The performance of two large-capacity ventilation systems was compared through tests conducted in a large dead-end heading at a pilot oil shale mine in Colorado. Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) tracer gas was used to measure the performance of the two systems: a free-standing jet fan and a reversible fan with rigid duct. The tracer gas was used to simulate the production of mine air pollut-ants, including blasting pollutants, hot diesel emissions, free methane from surrounding strata, and methane desorbing from muck piles. The test room was 55 ft wide, 30 ft high, and 320 ft long. The performance of the two fans was similar, but the jet fan used less power. The tests showed that either system could provide effective ventilation during oil shale mining.

Numerous widely distributed pegmatites of the southern Black Hills of South Dakota contain small amounts of beryl, and two minor deposits are known in the northern Black Hills. Few mines have produced more than 50 tons, and the current, rate of production for the area is about 100 tons annually. Total production, since the first records, is 2,358 tons. Most of the deposits contain less than 1 percent beryl, although the beryl zones in several deposits contain 2 percent beryl or more. Estimated reserves of beryl total 11,824 tons, and an additional 234 tons has been measured; there are other unestimated reserves. The pegmatites are in a belt about the margin of the Harney Peak batholith in the southern Black Hills, although they fail into three districts. The most important, from the point of view of production and reserves, is the Keystone district. Many deposits also are found in the vicinity of Custer and Pringle. Small amounts of beryl occur in the dikes near Hill City. A little beryl has been produced from the Tinton district in the northern Black Hills, and an undeveloped dike has been discovered on Whitewood Peak near Deadwood. The beryl-bearing pegmatites are principally coarse-grained intergrowths or massive segregations of feldspar, quartz, and mica. Some of them contain notable amounts of lithium minerals, as well as some tantalite, columbite, and cassiterite.

A mineral resource survey of the 236-mil (611-km2) Hyalite-Porcupine-Buffalo Horn wilderness study area (RARE 11 Areas No. 1-155 G, Gallatin Divide; and H, Hyalite) between the Gallatin and Yellowstone rivers in Montana, indicates there are phosphate rock and petrified wood resources (fig. 1). The area also has some potential for oil, gas, and geothermal resources. Stone and alluvium are abundant but appear to have little potential for development because other sources are available nearer to markets.

The Permian Red Bed copper deposits of the South Central States are a potentially important resource. Only the higher grade, near-surface ores are now exploited because conventional froth flotation does not recover oxidized copper minerals which comprise 10 to 15 percent or more of the copper content of typical ore. Laboratory-scale beneficiation studies were initiated to devise a method capable of recovering both sulfide and oxidized copper mineral. Testing established that the high clay and gypsum content of typical ore prevented effective flotation of the oxide mineral using sulfidizing, fatty-acid, or oil emulsion techniques. A modified leach-precipitation-flotation (L-P-F) procedure recovered over 90 percent of the copper, compared to a recovery of 77 percent obtained by conventional sulfide flotation. The higher costs of the L-P-F method would reduce the increased revenue from higher copper recovery. An increase in copper price and/or an increase in oxide copper content of the ore would make the L-P-F process comparatively more attractive.

Tax for Toxic Waste Cleanup. - The Superfund Act of 1980 became effective April 1, and provides that producers of certain metals and chemical substances are to be taxed in order to fund toxic waste cleanup. Industry will provide 88% of the 5-year, $1.6 billion fund. The Environmental Protection Agency will administer the Act, but the Internal Revenue Service will be responsible for collection of the industry tax. Under the Act, nickel companies, for example, will be required to pay a tax of 0.225 cents per pound on pure nickel products produced or imported into the United States. Standard for Exposure to Lead. - The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSPA) has announced a stricter standard on the test of a worker's exposure to lead. Effective May 15, in all lead intensive occupations with the exception of those at primary and secondary lead smelters, a worker would have to be removed from his work station if the level of lead in his blood tests out at 60 micrograms of lead per 100 grams of blood, instead of the previous standard of 70 micrograms. In the case of primary and secondary lead smelters, the ruling has been stayed until June 1, 1981, to allow time for further study.

The Iron Mountain investigations were part of a comprehensive program for making a national inventory of raw materials used in the production of steel. A tentative program of core drilling by the Bureau of Mines was set up for exploration of more promising iron deposits. Iron Mountain was selected as worthy of investigation because it could serve as a potential source of ore for the war-created steel plant at Fontana, Calif. The deposits were reported on by an engineer in October 1943. The purpose of the project was to determine the lateral and vertical extent of ore bodies and to obtain accurate material data on them.

This Bureau of Mines study estimates capital investment, operating costs, and selling prices for three underground bituminous mines producing coal with annual production ranging from 1.03 to 3.09 million tons. It is assumed that the mines have a 20-year life. Wages and union welfare payments are considered as of November 12, 1973, under the Bituminous Wage Agreement of 1971, and costs for material and equipment are based on 1973 indexes. Initial capital investment ranges from $12,938,200 for the 1.03-million-ton-per-year (MJ.Vl tpy) mine to $31,435,500 for the 3.09 MM tpy mine. Total capital investment ranges from $21,607,200 to $51,982,000 for the same mines. Corresponding selling prices for the coal range from $9.11 to $8.06 per ton, assuming a 12-percent discounted cash flow rate of return after Federal income taxes.

"Exposure to airborne dust in coal mines has caused respiratory disease in coal miners. The causal agent in these diseases remains unknown, although the minerals found in and around the coal seam have been implicated. Toxicological studies designed to establish the effect of different mineral combinations and concentrations are lacking because the mineral content of coal mine dust has not been defined. This paper reports the initial results of a study done to characterize the mineral content of the coal mine dust found in a mine in the Upper Freepott seam in Northern West Virginia. Coal mine dust samples were collected using 4- stage cassette impactors at nine locations in the mine. The samples were analyzed by an x-ray microdiffraction film technique supplemented by energy dispersive scanning electron microscopy. Primary size modes of about 17 to 20 micrometers from the samples collected at the haulageway and the returnside of the continuous miner were found. From the returnside of the roof bolter samples, a primary size mode of 12to15 micrometers was measured. The minerals found in high percentages were illite, kaolinite, quartz, and calcite. The distribution of minerals in inter· and intra- location samples showed wide variations. Trends in these variations are presented. Stobbe, T. J.; Plummer, R. W.; Kim, H.; Jones. The relationship between exposure to coal mine dust and the development of various respiratory diseases has been well recognized; however, the reasons for variation in occurrence of these diseases among miners in different geographic areas,(1) rank of coal seams,(2-3) and jobs (4) remain uncertain. Several papers have reported on the causal agent in the development of these diseases. Davis (5) found that the percentage of the non-coal minerals present in the lungs of deceased miners increased as the level oi pneumoconiosis became more severe. Reisner (6) reported that cell damage caused by coal mine dust increases with the mineral and quartz content of the dust and with the geo· logical age and rank of the coals. Two studies, investigating the in vitro effects of mineral dusts. reported by Seemayer and Manojlovic (7) also obtained positive correlation between cytotoxicity and the mineral content of coal mine dust. Gormly (8) postulated that destruction of macrophages by certain mineral dusts is the first step in the development of pneumoconiosis. In 1980, Adamis and Timar (9) reported that quartz. sandstone, slate. respirable colliery dust. bentonite, illite, and some kaolins had cytotoxic effects on rat peritoneal macrophages""in vitro."" Walton,(10) however, reported that the presence of high clay, illite, and kaolin mineral exposures reversed the hazards associated with increasing quartz exposures. This finding was supported by Le Bouffant and coworkers.(11) They reported that illite present in coal mine dust strongly inhibited the pathogenic effects of quartz while kaolin had a weaker inhibitory effect."

The internal friction of eight single crystals of magnesium with orienta-tion ranging from 10° to 84° was measured at 33.5 kc and 272° C, and the results were interpreted in terms of the pinned-dislocation model proposed by Granato and Lucke. Results show that the strain-amplitude-dependent decrement varies with orientation in a manner predictable by the G-L model. Different values of strain-amplitude-independent decrement were observed at different orientation angles, but correlation with the theory was not conclusive. Problems and steps for further study are discussed.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated column flotation for recovery of a high-grade fluorite (CaF2) concentrate and byproduct concentrates from the Fish Creek fluorite deposit in Eureka County, NY. The recovery scheme consisted of (1) grinding the ore to minus 48 mesh, (2) fluorite rougher and cleaner flotation, (3) desliming the rougher fluorite flotation tailings at 20 Jjm, (4) mica flotation, and (5) silicate rougher flotation. Acid-grade fluorspar, mica, free silica (Si02) sand, and low-grade beryl (Be3Al2S~018) concentrate were produced in a 100 lb/h continuous column flotation unit (CCFU). The highest results achieved were %.6-pct CaF2 recovery in a fIrst cleaner concentrate containing 99.7 pct CaF2. Beryl recovery was as high as 92 pct at a grade of 5.3 pct BeO. The silica sand, which assayed 98 pct Si02, was recovered as the rougher beryl flotation tailings. Collector reagent consumption was reduced 45 pct for fluorite and 58 pet for silicate flotation in comparison with bench-scale conventional flotation. All products were signillcantly improved in both grade and recovery over conventional flotation results, and the recovery scheme was simplifIed by removal of several stages of flotation in the fluorite and silicate flotation steps.

"The control of respirable dust in mines has been given paramount importance due to the health and safety implications associated with fine dust. The understanding of the temporal and spatial behavior of dust has been recognized as essential for increasing the efficiencies of the existing control techniques and for developing new control strategies. Mining-related studies in this area are, in general, limited. They are also mostly experimental. Some mathematical and computer analyses have been attempted. In this paper, first a review of the mathematical studies performed in the last three decades in this area is presented. Second, a mathematical model for analyzing dust flow in mines is proposed. The model takes into account a number of factors affecting dust transport. It incorporates varying dust generation source strengths and dispersion, deposition, and coagulation of dust in mine airways. Finally, application areas for the model are discussed. A computer program based on the mathematical model has been developed. The program will output the dust concentration in the mine atmosphere as a function of time and distance from the source. The amount of dust deposited on the sides, roof, and floor of the airway is also determined.IntroductionAn airborne dust cloud is a complex system containing particles of varied size, density, shape and state of aggregation. The behavior of the particles is dependent on a number of complex physical mechanisms, often opposing in nature. The net interaction results in the ambient concentration. This size dependent behavior of particles contrasts with that of gases, an area quite widely studied.The term aerosol is used to describe clouds of microscopic and submicroscopic particles in air such as chemical smoke or particulate matter released from smoke stacks. An aerosol system can be regarded as an arbitrary element of volume filled with gas and suspended particles of possible highly variable physiochemical nature. The parameters that are used to describe an aerosol system include concentration, mass average velocity and particle mass and radius. In characterizing such systems, several assumptions are made. Among these is the assumption that particles are smooth, inert and rigid spheres. Again, for example, when the particles are in transport, the possibility of collision exists. As a result of the collision, the particles may coalesce to form larger particles. The probability of sticking is considered a known quantity (lady, 1970). In this paper, the application of the principles used in aerosol systems is explored for the study of the transport and deposition of fine coal dust in underground mines."

The Bureau of Mines developed a process using ion exchange to recover cobalt from spent copper leach solutions. A preliminary economic evaluation of the process indicated that about one-third of the capital cost was attributed to the total resin inventory, and one-third of the operating cost was required for reagents to remove iron from the ion-exchange eluates. An agitated Pachuca elution system was investigated in place of a fixed-bed elution system. The Pachuca system reduced the resin inventory by 27 pet when compared with the fixed-bed elution system. Processing fresh spent copper leach solution reduced the resin inventory by 20 pct and resin iron loading by 80 pct. Reagent requirements for removing iron from the eluates were decreased because less iron was extracted. The Pachuca system, along with processing fresh spent copper leach solution, reduced the total resin inventory by 47 pct. A revised cost evaluation of the cobalt recovery process was obtained to determine the effects of these process modifIcations. The estimated total capital cost for a plant processing 10,000 gpm of spent copper leach solution containing 26 ppm Co was $23.1 million. With credits for nickel, zinc, and copper byproducts, the estimated net operating cost was $5.10/lb of cobalt.

This report describes a 4-inch diameter borehole probe which contains a low light level TV camera, magnetic compass, light illumination source, bottom/water detector sensor and a pointing angle sensor. The camera viewing angle is at a right angle to the probe's body. All data from the sensor is multiplexed into the closed circuit camera video for transmission on a single 50 ohm coaxial cable to a surface control unit. Likewise control of the probe's power, zoom lens, focus, panning and aperture is accomplished via a down-link multiplexed on the same cable.

A Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) program was used to model buoyancy induced Product-Of-Combustion (POC) spread from experimental fires in the National Institute For Occupational Safety And Health (NOSH), Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL), safety research coal mine. In one application, the CFD program was used to predict spread from fires in an entry under zero airflow conditions. At a location, 0.41 m below the entry's roof at a distance of 30 m from the fire, the measured smoke spread rates were 0.093 and 0.23 m/s for a 30 and a 296 kw fire, respectively. The CFD program predicted spread rates of 0.15 and 0.26 m/s based upon the measured fire heat production rates. Based upon a computation with [c3h3] as the hydrocarbon fuel, a predicted 5 PPM co alert time of 70 s at a distance of 30 m from the fire is to be compared with the measured alert time of 148 s. In a second application, the CFD program was used to analyze smoke flow reversal conditions, and the results were compared with visual observations of smoke reversal for 12 diesel fuel fires. The CFD predictions were in qualitative agreement with visual observations of smoke reversal.

It is estimated that more than 1 trillion cubic feet of methane is contained within the coals of the Mary Lee group in Jefferson, eastern Tuscaloosa, and southern Walker Counties, Ala. Most of this methane will be encountered by mining. Coals of the Mary Lee group are presently being mined at depths exceeding 1,000 feet and will in the near future be mined at even greater depths, where the problem of methane gas affecting the mining operations will be acute. It is calculated that approximately 90 pct of the methane is at depths greater than 1,000 feet, and over half of the gas is contained within only 12 pct of the study area which is under more than 1,500 feet of over-burden. Degasification in advance of mining will increase mine safety, reduce ventilation expenditures, increase productivity, provide an additional energy source, and make it possible to mine parts of deep coalbeds that probably could not otherwise be mined.

"IntroductionAir sampling for airborne contaminants requires a system for moving air, a collection method, and a procedure to determine the quantity of contaminant collected. Because occupational exposure limits and air quality standards frequently are expressed in terms of concentrations, a method of determining the volume of air sampled is also needed. The four principal components in a sampling train are shown in Figure 12-1. The inlet admits the air sample into the train; the collector(s) separates the gas, vapor, or particles from the air; the flowmeter measures the rate or total quantity of air sampled; and the pump (air mover) provides the suction required to draw an air sample through the train. Inlet sampling considerations are discussed in Chapter 21. Various types of collectors are described in subsequent chapters. Flowmeters are discussed in Chapter 7.This chapter will describe the air mover portion of the sampling train and air sampling systems that contain three or four components in a convenient package. The chapter consists of two parts. The first part contains a brief description of the different types of air movers and air sampling systems. The second part consists of tables and figures showing detailed information on a wide variety of commercially available air movers and sampling systems. ient size is filled with a liquid in which the suspected contaminant is insoluble. When the liquid is allowed to escape from the vessel, it is replaced by air from the atmosphere to be sampled. Such an air sample is an integrated sample rather than an instantaneous sample because the mass of fluid requires a finite time to empty. In fact, by employing a large vessel with controlled drainage, this method can be used to move air at low flow rates through a sample collector for extended intervals. Various ores from deposits in the Boulder Dam Recreational Area, Clark County, Nev., were submitted for ore-dressing tests as part of the Bureau of Mines studies of western manganese ores. The Virgin River manganese deposit is situated on the Virgin River arm of Lake Mead, 5 miles from Bonelli's Point, which was formerly the junction of the Virgin and Colorado Rivers. It is 20 miles from Overton, Nev., and 26 miles from Boulder City, Nev. The ore body, composed of wadlike manganese in a tuffaceous gangue, is a flat-lying bed overlain with beds of gypsum and basalt. Two ore samples were submitted by engineers of the Bureau for ore-dressing investigation. Low-grade sample 1 was a composite of channel samples cut from outcrops of the ore body; sample 2, of intermediate manganese grade, was taken from the dump-at the exploratory shaft sunk by the Bureau. The Boulder City manganese deposit is situated in the Boulder Dam Recreational Area -3 miles southwest of Boulder City. The ore body is a manganiferous gypsum bed 32 feet thick, slightly inclined from the horizontal. The ore sample submitted-by engineers of the Bureau for-testing was taken from channel cuts in the walls of the shaft, which cuts through the bed vertically.

"INTRODUCTION The Miscellaneous Minerals Division of the War Production Board requested the Bureau of Mines to investigate the Gallatin corundum property as a possible source of corundum, which was in short supply due to the war. The Gallatin corundum property, also known as the ""Fuller mine"", the ""Montana Corundum mine"", and as the ""Old Qorundum mine"" was first examined by a Bureau of Mines engineer 2/ in July 1943. Bureau of Mines work on the property started October 11, 1943, was recessed May 5, 1944, and was resumed in October 1944 when the diamond-drilling program started. The project was completed February 7, 1945. The data obtained are given in this report.The Federal Geological Survey made a reconnaissance survey in the spring of 1943 and mapped the area the following autumn. The results of these surveys are contained in a memorandum report prepared in December 1943.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. "Usually a newly developed machine leaves the factory ""on a wing and a prayer."" The manufacturer hopes that the operator will hasten to report defects. In turn, when the suggestions arrive the manufacturer makes the required changes and maintains close collaboration with the operator. Thus the history of our machines of today is written.Laboratory concentration tables are exceptions to growth by experiment and collaboration. Their operation never enters directly into the cost sheet; they are seldom used for longer periods than 10 minutes; and the experimenter, while hurrying to another job, accepts the table, good or bad, for a quick test on his ore. Thus we go back about 50 years when we use the preset in factory-built laboratory table.The Southern Experiment Station, Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the University of Alabama, recognized the existence of a tabling problem net usually considered. The determination of the ignition temperature of diethyl ether and ethylene in air and omen which is described in this report was made primarily for comparison with similar determinations of other compounds in the same apparatus and using the see laboratory technique. The investigation was conducted at the Pittsburgh Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Mines with the cooperation of Merck & Co., Inc.
