This Information Circular describes the development of block-caving methods and practices by the Miami Copper Co. at the Miami mine in Gila County, Arizona. It is one of a series published by the Bureau of Mines on mining methods, practices, and costs in various mining districts of the United States. This report gives a history of the district and outlines early prospecting and exploration including methods of sampling and estimation of ore tonnage and value at the Miami mine. Early mining methods are described, particularly those that influenced developments in the caving method. Mine exploration, development, and operating methods for block caving are described with particular attention to those factors, physical, economic, engineering, and managerial that have improved efficiency in the mining operations over a long productive period. Extraction, ventilation, wage system, safety, water supply, power plant, and shop facilities are discussed. The last section gives a brief summary of such costs as are available for publication.

Indian iron ores with less than 62 per cent Fe are currently unexploited, except for a few sectors which export them to foreign countries. It is anticipated that by 2012 the countryÆs domestic steel production is likely to rise to the tune of 60 million tonnes per annum. To meet this requirement, it is necessary to utilise not only the existing high-grade deposits but it is also necessary to look into exploiting the leftover iron ores of lower grades. Hence, reserves with Fe content 62 per cent and below (particularly the ores with In the present paper, an attempt has been made to beneficiate three different types of low-grade iron ores selected from three different parts (states) of the country. In the paper, alternative routes for beneficiation and effective utilisation have been tested using different techniques in the laboratory in an attempt to match their (Al2O3/SiO2) ratio after thorough characterisation and liberation studies. The paper also encompasses the geological formations, occurrences and distribution of Indian iron ores as well as highlighting the problems associated with the fines, possible metallurgical routes, and their market segregation from the perspective of end users.

It is with great pleasure that we announce the availability of this fifth issue of the IPMI Journal, a publication of the International Precious Metals Educational and Scientific Foundation. This digital peer reviewed publication has been created as a vehicle for the sharing of technical information related to the science and technology of precious metals. Since 1976, the International Precious Metals Institute has championed the exchange of information of critical importance to the precious metals scientific and commercial communities through its various communications vehicles. This has included instructional videos, annual conference symposia, special topic committee meetings, regional seminars, and professional and student achievement awards. Due to the breadth of important topics related to all aspects of precious metals, it has been the vision of the IPMI to provide a publication available to the general public that would become a key source of pertinent topics containing high quality publications by experts in their fields of study. Historically, the IPMI has attracted world renowned experts in many fields (including Nobel Laureates Henry Taube, Ei-ishi Negishi, Robert Grubs, Professor Ben Feringa, and David MacMillan) in the dissemination of discoveries, inventions, and industry proven practices. Such information has a total value greater than the sum of its parts as seemingly unrelated innovations from distinct focus areas can be adapted to solve problems. Because of this important characteristic of information exchange, we have decided to create a digital journal, available to the general public, that will not only communicate state of the art discoveries and sound practices, but will also review historical communications from the IPMI’s archives that have value and use even in today’s environment.

Safety and cost in mining coal beds under the extreme pressures found at depth, full extraction to conserve resources, and even surface subsidence to minimize damage of improved areas have directed much well-deserved attention, in the United Kingdom; to roof-control methods. Because the effects of pressure will be felt intensely as our Pennsylvania anthracite mines grow deeper, the senior author took advantage of an opportunity afforded by a mission to Europe3/ to observe, to a limited extent, the effects of pressures found in deep mines and the manner in which they are con trolled. Organized research relating to strata control has been carried on in Great Britain for nearly 25 years. These activities have been ably outlined by Dr. D. W. Phillips.4/ Physical properties of coal-measure rocks, movements of roof and floor, and types of face and roadway supports have been investigated. Same of the forces induced by the extraction of coal have been measured. The results of this research have been publicized and openly discussed, and much progress has been made in establishing a better factual understanding of roof-control problems and their solution.

1N THIS PAPER, the writer proposes to limit his comments to few generalized phases of the subject, based on his personal experience in the midwestern United 'States and in one section .of the Coal Branch in Western Alberta. The following statistics are submitted to show the importance that strip mining has assumed in the coal mining industry of the United States. In 1914, 1,281,000 tons of strip coal were produced, amounting to 0.3 per cent of the total production. In 1948, the total was 13~,505,000 tons, representing 23.3 per cent. In 1949, the percentage figure dropped slightly and this can be partially accounted for by the labour disturbances prevalent throughout the year. In 1914, there were 48 power shovels and draglines being used in the stripping of coal; in 1949 there were 3,712, not to mention other types of coal stripping equipment such as bulldozers, tractors and scrapers, rotary excavators, and stackers. At the bituminous coal mines in Western Canada, strip mining was introduced only a few years ago, two of the major reasons for its development being the need for increased production during the war and post-war years and the need to hold the line on increasing production costs, but even in these few years the percentage of strip production has in-creased to such an extent that some mines that, five or six years ago, were producing all their tonnage from underground operations are today obtaining up to 80 per cent of their total output from strip mines.

Declining gold grades, mineralogical complexity of ore bodies, increasing input costs, more stringent conditions in the licenses to operate, and uncertain gold price dynamics combine to exert significant ongoing pressure on margins of gold producers. Innovative approaches of extracting the metal from its ores are required to realize value from existing and future assets. In a conventional gold processing plant, size reduction of mined ore to produce floatable or leachable product is a significant cost contributor. A step change in cost reduction will be attained if radically energy efficient grinding approaches can be developed, replacing tumbling mills. In the path towards that goal, some quick wins are possible through waste rejection before grinding, and pre-treatment of mill feed to reduce grinding energy demands. Gold locked in complex mineralizations puts pressure on margins by increasing cost per oz (typically high $/t and low metal recoveries) in the hydrometallurgical steps. Gold miners are primarily price takers. The current narrow range of gold uses (predominantly investment and jewellery) is not an entirely desirable state. Some diversification into commercial uses would potentially be a price stabilizer. In this paper, promising research directions, some not always fully explored in the gold metallurgy research space, are highlighted to stimulate radical innovation for substantial value enhancements. The author strongly believes a shift from a traditionally conservative and incremental innovation approach to a more aggressive one, across all aspects of the gold metallurgy value stream (processes to products), is what the industry needs. Extensive thick lignite apparently lies within 250 feet of the land surface in Dyer, Lake, Lauderdale, Obion and Tipton counties. Information on geology, land use, soils, groundwater and instability is compiled, along with a bibliography. A test and monitoring site was investigated at Fort Pillow Prison in Lauderdale County. Analyses were made of lignite, overburden, associated water and leachate. Lignite has high BTU (about 7800) and low sulfur (1.1% avg.). A year or more of data are presented on rainfall, water levels, and chemistry of surface water, groundwater, leachate and water from test pits. Main potential environmental problems are quality of surface water, and possibly shallow groundwater. The main aquifer of the region will likely be un-affected by mining. Low transmissibility of shallow aquifers will minimize lowering water levels of wells. Soil reclamation and conservation should be readily accomplished, Dangerous earthquakes have a low probability and mines are not significantly more hazardous than steep bluffs.

On St. Thomas and St. Croix, and possibly also on St. John, low-quality red-burning clays probably can be developed to provide the major part of the raw materials for structural clay products and earthenware pottery. 2. The potential sales volume for structural clay products is too small to sustain a plant in the Virgin Islands to manufacture such products in competition with Puerto Rico; however, handmade patio tile might be produced successfully. 3. The market for pottery utility wares in the Virgin Islands is too small to justify a plant devoted solely to the production of such wares; but it may be feasible to evolve a diversified community activity to make jugs, pots, casseroles, bowls, charcoal burners, patio tile, and other items.

The Crandon deposit, located in northern Wisconsin, is a 65.8 million ton Precambrian volcanogenic massive sulfide deposit which averages 1.4% copper and 5.8% zinc. The deposit is classic in origin, mineralogy and shape. Comprehensive understanding of the geology of both the deposit and the project site has been fundamental to the credibility and success of project feasibility studies and regulatory permit preparation. Mine development in the current investment and regulatory climate requires thorough and timely application of geologic tools. From 1977-1980 geologic activities were focused on the typical objectives of orebody delineation, reserve estimation, depositional geology, and general site investigation. Results from these programs formed the basis for the project's preliminary feasibility studies. Since 1981 further geologic investigations have provided criteria for project design, site management, and operational permitting. Activities have included mine entry position definition drilling, devel reserve modeling, large diameter (150 mm) core drilling for mill pilot samples, rock mechanics testing, and evaluation of the glacial overburden/deposit geohydrology for computer simulation.

THE Mackenzie River Valley proper extends from Great Slave lake to the Arctic ocean (see map, Figure 1). From Fort Providence, near Great Slave lake, to Aklavik, near the Arctic coast, the distance by river is 1,000 miles. This will give some idea of the extent of the region. Throughout the length of the river valley, the Precambrian complex rocks are overlain by unaltered sedimentary rocks several thousand feet in thickness. These sediments are dominantly marine and Palaeozoic in age. In places, the Palaeozoic strata are overlain unconformable by Cretaceous an Tertiary sediments. The strata have been folded and, in general, the inclination of the beds to the horizontal is comparatively gentle. Here, then, we have the essentials for potential oil fields covering an area over 1,000 miles in length. This is probably the largest comparatively unexplored potential petroleum region in North America, and surface evidences of oil in the form of seepages occur in several places. Many of these seeps were known to the early explorers, and the first Geological Survey report on the Mackenzie River region, containing the results of field work carried out by R. G. McConnell in 1887-88, noted the petroliferous character of the Devonian strata and the indications of petroleum(l). This region is, however, handicapped by distance from markets and sources of supply of materials; by lack of modern transport facilities; by short season for river transport, and mountainous country separating the valley from the Pacific seaboard; and by the long winter season with weather that makes outdoor work difficult. These factors have tended to discourage the enthusiasm of would-be promoters, and so development in this region has been slow In 1920, a test well drilled about fifty miles northwest of Fort Norman discovered oil in commercial quantity, and three additional wells proved a small area to be productive.

To improve communication among Government, industry, and academic researchers in the field of thermodynamics, the Federal Bureau of Mines sponsored a Workshop on Techniques for Measurement of Thermodynamic Properties in August 1979. Participants at the workshop presented 33 papers on the subjects of temperature measurement and control, general calorimetric techniques, low-temperature calorimetry, high-temperature calorimetry, galvanic cells, ionic solutions, and heterogeneous phase equilibria. A special invited lecture was presented by E. F. Westrum, Jr., on the resolution of lattice heat capacity. This Information Circular comprises the proceedings of the workshop and includes the texts of papers presented and discussion by attendees.

DURING the past few years the amazing developments of the chemical industry have inspired so much publicity that the feature writers assure us that we are entering a "Chemical Age," industrially as important as the "Steel Age" and the "Electric Age," so-called. Whether or not these assurances are overstatements, it is a fact that the expansion of the chemical industry during the past 25 years has been enormous. The Chemical Bureau of the War Production Board calculates the value of chemicals produced during 1944 at $8,300,000,000, no small sum even in inflated dollars. As concerns us of the Southwest oil and gas country, four significant trends of the chemical industry are most important. (1) Many of the recently developed chemical products are new creations, not substitutes,. as new and original as the invention of the light bulb, and with a field for exploitation almost as wide. (2) Many of these chemical products will enter the mass consuming markets, which require enormous tonnages of products, and such markets are setting up an industrial demand for chemicals on a mass volume basis, compared to the relatively high-priced low-volume basis ordinarily considered as the chemical outlet of the past. In this paper the relative merits of shot peening, induction surface hardening, spiral-rolling, and the combination of these surface treatments, are evaluated on the basis of their capacity to increase the fatigue strength of drill steel. The S-N relations for plain car-bon steel (SAE 1080) and Ni-Cr-Mo drill steels in the as-rolled condition were determined previously, using the new Canadian method of testing drill steel introduced at the annual meeting of the Institute in Toronto in 1950 (19). S-N curves have now been determined by this method for these two drill steels in the following conditions: shot-peened and drawn, induction hardened, induction hardened and shot-peened, and spiral-rolled. ( S.R.) . The ratios of the fatigue strengths of these steels after surface treatment, to their fatigue strengths in the as-rolled condition, are compared and the most beneficial treatments are thereby pointed out. The expected range of stresses and their distribution during actual drilling operations are estimated from data available, and the mechanism of failure of drill steel in the as-rolled and surface-treated conditions is analyzed. The magnitude of the surface compression stresses and their effect on ?fatigue strength are discussed.

Laboratory research has demonstrated that high - grade copper powders can be produced under controlled conditions from cement copper products . The technique should enable small producers to prepare a directly marketable product by means other than smelting and electrolytic purification . A continuous drum- type precipitator was the preferred unit for producing fine - sized particles of cement copper that were further processed by chemical digestion in a copper sulfate solution , by reduction and sintering in a hydrogen atmosphere , and by grinding to a powder . The effects of variables related to all stages of the process were investigated . Treatment of leach solutions from three different sources resulted in copper powders containing 99.2 to 99.8 pct Cu , apparent densities of 1.97 to 2.25 grams per cu cm , good powder flow rates , and a size distribution of 54.9 to 60.1 pct minus 325 - mesh material .

Aluminum is produced by the Hall-Héroult process, which involves passing a current through a molten mixture of alumina dissolved in cryolite (Na3AlF6) to reduce the alumina to aluminum. This process occurs in an electrolytic cell comprising a steel shell lined with a carbon cathode and refractory bricks. After a certain period of operation, the carbon cathode deteriorates and is removed from the cell along with the refractory bricks. These removed materials are referred to as spent pot lining or ?SPL?. Typically, 30 Kg of SPL waste is generated for every ton of Aluminum produced. Globally aluminum smelters produce more than 500,000 tons of SPL each year. Even though SPL has a high fuel value (8000 to 9000 BTU/lb) and contains valuable metals, it is classified as a hazardous material due to its cyanide content and leachable fluorides. Various disposal/recycle techniques have been developed over the years for SPL but none of them is satisfactory. Thus, large quantities of SPL are still being dumped in landfills. In some countries, even the land filling of SPL is not permitted. The safe disposal of SPL thus remains a challenging problem to the aluminum industry and the search continues to find methods of converting SPL into a non-hazardous waste and/or recovering the valuable materials contained in the SPL. We have developed a process to produce hydraulic setting cements (eco-cement) containing a novel fluoride rich cementitious phase, from SPL by an energy efficient, low temperature clinkering route. A raw mix blend of SPL, lime/limestone, calcium sulfate and tailings sands based on a set of design criteria developed by us, is clinkered in a two stage process; 2 hours soak at 800 °C followed by clinkering at 1000 °C for another 2 hours, to produce a soft clinker. The SPL eco-cement is made by grinding the clinker to a fineness of 5000 cm2/g Blaine with 1% by weight borax as a set retarder. A good quality cement having as high as 20 % by weight of SPL in the raw mix (28 % by weight in the cement clinker) is thus produced. The physical properties of the SPL cements are found to be comparable to the Indian standard (IS) specifications for Ordinary Portland Cements (OPC). We have produced the cement in a few Kg batches and tested the reproducibility of results from batch to batch for further scale up. PURSUANT to a recommendation made by the Section delegates at their conference at the Annual Meeting of the A.I.M.E. last February, the Directors, at their meeting on March 15, 1944, appointed a committee charged with the duty of investigating the present status of licensing and registration of engineers, and to make a report on the whole subject for the information of the mining fraternity. The committee consisted of E. W. Ellis, chairman, H. D. Keiser, Henry T. Mudd, J. J. Croston, and Simon Strauss. Messrs. Keiser and Strauss were unable to assist in the work of the committee, and Mr. Mudd was forced to resign in July, his place being taken by A. F. Greaves-Walker. Able assistance was given the committee by T. Keith Legare, executive secretary of the National Council of State Boards of Engineering Examiners, and by Ed. ward Larson, executive secretary of the National Society of Professional Engineers. The accompanying somewhat condensed version of the report of Mr. Ellis's committee, dated Oct. 15, 1944, is confined to facts rather than to recommendations. The "Model Law" to which reference is made was first drafted by repre¬sentatives of six national engineering societies in 1911. It has since been amended many times, the latest version dated June 1943 is recommended to the State Licensing Boards as a pattern for formulating or amending state laws. The information age has arrived. In every aspect of life, at the end of the second millennium, computers and information technology have made significant inroads. In mining there has been huge growth in the use of digitally controlled systems. From resource evaluation to mine planning to daily operations, information is being acquired, analysed, modeled and presented, using state-of-the-art information technology. Explosives, too, have moved into the information age. Computer controlled trucks and manufacturing plants have been developed and are now a regular feature on many mine benches. The next challenge for the explosives industry as a whole is to integrate blast initiation with information technology. The benefits are there, both to the supplier and to the end-user. Much has been written in the past about the potential for blast improvement but there are other significant advantages to a digital initiation system. These include security from unauthorised use, stock control and minimisation, reliability through testability and ease of use to name a few. So why is it taking so long? Surely the complexity of an electronic initiation system is far less than that of mobile phones that have been around for a long time. The answer, it seems, lies in the level of new technologies that need to be developed. There are enormous technological hurdles to be overcome in order to put into the market a cost-effective, reliable, user-friendly electronic initiation system. The most significant of these are:Safely and reliably initiating an explosive from an electronic device powered by a small capacitor. Prior to the development of electronic detonators primary initiation of explosives was by shock tube spit or by passing large currents and voltages down a pair of wires. Electronic detonators do not have that luxury. For example the energy stored in a æBeethovenÆ exploder is more than 500 times greater than that available to an electronic detonator. Communicating to a multitude of devices over very long cables installed by miners in harsh conditions. The deployment of an electronic detonator system has been likened to building a large telephone exchange in the rain and getting it to work perfectly first time! New communications protocols needed to be developed and tested. Wiring and connection systems have to be designed to survive the mining environment. In spite of these technological hurdles most of the major explosives manufacturers have persisted with electronic initiation systems and we are now, in 1999, starting to see the results of these multi-million dollar efforts. At SMI we are often asked many questions about this technology. The remainder of this paper seeks to answer those most often asked. As with any business linked to information technology todayÆs breaking news is tomorrowÆs archive and we expect the rate of development and understanding to accelerate as these technologies become accepted by the global mining industry.

The emerging problem of electronic waste has promoted the interest in exploring metal recovery from secondary sources under the umbrella of urban mining. This study presents the physical and chemical characterization of various components present in end-of-life laptops to help ascertain the sites of metallic values and develop sustainable and environment-friendly recycling. The recycling potential of a laptop is evaluated by sequential disassembly, separation, and characterization of components such as body (49.8 wt.%), printed circuit board (9.7 wt.%), hard disk drive (4.9 wt.%), and battery (12.4 wt.%). The printed circuit boards comprise metallic values, majorly copper (25 wt.%), tin (5.8 wt.%), and lead (3.1 wt.%). The precious metals (Au, Ag) with an economic advantage are abundantly present in electronic components such as integrated circuits, capacitors, resistors, and processors. Critical elements such as lithium, cobalt, and rare earth elements are detected in the discarded laptops' batteries and hard disk drives. The recycling potential representing the amount of material that can be recycled in various components, depending on the type, concentration, and purity, is determined in the range of 36–100%. On average, a unit laptop contains~ 386 g of Cu (14.45 wt. %), 49.73 g Co (1.86 wt. %), ~346 mg Ag, ~141.2 mg Au, ~650 mg of rare earth elements (Nd, Dy). This study presents a database for investigating integrated and economical recycling techniques from different components of a laptop, and an overall process flow is also proposed.

Mining faces many environmental, social and regulatory liabilities of which water management is just one. Others include site rehabilitation, carbon emissions, biodiversity offsets, strategic cropping land, subsidence, and noise and dust generation. Management of these liabilities is commonly seen as a cost of doing business and each is often independently addressed, bypassing the opportunity to reduce costs through integrated approaches. Furthermore, approaches to dealing with these liabilities tend to be constrained by a prevailing culture of engineered solutions and lack of appreciation of risk associated with alternative and hybrid alternative-engineered solutions. Suboptimal outcomes can also be reinforced by rigid regulatory constraints. While the cost of addressing operational liabilities may be a small proportion of overall mine management costs, failure to do so effectively may influence social licence to operate and, as recently demonstrated by the decision of the NSW Land and Environment Court to block expansion of the Warkworth Mine near Singleton, absolute licence to operate.Integration of environmental, social and regulatory liabilities with value-creating and risk-reduction opportunities such as beneficial water use, carbon bio-sequestration, habitat connectivity, keyline farming, improved grazing design and management systems, windbreaks and visual screens, presents opportunities to reduce risk and create value. This potential may achieve overall improved outcomes in both economic and non-economic mine performance criteria.Two case studies in beneficial use of waste water from the mining and coal seam gas (CSG) sectors (which operate under different legislation) will be used to illustrate the potential to address mine development, operational and closure liabilities by understanding opportunities to reduce risk and create value through a holistic water management framework. The technical requirements and alternative approaches to beneficial use of mine water are addressed, along with the direct economic benefits for mine operational costs and opportunities to positively engage communities and build resilience into social licence to operate.
