A nearly 305-m- (1,000-ft-) wide sandstone channel was projected to run through the mid panel area of a 457-m- (1,500-ft-) wide longwall panel in a southwestern Pennsylvania coal mine. This sandstone channel was known to cause serious longwallface roof control problems in the mine?s B-panel area in 1998 and 1999; and most recently, it induced many large face cavities and caused a substantial production delay in the preceding panel. For the two B panels mined in 1998 and 1999, hydraulic fracturing of the massive sandstone was conducted to facilitate better caving, thus relieving cantilever compressive stress at the longwall face. Vastly improved longwall face condition was observed and four weeks of mining delay due to bad roof conditions were eliminated. The implementation of the hydraulic fracturing technique, results of underground observation and measurement, and results of numerical modeling were summarized in a paper presented in the 20th International Conference on Ground Control (Su et al., 2001). This article is a summary of the activities that took place during a four-month period (October 2011 through February 2012) at a Consol Energy longwall mine southwestern Pennsylvania to improve face conditions and safety of underground personnel during mining of the 457-m- (1,500-ft-) wide longwall panel. The elevated concern for safety was driven by adverse face conditions encountered while mining the preceding longwall panel. Many of the problems were attributed to a thick and massive sandstone channel. A joint task force consisting of coal operations engineering, Pennsylvania operations engineering and CNX Gas personnel was formed in August 2011, which recommended drilling four hydraulic fracturing holes along the center axis of the sandstone channel to reduce pressure and improve face conditions at the longwall face. Using powerful database management software, nested-field analysis and microanalysis of narratives have been made of West Virginia accident data, resulting in a new approach for targeting and prioritizing safety interventions by county, mine size, specific mine, job title, type injury, etc. and combinations of these parameters. The analyses have been useful in focusing training and discussion sessions on specific work problems, trends, conditions, and situations for targeted groups of miners. Application of the technique will be presented in this paper, along with comparisons of various mine performance measures.

"INTRODUCTION Mine Ventilation has come a long way over the years. The main purpose of mine ventilation is to keep conditions in the mine safe for the worker so that the mine will be productive and profitable. Technological developments to the mine ventilation system itself and the development of mining techniques have helped improve the safety and productivity of the miners and the mine. Most of the developments to mine ventilation and to safety devices came as the result of serious mining disasters. Another effect of those mining disasters, especially in the late 19th century and after, was legislation to set specific safety standards for mines, especially in the underground coal mines. This paper will focus on the connection between mines disasters and the mine safety legislations promulgated because of those disasters. A BRIEF HISTORY OF MINE SAFETY LEGISLATION Mine legislation has a long history in the U.S. dating back well in the 1800’s. However, mine safety legislation is considerably newer. In 1891, the U.S. Congress passed the very first version of mine safety legislations setting up minimum safety standards. By today’s standards, the 1891 legislation was incredibly basic (7). It took a series of horrific mining disasters for Congress to take action a second time. In 1910, Congress established the Bureau of mines. The role of Bureau developed and changed over next 60 years. In 1995, Congress voted to disband it (27). Initially the Bureau was only charged with investigating and coming up with ways to reduce accidents in coal mines. It was not until 1941, when Congress formally allowed Bureau of Mines’ Inspectors into the mines. In 1947, the Congress enacted and adopted a set of federal safety regulations for the inspectors to follow (1). Finally, in 1952 Congress granted the Bureau of Mines the authority to inspect the mines and to issue citations and/or orders of withdrawals. This act was known as the 1952 Coal Act and the penalties were limited to civil penalties. It would take a couple more iterations of mine safety legislation for monetary and criminal penalties to be introduced (10). Up until 1966, mine safety legislation was directed primarily at underground coal mines and surface coal mines. Congress passed the Federal Metal and Nonmetallic Mine Safety Act of 1966, thus providing a set of standards for all mines to follow (1). The 1952 Coal Act was amended again to be the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969. This amendment was the beginning of modern mine safety legislation (13). In 1973, Congress created what can be considered the first ‘version’ of the modern day MSHA (Mine Safety and Health Administration). The initial version was the Mining Enforcement and Safety Administrations or MESA. Congress created MESA to act as the enforcement agency, relieving the Bureau of Mines of that responsibility so they could focus on their initial purpose, the development of countries natural resources (14). As mining industry grew, mine safety and health became a greater concern and priority. More efforts were put in legislating the industry. The Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977 provided the platform for today’s mine safety and health legislation. Under the Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977, also known as the Mine Act, MSHA came into being (1)."

Based on the mine safety and health administration (MSHA)reports, mining truck accidents are among the significant causes of fatalities in the mining industry. The major causes of haulage accidents can be divided into non-driving and driving factors, such as truck-related sudden failures and operator performance. Numerous parameters affect trucks' safe operation, but situational awareness plays a significant role. Due to the distinct structure of mining trucks, making them efficient for mining purposes, the operator has a very limited field of view (FOV), making them prone to accidents resulting in losing lives. The cabin's position blocks the truck's right and rear sides, creating several blind points around it. Aiming to test/train the operator's awareness of the surrounding, a proximity detection system is developed through a multiplayer virtual reality (VR) application to investigate the human factor in equipment collisions. The operators were examined and monitored when asked to conduct what exactly happened in the Marigold mine truck accident without being aware of the scenario. After receiving sound, vibration, and visual alarm warnings, their reaction and performance were analyzed. The platform is developed using the Unity game engine for HTC VIVE virtual reality goggles. An Omni-direction treadmill and a motion simulator platform are utilized for the player and dump truck operators. Fifteen students were monitored when driving the dump truck receiving/not receiving proximity detection alarms. None of them repeated the accident when receiving proximity alarms. Also, they found the visual alarm the most comfortable while driving the truck.

Extraction and separation of La, Sm and Dy ions from acidic sulfate-phosphate solutions was investigated using a cation exchange extractant, bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl) phosphinic acid, CYANEX 272, in kerosene. The influence of shaking time, equilibrium pH, extractant, sulfate and phosphate ion concentrations, diluent type and temperature was studied. The extraction was found to be pH-dependent, and increasing the phosphate ion concentration inhibited the extraction which was found to be endothermic. The stoichiometry of the extracted metal species was found to be MOH.H2OHSO4H2A.A2. Aliphatic diluents were found to enhance the extraction compared to aromatic diluents. The results showed that there was a separation mode between the metal ions when varying the hydrogen ion and sulfate ion concentrations, under the used experimental conditions. The investigated process was used for the recovery of La, Sm and Dy from the acid solution resulting from the leaching of low-grade monazite.

During the last 10 years there have been many new developments in transport and handling equipment. Important technical and economic developments that can be used to reduce costs are; new terminal and materials handling concepts large river tows - 40,000 tons and 9000 hp towboats slurry loading and unloading of ocean vessels long distance pipelining of solids development of the shuttle train (unit train) large ocean barges ? 25,000+ tons ? pushed & towed 150,000 ton self-unloading super tankers - 300,000+ tons container shipping Some of these developments have been discussed at SME meetings in papers describing the transportation of minerals from new mines. But, only a few papers described improved transportation from older operations. Since transportation is a major part of the delivered cost for minerals, the economic benefits to be gained by putting new transportation developments to work are very substantial. Frequently good transportation planning and management makes the difference between a marginal ore body and a very profitable one.

This article offers an examination of a retreat mining method conducted at the Pinoura Mine in India from 2010 to 2017. The method is atypical for coal mines of India’s coalfields. The method executes depillaring in a single pass and does not require the formation of galleries and support installation in splits, thus, reducing the cycle time. A variety of observations are discussed throughout this work and emphasis is placed on field measurements and depillaring under weak roof (RMR = 40–45). This paper discusses design techniques, specifically the estimation of the snook (remnant pillar) size, and important practical observations after the fact. The execution of this method was eventually conducted in eleven panels.

In the capitalistic system the success of a mining enterprise is measured by the rate of return on the investment and the speed by which its redemption is achieved. Exploration in search of ore deposits often results in the emergence of the lean orebody which does not meet basic company requisites. At this point a decision must be made whether to place the orebody into production or postpone production pending more favourable market conditions. The wisdom of this decision, borne out by future results, demonstrates the quality of a company's management and is instrumental in the degree of financial success it achieves. The project feasibility report must show a rate of return on the capital invested that is attractive to the company, plus its full redemption in the desired period of time, in order to bring the property into production on a sound economic basis. Mining companies have demonstrated their ability to bring the profitability of a marginal property from a point that says "no go" to a point of "go" by substantial reduction of expenditure without adversely affecting production rate or cost. Here is where the real challenge exists for today's mining engineers and plant designers; they will have to develop better ideas and concepts: ideas that will still allow maximum production at reduced capital expenditure, This is the sound way marginal orebodies can be brought into production without inflationary increases in the price of their product.

During the past ten years, the US coal industry has experimented with various ways to extract methane from coal seams. Drilling long horizontal boreholes in solid coal from mine workings and vertical gob degas boreholes are becoming standard techniques for methane recovery from coal seams. Prime motivations for such work have always been safety and productivity in mines, but the commercial value of gas so produced is encouraging utilization. The paper reviews various ways to produce methane from coal seams and discusses some utilization projects extant in the industry.

The development of pelletizing during the last ten years has continued, however, self-fluxing pellets have not been regularly and commercially produced for use in blast furnaces, except as Kobe Steel, Ltd., Japan. This paper tells about unique developments for self-fluxing pellets, and their effects when used in Kobe Steel's No. 3 blast furnace at the Nadahama Works (inner volume 1845 Nm3, hearth diameter 9.5 m)., Several phases of the pelletizing process are discussed individually, and also their relation to performance in blast furnace operation. Special emphasis is placed on proper preparation of the limestone added to the raw materials, and indurating at optimum conditions. Means of improving pellet quality by correct control of size distribution of the raw materials used in pelletizing, and indurating temperatures, are also discussed. As basicity (CaO/SiO2) of pellets increased 0. 1, coke consumption decreased 3. 8 to 4. 2 kg per ton of hot metal, when using 70% pellets in the iron burden.

This paper explores the impact of the significant difference between the number of geochemical assays conducted for grade estimation and the number of comminution tests performed for throughput and performance forecasting. Both grade and throughput are key factors in determining the project. We analysed 154 feasibility study reports to assess the impact of sample frequency for comminution test work on project revenue. This disparity in size between assay and comminution data arises because geological and resource-grade risks cannot be managed without extensive geochemical testing, whereas comminution risks are traditionally mitigated through design methods and the use of contingencies. This approach is partly due to the relatively high cost and large sample requirements associated with traditional comminution tests. Our analysis demonstrates that insufficient comminution sampling and testing leads to uncertainties in throughput forecasts, creating significant financial risks. Data from the feasibility studies show that a 1% change in mill throughput can result in up to a 5% variation in Net Present Value (NPV), underscoring the sensitivity of project economics to operational performance. Building on previous work, we reference studies that reveal how low frequency of comminution testing can increase uncertainty in mill throughput forecasts and increase financial risks. We propose an approach that optimises the number of comminution samples tested to enhance forecast accuracy and reduce NPV variance. By adopting this approach, mining projects can improve financial reliability and mitigate risks associated with underperformance in SAG and AG mill-based operations.

Asbestos crystallizes within rock formations undergoing intense deformation characterized by folding, faulting, shearing, and dilation. Some of these conditions have prevailed during formation of the taconite iron ore deposits in the eastern Mesabi Iron Range of Minnesota. This range includes the Peter Mitchell Taconite Mine at Babbitt, Minnesota. The mine pit is over 8 miles long, up to 1 mile wide. Fifty three samples were collected from 30 sites within areas of the pit where faulting, shearing and folding occur and where fibrous minerals might occur. Eight samples from seven collecting sites contain significant amounts of ferroactinolite amphibole that is partially to completely altered to fibrous ferroactinolite. Two samples from two other sites contain ferroactinolite degraded to ropy masses of fibers consisting mostly of ferrian sepiolite as defined by X-ray diffraction and TEM and SEM X-ray spectral analysis. Samples from five other sites contain unaltered amphiboles, however some of these samples also contain a very small number of fiber bundles composed of mixtures of grunerite, ferroactinolite, and ferrian sepiolite. It is proposed that the alteration of the amphiboles was caused by reaction with water-rich acidic fluids that moved through the mine faults and shear zones. The fibrous amphiboles and ferrian sepiolite collected at the Peter Mitchell Mine composes a tiny fraction of one percent of the total rock mass of this taconite deposit; an even a smaller amount of these mineral fragments enter the ambient air during mining and milling. These fibrous minerals thus do not present a significant health hazard to the miners nor to those non-occupationally exposed. No asbestos of any type was found in the mine pit. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. "Stretching from Norway’s capital, Oslo, to the city of Ski, a new railway line is under construction with a 20 km long hard rock tunnel. This is a major project with high demands regarding quality, cost and schedule. In addition, restrictions concerning locations close to sensitive urban infrastructure require execution with the highest level of precision and expertise. The new double track railway line forms an important part of the intercity rail development southwards from the capital and includes the longest railway tunnel to date in the Nordic countries. With its novel methods and solutions, this project offers a model for future railway project developments in the region. This paper provides general pertinent details and facts relating to this current railway project and includes a description of the project with information relating to concept and design of the tunnels, geological conditions, particular challenges, selected tunneling techniques and contracting strategies. THE FOLLO LINE PROJECT The Follo Line is a new 22 km long double track railway line under construction between Oslo Central Station and the city of Ski. The project is divided into four subprojects, as shown in figure 1. The main part of the project consists of a 20 km long hard-rock tunnel, which will be the longest railway tunnel in the Nordic countries to date.The Østfold Line is the existing double-track railway line running between Oslo Central Station and Ski serving 12 local stations. The new Follo Line will offer a direct service, without stops, between Oslo Central Station and Ski and reduce the travel time from 22 minutes to 11 minutes. After completion of the Follo Line, these two railway lines will, in combination, more than double the capacity for train transport in the region south-east of Oslo."

In a shearer longwall mining operation, the longwall bits are responsible for breaking into and chip-ping the broken coal blocks away from the coal face. However, underground observations have found that a large number of longwall bits are always working under various degrees of wear. Reduction of the bit wear could be realized by using better designed longwall bits and properly selected shearer operating parameters. A computer program has been developed to simulate the performance of the longwall bits. The shape of the bit head, the installation of the bits on the drum and the operation parameters are the information required by the program. Through the simulations, the main factors affecting the bit wearing process are identified. Suggestions are also made for improving the design of the longwall bits.

With more than 20 major mines extracting copper, gold, coal, molybdenum and lime, Arizona is recognized as one of the better mining jurisdictions, not just in the United States, but in the world. However, that is not to say the road to production is always paved with gold, or in many cases, copper. Earning the license to mine in Arizona is a complex process with years of paperwork and permitting before the first tons of ore are ever processed. Now, get the federal government involved and the process becomes even more complex, and the path to production can become even longer.
