several feet in height necessitated brushing in places to produce suitable haulage grades. The floor material was of bone and clay, overlying a thin layer of coal. Above the seam there were only a few feet of mudstones and weak sandy shales while the remainder of the overburden was clay and unconsolidated glacial till and surface soil. Because of the soft floor and weak roof material the miners usually left about a foot of coal in the floor to provide a firm working surface and about a foot of coal above the rooms and two feet of coal above the entries to provide a competent roof."

"A large-scale panel destress blast was fired at Brunswick mine in the fall of 1999 in order to reduce the ground stresses in a critically important neighbouring mining region. This work, sponsored by the Mining Division of CAMIRO and Brunswick mine, consisted in heavily choke-blasting — and subsequently leaving in place — a massive waste sulphide pillar in the southwest end of the 1000 m level. This paper describes the approach and design methodology used to try to maximize breakage in the rock mass in the area to destress, while minimizing damage to critical infrastructures in the vicinity. The loading operations, as well as the results of the blast — in terms of its field performances, as recorded by near-field blast vibration monitoring equipment, visual postblast assessments and measured impact on the regional stress field — are discussed as well. A brief comparison between the measured stress changes and inelastic numerical modelling of the test site is also presented.Un tir à grande échelle de relâchement des contraintes dans un pilier a été effectué à la mine Brunswick à la fin de l’automne 1999 dans le but de diminuer les contraintes de terrain dans une très importante zone de production adjascente. Ces travaux, financés par la division minière de CAMIRO et la mine Brunswick, consistaient à tirer violemment sans aucune face libre, et à laisser en place, un pilier de sulphures massifs au sud-ouest du niveau 1000 m. Cet article décrit l’approche et la démarche conceptuelle utilisées pour tenter de maximiser les fractures dans le pilier visé, tout en minimisant les dommages collatéraux à des infrastructures critiques se trouvant dans les environs immédiats. "INTRODUCTION Wright Engineers Limited is active and has extensive experience in the design of pressure oxidation plants for the treatment of refractory gold ore and concentrate. In addition to the Mercur oxidation facility, similar projects undertaken during the last few years include the 3000 ton per day acid oxidation plant for the Getchell Mine, Nevada, a concentrate treatment autoclave for Asamera in 1984 and a feasibility study of a 50-tons per day autoclave plant for Consolidated Professor's Duport property in Ontario. The Equity Silver antimony and arsenic precipitation autoclaves, and the low pressure autoclaves at Key Lake Uranium in Northern Saskatchewan were also engineered by Wright in recent years.In August 1986, Wright was retained by Barrick Resources (U.S.A.) Inc. to add a 750 tpd pressure oxidation circuit to the existing mill at their Mercur Gold Mine, Utah. This paper describes this facility and outlines the start up in the spring of 1988 and subsequent successful operation. MERCUR OPERATION The Barrick Mercur Gold Mine is located at the south end of the Oquirrh Mountains in Tooele County, Utah. The carbon-in-leach (CIL) process plant camnenced operation in 1983 with a design throughput of 3000 tpd and has since been expanded to handle rrore than 5000 tpd. 'IWo ore types are mined, an oxide ore and a refractory ore, which is by Barrick's definition ""an ore from which less than 60% gold extraction is achieved by a standard CIL amenability test."" Typical of many sulphidic/carbonaceous ores, the refractory gold does not respond well to the cyanidation process. As a result, refractory ore has been stockpiled since the start of mining. As of June 1987, Mercur had about 570,000 tons of refractory ore stockpiled and 5.7 million tons of proven and probable reserves, grading 0.06 oz/t including approximately 3.5 million tons of tailings from the previous operation grading 0.55 oz/t. In 1986, Barrick decided to build a 750 ton per day pressure oxidation plant to process these ores. The process, for which a patent was granted, comprises pressure oxidation of the sulphides in an alkaline environment. It was developed in 1981 but was set aside in preference of a CIL plant treating only oxide ores by the previous owner of the property, Getty Oil. This process is capable of increasing gold recovery from the refractory ore from as low as 35% by conventional CIL processing to more than 85%. In 1986 Wright Engineers was engaged to undertake a feasibility study based on batch testing. This lead to a decision by Barrick Mercur later that year to build the commercial pressure oxidation plant. Wright was awarded the contract for engineering, procurement, construction managernent and commissioning in March 1987. The plant was mechanically complete in January 28, 1988, and was in operation by February 1988."

The Al-Mg-Sc-Zr alloys have shown exceptional potential as structural materials for transportation applications. These alloys have proved to be good candidates to be processed as thin strips via the Horizontal Single Belt Casting (HSBC) process. The HSBC process is a near-net-shape casting technology, which involves casting molten metal directly into thin strips, close to the final product thickness, at high cooling rates. It offers an efficient, economical and environmentally-friendly approach to the production of metal strips. Fluid mechanics and associated heat transfer are important aspects of any casting process, and the novel HSBC process is no exception. Three dimensional Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations using ANSYS FLUENT 14.5 were performed, in order to assess the importance and effects of the various operational conditions of the HSBC process. This enabled process parameter optimization. Numerical predictions were validated against experimental casting results.

"Kahama Mining Corporation Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Barrick Gold Corporation, poured the first dore bar and filtered the first concentrate produced at the Bulyanhulu mine on February 28, 2001. This event marked the completion of the initial development of the Bulyanhulu Mine – Barrick’s first mine located outside of the Americas.Bulyanhulu is a 2,500 tpd underground mine located in the Lake Victoria gold belt of northern Tanzania. Gold is recovered as a gravity concentrate and smelted on site to produce dore bars or collected in copper concentrate that is shipped to offshore smelters. The facilities were constructed to meet Canadian standards. Unit operations include single stage crushing, SAG milling, gravity recovery, flotation, thickening and dewatering. Tailings are converted to paste and returned underground as paste backfill or pumped to the surface tailing site. The surface paste tailing disposal system is believed to be first of its kind in the gold industry. Paste disposal has several advantages over slurry, including lower dam construction costs, reduced water losses, and lower reclamation costs. This paper describes the facilities and discusses the challenges faced during development and construction including logistics, lack of infrastructure, recruiting and training, security, and social issues as well as initial operating results.INTRODUCTIONBarrick Gold Corporation completed the Bulyanhulu mine development in 2001. Capital cost of the project was US$280 million. The mine produced 241,575 ounces from start of milling to year end at a total cash cost of $197 per ounce. Numerous challenges were overcome in the mine’s development due to the general lack of infrastructure in Tanzania and the mine’s location some 1200 km inland by road from the port of Dar es Salaam."

"Rare earth elements have unique properties because of the special electronic structure. In this paper the improvement of refractory material performance by the light rare earth oxides was introduced. The experiments showed that adding a bit of rare earth oxide could obviously improve the performance of the refractory material. INTRODUCTIONIn recent years, refractory materials are widely applied in the steel smelting process as a ladle lining material. In China, although the total production of fire-proof material exceeds normal demand, but the quality and variety of fire-proof material still have a big gap with world advanced level. A number of refractory products need to be imported from abroad. With the rapid development of domestic steel production, the ladle lining with refractory is gradually running after the world advanced level on production technology, production variety, and quality level. It replaces some imported products meeting the needs of the development of the iron making production. Therefore, there is an important significance to research on solving the problems of the ladle refractory reasonably and avoiding or reducing blind and not proper use of the imported refractory ( Jing, 2007).On the other hand, rare earth oxide has some special excellent properties. Firstly, they are very good refractory materials with their high melting point;Next, they have good resistance to water and alkali resistance function;Thirdly, it is easy for rare earth oxide to generated composite oxide reacting with other metal oxide,achieving the purpose to improving the material properties (Xu, 1978; Diao, 1979). China has a variety of rare earth resources,and rare earth resources is more advantageous in Baotou,taking up about 36 percent of world reserves,which is the world's top of rare earth mineral. In recent years the rare earth products output has risen sharply and many varieties and specifications have appeared. So it is necessary to study the new field of rare earth compound to open up new markets. Thus, it has a very vital significance to promote the further development of rare earth industry, adjust the rare earth products structure, ease the contradiction between supply and demand, and improve refractory products quality and grade in order to better serve the main body production.I In this paper, the experiments are mainly for 210 tons of Al2O3-MgO style series refractory materials belong to ladle lining bag from Baotou Iron & Steel Group Corporation Sheet Factory. "The Nd-Fe-B scrap was placed in Fe crucible with pure Mg in an Ar atmosphere, and the scraps were melted using an induction heating method. The effects of experimental parameters such as melting temperature (range of 993K to 1073K) and holding time (15min-600min) on the ability of extraction were investigated. The microstructure and diffusion layers were analyzed by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS), and the constituent phases were characterized using XRay Diffraction (XRD). Diffusion of Nd through the Nd-Fe-B scrap into liquid Mg was described, and the diffusion coefficient of Nd in liquid Mg was estimated.INTRODUCTIONNd-Fe-B magnets are usually produced either from comminuted melt-spun ribbons as bonded magnets or hot pressed bulk magnets, or by sintering in conjunction with prior green compaction in an applied magnetic field (Sagawa et al., 1984). These magnets have been widely used for various electromechanical and electronic devices such as voice coil motors (VCMs) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) (Samardzija et al., 2012; Matsuura et al., 2006). The production of the Nd-Fe-B magnets is increasing by about 20% per year because of their excellent magnetic properties. However, the expansion of Nd-Fe-B magnet market induced a concern for the scarcity of Nd at the aspect of natural resource. Therefore, the development of an effective recycling process for Nd-Fe-B magnet scraps is an extremely important issue from the viewpoint of resource and energy conservation. Several recycling processes for the Nd-Fe-B magnets have been proposed (Uda et al., 2002; Lyman et al., 1993]. It has been reported that the best separation of rare-earths from the Nd-Fe-B magnets is obtained by sulfuric acid dissolution followed by precipitation of recyclable rare-earth salts. However, this process can make a large amount of waste water including dangerous solutions. Recently, (Xu et al., 2000) have reported a technique to extract Nd from 18Nd-72.4Fe-0.9B-1.82Pr-5.3Dy (wt.%) magnet scrap by using liquid metal extraction (LME) processing. However, these techniques seemed to be difficult for application, because the scraps consist of an infinitesimal amount of other minor elements (Pr, Dy, Cu, Al and Tb), and these minor elements can make a new intermetallic compounds with Mg. Also, some oxides or the plated Ni metal can be preventable to reaction between solid-liquid (S/L) interfaces. For these reasons, the substantive reaction mechanism between Mg and Nd-Fe-B scrap is not clear. In this study, the simple composition of 33Nd-66Fe-1B (wt.%) magnet scraps were prepared using an induction melting process. The effects of the experimental parameter on the diffusion properties between Mg and scraps were investigated to determine whether these methods could be used in industrial application in a liquid metal extraction (LME) process."

"I. INTRODUCTIONA significant development in flotation over the past few years has been the increasing industrial use of flotation columns, primarily in Canada. The column differs dramatically from conventional mechanical flotation machines, both in design end operating philosophy, which has been a principal reason for its slow acceptance by the mineral industry. Boutin, Tremblay and Wheeler (1. 2) developed the concept in the early 1960's and since then plant and laboratory columns have been marketed commercially by Column Flotation Company of Canada Ltd. In 1980-81 at Mines Gaspe, Quebec, three columns replaced 13 conventional cleaners in a molybdenum upgrading circuit, with superior results (3). Since then many of the copper producers in British Columbia have installed columns for copper and molybdenum cleaning, including Gibraltar, Lornex, Highmont and Island Copper. There now appears to be widespread interest in flotation columns.The column is particularly attractive for applications involving multiple cleaning stages and can upgrade In a single stage compared with several stages of mechanical cells. This results in simpler, more controllable circuits. Importantly, the column itself is well suited to computer control. A significant problem, however, has been that of translating laboratory data to plant performance. The purposes of this communication are to address the problem of column scale-up and to describe some of the transport mechanisms of a flotation column, leading to a kinetics based model.A schematic of a flotation column is shown in Figure]. Industrial columns are up to 13 m high and 0.3 to 1.8 m in cross section (either square or circular). Three zones can be identified:a collection zone, with feed entering 2 to 3 m below the top of the column and descending against rising bubbles generated at a gas sparger; a washing zone, where a packed bubble bed is generated by a downward flow of wash water; and a conventional froth (2 - 5 cm thick), the sole purpose of which is particle transport to the launder. The tailings withdrawal at the bottom of the column is controlled at a rate slightly greater than the feed flowrate (called a positive bias).An important element is the washwater, added just below the froth zone. The component of the washwater that flows downward (to make up the bias) is sufficient to prevent coalescence of rising gas bubbles. The packed bubble beg so generated is very efficient at suppressing gangue entrainment to the concentrate."

"Good morning gentlemen. I am very pleased to have this opportunity to tell you a few of the things that happen within a completely unrelated activity, the electroplating industry, except that it does consume metals and has some slight similarity of problems so far as cyanide is concerned.First, just a few general terms about the industry. It is a relatively unsophisticated industry technically, and in many instances there are serious problems in obtaining staff that can operate the various systems that are currently available for destroying cyanide or precipitating metals.I would suggest to you that if you are investigating any system that you consider very seriously the personnel that are actually going to run it. The installation people; probably have some idea what it is all about but the operators must be chosen for their ability and not because they just happen to be available.We perhaps have another area in common. There is very little money for capital expenditures that produce no immediate return or even eventual return on the investment.The industry is largely made up of ""Jobbers"" who are strictly electroplating. There is another group in which the electroplating is captive as in large companions where it is a convenience operation. Also there are specialists, who do other things besides plating but it is a very major part of their operation. This applies to the automotive parts industry.Cyanide applications in the plating industry will be for copper, zinc, cadmium, silver, brass, and gold. Cyanide waste solutions come from those solutions adhering to the plated parts, and from the occasional discharge of the plating bath solutions. Also, in a related industry, the heat treating people with cyanide case hardening have some high concentrations of cyanide to dispose of. Concentrations of cyanide that we treat are 2500 parts per million or higher especially in wastes from heat treating. Solution volumes might be as low as 100 gallons per hour in a well run, carefully operated rinsing system. It may be as high as 3000 gallons per hour where dilution occurs."

The Thompson Mill has a capacity of 15,000 T ID of ore and produces two grades of nickel concentrate, copper concentrate and occasionally graphite concentrate. Up to July of 1985 we processed two distinct ore types: T-1 ore, averaging 2. 8% Ni and . 2% Cu and Pipe Open Pit ore, averaging . 8% Ni associated with peridotite and serpentine. Presently our ores from T-1 mine and Thompson Open Pit are of the same type and are processed together. (Figure 1)! n October, 1982, we decided to install an Outokumpu Courier 300 on-stream analyser on an initial 6 streams. The equipment was delivered to the mill on May 2, 1983 and the first analyses were generated by June 17th. The calibrations were 35% complete by the mid-July summer shutdown and were completed in the fall. 1. 2 Analyser Slurry Feed System:The key to successful on-stream analysis is delivery of the sample streams to the analyser.Our system uses pressure-thief sampling for collection. (Figure 2) Initially we used thief samplers modelled after the Outokumpu design, with turbulence bars upstream of the collection point. These units have been replaced with simple laterals as they have worn out. Our thief samplers are mounted vertically on pump discharges and we believe sufficient turbulence exists to ensure representative sampling.

IN every co al mine the hazard of fire in the underground workings is always present. This is a natural condition, because the mineral wrought and the supports normally used are themselves combustible and because underground fires may originate in many ways. The main causes of such fires are: (1) Open lights igniting gas, wood, or the coal itself. (2) Explosives igniting gas or coal. (3) Spontaneous combustion. (4) Electric sparks or short circuits igniting gas, wood, or coal. (5) Frictional heat igniting wood, coal, or oily material. (6) Explosions of gas or coal dust igniting wood or coal. The relative importance of these causes, and others less frequently met with, varies from district to district and depends to a great extent on the equipment and supplies used, on the training and discipline maintained among the workmen, and on the liability of the coal to heat spontaneously. It follows, therefore, that open lights should not be used and that, wherever there is the least possibility of methane being encountered, only locked safety lamps of an approved type should be allowed underground. It follows, also, that only 'permitted' explosives should be used and that the it use should be confined to conditions under which they are ?permitted?. Similarly, electric equipment should be of an approved type and all such stationary equipment should be housed in well-ventilated fireproof rooms. Such rooms, as well as entries to stables and oil houses, should be provided with doors which can be easily and tightly closed and which should be constructed of fireproof material.

"The Gakara Rare Earth deposit in Burundi (East Africa) is unique for its high grade (e.g., 54.3% TREO on average) and low uranium and thorium levels. The majority of the light rare earth (RE) elements in material from Gakara are contained within the familiar RE minerals bastnaesite and monazite. Extensive metallurgical test work was conducted by SGS Minerals Services on mineral samples collected from the Gakara deposit. Various whole ore hydrometallurgical processing routes were examined in a scoping level test program. Preliminary beneficiation testing was also conducted, though it was determined that only marginal upgrading would be achieved with significant RE losses. Thus a hydrometallurgical process on whole ore was developed to minimize the overall process complexity and achieve maximum RE recovery. Results from the test work will be presented, along with the selected base case flowsheet involving agitated atmospheric sulphation of the RE minerals, RE double sulphate precipitation, caustic conversion, redissolution, and carbonate precipitation. Following the base case flowsheet, a purified cerium free mixed RE carbonate with low levels of radioactive elements was produced.INTRODUCTIONRainbow Rare Earths Limited (Rainbow) is a mining company engaged in the exploration and development of the Gakara rare earth deposit in Burundi; Figure 1 shows the project location. The project is located in the Bujumbura Province and 45 km from the Burundi capital of Bujumbura. Notable for its exceedingly high in-situ grade – 54.3% on average total rare earth oxide (TREO), low uranium and thorium levels and familiar rare earth minerals, bastnaesite and monazite – Gakara is the world’s richest rare earth deposit. The project, a previously operating mine from 1948–1978, has a significant mineral inventory base, a long life of mine, well understood mineralogy, and robust economics. Rainbow is focused on bringing Gakara into production in the near term, ramping up to produce 5,000 t/y of a 54%+ TREO concentrate."

"AS THE TITLE implies, this paper will deal with the unusual rather than the standard practices as employed . at the property of North Rankin Nickel Mines, Limited. Fortunately •the mining, with the exception of permafrost conditions, and the milling practices, are the normal approaches dictated by the size, type, and character of the orebody. The unusual aspects are linked directly or indirectly to the isolated location and are •principally ancillary requirements or services covering a broad range from climate to supplies and from finance to entertainment. It is our intent to cover the more salient points of interest together with a brief description of the general operation.To understand the primary motivation of the mine, it must be made clear that North Rankin was conceived as a foothold in the Canadian North, that region embracing 40 per cent of the Dominion which ex-tends north of the commercial tree-line and which includes nearly 50 per cent of the Precambrian Shield, our mainstay of Canadian mining. Secondly, this project was born in an atmosphere of premium sales in the nickel markets, assuring a rapid pay-back of the heavy •capital expenditures. And finally, it has •been coddled through the stark reality of a competitive metal market with the hope and trust that the experiences and achievements will lead over the bill to a bigger and better mine in this virgin territory. This is the briefest story of the mine's history, but it pays tribute to the many people who, in thirty years since .discovery, have championed this project."

"The tungsten-bismuth-molybdenum deposit in southwestern New Brunswick occurs in greisenized and silicified tuffite * and feldspar porphyry in and adjacent to volcanic necks. The ore minerals occur as veins and veinlets and as disseminated grains in gangue. These minerals can be grouped into three assemblages. Assemblage 1 consists of oxides and phosphates of W, Ti, Fe, Nb, Sn, Ta and rare-earth elements, with the main minerals being deposited in the sequence wolframite, rutile, cassiterite. Assemblage 2 consists of arsenopyrite, molybdenite and bismuth, and assemblage 3 of sulphides with minor cassiterite and arsenopyrite. Sphalerite is the main sulphide mineral, but it contains minute inclusions of copper-tin- and indium-bearing minerals. Textural relations suggest that most of the elements can be recovered from this ore by conventional mineral beneficiation and extraction methods, but a variety of techniques must be employed. It is expected that the wolframite and molybdenite can be recovered satisfactorily, but poor recoveries are expected for bismuth and cassiterite. A sphalerite concentrate can be readily obtained by flotation, but it would contain a wide variety of elements. It is suggested that leaching be used to recover the bismuth and the elements in the sphalerite concentrate."
