Data Interchange for Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Specialists (DIGGS) is a data transfer standard that is gaining widespread acceptance in the geotechnical and geoenvironmental communities. Originally developed using funding from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to efficiently capture data related to geotechnical boring logs, cone penetration test (CPT) soundings, and lab testing results, the data transfer protocol is rapidly gaining traction. It has been shown to have beneficial impacts in other allied areas where disparate parties (i.e., consultants, contractors, vendors, etc.) routinely publish/submit data as part of project deliverables. The historic problem is that many of these submissions use paper copies (i.e., .pdf images) to transmit valuable data for the project… data that may extend beyond the “technical” aspects of the project (e.g., equipment operating conditions, construction production rates, project costs, etc.). These data could be used by multiple parties to assess project performance and safety, as well as to track productivity, etc. Currently, in the limited situations when actual data are compiled and transmitted, the data often are submitted as an author-specific (and often proprietary) software application and must then be re-entered into other software applications (e.g., analysis software, database, etc.) for use beyond simple data collection. An initiative undertaken by the Geo-Institute (G-I) of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) focuses on exploiting the full potential of DIGGS to geoprofessionals both within and outside of the transportation community. The deep foundations industry represents one community that could benefit significantly from using DIGGS. Data of interest to DFI members include production records, quality assurance information (e.g., verticality and alignment, concrete strength), and, importantly, load test results. When adopting DIGGS, users need not modify how they capture data, but rather will use DIGGS as a vehicle to transfer data to other applications in a standard format where it can be shared, used, stored, and retrieved. This paper and associated presentation will describe DIGGS and demonstrate how DIGGS can be used effectively within the deep foundations community.

"INTRODUCTION The organic act that became effective July 1, 1910, imposes two very definite primary obligations upon the Bureau of Mines: (1) The prevention of loss of life and limb and the protection of the health of workers in the mineral industries, and (2) the conservation and scientific utilization of the country's mineral resources.The subject of this publication falls within the scope of both of these responsibilities by reason of the fact that (1) certain safety precautions are involved in combating even surface fires and, (2) although peat is not now, so far as known, utilized commercially or otherwise in this country as a fuel, it is extremely valuable agriculturally in at least one of our States, The justification for the conservation of such low-grade fuel through fire prevention appears warranted because of its present value to agriculture and the possible advantages accruing to future generations as a source of heat and power.Although the Bureau of Mines has published information on the origin and uses of peat, this is the first attempt to give out data concerning the prevention and control of peat-bog fires. Although the information presented here is restricted to the Lake Superior District, California, and Florida, there may be similar conditions in other sections of the country that have not come to the attention of engineers of the Bureau of Nines."

The treatment of preg-robbing gold ores has always been a technical challenge in the gold industry. Early solutions included removal of preg-robbing carbonaceous material by flotation, the addition of kerosene to æblindÆ/passivate the surface of the preg-robbing component, and the most effective of all options, roasting the ore. Unfortunately gold ores have become more complex and roasting has environmental challenges, so other methods of treatment have had to be found. The Hamersley Basin of Western Australia holds significant tonnages of detrital iron deposits. Formed by a cyclic weathering and eroding sequence of nominally barren banded iron formation, they may form rich proximal accumulations of iron cemented gravels distal from any obvious hard-rock iron mineralisation. While generally small, they nonetheless represent excellent economic targets as they are near surface and easy to mine. The relatively high density of iron detritals, when compared with their sedimentary hosts, makes the gravity method the primary method of exploring for these blind deposits. Identification of possible trap sites is used as a precursor to gravity surveying, with magnetics used as an ancillary method prior to drilling. Application of the gravity method in this terrain is not straightforward. Detrital trap sites are best developed next to the spectacular cliffs that form the range fronts to the Hamersley Ranges. Precise terrain corrections and use of first vertical derivatives are routinely applied to gravity data in an effort to map every possible gravity high that may reflect the presence of a detrital accumulation. Extensions to Hamersley Iron Pty LimitedÆs BS2D deposit were discovered by the routine application of gravity. This methodology has been used to create a model by which exploration for detrital deposits continue to the present day.

This paper deals with materials of construction and problems encountered and overcome in leaching and filtration of oxidized sulphuric acid slurry in the Port Radium mill after eight years of operation. The slurry is characterized by a high calcium sulphate content as well as a high chloride level under oxidized conditions, both of which affected initial design and subsequent changes. Leach agitation tanks are of wood with a mild steel superstructure and stainless steel agitator and moving parts below solution level. Electro-polished 316 stainless steel cooling coils are used for temperature control of the slurry. The string filters are of the Oliver type with wood decking. Extensive use is made of wood, Linatex lined mild steel and stainless steel for the slurry handling. "This paper presents a case study for optimizing water management at Gregg River Coal Mine located near Hinton, Alberta. The optimization study was derived based on a review and assessment of existing management practices and plans for future operation and final reclamation. A proactive water management strategy was developed to assist mine staff in adopting a rational, environmentally sound, and economical approach to water management. A plan was developed to provide for safe operation, self-sustaining operation, low maintenance, minimum negative environmental impacts, and anticipation of future needs for existing and future operations. A plan for final reclamation drainage was developed including establishment of effective, sustainable, and maintenance-free water management systems. The study demonstrated the importance and benefits of a proactive approach for integrated mine water management. This approach is recommended for other similar mine operations because it will improve environmental compliance and reduce costs of water management. IntroductionGregg River Resources Ltd. (GRRL) operates an open pit coal mine on the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains, located about 45 km south of Hinton, Alberta. GRRL opened the mine in 1982 and expects to continue operations after Year 2000. GRRL has progressively reclaimed the disturbed area and expects to complete mine-land reclamation shortly after mining in the area is complete. The existing disturbed area and reclaimed area covers approximately 9.5 km2 and will expand to about 10.5 km2 upon mine closure.Like other coal mines in the mountainous areas of Alberta and British Columbia, the GRRL coal mine is subject to highly variable temperatures and moisture conditions. Average monthly precipitation varies from a low of 12.6 mm in January to a high of 113.0 mm in August, based on the precipitation record at the mine site since 1982. Despite the relatively high rainfall during the spring and summer months, excess water problems during rainfall events are quickly replaced by water deficit conditions during periodic droughts. Surface runoff varies from near zero in the winter to a mean annual monthly maximum of 78 mm during the month of June. The mean annual surface water yield is 345 mm."

"From June 16 to 19, more than 1,400 tunneling and underground construction professionals gathered in Chicago, IL for the bienial Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC). There, they were greeted by a full technical program and an exciting exhibit hall that provided a comprehensive look at the world’s bustling tunneling and underground construction industry.The successful conference was a reflection of the industry itself, which is to say, busy. As much of the world has begun to focus on creating a cleaner and greener environment, the global tunneling industry has seen an uptick in infrastructure projects move from design-build to construction phase. With a global shift away from the use of fossil fuels, major cities around the world are looking to increase public transportation options, which leads to the need for more transportation tunnels. And as urban populations continue to grow, the need for clean water calls for more tunnels, and as urban footprints continue to expand, the need to increase and update combined sewage overflow tunnel grows with them.During two and a half days, more than 20 sessions covering all of these topics were presented at the Hyatt Regency in Chicago, many to packed rooms in which every seat was taken and people were standing along the side and back walls.RETC is a biennial conference and one of the largest in the North America for the tunneling and underground construction industries. As such, it hosts a robust exhibit floor. This year 172 vendors occupied 205 booth spaces. The exhibit included everything from tunnel boring machine manufacturers, like Robbins and Herrenknecht, to the companies that supply all kinds of parts and services to the industry."

One of the critical challenges facing the mining industry ? and not just in the United States ? is the looming labor shortage. A significant percentage of the industry?s professional workforce is, well, getting old, and many will be retiring in the next 10 years or so. This is not a new issue to the industry. It has been discussed at various industry meetings and conferences for many years. How does mining, with its largely negative public image, attract young people to mining schools? And, equally important, who is going to teach them? Mining schools, what?s left of them in the United States, are beginning to lose qualified faculty to retirements, and no one is available to replace them. SME addressed this issue during the keynote session at its annual meeting in February in Denver, CO. This year?s theme was ?Mining: It?s About the People.? Despite a blizzard that blanketed the city on the day most attendees were to have arrived, the meeting still attracted a record 7,202 people. And the accompanying exhibit sold 822 booths, also a record. The U.S. Department of Energy?s National Energy Technology Laboratory contracted with the National Academies? National Research Council to complete a study concerning the availability of skilled workers to meet the energy and mineral security requirements for the United States. The National Research Council, in turn, asked SME to collect and analyze workforce trends in these industries. The result of SME?s analysis is the report ?Emerging Workforce Trends in the U.S. Energy and Minerals Industries.? It is available on the SME website, www.smenet.org. Click on Government Affairs. While the report did not paint a completely dismal picture, there were some disturbing results. It concluded that within 20 years there will not be a sufficient number of skilled professionals to satisfy the labor demand. That said, the report said that most of those positions would likely be filled. However, the U.S. mining will go through a period of time when the workforce will be made up of very young and senior workers.

Cyanide leaching of two West African gold ores was studied in multiple laboratories to provide process-engineering data for plant design purposes. Unusually slow leach extraction kinetics were observed using routine cyanide leach test procedures with pregnant solution monitoring. Carbon-in-leach testing, however, showed normal rapid kinetic behavior, with the same ultimate gold extractions being reached in much shorter elapsed times. Kinetic curves based on washed solids assays also exhibited more typical leaching characteristics. The results bore all the hallmarks of some equilibrium inhibition of the leaching. It was surmised that ore gangue components were responsible for weakly adsorbing gold-cyanide complex reaction product, thereby holding up soluble gold in the solid phase. The term ?preg-borrowing? was coined to describe the reversible phenomenon and distinguish it from irreversible preg-robbing. The two ores investigated may represent an extreme form of a more general effect that in most instances might pass unnoticed. The effect can lead to misinterpretation of kinetic leach curve data and underestimation of calculated ore head grades.

UNDER the stimulus of war psychology the American public has grown confused and jittery in its thinking on the subject of this nation's petroleum resources. This confusion arises from the failure of the average citizen, and even of many leaders in government, in our armed forces, and in the petroleum industry itself, to distinguish between our proved reserves of petroleum in the several oil-producing states and the total petroleum re- sources available to this nation. Leaders and public alike examine the accepted estimates of our proved reserves and thoughtlessly conclude that these estimates represent the total of our petroleum resources. Our fears are aggravated if we turn to the statistics on oil-finding and observe that the discovery of new reserves has waned decidedly in recent years. This confusion is dangerous because, under its influence, ill - considered policies spring up and flourish, choking out the most valuable fruits of the long experience of the American petroleum industry.

AS is well known, there are large and valuable deposits of coal in British Columbia, both on the mainland and on Vancouver island. These deposits are widely distributed over the Province. The chief sources of supply on the mainland are found in the Fernie and Princeton-Nicola districts and on Vancouver island in the Comox and Nanaimo districts. The coals range from a very high quality bituminous coal to lignite. On the Upper Skeena river there is said to be a very large deposit of anthracite or semi-anthracite, but this field has not been developed. Coal was first discovered in British Columbia on the north end of Vancouver island in the year 1835, but it was not until 1852 that coal mining was seriously undertaken by the Hudson's Bay Company at Nanaimo, where mining has been carried on continuously ever since that date. The production of coal in the Province continued to increase until the year 1910, when the annual output reached its peak at 3,100,000 tons and a total of 7,800 men were employed in the industry. Since 1910, the production has dropped steadily until, in 1934, only 1,347,000 tons of coal were produced and less than 3,000 men were employed. This continued decrease in production has in no way been caused by lack of coal reserves. It has been due entirely to curtailment of markets. I do not propose to discuss coal mining practice in British Columbia, where we have all sorts of mining conditions, including submarine mining. There is no lack of coal supplies for either industrial or domestic purposes, nor is there likely to be any shortage of coal in the Province for many generations. We have our mining troubles, which increase the cost of production, but there are no insuperable difficulties to prevent the extraction of a large and increasing supply of coal. Our main difficulty-in fact our only serious difficulty-is to find a market for our output, and we must consider means which can be evolved not only to conserve our existing markets but also to expand them, at any rate within the boundaries of Canada. I will therefore confine my remarks chiefly to the all-important factor of Markets for our coal.

Over the past 30 years, the authors have encountered numerous projects where recognizing the geology, soil properties and groundwater conditions, and considering alternative construction techniques have promoted efficient and cost-saving construction. The construction documents for these projects, produced by various engineering firms, provided basic information on geotechnical conditions. The authors became involved in each project either because there was a problem during design or construction or, as a contractor, won the project because they saw a value engineering opportunity to take advantage of the geologic setting of the project to design and build alternatives to what the designer depicted. Understanding the geologic setting is critical before planning and designing begins. Being able to work with the geology and the materials on site is preferred before specifying more costly and complex solutions, which often require the importing of materials and adherence to unnecessary and/or inappropriate specifications. Failing to understand the geology or not knowing all the techniques available for construction can lead designers to develop solutions that could be inappropriate. This paper presents several examples of value engineering and project performance enhancements developed through knowledge of basic soil mechanics and implementing innovative solutions. History and Background Most people attend DFI meetings, present their experiences, listen to others, and read articles and papers with the hope they can learn from others. Geotechnical engineers and contractors often interface with others in the execution of projects who have, at best, a rudimentary knowledge of geology and soil mechanics. Of course, there is a need for architects, bankers, and regulators, etc., but they typically do not have much interest in the nuances of geotechnical engineering, which relies on both art and science. Thus, significant time is spent educating counterparts in the need for comprehensive subsurface investigation programs and the intricacies of construction in the “dirt,” as they typically refer to soil and rock.

Discussion of the paper of D. W. Brunton, presented at the Spokane meeting, September, 1909, and published in Bulletin No. 33, September, 1909, pp. 837 to 855. WILLIAM' KENT, New York, N. Y.:-The Institute may congratulate itself on the opportunity of reading the splendid address of President Brunton. It is au admirable summary of the progress that has been made in the mining and metallurgical arts in recent years. The paper rightly give's the chief credit for this progress to the aid which has been rendered to these arts by the advances in mechanics, chemistry, and electricity. It is notable that most of the headings in Mr. Brunton's address refer to the work of the mechanical engineer, the electrical engineer, and the chemist, rather than to that of the specialist in mining-operations. It seems that. the most successful mining engineer of the present day is the one who makes the most intelligent application of the inventions and designs of engineers and others who are not directly engaged in mining. A tabulation' of the headings of the address, grouped as below, shows this most clearly. Work of the Mechanical Engineer-Rock-drills, hoisting-machinery, tramming, pumping, ventilation, dredging, sampling, concentration, briquetting, fume-recovery. Dewatering and groundwater control is required frequently for construction projects and needs to be accounted for and dealt with care during design and construction to complete the project successfully. Dewatering can cause changes in porewater pressure, which changes the effective vertical stress in a soil mass. Dewatering can also cause changes in groundwater chemistry which in turn can cause changes in porewater pressure and also dissolution of soluble minerals in the soil and rock. The Guideline developed in this study addresses the engineering issues, approaches to lessen the potential risks associated with construction dewatering, and presents dewatering practices to support dewatering applications regulated by the Municipality of Abu Dhabi City (ADM) in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The subsurface condition within the city presents significant geotechnical problems due to presence of shallow subsurface cavities and soluble minerals in the soil and rock. Therefore it is critical to develop standards for dewatering practices to provide information for local dewatering engineers and contractors with special emphasis to control and to eliminate the subsidence/collapse problems related to dewatering projects within the Abu Dhabi city. The ADM is also responsible for approval of permit applications for projects that involve dewatering. In order to minimize the risk related to subsidence/collapse problems due to dewatering, construction companies and dewatering contractors need to be informed about possible mitigative measures that can be employed to reduce risks. The guidelines were developed as part of this study based on detailed analysis of the local subsurface conditions. A set of rules and regulations are developed for geotechnical and hydrogeological investigations, dewatering design and monitoring criteria depending on the hazard zones, proximity of excavation to critical structures, excavation depth. The Guidelines include examples of permit application packages for three types of dewatering projects; one involving shallow dewatering, one involving intermediate depth dewatering, and one involving deep dewatering. These Guidelines are considered as living document and will be updated as required, as additional information is collected and additional local experience is gained.

In modern iron pelletizing plants fuel consumption has been optimized to such an extent that only minor savings can be expected in the future. Inspite of this fact, different process parameters were studied with a mathematical model and firing tests. The influence on fuel consumption and productivity was established. Furthermore, the adoption of simplified firing patterns was investigated, in particular for coal firing. In view of high costs of oil and natural gas, only substitution of these fuels by coal can substantially reduce production costs. In existing plants partial replacement of oil and gas can be achieved by addition of coal to the iron ore feed and by firing the pellets with pulverized coal. Two systems have been developed for the Lurgi- Dravo travelling grate process which enables coal to completely replace oil or gas. This paper describes in the first part the potentials for fuel savings available in the Lurgi-Dravo process. In the second part, different techniques for the use of coal as fuel in iron or pelletizing plants and in particular the recently developed Lurgi Multistage Coal Injection and Combustion Process (LMC) are discussed. Combined with the LMC process, a wide variety of iron ores and coals - also with high ash contents - can be used in the Lurgi-Dravo travelling grate process.

The oil- shale studies of the Bureau of Mines , conducted in cooperation with the State of Colorado and the University of Utah , have for their primary purpose the determination of retorting and refining conditions most favorable for obtaining the highest yields of most satisfactory products . Oil shales , typical of the deposits in several States , are retorted in carefully controlled retorts of differe types , the conditions being varied in successive runs as the results indicate that improvement in the yield and quality of the products most desired may be expected . Each shale presents a somewhat different problem , for it has been found that different shales treated under similar conditions yield products of different natures , and also that the same shale will yield products of different natures when retorted under different conditions . Some shales apparently can not be made to yield , under any set of conditions , products of so high an order as are yielded by other shales . This indicates that the oil -yielding materials of certain shales differ in constitution and in their manner of breaking down when undergoing destructive distillation . Other shales appear to contain oil - yielding materials that resemble each other closely as regards chemical constitution , yet they require some. what different conditions of treatment , if products of similar nature are to be produced from each . In such cases the controlling factors seem to be the richness of the shale that is , its content of oil -yielding material and the physical and chemical nature of its mineral parts .

"INTRODUCTION An investigation of the metallurgy of cobalt from domestic ores has been in progress since February 1940 and has resulted in the formation of a hydrometallurgleal process for the production of electrolytic cobalt metal. Previous reports of these investigations have been given by F. K. Shelton; 7/ and Ruth E. Churchwrd, F. K. Shelton, and G. Knickerbocker. 8/ Briefly, the process, as applied to ores containing cobalt oxide, consists of leaching with H2SO3 or, preferably, with H2SO3 and H2SO4, to dissolve the cobalt. The cobalt solution passes through one or more purification stages to remove iron and elements of the copper group, and cobalt carbonate is precipitated under carefully controlled pH conditions. The cobalt carbonate is dissolved in on acid electrolyte containing sulfuric acid, boric acid, and sodium fluoride. The electrolyte then proceeds to electrolytic cells where cobalt is plated as a metal and sulfuric acid is regenerated.The present paper contains the results of several investigations signed to give a more complete chemical and engineering understanding of different unit processes involved in the electrowinning of colbat. Some work has been done to broaden the process to include arseniferrous cobalt ores as well as the oxide ores upon which the investigation was initiated. Most of the data presented herein have been obtained since the release of the previous reports; any changes suggested heroin that conflict with recommendations in earlier reports are based on more complete data and usually are preferable."
