Coal is the nation's most abundant fossil energy resource and serves as the primary fuel for the U.S. electric-power industry. However, its continued and expanded use is often challenged by the nature and amount of its associated impurities, such as mineral matter, sulfur, and trace elements. The moderate- to high-sulfur content of many U.S. coals is of particular concern today as potentially more stringent regulations requiring further reductions in sulfur dioxide emissions are being considered. The most prevalent method currently employed to control SO2 emissions from coal-burning facilities is post-combustion flue-gas desulfurization. However, physical coal cleaning (a.k.a. beneficiation, preparation) methods can also be effective in removing sulfur and ash impurities from coal prior to combustion. In a typical physical cleaning operation, raw coal is crushed to about 50-mm (2-inch) topsize, and then screened into coarse, intermediate, and fine size fractions. Crushing liberates some of the ash-forming minerals, including the portion of inorganic sulfur (pyritic) not chemically bound to the coal matrix. The percentage of impurities liberated generally increases as the coal particle size is reduced. Coarse- and intermediate-sized coal particles are typically subjected to specific gravity-based cleaning methods, while fine-sized (less than 0.5-mm) coal particles are beneficiated using froth flotation, a technique based on surface property differences. Greater cleaning potential exists at finer sizes because of increased liberation of impurities, but this potential is not fully realized because of inefficiencies associated with fine particle separation using state-of-the-art coal cleaning technologies.

There is a natural resistance to change in any form. When it comes to implementing a game-changing technology like autonomous haulage on an operating mine site, the resistance can at times appear insurmountable. Whether based on real information or misguided preconceptions, it?s essential that we don?t underestimate the effort it will take to overcome this resistance, while clearly recognizing when it?s worth the effort. These realizations did not happen overnight for sites where autonomous haulage has been implemented. Nor did they happen overnight for manufacturers of autonomous mining equipment. Caterpillar, for example, began building toward autonomy more than 30 years ago and had a truck operating in the mid-1990s. Lessons learned during those early years led to the realization that there was much more to be learned ? not just about the machines themselves, but about the systems and knowledge that must be in place for a successful implementation. Working closely with customers, initiating real-life demonstrations on mine sites, having discussions with regulatory agencies and other stakeholders ? these and many other activities were necessary before autonomy could be fully and successfully launched. After decades of effort, Caterpillar?s first official commercial autonomous mine site went to work in 2011 in Farmington, NM.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) has recently studied several redirected scrubber discharge configurations in its full-scale continuous miner gallery for both dust and gas control when using an exhaust face ventilation system. Dust and gas measurements around the continuous mining machine in the laboratory showed that the conventional scrubber discharge directed outby the face with a 12.2-m (40-ft) exhaust curtain setback appeared to be one of the better configurations for controlling both dust and gas. Redirecting all the air towards the face equally up both sides of the machine increased both the dust and gas concentrations around the machine. When all the air was redirected towards the face on the off-curtain side of the machine, gas accumulations tended to be reduced at the face at the expense of increased dust levels in the return and on the curtain side of the mining machine. A 6.1-m (20-ft) exhaust curtain setback without the scrubber operating resulted in the lowest dust levels around the continuous mining machine, but this configuration resulted in some of the highest levels of dust in the return and gas on the off-curtain side of the mining face. Two field studies showed some similarities to the laboratory findings, with elevated dust levels at the rear corners of the continuous miner when all the scrubber exhaust was redirected towards the face either up the off-tubing side or equally up both sides of the mining machine.

Zarshuran gold deposit, with the total reserves of some 12.5 million tons of 4.18 g/ton ore, is considered to be an important gold mining project in the area. In this paper the feasibility studies of the whole project is carried out on the basis of several economic variables. Given that mining data are often of uncertain nature, these economic variables have therefore been estimated under the conditions of uncertainty. The resultant Net Present Value is hence also obtained under the same conditions. For this purpose, a model is first devised with the help of Excel and COMFAR software. The model is then developed that considers different scenarios which would result in different expected values for the economic variables. It is concluded that the NPV of the project is most sensitive to gold and silver price and that other variables such as discount rate, operating and capital cost all affect the feasibility of the project with lower degree of severity. Finally, risk analysis is also carried out using Mont Carlo technique, in order to estimate the most probable value of NPV. The average NPV calculated in this way is US$ 49.7 Million, whilst without due consideration of risk, this would be US$ 36.6 Million. The techniques used, together with the procedures adopted in this paper, can be used in feasibility studies of all mining projects. Such decision would result in more accurate Net Present Values than expected from other frequently used methods.

25.1-THE PURCHASING FUNCTION The word "purchase" means "to obtain by paying money or its equivalent; to buy for a price." This definition is all too simple to properly describe the word "purchase." One should consider the basic objectives of purchasing-to procure the right material, of the right quality, in the right quantity, at the right time, from the right source at the right price. Here it should be noted that in purchasing it is recognized that the best quality or grade of materials may be the only grade to purchase for a specific job. However. there are other jobs where the medium, standard or poor grade of materials is the right quality, as the lesser grade will perform adequately. In some companies the purchasing department makes the decision as to the right quality, while in others this function is shared with other departments. Years ago in business the owners controlled the purchase of required materials and services by performing the task themselves. The owners obtained the type materials and services they needed and paid the price demanded. This function was performed along with all the other duties requisite to the owner of a business, namely, clerical, hiring and firing of personnel, financial management, etc. As companies grew in size, clerical duties were assigned to other personnel and the owner usually retained the purchasing authority. This same division exists today in many small companies. However, in the larger companies, the purchasing function has been assigned to a separate department. Importance of the Purchasing Function-The larger the company the greater the need for a separate department to perform the purchasing function. Today the purchasing agent for most larger progressive companies has policy-making authority. Therefore, it is reasonable for him to report to the president or vice president of his company. Studies of several hundred companies show the purchasing department head reporting to top management 87.5% of the time. This fact in itself is indicative of the importance of recognizing that effective purchasing requires a department staffed with specialists in the field of procurement with knowledge and experience sufficient to perform in today's complicated business atmosphere. In the manufacturing field it is a common axiom that usually half of the company's dollar expenditures are for materials. If a purchasing department functions properly and the right product or service is purchased and a savings accomplished, the contribution to the net profit of the company is much greater, as opposed to sale dollars, where only a small portion is carried forward to net profit. Thus, the importance of the purchasing department and the contribution it can make to the success of the company are obvious. 25.1.1-THE PURCHASING FUNCTION 1. In Novemeber of last year I visited a mica mine in Hunan Province, China. For nine months , we had been trying to sell Chinese mica to a customer in Belgium. Talking to the customer was like negotitating with a stone wall. The buyer refused to communicate any -thing other than his steadfast refusal to consider Chinese mica. He would not advise us what he wanted, what specifications or grades. He would give no indication if our price at market, or reasonable, or totally out to lunch. He would not even accept samples. It took no genius to guess that the mica buyer had at some time in the past bought a shipment of Chinese mica and had received a disaster. I invited the mica mine in Hunan in order to see for myself what could be done - without massive investment in equipment and instruments - to upgrade the quality of the mica for export. We had seen this type of customer reaction before. One disgruntled customer who had pur¬chased pigment grade barites direct from China ranted and raved about unreliable and inconsistent quality. It did no good to explain to him that China is a big country, with hundreds of mines scattered throughout many areas, each producing a different product. Our further explanation that Chinese export organizations also varied in degree and efficiency of customer service fell on deaf ears. Samples had no effect on his perception. Eventually we showed him photoraphs of two mountains of pigment grade barites. One lot was our sales of pigment barites to a major European minerals processor. Our Chinese barites stood proudly white and beautiful next to a hill of other material which now appeared at best mediocre and dull by comparison, and which the buyer had decided to reject after he received our Chinese barites. Finally the customer was sufficiently impressed to look seriously at our guaranteed specification and the outturn analysis performed by our other customer.

For 10 years, the author has been engaged in a program of geologic mapping of the Seward Peninsula, Alaska, for the U.S. Geological Survey. Initially, two 1:63,360-scale quadrangles were napped by traditional methods of traverses by foot and by tracked vehicle, supplemented by reconnaissance from a light aircraft owned and piloted by the author. Five summers were required to map those two quadrangles, which lie north of the tree lice in typical Arctic climate. In 1967, the project was reoriented toward the reconnaissance capping of four 1:250,000-scale quadrangles, with helicopter support to be used for cart of each of four summers amounting to about 45 hours time per support year. The light aircraft was use-,' to support the field operations. Over the year,, the aircraft was used in progressively more geologic tasks, culminating in 1970 with a successful field test of rudimentary devices made to collect soil, rock, and sediment samples while the aircraft remained airborne. Additionally, an attempt was made j- 1970 to prepare reconnaissance geologic maps entirely by the use of the light aircraft combined with foot traverses [fr??], the landed aircraft. Several such maps, prepared at the rate of about one 1:63,360-scale quadrangle per day, were checked from a helicopter by an impartial observer end were found to be sufficiently accurate for reconnaissance mapping when reduced to 1:250.000 scale.

The movement of solids by pipeline is an art dating back well over 100 years as evidenced by many references in the literature. Even though all of the early pipeline transport systems were based on trial and error and relied mainly upon the designer's experience, hydraulic transport offered distinct advantages in convenience or cost for the chemical, mining, and civil engineering industries. It became well established for in-plant process lines, dredging, waste disposal, and other uses almost exclusively for short distances. During more recent times, much research work has been done in an attempt to understand the underlying principles involved in transporting solids in a fluid. Design criteria for pumping slurries have evolved to the point where pipelines designed for distances of several miles to several hundred miles can be accomplished successfully. Consolidation Coal Company designed and built a 10-inch diameter 108-mile long line1 for transporting coal in the 1950's and operated it from 1957 to 1963 when it was placed in mothballs because of falling freight rates for rail shipment. More recently, the 273-mile Black Mesa Pipeline2 was built and is operating. There are other examples of long distance pipelines,3 but all are for specially prepared fine slurries which allow the pipeline to be operated more economically.

Spray drying is the principal drying method used in the production of over six million tons annually of beneficiated kaolin in Georgia. Thirty-three dryers in the Georgia Kaolin belt comprise the highest concentration of large tonnage spray dryers in the world. The steady growth of spray drying in the U.S. kaolin industry is paced by advances in design and development of large spray dryers which have led to large scale new applications in mining and related industries.

Considerable attention has been given to the restoration of low-level radioactive (<1000 pCl/g) sites contaminated during the early years of the atomic energy program. Current clean-up activities which involve the relocation of contaminated soils to licensed disposal sites have been shown to be very costly due to the large volumes of soils which must be excavated, transported and stored. Recent characterization studies conducted at Virginia Tech suggest that the volume of soil requiring disposal can be greatly reduced using mineral processing techniques such as classification, density separation and froth flotation. This article discusses the application of these technologies for soil remediation and describes a conceptual flowsheet for treating soil samples from two contaminated sites.

"Horizontal stress can have a profound effect on the stability of an underground limestone mine. The presence of horizontal stress is usually determined once the mine has been developed and the orientation of headers and crosscuts are well established. Multiple attempts are typically made to control roof falls without re-orienting the mine. Once the decision has been made to change the orientation, pillar centers, mine opening widths, and the question of how to determine the correct orientation must be answered.A case history is presented to illustrate how geologic structure, ground conditions and roof falls in adjacent mines, the World Stress Map (Heidbach et al., 2016), in-mine measurement of “cutter” roof orientation, the orientation of strata offset (cats eyes) within borescope holes, and the diametral deviation method of determining horizontal strain from drill core were used to establish the most likely range of horizontal stress.The main headers were re-orientated in a direction parallel to the median of the range of horizontal stress. The crosscuts were angled 60° to the headers to avoid being perpendicular to the horizontal stress direction. Pillar centers and opening widths were increased in the favorable stress direction of the mains and decreased in the less favorable crosscut orientation. The major principal horizontal stress magnitude was estimated using the strain measurements from the diametral deviation method and elastic modulus obtained through testing.INTRODUCTIONOver the past decade, there has been a significant increase in the number of underground stone mining operations in the United States. As stripping ratios at surface quarries become uneconomical and reach the extent of the mineral boundary, coupled with the encroachment of urban development on previously rural mining operations, the remaining mine reserves are best accessed through underground development.Although the majority of underground limestone mines in the Midwest are in relatively flat lying deposits with minimal geologic structure, many Appalachian mines are in folded and faulted environments. Tectonic horizontal stresses associated with multiple orogenic episodes are locked in the formation and are released as the underground mine is developed.A common misconception is that horizontal stress impacts are more prevalent at shallow depths where the ratio of horizontal to vertical stress may be high. However, field observations and academic research indicates that horizontal stress conditions may be encountered at any depth due to the tectonic compression of the limestone formation (Esterhuizen et al., 2007; Dolinar and Esterhuizen, 2007; Iannacchione et al., 2003; Slaker, Murphy, and Miller, 2017; Kuhnhein and Ramer, 2004). This paper outlines mine design and layout guidelines for the mitigation of horizontal stress impacts on underground stone mining operations through a case history example. This approach to mine planning and the ability to anticipate horizontal stress can significantly improve future production of multiple levels (Newman and Newman, 2019). As underground stone production continues at deeper depths and in more geologically and geometrically complex mining conditions, an emphasis on ground control and the anticipation of horizontal stress can provide safer and more productive single and multiple level mining operations."

Tunnel contracts often include provisions for pre-excavation probing and grouting for areas ahead of the tunnel heading. If grouting triggers are met, tunneling stops, and grouting is performed. There is substantial variation within the underground industry on what criteria are applied to the grout verification hole that is drilled post-grouting and before excavation resumes. The criteria for determination of the effectiveness should be dependent on the geology and local hydrogeologic conditions. The purpose of this paper is to present specific criteria that can be used by a practitioner to determine whether tunneling can resume or if additional grouting is required.

Responsible mining requires stakeholder engagement throughout all operational stages and after mine closure. By assessing the current and anticipated future socio-economic and environmental impacts, a company can maximise the positive impacts they can have on a community, whilst minimising any negative impacts. Despite the current emphasis on companies maintaining effective stakeholder relations to gain their ‘social license’ to operate, findings of the present study reveal a wide variation in community expectations, with different degrees of ‘acceptability’ evident across seven sites in Romania (Rosia Montana), Sweden (Kristineberg), the United Kingdom (Cornwall), Bosnia Herzegovina (Vihovici) and Russia (Karabash, Gay and Mednogorsk). These variations reflect the current status of mining within a community, as well as its socio-economic background and the nature of existing engagement with mining companies already operating in the region.

This paper examines the desired blast fragmentation results associated with mining fleet performance at Sidney Quarry of Pike Industries, A CRH Company by reducing cycle times and hauling less oversize material generated from the blast to the crusher to increase the overall plant throughput. We are constrained with blast patterns due to the poorly sorted and fractured seams in the quarry, which is angled at 35° NE and dipping at 80° and runs parallel to the Interstate-95 highway on the east of the quarry boundary about 600 ft, making it challenging to alter the blast patterns for optimal yield. We evaluated multiple relationships between blast patterns in conjunction with loader diggability. Results analyzed include the digging hours, fleet cycle times, and the fragment size with the optimized blast design through 3GSM software to arrive at the optimal yield to maximize the crusher throughput. Our primary objective is to focus on safety with efficient cycle times and clean floors & clean face generation for better operational efficiencies. Secondly, to optimize the crusher yield which is an integral part of quarry operation. Further, this paper provides the utilization of 3GSM blasting techniques in quarry applications with computer vision fragmentation analysis and VizaLogix, a fleet management software to analyze the cycle times sampling.

Oregon Resources Corporation (ORC), an industrial minerals mining company, is currently engaged in the development of a new process design that will allow the unique paleo-beach placer deposits of southwestern Oregon to be mined efficiently and economically, creating an additional domestic source for chromite, garnet, and zircon. Engineering design has been guided by the variable geology and mineralogy of the paleo-beach placer deposits as well as the need for a dry tailing scheme that resolves a lack of water resources at the placer locations and at the same time eliminates the need for slurry settling ponds, typical of paleo-beach placer operations in North America. Metallurgical study of the placer material was grouped into four distinct samples based on marine terrace deposition, geological facies, and mineralogy. Because the metallurgical samples represented the extremes likely to be encountered in all future Oregon paleo-beach placer ores, the process design is highly dynamic and will successfully adjust to meet the production needs. Water availability at the mining area is seasonal and will not support a typical placer operation?s water requirement needs for heavy mineral concentration. For this reason, ORC has developed a plan to construct the ore processing facilities near Coos Bay, where a municipal source of water is available. Raw ore will be transported from the mining sites approximately twenty miles one way to the processing facility with return loads hauling tailings back to the active pit. The need to haul dry tailings, return dry material to the pit for reclamation, and limit the amount of water being purchased from the municipality has driven the design of a unique water reclamation system. BACKGROUND Location and Access Economic concentrations of ?black sand? or heavy mineral (minerals with specific gravity greater than 2.85) have been recognized and studied in marine placers from Coos Bay to the mouth of the Rogue River, a distance of approximately 75 miles along the southern Oregon coast (Hornor, 1918; Griggs, 1945)(Figure 1). ORC will begin mining existing reserves approximately 20 miles south of Coos Bay in a region known locally as Seven Devils. Ore will be trucked north to the processing site near Coos Bay via use of existing county and state roads, including U.S. 101. The available facilities at the processing site include highway, rail, municipal water and electricity, natural gas, and a deep water port. At the time of this writing, the rail line had been abandoned, but was being pursued by the International Port of Coos Bay. It is anticipated that this will be serviceable at some time in the future. History The southern Oregon marine placers have garnered the interests of miners since 1852, when present day beaches were exploited for gold. The beach deposits were small and irregular in nature and were easily washed away by the major storms the coast endures during the winter months (Hornor, 1918). [ ] In the 1920?s, deposits at the beach were followed upstream to their paleo-beach terrace origins (Pardee, 1934). These terrace placers were mined, but with little success, as the cost of mining and processing was greater than at the present day beach deposits. The greatest effort to understand and delineate the paleo-beach terrace placers came during World War II. As the need for a domestic source of steel hardening chromite was evident, the heavy mineral bearing placers of southwestern Oregon provided just that. The U.S. Geological Survey, under guidance from the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries, began exploration drilling of the paleo-beach terraces in 1940 (Griggs, 1945). This work was part of the investigation of strategic mineral deposits and would ultimately supply much needed chromite for the war efforts. "Rapid population growth and scarcity of space have led many developed cities to bury supply facilities. In line with this, utility tunnels have been employed in Korea since the 1970s. However, approximately 70% of structures were installed more than 20 years ago, in response to the issue of ageing, tunnel enlargement has been proposed. The aim of this study is to investigate geo-mechanical behavior due to tunnel enlargement. Tunnel enlargement methods have been researched to suggest a optimal method. A finite element analysis is conducted to evaluate ground behavior by the expansion of internal space. Vertical displacement and settlement trough width are investigated according to ground stiffness and different enlargement size. It was determined that displacement is affected by the enlargement size and ground stiffness. Based on the deformation results obtained from the numerical analysis, it is possible to predict ground behavior and stability upon tunnel enlargement. INTRODUCTION Various infrastructures such as electric lines, communication lines, gas pipes, and water pipes are jointly accommodated by utility tunnels. These utility tunnels improve the aesthetics of urban areas and help ensure stable supply. The first utility tunnel in Korea was adopted in 1978 and new tunnels are still being installed with the development of new suburb cities. Nevertheless, about 70% of the utility tunnels were installed over 20 years ago and they are still being used through ongoing repair. Moreover, 90% of utility tunnels were installed before 1995. With aging of the nation’s utility tunnels various problems such as concrete deterioration and scarcity of capacity have arisen. As solution, reconstruction has been considered. Reconstruction can enlarge space and improve the performance by replacing existing structures. For reconstruction, two routes have been proposed: underground excavation and cut and cover. In order to avoid traffic problems caused by road occupation and civil appeals during construction projects, underground excavation is the more attractive option. Tunnel enlargement methods have been classified (Seo et al., 2008; An et al 2013) and major considerations during tunnel enlargement have been outlined (Beak et al., 2007). Enlargement construction cases on road tunnels around the world were introduced (Kim et al., 2012) and the deformation curve during tunnel expansion was proposed to investigate the range of protection that should be offered (Kim et al., 2008; Beak et al., 2011). However, tunnel enlargement technology is limited to road tunnels and railway tunnels. Hence, a study on shallow box tunnel enlargement is required for practical application."

Draglines are the main energy consumers in strip mines. Given the growing cost of energy and environmental concerns, it is important to properly understand dragline energy efficiency. The goal of current research at Missouri University of Science & Technology is to account for operator practice and operating conditions in modeling dragline energy efficiency. This paper presents preliminary correlation analysis and a framework for stochastic modeling of dragline energy efficiency. Thirteen operating parameters (including cycle times, payload, swing angle, and height of dump pile), operator working schedules, operating conditions, and drag, hoist, and swing energies were monitored for an 85 yd3 dragline. Operator effects were examined by two-sample t-tests. The relation between the parameters and energy consumption were assessed by correlation analysis and a stochastic modeling framework has been proposed for dragline energy efficiency. The results show that operator effects are significant (p< 0.05) and energy efficiency is correlated with operating parameters. The completed model will help the coal mines better predict energy consumption, with uncertainty, for different operating conditions.

"In 2016, the estimated value of total nonfuel mineral production in the United States was $74.6 billion, a slight increase from the revised total of $73.4 billion in 2015 (Table 1). Increased construction activity spurred increased production of industrial minerals, especially those used in infrastructure and residential construction. Although starting the year relatively low, prices for several metals, especially for some of the precious metals, began to trend upward. Decreased production of most metals produced in the United States, however, contributed to an overall decline in the value of metal production.Several U.S. metal mines and processing facilities were idled or closed permanently in 2016, including iron ore mines in Michigan and Minnesota; three primary aluminum smelters in Indiana, Missouri and Washington; one secondary zinc smelter in North Carolina; a titanium sponge facility in Utah and titanium mineral operations in Virginia. In addition, in May, the weekly average rig count for oil and gas drilling reached its lowest level since the 1940s when that measurement was first recorded. The reduced drilling activity resulted in decreased production of some industrial mineral products used in the drilling sector.
