The project investigated regional impacts of mining on the ground water system of the Powder River Basin by: 1) establishment of a regional ground water monitoring network. and 2)development at a set pit digital computer models to simulate ground water flow and quality, ground water contributions to surface water flow and quality (i.e., baseflow), and watershed run-off and recharge. Over 100 wells were monitored for physical and chemical parameters. Data were used as input to the models and for the development of a comprehensive data base. The basin was modeled on a regional and subregional scale using a finite -difference model employing an alternating difference technique. Two water-shed models were evaluated fur their ability to provide runoff and recharge inputs to the basic ground water model. Application of the regional and subregional models using conservative mining scenarios showed that drawdowns may extend west from the mines as far as ten miles but that impacts would be insignificant on a regional scale. The watershed model could be effectively applied to small watersheds only.

This report, authorized under Contract Number H0220065, Amendment Number Six, documents the results of an investigation of lighting system modifications and designs for working place illumination in high and low coal entries of underground coal mines. The portable and machine mounted system designs, both modified and prototype, represent a continuation of work performed under Contract Number H0111403, Amendment Number One. See the Final Technical Report dated May 26, 1972 for detailed information concerning this prior Contract. All modified and prototype systems met the performance requirements of Bureau of Mines Specification 2G, as proved by test. In addition, the systems met the requirement for illumination, as specified in the Contract and in the proposed standards which were generated in response to Public Law 91-173.

Diesel particulate matter (D PM) samples from underground metal/nonmetal mines are collected on quartz fiber filters and measured for carbon content using National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health Method 5040. If size-selective samplers are not used to collect D PM in the presence of car-bonaceous ore dust, both the ore dust and D PM will collect on the quartz filters, causing the carbon attributed to D PM to be artificially high. Because the D PM particle size is much smaller than that of mechanically generated mine dust aerosols, it can be separated from the larger mine dust aerosol by a single-stageimpacto1: The SKC D PM cassette is a single-stage impactor designed to collect only D PM aerosols in the presence of carbonaceous mine ore aerosols, which are commonly found in underground nonmetal mines. Howeve1: there is limited data on how efficiently the SKC D PM cassette can collect D PM in the presence of ore dust. In this study we investigated the ability of the SKC D PM cassette to collect D PM while segregating ore dust from the sample. We found that the SKC D PM cassette accurately collected D PM. In the presence of carbon-based ore aerosols having an average concentration of 8 mg/m3, no ore dust was detected on SKC D PM cassette filters. We did discover a problem: the surface areas of the D PM deposition SKC D PM cassettes, manufactured prior to August 2002were inconsistent. To correct this problem, SKC modified the cassette. The new cassette produced, with 99% confidence, a range of D PM deposit areas between 8.05 and 8.28 cm2, a difference of less than 3%.

Introduction Industrial exposure to whole-body vibration is associated with injury and discomfort. Certain industries, notably mining, construction, and forestry, involve complex 6 degrees of freedom vibration. Laboratory-based studies of vibration are essential for controlled and systematic evaluation of the human responses to vibration2. The purpose of this pilot study was to evaluate whether the duration of the vibration exposure, and rest between vibrations, significantly influence the subjective ratings of comfort during laboratory-based studies of vibration. Methods Subjects: The cumulative vibration dose was calculated, and was below the health guidance caution zone recommended by International standards3. The experimental procedures were approved by the University of Guelph Research Ethics Board. Ten adult subjects participated in this pilot experiment. All subjects completed the entire experimental paradigm; no subjects complained of pain during or after the experiment. Experimental Design: The experiment consisted of four blocks of vibration exposures; either 15 or 20 seconds of vibration (1 df:Z axis, 3 df:XY plane, 3df:YZ plane, or 6 df) alternating with either 5 or 10 seconds rest. The order of presentation of the four blocks was randomized. Each of the blocks was composed of 37 individual sinusoidal vibration exposures in randomized sequence. This abstract focused on ten identical trials, (6.3 Hz vertical vibration, 0.55 m/s2 RMS) interspersed within each block, in order to assess whether the subjects’ comfort ratings systematically varied between the 15 or 20 vibration exposures, the 5 or 10 second rest between vibrations, or within each block. The experiment involved 43 minutes of vibration within the 62 minute experiment. Vibration Apparatus: A commercial parallel robotic platform was used to apply the specific vibration exposures (R2000, Parallel Robotics Systems Corporation, Hampton, New Hampshire). The subjects sat on a passenger seat from a 1992 Honda Accord that was rigidly mounted to the robotic platform (Figure 1). This robotic system performed the specific vibration exposures operating under closed-loop displacement control. A custom-written Matlab program automated the testing sequence.

Several types of inflatable stoppings, developed under Bureau of Mines contract for use as mine air barriers during underground production, have been tested by the Bureau. All of the stoppings tested showed significant internal leakage initially but, in all but one stopping, the leaks were sealed with limited effort The stoppings were tested underground in two western noncoal mines under production conditions. The results from the Colorado molybdenum mine showed the stoppings to be generally unsatisfactory for daily mine usage if they are deployed near blasting areas or in locations where near-perfect air seals are required. They were very susceptible to blast damage and seldom were better than 90 percent efficient as air barriers. However, stoppings tested in the New Mexico uranium mine were located substantially distant from any blasting. Because slight leakage past the stoppings was acceptable, they proved very satisfactory in that application.

The original work statement of this contract was entitles: 'A Accident Analysis Model for Use in Underground Coal Mines.' The contract was scheduled for a duration of 26 months and was to be in three phases: Phase I - Model Development, Phase II - Application of the Model, and Phase III - Installation, Monitoring and Evaluation of the Model. Alter three months in Phase I, it became apparent that much of the needed data for the model was nut available and could not be made available within the original study schedule. Proceeding as plumed would have resulted in a model of limited utility. Personnel from Theodore Barry and Associates and the Bureau discussed the problem in detail and mutually decided to utilize the majority of remaining funds to assist the Bureau in solving these data problems and develop a stronger ongoing capability for safety analysis within the Bureau. Both tie contractor and the bureau officials involved believed that this decision greatly enhanced the Bureau's ability to develop future accident prediction models, whose rigor would greatly exceed what was currently possible.

This regional report covers 1993 mining and related activity in approximately 40 countries and territories of Canada, Latin America, and the Caribbean Basin. These countries of the Western Hemisphere, as with the United States, are endowed with a great variety of minerals, including metals, industrial minerals, and energy minerals. For most of these countries, such mineral production helps form foundations for their economies and earns export credits including hard currencies. Table 1 depicts an overall view of Latin America and Canada's production of its major mineral commodities in 1993; subsequent tables show the role of Latin America and Canada in world mineral production, trade, and import dependency on minerals from Latin America and Canada by the United States. Overall, the picture emerges of a rich mineral diversity throughout the hemisphere, attracting increasing interest and investment, and complementing the mineral resources of the United States.

Dust surveys were conducted around small truck-mounted rock drills operating at surface coal mines to assess their airborne respirable dust generation and in-service dust control methods. Of four out of seven drills sampled, respirable dust concentrations measured around the drill deck ranged from 8.68 to 95.15 mg/m with3concentrations ranging from 1.37 to 2.69 mg/m at distances 12.2 to 30.5 m downwind of these drills. The other3drills had noticeably lower respirable dust concentrations measured around the drill deck at or below 1.30 mg/m.3Rotoclone-type dry dust collectors were commonly used with dust being emitted from around the drill deck shroud, collector exhaust, and collector fines dumping. Wind speed and direction was also a factor in the dust concentrations measured on the bench. Dust control modifications were made to three rock drills to reduce their airborne dust emissions. Dust controls tested included water injection into the Rotoclone exhaust, Rotoclone exhaust extension, improved sealing of drilling deck shroud, shrouding the Rotoclone hopper dump process, and wet drilling. These control techniques showed noticeable improvement in dust concentrations measured around the drills. Finally, repositioning the drill operator showed that operator dust exposure can be improved by avoiding the dust cloud around the drill.

The evaporation of crude oil without doubt causes one of the largest single losses to which the oil is subjected after it is taken from the ground. The few days during which crude oil is stored on the lease before being taken by the pipe line, causes an aggregate loss per year from evaporation estimated at 122,100,000 gallons of gasoline in the Mid-Continent field alone. This has a value, at 22 cents per gallon, of $26,880,000 and represents about 3 per cent of the total gasoline produced in the United States from all fields and all sources. "There seems to be some confusion between the terms carbon black and lamp black, although in American lampblack is generally understood to be a soot formed by the smudge process. In this process oil, coal tar, resin or some solid, or carbonaceous substance is burned in an insufficient quantity of air, while on the other hand carbon black is a product resulting from the incomplete combustion of gas and is deposited by actual contact of flame upon a metallic surface.The various carbons, such as gas retort coke, oil retort coke, graphite, carbon black, lampblack, vine black, wood-pulp,black, willow charcoal, and blacks made from refuse material such as leather have different characteristics as to flocculence strength of color, and physical structure. These blacks are made by one of the following methods:(1) Formation by direct contact of a flame upon a depositing surface.(2) Production by combustion of an oil, tar, etc., in an inadequate supply of air; the soot is allowed to slowly settle out on the floors and the walls of the collecting chambers.(3) Carbonization of solids and subsequent reduction to a state of small subdivision.(4) Production by heating carbonaceous vapors or gases to a decomposition temperature by external heating with or without air in the forming chamber. This is usually referred to as cracking or thermal decomposition."

The vibration and impact environment for crew members on locomotives has been investigated in a series of studies conducted by Exponent Failure Analysis Associates (Exponent) beginning in 1990. Locomotive cab vibration and impact levels were measured on a variety of locomotive models operating over many different track sections across the Union Pacific, Burlington Northern Santa Fe, CSX, Norfolk Southern, and CONRAIL systems. The comfort and health implications of exposure to the measured locomotive vibration levels were evaluated by comparison with the human vibration exposure boundaries given in the International Standards Organization (ISO) standard 2631-1:1997, the British Standard 6841:1987, European Union (EU) Directive 2002/44/EC, measurements made by Exponent on various commercial and recreational vehicles, and vibration exposure measurement data found in the literature. Methods Initially, vibration levels experienced by locomotive crews were measured and recorded at incremental speeds covering the range of normal train operation. In 2003, a method of measuring the vibration exposure continuously by means of a digital recorder was developed, allowing the vibration level over the entire run or crew shift to be analyzed. For each seating location measured, acceleration was recorded on the seat surface beneath the ischial tuberosities (pelvis) of the seated crew member and on the cab floor directly under the seat. At each of the locations, triaxial accelerometers were used to measure the vibration along the longitudinal, lateral, and vertical axes. Since the vibration environment varies throughout the route, and locomotive vibration levels have been found to be primarily speed dependent, a speed sensor was used to continuously measure the speed of the train. To evaluate the recorded vibrations levels, the data was divided into two-minute segments, which were each processed per the 1997 ISO standard for weighted RMS vibration levels and Vibration Dose Values (VDV). Additionally, PSDs and 1/3 Octave RMS values were calculated to determine the frequency content of the vibration. For each two-minute segment, the average speed of the locomotive was calculated to allow for correlation with the recorded vibration exposure values. The resulting exposure values for the entire run were calculated by combining the data from all of the two-minute segments. Since introducing the continuous method of recording acceleration, 23 seating locations have been recorded on 11 locomotives traveling 11 different routes across various parts of the United States. One of the routes was a shift of ‘yard work’, traveling back and forth in a rail yard coupling train cars together. Fluorine-containing polymers are comparatively new materials that exhibit very desirable characteristics not usually found in non-fluorine containing polymers. Among these characteristics are heat and flame resistance, desirable electrical properties, and chemical inertness. Polytetrafluoroethylene and polymonochlorotrifluoroethylene are examples of such polymers commercially available. In practical applications it is reasonable to expect thermal position of these materials if they are subject to high enough temperatures. The temperatures at which thermal decomposition takes place and the nature of the gaseous products of decomposition are considered pertinent data in intelligent use of these materials. The purpose of the tests discussed herein was to determine: (1) The temperatures at which gases were produced when small specimens of the two polymers were located and (2) determine the identity of the major constituents of gaseous products.

A performance comparison of 14 rescue breathing apparatus was undertaken as an assessment of past and present worldwide technology. Rescue breathing apparatus are self-contained, closed-circuit breathing apparatus used for entry into areas having atmospheres that are immediately dangerous to life and health. Apparatus tested were the Biomarine BioPak 45, 60, and 240; the Draeger BG 4 and BG-174A; the Litton LITPAC II; the MSA Custom 4500 II Air Mask, Chemox, and McCaa; the Sabre Selected Elevated Flow Apparatus (SEFA); the Scott Rescue-Pak; the Siebe Gorman Aerorlox and Proto Ten; and the SurvivairLP-120. The apparatus were tested on an automated breathing and metabolic simulator at the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Physiological parameters monitored during the testing were average inhaled CO2 and O2, minimum inhaled CO2, inhaled wet-and dry-bulb temperatures, and peak inhalation and exhalation breathing pressures. The metabolic demand on the apparatus was 1.35 L O2/min for most of the test with two 5-min intervals of 2.5 L O2/min, the first beginning 10 min into the test and the second beginning 10 min before the end of the rated duration of the apparatus. Results presented include apparatus service life and test-averages of monitored physiological parameters. Schematic drawings and photographs of the apparatus are also included. The Draeger BG-174A and BG 4 had the highest durations—295 and 291 min, respectively. The BG 4 hadthe lowest minimum inhaled CO2 levels, attesting to the effectiveness of its CO2-absorbent canister. The SabreSEFA had the lowest average inhaled CO2 levels, due mostly to the apparently low-dead-space mask andnose cup. The MSA Air Mask, the only open-circuit device tested, had the lowest wet- and dry-bulb temperatures, with the liquid-O2-source Siebe Gorman Aerorlox having the next lowest temperatures. The only apparatus with a CO2-absorbent not in a packed-bed design, the BG-174A, had the lowest exhalation pressures. The BG 4 had the highest level of positive pressure, with the Biomarine BioPak 60, Survivair LP-120, SEFA, and Litton LITPAC II nearly as high. The BG 4 had the lowest pressure swing, with the SEFA a close second.

Increased awareness of a healthy work environment is common to all industries and the stone industry is no exception. The presence of operating diesel equipment, welding, stone production blasting, and silica dust in a working environment all contribute to air quality issues in underground stone mines. Particularly recognized is the exposure of workers to diesel particulate matter (DPM). Recent regulations call for a DPM standard of 160TC ug/m3 (TC = Total Carbon). The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted research to improve the ventilation of these mines and consequently reduce the exposure of workers to harmful airborne contaminants. The results have shown that the ventilation of underground stone mines can be significantly enhanced using improved ventilation controls and techniques. Large-opening stone mines present specialized ventilation challenges because their entries are much larger than in other types of mines. Most stone mines have entries about 40 feet wide and up to 30 feet high, with bench areas that may extend even higher. These large entries present the positive opportunity to move large air quantities at relatively low mine fan pressures resulting in lower fan horsepower and reduced operating costs. However, the difficulty in ventilating large-opening mines is that even with large air volumes, the air velocity is often less than 100 feet/minute. Higher ventilation velocities more quickly dilute and remove contaminants from the face areas. Higher ventilation airflow velocities can be achieved by effective ventilation planning and proper choice of ventilation fans.

Coal mining in Indiana is limited to the south-western portion of the state, with coal currently being recovered in 19 counties. The coal-producing area of the state covers approximately 6,500 square miles. Although most of the coal in Indiana is recovered by surface mining methods, a small percentage is recovered through underground mining. To date, 40 percent of the known coal reserves have been removed. Indiana has about 33 billion tons of identified coal reserves, of which approximately 17 billion tons are recoverable using current technology. Of this recoverable coal, about 15 billion tons are recoverable by underground mining and 2 billion tons are recoverable by surface mining methods. The State of Indiana has regulated the environmental impacts of coal mining since 1941. Indiana was the second state in the nation to pass legislation requiring mined land reclamation. Its SMCRA regulatory program was approved July 29,1982, and its Abandoned Mine Land Program was approved July 29, 1982.

A general description of the activities and results of bauxite investi-gation by the Bureau of Mines at its bauxite project in Saline and Pulaski Counties, Ark., has been given in Report of Investigations 4251. The factual data obtained during the project are reported in a series of Reports of Investigation beginning with No. 4251, of which this is the sixteenth. The data are accompanied by maps showing the location of holes drilled and the deposits developed. Each area upon which work was done is reported by half townships. Each bauxite deposit investigated was assigned a name and a number for ready reference and identification, and its location and name are shown on the appropriate half-township map. The description of each half township is followed by a description of each deposit developed in that half township. The 14 half-township maps and 77 detail maps of the bauxite deposits in this series of reports give the locations and numbers of all the holes drilled on the project, except the deep holes drilled to test the geophysical anomalies. The locations of the latter holes show on figure 13 in volume 1. The descriptions of the deposits developed are followed by complete detailed logs of the drill holes. Many of the widely spaced exploratory holes did not discover bauxite of minable thickness and grade. The pertinent information obtained from the widely spaced exploratory drill holes has been summarized and tabulated, and a table for each half township is given with the discussion covering that area.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted research to develop an accurate, real-time, position monitoring and warning system for the vehicles used in surface mining. The product of this research will be technology to reduce accidents and injuries associated with the operation of surface mining haulage equipment. The position monitoring system should reduce accidents related to vehicle position and also increase the efficiency of haulage operations. This research was conducted in preparation for development of an accurate, real-time position monitoring and warning system, which notifies equipment operators when they deviate from a known safe course and are approaching a fixed hazard. A radar positioning system designed for marine applications was evaluated and a series of tests was run to determine the accuracy of the radar positioning system when used in a land vehicle. The radar position determination was compared to surveyed values. Both static and dynamic (moving vehicle) tests were conducted. The static test results were marginal and the dynamic test results were not accurate enough for the position monitoring and warning system. Although a promising technology, the system tested needs to be modified to meet the accuracy requirements of mobile mine equipment.

Real economic growth for 1988 may fall short of the 3.3% projected by the U.S. Department of Commerce in August 1988 be-cause the summer drought and intense heat in many areas curtailed output more severely than expected. The economy grew at an average annual rate of 3.0% for the first three quarters of the year, slowing in the second and third quarters. Export growth, which occurred even as the dollar edged up com-pared with other industrial country currencies, was an important factor in the expansion. Notable gains were posted in sales of machinery, computers, aircraft, chemicals, and telecommunications equipment. Imports increased, but not as much as exports, and the U.S. trade position was still much improved from that of 1987. Personal consumption expenditures grew slightly faster than the economy as a whole. Purchases of consumer durables showed notable strength in the first half of 1988, but slowed down in the third quarter. [ ] Despite the moderate rise in interest rates, business spending for new plant and equipment also rose and contributed to 1988 gross national product (GNP) growth. Both new business investment and export demand spurred orders for U.S.-made machine tools. Orders for machine tools for the first 8 months of 1988 were almost triple those for the corresponding period in 1987.

Information regarding the pores or voids in reservoir rocks is vitally important in the scientific extraction of petroleum from natural underground reservoirs, and petroleum technologists concerned, with subsurface, conditions have devised various methods that give reasonably accurate information as to the porosities of oil and gas-bearing sands.5/ In this, work, several investigators have made use of the experience of the ceramic and other industries. The method of determining the effective porosity of oil sands described in this report falls within the general classification of gas-expansion methods. It was devised and developed at the United States Bureau of Mines Petroleum Experiment Station, Bartlesville, Okla., as a part of the research dealing with fluid and energy relations in reservoirs and improved oil-recovery methods. The apparatus and procedure are well adapted to the requirements of the Bureau, and the following detailed description has been prepared so that others may make use of the information. A tabulation at the end of the report gives the results of several hundred porosity determinations for oil sands in fields of 11 States.
