THIS paper is a description of the milling practice and metallurgy at the Moneta Porcupine mine, Timmins, Ontario. The results obtained with an all-cyanide circuit and later with flotation followed by cyanidation are described. The ?investigation which prompted the various changes in milling practice have also been dealt with. Moneta ore is possibly the most refractory now being milled in the Porcupine district. This is due to the ultra fine state in which the gold occurs and to its intimate association with pyrite. No doubt there is ore of similar characteristics on the neighbouring properties but it probably forms only a small portion of the tonnage being mined, whereas at Moneta the bulk of the ore requires an extremely fine grind to liberate the gold. The fineness to which an ore can be ground economically has gone far beyond what was thought to be the limit only a few years ago. Formerly, a set of standard screens was all that was required to measure the fineness to which an ore was ground. At present, the Haultain infrasizer is practically indispensable, and the nominal micron has become a familiar unit of measurement to all those dealing with the problems of fine grinding.

"IntroductionScreens are used in coal preparation plants for four basic functions, namely:I. Scalping off large size run-of-mine coal for initial size reduction;2. Sizing of coal treatment in different process streams;3. Removal of magnetite (dense medium) from clean coal and refuse;4. Dewatering.Canadian coal preparation plants use screens extensively in the above functions. Even plants where no beneficiation takes place, screening and crushing are carried out in the size reduction process.Description of Process UnitsThe type of screen used in coal preparation plants generally falls into the following categories:Fixed Screens and Grizzlies (for large coal)Often a simple rugged construction, either set horizontally above a bin or inclined with the coal flow.Fixed Sieves (for fine coal)They are used for dewatering and/ or size separation of slurried coal or discard. The sieve bend, the Vor-Siv, the Wilmot riffle and the cross flow screen fall into this category. The most commonly used in coal preparation plants is the sieve bend, Figure 1. Coal slurry is fed tangentially onto a fixed curve wedge wire screen deck. The solids are separated at a predetermined particle size, delivering a partially dewatered overproduct and a dilute underflow. The coal slurry is initially delivered to the sieve bend via a feed box. A series of baffles spreads the feed evenly across the width of the deck. The slurry drops from the last baffle, passes through the feed spout and is fed tangentially to the screen. It is important that the feed should contact the surface immediately at the front end of the sieve bend. It is possible to lose as much as 250Jo of screening area with a poorly fitted screen box.The full stream of coal slurry flowing over the sieve bend decreases in depth, in increments of approximately •;4 the slot width each time it passes a slot. Sieve bends make a size separation at 112 to 2h the slot width. This feature virtually eliminates blinding of the screen surface. Slot sizes are normally quoted in millimetres, available standard slot sizes are from 2 mm to 0.125 mm. The sieve bend is also widely used in coal preparation for preliminary dewatering."

The Island of Ceylon, which is one of the most beautiful possessions of the British Empire, has been an abode of man from the very earliest times. The Veddhas, a wild tribe of some 4500 people still living in the fastnesses of the jungle in east central portion of the island, are believed to represent a remnant of the oldest inhabitants of which we have any actual knowledge, but in the caves in which they live there are found the stone axes and other implements of Palaeolithic people who represent the first race of men who inhabited our globe, and of whom they may be, for all that is known, the direct descendants. About the fifth century before Christ there came the Aryan invaders, apparently from the north of India, who drove the Veddhas into the remote fastnesses of the jungle and developed the remarkable Singhalese civilization whose high character is demonstrated by the remarkable and very extensive system of irrigation works which they built up, and through which they made the island wonderfully productive. Great cities arose, some of which are believed to have had a population of over a million souls and whose temples and public buildings show that the people were accomplished architects and sculptors.

"The desirable shovel speed-torque curves are described, along with the characteristics of the more important electrical components used to approximate these curves. A particular shovel regulator system combining these components is discussed in detail and some of the advantages and disadvantages of the system are given.INTRODUCTIONIN 1959, STATIC CONTROL was for the first time successfully applied, installed and operated on a mining machine in North America. Since that time, a great deal has been learned about this control by the people maintaining these machines as well as by the de-signers.In 1961, the first SCR (Silicon Controlled Rectifier) or thyristor control system was installed on an excavator. This control differed from the earlier static control in that thyristor excitors supplied the generator fields directly. The development of thyristors of a sufficient rating to supply amounts of phase-controlled power to the generator fields eliminated the bulky Mag. Amp. -Rectifier combination previously used."

The town of Hedley is some 200 miles due east of Vancouver and lies in the bottom of the Similkameen River valley, at the junction of Twenty Mile creek, at about the 1,700-foot elevation above sea level. The Nickel Plate mine camp is on Nickel Plate mountain at an elevation of about 5,600 feet, four miles slightly east of north from Hedley, to which it is connected by 9 miles of road, and by 10,000 feet of tramway and electric railway. The latter is used both to transport the ore to the 275-ton mill at Hedley and to furnish the mine with supplies. History The Nickel Plate claim was staked in 1898 to cover the sole outcrop of the Nickel Plate system of orebodies. Soon afterwards it was optioned by the Marcus Daly interests of Butte and underground exploration commenced. Early exploration was successful, and a power plant, tramway, and mill were constructed. The mill began operations in 1904. Production under Daly control ensued from June, 1904, to August, 1909, and amounted to 167,000 tons. The Hedley Gold Mining Company was organized and commenced operations in 1909. The capacity of the mill was increased by stages to 200 tons and a steady production, except for short periods in winter, was maintained until 1930. By 1930, gold to the value of nearly $10,000,000 had been produced since the discovery in 1898. The South American Development Company optioned the property in 1932. Active exploration was conducted during 1933 and 1934 by the Kelowna Exploration Company, a subsidiary of the South American Development Company. This work was sufficiently successful that, coupled with the increase in the price of gold from $20.67 to $35.00 per ounce, production re-commenced in December, 1934, and continued uninterrupted until July, i946, when, along with all B.C. gold mines, a strike closed operations. Under the present ownership, the mill capacity was increased to 275 tons.

"The Functional Performance Equation calculated from a plant grinding survey defines two distinct ball mill circuit efficiencies and how they relate to total production rate through the target grind size. The survey data are also used to calculate a complete ball mill size distribution model, represented by the energy specific grinding rates, not just through the target grind size, but through all the size classes. Cyclone separation performance is represented by individual size recoveries to underflow. When these two unit operation performances are entered into the circuit modelling program (Streamline™), along with the circuit feed rate and size distribution, all the circuit survey size distributions and mass flows are perfectly regenerated by the program. The many issues associated with the historical Epstein (breakage-selection) models are eliminated. Once the circuit program is populated, pump and cyclone performance changes can be evaluated using a step-by-step procedure in order to maximize Classification System Efficiency. Mill water use and media sizing opportunities are also diagnosed in order to maximize Mill Grinding Efficiency at the size of interest. An example is provided. This circuit analysis and modelling system, and related training, is provided through a web-based application.IntroductionSince its development (McIvor, 1988), the Functional Performance Equation for ball milling has facilitated new understanding of industrial circuit cause and effect relationships, leading to significant strides in operational performance. Success stories of this refreshing approach to plant circuit performance improvement are now too numerous to list. Finch and McIvor (circa 1986) also discovered that the Functional Performance “Mill Grinding Rate” at the size of interest was the same cumulative grinding rate that is calculated from mill feed and discharge size distributions using a first-order rate equation. By calculating these cumulative grinding rates for all screen sizes, a complete ball mill model is generated (as used by Finch and Ramirez, 1981). Others in industry, Hinde and Kalala (2009), for example, have noted the same. Lacking the complexity needed to maintain their interest, most researchers have ignored this model, broadly opting instead for Epstein’s (1948) characterization of grinding as a chemical reaction, combining “selection rate” and “breakage size distribution” functions. The much simpler ball mill model presented here has previously been incorporated into a proprietary circuit modeling program (McIvor, 2005) and used for plant improvement work (for example, see McIvor and Finch, 2007, and McIvor, 2014). Now, by combining this extremely business-friendly ball mill model with optimization criteria from Functional Performance Analysis, a circuit modeling system (including the needed supplementary steps to assure successful plant implementation of circuit design changes) is at the disposal of every plant metallurgist, grinding equipment/material provider, and circuit designer."

As it’s a kind of strong magnetic mineral, we must adopt the weak magnetic separation equipment in magnetic separation process to realize removing Si and lowering impurities. While it cannot do very well to use the common weak magnetic separation equipment in the final cleaning to remove Si and lower impurities. At present, the plants, adopting single magnetic separation process to realize cleaning and removing Si and lowering impurities, are in the minority. Most magnetite plants adopt the flotation separation process to remove Si, lower impurities and purify the concentrate. Though with stable indexes and high Fe recovery rate, the flotation process is very complicated, high-cost and with lots of environmental pollution. If adopting the weak magnetic separation equipment can realize removing Si, lowering impurities and the final cleaning, the magnetic separation process should be the primary choice."

"The concept of large single line grinding circuits provides a valid answer in project feasibility studies by reducing capital investment requirements compared to parallel lines for the same plant throughput rates. The benefits of this concept are reflected as well on the operational aspects, in terms of higher and greater process stability, and reduced operational costs mainly due to the associated lower maintenance expenditures. However, concerns exist in the minerals industry on whether large single line grinding could reduce the overall concentrator plant availability. The mechanical design and integrity, the mill and gearless mill drive integration, as well as assets management aspects of this type of equipment are the key to guarantee successful availability records. Together with an overview of the added value provided by large single line grinding circuits, this paper focuses on risk mitigation strategies during mill and gearless mill drive integration, as well as on the design of the equipment itself, for the key aspects which could put at risk the operations availability.INTRODUCTIONDespite a large long term demand for commodities, the mining industry has never faced complex challenges as it is doing today. Decreasing high-quality and accessible deposits, declining ore grades in existing mines, shortages of electrical energy (e.g. in Chile) and an aging workforce are the most significant among the megatrends affecting our industry. In addition to this, flat underlying commodity prices and high price volatility are currently posing strong requirements to miners when entering into the process of approving investments.Nowadays to get projects financially approved (optimizations, expansions, new plants), capital expenditure has to be reduced, as observed up to 30% compared to the last decade, and at the same time the plant design has to be such to demonstrate that operating costs will also be significantly lower than in the past.When it comes to the concentrator plant, the concept of large single line grinding circuits provides a valid answer in project feasibility studies by significantly reducing the capital investment requirements compared to parallel lines for the same plant throughput rates. "AbstractCurrently installed an analogue instrumentation devices at Sherritt 's Ruttan Concentrator control. and/ or measure mill tonnages, grind, pH, density , some reagent and slurry flows, and cell levels. On-stream analysis is used to assay the main process streams. The history of development of process control is reviewed from startup to the present stage of selection of a process control computer. A pragmatic approach has been taken to process control to ensure compatibility with the needs and resources of Ruttan. Emphasis is made of the need to have the mill performing well from a mechanical and instrumentation point of view and to have opera tor acceptance of the computer through training. Plans for the computer phase to achieve these objectives are outlined.IntroductionTHE COPPER-ZINC OREBODY at Ruttan Lake was discovered by Sherritt exploration personnel in 1969 and by mid-1973 a 10,000-tpd mine and concentrator were in operation. After a typical startup period , the major mechanical problems in the crusher and concentrator have been resolved. Metallurgical performance is now up to standards forecast in the feasibility study.The cost of the original instrumentation installations, including an on- stream analyzer, was about one million dollars or 4% of the cost of the milling complex. Although there was no intention of using a process control computer until the plant was operating smoothly, it was understood that all instrumentation was compatible with .a computer, but this did not prove to be correct. This paper cover s the development of the instrumentation loops to date and the control strategies that will eventually be implemented through a process control computer."

Our program has been dictated by the necessity of broadening our markets through converting potash chemicals to fertilizers more in demand than potassium chloride. To this end, we have undertaken studies on methods of preparing potassium sulphate or potassium magnesium sulphate by rather simple conversion. When mixtures of sodium and magnesium sulphates are reacted with potassium chloride, the ratio of sodium to magnesium is quite pertinent. A range of ratios has been selected and the conversions of potassium chloride to sulphate have been assessed by cyclic operations. Results from experimental procedures for producing potassium nitrate are also avail-able. The influence on recovery for systems including organic solvents is assessed for a variety of situations.

"NINETEEN sixty-six is a year of unusual significance in our Institute and in our country. It marks two-thirds of a century of service by the Institute to the people of the mineral industry and two-thirds of the century that Sir Wilfred Laurier said ""belongs to Canada."" As we meet here today within the historic walls of Canada's oldest city, a city that looks back on three hundred and fifty years of progress, I am reminded that it is almost a third of a century ago -in April, 1934 -that here in Quebec I first attended an Annual General Meeting of the Institute. It occurred to me that it might be appropriate to examine briefly the change that the middle third of this century has brought in the affairs of the mineral industry and, with some trepidation, to consider the prospect for the third that lies ahead.Opinions differ as to the relative importance of factors that have been responsible for the expansion and growth of Canada in its first hundred years. Some will say that it has been due to the abundance and fertility of agricultural land, others to the early enterprise of the railroads, and financiers believe that the banking system has been a major factor; -the fisherman -the forester -the teacher -each has his own view. I suspect, however, that most of us here would subscribe to the thesis of T. A. Rickard -miner, author, imperialist -who wrote, a gene-ration ago, ""Trade follows the flag, but the flag follows the pick,"" and thus agree that the finest contribution to progress, to wealth, to extension of frontiers and to inter-national trade has been provided by the mineral industry."

The eastern and southeastern regions of Ohio are part of Appalachian coal country, with a documented 1,300 miles of streams impacted by acid mine drainage. Since 1995, partnerships of local watershed groups, government agencies, private industries and universities have focused on the remediation of the affected waterways. The partnerships have spent $2.4 million annually in constructing and operating treatment systems such as wetlands, anoxic limestone drains, successive alkalinity production systems, steel slag leach beds, and lime dosers. These systems have been partially successful, and water quality has improved in the region, but no treatment has yet met the ultimate objectives of low cost, continual remediation. Our research group has investigated an alternative system for acid mine drainage treatment: electrolysis combined with pH adjustment to selectively precipitate recoverable, saleable metal products to offset the cost of treatment. We utilized a $0.2 million pilot facility constructed by the Wayne National Forest, in Nelsonville, Ohio, to process approximately 40 L/min of mine drainage from surrounding seeps. The pilot facility has multipurpose tanks that can be adapted to process acid mine drainage with different characteristics, such as high or low aluminum content or high or low carbonate concentrations. Sodium hydroxide was used for pH adjustment. Results indicate that saleable product can be generated with this treatment technology. In an initial, not optimized trial, one seep yielded 4.7 kg of dried 69 % iron oxide product from 10 hours of pilot facility operation, treating 23,000 L with electricity costs of $4.68. Dissolved iron concentrations in the water were reduced from 242 ± 18 mg/L to 2.8 ± 2.0 mg/L (99.0 % removal) while the initial acidity of 443 mg/L as CaCO3 was neutralized to an alkalinity of 160 mg/L as CaCO3. Iron oxide can be sold as pigment for an average of $1.47 per kg in the United States. Currently, approximately 80 % of all pigment used in the United States is imported, and there is incentive to purchase domestically recovered pigment. If the iron oxide from the pilot facility could be sold as pigment for $1.47 per kg, 43 % of the operating cost (raw materials, electricity and construction costs) of treatment could be offset by the sale of the product. Considering the cost offset, the electrolysis process shows potential as a sustainable low cost alternative for treating acid mine drainage.

"Les réultats obtenus dans les sols sur quatorze aires d'essai et six cheminements régionaux dans I'A bitibi-Témiscamingue indiquent clairement qu'il existe des variations régionales importantes dans les teneurs en éléments traces de l'horizon A1 formé sur l’épais recouvrement glacio-lacustre de cette région. Les anomalies obtenues correspondent à celles qui ont été décelées lors de précédents levés des eaux souterraines et du till de base.Selon les critères d'évaluation utilisés, treize des quatorze aires d'essai ressortent comme anomales dans Ie contexte abitibien; dix de celles-ci sont tres anomales. Ceci suggère fortement qu'un levé régional de sols, fondé sur une approche multi-éléments, identifierait entre 70 et 90 % des cibles géochimiques reconnues par des échantillonnages en profondeur. Les résultats d'un échantillonnage systématique effectué sur une région de 1000km2 viennent aussi appuyer cette hypothèse. Conséquemment, les sols formes sur les sédiments glacio-lacustres sont un médium très utile pour inventorier de grandes regions recouvertes par ce typ e de sédiments.L 'horizon A1 est Ie plus utile pour ce type de levé parce qu'i1 est facil e d échantillonner, qu 'it assure une plus grande constance du typ e de matériel échantillonne et qu'il contient des teneurs accrues.De multiples mécanismes de dispersion géochimique ont joué des rôles d 'importance variable pendant et après la mise en place des sédiments glacio-Iacustres. Les plus importants sont la pression hydrostatique, la diffusion chimique et électrochimique ainsi que la bio-accumulation. Si on veut progresser dans la connaissance de ce milieu complexe, on devra adopter une approche plus systemique tenant compte de I'interaction des mécanismes agissant dans l'environnement global avant, durant et apres Ie depôt du mort-terrain."

The objective s of this paper are: (a ) to examine and discuss the burdens we place on our extractive industry; (b) to compare the levels of taxation in Canada with those in other countries; and ( c) to suggest certain broad parameters within which our taxation policies may be made more rational and stable. Among the burdens identified are taxation, the ownership and use of our resources, environmental issues and the rather emotional issue of so-called 'super profits'. Finally, the paper will address certain broad but key areas of policy which need attention and agreement if our tax system is to be made more rational. Such areas include: whether and if so why the extractive industry should be given incentives;. what circumstances, if any, justify a 'higher' than normal' level of taxation, and, ?if the concept of economic rents is a justifiable one, how might a basis for them be established which recognizes the fluctuating value of much of the industry's output. Note: The paper was written before the 1977 Federal and Provincial budgets were presented. Consequently, the paper does not reflect any changes proposed in these budgets.

Introduction During the past six seasons the writer has been engaged in semi-detailed investigations on the coal areas lying along the front of the Rocky mountains between the Brazeau river and the Smoky River Coal Reserve (see Map, Figure 1). The purpose of this paper is to present some observations pertaining to the stratigraphy and structure of the district, touching especially upon the lithological units into which the Lower Cretaceous sediments have been divided, the thicknesses of the formations at different localities, the number, thicknesses and horizons of the principal coal seams, and the structural conditions which exist in the various fields.

Pegmatite dykes containing lithium minerals and beryl occur dose to the borders of intrusive masses of granitic rock in the Winnipeg River area of Manitoba. Both vertical and flat-lying dykes are present. Most of the pegmatites consist of zones, containing characteristic mineral assemblages, arranged more or Jess parallel to the borders of the dykes. Five important lithium minerals are present; each occurs in a separate zone, but all the lithium-bearing zones are situated toward the centres of the pegmatites. Spodumene is the most abundant and widespread of the lithium minerals and occurs as small crystals intimately intergrown with quartz. Beryl is not an important constituent of the lithium pegmatites, but when .present, occurs outside the lithium zones, toward the margins of the -dykes. Beryl is most common in dykes containing few or no lithium minerals. The mineral assemblage in the beryl zone of the lithium dykes is the same as that of the beryl dykes. The attitude and internal structure, particularly zoning, of the pegmatite dykes, and the texture and assemblages of the constituent minerals, have an important bearing on exploration, development, and mining of these pegmatites, and on the extraction of various mineral products from them.

"This paper is the sequel to that on Developments in Sintering Efficiency delivered by Davies and Mitchell at the International Ore Dressing Congress, Stockholm, 1957. Attention is drawn to the fundamental concept of sintering as a heat transfer process, in which the ignition heat is continually transferred onward through the bed as a heat wave. By its passage, this heat initiates endothermic 'changes, such as carbonate decomposition, whose energy requirements are supplied by the combustion of the fuel contained in the bed.Ideally, the heat wave should be generated by the ignition hood followed by the pre-heating of the incoming air. The fuel content of the bed should be no more than the theoretical quantity needed to balance the endothermic changes. In practice, the heat wave is seriously short of energy and this is offset by excess fuel in the bed. As a result, sinter quality suffers, more return .fines are produced, and fuel is wasted, a loss of efficiency which could be avoided if the fundamentals of correct ignition were more widely appreciated.Sintering speed, otherwise heat wave velocity, is a function of the rate at which the incoming air acquires .heat from the cooling sinter and imparts it to the unburned feed below the combustion zone. It is thus a function of rate of air flow and so depends on bed permeability>. Ways of• improving and maintaining permeability at the maximum consistent with thorough sintering are discussed, particular reference being made to taconite concentrates. The possibilities of recrystallizing refractory ores into forms more amenable to physical concentration techniques by sintering are visualised, very little expenditure on heat energy being required when the process is operated near the ideal conditions."

This paper outlines the function of the Safety and Compensation Division of the Mining Association of British Columbia. After a general discussion of safety and the safety program now being followed in B.C., the author goes on to describe the wide-ranging aspects of compensation payments and company assessment rates. Special attention is also given to the problem of silicosis in mining operations. In appendices to the paper, the experience rating plan of the mining industry is compared to that recently adopted for the construction industry. Introduction The Mining Association of British Columbia consists of fifty-five member companies, including virtually all the producing mines as well as the larger exploration, contracting and development companies. On completion of an extensive study of safety and compensation in the mining industry, the Mining Association of British Columbia instituted a Safety and Compensation Division in 1954. The director of the Safety and Compensation Division reports to the Executive Committee of the Association. There are two main functions of this Division. Strike length varies from 400 to 600 feet and widths from 10 to 60 feet; dip is 75 degrees. Low grade and metal prices demanded low-cost mining, and the mine was developed for conventional sublevel stoping. As the ore lay entirely under a large lake, ground movement had to be avoided and the stopes were to be filled hydraulically. Late in 1973, vertical crater retreat mining was introduced at Inco Limited, Sudbury, to recover pillars between filled stopes. It proved satisfactory and the results were publicized by CIL, who developed the technique. The method seemed to offer some advantages and one stope at Centennial Mine was selected to be mined by VCR while production was maintained from blasthole stopes. The trial stope was safe and showed lower development costs, reduced drilling time, a favourable powder factor and good fragmentation. VCR mining is now an accepted method at HBM&S Co., Ltd., and its use is being extended.
