Lead-based alloys are the primary anodes used in electrowinning from sulphate-based aqueous systems. Lead anode technology has evolved over the years, migrating from pure lead and lead-antimonial alloys to the present day lead-calcium-tin alloys for copper electrowinning and lead-silver alloys for zinc electrowinning. It has also migrated from cast to rolled microstructures in search of improved mechanical properties and higher corrosion resistance. Although great strides have been made in the development of new alloys and production processes, the industry still has unresolved issues related to untimely corrosion which limits anode life and may lead to higher contaminant levels in the metal being produced. Lead anodes corrode because of the difference in the chemical/electrochemical potential across the microstructural features of an anode. Given a very high purity material, we find that the grain boundary areas corrode significantly faster than the rest of the grain. The desire to minimize grain boundary corrosion by a balance of alloying element selection and microstructural design allows the grain boundary area to be engineered. However, operational issues can lead to unexpected corrosion behaviours which we will discuss moving forward. The comments in this work, though directed toward copper electrowinning, can be extended to similar phenomena in other metals electrowon from sulphate media (i.e., zinc, nickel, cobalt, manganese). The lifecycle of electrowinning anodes is dependent upon electrowinning tankhouse operating conditions and maintenance of the anodes, including cleaning and straightening. This paper will focus on the operational aspects of maximizing the utilization of lead electrowinning anodes.

In order to predict the composition of inclusions and to ascertain a method to prevent inclusions from forming in liquid Fe-16 mass Cr alloy, a thermodynamic database was developed through a quantitative determination of thermodynamic relationships of Cr-Al-Si-Mn systems in the liquid Fe alloys. Applications of the databases to the prediction of Mn/Si complex deoxidation with Alin Fe-16 mass Cr alloy were demonstrated in succession. The electromagnetic levitation technique using a cold crucible was employed to separate inclusions from liquid metallic alloys completely and to prevent any contamination from surroundings. Various interaction parameters in the liquid Fe-16 mass per cent Cr alloy system were determined; these are: [eAl(Fe)Cr= 0.19/T, rAl(Fe)O,Cr= -0.01, rAl(Fe)O,Cr= -0.00013, eS1Cr(Fe)= -0.38/T,rSi(Fe)O,Cr= 0.007, rO(Fe)Si,Cr= 0.0044, rA1(Fe)Si,Cr= -0.0075, rSi(Fe)A1,Cr= -0.0078, rSi(Fe)Mn,Cr= 0.005, and rMn(Fe)Si,Cr=0.01.] An improved database, utilizing interaction parameters for molten metal determined in this study, and the Fact Sage slag database of the MnO-SiO2-Al2O3-CrOx-MgO system were used for thermodynamic calculations. These were carried out under various thermodynamic conditions, and results were compared with experimental data of Si/Al, Mn/Si, and Mn/Si/Al deoxidation equilibria. With the abovementioned results, together with experimentally obtained data, thermodynamic conditions were determined, in particular Mn and Si contents, under which liquid inclusions form in liquid Fe-16 mass per cent Cr alloy. The critical Al content in liquid Fe-16 per cent Cr alloy, above which solid inclusion of corundum phase ((Al,Cr)2O3) formed, was as low as 10 ppm. This indicates that extreme care must be taken in controlling the Al content in the metal to avoid formation of solid corundum phase ((Al,Cr)2O3) inclusion. The compositional change prediction of inclusions, which originate from slag entrapment and by Ca addition, was demonstrated by use of the alloy database optimized through this study, and the Fact Sage oxide database. For Si-deoxidized Fe-16 per cent Cr alloy, high Si and low basicity of slag are effective to obtain liquid inclusions. For Al-deoxidized Fe-16 per cent Cr alloy, it is important to keep the Si content lower than 0.1 per cent and it is required to add Ca. "Run-of-mine coal contains particles of different sizes with different specific gravities, and when this coal is crushed, the amount of material present in a particular density class changes. This alters the washability characteristics of the coal, which affects the quantity, quality, and separation efficiency of the gravity-based coal washing process. The degree of difficulty in washing a typical coal at a particular specific gravity depends mostly on the amount of material occurring within ±0.1 specific gravity range, which is known as ‘near-gravity material’ at that particular specific gravity of separation. In this paper, two numerical indices, namely ‘near-gravity material index’ and ‘index of washability’, are used to quantify the distribution of near-gravity material in different density classes and to evaluate the degree of difficulty involved in the washing process. The results of this preliminary investigation indicate the uniform distribution of near-gravity material in all density classes for finer size fractions, whereas for coarser size fractions more near-gravity material is present in the lower density classes, making the washing process more difficult at a lower specific gravity of separation. IntroductionThe prime objective of coal beneficiation is to remove physical impurities as effectively and economically as possible. The beneficiation process includes various operations on the asmined coal to make it more suitable for enduse application without destroying the physical identity of the coal. There are several coal beneficiation processes, but gravity-based separators remain the most efficient unit operation for removing the undesirable gangue material from run-of-mine coal. These separators exploit the difference in density between coal particles and gangue particles to effect a separation. The feed is introduced into an aqueous suspension of ultrafine magnetite with a particular density. The feed particles with a relative density less than that of the suspension (clean coal) float to the top surface of the suspension, whereas particles denser than the suspension density (gangue material) sink to the bottom. When the difference in density between the particle and the aqueous suspension is large, the separation is easy, but when this difference is less the separation becomes much more difficult since the settling velocity of the particles is very low. This lower settling velocity increases the probability that particles that should report to floats report to sinks, and vice versa, hence increasing the amount of misplaced material. Therefore, the degree of difficulty in beneficiating a typical coal at a particular specific gravity depends on the amount of material occurring within ±0.1 specific gravity range. This is known as ‘neargravity’ material, also termed ‘near-dense’ material, at that particular specific gravity of separation."

ABSTRACT: Two methodologies for the three-dimensional simulation of the run out of rock avalanches are presented: one based on a granular approach and the other based on a continuum equivalent approach. An evaluation of the possible run out area of the Oselitzenbach landslide (Carnic Alps, Austria) has been carried out applying the two methodologies. The combined use of these two approaches makes it possible a comprehensive assessment of the run out area. RESUME: Deux méthodologies pour la simulation tridimensionnelle de la propagation des avalanches rocheuses sont présentées: la première est basée sur un modèle de type granulaire et la deuxième sur un modèle du continu équivalent. Une évaluation de la propagation éventuelle de l’avalanche de Oselitzenbach (Alpes Carniche, Autriche) a été réalisée en utilisant les deux méthodologies. Les résultats obtenus montrent que la combinaison des deux approches rend possible une analyse plus complète de la phase de propagation. KURZFASSUNG: Für die dreidimensionale Modellierung eines Felsmassensturzes (sturzstrom) werden zwei Methoden, eine granulare und eine kontinuumsmechanische Methode, vorgestellt. Beide Methoden wurden zur Abschätzung der Ausbreitung (runout) der Massenbewegung Oselitzenbach (Karnische Alpen, Österreich) herangezogen. Die kombinierte Anwendung beider Methoden ermöglichte eine umfassende Beurteilung des möglichen Ausbreitungsbereichs.

Computers have revolutionized the collection of data on modern mines. Never before has it been possible to collect data from all aspects of the mining value chain at rates now common. With this has come a new challenge. Deriving information from these copious amounts of data and disseminating it. This problem is being exacerbated by technical software systems, which use proprietary and binary data formats that severely inhibit the flow of data and information both across departments and the larger organization. Generally this had led to data duplication and data redundancy. The Gemcom Enterprise Mining System (GEMS) makes use of industry standard, secure and open databases for all its data objects. It manages multiple users accessing the same bits and bytes in the database, preventing data duplication and redundancy. Developed in the Microsoft BackOffice ® environment, GEMS is also able to leverage the enormous amount of tools available in this environment, whether it’s for e-mail notification, reporting or data capture. Microsoft’s® Active Server Pages are one of these tools. These are standards used to create dynamic and interactive web pages with links into databases and many other objects. The real example outlined in the text, demonstrates how a user anywhere in the world is able to login to a web page and run a query that returns a report with vector plots of performance for the user-selected time frame. As integration is tightened between the various components of the mining value chain, the importance and reliance on ASP pages will grow as the need for management information tools develops. The selection of open-pit slope angles involves high-value decisions with small changes in slope angle, often representing significant changes in net present value. The existing methods used to define design acceptance criteria have evolved from factor of safety to probability of failure (P[F]) to risk consequence to risk frontiers, which represents current state of the art. Current design acceptance measures are based on references to published tables representing the experience and judgement of their authors, who did not specify the purpose of the measures contained therein. As the purpose of the published design acceptance criteria is not specified (i.e., definite stability, marginal stability, optimization, etc.), such tables cannot be used to achieve optimum slope angles that maximize profitability. This paper develops a design acceptance criterion that maximizes profitability by defining a formulation for optimum risk that balances expected risk and reward. The model developed is titled the Mining Risk Model (MRM), and is applied to open-pit slope angle selection through an equation for optimum probability of downside (P[D]O) that balances the upside or opportunity, the P[F], and the downside impact. This formulation for optimum risk is unique, as many authors have presented objective functions for their risk models that can be optimized, but none of the sources reviewed contained a formulation for optimum risk. The MRM is sufficiently flexible to allow the design performance measure that drives P[F], and hence P[D]O, to be selected based on the intended goal. Furthermore, the essential information that must be known to quantify optimum risk is defined. This allows users to determine what information to collect for optimum risk decisions. A further benefit of the MRM is that slope angle decisions and pit shells can be ranked to select the best option, and a threshold is provided that separates acceptable from unacceptable decisions. Finally, the workflow and information required to determine optimum risk are presented.

Seismic events and pillar failures observed in two platinum mines in the Rustenburg area, South Africa, were investigated. We studied the sources of approximately 300 largest seismic events recorded in 2009. Moment tensors of these events were estimated from amplitudes and polarities of P- and S-waves. The inverted mechanisms contain isotropic implosive components in many instances. Analyses of uncertainty of the moment tensor solutions confirmed the significance of the implosive component in general. Several documented cases of pillar failure were considered in detail. For each of these a seismic moment tensor was calculated from an elastic stress model assuming an instant removal of a failed pillar. The geometries and magnitudes of the theoretical seismic moment tensors are in agreement with the observed (i.e. inverted from seismic data). The results indicate that either pillar failure or fracturing in the proximity of the reef (within a fraction of the dominant wavelength of seismic waves) are responsible for a significant portion of the large events recorded in these mines.

Automation technologies are increasingly adopted in different mines world-wide. This paper presents the technical aspects of vehicle automation applications at two Noranda operating mines. Teleoperation of 5 LHDs at Noranda?s Bell Allard mine is used in order to meet aggressive mining requirements under difficult conditions. The equipment is performing under high demand for reliability and performance. In order to further increase performance, automated loading has been commissioned on one of the LHDs and is being tested. Results to date indicate improved performance with respect to an operator through better filling of the bucket, fewer passes at the muck pile and shorter cycles. Noranda?s Brunswick mine is currently commissioning an automated haulage zone where two optically guided trucks transport ore from a remotely operated chute to two ore passes. Expected operational advantages include increased system capacity and enhanced safety and comfort for the operator. Monitoring to date indicates that the trucks can operate reliably under the conditions imposed by mine production.

Outotec?s direct leaching process is an atmospheric leaching process for sulphidic zinc concentrates. The direct leaching process, based on special leaching reactors developed by Outokumpu, is the most economical way to produce electrolytic zinc. The production scale applications of the process realized so far are in use at Boliden?s Kokkola and Odda zinc plants. A new full-scale application of Outotec?s direct leaching process will be started in 2008 in China. The process is integrated to the existing production plant, replacing part of the old production facilities by modern technology. Besides high zinc extraction the plant expansion and modernization offers also indium recovery, iron precipitation and solution purification processes. The process equipment includes tailor-made reactors designed on the basis of the work and experience of Outotec research center. It has been observed that the productivity of ferromanganese furnaces, and the stability of metal and slag compositions, vary considerably according to the type of coke used as reductant. However, the desired properties of coke for optimum furnace performance are not well understood. In this investigation, the behaviour of four cokes, which exhibited a wide range of performance in ferromanganese production, was investigated by means of laboratory simulations of reducing conditions in the furnace. The Stationary Charge in Controlled Environment (SCICE) technique was used to simulate the conditions in the furnace shaft. Batches of raw materials, mixed in the same proportions as used in practice, were heated at fixed rates to 900, 1100 and 1300°C then cooled. The mass loss was used as a measure of the degree of reduction. Conditions in the lower part of the furnace were simulated by means of melt-reduction experiments in which lumps of coke were drilled out to form crucibles in which enriched ferromanganese slags were reduced at 1500 and 1550°C then cooled. An examination of the raw materials and the cooled, reacted charges using a variety of analytical and characterization techniques enabled the sequence of reaction and changes in morphology of the raw materials to be followed. This enabled an understanding of the behaviour of the cokes during reduction to be developed, which was then used to explain the observed performance of the cokes in practice. By relating the observed behaviour of the cokes in the laboratory tests to measurable properties of the unreacted cokes and to their observed performance in practice, it was shown that to achieve high productivity and good furnace performance, cokes should be selected to have moderately high reactivity towards CO2 (Boudouard reactivity) relative to conventional iron blast furnace cokes.

Bwana Mkubwa is a 50 000 tons per annum copper cathode producer, owned by First Quantum Minerals and located in Ndola, on the Zambian Copperbelt. The Bwana Mkubwa solvent-extraction circuit was started up in 1997. In 2002, the plant began treating ore from First Quantum?s Lonshi mine located in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Lonshi ore is exceptionally fine and the amount of solids in the feed solution reporting to the solvent-extraction feed solution increased dramatically. Initially, crud was filtered in a filter press, but this rapidly blinded and seldom produced anything better than a wet sludge containing large quantities of organic. In December 2003 the decision was made to install a Flottweg Z4E-3/441 Tricanter® centrifuge to recover organic from the crud. The installation was completed in June 2004 and has since led to significant improvements in plant operability and savings in organic consumption.

Since the early 1970s research has been ongoing to develop a cost-effective way of continuously mining the narrow reef, hard rock, typical of South African gold and platinum mines. In the late1980s it was shown that impact ripping was a practical solution for the deep gold mines. In March2001 Lonmin and Sandvik agreed to co-operate in an endeavour to design and manufacture a prototype narrow reef mining machine with the ultimate aim of producing such a machine on a commercial basis that would enable Lonmin to create a safer and more productive environment within its mines and for Sandvik to enhance its leading position as a supplier of a new generation hard rock cutting machine. This paper describes the developed technology, the current progress of the delivery of the required objectives and the optimum mining layout for the roll-out of the mining method.

South Africa?s Mining Industry operates in an uncertain world. The industry is buffeted by problems regarding retrenchments, unemployment, low productivity, rising costs, volatile exchange rates, commodity prices and government regulations. With these uncertainties facing the decision makers, what does applied technology offer the industry?s management? Modelling languages with risk analysis have been available for decades, but in the past their use has been very expensive, requiring large mainframe computers and lots of computer time. Today, PCs and laptops have incredible power, which makes interactive risk analysis affordable and viable for all enterprises, whether small or large. ?What is risk analysis? ?What is Monte Carlo simulation? ?What kinds of computer models need to be created to use risk analysis and Monte Carlo simulation effectively? This paper addresses these questions and illustrates, with a practical example in the mining industry, how risk analysis techniques can be used to support decisions in the climate of uncertainty.

"SynopsisAccording to the overlying rock strength and thickness of 10 shallow coal seams in China, the strata are classified into four types: weak and laminated strata (hereinafter referred to as WL), weak and massive strata (WM), strong and laminated strata (SL), and strong and massive strata (SM). The four types of strata, together with longwall panel height (M), panel length (L), and seam depth (H) are factors that influence the loads on hydraulic power supports. Principal component analysis was used to study the seven influencing factors. It turns out that seam depth (H) is multicollinear with WL, WM, SL, and SM. Thus the enumerated seven factors are divided into two models. In Model 1, six factors; panel height, panel length, and layer thickness of the four type strata are involved. In Model 2, three factors; panel height, panel length, and seam depth are included. Using multivariate regression analysis, two equations to calculate loads on supports are obtained for each model. The equations were applied to shallow coal seams. The equation of Model 1 is more accurate than that of Model 2, but Model 2 could be further used in deep coal seams. The equations were coded through VB programming to simplify the calculation.IntroductionTo ensure coal production in the long term, the focus of coal mining has been gradually shifted to the western areas of China in recent years due to rich coal resources in this region. Most of the coal seams in this area are shallow but the support loads are abnormally high. In these circumstances, the chock loads estimating methods used in the past do not work. If the rated working resistance of a support is larger than needed, the shield is unable to fully perform, while a lower working resistance would lead to accidents like shield crushing or even casualties. This problem is frequently found in shallow coal seams such as Shenfu-Dongsheng, Yulin, Tuha, Lingwu etc. (Zhang, 2011). Thus, to ensure safety and efficiency during mining, the estimation of support loads and selection of supports are of great significance."

"Nickel electroplating from sulphate electrolyte is an efficient process. To achieve good quality cathode, however, parameters such as temperature, nickel concentration, pH, electrode alignment, electrolyte flowrate and additives must be optimised, because these affect cathode morphology and current efficiency. It is also important to control the clarity and contamination of the electrolyte, as these have a considerable effect on the quality of the cathode surface. Delamination, surface roughness and pitting on the cathode surface can be caused by incorporation of solid particles or impurities form the electrolyte. Three types of solid particles were investigated: cuprous selenide, barium/ lead sulphate (co-precipitated) and ferric hydroxide. These particles can be found in industrial electrolytes, especially if there is a problem with the filtration step or contaminants have reacted to form insoluble particles. A rotating cylinder Hull cell was used for this investigation. It is found that the effects on morphology depend on the type of solid, concentration, particle size, current density and electrolyte flowrate. Cuprous selenide is the most detrimental, especially at higher concentrations, higher current densities and low flowrates. Increased rotational speed offers a uniform sheet of fine gas bubbles across the surface of the cathode which reduces the thickness of the diffusion layer of liquid adjacent to the cathode and increases the rate of mass transport to the cathode from the bulk liquid. INTRODUCTION Electrowinning operations are important when recovering associated by-products of nickel production, such as copper, cobalt and zinc, from pressure leach solutions. The base metal mineralization associated with platinum-group metal (PGM) production yields significant quantities of copper and nickel as by-products. The base metal refinery is vital in PGM processing as it increases the PGM concentration from mined ore by a factor of 400, in comparison with concentration by flotation (20 times) and pyrometallurgical processing (20 times) (Crundwell et al., 2011). Anglo American Platinum Ltd produces nickel cathodes by electrowinning and purges sodium from the base metal refinery in the form of sodium sulphate at the Rustenburg Base Metals Refinery (RBMR), as shown in Figure 1. This is the Sherritt acid leach process used in most base metal refineries to ensure no loss of PGMs and shows the subsequent purification steps for copper and nickel. Other refineries in Zimbabwe, such as Bindura and Empress, use the Outokumpu leach process (Pavlides, 2001)."

Block caving methods, when operated under favourable rock mass conditions, can achieve higher production rates and lower operating costs than other various existing underground mining applications. For this reason, it has been considered the preferred method for the mining of deep and large orebodies in current and future operations around the world. One of the key aspects in the design of block caves is the selection of the production level layout, which, among other parameters, is based on the gravity flow characteristics of the caved rock. This is because gravity flow has a large impact on total ore recovery and the amount of dilution in a caving operation. Today, there are a number of computer based methods which aim to emulate the gravity flow pattern of the caved rock. In this paper, the authors present the development of FlowSiman improved model of gravity flow based on the cellular automaton approach, to estimate dilution entry, mixing and ore recovery. As part of the model development, flow simulations were conducted and subsequently compared to full-scale data collected at two mine sectors operated by Codelco Chile. The results indicate that by using proper calibrated parameters, good correlations between simulated and measured grades as well as dilution entry are obtained. The potential use of the numerical tool to evaluate drawpoint spacing in terms of recovery and dilution for block/panel caving operations is also presented.

Rosh Pinah Zinc Corporation (Pty) Ltd (RPZC) operates an underground mine at Rosh Pinah in southern Namibia producing zinc and lead sulphide concentrates. It currently mines around 0.7 Mtpa run-of-mine ore containing around 6-10% zinc and 1.5-3.5% lead. As part of past exploration and current intensified exploration, a massive continuous low grade ore body was identified which grades at around 3% zinc equivalent. This ore body is near current mining infrastructure and could be amenable to bulk mining methods. In the present paper a concept is presented on how it could be exploited. As a precursor to exploitation of the low grade a number of enhancements are proposed for the current mining operations including: ? shortening load-and-haul distances by extending the conveyor raise further down the mine in a phased manner and back-filling of waste into mined-out stopes; ? use of mobile crushing plant at the crusher tip, and; ? installation of a system to allow scoops to load directly from stopes into ore passes close by combined with truck loops to haul from these ore passes to the crusher tip. To exploit the low grade ore body the following concepts are proposed: ? open stope mining from two areas at a total rate of up to 2 Mtpa; ? underground pre-beneficiation of mined low-grade ore near the stopes using either dense medium separation or X-ray sorting; ? pre-beneficiated tails back-filled to mined-out stopes and; ? pre-beneficiated product transported to surface by linking into proposed run-of-mine conveying system.

A test has been devised that can predict accurately the % crystallinity developed in a slag film formed between the steel strand and the mould. The % crystallinity in the test samples was determined and compared with that for slag films formed in the mould when casting with that flux. There was good agreement between the % crystallinity in the test samples and the slag films. It was found that additions of TiO2and ZrO2had little effect on the amount of crystalline phase formed, but additions of CaO caused a dramatic increase in the amount of crystalline phase formed. Various parameters (which can be calculated from chemical composition of the flux) have been plotted against % crystallinty in the test samples. It was found that the modified (NBO/T) ratio provided the best relation with % crystallinity for the various parameters tested. There commended relation is % crystallinity=141.1(NBO/T)-284.0. "Despite the pre-eminence of the Jwaneng Diamond Mine as the world’s richest diamond mine, the discovery story has long been clouded in mystery. This is the 45-year old untold story of the Jwaneng discovery and contemporaneous Bechuanaland/Botswana political and socioeconomic history. Diamond exploration by De Beers in Bechuanaland began in 1955, with the first true kimberlite discovery near Letlhakane in 1967, before Clifford’s Rule was applied and before the use of indicator mineral chemistry. Surface deflation soil sampling and bioturbation by termites was the foundation for exploration into the Kalahari. The 1962 reconnaissance programme south of Jwaneng had failed to make any discoveries. Improved sampling methods were applied to the Kalaharicovered areas in 1969 and positive results were received by year-end. The Whateley’s Wish percussion drill-hole in December 1972 was confirmed as Jwaneng 2424D/K2 with drill core in early 1973. Jumper drills were required to penetrate the Kalahari sand cover. Diamond resources were demonstrated despite multiple technical problems. IntroductionThe Jwaneng Diamond Mine is, by value, the world’s richest diamond mine. Harry Oppenheimer is quoted as saying that Jwaneng is ‘the most important primary deposit found anywhere in the world since the discovery at Kimberley more than a century ago.’ (Taylor III, 1982) The mine opened in 1982 after some nine years of evaluation and construction since discovery in February 1973. Debswana (2017) states that 2015 production was 7.87 Mt of ore from which 10.408 million carats were recovered at a grade of 132 carats per 100 t (cpht). Although the value is not reported, it was noted that Jwaneng contributes 60–70% of Debswana’s total revenue from all mines, including Orapa, Damtshaa, and Letlhakane (Debswana, 2017)."

This paper is based on a study to determine the potential beneficiation opportunities for marble from Griekwastad in the Northern Cape Province. The marble was characterized mineralogically by X-ray diffraction. Major and trace elements were determined using inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy. The sample was crushed, and the crushed material beneficiated by tumbling and polishing. The resulting beads were incorporated into a variety of jewellery and other decorative items. It is concluded that the beneficiation of Griekwastad marble presents a good opportunity for value addition and job creation, provided that an effective marketing strategy for the products can be developed..
