The degree and manner of packing of bulk materials influences all phases of their loading, such as by a front end loader or a dragline, and their mechanics of flow, such as through a binhopper or an ore pass. The most important quantity in analyzing the handling of a bulk material is its shear strength which depends primarily on the same parameters as those that determine the packing state. Some of these are size, size distribution, moisture content, particle shape, particle orientation, and cohesion. The variables that affect the packing state arc vibration, pressure, intensity of deposition, velocity of deposition, and, when the material is confined, container used. The analysis of packing by a number of investigators has been done almost entirely with spherical particles. Most of these studies have dealt with monosized spheres. There is scant information on particles with angular shapes. Since most of the investigations by far have been concerned with ceramics and powder metallurgy, the particle sizes and ranges of size distribution have been small compared to those generally found in mining after fragmentation.

The purpose of the study is to investigate the effects of fracture filling and associated alteration on the mechanical behavior of rocks. Results are presented for specimens from the Climax and Henderson mines in Colorado and the San Manuel mine in Arizona. The rock types studied from each location are from 1) Climax, medium-grained - granite, fine-grained granite, granite porphyry, schist, and gneiss; 2. Henderson, rhyolite porphyry; 3. San Manuel, quartz monzonite and quartz monzonite porphyry. A description of the rocks was made including: color, texture, mineral composition, composition and fabric of fracture fillings, density and porosity. Unconfined and triaxial compression tests were run on the Climax and San Manuel specimens. Sonic relocities were measured during the compression tests; Shore sceleroscope hardness was measured before the compression tests. Tentative conclusions are that some relation appears to exist between compressive strength and the following properties and features for all the specimens: dynamic Young's modulus, sonic velocity, density, rock composition, and composition and fabric of fracture fillings - veinlets. There appears to be some relation between compressive strength and Shore scleroscope hardness and porosity for quartz monzonite (San Manuel). A relation appears to exist between compressive strength and texture for schist and between com¬pressive strength and extent of failure on fracture fillings for fine-grained granite, schist, and gneiss (Climax). We plan to perform additional analyses of data collected so far and data yet to be collected in the next few months, with emphasis placed on devising a practical index of alter¬ation that can be used in the field. Limitations on interpretations arise from such factors as heterogeneity of the rocks studied, the small range of confining pressures used, and other factors presented in the text.

"The increase in tunneling operations that requires working under pressures greater than that of ordinary atmosphere has raised the question of the use and possible limitations of respiratory protective devices under such unusual conditions. As little, if any, information is available, there is need for a comprehensive study of this subject before specific recommendations can be made. In the absence of such data it seems desirable to make a few preliminary observations regarding the problems associated with wearing respiratory protective devices under increased air pressures.Two distinct problems must be considered--the mechanics of the apparatus used under such conditions and the physiological effects of increased pressures on wearers of respiratory apparatus. The Construction Aggregates Corp. operates a plant for processing sand and gravel from two deposits in Ottawa County, Mich. The bulk of the sand is obtained from a sand dune on the shore of Lake Michigan, and the gravel is dug from a glacial-drift deposit farther inland. Mining is done with draglines, and the material, both at the digging site and in the plant, is moved mainly by systems of conveyors. The Ferrysburg plant serves customers along the Great Lakes, which is unusual for a business normally local in character. Annual production exceeds 1-1/2 million tons of sand and gravel as concrete aggregate and 200,000 tons of core sand for foundry use.

Although metallurgical benefits of processing metals in a vacuum or reduced atmosphere have been realized for a hundred years, the problem of creating a vacuum in the range from 10-0 to 10-4 mm. of mercury in a moderately sized furnace chamber has been difficult to solve. The demand for these and lower pressures, with the advent of World War II, for separating the fission-able uranium isotope from its stable twin by the electromagnetic process, gave impetus to developing pumps capable of delivering extremely low pressures. With the release of data by the Atomic Energy Commission on methods of securing high vacuum in large equipment, steel companies took the initiative, and the growth of the vacuum-melting industry was assured. Vacuum-induction melting of steel in the United States began on a small scale in early 1945 and in 10 years grew to 60,000 pounds per month or 720,000 pounds per year. The years following 1954 showed tremendous expansion, culminating in 1958 in a capacity of more than 36 million pounds.

This bulletin traces the growth in the belief in the explosibility of coal dust, summarizes the experiments and mine investigations that have established this belief, and gives the present status of pre- ventive measures. It has been prepared in accordance with the pro- visions of the acts of Congress authorizing investigations relating to the causes of mine explosions, and contains references to and descrip- tions of experiments made at the Federal testing station at Pittsburg, Pa. This station was inaugurated under the United States Geo- logical Survey, and was transferred to the Bureau of Mines on the establishment of the latter on July 1, 1910. Only within comparatively few years has the dry dust of bitumi- nous and lignitic coals been generally recognized as an explosive agent more insidious, threatening, and deadly to the miner than fire damp. Fire damp carries its own flag of warning-the "cap" in the safety lamp-but coal dust, though visible, does not attract attention until present in large quantities. Fire damp is of local occurrence, and except in notable and very exceptional cases is controllable by careful manipulation of ventilating currents. If by mischance a body of fire damp is ignited in a mine, the force of the explosion may be terrific, but the effect is local unless dry coal dust is present, or unless (as it very rarely happens) an explosible mixture of methane gas and air extends through large areas of the mine. In a dry mine dust accu- mulates everywhere, and the blast from the ignition and combustion of bituminous dust may traverse miles of rooms and entries and wreck structures at the entrance to the mine. The comparative potential destructiveness of gas and of bituminous dust is strikingly shown by the history of the Pennsylvania anthracite mines. These mines not infrequently have large inflows of gas, and the resulting mixtures of gas and air have sometimes been ignited, yet no such wide-sweeping explosions have taken place, despite the presence of dry anthracite dust, as have happened in excellently ventilated bituminous mines.

"INTRODUCTION As part of a general investigation of the zinc-producing area of southwestern Wisconsin, the Bureau of Mines undertook a limited amount of exploratory drilling in the immediate vicinity of the New Dale Rundell mine, in the Mifflin District of Iowa County, Wisc.The work was carried out during the early part of 1945, at a time when all effort was being directed toward increasing production of metals important to the Nation's war program. Bureau of Mines engineers decided to conduct exploration at the New Dale Rundell mine after a preliminary study of available data showed a reasonable possibility of indicating an important deposit. Before the Bureau of Mines investigation, 50 holes had been drilled in the vicinity. Of this number, 18 encountered ore of minable grade. Subsequently the mine was developed and operated for a brief period; however, work was stopped before all of the ore disclosed by drilling had been mined. There appeared to be a correlation between the ore shown by the drilling in the New Dale Rundell mine and another disclosure some 1,500 feet to the northwest. The Bureau of Mines exploration was pinned to explore this possible correlation. Of the 7 holes drilled by the Bureau of Mines, 3 disclosed minable ore beyond the limits of previous drilling."

"Steel manufacturers have noticed a decided tendency on the part of many of their customers to become more exacting in their steel specifications. Under these conditions, the steel must not only meet the specifications of physical properties (tensile strength, reduction of area, elongation, impact strength, grain size, normality, etc.) and the chemical analyses, but must also pass the inspection test of ""cleanliness.""By cleanliness is commonly meant the absence of oxide and sulphide inclusions. Other foreign particles such as furnace or ladle slag, ladle and runner brick, etc., must also be absent. The determination of cleanliness at present is usually made by microscopic inspection or macroetching.The rejection of steel for lack of cleanliness is increasing, out cleanliness is one of the most difficult requirements for the manufacturer to fill. The reason for this is that every steel inspector has a different conception of a. clean steel. A material which does not pass the examination of one inspector way be regarded as entirely satisfactory by the metallurgist of an¬other company. The cause of this confusion and disagreement concerning the definition of a clean or a dirty steel is simply that as yet no standardized procedure for the determination of impurities has been proposed and generally accepted, since many variables are encountered which interfere with the development of a satisfactory method. An idea of the complexity of this situation will be obtained from the following pages.A Survey of Proposed Analytical MethodsAlthough no analytical method has been accepted, many procedures have been proposed, as may be seen in Table 1. Therein are listed 16 of the better-known processes, pith references to the work of their originators, their mechanisms of determination, and their applicabilities. Among these is included the electrolytic method developed by one of the present authors, and some comparison between this and previously proposed procedures may be obtained by a study of the table. It appears that this new method Las many advantages over the others, and this paper presents a critical Study of its value."

This Bureau of Mines study was made to obtain and present facts concerning the production and marketing of rare-earth metals and thorium in the Central and Southern Rocky Mountains (Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming, referred to in this report as the region) and to review the current demand for these elements in the United States. Little or no published information was available on the marketing practices for these commodities. As a result of many inquiries from industry, potential prospectors, and the general public, the various factors of resources, production (present and potential), marketing, and consumption have been investigated, and the results are set forth in this report. Material concerning occurrences and deposits is from published references detailed in the bibliography.

The United States Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the National Send and Gravel Association conducted a safety contest in 1929 Among producers of sand and gravel. Only 26 plants were enrolled, as the contest was late getting under way. It is hoped that a ranch larger number of plants will be represented in the safety competition of 1930. Two trophies, both of which were provided by Rock Products magazine, were awarded at the end of the contest; one trophy was given for the best safety record among plants working 100,000 or mare man-hours during the year and the other for the beat record among plants working less than 100,000 man-hours. The trophies were presented to representatives of the winning, companies on January 29, 1930, at the annual convention of the National Sand and Gravel Association at Memphis, Tenn.

This paper is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on the methods and costs of mining uranium on the Colorado Plateau. The Continental No. l mine is at the south end of the Big Indian mining district, San Juan County, Utah. The mine is on a school section owned by the State of Utah and leased by Continental Uranium, Inc. A 70,000-ton uranium-vanadium ore deposit was discovered as a result of an exploratory drilling program completed in 1954.

TiC14, AIC13, and VC14 were coreduced simultaneously via a Kroll-type magnesium reduction to form an alloy sponge as part of a research effort by the Bureau of Mines to produce titanium alloy powder. Reduction tem-peratures of 750°, 850°, and 950° C, a range of chloride feed rates from 34 to 152 Ib/(ft2·h), and crucible diameters of 7-3/4 and 10-1/4 in were tested. Microprobe analyses using a 40-um-diam spot showed no effect on alloy microhomogeneity (distribution of Al and V in the Ti, considered critical as a powder property), due to changes in process variables within these ranges. Statistical analysis of these data for alloy sponge indicated greater variation in the chemical composition (AI and V) than that found in commercial Ti-6Al-4V plate or Plasma Rotating Electrode Process (PREP) powder. Therefore, a one-step approach to pow-der, such as grinding the Ti alloy sponge, would not produce a powder product of acceptable chemical homogeneity. An approach that homoge-nized the sponge, such as with a melting step, would produce an accept-able powder product with respect to chemical homogeneity.

The fuel requirements for industrial and domestic consumers in New England, in normal times, are supplied almost entirely by fuel oil, anthracite, and bituminous coal. A shortage of these fuels occurred during the war. This shortage was caused by: (1) The diversion of oil to military uses; (2) the use of railroad and boat facilities that ordinarily would transport coal for the transportation of war material; (3) the inability of coal mines to apply the increased demand for coal which resulted from the conversion from oil to coal by domestic and industrial consumers; and (4) the increased demand of war industries for coal. Because of this Critical fuel situation, an investigation was made of possible sources of fuel nearer to points of consumption in New England.

Bureau of Mines contract entitled "Noise Abatement in Mining Machinery," Number H0122054. 2.1 Background Until the Congress of the United States created and passed Public Law 91-173, the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969, there were no directly-applicable standards for noise exposure for underground coal miners.1 Section 206 of this law, approved December 30, 1969, provided for standards of noise to be applicable to each coal mine. This study was a part of two programs: The first, to develop and evaluate high-temperature refractories; the second, to investigate reaction-rate kinetics and phase equilibria in the sinter step of the lime-soda process for the recovery of alumina. High-temperature X-ray diffractometer techniques are to be used extensively in both programs. This paper summarizes developments in the field of high-temperature X-ray diffractometers through 1959, evaluates various furnace designs, and describes briefly the X-ray diffraction facilities of the Federal Bureau of Mines. A more detailed description of the equipment and its calibration is planned in a future paper on thermal expansion and phase inversion of rare-earth oxides.

About 65 percent of the more than 400 million tons of coal produced annually in the United States is mechanically cleaned to remove the inorganic impurities before being sent to market. The impurities, principally shale and clay with some pyrite, average about 20 percent of the raw coal treated. Nearly 95 percent of the tonnage is treated by wet processes, in which water, suspensions of solids in water, or occasionally calcium chloride solutions are employed. Difference in density of coal and impurity is the basis of these processes. Of major importance in the separation is the competency of the impurities, that is, the resistance of the impurities to size disintegration in water. In general, the impurities are more resistant in geologically older coals or those in effect made older by metamorphism. If the impurities suffer reduction in particle size when immersed in water, the separation of organic from inorganic material becomes more difficult, Recently the Scientific Department of the National Goal Board (Great Britain) undertook fundamental research into the interaction of shale and water and also developed an empirical method of assessing shale breakdown or disintegration. 6

"The experimental flotation work described in this paper was undertaken to test the conclusions derived from a previous microscopic and chemical study of several samples of converter slag. That study3 resulted in the conclusion that approximately 90 per cent of the copper content of a converter slag wad in either the sulphide or metallic form, and that if the slag were cooled slowly the copper-bearing material would be in particles of such size that they would be freed from silicate and magnetite grains by grinding the slag to pass a 150-mesh sieve. If this were true, it should be possible to separate the copper-bearing grains from slowly cooled, converter slag by the flotation process.Many attempts, of which the author has seen no published account, have been made to treat slags, especially converter slags, by flotation. In every case these trials have been made with chilled slags, in which, as shown in the preceding report, the copper-bearing material is top finely disseminated, to be freed by any reasonable degree of grinding.The flotation tests described in this paper have shown that it is possible to recover by flotation about 30 per cent of the copper content of a converter slag containing 3 per cent copper and to obtain flotation concentrates which have a copper content of 35 per cent.Acknowledgment is made to G. Laboratory tests were conducted with a closed, recycling system to evaluate the effectiveness of solid-in-gas suspensions as heat transport mediums. Micronized graphite in helium or nitrogen was circulated by a centrifugal compressor to determine the feasibility of the method and heat transfer capabilities of the mediums. Suspensions were circulated without plugging or eroding the compressor or piping. At low flowrates and light (0.1 to 0.2 volume-percent) graphite loadings, slightly less power was required to transport a given amount of heat with suspensions than with helium alone. Graphite deposition on the heat exchange surfaces of the cooler decreased the heat transfer effectiveness at higher solids concentration. Efforts to eliminate deposition are described.

"IntroductionThe Bureau of Mines is investigating the fundamental factors in breaking down coal at the face, which govern the production of lump coal in typical mines working, different coal beds. Tiffany and Nelson in 1923-21 conducted tests on methods of blasting and use of different explosives, in a mine working the Pittsburgh bed in Pennsylvania. They determined come of these factors quantitatively, and compared their results with those obtained when the regular mine practice was followed.Results of Previous InvestigationThe tests by Tiffany and Nelson showed that the use of the cartridge of smaller diameter than that used in mine practice, resulted in an increase of 5 per cent in the amount of lump coal passing over a 1-1/4-inch bar screen, with a reduction of 32 per cent by weight in amount of explosive required. On the other hand, they found that on reducing the weight of charge 20 per cent, and using the cartridge of larger diameter, the round would not throw down the coal satisfactorily.Experiments with ""snubbing"" showed a similar improvement in quantity of lump coal, end the coal that was blasted rolled forward into the working place. however, in recent tests at another mine where the coal Lad different physical characteristics, snubbing did not always result in the coal rolling forward, on account of clinging to the ribs, and was not found to be an advantage. Therein the writers of this paper recommend that tests be made before deciding upon the adoption of snubbing in a particular mine."

"INTRODUCTION Although many investigators have provided information on the strength and other properties of concrete the published literature cites few data on the effect of mixing cement with acid mine waters or on acid resistance of concrete in contact with mine waters. Most of the reported work on the effect of impure waters has dealt with the resistance of cement specimens to ""sulfate waters,"" that is, waters or soils with a relatively high sodium sulfate content. The ""Merriman test"" is used commonly to determine the corrosion resistance of cements for 28 days, but it does not seem certain that a cement having a high sulfate resistance in the Merriman or similar tests necessarily will show correspondingly great resistance to the sulfates of iron and, particularly, to sulfuric acid, which usually are present in acid mine waters. Extensive use of cement mortar for laying up masonry stoppings in coal and other mines and for constructing concrete mine haulageways and shaft linings, coal-storage and other retaining walls, highway bridges, culverts, and many other types of construction where it is difficult to obtain fresh water for mixing or where the structures are later exposed to contact with acid waters makes it important to know the effect of these conditions on cement and whether there is a cement better suited for such work than ordinary portland cement.CONDUCT OF THE INVESTIGATIONFor a short time early in 1935 the opportunity to obtain at least some additional information on the effect of acid mine water on cements was presented by the Relief Works Division, which provided money for irregular and indefinite employment for several months. Purchase of apparatus or material was not permitted under this arrangement, and indefinite duration of the work, intermittent employment, and finally complete cessation of the work prevented planning for extensive investigation of this particular problem."
