In view of an urgent need for a simple means of simulating the behaviour of stratified rock masses, a long-dormant linear model is revived, generalized, and discussed in some depth. The model is piecewise homogeneous, consisting of a pile of homogeneous isotropic laminae in which the interfaces between beds are parallel and free of shear stresses and cohesion. The continuity of stresses and normal displacements is assured across the bedding planes and, to maintain simplicity, the theory of thin plates is used as the kernel of the model. The paper covers the case where the rock mass consists of discrete beds in which the layers are arranged either heterogeneously or systematically. The stratification is regarded as uniform when all the layers are of the same thickness and their Young's modulus changes exponentially with depth; and as homogeneous when all the laminae have identical thickness and properties. The case of uniform stratification is also treated on the basis of an equivalent quasi-continuum derived from the basic model. Attention is focused on the derivation of influence functions. It is demonstrated that the quasi-continuous models, when they are available, can replace their distinct-layer counterparts. The homogeneous quasi-continuum, which permits the derivation of its influence functions in closed form, facilitates the determination of the roof and floor convergence. In the case of a significant class of problems, the convergence distribution is defined by a second-order differential equation in the xy plane, which simplifies to a Poisson's equation if the mining excavations are unsupported. With this result, the paper prepares for the solution of a host of practical problems. These solutions are presented in a series of papers that are in the course of publication.

Metso Minerals Cisa have developed VisiofrothTM - a system which calculates parameters of the froth surface using vision from remote cameras mounted about individual flotation cells. The parameters calculated from this system can be utilised within process control strategies to achieve stabilisation or optimisation of the flotation process. As part of a JKMRC AMIRA P9 field campaign, froth vision was collected from various cells operated at different air rates and froth depths within Rio Tinto's Northparkes copper roughing and scavenging circuit. At the same time, samples were collected to determine the cell metallurgical performance at each operating condition. These froth images have been processed using the VisiofrothTM system with froth velocity, bubble size, froth collapse rate and various froth colour parameters calculated. These parameters have been compared to the measured concentrate flow and concentrate grade produced at each condition. This analysis shows that the concentrate tonnage flow is strongly correlated with froth velocity whereas the concentrate grade is best correlated using froth velocity in combination with a bubble stability parameter which affects the bubble size distribution on the top surface of the froth. This paper summarises the results from this analysis as well as an overview of the VisiofrothTM system and the parameters that are measured by the software.

Processing of copper-cobalt orebodies in Africa?s Copper Belt has received much recent attention with various flowsheet options being developed specifically for the refining of cobalt. The upfront leach and copper refining routes are well understood whereas the refining of cobalt is more complex, requiring numerous impurity removal steps to produce high purity metal. This paper describes an investigation into one of the possible processing steps in the refining of cobalt, namely, cobalt solvent extraction. The paper emphasizes the importance of upstream impurity removal to achieve the required cobalt solvent extraction feed composition. 18% (v/v) Cyanex 272 in an aliphatic diluents is used as the organic phase. The pH profiles in the various stages are evaluated in order to obtain a raffinate containing <10mg/l cobalt and with a low magnesium content reporting to the stripping section. The pH profile is also used to minimize the impurity deportment to the cobalt electrolyte. The effect of adding a pre-neutralization stage before feeding the organic phase to the extraction circuit is investigated. Zinc build-up in the stripping stages is also looked at. It is recommended for the purpose of this study that four extraction stages at an O:A ratio of 1 with a pH profile from 4.9 to 5.7 be employed. The pH is controlled with 40g/l NaOH. A pre-neutralization stage is required, where the organic phase is contacted with 10 M NaOH. Two scrubbing stages are recommended at an O:A ratio of 40, using the cobalt electrowinning advance electrolyte as the scrub liquor. Three strip stages are to be employed at an O:A ratio of 0.67.

The literature on shotcrete is reviewed with the object of identifying aspects that have not been addressed specifically in terms of its structural performance and manufacture as applied to underground mines. The programme and results of a series of full-scale tests on mesh- and fibre-reinforced shotcrete panels are presented, from which it is concluded that fibre-reinforced shotcrete is competent, especialy at large deformations, and is equivalent in structural performance to mesh-reinforced shotcrete for a fibre content of 3 per cent by mass: furthermore, that the support design systems developed for mesh-reinforced shotcrete are directly applicable to fibre-reinforced shotcrete. The Q-NATM system for the design of temporary tunnel support is presented briefly as one such system. It provides for the integrity of the excavation to be considered in terms of its competence and displacement determinateness, and represents the first systematic procedure for the design of temporary tunnel support. Finally, the support designed on the basis of the Q-NATM system for the main and cross-cut tunnels on the production level in the proposed BA5 block cave at Premier Mine is presented as a practical example of the design of fibre-reinforced shotcrete as part of an overall support system.

Amandelbult Mine is currently undertaking a trial to mechanise the mining of the UG2 reef through the introduction of room and pillar mining. As part of the trial, a system of managing the control of the hanging wall has been introduced, based on systems and technology that are proving successful in the nearby coal mining industry. The principal features are the use of a high bond strength, stiff bolting system which can be easily installed to a high standard, and a range of in situ tests and measurements to optimise the level of support installed to control the movement of the hanging wall. The rock bolt system and the measurements and tests described are new to the platinum mining industry. The paper describes these systems and their adaptation and application to hard rock mining. La Mine d’Amandelbult est actuellement dans des essais en vue de mécaniser l’extraction dans la veine UG2 grâce à l’introduction d’une exploitation par chambres et piliers. Dans le cadre de ces essais, un système de gestion de la paroi suspendue a été introduit, base sur des systèmes et une technologie qui prouvent donner de bons résultats dans l’industrie voisine d’extraction de la houille. Les caractéristiques principales sont l’utilisation d’un système de verrouillage raide et à forte adhérence qui peut être installé à un haut niveau de qualité et une gamme d’essais et de mesures in situ pour optimiser le niveau de soutien installé pour contrôler le mouvement de la paroi suspendue. Le système de verrouillage de la roche ainsi que les mesures et les essais décrits sont une nouveauté dans l’industrie minière du platine. La communication décrit ces systèmes ainsi que leur adaptation et leur application à l’exploitation minière en roche dure. Amandelbult Mine unternimmt gegenwärtig einen Test um den Abbau des UG2 Riffs durchEinführung des Kammerpfeilbau zu mechanisieren. Als Teil dieses Tests wurde ein System zur Kontrolle der Stollenfirstes eingeführt, welches auf jenen Systemen und Technologien basiert, diesich im nahe gelegenen Kohlebergbau als erfolgreich erwiesen. Die prinzipiellen Charakteristikasind der Gebrauch von einem steifen Bolzensytem mit hohem Verbundwiderstand die leicht zueinem hohen Standard gebracht werden können, und eine Reihe von in-situ Tests und Messungenum das Niveau der installierten Unterstützung zu optimieren, und um die Bewegung desStollenfirstes zu kontrollieren. Das Gesteinsbolzensystem, die Messungen und die Tests, diebeschrieben werden, sind neu in der Platinbergbauindustrie. Diese Arbeit beschreibt diese Systeme, deren Anpassung und Anwendung im Hartgesteinsbergbau.

The gold dissolution in sulfuric acid media during industrial oxidative leaching test of sulfide gold-copper flotation concentrates has been achieved. The reason for this was using technological water containing thiocyanates and cyanides, which can dissolve gold under these conditions. The carbon in column (CIC) process for gold recovery from these solutions was proposed. However, significant amounts of copper and iron were adsorbed onto the carbon during CIC technology industrial tests. This resulted in a decrease of the gold content in the loaded carbon up to 0.5 kg/t. Further development of the technology was conducted by optimisation of gold and impurities stripping and implementation of carbon reactivation. It was shown, that the copper extraction from the loaded carbon during cyanide treatment was about 95%. The copper content in the stripped carbon after cyanide treatment was 1.76 kg/t. The gold recovery during high-pressure elution by caustic solution was 98%. The hydrochloric acidic treatment with thermal pre-treatment (reactivation) for removing iron and calcium from gold-free carbon was proposed. In this case, the iron and calcium extractions from carbon were 40-45 and 50-55% respectively. These tests showed that for carbon recycling the sequence operations of ‘cyanide treatment, gold elution, thermal pre-treatment, hydrochloric acidic treatment’ can be used. Pressure leach autoclave circuits are employed in the leaching of ores, concentrates, mattes, alloys and intermediates for the recovery of metals into solution. Once the metals are extracted into solution, the value metals can be recovered by hydrometallurgical means such as by purification followed by electrowinning, hydrogen reduction, pyrohydrolysis, crystallization and other unit operations. In many of these integrated flowsheets the pressure leach step is pivotal to the recovery of the value metals from the host material. Furthermore, the autoclave circuit invariably is a high capital cost component of the plant and an area that is carefully scrutinized when debottlenecking and capacity increases are being considered. This paper identifies a unique proven way of increasing the capacity of existing or new exothermic pressure oxidative leach autoclave circuits by as much as two or three times.

This paper describes the extraction of gold, as the anionic aurocyanide complex, from solution by strong- and weakbase anion-exchange resins. The effects, on the rate of extraction and the loading capacity for gold, of parameters such as pH, temperature, ionic strength, agitation, and the presence of competing anions are reported. The elution and regeneration of strong- and weak-base resins will be examined in a second paper. A third paper in this series will present the results of several smallscale pilot-plant investigations carried out with strong- and weakbase resins In cyanide pulps from various South African gold mines, and will compare the metallurgical performance of resin-In-pulp with that of the carbon-in-pulp process.

This research study includes studies carried out on the recovery of unburned carbon in the ashes of Tuncbilek Thermal Power Plant. Bottom ashes have been identified by X-ray diffraction and X-ray fluorescence. These samples are potentially of class F type and have significant amounts of unburned coal. According to the ash amount that units in the thermal power plant produce, and the analyses of the samples mixed, which used certain amounts in flotation tests, it was found that the bottom ash includes 91.47% ash in dry form and 8.53% combustible matter, and the lower calorific value is 491 kcal/kg. Optimum flotation conditions to get the unburned carbon were subsequently determined by examination of the optimum flotation grain size, pulp density, collector type and amount, depressant type and amount, frother type and amount, agitation speed, and froth-taking time. While the lower calorific value of the thermal power plant bottom ashes of the 3rd , 4th and 5th units and the mixed bottom ash sample was, respectively, 959, 469, 279 and 491 kcal/kg in dry form, it increased to 2490, 1312, 786 and 1348 kcal/kg in the product obtained as a result of flotation in optimum conditions. Slake durability of rocks is an important property of rock-mass and rock-materials in geotechnical practice. The slake durability of rocks is closely related to their mechanical properties. In this paper, mechanical properties and slake durability tests for weak and clay-bearing rocks from Beypazari Trona Bed in Ankara, were performed in order to assess the slake durability and mechanical properties (especially rock strength) of these rocks as well as to understand the relationship between mechanical properties and slake durability. In performing this relationship, statistical based correlation has been applied.

"Ferrochrome (FeCr) is vital for the production of stainless and high-alloy ferritic steels, since it is the only source of new Cr units. FeCr production is an energy-intensive process. The pelletized chromite prereduction process is most likely the FeCr production process with the lowest specific electricity consumption (SEC), i.e. MWh/t, currently in operation. However, due to increases in costs, efficiency, and environmental pressures, FeCr producers are attempting to lower their overall energy consumption even further. Recently, it was proven that pre-oxidation of chromite ore prior to pelletization and prereduction significantly decreases both the SEC and lumpy carbonaceous reductants required for smelting. This paper presents the first attempt at conceptualizing the technoeconomic feasibility of integrating chromite pre-oxidation into the prereduction process. Financial modelling yielded a net present value (NPV) at a 10% discount rate of approximately R900 million and an internal rate of return (IRR) of approximatelyy 30.5% after tax, suggesting that the implementation of pre-oxidation prior to pellet prereduction may be financially viable. Sensitivity analysis indicated that the parameter with the greatest influence on project NPV and IRR is the level of prereduction. This indicates that the relationship between maintaining the optimum pre-oxidation temperature and the degree of prereduction is critical for maximium process efficiency. IntroductionStainless steel is a crucial alloy in modern society. Virgin chromium (Cr) units used in the manufacturing of stainless steel are obtained from ferrochrome (FeCr) – a relatively crude alloy consisting predominantly of Cr and iron (Fe) (Murthy, Tripathy, and Kumar, 2011; Beukes, van Zyl, and Ras, 2012). FeCr is produced mainly by the carbothermic reduction of chromite ore in submerged arc furnaces (SAFs) and direct current arc furnaces (DCFs) (Neizel et al., 2013; Beukes, Dawson, and van Zyl, 2010; Dwarapudi et al., 2013). The energy required to heat, smelt, and reduce the chromite ore to the metallized state is supplied by electricity (Pan, 2013). FeCr production is an energy-intensive process, with a specific electricity consumption (SEC) varying from 2.4 MWh/t to more than 4.0 MWh/t FeCr produced, depending on the process applied (Pan, 2013; Neizel et al., 2013). Daavittila, Honkaniemi, and Jokinen (2004) stated that the typical operational costs of FeCr smelters can be divided into four categories, i.e. chromite ore (30%), carbonaceous reductant (20%), electricity (30%), and other production costs (20%). This makes electricity consumption the joint largest factor that influences operational costs in FeCr production."

"In this investigation, the phosphorus distribution ratios in the CaF2 system and B2O3 system dephosphorization slags for high-phosphorus hot metal pretreatment were measured by an indirect method under laboratory conditions. Firstly, the phosphorus distribution ratio between liquid slag and solid iron was measured, and then the phosphorus distribution ratio between liquid slag and hot metal was calculated. Phosphorus capacity was calculated in terms of the composition and optical basicity of the slag. Dephosphorization slag was also studied by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive analysis, and X-ray diffraction analysis. The experimental results show that the phosphorus capacity of the B2O3 slag system is much greater than that of the CaF2 system. It is demonstrated thatB2O3 can completely replace CaF2 as fluxing agent for high-phosphorus hot metal pretreatment. With CaF2 as fluxing agent, the phosphorus capacity increases with increasing CaO content in the slag, but the phosphorus distribution ratio decreases. B2O3, when used as fluxing agent, can react with high melting point phases such as 2CaO·SiO2 and 3CaO·P2O5 in the slag to form new phases with low melting points such as 11CaO·B2O3.4SiO2, 2CaO·B2O3.SiO2, and Ca9.93(P5.84B0.16O24) (B0.67O1.79), thereby acting as a fluxing agent. When the ratio of w(B2O3)/w(CaO) is 0.16, the phosphorus distribution ratio reaches its maximum value, that is, the dephosphorization ability of the slag is at its maximum. IntroductionAs international iron ore prices continue to rise, the development of China's steel industry is facing a lot of pressure. Against this background, development and utilization of domestic high-phosphorus iron ore resources is particularly important. When highphosphorus iron ore is used in ironmaking, the phosphorus content in the hot metal can reach 0.35% or more, and the hot metal must be pretreated. For hot metal with 0.08–0.10% dissolved phosphorus, the traditional hot metal dephosphorization pretreatment technologies are relatively mature. However, when using these methods to dephosphorize hot metal containing 0.35% P or more, the amount of dephosphorization slag can reach 100–150 kg per ton of hot metal. Furthermore, the traditional dephosphorization methods require the addition of large amounts of CaF2 as fluxing agent, and this results in high fluoride levels in the dephosphorization slag. The fluorine in the slag can partially dissolve in water and thereby causes high fluoride concentration in the water and soil. Once the fluoride is absorbed by humans or animals, it can result in toxic effects on the central nervous system and myocardium. In addition, fluoride can accumulate in the environment, and thereby pose a health risk to animals and humans through the food chain (Li, 2007; Liu, Wang, and Dong, 2011, Diao, 2013). The objective of this research is to replace CaF2 with B2O3 as fluxing agent while achieving the expected goals of hot metal pretreatment."

Anhydrous zirconium tetrafluoride can be used as a precursor for the manufacturing of nuclear-grade zirconium metal. This can be done by fluorinating plasma-dissociated zircon with ammonium bifluoride in a batch reactor. This paper describes the batch process. It was proved that anhydrous zirconium tetrafluoride can be manufactured by this route as confirmed by X-ray diffraction. The process shows potential for scaling up to the kilogram scale and possibly the tonnage scale.

Drilling exploration over the Wesizwe Platinum Limited?s Pilanesberg Project has identified the Merensky Reef at depths varying from 594 m to 1 552 m depth. Merensky Reef thickness varies from 0.05 m to 3.63 m and contains PGE(4) mineralization above a cut-off grade of 1.0 g/t over intersection widths of 0.95 m to 2.63 m. Four distinct facies types have been identified over the property, viz.1) Normal Merensky Reef, generally 1.2 m thick, bounded by thin top and basal chromitite layers and composed of upper feldspathic pyroxenite and lower feldspathic olivine pegmatoids containing base metal sulphide mineralization overlying poikilitic anorthosites. 2) Single chromitite Merensky Reef, generally0.15 m thick and usually devoid of internal silicate material, overlying variable stratigraphy containing significant base metal sulphide mineralization. 3) Detached Merensky Reef, generally1.0 m thick, bounded by thin top and basal chromitite layers and composed of feldspathic pyroxenite or pyroxenite containing base metal sulphide mineralization overlying Merensky Pyroxenite. 4) Normal footwall Merensky Reef, generally 1.8 m thick, bounded by thin top and basal chromitite layers and composed of feldspathic pyroxenite containing base metal sulphide mineralization overlying norites also containing significant base metal sulphide mineralization. The PGE(4) content?s (g/m2) distribution for the global intersection data appears to be lognormal, and conversion to lognormal space produces a near normal distribution which could be interpreted as a compound lognormal distribution. The mean PGE(4) contents estimated by these three different distributions are the same, and thus do not impact on the contained metal. Data for the Normal Merensky Reef facies type are sufficient to indicate that a normal distribution is followed for this facies type, and therefore does not need to be transformed to log space for estimation of the mean and the 90% confidence limits. A global evaluation based on all of the data is compared with a facies-weighted evaluation. The latter method is noted to provide a better definition of the associated estimation errors and thus potential classification of Mineral Resources. A valuation of $20.95 for Inferred and $41.90 for Indicated PGE(4) ounces is applied to both of the evaluations and compared. The global evaluation is considered to over-value the project by approximately 40%, thus indicating that valuations based on global summary sampling data that have a compound distribution may be materially flawed, and that cognizance of the underlying geology is crucial for unbiased valuation.

COLLOQUIUM The President welcomed visitors and members. He stressed that the discussion would be informal and that any contributor requiring publication should submit his contribution in writing. He then thanked the authors for providing pre-prints of the papers. After the President had concluded his opening remarks, he asked Professor J. de V. Lambrechts to act as Colloquium Chairman for the day and he, in turn, introduced the three Session Chairmen namely, Dr A. Whillier (Chamber of Mines and President of the Mine Ventilation Society); Mr M. Barcza (Managing Director, Corner House Laboratories); and Mr L. W. P. v.d. Bosch (Chief Consulting Engineer, Union Corporation). The following papers were presented: "Fan efficiency investigation on mines of the Union Corporation, Ltd." by J. A. Drummond. Published in the Journal Feb. 1972. "The design of underground cooling towers" by A. Whilliel&apos;. Published in the Journal, Oct. 1971. "Some aspects of the design of cooling plant installations" by R. Hemp. Published in the Journal, Nov. 1971. "The planning of ventilation and refrigeration requirements in deep mines" by D. F. H. Grave and R. M. Stroh. Published in the Journal, Dec. 1971. "Cooling power of underground environments" by D. Mitchell and A. Whillier. Published in the Journal, Oct. 1971. At the conclusion of the three technical sessions the Symposium Chairman commented as follows, indicating that he would prepare a written summing up at a later stage: "The tone of the colloquium has had a sincerely practical note about it. It would have been a pity if the ventilation experts talked only theory and little practice. This practical theme has, I am sure, made the colloquium interesting to both ventilation men and others whose daily tasks do not touch so closely on this fascinating subject. This practical theme was in evidence through all the papers and contributions. Some of you may have felt that there was not enough emphasis on the word &apos;economics&apos; as advertised in the broad title of the colloquium. I do not think this was really a valid criticism because as someone said &apos;it all boils down to Rands in the end!&apos; So whether it was a case of low fan efficiency, poor design of cooling towers, wrong planning or low human efficiency due to high heat stress. . . it all boils down to money saving and therefore economics, whenever improvements are forthcoming. The title of the colloquium was thus not misplaced. The views of senior mining men on the production side are appreciated. Let us say that this exchange of views between ventilation engineers and those who have to take the final decisions and spend the money, should prove to be most rewarding." Professor Lambrechts finally thanked the Session Chairmen and everybody who had helped to make the colloquium a success and the meeting closed at 4.0 p.m. In a subsequent written summing up, the Colloquium Chairman gave the following as his impressions of some of the highlights which emerged from the papers and discussion thereof: (The names indicate the authors only). Drummond: It was hinted that the time had arrived to consider the introduction of a South African fan test code which would be better suited to local conditions than the currently acknowledged B.S.S. code which, however, is seldom enforceable in practice. In this connection also, there was prominent reference to the thermodynamic approach of McPherson. Wide variations in the quality of maintenance of, and repair work on, fans were stressed. It was mooted that ventilation engineers responsible for estimating the basic duty specifications for large fans, frequently played safe by overestimating the pressure required, thus ensuring that there would not be a shortfall in air volume delivered. This usually meant reduced fan efficiency and it was suggested that decision makers seemed to lay more emphasis on volume of air delivered than on real eco-

Minera La Parreña, S.A. de C.V., Milpillas operation is an underground mine designed to process 8 352 tons of ore per day for the recovery of copper through crushing, heap leaching, solvent extraction and electrowinning facilities. In order to optimize copper recovery during leaching, the ore is crushed to 13 mm and subjected to primary sampling every 15 minutes for metallurgical accounting. At the same particle size, primary sample goes to secondary sampling and then, the secondary sample is crushed to 2 mm before tertiary sampling. The tertiary sample is sent to laboratory where a final sample is obtained and pulverized to 106 microns for copper assay. This paper shows a review of sampling strategy focused on minimizing or eliminating sampling errors and an experiment designed to determine copper head grade profile as well as the best sampling frequency.

During the period October 2003 to June 2004, a containerized optical sorting pilot plant was operated at Kloof Gold Mine on a waste rock dump. In this paper, we describe the test work and its results leading to the decision to operate this pilot plant. This paper presents the operational data and financial figures achieved during this project, in particular, for the month of June 2004 when the plant was run at full capacity on three shifts, 24 hour operation. These results are also extrapolated and presented to show the profitability of such an operation at today?s gold price levels and cost structure.
