Primary roof support represents the first line of defence against rockrelated falls of ground in underground mines, and improper utilization or misunderstanding of the applicability and behaviour of primary support can be costly from a safety standpoint. This is a major concern for underground mines, as roof support is the single most costly expense from a mining operational perspective. This is further backed by the evidence that, in the USA, hundreds of injuries and fatalities still occur each year because of rib, roof, and massive roof falls. Additionally, the fully-grouted passive rebar, fully-grouted tension rebar, and resin-assisted mechanical anchor bolts, which constitute a large portion (89%) of the 68 million bolts installed each year in underground mines in the USA can vary in cost quite dramatically. To mitigate this concern a study was conducted in 2010 by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health, in conjunction with Southern Illinois University of Carbondale, to assess the performance of primary roofbolts in underground coal mines for improved safety and cost. This was accomplished using underground roofbolt monitoring solutions, field data, and numerical modelling to better understand the quasi-static behaviour of underground coal mine roofs and the response behaviour of the bolts. In particular, over 170 instrumented extensometers, closure meters, shear meters, fully-grouted passive rebar, fully-grouted tension rebar, and resin-assisted mechanical roofbolts were installed at three coal mines across the USA. Of these three mines, two used the room and pillar extraction method and the other used the longwall extraction method. There was no evidence to indicate a difference in performance of the active primary roofbolts compared with the passive primary roofbolts. Additionally, in the initial loading phase, the active bolts showed no difference in loading, indicating that tension bleed-off is of more of a concern than originally thought. Lastly, for the initial computer modelling studies, challenges still remain in obtaining a good match to the in situ bolt measurements and replicating the discontinuous roof rock and in situ bolt behaviour over time.

Flumes are ubiquitous throughout the mining and minerals processing industries as well as being used in the polymer processing and pulp and paper industries. With the increased demand for the transport of highly concentrated slurries in rectangular open channels, there is an impetus for a better understanding of the role of rheology in flow hydraulics. Until recently, design of such channels has been based on either the Chézy or Manning equations used for modelling open channel flow of Newtonian fluids. This has been done for modelling turbulent flow of low concentrated slurries with some success. However, this is not the case for highly concentrated slurries where the flow in the channel is no longer turbulent. Unlike Newtonian fluids, work carried out on flow of pseudo-homogeneous, non-Newtonian fluids in open channels is somewhat limited. Moreover, these results have been published in a variety of sources. This paper attempts to give a critical review of the work carried out on Newtonian and non-Newtonian flow of pseudo-homogeneous non-settling slurries in rectangular open channels. A comparison is also made of the models based on power law, Bingham plastic and Herschel-Bulkley fluids for laminar and turbulent flow in rectangular open channels.

SYNOPSIS A prototype collimated radiometric face scanner was tested in the Harmony Gold Mine. The results obtained during the pilot study indicate that in situ radiometric uranium assays are statistically indistinguishable from those obtained conventionally from channel chip samples. In addition, the study demonstrated that reasonably reliable gold estimates can be deduced from the radiometric measurements, by use of the ratio of gold to uranium within a mine. The instrumentation, calibration procedures, and background determination are described briefly.

There are a couple of dozen junior platinum mining companies coming into existence in Southern African and most intend to mine, concentrate the PGM?s in a flotation product and sell the concentrate to one of the major producers in South Africa. The price they will receive for their product and hence the return they achieve for their investment will depend upon the large number of factors that influence the market for such a product. Unfortunately the number of buyers is severely limited as it is dominated by the two major local producers, Impala Platinum and Anglo Platinum. Furthermore the current smelting technology has limited capacity for UG2 concentrates and high nickel concentrates will quickly fill any available base metal refining capacity. Few if any overseas buyers can compete for the bulky flotation concentrate produced. This paper will explore those factors such as metal recoveries, metal prices, operating costs, capacity constraints, deleterious elements, transport issues, metal premiums and discounts that are in play, types of flotation concentrates, processing capital costs, PGM grades, etc and their impact up on what smelters and refiners might be prepared to pay for such PGM concentrates. Ultimately simple graphs and equations can be developed for probably payment terms for such concentrates. Those who negotiate well will move to the higher return section of the envelope and those who use the concentrator facilities to produce the most saleable combination of flotation concentrates will enhance their returns. A deep and firm understanding of the issues surrounding this market is necessary in order to negotiate the best possible price for the seller.

Many open pit mines are now being mined at very significant depths, often at depths far greater than was originally planned. Even deeper open pits are also being planned, to depths that would be considered deep by underground standards. The heights of the resulting rock slopes are usually beyond the current experience and knowledge base. The exceptions are, perhaps, some very high and steep natural rock slopes. These natural rock slopes are also assuming greater significance owing to pressures of infrastructure development and consequent exposure of such infrastructure to the hazards of slope failure and landslides. Developments in road and rail infrastructure are also resulting in higher rock cuttings. Present understanding of the mechanisms of slope behaviour and failure for high slopes, and for slopes subjected to high in situ stress conditions, appears to be lacking. If the mechanisms of slope behaviour are not well understood, the validity of commonly applied methods of analysis of the stability of such slopes may be questionable. The papers in this specialist International Symposium, including papers on mechanisms and monitoring techniques, and case studies will contribute to the understanding of these issues. The Symposium has attracted good international participation, from both the attendance and authorship points of view. We are very grateful to all presenters and delegates for taking timeout of their very busy schedules to come and share their knowledge and we hope that all will benefit from this event. Thanks are due to the Organising Committee and to the members of our International Advisory Panel for the ideas, the contacts and the badgering, and to the Secretariat of the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy for the organisation.

SYNOPSIS Wet high-intensity magnetic separation was examined as a method for the recovery of copper and lead from Tsumeb flotation tailings. Bench-scale and pilot-plant tests were conducted and, despite the very low magnetic susceptibilities of all the complex copper and lead minerals, copper and lead recoveries of over 60 per cent and almost 50 per cent respectively were obtained at a combined copper and lead grade of up to 13,5 per cent. The recoveries were found to be practically independent of magnetic induction in the range 0,5 to 2,2 T, and the grade of the magnetic concentrate decreased with increasing magnetic induction. The grade of the magnetic concen¬trate improved when the flowrate of the slurry was increased, and desliming was found to have a profound effect on the. metallurgical process. Particles smaller than 10 µm were not recovered, and their presence in inefficiently deslimed samples impaired the overall performance of the magnetic separation

Palabora Mining Company is operating a copper block cave mine in the Limpopo Province of South Africa. The mine was developed in the late nineties with a target ore reserve of 220 million tonnes of carbonatite at 0.69% copper. At 30,000 tonnes per day the operation had an estimated life of mine of approximately 23 years. Cave induced open pit side wall failure occurred in late 2004 with 130 million tonnes of waste reporting to the bottom of the open pit. This failure resulted in potential sterilization and dilution of the ore reserve and subsequent reduction in life of mine. Physical and numerical modelling indicated potential losses of up to 30% of the original ore reserves. Cave Management tools based on throughput principles are utilized to manage the failed waste ingress and ensure an optimum life of mine. Extracting the maximum rate possible, as soon as draw points are commissioned, with the view of achieving the highest production in the short term, is any mining operation?s goal as more money is required sooner. This approach, of course, improves the cash flow but presents a risk in the cave propagation profile as overall draw control is compromised. At Palabora it is evident from a Mineral Resource Throughput Management (MRTM) point of view that maximum production in the short term is not the solution. If high production rates are achieved and the profile of the cave is not manage correctly, this results in failed waste reporting to draw points earlier with adverse effects on grade. This would effectively and significantly shorten Palabora?s Life of Mine. The applications of good MRTM principles are required to assist the value chain for sustained profitability. The process commenced with change management paving the way for a better understanding and a holistic view for all role players.

A computer-based, real-time mine management system has been installed in a number of underground operations. The system’s innovative software application is coupled with wireless data acquisition and database management to provide complete mine monitoring and control execution in closed-loop control fashion. The system is well suited to automatically assign equipment, acquire status, and reassign resources based on status; and to automate information handling. The system has provided mines with improved utilization of the equipment fleet and mining crews, and reduced workplace cycle time. This paper describes the deployment of systems at a number of underground mining operations and discusses future development of the system. The formula developed by Salamon and Munro in 1967 has been used for the past 22 years in the design of bord-and-pillar workings in South African collieries. This paper re-assesses the formula In the light of Its past performance and examines the effect of mining method on coal-pillar strength. An account is given of the extension of the formula so that it can be applied beyond the empirical range for which it was derived, and the advantages of the extended formula (the squat-pillar formula) are described.

An understanding of wear in systems conveying solids is extremely important from the standpoints of design and economics. The lifetime of any bulk solids-handling system depends on the type of solids present and the operating parameters of the transportation system. The relationship between wear in backfill pipelines on South African gold mines and the transportation system's operating parameters is well understood. However, the effect of the transported solids on the pipe wear is less well understood, because of an inability to characterize particle sharpness. The sharpness of the particles, together with their size and hardness, is responsible for the aggressivity of particles, or their ability to cause damage and wear. This paper presents a novel method for the characterization of particle sharpness. The results presented rank particles according to the sharpness of their surfaces.

Eng.), Ph.D. (Cape) (Fellow) The theoretical and experimental results of a study of centrifugalmills are reviewed. Means for the scaling up of such mills are suggested, and tests on a prototype mill are described. Despite the high lining wear in the centrifugal machine, which reduces its productive availability, its other advantages suggest that there is merit in pursuing its further development.

SYNOPSIS This paper describes simple calculations to evaluate the stability of hangingwall and footwall strata at the work¬ing face and in backfilled areas. It shows that the benefits of support provided by backfill can best be realized when the fill is placed as close to the face as possible. The main beneficial effects of fill are that it reduces the stope span, at the same time providing a damping effect on vibrations, and prevents the fall-out of blocks in filled areas, thus maintaining the competence of the strata.

The present study investigates the feasibility of using some materials as start-up slags for the extraction of magnesium metal from Egyptian dolomite ores by the Magnethermic technique. The reduction of roasted dolomite (dolime) takes place in a closed evacuated electric arc furnace (small Magnetherm reactor) using ferrosilicon as a reducing agent and liquid start-up slag as a reduction bath under an inert atmosphere. The operational parameters affecting the stabilization of the start-up slag composition and the extraction of magnesium such as reducing agent stoichiometry, reduction temperature, and time were investigated. The dolomitic charge was in the form of sintered briquettes. The charge was reduced under an argon atmosphere in the Magnetherm reactor for constant period and constant temperature. The results showed that the clinker can be used as a start-up slag for the magnethermic process. Also, the optimum conditions for the extraction process were found at 2XSi stoichiometry to give maximum reduction of 80% after 15 minutes reduction time at a temperature of 1550°C. XRD and XRF measurements were used to determine the phases present and the extent of reduction of magnesium, respectively. Theoretical and engineering aspects of slimes-dam construction by G. W. DONALDSON, M.Sc. (Eng.)(U.C.T.), D.I.C. (Visitor) Tile paper reviews the recommendations made in 1959-60 as a result of research into slimes-dam construction and finds that these recommendations are still valid. The requirements for pollution control, vegetating, in situ leaching, and future development of slimes dams as building areas are considered as they affect the engineering aspects of slimes-dam construction, and it is found that these requirements can be met without any major changes to current recommended slimes-dam construction practice.
