The goal of the program is to develop a dust collector system mounted on a ranging drum or arm shearer which will: 1) reduce the respirable dust level of the shearer operator by at least 75 percent; 2) be easily and economically mounted on an existing shearer; and 3) will not, through modifications to the shearer, reduce its safety or productive capability. The development program consists of three phases covering the activities of the design of the dust collector system, fabricating and installing it on the ranging arm or drum shearer, and conducting underground field tests on the modified mining machine.

The objective of this program was to develop nozzle designs to maximize the effective cutting length of a water jet. The results of the theoretical program directly support the Bureau of Mines Borehole Mining Program and their experimental program to improve the rock cutting capability of water jets. The borehole geometry requires turning the flow by 90 degrees and accelerating through the nozzle within a restricted length. Several suggestions for turning the flow are offered. The borehole space limitations constrain nozzle length, to the extent that a standard 13-degree tapered nozzle (6-1/2 degrees half angle) is too long to fit in the borehole, at production flow conditions. The design technique developed is computationally economical and enables examination of a large number of shapes and flow conditions. The nozzle design is based on design criteria of minimization of boundary layer thickness at the nozzle exit and minimization of the possibility of separation and cavitation. Six flow conditions, including pressures to 4500 psi and flow rates to 400 gpm, were examined, Best shapes were determined for all flow conditions. The best shape for a borehole reining application consists of an initial 4th degree polynominal (quartic) at the entrance followed by a straight section with a twenty degree (half-angle) taper at the exit.

"The distribution of the wettability of coals of different rank was determined by measurements of contact angles for individual particles. The contact angle was estimated from the equilibrium partitioning of a particle at the water/air interface. Using this technique contact angles were determined for a larger number of particles from a given sample and a frequency distribution of contact angle was obtained. The contact angle distribution was broad for all the coals tested with included an anthracite, a hvA bituminous and a sub-bituminous coal. In comparison, spherical particles of polymethylmethacrylaie gave a much narrower distribution. The distribution for irregular polyethylene particles was somewhat broader than that for the polymethylmethacrylate spheres but broader than that for the polymethylmethacrylate spheres but considerably narrower than that for coal. The broader wetting distribution for coal was attributed to differences in surface chemical properties.INTRODUCTIONA knowledge of the wetting properties of coals is very useful in coal cleaning by flotation and other processes in which separations are based on differential surface properties. The various methods available for measuring wetting characteristics include: contact angle, 1-2 time, time, 3-5 bubble attachment, 6 film flotation,7 displacement pressure, 8-9 penetration rate, 10-11 bubble pick-up, 12 induction time, 13 imbibition time, 14 and calorimetry. 15-16 Of all these methods, however, the measure¬ment of contact angle by the sessile drop and captive bubble techniques have been most widely used. Brady and Gauger"" demonstrated through the use of the contact angle method that the natural hydrophobicity of coal varied greatly from sample to sample. Subsequent experiments showed that this difference correlated well with rank, the larger contact angles generally being associated with the higher rank coals. 18-19 More recent studies by Aplan and co-workers' show that the wettability of various ranks of coals as determined by sessile drop and captive bubble methods is a more complex function of rank. The hydrophobicity of coal usually increases with rank up to about 80% fixed carbon (dmmf) and then decreases."

This report presents is an evaluation by the Federal Bureau of Mines of the effect of clay-water, brine, and oil-base drilling fluids on the productivity of test wells drilled on the Umiat anticline in U.S. Naval Petroleum Reserve No. 4 in northern Alaska. Eleven, wells were drilled on the Umiat structure as part of the U.S. Navy's extensive exploration of the Reserve during 1944-53 to determine the possibilities for oil production. The Federal Geological Survey cooperated in the exploration program and has published a comprehensive report3/ on the geology of the area and case histories of the wells. The re¬port also includes the results of special studies by the Bureau in connection with the drilling and coring of well 9 with oil-base mud in hole and was the source of much of the information used in preparing this publication. Of the eleven wells, four were drilled with rotary tools and water-base mud (one of the water-base muds was an oil-in-water emulsion mud), five were drilled with cable tools with brine in the hole, one was drilled with cable tools with brine in the hole and later reamed with rotary tools and crude oil, and one was drilled with rotary tools and oil-base mud. Although all of the wells penetrated sandstones that contained oil and gas, some were productive and others were not. The latter two wells, one completed with crude oil in the hole (with some added brine) and the other with oil-base mud, had the greatest productive capacities. The wells drilled with cable tools and brine in the hole had lower productive capacities. In contrast, two of three wells completed with rotary methods and fresh-water drilling mud and the well com¬pleted with rotary and emulsion mud were unproductive.

This report summarizes the findings of methods of treating caking coals in a fluid bed to destroy their caking properties. In batch tests it was found that several coals, including those with a free-swelling index greater than 8, could be decaed at temperatures from 400° to 425° C with a fluidizing gas composed of inert gas or steam containing 0.2 percent oxygen and a minimum residence LS,-;,' of 5 minutes. When treatment decreased the free-swelling index from about 8 to 1-1/2 or lower, the resulting treated coal was noncaking. In a continuous unit with continuous feed and discharge of coal, slightly more severe conditions were required to decake the coal. For 18- to 100-mesh coal a temperature of 430° to 440° C and an oxygen-to coal ratio of 0.4 cubic foot of oxygen per pound of coal feed was necessary. Finer mesh sizes required lower oxygen-to-coal ratios. In tests using air only as the fluidizing medium and treatment temperatures well below the softening range, the caking properties of 150- to 200-mesh coal were destroyed in 30 to 40 minutes of residence time at 200° C. Coarser sizes of 18 to 48, 48 to 100, and 100 to 150 mesh required longer residence time.

A process for removing sulfate from Great Salt Lake brines and other natural brines, including sea water, has been developed. Sulfate is quantitatively removed by precipitation as barium sulfate in a cyclic process employing ion-exchange techniques. Barium is continously recovered and recycled, and sodium carbonate and sulfur or sulfuric acid are produced as byproducts in quantities sufficient to more than defray the cost of desulfation.

This report is volume 10 of an eleven-volume final report for a Grant completed by The Pennsylvania State University for the Bureau of Mines to develop a dynamic general purpose computer simulation model for underground coal mining. The simulator developed under the Grant has a wide range of possible applications in the design and evaluation of underground coal mining systems from the standpoints of health and safety, productivity, and mine environment. The Master Design Simulator consists of nine free-standing function-oriented subsystem models linked together into an integrated, comprehensive model of an entire mining system. The subsystems comprising the Master Design Simulator include geology and reserves, methane generation, roof support, subsidence, production, rail haulage, cost, water generation, and ventilation. This volume of the final report describes the Ventilation subsystem of the Master Design Simulator. The Ventilation subsystem has the capabilities to handle: (1) branches in parallel or series, (2) fans in parallel or series, (3) multiple fans, (4) methane, compressed air, or other injections into the system, (5) leakages and fixed quantities, and (6) calculations of absolute pressure at nodes. The program uses the Kirchoff's Junction and mesh laws, and the Hardy-Cross iterative technique to converge to the desired accuracy in solving fox the head quantity. A case study is included in the report illustrating the use of the model. The appendices of the report constitute a user's manual for the Ventilation subsystem, and include a program listing.

Control of the dust produced by continuous mining machines in coal mines is generally obtained by water sprays from fixed nozzles mounted on the frame of the machine in back of the cutting head. Mounting the nozzles on the rotating head of the machine closer to the coal cutting bits may improve the efficiency of dust suppression. To test this concept, respirable dust measurements were made during 39 regular production shifts in an underground mine using a Joy 11CM continuous miner. The equipment used, difficulties encountered, and measurements obtained are described.

The twelve latexes listed in Table XI penetrated A horizon soil as shown by elution through a laboratory soil column and gave good sealing efficiency. See details in Table XII. High elution through laboratory soil columns of 4 to 6 inches depth is desirable because it predicts penetration of latex to a greater depth in the field. No definite correlation was evident between penetrating ability and particle size, surface tension, or pH. Most of the materials, however, were characterized by low surface tensions in the 36 to 53 dynes/cm range while particle sizes were usually in the intermediate range of about 1500 to 2500 Å. Naugatex J-3471 (a highly crosslinked styrene-butadiene copolymer) was the most promising of this group for stability, penetrating ability; and sealant efficiency. It also showed utility with [B] profile soil. Many of the other latexes tested in this investigation showed good sealing efficiency but were judged unsatisfactory because they gave low penetration or formed surface films with & horizon top soil. In general, latexes containing cationic surfactants were not satisfactory because they formed a heavy surface film. This is due to neutralization of the positive latex charge by the negatively charged soil particles.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) has conducted research to improve the nondestructive testing (NDT) of wire hoist ropes. Losses in the diameter of a wire hoist rope are used as one criterion for judging when a rope should be replaced. Losses are determined by periodically measuring the rope diameter and comparing this measurement with the original measured diameter; when the diameter reaches a specified minimum at any point along its length, the rope must be retired. Generally, these measurements are made at randomly selected locations along the length of the rope, using a hand caliper. To provide more accurate measurements and to allow measurements to be taken continuously along the length of a hoist rope, an optical diameter-monitoring system was built for the USBM under contract. Continuous measurements are preferable because, when combined with continuous electro-magnetic NDT results, they can indicate whether losses in metallic cross-sectional area originate from external wear or internal wear and corrosion. Tests of the system showed that the instrument met specifications when measuring wire rope at low rope speeds but was inaccurate at speeds over about 30 m/min (100 ft/min). This report describes the prototype system, presents the results of the test program, and describes the capabilities of the system.

Objective: Workers with hearing loss face special problems, especially when working in noise. How­ever, conventional hearing conservation practices do not distinguish between workers with normal hearing versus impaired hearing. This study col­lected information from workers with self-reported noise exposure and hearing loss, supervisors of such workers, and hearing conservation program managers through focus groups and in-depth inter­views to evaluate their perspectives on the impact of hearing loss on safety and job performance, the use of hearing protection, and information needed to appropriately manage hearing-impaired workers who work in noisy environments. Results: Concerns about working in noise with a hearing loss could be grouped into the following 10 categories: impact on job performance, impact on job safety, impaired ability to hear warning signals, impaired ability to monitor equipment, interfer­ence with communication, stress and/or fatigue, impaired communication caused by hearing protec­tor use, reduced ability to monitor the environment as the result of hearing protector use, concerns about future quality of life, and concerns about future employability. Mostly, there was an agree­ment between the perceptions of workers, supervi­sors, and hearing conservation program managers regarding difficulties associated with hearing loss and consequent needs. These findings suggest that noise-exposed workers with hearing loss face many of the same problems reported in the literature by noise-exposed workers with normal hearing, with additional concerns primarily about job safety as the result of a reduced ability to hear environmental sounds, warning signals, and so forth. Conclusions: The study outlines potential chal­lenges regarding job safety and hearing conserva­tion practices for noise-exposed, hearing-impaired workers. Awareness of these issues is a necessary first step toward providing appropriate protective measures for noise-exposed, hearing-impaired workers. Of the 19 million adults in the United States with some degree of hearing trouble, nearly half are currently employed in the workforce (NCHS, 1994). More than 30 million US workers are exposed to hazardous noise levels, and noise-induced hearing loss is the most common occupational disease in the United States (NIOSH, 1996). Many workers incur their hearing losses during the first 5 to 10 yrs of employment (Rosler, 1994; Ward et al., 2000) and subsequently work the rest of their careers in an environment where noise and hearing loss interact to impair their ability to hear communication and other important signals. Workers with hearing loss who are exposed to hazardous noise levels present a dilemma to hearing loss preventionists. On the one hand, it is of great importance to ensure that their residual hearing is protected from the damaging effects of the noise to which they are exposed. On the other hand, how­ever, traditional hearing protectors serve to further “deafen” such workers, making communication more difficult and impairing the detection of environmen­tal sounds and warning signals. These workers have special needs that must be addressed. However, conventional hearing conservation practices do not distinguish between workers with normal versus impaired hearing; and, to date, no governmental or professional organization has developed specific guidelines or policies concerning the accommodation of noise-exposed, hearing-impaired workers. Some research regarding noise-exposed, hearing-impaired workers has been completed. These studies have primarily focused on three areas: (a) speech intelligibility in noise versus quiet, with and without various types of hearing protection devices (Abel et al., 1982; Abel et al., 1993; Abel & Spencer, 1997; Rink, 1979; Suter, 1989); (b) signal detection and localization under similar conditions (Abel et al., 1993; Abel et al., 1985; Abel & Hay, 1996); and (c) the use of hearing aids as hearing protectors (Berger, 1986; Dolan & Maurer, 1996; Hétu et al., 1992; Hétu et al., 1993). Research in these three areas has provided an initial framework for development of a management para­digm for these workers. The Bureau of Mines developed a rapid and accurate flame photometric procedure for determining cesium and rubidium in ores and in products associated with the extractive metallurgy of these elements. The effect of associated ions is neutralized by addition of buffer solution; alkali metal effects are neutralized by parallel analyses made on standard solutions similar in composition to the sample being studied. The overall accuracy of the method is within 2.5 pct of the amount of cesium or rubidium present; the range from 1 to 25 pct is the most accurate.

The value of non fuel mineral production in Alabama in 1991 was $539.9 million, a decrease of $20.7 million, a result of the nationwide recession that was felt throughout the State's economy. The 3.7% decline in mineral sales was due primarily to a slowdown in construction, which had a major impact in the construction minerals mined instate. Production and sales of crushed stone and sand and gravel fell significantly below the value reported in 1990. Despite the recession, Alabama moved from 21st to 20th place nationally in mineral value. Mineral industry developments in 1991 were primarily in the metals manufacturing sector. Reynolds Metals Co., Sheffield, celebrated 50 years of operation in Alabama. During the November celebration, the company dedicated a $121 million expansion that included a new casting facility and sheet rolling operation. Gulf States Steel Corp., Gadsden, completed the first full year of operation of its new multimillion-dollar continuous caster.3 The Foundry of the Shoals Inc., Florence, replaced two coke-fired furnaces with electric furnaces.

Mass spectrographic studies have been conducted on the positive ions and neutral species of glow discharges containing 1.0 pct S02 and 1.0 pct CO in helium. Measurements were conducted for gas pressures from 3.5 to 10.1 torr using both dc and 60-Hz ac excitation. The ion species that were observed included S+, SO+, SO+, 0+, O2+, C+, CO+, and CO2+ with lesser amounts of SO3+, (CO)2+, SCO+, and (SO?CO)+ or CS+2. Interpretation of the functional dependence of the various ionic and neutral species on pressure and applied power showed that CO reacted with the SO formed in the discharges to produce CO2 and sulfur. Deposition of elemental sulfur was observed in the plasma container.

DOMESTIC production of carbon black increased 4 percent in 1962 to 2,056 million pounds. Furnace black output was 8 percent, or 132 million pounds, above that in 1961 and accounted for 90 percent of total carbon black production. Channel black output continued to decline and was 55 million pounds less than in 1961. Carbon black shipments during the year totaled 2,082 million pounds and were 5 percent above those of 1961. About one-fifth of these shipments were exported; the balance were sold domestically. An increase of 180 million pounds in domestic sales was partially offset by a decline of 80 million pounds in exports. Total value of carbon black production in 1962 was $145 million. The average value per pound of 7.06 cents was 0.24 cent per pound less than in 1961. Producers' stocks declined 26 million pounds during the year.

This is one of a series of papers describing mining and crushing methods and costs at cement plant quarries throughout the United States and deals directly with the methods employed and costs obtained at the Reliance quarry of the Giant Portland Cement Co. at Egypt, Pa., although it is more or less descriptive of the methods used throughout the Lehigh Valley cement district. Systems of transportation vary according to local conditions, such as proximity to the mill, depth of quarry floor with relation to the mill level, etc. Methods of prospecting differ mainly in the type f drills used. Systems of storage, crushing, and grinding vary chiefly in the types of units. This Bureau of Mines publication estimates that U.S. helium resources as of January 1977 were 710 billion cubic feet. These resources are broken down into four classifications, as follows: Helium in measured natural gas resources and in storage, 201 billion cubic feet; helium in indicated natural gas resources, 150 billion cubic feet; helium in hypothetical natural gas resources, 175 billion cubic feet; and helium in speculative natural gas resources, 184 billion cubic feet.2 Most of the helium in natural gas is presently dissipated as natural gas is consumed as fuel and for other purposes. Helium resources of the United States may also be divided into three other categories: (1) Depleting and undiscovered natural gas resources, 589 billion cubic feet; (2) nondepleting natural gas, 83 billion cubic feet; and (3) storage, 38 billion cubic feet, of which 37 billion cubic feet is federally owned and 1 billion cubic feet is privately owned. The United States does not have any significant leasehold rights in the depleting fuel gas resources. However, through the Department of the Interior, it does have leasehold rights to about 70 percent of the helium found in nondepleting natural gas, and it owns over 90 percent of the helium in storage.

This paper is published as a progress report for the first half of 1929 on the study of wining methods and costs in the Eastern and Central States. Data obtained from 25 mines using open-stope methods are correlated and summarized. Some of these mines have been described in considerable detail in reports already published as Information Circulars. In addition to the published reports on individual mines, considerable data have been obtained from other mines which were visited and studied during the course of the investigation. Many of these mines will later be described in detail in separate papers, and when the field has been covered in this manner it is planned to issue a bulletin on open-stops methods of mining which will amplify the subject matter of the present paper. Definition of ?Open-Stops?. - The term "open-stopes" as employed by the Bureau of Mines is applied to all naturally supported stopes; that is, stopes in which the excavated ore is not replaced by support of an artificial nature other than preps or stulls and in which the ore or (and) capping are not caved during the active life of the stopes.

Alaska contains many critical and strategic minerals that are scarce in the conterminous United States. Among these are tin, tantalum, and columbium. This Bureau of Mines report summarizes available data on the production, reserves, and occurrences of these minerals in Alaska. Alaska produces about 200,000 lb of tin per year, with historical production since 1901 estimated to have totaled 5,830,600 lb. Measured, indicated, and inferred tin reserves total over 140,000,000 Ib. Much of the tin production has been from the placer mines of the western Seward Peninsula; however, most of the reserves are in that area's lode deposits. Alaskan tin occurrences are part of a belt of tin mineralization that extends along the western coast of North and South America. The Alaskan portion of this "tin belt" comprises placer occurrences and lode occurrences of five major types: greisen, vein, skarn, pegmatite, and volcanogenic massive sulfide. Greisen and vein occurrences are the most abundant, but skarn deposits have historically been the most economically important. Columbium and tantalum have not been produced in Alaska; however, they may be recoverable as byproducts of tin, tungsten, gold, or uranium mining. Approximately 135,000 Ib of columbium oxide (Cb205) are inferred within the Tofty placer deposits in the Manley Hot Springs district.
