"An analysis of operating costs for underground mining operations in the current global economic climate considers the financial burden for a ventilation system to be in vicinity of 30–50%. These operating costs are often overlooked by management teams in the greater scale of things when looking to save money in the procurement phase. This oversight to operational costs can be as little as the effective delivery of ventilating air to the work zone. One of the biggest opportunities for substantial savings and improvements can be realized in the selection of a quality vent duct that is suitable and fit for purpose. The key component to the selection process for quality products is a solid selection criterion that is followed during the tender process. This allows the management team to filter out unsuitable suppliers and products. The case study identifies some of the key components that were considered in the procurement and selection process for lay-flat ducting products. These included the characteristics and strength of the materials. The selection criteria also considered a ducted performance comparison that offers the best aerodynamic performance with some of the following components. • Airflow at Duct Face (m³/s or cfm), Fan Pressure (Pa), Air Power (kW or hp), Assumed Fan Efficiency, Annual Running Costs, K – Factor or Lambda, Leakage Factor, Joining Method and available Duct Lengths with weights. • Critical components considered were the current Testing standards available for: o Bursting Strength AS 4878.5, Mass AS 2001.2.13, Tensile Strength AS 4878.6, Tensile Strength AS 2001.2.3.1, Tear Strength AS 2001.2.10, Tear Strength AS 4878.7 • Other key considerations were: o Warranty Claim, Damage claims, Local storage / operations, community engagement and relationships, current testing data, previous issues, after sales service with technical assistance, etc. Hidden costs associated with product failures and operational stoppages are often not quantified during the tender process. Buyer beware. INTRODUCTION The largest constraint underground mining operations currently face are their operating efficiencies and electrical costs. The overall cost of an operations ventilation system and its components requires more focus to identify what opportunities exist to maximise efficiency and effectiveness. This tender process may not always be clearly understood and it should be broken down into fewer components to achieve quantifiable results."

This case study describes the geotechnical aspects of the basement construction for a multi-storey, residential and hotel complex located in the newly developed Elizabeth Quay precinct in Perth, Western Australia. The development included a three-level basement for car parking covering the full site area which was constructed using the top-down construction sequence. Soil conditions generally comprised 2m of fill overlying medium to dense clayey sands that in turn were generally overlying a very stiff clay stratum at approximately 13m depth. Bedrock level was generally encountered at approximately 22m to 35m below ground level. The ground water table was at a depth of approximately 1m below the existing ground surface level. A site boundary basement wall was constructed using a diaphragm wall retention system. The majority of the vertical loads from the building were transferred to the Kings Park Formation (KPF) bedrock through the use of foundation piles constructed by the CFA method. The CFA piles were installed from existing ground level, resulting in approximately 9m sacrificial concrete length from pile platform level to basement 3 (B3) level. The permanent column loads are such that a single CFA pile was not structurally adequate. To allow a full CFA foundation system to be adopted, an innovative design and construction approach was developed for these heavily loaded columns. This paper discusses the site technical details and the design and construction aspects required to meet the challenges offered by this project.

Every 2 years the Bureau of Mines publishes a list of equipment that leas been accepted as approved or permissible during the preceding 2 calendar years. This is done to inform the mining industry of the availability y of the latest equip¬ment for safe use underground.

This study focuses on the amosite mining region in South Africa and associated health effects, compared to other mined asbestos fiber types. Historically, dust and fiber levels were high in the amosite mills and mines, and many miners and members of the surrounding communities were exposed to the fibers. Research has shown that amosite produces both benign and malignant disease. Nevertheless, the mesotheliomagenic potential of amosite is several fold lower than crocidolite. The risk of disease associated with amosite exposure is difficult to quantify. Reasons for this include the scarcity of available information, including fiber measurements, and case ascertainment, as well as the juxtaposition of the amosite and crocidolite asbestos seams in South Africa. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. Two major grounding topics are covered: mine ground systems and ground-check monitors. Performance characteristics of ground-check monitors for high-voltage surface mine distribution cables and low-voltage underground mine trailing cables are evaluated. Over 20 commercially available monitors are studied to determine their utility. Several monitoring concepts are incorporated into an unusual monitor design, the prototype of which is described in detail. A comparative study of the effectiveness of several alternate methods of grounding surface mine equipment supports the system currently proposed by MSHA. An instrument design to measure earth voltage gradients is described, as well as an instrument design for measuring the effectiveness of dc haulage current return systems. An extreme analysis is made of techniques for measuring earth resistivity and resistance of safety ground beds. Electrolytic corrosion studies of earth electrodes are reported extensively also.

Changes in world mine and smelter supply sources of zinc have led to changes in zinc supply patterns in the United States during the past 3 years, 1970-72. The result has been a growing reliance on foreign sources of zinc metal to furnish an ever-increasing portion of expending domestic requirements. This review of fundamentals and historical developments is intended to provide background in order to place the future of the U.S. zinc industry fn perspective. The properties and uses of zinc are described. A new study on U.S. reserves is presented with description by geographical region and comparisons with older reserve data. The technology of the zinc industry from prospecting through refining is described with emphasis on the metallurgy involved in the various methods of smelting. Production, consumption, and imports are discussed and illustrated with graphs and tables to review the past and present patterns. Government actions affecting the industry are shown.

"Soil mixing is a proven solution for the construction of ground improvement adjacent to sensitive structures due to the use of computer controlled and monitored equipment. The precision to which geometry is controlled can often be the deciding factor for selection of soil mixing versus other means of ground improvement. Protection of existing structures and utilities requires careful planning, investigation, and may demand supplemental control measures. During planning, it is imperative that the process be fully developed by the project team to ensure proper control measures are budgeted; otherwise, the success and safety of a project can be jeopardized.This paper discusses case histories of soil mixing performed in close proximity to large, sensitive, and critical utilities, including foundation support for an existing earthen dam impounding a water reservoir in upstate NY, a buffer zone for a tunnel drop shaft at an operating wastewater treatment plant in Washington DC, and a containment system to protect a major water line along an interstate widening project in Baltimore, MD. The function of soil mixing as ground improvement varied; however, the selection and application of the technique versus other means of ground improvement was specific due to the controlled manner of construction with soil mixing. Through the three case studies, small diameter (3- ft [0.9 m]), large diameter (8-ft [2.4 m]), and mass mixing applications will be discussed. Furthermore, the case studies offer insight into how the geotechnical community in the Mid-Atlantic utilizes soil mixing technology for widely varying applications. Additional topics of discussion will be the design and construction of the ground improvement systems, procedures and execution of the work to protect existing structures, and the QA/QC methods, procedures, and results from the projects.INTRODUCTIONWet soil mixing, also known as the Deep Mixing Method, is a ground improvement technique that improves the characteristics of weak soils by mechanically mixing them with cementitious binder slurry. To construct columns, a powerful drill advances a mixing tool with radial mixing paddles located near the bottom of the drill string. The binder slurry is pumped through the drill string to the tool as it advances and additional soil mixing is achieved as the tool is withdrawn.Wet soil mixing is applicable in a wide range of soils. Soil mixing has been performed at depths more than 100 lf (30 m). Soils vary widely in their ability to be mixed, depending on the soil type, strength, water content, plasticity, stratigraphy, and texture. Almost any soil type, including organics, can be treated with certain soil mixing technologies, although they may require high binder contents and/or pretreatment to achieve the required results. In cases when the target soil is very soft, including some very weak clays and peats, 100% of the soil may require treatment. This complete coverage of soil mixing is referred to as mass mixing."

The industrial hygiene and safety aspects with internal combustion engines in mining systems is truly interdisciplinary and encompasses many fields such as mine ventilation, exhaust gas and particulate analyses, mine atmospheric environment monitoring, mathematical modeling of generation, dilution and dispersion of pollutants in ventilation systems, and engine testing and approval. This bibliography, therefore, is a compilation of references from interdisciplinary sources pertaining to diesels and related areas. Related areas are defined as those concerned with: (i) mine ventilation system design and operation; (ii) description, measurement, modeling and monitoring of mine atmosphere contaminants, and (iii) tests, standards, selection procedures, and operational practices for internal combustion engines in underground mines. Being much interested in efficiency-work in general, and an ardent reader of writings on this subject by Frederick W. Taylor and others, as applied to manufacturing-plants, and having served my apprenticeship from mucking to the engineering design of ore-dressing and underground plants, I hope that this paper will lead others to investigate the field more fully, to the improvement of general mine- and mill-operations, as well as the advancement, intellectually, physically, and financially, of the employee and his relations with the employer. If a man who is prepared to look closely and observe broadly starts in Canada and zig-zags from camp to camp to southern Mexico, taking time casually to inspect mines, mills, and smelters, he will be pitifully impressed by the great difference in customs, and the general waste of labor, time, and money throughout the country. He will so seldom observe a dollar's worth of results given in exchange for a dollar spent that he will form a poor opinion of operating-efficiency and management. This highly-scientific department, requiring an amount of skill and executive ability equaled in few, if any, of the professions, certainly falls short of the standard established in our greater manufacturing industries. It is easily said that this is due to the diversity of conditions in mining, milling, and smelting. But on second view it must be admitted that there is room for tremendous improvements in nearly every mining-organization. "Introduction""No accounting system is very good, and all of them are infinitely variable*.”The purpose of this chapter is to discuss those facets of a typical accounting system which are most commonly encountered by operating managers in mineral processing plants. However, before concentrating in any detail on these it is important to understand the broad purposes and basic techniques of any accounting system in any major business.The three broad purposes of an Accounting System are:- Administering, controlling, and recording the flow of cash in and out of the business. Cash is, of course, converted into other assets (or stores of value) such as inventory, plant and equipment, etc. These assets also have to be administered, controlled and recorded.- Internal reporting to Management for information, for control, and for use in making business plans and decisions. - External reporting to stockholders, government, lenders and other outside parties.In this chapter we shall organize our discussion of accounting practice in mineral processing plants around these three purposes of accounting and focus in some detail on specific practices and techniques with which operating personnel will be routinely involved. The Edikan mine in Ayamfuri, Ghana, faces economic challenges and community resistance due to its proximity to residential areas, particularly concerning blasting operations. Controlled blasting trials using air deck applications were conducted to address community concerns by minimizing environmental impacts and explosive costs. This method involves utilizing an air gap within blast holes to prolong the action of shock waves on the rock mass, enhancing crack formation and reducing rock movement. The trial project at the Edikan open pit gold mine aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of air deck blasting in reducing ground vibrations and overpressures, and to assess its impact on blast performance and economics in the prevailing geological conditions of meta-sediment and hard granite rocks. Results indicated lower Peak Particle Velocity (PPV) and Peak Sound Pressure Levels (PSPL) values in the air-decked blasts. Additionally, more uniform rock fragmentation and enhanced blast economics were achieved. Explosive costs were reduced by 20–24%, saving $0.97 to $2.24 per hole depending on the rock type. Overall blasting costs per volume decreased to $0.54 in granite and $0.48 in meta-sediment compared to conventional methods.

The Bureau of Mines has completed 4 yr of deep-bed filtration research comparing the efficiencies of granular magnesium oxide (MgO) and conventional filter sand in single- and dual-medium filters when filtering mineral-processing and mine waters. Bench and field evaluation tests were conducted using water types ranging from synthetic suspensions of asbestos, kaolin, metal hydroxides, and milled sand to process waters from magnetite beneficiation, iron ore flotation, granite cutting, and a steel mill. Even though the turbidity reductions were similiar, MgO filters were found to be advantageous when filtering water pretreated with alum because the volume throughput before breakthrough (turbidity > 1 NTU unit) was much more for the MgO filter than for the sand filter. Reduced head loss owing to the greater porosity of the MgO filter beds is potentially the most beneficial advantage in employing MgO as the filter medium, especially when filtering water pretreated with polymer flocculants. Granular MgO (periclase) is durable and can be backwashed Like sand. It is compatible with anthracite in a dual-medium filter and apparently is not poisoned by dissolved metals in the process water. No single solid-removal mechanism could be identified for the improved filtration observed with granular MgO.

A literature review on quantitative analysis of mine safety studies revealed that investigators use a wide range of statistical techniques for the analysis of mine injury data. Researchers have addressed the various issues of accident causation and prevention through analysis of mine injury data collected from mines. These studies are generally based on historical accident/injury data without considering the injured person/population at risk. In this paper, a public health approach, based on scientific methods of epidemiology, is presented to address mine safety issues. Epidemiology is the scientific study of disease and injury patterns among populations in time and space. Originally, epidemiology was concerned with epidemics of communicable diseases. Then it was extended to non-communicable diseases. Safety researchers found that epidemiologic methods are the best tools for injury research, because the occurrences of injury and the occurrences of disease are quite similar. As a result, some researchers started applying this concept to injury research. This paper presents some of the techniques used in epidemiologic studies and illustrates the application of a case-control study design to evaluate the role of some risk factors associated with injuries in underground coal mines. In this study, the injured persons were identified and, simultaneously, interviews were conducted to find the significant risk factors responsible for occupational injuries in coal mines.

"Thirteen Canadian sulphide ore mines were surveyed for corrosion control. The mines visited were a small, yet representative, proportion of this segment of the Canadian mining and metallurgical industry. Information on metallic corrosion and methods used to control it in underground workings and mills was gathered (a) by discussing corrosion problems with company personnel, (b) by examining equipment and structures during under-ground and mill tours, (c) by photographing corrosion sites, and (d) by collecting and analyzing mine water samples.The corrosion survey, which is summarized in the re-port, leads to the following general conclusions. Mine environments are corrosive, particularly when the mine w1a-ter is acidic. Because of a lack of good corrosion control measures, excessive deterioration of equipment due to corrosion occurs in mines. Mill environments are also corrosive, but in some cases good preventive measures are being taken to effectively control corrosion losses.Ways to reduce corrosion losses in sulphide ore mines and mills are discussed. The main areas for more corrosion research and development are selection of materials of construction, protective coatings, cathodic protection, inhibitors, equipment design, and mining and milling practices."

This publication is a compilation of tested methods for the analyses of titanium tetrachloride, titanium sponge, and various intermediate materials and products. They are presented in concise form without the detail usually found in publication of new methods because many of them are modifications of well known procedures. The Electrometallurgical Experiment Station, Boulder City, Nev., has been developing titanium production methods since 1945. Most of this development was on a modified Kroll Process but also included work on sodium reduction and electrolytic methods. During these years a large variety of samples were analyzed. Most of the analytical problems were solved using published methods or modifications of the same. At the start, there were no published procedures for analyzing titanium sponge using spectrochemical methods. A great deal of study was given to testing several of the well known techniques, and some of them, such as direct sparking of the metal, proved to be completely unsatisfactory. Solution-spark techniques were finally tried, and satisfactory procedures were developed for some of the more common impurities. These spectrochemical methods were then put into routine use for several months before their publication.2/ Some new modifications have been made, and techniques have been developed to determine other impurities found in titanium sponge and tetrachloride. All spectrochemical methods used in 1954 are included in this publication.

The Bureau of Hines and industry (mining and private) have studied the placement of hydraulic sandfill in deep-vein mines to identify existing problems and to develop techniques to strengthen the support characteristics of the sandfill. The hydraulic sandfill system, physical properties of typical classified mill tailings, and properties of sandfill modified by various techniques are discussed. Computer analysis has defined the support capability of various sandfills using actual mine field data as a reference base. High-modulus sandfill can provide adequate support in deep-vein mines to alleviate rock and pillar stresses and to reduce rock-burst incidence.

THIS PAPER will review Canada's fossil fuel situation as we understand it today and indicate some of the options available to meet our energy requirements during the next 15 years. It would therefore be helpful to examine Canada's total energy requirements and discuss the un certainties of the data base on which we must base future energy investment decisions. On the world scene, Canada is at the top of the energy-consuming nations, using about 49 bbls of oil equivalent per caput/ year. This appears to be slightly ahead of the U.S. and of course much higher than that of many countries. It is generally accepted that there is a more or less direct relationship between energy consumption and material standard of living. However , as we know, Canada, when compared with other industrialized countries on a GNP, an individual-income or some other standard basis, is lower in the list. This situation may be explained by our more severe climate and a relatively small population distributed over a land mass second only to that of the Soviet Union.

Mediterranean regions such as Greece, Turkey, Cyprus, Corsica and New Caledonia have experienced epidemics of malignant mesothelioma as a result of non-occupational, ??domestic?? exposure to tremolite asbestos and fibrous erionite. This exposure to tremolite asbestos and fibrous erionite is typified ??domestic?? due to its prevalence in regions with natural deposits of tremolite asbestos (or fibrous erionite) where the material from tremolite asbestos or fibrous erionite is used for domestic applications such as whitewashing. However, these exposures may be useful in examining the potential consequences of even small amounts of amphibole asbestos fibers in the ambient air. It can also elucidate the effects of fibers that behave like amphibole asbestos. However, this type of exposure is not useful for studying the potential effects of small amounts of asbestos in the ambient air of big cities due to the differing nature of the fiber types and modes of exposure between the regions. © 2008 Published by Elsevier Inc.
