U.S. Bureau of Mines researchers investigated the development of an innovative transport system for underground coal mining. A one-half commercial-scale bench model was constructed. Novel magnetic levitation (mag-lev) technology was developed. Frictionless and contact-free transport of a prototype materials container and payload has been demonstrated.

Coal-bearing regions cover about 18,464 square miles or one third of Iowa, primarily in the south-central part of the state. Coal quality ranges from subbituminous to high volatile bituminous. Iowa's coal reserves are estimated to be 2.2 billion tons, less than one-half of one percent of total U.S. reserves. Coal beds are typically thin seams with a maximum thickness of five feet. Coal deposits in Iowa were fist mined in the 1840s for blacksmithing and domestic purposes. Demand for coal increased with the use of coal to fuel steamboats and railroads. Production peaked in 1917, when Iowaproduced9 million tons of coal. Since then, conversion to natural gas and fuel oil has decreased the demand for coal. Today, electrical power generating plants have created a continuing, but declining, demand for Iowa's coal. Coal production in Iowa is by surface mining methods. The Iowa regulatory program was conditionally approved January 21, 1981. Full approval was received March 28,1982, and the Abandoned Mine Land Program was approved March 28, 1983.

In 1988, Albania's centrally planned economy continued to decline. The country's officially published yearend economic report did not contain concrete results such as the growth of national income or industrial output. 2 The shortfall for central budget earnings for 1988 amounted to 9% below the planned target. Losses in industry were attributed to poor management and organization, as well as to low technical standards and excessive consumption of fuels and raw materials. The construction, energy, and mining sectors of industry did not meet their annual production plans. As in 1987, within these sectors, the chromite and petroleum extracting and processing industries continued to lag in output. Both chromite and petroleum remained Albania's chief sources of foreign exchange; the production downturn of these commodities continued to negatively affect the country's foreign trade position, especially in view of constitutional prohibitions against using foreign credit to finance trade. The chief events in the minerals industry in 1988 included the construction startup of the first of four planned new concentrators at the Bulquize chromite mine, as well as the construction startup of new ferrochromium capacities at Elbasan. Also, the copper mining industry reported the completion of facility expansion at the Perlat mine in the Mid-rite district. Albania began new facility construction at the Dinamo heavy-equipment enterprise at Tirana to maximize self-sufficiency in mining equipment production. Upon completion, the new factory would double the out-put of mining equipment at the enterprise and would introduce new designs for electric trucks and pneumatic drills for the mining industry. The new facility would also increase the production of new machinery and equipment for the country's beneficiation plants.

"Contained in this chapter is a listing of the publications and reference books which have come about as a result of respirable dust research performed by faculty, staff and graduate students in the Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust at The Pennsylvania State University, West Virginia University, University of Minnesota, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Michigan Technological University. These publications have appeared in scientific journals, proceedings of the national and international symposiums, and professional meetings. Complete citations of the publications can be found in Volumes 3 through 6 and Volume 8 of this series. The agenda of the last annual GMTC seminar, held at West Virginia University on February 1 - 2, 1988, follows. The project presentations are organized under the five research areas. All projects currently active were presented to the Advisory Committee. New project submissions were not. The authors were allotted thirteen (13) minutes for their presentations; the remainder of the twenty (20) minutes allotted for each project was used for introductions, transitions, and questioning by the Advisory Committee. Each author used a standard format for presentation of his/her materials for review; handout materials were distributed to the Advisory Committee for reference. Opening remarks were made by Dr. Richard Bajura of West Virginia University and Dean Robert L. Frantz and Dr. Raja V. Ramani of The Pennsylvania State University.The Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust is funded by the U.S. Bureau of Mines through the Mining and Mineral Resources Research Institute Program. The direct method test was developed for general mine safety applications by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in the early 1970's to measure the gas content of coal samples obtained from the relatively shallow depths of eastern U.S. coal mines. Over time, applications for gas content data evolved which required increasingly accurate desorption values. It became evident that some of the inherent weaknesses in the original direct method test could best be addressed by abandoning the water displacement based desorbed gas volume measurements. The ideal gas law based modified direct method (MDM) and associated desorbed gas volume measurement apparatus was developed to provide the most accurate desorption values possible for rock samples obtained from any gas-bearing strata. The MDM has a number of significant advantages, including: (1) increased accuracy, especially for low gas content samples, (2) a test apparatus with an integral sampling port to facilitate the collection of uncontaminated gas samples, (3) an inherent head space effect correction in the periodic MDM desorbed gas volume calculations, (4) measurement of positive and negative desorbed gas volumes, (5) elimination of differential gas solubility effects as a source of error inherent in the water displacement methods, and (6) a compact and rugged test apparatus that along with the elimination of the ?glassware? required for the water displacement methods, facilitates its use in the field.

Background: Frictional ignitions continue to be a problem facing the U.S. underground coal mining industry. Many methane igni-tions are associated with the impact of mining machine cutter bits on quartzitic material (e.g., sandstone) during the coal-cutting process. Most ignitions result in small methane-air fireballs often only a few feet in size and limited to the cutter head location. However, under certain conditions, frictional ignitions can lead to larger methane explosions and/or fires with the potential for causing serious injury or death to the mining machine operator and other nearby miners. The requirements for a frictional ignition are a flammable volume of methane-air and an ignition source. This source is usually the hot streak caused by the frictional impact of the mining bit on hard rock, and the frequency of occurrence increases with increased bit wear. Another possible ignition source is the fric-tional impact of rock on rock during a roof fall.

In the absence of values for each influencing parameter and a known relationship of input-output space, novel approaches should be implemented as proxy solutions to mathematically complicated problems. Proxy solutions can be in the form of linear or non-linear multiple regression equations. Predicting the performance of gob gas ventholes is one of these mathematically complicated problems as it is difficult to know the exact relationships between various parameters influencing gob gas venthole (GGV) performance from active and sealed (completed) longwall panels. In this paper, a discussion of the NIOSH-developed software suite for methane control and prediction (MCP) based on an artificial neural network (ANN) is presented. The application of the ANN-based software suite to develop algebraic relationships for gob gas venthole performance prediction in sealed and active longwall panels is sought. Output information obtained from the NIOSH-MCP software as a response to various input parameters were used to create an input-output database for total flow and methane percentage from GGVs operating in active mines during completed and sealed panel situations. Due to the multi-variable nature of the software, outputs generated using the software for various inputs were used to develop analytical equations first using linear and then second using non-linear multivariable regression techniques. The advantage of this method is its ability to better understand the significant parameters of the relationships between the inputs and outputs for gob gas venthole production in active and sealed panels and to be able to predict their performances using relatively simple analytical functions.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a study to evaluate the effect of underground mining conditions on the activation of automatic sprinkler heads. Sprinklers were exposed to liquid fuel fires in a rectangular tunnel at airflows of 0, 45, 90, 150, and 250 m/min to determine the effect of ventilation and fire size on the time to activation. As the airflows were increased, the time to activate the sprinklers for a given fire size increased. Also, as the fire size increased, the activation time decreased. Temperature profiles of the tunnel showed that the maximum temperature near the roof was shifted downstream as the airflow increased. Experiments to determine the effect of rated activation temperature and response time index (RTI) value on activation time showed that the time to activate increased with increasing activation temperature, and decreased with decreasing RTI value. Exposure to the mine environment showed little effect on the activation times in large-scale experiments, and no significant effect in laboratory experiments. The results showed that airflow can have a significant effect on the activation times of automatic sprinklers. This needs to be considered in the design of effective sprinkler suppression systems for ventilated areas.

From time to time the Bureau of Mines has issued publications dealing with the various classes of explosion-proof mining machinery that have been tested and approved as permissible for use in mines having atmospheres that may become inflammable by reason of the inadvertent presence of gas or dust. These publications are confined almost entirely to description of the features contributing directly or indirectly to the prevention of explosion or shock hazards, and are intended to give inspectors, safety engineers, and others already familiar with the general safety requirements more detailed information on the safety features of the design of a particular machine. As a background for papers describing permissible machines and to avoid the necessity of duplicating descriptions of methods of conducting investigations and tests of such machinery, Bureau of Mines Bulletin 305, Inspection and Testing of Mine-Type Electrical Equipment for Permissibility, was published in 1929. Three bulletins giving detailed descriptions of the three most numerous types of machines have been issued, viz., Bulletin 313, Permissible Storage-Battery Locomotive and power Trucks. Bulletin 343, Permissible Coal-Handling Equipment. Bulletin 382, Permissible Coal-Cutting Equipment.

The Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (MINER ACT) established a Technical Study Panel (The Panel) to provide recommendations on the utilization of belt air and new technology that may be available for increasing the fire resistance properties of conveyor belt used in underground coal mines. The Panel Report recommended use of the Belt Evaluation Laboratory Test (BELT) as the method for testing and approval of flame resistant conveyor belts used in underground coal mines. The research conducted to establish the correlation of the BELT with large-scale belt fire flammability tests was done using 36- to 42-in wide conveyor belt. Due to today?s coal haulage capacity, the mining industry is using 72-in and wider conveyor belts. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a study to determine if the BELT will also qualify wider belts as fire resistant for use in underground coal mines. This paper describes the results of recent experiments comparing results from using the BELT and the large-scale tests for six different belts.

"Quantifying exposure to diesel exhaust aerosol in an underground coal mine depends on the ability to measure this component of respirable mine aerosol separately from coal dust. Such measurement is complicated by the carbonaceous nature of both the diesel and coal dust particulate that make up the respirable aerosol. Hence, special sampling and analytical techniques must be used to distinguish between these two aerosol components.As part of a continuing study of diesel exhaust aerosol characteristics, the U.S. Bureau of Mines has applied size selective sampling together with gravimetric analysis to separate and measure respirable diesel exhaust and coal dust aerosol concentrations in diesel-equipped underground coal mines. This technique is based on the premise that the diesel portion of the aerosol is predominantly submicrometer and the mineral dust portion is mostly greater than 1 µm in size. In the study, chemical mass balance (CMB) modeling, based on the distribution of chemical elements in aerosol and aerosol source material samples, is used to referee the analysis of diesel exhaust and mineral dust aerosol concentrations from the size selective sampling results.Based on the results of the study, the Bureau, in cooperation with the University of Minnesota and the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), have developed a prototype personal diesel exhaust aerosol sampler for underground coal mines. The sampler has three stages: a preclassifier stage to select for respirable aerosol, an inertial impaction stage with an aerodynamic diameter(d) size cut at 0.8 µm to separate diesel aerosol from mineral dust and collect the mineral dust, and a final filtration stage to collect the diesel fraction of the sample. The sampler has been evaluated in both laboratory and field experiments conducted by the Bureau, MSHA, and the Generic Minerals Technology Center for Respirable Dust (GMTC-RD)."

For example: • The former Soviet republics have occurrences of methane and hydrogen in apatite, gold, and diamond ores, where solid or liquid bitumen occurs in the rock. • Scandinavian iron ore deposits include methane and other hydrocarbons in boreholes that intersect pitch and asphalt within the deposits, and methane and nitrogen in boreholes and fissures in arsenic and sulfide ores.

Changes in the 1980 quantity and value of the sales of various natural abrasives, compared with the data for 1979, were of a mixed nature. Output of garnet and special silica stone products increased in both tonnage and value during the year, while emery and tripoli-type materials production decreased in both tonnage and value. The reported quantity and value of sales of manufactured abrasive material-fused alumina and alumina-zirconia, silicon car-bidet and metallic iron and steel shot and grit-also decreased for 1980. This report describes reconnaissance by the Federal Bureau of Mines of titanium-bearing sandstone in Kemper County, Miss. The purpose was to determine the ilmenite, rutile, and associated heavy-mineral content of black-sand-bearing Eocene deltaic formations" The investigation was part of a survey of titanium resources of the United States. Ilmenite (FeTi03), an iron-titanium oxide, is the major titanium-bearing mineral consumed in the titanium pigment industry. Rutile (Ti02), titanium oxide, is used mainly in producing welding-rod coatings and titanium metal. The fieldwork was conducted during the first half of November 1959. Seven holes, totaling 304 feet of bore, from which 64 samples of cuttings were taken, were drilled in the north-central part of the county; and two holes, totaling 172 feet of bore, from which 34 samples of cuttings were taken, were drilled in the southeastern part.

In 1984, the Bureau of Mines evaluated an area previously identified as having "probable mineral resource potential" for copper, lead, zinc, gold, or silver within the Elkhorn Wilderness, about 5 miles west of Winston, MT. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the mineralized structures at nearby mines and prospects outside of the Wilderness extend into and contribute to the anomalous zone and, if so, to expand the domestic supply of strategic and critical mineral resources for future needs by identifying and quantifying resources on public lands. Fifty-eight soil samples, 23 rock samples, and 1 stream sediment sample were collected in the Staubach Creek area. Overall sample analyses suggest the anomalous zone in the Staubach Creek drainage is possibly associated with -.mall pyritiferous quartz veins. These veins or veinlets may be part of a system of northeasterly-trending structures prevalent in this art of the Wilderness. However, there is not sufficient evidence to prove that identified resources outside of the Wilderness extend into it in the Staubach Creek drainage, or that economic base- or precious-metal deposits are likely.

This supplement to the final report is a collection of interim and monthly reports and working memoranda prepared during the course of this program to document the progress, methods and results of the work. The supplement is divided into the self-contained sections briefly described below. I. SELECTED MONTHLY TECHNICAL LETTER REPORTS - This section is a collection of selected monthly technical letter reports that briefly summarizes the chronological development of the analyses and results, including the different concepts, theoretical approaches, and methods of data reduction and analysis explored, and the discoveries, insights and findings made along the way. More detailed treatments of the key developments and results are presented in the interim reports and working memoranda reproduced in subsequent sections of this supplementary report, and in the separately published final report. II. BACKGROUND THEORY FOR MEASUREMENT PROGRAM ON MEDIUM AND HIGH FREQUENCY RADIO TRANSMISSION IN COAL SEAMS - Working Memorandum - This working memorandum gives the initial background theory needed to guide the planned measurements and data analyses of this program to describe the propagation of radio waves-in coal seams for the frequency range of 50 to 5000 kHz. III. MODELLING AND DATA ANALYSIS OF IN-MINE ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVE PROPAGATION - Interim Report - This interim report presents detailed treatments of the data analysis and modelling techniques used, and the associated results obtained from conductor-free area propagation data measured by T. Cory in the first set of six coal mines. The mines were located in three highcoal seams; the Pittsburgh seam in northern West Virginia, the Pocahontas No. 3 seam in Virginia, and the Herrin No. 6 seam in Illinois. IV. ANALYSIS OF MF PROPAGATION DATA FROM MARGARET NO. 11, NANTY GLO, EHRENFELD, AND ADRIAN COAL MINES - Interim Report - This interim report presents detailed treatments of several improved data analysis and Modelling methods applied to, and results obtained from, conductor-free area propagation data measured by T. Cory in the second set of four coal mines. These mines were located in three low-coal seams; the Upper Freeport seam in Pennsylvania and West Virginia and the Lower Freeport and Lower Kittaning seams in Pennsylvania. In addition, this report contains a reprint of two papers presented at a Bureau of Mines sponsored EM Guided Waves in Mine Environments Workshop held in Boulder Colorado. One paper describes the three-layer theoretical model and its application to the conductor-free data from the first six mines, while the second paper describes the theory developed for the coupling of loop antennas to a cable in a mine tunnel in a coal seam, and the model's application to data in the vicinity of cables taken at the Margaret No. 11 mine. V. A METHOD FOR NONINTRUSIVE, IN-SITU MEASUREMENT OF COAL AND ROCK CONDUCTIVITIES IN A COAL MINE TUNNEL - Working Memorandum - This working memorandum briefly describes a possible direct method, and its potential advantages and shortcomings, for performing in-situ measurements of coal and rock conductivities. VI. MODELLING AND DATA ANALYSIS OF IN-MINE ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVE PROPAGATION FROM 50 to 5000 kHz - Interim Report - This interim report presents a summary comparison of theoretical and experimental results for conductor- free areas in eleven coal mines located in seven coal seams. It also summarizes the findings and their implications for intrinsically-safe, portable radio communications between roving miners.

Despite more than half a century of experience with roof bolting, no design method has received wide acceptance. To begin to improve this situation, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a statistical study of roof bolt performance at a number of mines throughout the U.S. Case histories were collected from 37 mines with a variety of roof bolt types and patterns in a wide range of geologic environments. Performance was measured in terms of the number of roof falls that occurred per10,000 ft of drivage. The study found that roof falls are rare when the roof is strong and the stress is low, even with light roof bolting patterns. The focus of this paper is on the more difficult conditions, where the roof is weaker and/or the stress is higher. Analysis of the results led to guidelines that can be used to make preliminary estimates of the required bolt length, capacity, and pattern. The guidelines are based on the depth of cover (which correlates with stress) and the roof quality (measured by the Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR), and the intersection span. Another contribution is a formula for estimating the horizontal stress level in the eastern U.S. coalfields as a function of the depth of cover. The design guidelines are currently being implemented into a computer program called Analysis of Roof Bolt Systems (ARBS).
