This report summarizes the results and conclusions reached by various investigators who have attempted to determine the extent to which hydraulic fracturing will affect the secondary recovery of crude oil by waterflooding. It also discusses the most advantageous use of this well-stimulation method in waterflood projects. A thorough search of the literature was made, and pertinent information was abstracted from appropriate reports. A carefully designed and controlled program of formation fracturing is an effective aid in waterflooding because it increases water-injection and oil-production rates. Generally, fracturing has resulted in little or no reduction in ultimate oil recovery, but under certain circumstances recovery has been substantially increased.

Long-haul dump (LHD) vehicles used in underground mining are known to expose workers to important levels of whole-body vibration1. These vehicles are generally designed without suspension and may be categorized as small or large LHDs depending on whether their respective load capacities are lower or larger than 3.5 cubic yards. While the majority of older vehicles are equipped with a rigid or unsuspended seat, more recent LHDs often incorporate a suspension seat. The objective of this study was to define the vibration spectral characteristics of most commonly encountered large and small LHD vehicles operating in mining operations. This was done in an effort to categorize the vehicles in terms of vibration spectral classes to be reproduced on a laboratory whole-body vibration simulator to assess the vibration attenuation performance of a typical LHD suspension seat. Methods Vertical vibration measured at the seat attachment point of 8 small and 8 large LHD vehicles operating underground in typical mining operations under loaded and unloaded conditions was considered as the basis for defining the spectral classes. By regrouping the data collected for each LHD vehicle size and load condition, the overall distribution of acceleration power spectral density (PSD) of measured floor vibration was determined over the 0.5 to 20 Hz frequency range. Mean and envelopes of maximum and minimum values of PSD spectra were computed to define the spectral classes, along with the corresponding values of frequency weighted rms acceleration determined in accordance to the ISO 2631-1 standard2. These spectra were further used to calculate the displacements needed to drive a whole-body vibration simulator consisting of a platform supported by two servo-hydraulic actuators having a total stroke of ±100 mm. For validation purposes, the vibration acceleration spectra measured on the simulator were compared with the target spectra representing the spectral classes. Finally, the vibration transmissibility characteristics of a typical suspension seat were determined under sine sweep excitation using both a rigid mass load and a human subject having a mass of 62 kg and 85 kg, respectively. The SEAT value, representing the ratio of seat to base frequency-weighted rms acceleration, was further measured under each of the defined LHD vibration spectral classes by loading the seat with an 85 kg subject. Tests were repeated three times and the mean SEAT values were determined to assess the seat’s ability to reduce exposure to whole-body vibration in LHD vehicles. Results Three spectral classes applicable to both loaded and unloaded conditions were defined as shown in Figure 1: one for large and two for small LHDs. The influence of load on frequency-weighted rms acceleration was found to be negligible for large and Class I small LHDs, while a shift of the peak acceleration PSD to lower frequencies was noted for the loaded vehicles. The possibility of replacing the brattice cloth closest to the coal mine working face with an air curtain mounted on top of a continuous-mining machine or with a diffuser fan was explored by the Bureau of Mines. Preliminary tests conducted at a full-scale model working face with the brattice end set at 18 feet showed that the air curtain improved face ventilation only slightly and was not nearly as effective as placing the brattice at 10 feet. A 2,000-ft3/min diffuser was more effective than the air curtain. It is concluded that the air curtain probably could not function as a line brattice extension, although the diffuser fan may have some potential.

The objective of the research reported in this publication of the Federal Bureau of Mines was to devise a mineral dressing procedure that would concentrate zinc silicate minerals from certain deposits in southwestern Missouri. The best flotation results were obtained by batch laboratory flotation using sulfidizing agents and ethoxylated cocoamine. The flotation concentrate contained 70 percent of the zinc at a grade of 47.8 percent. Gravity concentration tests showed that 55 percent of the zinc could be recovered at a grade of 48.3 percent.

During development mining, ventilation capacity may decrease and the ventilation requirements may depart from initially planned values depending on the mining rate, increases in the methane emission rate, and changes in ventilation airway leakages. Insufficient ventilation air quantities and the occurrences of high methane liberation rates can overwhelm the existing quantity of ventilation air and result in elevated levels of methane gas during development mining. This condition can both limit the development of that section and increase the risk for an ignition that may lead to an explosion. Thus, the prediction of ventilation air requirements prior to mining can enhance worker safety by reducing the likelihood that explosive methane-air mixtures form. This study presents an approach for prediction of methane inflow rates using coalbed methane reservoir modeling. For this purpose, a two-phase coalbed reservoir model of a three-entry type roadway is developed. In the model, grids are dynamically controlled to simulate development of entries. Examples are given for methane inflow and ventilation air requirements as a function of mining rate, development section length, mining height, and the existence of degasification boreholes. This technology can be used to limit the methane concentrations occurring as a result of the influences of various coalbed and operational parameters.

The Bibliographic Data Base contained in the present volume is the result of a literature search conducted as one task of the Bureau of Mines project concerned with research in borehole assay technology. The data base includes articles, symposia, books, corporate and government reports, patents, and other literature concerned with some aspect of borehole logging, from January 1969 through December 1975. Occasional updating to keep the data base current is anticipated. The remainder of the intro¬duction will be devoted to the explanation of the organization of each entry, along with the translation of terms and abbreviations used in the text. Each entry contains six sections. These include an ID code, a title, an author section, a source section, an abstract, and a descriptor section. The first item listed in an entry is the ID code. This serves to identify an entry. It consists of the first six characters of the first author's (or editor if no authors are involved) last name, along with the last two digits of the year of publication. A letter sometimes follows the year of publication to assure a unique alphanumeric code. For example, if an author named Wilson writes more than one piece of literature in a given year (for example, 1972), the ID code for the entries identifying these pieces of literature would be identical. Therefore, to allow for unique ID codes, the first piece would he identified as "WILSON 72,', the second piece as "WILSON 72A", the third "WILSON 72B", and so on.

To reduce the exposure of mining machine operators to respirable dust. Approach: A protective curtain of filtered air is blown down around the operator's head, from a manifold mounted on the machine canopy. How It Works: Mine air is drawn into the system through a filter which removes respirable dust. The filtered air enters a centrifugal blower which pushes it through a flexible hose to a manifold mounted on the canopy above the operator. Air leaves the manifold through a perforated plate and flows down around the operator's head. A photograph of an installed system can be seen in Figure 1. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has been conducting research at a Pittsburgh Coalbed longwall mine to evaluate and optimize bleeder ventilation and gob gas venthole longwall methane control systems. Gas flow into these two methane control systems was investigated using a combination of Sulphur Hexafluoride (SF6) tracer gas studies and gob venthole pressure monitoring experiments. The insights gained from this research has facilitated the development of along wall subsided strata methane control system conceptual model. This model provides the basis for design suggestions to increase the efficiency of the gob gas venthole system to permit the bleeder ventilation system to become a "safety net" for methane control.

The Derby and Alexander Claim, located within the Tunnel Ridge Wilderness Study Area (WSA), has placer gold resources. No lode deposits are known within the area, but lode gold deposits are found within 1 1/2 mi of the WSA. In additon, rock units which contain lode gold deposits north of the WSA are found within the northern portion of the study area. INTRODUCTION The Tunnel Ridge Wilderness Study Area (WSA), CA-030-402, encompasses 4,623 acres of BLM administered public land in Trinity County, California, about 35 mi west-northwest of Redding (fig. 1). Major access to the Tunnel Ridge vicinity is by U.S. Highway 299. Ac-cess to the WSA boundary is by a secondary paved road from Junction City and several light duty dirt and gravel roads (fig. 2). The WSA is on the southwest slope of Weaver Bally Mountain. The topography is rugged with moderate to steep slopes; elevations range from about 1,600 ft to 5,900 ft.

Mineral analyses and electrical resistivity measurements of 324 representative samples of oilfield brines from 24 oil-productive counties in Mississippi and Alabama are presented in tabular form. Results of the mineral analyses, which include calcium, magnesium, carbonates, bicarbonates, sulfates, chlorides, sodium, and barium (with strontium if present), are reported in milligrams per liter. Electrical resistivity measurements in ohm-meter2 per meter at 75° F are reported in ohm-meters in the tables. Chemical analyses of formation waters are helpful to operators having water problems associated with petroleum recovery; electrical resistivity values are helpful in making interpretations from electric logs.

The prevention of accidents from falls of roof and coal requires a considerable amount of personal judgment , for conditions are different even in adjoining working places in the same mine , and conditions may change from hour to hour even in the same working place as the coal is shot down and loaded . Experience has shown that many men can not or do not exercise enough care to protect themselves from injuries ; moreover , where the foremen have been made directly responsible for the safety of the men under them , accidents from falls of roof and coal have , in many instances , been reduced as much as 50 per cent . There is now no question that careful , constant , and intensive supervision is essential in preventing acci- { dents and more especially accidents of this class . Falls of roof and of coal account for approximately 50 per cent of all coal mine accidents and annually result in the death of approximately 1,000 men and cause lost - time injury to approximately 50,000 men . These and other accidents are recurring with little or no diminution , usually not because of the lack of knowledge of safe and dangerous practices , or of the technique of safety , but largely because of the lukewarm interest of major executives in safety or the failure of mine officials to formulate and to enforce common - sense rules and regulations . When failure is the outcome of a sincere attempt of the managing officials to teach safety to the miner , the fault may usually be attributed to misguided effort . Various solutions for the problem of eliminating accidents from falls of roof or coal have been suggested , some of which are : Standard system of timbering for the specified mining districts ; departure from the room-and - pillar system to a more concentrated system of mining ; more intensive supervision - that is , 1 section foreman for every 25 loaders instead of 1 section foreman for 75 , 80 , or even more loaders the practice in most mining districts . - However , investigations conducted by the writer at numerous mines operated by a number of mining companies in several districts show that employees and officials alike are inclined to work under loose and unsupported roof , relying solely on the " drummy " sound and on their judgment and experience as to whether the roof will stay in place for one hour or for several hours . With but few exceptions , men who had been injured by falls of roof or ccal or were found working under loose and unsupported roof , admitted that they knew of the possibly unsafe condition , but it was their opinion that the roof or coal was not loose enough to fall for some time .

The Bureau of Mines investigated the occurrence of slickensides in mine roof in the Pittsburgh coalbed in a portion of the Valley Camp No.3 mine in southwestern Pennsylvania to improve the potential for prediction of slicken-sided zones and determine the orientations of the most prominent slickensided planes. Two distinct types of slickensides were identified; those which were associated with clay veins observed in the coalbed (genetic), and those which were unrelated to any visible structure (nongenetic). The study draws three conclusions: (1) Nongenetic slickensides are not the result of tectonic forces, (2) both genetic and nongenetic slickensides tend to dip at an angle of 30°, and (3) genetic slickensides tend to be alined parallel to the trend of the clay vein and usually dip toward the center of the clay vein. A schematic roof bolting plan is presented that may provide improved roof support where slickensides are present. Roof stability could be improved by supplemental bolting in the direction normal to the plane of slickensides.

Cameroon's mineral industry continued to be dominated by crude petroleum. The country's economic development depended on the production and export of crude oil. Oil output was estimated to be 56 million barrels in 1984 compared with 47 million barrels in 1983 and 39 million barrels in 1982. The country's only refinery processed approximately 16,000 barrels per day of crude oil in 1984, operating at slightly over 50% capacity. This volume, however, supplied the domestic need for motor fuel and heating oils. Cameroon's economy continued to expand despite problems and setbacks stemming from the attempted coup of April 6, 1984. Gross domestic product (GDP) growth in 1984 was 6.5%, the same rate as in 1983. Offshore crude petroleum production was the chief factor in the sustained economic growth. The country also maintained a relatively strong balance-of-payments position through oil exports. Investment, ranging up to 25% of the GDP, greatly contributed to sustained growth. The oil sector contributed approximately 14% to Cameroon's GDP in both 1983 and 1984.

In 1989, Alabama's nonfuel mineral industry produced a State record of $463 million of nonfuel mineral commodities, an increase of $4 million over that reported by the State's mineral producers in 1988. The new record marked the fourth consecutive year in which mineral production increased over that of the previous year. Alabama ranked 22d among the States in total mineral value. Cement, stone, and sand and gravel were the three leading mineral commodities produced, accounting for 77% of Alabama's total mineral value. During the year, there were several acquisitions by Alabama cement and stone companies, and the only tantalum mine in the United States completed its first full year of operation.
