Production of mercury from the cinnabar deposits of the southwestern Arkansas mercury district began in 1931 , reached its peak in 1942 , and ended in 1944. The mines are now idle . Virtually all the cinnabar was obtained from deposits in a belt , about a mile wide , of steeply dipping sandstone beds in the overriding blocks of three thrust faults . The belt was productive for a length of about 27 miles eastward from eastern Howard County, through Pike County, into Clark County . During the early life of the district, Federal agencies watched and recorded its progress as a contributor of a strategic metal, and later, during the war, conducted investigations designed to advance its development . In 1941 , the Bureau of Mines and the U. S. Geological Survey cooperated in investigations on eight mineralized areas in the western part of the district , to wit : Hales mine , U. S. mine , Lulu Bell property, Hopkins Hill , East Gap Ridge , Gap Ridge , Parnell Hill , and Section 17 mine area . U. S. Geological Survey prepared both surface and mine maps and designated the areas to be investigated ; the Bureau did the drilling , trenching, and sampling involved in the investigations . Twelve holes , aggregating 3,539 feet of bore , were diamond drilled on six properties ; 5,309 linear feet of surface trenches were bulldozed in six areas and 19 samples taken from them ; and 86 underground channel samples were cut in two adits on one property . In 1944 , the Bureau of Mines measured mine dumps and calcine dumps in the district in an investigation of their mercury content . Two mine dumps and one calcine dump were sampled . The data pertinent to the work done by the Bureau are included in this report .

"SUMMARYFor making a comparison of magnetic surveys measured from the ground and from the air, Worcester County, Maryland, was chosen as a proving ground. Vertical magnetic intensities were observed on the ground, and total magnetic intensities were observed from the air. A comparison of the two magnetic maps reveals similar large magnetic features, but these are displaced in some instances by distances greater than a mile. Magnetic terrane in the two charts is of the same type but often differs greatly in respective characteristic features.The sacrifices in accuracy that may be expected from the use of different systems of diurnal magnetic corrections on ground observations constitute a part of this report.INTRODUCTIONThe value of magnetic surveys for gaining information concerning the crystalline basement is recognized increasingly. That this topography is often reflected to a major degree in the overlying sediments with certain offsetting is well understood. Even where such sediments are deep, the surface topography of upper formations often reflects this bedrock topography to a certain degree."

The Bureau of Mines is developing melting data for binary combinations of the alkaline earth fluorides and yttria to facilitate the formulation of slag composition. Liquidus and solidus temperatures and solid solubilities were determined for the BaF2-Y203 system, and the information is presented as the phase diagram. The phase diagram was constructed from data obtained by ceramography, X-ray diffraction, and thermal analysis of specimens encapsulated in small molybdenum ampoules. The data indicate a simple eutectic system with maximum terminal solid solubilities of less than 1 mole pct. The eutectic temperature is 1,343° C, and the composition of the eutectic is less than 1 mole pct Y203.

The domination of Bangladesh's mineral industry by natural gas was in for some possibly significant changes. A modest flow of crude oil was struck in a gas development well in the northeastern corner of the country. This was the first commercial flow of crude oil in Bangladesh. All crude oil was being imported, which cost a significant proportion of the nation's foreign exchange earnings. The development of an oilfield producing only a few thousand barrels per day would be a welcome help to the economy. Additional exploration at a 1985 coal discovery in the northwest indicated a considerable reserve of good-quality coal at a depth suitable for mining. If the coal is mined, it would be a boon to the local economy because natural gas was not available in the area.

A total of 17 mine gallery fire tests (23 including sub-tests) were completed during this report period (10/1/76 - 11/30/77), directed at identifying a hazardous timber-set fuel-loading in a mine passageway that is otherwise free of combustibles. Results of these initial tests show that the capability of a particular fuel loading for propagating a fire is dependent upon the imposed ventilation air velocity and the ignition intensity, although this dependency needs to be better defined. It is also apparent that care must be taken when relating gallery test fire behavior to actual mine fire behavior, because of the restrictive length of the gallery. Present data indicate that some modification to the instrumentation scheme may be advantageous before proceeding with future tests.

In a Bureau of Mines investigation to develop lead alloys with improved tensile strength and creep resistance, lead-base alloys containing cadmium and antimony in nominal 1-to-1 atomic ratios were melted in air, cast, and rolled into sheet to 90 percent reduction at temperatures varying from room temperature to 175° C. Tensile testing at room temperature and stress-rupture testing at 900±3° F were conducted on the as-rolled alloys. The best tensile properties were observed in an alloy of Pb-4.2 wt pct Cd-4.5 wt pct Sb which exhibited an average tensile strength of 7,270 psi with 36 percent elongation in 2 inches. An alloy of Pb-5.5 wt pct Cd-6.0 wt pct Sb had 100-hour stress-rupture values of approximately 2,100 psi and 1,000-hour values of approximately 1,700 psi.

"Abstract — Concentrations of tailpipe pollutants from diesel-powered. underground mine vehicles change over time due to engine wear and the need for maintenance. Since this deterioration in pollutant emissions may adversely affect the air quality in an underground mine, it should be monitored and controlled. This paper presents decision criteria concerning when to service a mine vehicle diesel engine. These criteria, based on mine air and tailpipe concentration measurements, are designed to maintain the tailpipe concentrations within limits that assure satisfactory mine air quality.Application of the deterioration criteria to mine vehicle emissions involves:establishing, for each pollutant, the allowable deterioration factor, anddetermining the deterioration factor, from the mine air and tailpipe diesel pollutant measurements, and the mine air threshold limit values (TLVs).If the deterioration factor is greater than or equal to the allowable deterioration factor the vehicle is removed from service for maintenance.An analysis applying the criteria to measurements made in an underground coal mine is presented. The tailpipe pollutant concentration data were collected using the Emissions Mea-surement Apparatus (EMA) developed by Michigan Techno-logical University. Since the TLV for diesel particulate matter (DPM) has not yet been established assumed mine air DPMTLVs of 15 and 1.0 mg/m3 were used in the analysis. For all of the diesel haulage vehicles included in the analysis. DPM was found to be the critical pollutant (the one most in need of control). For an assumed mine air DPM TLV of 15 mg/m3 none of the diesel haulage vehicles would he removed from service. However reducing the DPM TLV to 1.0 mg/m3 would make it necessary to remove two of the three vehicles tested from service."

The Bureau of Mines made drillability studies with impregnated diamond bits in the laboratory on 7 rock types and in the field on 21 different rock types. Results indicate that drill parameters of rotational speed, thrust, and torque must produce sufficient applied forces to induce stress levels that cause continuous failure in rock to achieve efficient penetration rates. Higher rotational speeds appear to be more effective in drilling relatively harder rocks, although the increased speed causes more bit wear; increases in thrust result in higher drilling rates but not linearly; and up to a critical value a linear relation exists between torque and penetration rate for a specific rock type. Penetration rates with impregnated bits show a trend similar to that obtained with surface-set bits for rock under 25,000 psi compressive strength.

This report presents the findings from a l-yr Bureau of Mines program in which sulfur concrete reinforcing materials were tested and evaluated to determine their resistance to corrosion. It also summarizes the permeation characteristics of sulfur concrete and the exemplary performance of precast, reinforced sulfur concrete structures in various industrial environments. The Bureau is furthering the development of sulfur concrete technology as part of a larger effort to find uses for the Nation's plentiful sulfur resources in construction materials. Sulfur concrete is a corrosion-resistant material that can be used in acid and salt environ-ments where conventional materials fail. Penetration of corrosion-inducing agents is minimized because of the low permeation characteristics of sulfur concrete.

This investigation was conducted to determine the effects of various rare-earth metal addition practices upon the macrostructure and the pattern of sulfur distribution in steel ingots. Heats of plain carbon steel were melted in a 1-ton, basic electric-arc furnace. Melts were treated with mixtures of rare-earth silicides, aluminum, and cryolite either in the furnace before tap or in the ladle after tap to determine the effects of this form of rare-earth treatment upon ingot macrostructure. Steels thus treated with rare earths in the furnace were characteristically free of the gross subsurface nonmetallics which typically result from conventional rare-earth treatments. Steel treated in the ladle showed only a few such nonmetallics, and practical techniques were developed for eliminating most of these. Results showed that furnace deoxidation was controlled by the concentration ratio of rare earths: aluminum. During casting, deoxidation was controlled by the concentration of rare earths. Oxygen contents equivalent to vacuum ladle degassing resulted from air-melt furnace treatments with the rare-earth mixtures described. Rare earths in steel inhibited the onset of equiaxed grain formation during ingot freezing, and also virtually prevented interdendritic segregation of sulfides.

The Objective: To reduce the noise generated by the exhausting air from a pneumatic roof bolting drill to a maximum of 90 decibels. Any attachment used for this purpose must be lightweight and must not cause a significant increase in back pressure. The Approach: Absorb the noise with a properly designed muffler that will permit sufficient airflow without affecting the normal operation of the drill. How It Works: The air exhausted by the drill enters the muffler through perforated disks into a resonator chamber. It then passes through a series of expansion and contraction chambers and is expelled to the atmosphere through another perforated disk. The basic muffler design for the pneumatic drill was established by using both digital computer analysis and experimentally simulated noise tests. The measured parameters used in the computer program consisted of inlet and outlet pressures, temperatures, airflows and exhaust areas. United

Electrophoretic mobility measurements of coal and pyrite particles in distilled water revealed a difference between the migration speeds of the two materials toward the anode in a dc electric field. This information led to the development of a laboratory electrophoresis column for separating fine pyrite from coal by utilizing the electrokinetic and the specific gravity differences between coal and pyrite. The study demonstrated on a laboratory scale that pyrite and other impurities can be separated from fine coal by electrophoresis using a stage separation technique. In a cost analysis, electrical power for electrophoresis was extrapolated to about $1 per ton of clean coal product. But, since the only successful tests ever made were in the laboratory with prewashed samples of minus 100-plus 325-mesh coal in distilled water, the cost figure derived is not representative of conditions prevalent in commercial coal cleaning operations. True conditions would reflect costs many times as great. In the course of the work, several scale-up techniques were considered but their feasibility became academic in view of the physical and economic problems associated with electrophoretic separation of pyrite from coal. Although the process and apparatus were finally deemed impractical for commercial coal preparation, the electrophoresis column may have some application as a laboratory device.

Previous research conducted for the USBM by Penn State personnel (Grant GO-101729) found that a need existed to physically model a typical a-c/d-c coal mine section electrical system. Its purpose would be to permit preliminary evaluations of electrical problem solutions prior to launching full-scale investigations. Such use can result in greater flexibility than afforded by present computer models. Furthermore, numerous problems, which would be virtually impossible to incorporate in a computer model at this time, are more easily analyzed with physical simulation. The development of this system is now proceeding at the USBM's Bruceton Research Facilities. However, electrical specifications of scaled down components for its construction are required. This project is a result of that need and has been funded as an extension to Grant GO-133077. The following report covers these specifications. Scope of Work To represent a mined a-c/d-r. coal mine section, the typical component specifications must detail at least: a. one a-c continuous miner, b. two a-c or d-c shuttle cars, c. one a-c or d-c roof bolter, d. one a-c section fan, and e. feeder cables. 1. Mine drainage constitutes surface or ground water which flows from mines or mine sites and is usually characterized by concentrations of acidity or alkalinity. 2. The regional geology controlling the ground water flow pattern in conjunction with the life cycle mining plan can serve as a basis for making decisions about quality of water that can be expected to be encountered. 3. In regard to the prevention and control of acid water formation in underground coal mines, much is left undone in research and education: (A) Very little literature is available on this specific subject although much has been written on water management in underground mines. (B) Little or nothing is contained in the text books and curricula used in mining departments at colleges and universities with the result that educational offerings may be seriously deficient in these areas. 4. Prohibiting water entry into underground coal mines is the best method of preventing water pollution. Since this is not possible as mining operations are extended, preventing water or oxygen from contacting acid producing material may offer the next best alternative. 5. More emphasis is needed during the mine planning stage on steps to prevent water pollution. Such life cycle considerations as type of mining, sequence of development and spatial configuration as well as the elements of the drainage network and final network organization and extent must be considered.

As a part of its overall program of coal carbonization, the Bureau of Mines is studying the coking properties of coals that may be used for metallurgical purposes. The objectives of this study were given in detail in a previous report.2/ The inherent suitability of coal for metallurgical use depends primarily on (1) chemical composition, (2) preparation characteristics, and (3) carbonization behavior. The first two factors, as well as the available reserves, are considered in selecting coals for carbonization tests. "INTRODUCTION In the course of the investigation of the occurrence of manganese deposits in the western United States, ore-dressing tests were made on three samples procured by Bureau of Mines engineers from two properties in southeastern Juah County, Utah, each of which is known by the name Black Jack. To avoid confusion, the tests will be described under the names of the owners Kendall-Duvall and the Empire Mines.None of the samples were amenable to ore dressing for the production of high-grade manganese sinter.Ores from the Kendall-Duvall deposit represent an interesting metallurgical phase of low-grade manganese occurrence, as the occurrence of manganese as silicate (braunite) automatically governs the extent to which they can be beneficiated by mechanical methods of treatment. As less than 50 percent of the total manganese was recoverable by complex methods of treatment in a 40- percent-manganese sinter, attempts were made to recover most of the manganese in a low-calcite, intermediate-grade product that might be acceptable for subsequent metallurgical treatment. By selective flotation of calcite and manganese, up to 68 percent recoveries were obtained in plus 20-percent manganese products..No encouragement can be given for successful ore-dressing of Empire ores as represented by samples received for testing, as no products were obtained that would meet minimum marketing specifications. Empire ore contained only 1 percent lime and might be high enough in grade (19 percent manganese) for direct hydrometallurgical treatment."

The Kokomo (Tenmile) mining district has had an output valued between $20 and $30 million, mostly from production of silver, lead, and zinc, since 1878. For many years before World War II, there was little production, as the complex nature of the ores made them unattractive at existing metal prices. Under the stimulus of the war, the Geological Survey and the Bureau of Mines studied they district, and in October 1944 the Bureau of Mines began an exploration project, which included dia¬mond drilling, bulldozer trenching, and geophysical surveying. Project work was continued until March 1949, except for short recesses during 1945, 1947, and 1948. Forty-five diamond-drill holes, totaling about 13,000 feet, were drilled from underground and surface stations on the various properties in the district. Eleven bulldozer trenches, abut 2,400 linear feet, were excavated in an attempt to uncover the outcrop of the middle Quail limestone. These trenches ranged from 100 to 485 feet in length and reached a maximum depth of 15 feet. A limited geophysical investigation was made during the summer of 1946. The length of the traverses were: Magnetic, 990 feet; resistivity, 6,250 feet; and self-potential, 69,780 feet.

The Bureau of Mines developed a flotation method for concentrating spiral tailing produced from pilot plant tests on the Champion mine ore fines . The feed material contained about 49 percent Fe and 15 percent SiO2 and was posed mostly of specular hematite , muscovite , and chlorite . Bench- scale , batch flotation research developed a reagent suite composed of tall oil - fatty acid , fuel oil , sulfuric acid , sodium fluoride , and sodium silicate for recovery of iron minerals in the froth product . Concentrate made with the reagent suite contained 87.3 percent of the iron and analyzed 65.6 percent Fe and 1.9 percent SiO2 . Continuous flotation tests were made with a nominal feed rate of 400 lb /hr , but without middling recirculation . Using nearly the same amount and complement of reagents as in the batch tests , three similar continuous tests gave concentrates averaging 63.9 percent Fe and 3.1 percent Sio while recovering about 86 percent of the iron .
