This Bureau of Mines report discusses the electric-arc reduction of zirconium and hafnium oxides with carbon yielding a metal-metallic carbide mixture. The carbon to oxide ratio in the feed determines the metal to carbide ratio in the product. A sample of this product was produced -or testing as a feed for the deBoer iodide-dissociation process. A new technique for producing pure carbides is described, which uses the intense heat of the arc to volatilize the carbide. The activities of the Bureau of Mines include the development and testing of self-contained oxygen breathing apparatus and other devices for respiratory protection, the development and tasting of devices for detecting dangerous or noxious mine atmospheres, and the training of men in the mineral industries in the use and care of this equipment to enable them to render effective service in mine rescue and recovery operations following mine fires and explosions, or under other conditions where irrespirable gases may be found in mines or mining plants. The first use of self-contained oxygen breathing apparatus for com- bating mine fires and explosions in the United States dates back about 30 years. Previous to that time, exploration for any distance ahead of fresh air was virtually impossible without great risk to life; moreover, the men called upon to render service at mine disasters were not well-versed in the properties and physiological effects of gases likely to be encountered. It was also impossible to work ahead of fresh air to restore ventilation, and if many stoppings were blown out by an explosion, air had to be introduced into whole areas or sections at once without knowledge of the conditions ahead; moving an explosive mixture of methane and air over live fire had to

The Bureau of Mines devised a procedure for selectively extracting platinum-group metals (PGM) and gold from Stillwater Complex flotation concentrate. The Stillwater Complex is the only major U.S. PGM resource. Development of a suitable extraction technique will contribute to its exploitation. The concentrate was roasted at 1,050° C to convert host base-metal sulfides to oxides and the PGM from sulfide minerals to their elemental states. The roasted concentrate was preleached with dilute sulfuric acid to remove easily soluble gangue minerals. After pre-leaching, the concentrate was slurried with 6M HCI and leached at ambient temperature and pressure with a strong-oxidizing agent. Hydrogen peroxide, chlorine, sodium hypochlorite, nitric acid, and a persulfate salt were the oxidants investigated. The two-stage leaching scheme ex-tracted up to 97 pct of the platinum, 92 pct of the palladium, and 99 pct of the gold from the roasted concentrate. The base metals were not solubilized and reported to the residue. No attempt was made to devise a procedure to recover the copper and nickel because they comprise less than 5 pct of the value of the concentrate. Viable techniques for recovering the precious metals from the pregnant solution were sulfide precipitation, cementation with nickel, or adsorption on activated carbon.

THE carbonizing properties of one medium- and and five low-volatile coals from West Virginia and one high-volatile A and two medium-volatile coals from Pennsylvania were determined by 800° and 900° C. BM-AGA carbonization tests and expansion tests in the sole-heated oven. Plastic properties of the coals and the yields and quality of their cokes and other carbonization products were determined. The low-volatile coals comprised a mine and a coke-plant sample of Pocahontas No. 6-bed coal from the. Black Eagle No. 1 mine, Wyoming County, W. Va.; a mine sample of Pocahontas No. 6 bed from the Louisville mine, Mercer County, W. Va. ; Davy Sewell bed was sampled at the Twin Branch mine, McDowell County, W. Va.; and Fire Creek bed was sampled at the Dunedin No. 1 mine, Raleigh County, W. Va. The medium-volatile coals were from the Fire Creek bed, Laurel Creek mine, Greenbrier County, W. Va.; Lower Kittanning bed, Springfield No. 4 mine, Cambria County, Pa.; and Upper Kittanning bed, Springfield No. 6 mine, Clearfield County, Pa. The high-volatile A coal represented the Upper and Lower Freeport beds, Kent Nos. 1 and 2 mines, Indiana County, Pa. In addition to the coals listed, high-volatile A coal from the Pittsburgh bed, Warden mine, Allegheny County, Pa., a standard blending coal, was used in blends in this investigation.

[Recent investigations at the Intermountain Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines at Salt Lake City indicate that metallurgists have given little attention to the occurrence of jarosite minerals in the oxidized ores of lead and silver. These investigations have also emphasized the importance of lowing when these minerals occur in the oxidized ores, especially those containing lead, silver, and gold, as their presence is a material factor in selecting a suitable kind of treatment. Since the question of the occurrence of jarosites in oxidized ores has come to the attention of the Bureau of Mines, investigation has indicated that plumbojarosite and argentojarosite are quite common. These two minerals appear to be widely distributed and probably escaped recognition by persons who had attempted to treat certain oxidized lead ores in which the jarosite minerals represented a material portion of the metal content. Consideration of the physical characteristics of the jarosites also indicates that in many cases failure to treat some of the oxidized lead ores with success has been directly due to the fact that the greater portion of their lead and silver content was present as plumbojarosite and argentojarosite. The data and the description of these minerals given in the body of this paper indicate that attempts to recover lead and silver from ores in which appreciable amounts of too metals occur is plumbojarosite and. argentojarosite would be unsuccessful if confined to gravity methods of concentration. There are undoubtedly considerable tonnage of oxidize lead ores in the various mining regions of this and other countries, and it is quite probable tat in some of these ores the metal content of lead and silver may be largely anglesite (lead sulphate) and cerussite (lead carbonate) but that they will also contain cerargyrite (silver chloride), argentojarosite, and plumbojarosite. The Act of Congress authorizing the establishment of the United States Bureau of Mines became effective July 1, 1910. One of the most important duties Congress delegated to the Bureau in this Act was the study of health and safety conditions in the mineral industries. Early investigations of these conditions revealed the need of prompt Care of injured employees, as, under the difficulties inherent in their occupation, seemingly unimportant wounds if not treated promptly might become infected and cause permanent disability or even death. Many seriously injured persons brought out of mines and plants by fellow workers ignorant of approved methods of giving first aid or of safe means of transportation have been caused suffering and have had injuries accentuated to such a degree as to bring about permanent disability or death. The need of general instruction in first aid thus became apparent. BRIEF HISTORY OF FIRST-AID WORK The education of miners in the United States in first aid probably was conducted systematically first by the anthracite industry in Pennsylvania. Subsequently, first-aid training was carried on actively in Alabama and Indiana. Meanwhile, a general training campaign was carried on among industrial workers by the American Red Cross Society; when the Bureau of Mines began its nation-wide campaign of instructing employees of the mineral industries, the Red Cross turned over that part of its industrial training work to the Bureau but continued to cooperate by furnishing surgeons as judges in important first-aid contests and demonstr tions and assisted for a number of years in determining training methods.

"The captive bubble and sessile drop contact angle techniques have been used to evaluate the hydrophobicity of petrographically identified coal macerals. The magnitude of the contact angle on vitrinite is shown to be a function of coal rank ( %C, %0 and % vitrinite reflectance), increasing with increasing rank to a maximum for low volatile bituminous rank coals then decreasing for anthracite. The least data scatter is found when vitrinite reflectance is used as a rank parameter. Contact angles measured or estimated for other discrete macerals, indicate a variation in hydrophobicity based on coal type. These data correlate well with known flotation results. Coal is a heterogeneous mixture of plant remains and associated minerals that have undergone chemical and physical changes by biological and geological processes. These plant remains form coal macerals, discrete organic entities in the coal which have characteristic chemical and physical properties. As the differing chemical nature of each maceral will affect its behaviour in processes such as carbonization the separation of macerals during coal preparation may provide an important asset in coal utilization.Separation of some of the macerals based on specific gravity has been achieved in the laboratory, and by Sun and Cohen , in a study of two Pennsylvania bituminous coal preparation plants. It was indicated that the lighter exinites report almost exclusively to the clean coal while the denser inertinites are concentrated in the higher gravity fractions. The Longwy-Burstlein process6 took advantage of the difference in hardness or friability of the macerals by using impact breakage followed by screening to remove the more friable vitrain,clarain and fusain. The remaining durain, often high in spore content, was then recrushed. The re-mixed fractions produced the optimum size for obtaining the best coke strength for a particular coal.Separation or concentration of rnacerals by froth flotation largely depends on differences in the hydrophobicity of the macerals. Sun and Cohen 5 . indicated an order of decreasing floatability as exinite, vitrinite and inertinite, while a Russian study (as cited by Brown 7 ) showed that vitrains floated more readily than the duller types. More recently, Hirt and Aplan8 showed that 'pseudovitrinite' floats somewhat faster than does vitrinite while fusinite floats very slowly. Olson and A plan found that vitrinite floated easily while substantial quantities of the non-floated coal contained fusinitic material. Burdon noted that vitrinite is more floatable than semifusinite, and Sarker et a/. 11 have shown that vitrinite is selectively concentrated by froth flotation and oil agglomeration. Sun indicated that flotation, based on his calculated floatability index, should decrease in the order clarain, vitrain, fusain and durain; while Horsley and Smith 13 indicated the decrease to be: vitrain, clarain, durain and fusain. These differences can be attributed to the specific coals used in each study and to the individual macerals composing each coal type within a given coal."

"INTRODUCTION In a previous publication4 results were given of numerous experiments made on the in-flammability of gas mixtures consisting of methane, hydro a. carbon monoxide, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide. Data were obtained and tables prepared giving the inflammable limits of each of these combustibles when mixed with various proportions of carbon dioxide and nitrogen. By the use of these data and the application of Le Chatelier's law, it was found possible to calculate the limits of inflammability of any gas mixture containing any or all of the above gases.Various mixtures of the five gases given above were prepared and their limits determined experimentally and then calculated. Good agreement was found between the determined and calculated results when complex gases encountered in mine safety work were tested. Of special significance was the accurate calculation of the limits of inflammability of gases from mine fires, gases from mine explosions, detonation products of explosives, blast—furnace gases, automobile exhaust gas, and other gases of a similar character.Using the method given in the above report, Yeaw5 investigated a number of industrial gases including oven, coal, producer, blue, carbureted blue, and dry quencher gases, and found the determined and calculated results to agree remarkably well, thus giving further proof of the value of such a means of determining dangerous conditions when combustible gases are encountered in practice.GASES FROM A POTASH MINEGases were recently encountered in a potash nine in New Mexico, containing the com-bustibles, methane, hydrogen, and ethane. In one special case a mild explosion occurred when these gases were mixed with the right proportions of air and ignited it therefore became necessary to know the inflammability of these mixtures in order that the proper precautions could be taken to prevent explosions."

For several years, or from about 1932 to 1935, inclusive, the coal industry of the United States had an excellent record as to coal-mine explosions. In 1937 and in 1938 to date there has been a definite increase in the number of explosions attended by considerable loss of life and property damage. In most of these explosions one important underlying and contributing cause has been lack of sufficient (or at least efficient) ventilation to properly dilute and remove explosive gas from the mine. This increase in explosions indicates that. the lesson taught through bitter experience, many times in the not far-distant past, of the need for good ventilation is frequently being overlooked, partly because the relatively good experience of the industry in the past several years has made many mining people forgetful. Moreover mining practices are rapidly changing, and in some instances the changes are being made with little if any regard for safety. It appears, therefore, that a review of some ventilation principles and practices should be of value in preventing further disasters; this paper has been prepared with that object in mind. In coal mining the need for thorough ventilation of all underground working places is recognized by both mining practice and law; such ventilation is generally obtained by the use of fans that circulate a quantity of air much in excess of the quantity of coal produced, by weight as well as by volume. For example, in a relatively small mine producing 1,000 tons of coal per day and circulating 100,000 cubic feet of air, which is by no means abnormal, 2,000,000 pounds of coal and approximately 10,900,000 pounds of air would be moved out of the mine every 24 hours. Because of the need for adequate dilution and removal of methane issuing or likely to issue from mine strata and for removal of the carbon dioxide formed by coal and timber oxidation up-to-date coal mines usually provide an air volume which if adequately coursed not only removes these gases but also the gaseous products of the detonation of explosives (which may include carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulphide, nitrogen oxides, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen) and the carbon

The U.S. Bureau of Mines formed a team in 1991 to begin developing a long-range research plan for computer-assisted mining that would benefit the metal-nonmetal mining industry. This report details the team's accomplishments, specifically, the development of a model that identifies metal-nonmetal mining research needs that could be addressed by the application of automation technology. The report also provides a summary of automation needs and applications based on visits with mining company representatives. The status and future direction of this work is also presented.

The mechanical properties of low-hafnium, arc-melted, Kroll-process zirconium are presented. The effect of temperature on the ultimate strength, yield strength, proportional limit, elongation, hardness, Young's modulus, electrical resistivity, and impact strength are shown, The effects of cold work and annealing on the tensile properties, bend radius, and formability, as determined by cupping tests, are also given, Tensile properties are compared, in part, to those obtained on earlier graphite-melted zirconium and on crystal-bar zirconium. INTRODUCTION The commercial production of high-purity, low-hafnium bearing zirconium has been achieved, and this metal is becoming available for industrial use. However, there is little published information regarding the physical and mechanical properties of this product; and, since there have been many improvements in the production and arc-melting techniques of zirconium in the past 3 years, it was considered advisable to present the properties of the vastly improved zirconium representative of current production.

Mining began in Pend Oreille and Stevens Counties about 1885, Lead and zinc have been the principal products, and the area has supplied nearly all the output of these metals in the State. Fend Oreille County's output of lead and zinc from 1902 to 1956 was 110,700 and 229,600 tons, respectively. The Stevens County total was 54,100 tons of lead and 87,600 tons of zinc. Copper ore was produced mainly from the United Copper mine, Chewelah district, from 1912 to 1920; the principal gold mine was the First Thought, Orient district, which was active from 1904 to 1942. Approximately 225 mines and prospects produced; most of the ventures were on a small scale. The total value of gold, silver, copper, lead, and zinc produced from 1902 to 1956 was $75.2 million in Pend Oreille County and $39.4 million in Stevens County. INTRODUCTION In compiling the figures for this report, use was made of Bureau of Mines permanent records of nine production, the annual tabulations of producing mines, and the Minerals Yearbook. Requests to publish individual data, obtained from the annual production canvass, were made to the latest recorded operators of all mines in the area. Response to this request was good; therefore, it was possible to make the tables nearly complete. In a few instances the producer requested that the production data remain confidential, and in others it was not possible to reach the mine operator at his last known address. The district and county tables combine statistics for all mines, including those mines whose output could not be published separately.

Fire is still a scourge of the mining industry, although many precautionary measures have been and are being taken to reduce the incidence of fires and to combat them. Generally, the success of fire extinguishment is directly proportional to the speed of attack, and the speed of attack in turn is dependent upon the availability of materials and trained personnel. Preparations for firefighting are frequently neglected because they are considered emergency needs and do not contribute directly to coal production. Fire incites panic--a fact often overlooked--but such chaos can be minimized by training people in the use of equipment and procedures. Heat, smoke, and fumes hamper the approach to a fire; however, a relatively new technique of attacking fires with high-expansion foam may well contribute greatly to firefighting. The foam is transported to a fire and used at a considerable distance, thus permitting the firefighters to work more safely.

As part of a continuing project to develop refractory metal alloys for high-temperature structural applications, the Bureau of Mines applied solid solution and precipitation strengthening techniques to improve the properties of columbium alloys. The purpose was to investigate the effects of hafnium, tungsten, and boron on the formability, strength, and oxidation resistance of columbium. The experiment was of factorial design with two replications which called for 72 ingots of 36 basic compositions, weighing 150 grams each. Hafnium, tungsten, and boron were evaluated at 3, 3, and 4 levels, respectively. Values of alloy content are all in atomic percent. The highest strength observed was 29,000 psi at 1,200° C for alloys Cb-15Hf (No. 3), Cb-7.5Hf-5W-2B (No. 14), and Cb-15Hf-5W-2B (No. 15). At 1,200° C, the ternary alloy Cb-15Hf-5W (No. 6) which has shown good properties in previous Bureau of Mines investigations was the most resistant to oxidation For boron additions, the alloys oxidized more readily with increasing amounts of this element. The fabricability of the alloys high in boron became increasingly difficult, resulting in an inadequate number of alloys required for a complete statistical analysis for all the tests. As a result of the decrease in ductility, an insufficient quantity of tensile samples were available for a proper analysis for the high-temperature strength data.

The electrochemical reduction of AlC13 was investigated as a process for the production of aluminum. An externally heated, single-compartment cell with a rammed refractory lining was used with molten KCl-NaCl-AlC13 electrolyte. Aluminum was deposited qt 700° to 760° C with a current of 100 to 200 amperes on a molten aluminum cathode. Chlorine was evolved at a graphite anode and collected and measured to provide a quantitative evaluation of the AlC13 reduction. Aluminum was removed from the cell by siphoning or ladling. Granular AlC13 was added periodically to replenish that depleted from the electrolyte. Concentrations of 7.5 to 17.5 percent AlC13 in the electrolyte were optimum for operation. Anode current efficiencies of 83 to 85 percent were attained, using anode current densities of 5.9 amperes per square inch and an anode-cathode distance of 4 inches. The chemically bonded, alumina liner was resistant to attack by aluminum and chlorine but susceptible to erosion at the surface of the electrolyte. Titanium diboride proved suitable for the electrical connection to the molten aluminum cathode. Aluminum of a purity equal to or better than 1100 series metal was electrowon continuously from commercial AlC13 for a period of 4-1/2 months.

During the past 2 years, U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) researchers reviewed an in situ stress investigation conducted in 1977 at a test site on the 4250 level of the Lucky Friday Mine, Mullan, ID. Although the field measurements of over core strain were found to be useful, significant deficiencies were found in the stress field estimation procedure. The stress field estimate was then updated to incorporate recent progress in statistical capabilities and new understanding of stress concentration factors for doorstopper cells, as well as to correct an error in the original stress solution procedure. Simple models were used to examine the possibility that systematic variations in material properties and stress fields existed at the site. These models succeeded in reducing the sum of squared error somewhat, but fell short of completely describing stress variations throughout the test site. This overcore measurement will be supplemented by two other measurements described in the second and third reports of this series. Other observations of stress field characteristics are discussed in the fourth report The final report will also characterize the natural in situ stress field in the vicinity of the Lucky Friday Mine. This work was undertaken to support USBM research on mining method design and rock-burst control for deep mines.

Early in 1912, from information received by the Bureau of Mines, it became evident that quantities of valuable radium-bearing ore from Colorado were being exported for manufacture in foreign coun- trics and that at least part of the manufactured product was being returned to this country and sold at a price entirely incommensurate with that received by the miner and the prospector. Consequently, in line with its efforts to increase efficiency in the mining and treat- ment of mineral resources, the Bureau of Mines undertook an inves- tigation of conditions. Results of this preliminary investigation were published, in the summer of 1913, as Bulletin 70, which gave an out- line of the radium deposits of the West, the conditions of mining, the wastes involved, and the status of the production of radium from its ores. At about this time newspapers and medical journals were publish- ing statements regarding the value of radium in cancer therapy. These reports, although many of them were exaggerated, brought out clearly the remarkable virtue of the gamma rays for the treat- ment of cancer and other malignant growths. In view of the fact that the largest known supplies of radium ore in the world are in the States of Colorado and Utah and on the public lands of the United States, it was deemed highly important for the Bureau of Mines to study the production of radium in detail. Such study, it was hoped, would enable the prospector and miner to obtain a fairer price for the ores and would furnish information necessary in case Congress appropriated funds to develop methods for extracting radium from ore on the public lands under Government supervision, to be supplied at cost to the hospitals of the Army, Navy, and Public Health Service.

Three of the test methods frequently used for the determination of moisture in the analysis sample of coal were employed in analyzing a series of coals ranging in rank from anthracite to lignite . For most coals , the variation between the three methods are within the tolerances allowed between duplicate determinations by the same method . The processing variables studied included atmosphere , flow rate of atmosphere , inert atmospheres , oven temperatures , heating time , exposure of the dried coal to laboratory air , and surface area of the test sample . Unless close control is kept on these variables , erratic results will be obtained .
