The authors have proposed and discussed storage of low temperature materials such as LNG, LPG and frozen food in rock caverns. In this case, as the rock mass around the caverns will receive effects of low temperature, it is necessary to consider the thermal behavior and the stability of caverns. In this study, strength and deformation characteristics obtained by the uniaxial tension test and the compression test at low temperatures were discussed. Using the results, temperature and stress distribution around caverns when LNG was stored, were analyzed. Then thermal behavior of the rock mass around caverns was discussed. Die Autoren haben Lagerung von Niedertemperatur-Materialien wie LNG, LPG und tiefgefrorenen Nahrungsmitteln in Felskavernen vorgeschlagen und diskutiert. Da in diesem Fall die Felsmasse um die Kavernen den Effekten der niedrigen Temperatur ausgesetzt ist, ist es erforderlich, das Thermalverhalten und die Stabilität der Kavernen zu berücksichtigen. In dieser Untersuchung wurden Stärke-und Deformationseigenschaften, die durch ein-axialen Spannungstest und Kompressionstest bei niedrigen Temperaturen erhalten wurden, diskutiert. Mit diesen Ergebnissen wurden Temperatur- und Stressverteilung um die Kavernen bei Lagerung von LNG analysiert. Dann wurde das Thermalverhalten der Felsmasse in der Umgebung der Kavernen diskutiert. En se servant des résultats, ils analysent la répartition de la température et des pressions autour des cavités, lors du stockage de GNL. Ils discutent ensuite le comportement thermique de la masse rocheuse autour des cavités.

The aim of this study was to develop an in-house tensile testing procedure that would yield accurate and reproducible parameters as input material properties into computational models for numerical simulations of the mechanical behaviour of TM380 mild steel. To achieve this objective, we reviewed the ISO 6892:2009 tensile testing standard along with reported good practice guidelines. Tensile tests were conducted on a dog-bone shaped TM380 mild steel specimen with strain gauges attached on either side, to monitor alignment and measure strain, using three different types of tensile testing machines. Parameters quantified included yield stress, ultimate tensile strength, and modulus of elasticity. The values of these parameters were found to be in agreement with the values supplied by the manufacturer's specification and showed minimal variations between laboratories. Thus it can be concluded that the tensile test procedure used resulted in accurate and reproducible results. The strain values calculated as per standard were in disagreement with those determined from extensometer and strain gauges and resulted in lower elastic modulus values. This confirms that the current testing procedures require the use of long-range strain gauges or extensometer to determine the strain. A chemical analysis was conducted to verify the specification by the manufacturer. The specimen was found to be fairly homogeneous with minor sulphide inclusions. The micrographs reveal a pearlite and ferrite structure typical of mild steel, and the fractographs show a dimpled surface typical of ductile fracture, which is an attribute of mild steel.

The SMR geomechanics classification system (adaptation of RMR for slopes) is reviewed with data from 87 actual slopes in Valencia. In a research project, SMR has been applied by a GIS system, as a method to forecast stability problems in future road construction. As a result of this work a methodology for GIS application has been developed. On revient sur la classification geomechanique SMR ( une adaptation du RMR pour talus et pentes) avec les dates de 87 talus existant autour de Valencia. Dans le cadre d’un projet de recherche SMR a été appliquée, avec un système GIS, comme méthode de prévision de stabilité problèmes dans la construction de futures routes. Une méthodologie pour l’application du GIS a été développe. Das Geomechanische Einteilungssystem SMR (eine Anpassung des RMR an Böschungen) wird an Hand der Daten von 87 Böschungen im Gebiet von Valencia überdacht. In einem Forschungsprojekt wurde das SMR in einem Geographischen Informationssystem (GIS) als Methode zur Vorhersage von Stabilitätsproblemen bei zukünftigen Straßenbauprojekten eingesetzt. A new approach to the -study of human factors in stope productivity by A. C. LAWRENCE B. Econ., D. Com. (S.A.) (Member) The extent of the improvement in mean performance which could be achieved by reducing the variance between stoping gangs is examined, and it is shown that a worthwhile gain would result if variance were reduced by as little as 5 to 15 per cent. The problem of identifying human factors which contributed towards variance in gang performance was examined in one gold mine. A total of 342 'observations' on 49 stoping gangs were gathered, each observation consisting of a set of figures for 36 variables for one gang for one week. The variables included 'stope factors' such as face length, 'gang factors' such as the ethnic composition of the gang, and 'supervisory factors' such as the experience of the miner. These variables were related to 'tons trammed per week' as a measure of work performance. The findings showed that certain of the predictor variables accounted for 66 per cent of the variance in gang performance and about two thirds of this could be attributed to gang and supervisory factors, that is to the 'human factors'. The method suggests a basis for a new approach to the identification of human factors and is a promising step towards optimizing gang performance.

Fluorination of magnetite (Fe₃O₄) by NH₄HF₂ was investigated using simultaneous thermogravimetry and differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), and observing the morphology and phase changes using scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) and X-ray diffractometry (XRD). The results indicate that fluorination with the involvement of oxygen begins at room temperature, peaks at 178.40C, and is completed at 2000C with the formation of only (NH₄)₃FeF₆. On heating, (NH₄)₃FeF₆ gradually releases NH₄F by the formation of NH₄FeF₄ at 2590C, then (NH₄)0.18FeF₃ at 3270C, and finally FeF₃ with minor FeF₂ at 4000C due to the partial reduction of Fe (III) to Fe (II). At 5500C, FeF₃ is oxidized to FeOF/Fe₂O₃.

The paper deals with the importance of design, and of codes of practice, in ensuring safe working conditions in mines. The design principles involved in the design process are dealt with, and the importance of a logical design process is emphasized. The links between the requirements for developing a code of practice, embodied in the existing guidelines for the preparation of such a code, and the design principles and process are considered in some detail. Finally, suggestions are included which may provide improvements to the code and hence, ultimately, lead to further improvement in safe working conditions.

The essence of the method consists in creation of drop of opposite sign at the isolating stoppings, by which air losses through the accident district change direction of their motion. The period of reversal is selected in that way so that air may not find itself in the zone of burning. The method of fighting the fire considered was repeatedly used in the coal mines of the Ukraine. The theoretical basis of efficiency and two examples of use of this method by fighting the underground fires are adduced in the paper.

"Portions of the Icy Cape placer Au district have been described and exploited since the early 1900s. Industrial studies of Au-bearing garnetrich intervals established a 3.5 million troy ounce resource in the western half of the district. This estimate is not compliant with CIM and SME definition standards for Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves. We note high variability in the textures of sediments and their heavy mineral (HM) content and composition in the district, probably as a function of the depositional environment. Sediments are medium- to fine-grained sands with a valuable HM assemblage that averages 26.0% in a range of 1.1– 72.6%. Valuable heavy minerals (VHMs) garnet, magnetite, ilmenite, rutile, and zircon, but excluding Au, average 7.9% in a range of 1.0–37.6% of the HM assemblage. Trace quantities of uraninite, thorite, monazite, xenotime, and others are noted. Garnets have an average Y content of 726 ppm with a range of 0–2150 ppm. Energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence confirms compositions commensurate with Ca, Al, and Mg silicates. We provide empirical analytical data and note high variability in the textures, HM content, and compositions as a probable function of depositional environment. Icy Cape District land and resources are owned by the Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority and managed by the Trust Land Office (TLO). After 1990, a great process of re-organisation and economic reform has occurred in the Romanian mining sector and especially in the pitcoal mining in the Jiu Valley. This process has included both legislation and the main aspects for getting an economic efficiency in the environment issues and for dealing the problems with social impact. Accordingly, starting with the year 1993 a new mining method has been introduced to turn efficient the pitcoal mining, and we speak about mining with caved in bed. This method has two variants: - with transverse strips and caved in bed; - with long face and caved in bed. Each of the above-mentioned variants has in turn several subdivisions, depending on how the longwall is prepared and on other characteristics. By using this method, the output has increased compared to other mining methods. The main safety aspects concerning caved in mining refer to: - great emissions of methane; - technical aspects (a mining method system, supports, discharging process); - pressure driving (analysed for the case of mining with long face, with transverse strips as well for the case of transverse strips when mining a subsequent sublevel).

We show that the prioritization of business improvement and performance management decisions may be significantly improved by taking into account the systemic effects of changes made in a single process area. To do so we build a model of a mining value chain, taking into account consequential downtime that arises from downstream and upstream starvation and choking effects of each activity. Introducing the concept of internal capacity, this approach yields insight into the relative importance of key metrics such as loading and hauling rates. We suggest that a holistic view of this type should be a core component of business improvement and performance management decisions.

INTRODUCTION This paper was originally presented at the Platinum Adding Value Conference, held at Sun City from the 4th to 6th October 2004. Narrow reef mining may not be applicable to the base metal operations in Zambia, however, it is considered that the methodology used is equally appropriate to the development of technology and mining methods in mining environments other than narrow reef mining. The purpose of this paper is to explore the integration of technology and stoping systems. For the last hundred years the South African narrow reef mining industry has battled to control working costs in a labour intensive industry. It is only through the application of appropriate technology that change will occur. Stoping systems, because it is the stoping method and methodology that is at the heart of the mining system. Introduce a different technology that results in a more efficient stoping system and the mining system will look after itself. The technology applied to stoping in narrow reef mining, over the last 100 years, can be categorised as follows: ? The introduction of pneumatic rockdrills early this century. The cumbersome rig mounted units being replaced by smaller, lighter, hand held units that were then made easier to use with the addition of an air leg. (The so called Swedish method of mining.) As late as the early 1970s some drilling was still being carried out without the assistance of an air leg. ? Scraper winches to replace gravity and shovels to move rock both in the face and the gullies were first introduced in the late 1920s. ? Hydraulic props installed close to the face and capable of applying force against the hangingwall as well as yielding in a controlled manner under dynamic load arrived in the 1960s. In many instances these have now been replaced by yielding elongates fitted with water hydraulic tensioning devices. ? Some people argue that the introduction of tungsten carbide inserts, to improve drilling, was equally important.

This paper focusses on the identification of operational opportunities in a 1100 tph pellet plant to reduce the specific energy consumption in its comminution circuit, which is designed to process magnetite ore and produce pellets to be used as raw material in the iron and steel industry. The assessment is carried out through a frequency analysis for three of the four processing lines of the plant, consisting of one ball mill each with an installed power of 4.5 MW and 280 tph of mill throughput design capacity. The methodology, as described in this paper, facilitates the visualisation and quantification of plant performance and provides a good first approach to prioritise alternatives for optimisation. In a pellet plant, grinding is a critical stage due to its high energy consumption and its major impact on the physical properties of the iron pellets, which quality depends to a large extent on grind size and Blaine index. From the evaluation that was performed it can be concluded that production line 2 has the lowest specific energy consumption of 15.1 kWh/t, while line 1 has the highest with an average of 16.6 kWh/t for the same type of ore. On the basis of the results and current operational practices, it is recommended to increase the average mill throughput from 240 tph to 265 tph, translating into specific energy reduction of 10%, without affecting the chemical and physical properties of the final product. The implementation of an HPGR for regrinding the magnetic concentrate is proposed to assure adequate specific surface area in case grinding coarser becomes an alternative, which would also be beneficial for the subsequent water recovery stages. Anisotropy is a characteristic of intact foliated metamorphic rocks (slates, gneisses, phyllites, schists). ?esting was used to establish the anisotropic behaviour of selected gneissic rocks. The effect of anisotropy on various mechanical properties (strength, deformation) and dynamic properties (wave velocity) was examined. The rock samples were also tested at successively higher confining pressures in order to evaluate the effect of anisotropic behaviour at high overburden pressures. L’ anisotropie characterise les roches foliées (schistes, gneiss, phyllades). Dans ce travail des essais en laboratoire ont été exécutés afin de déterminer le comportement anisotropique des roches gneissiques. L’ effet de l’anisotropie a été examiné par rapport aux propriétés méchaniques (résistance, deformation) et propriétés dynamiques (vélocité ultrasonique). En outre des essais des roches ont été exécutés a des compressions latérales successivement plus grandes afin de déterminer le comportement des roches sous grands charges. Anisotropie ist eine Eigenschaft der geschieferten Gesteine (TonSchiefer, Gneis, Phyllit, Marmor). Versuche wurden durchgeführt, um anisotrope Verhalten von gneis Gesteinen zu ermitteln. Der Einfluss von Anisotropie auf mechanische (Festigkeit, Dehnung) und dynamische Eigenschaften (Wellegeschwindigkeit) wurde bestimmt. Die Dreiaxialversuche wurden unter grossem allseitigen Drücken entnommen, um das anisotrope Verhalten auf grösse herrschende Spannung zu bestimmen.

Expert Online, as a software system, is aimed at providing plant operators in the minerals industry with effective training and on-the-job assistance. It incorporates a number of features to achieve this goal, of which the most important is its ability to explain the dynamics of the plant and control system in simple language, mimicking an informed plant expert who has online access to the inner workings of the plant and control system. This is made possible by a novel form of Artificial Intelligence, called the Interpreting Expert System. Previous implementations of the IES were only capable of explaining controller actions. Expert Online will extend this capability to also perform the more difficult task of explaining process behaviour. Expert Online will implement three main processes, namely the accumulation of data from the controllers and plant models, the interpretation, processing and filtering of that data and lastly communicating the relevant information to the user, both as written messages and in other audio-visual forms. Although Expert Online is aimed at the operator, other plant personnel, like supervisors and plant managers, will also benefit from it. This paper focuses on the structural and functional design of Expert Online for implementation on the latest version of Mintek’s open control platform, PlantStar, highlighting advances and additions since the previous implementations of the Interpreting Expert System and concluding with an example illustrating some of the principles.

In a paper presented at the Heavy Minerals Conference 2001 a laboratory scale investigation on the beneficiation of an ilmenite containing waste stream by magnetizing roasting was reported1.This waste stream contained a high concentration of ilmenite, which was contaminated by chromite and other gangue minerals. Interpretation of the results of the investigation was based on the assumption that during magnetizing roasting of an ilmenite concentrate, under the oxidizing conditions, the magnetic properties of the chromite would remain constant. In this article thefollowing hypothesis was tested: The magnetic susceptibility of chromite would remain constant during magnetizing roasting of an ilmenite concentrate under the oxidizing conditions reported by Gouws and Van Dyk1. The results of this study indicated that the hypothesis is not true. The increase in the magnetic susceptibility is not significant though and it is expected that it will not influence the final ilmenite quality to a large extent. Based on the assumptions that the bulk magnetic susceptibility of the waste stream samples represents that of the ilmenite in the waste stream, and the bulk magnetic susceptibility of UG1 chromite that of the of chromite in the waste stream, the results also served to confirm that the waste stream with a high chromite content should be roasted under oxidizing conditions, in a reactor with a well-defined retention time distribution (i.e. a fluidized bed reactor), at a roasting temperature of 750°C (rather than the higher temperature ranges of 800°C and 850°C).

In 1991 the Government of the Republic of Zambia passed legislation providing for the privatisation of Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines Limited (ZCCM). The newly formed Mining Companies, established after nearly a decade of difficult and protracted negotiations on such matters as, cash at close; retained percentage interest by ZCCM; equity investment; future investment commitment and tax concessions, were faced with great internal challenges and a harsh external environment. There was a convergence of a number of negative forces that had and will continue to have an impact on the mining environment in Zambia. The most crucial of these being, the competitive pressures of the global economy, fluctuating copper price and the prevailing HIV/AIDS pandemic. In the short period after privatisation, the Industry has seen the collapse of Binani Industries (Luanshya Mine), the withdrawal of Anglo America Corporation from Konkola Copper Mines Plc and the disposal of Chambishi Cobalt and Acid Plants by Anglovaal Mining Ltd. The objective of this paper is to provide a theoretical and practically researched foundation, which may be used to assist Zambian Mining Companies in making informed decisions on the issue of Strategic Outsourcing and the degree to which this may support the successful and sustainable growth of the Zambian Copper Mining Industry. If judiciously implemented, Strategic Outsourcing has the potential to generate a practical business valuation and process to assist Mine Management in the achievement of their business goals and consequently the return on investment to their Shareholders.

The metallurgical response of a difficult to treat coal and an easy to treat coal orebody were investigated in terms of the coal yield and the coal quality in a basic coal recovery flowsheet. The purpose of this paper is to show trends and derive principles for the treatment of different coal types. This investigation entailed using the LIMN simulator to simulate the metallurgical response by varying the plant operational parameters.
