A relational database in which its complex contents can be navigated through a map interface (ie spatially enabling) is relatively a new concept yet attractive for geoscience fields. This concept is made possible using the new breed of geographic information system (GIS) that utilises component object model and relational database management system. Such sophisticated yet open and highly interoperable platform makes possible the integration of data management, analysis, and modeling processes into single workflow. Taking benefit of this technology trend, several initiatives emerge in geoscience to establish digital data models, such as the petroleum industry, the North America digital geologic map data model, and the ESRI geology data model. The mining industry unfortunately has not followed same paths due to the lack of data model and standards in its history. This paper presents an effort on establishing a digital data model for mining-related geoscience databases. The aim is to promote several standards by proposing a preliminary data model and demonstrating that the model is working for the mining business datasets. The case study is the island of Java, the western part of the Sunda island arc of Indonesia. Many types of datasets, such as geologic maps, topography, mineral deposits, structures, geochemical and geophysical data were dealt with and were transformed relational geologic databases of Java using the new Geodatabase geographic data model. Intelligent GIS tools were investigated for geologic applications, ranging from generic to specific purposes. Subtypes and domain were used to set up constraints, while topology rules and relationship classes were used to create links among data layers. The linear referencing system was used to model drillhole data. The current results show that the generic GIS and relational database can handle typical tasks related with mining business datasets. A preliminary data model is finally suggested.

In the early 1970s, it became a concern that exposure to the mineral fibers associated taconite ore processed in Silver Bay, Minnesota would cause asbestos-related disease including gastrointestinal cancer. At that time data gaps existed which have now been significantly reduced by further research. To further our understanding of the types of airborne fibers in Silver Bay we undertook a geological survey of their source the Peter Mitchell Pit, and found that there are no primary asbestos minerals at a detectable level. However we identified two non-asbestos types of fibrous minerals in very limited geological locales. Air sampling useful for risk assessment was done to determine the type, concentrations and size distribution of the population of airborne fibers around Silver Bay. Approximately 80% of the airborne fibers have elemental compositions consistent with cummingtonite-grunerite and the remaining 20% have elemental compositions in the tremolite-actinolite series. The mean airborne concentration of both fiber types is less than 0.00014 fibers per milliliter that is within the background level reported by the World Health Organization. We calculate the risk of asbestos-related mesothelioma and lung cancer using a variety of different pessimistic assumptions. (i) that all the non-asbestos fibers are as potent as asbestos fibers used in the EPA-IRIS listing for asbestos; with a calculated risk of asbestos-related cancer for environmental exposure at Silver Bay of 1 excess cancer in 28,500 lifetimes (or 35 excess cancers per 1,000,000 lifetimes) and secondly that taconite associated fibers are as potent as chrysotile the least potent form of asbestos. The calculated risk is less than 0.77 excess cancer case in 1,000,000 lifetimes. Finally, we briefly review the epidemiology studies of grunerite asbestos (amosite) focusing on the exposure conditions associated with increased risk of human mesothelioma. © 2008 Elsevier Inc. This analysis attempts to reconcile existing ecological theories, rehabilitation planning goals and implementation constraints in the form of a rehabilitation paradigm that considers potential and pragmatic ecosystem transformation pathways. The framework prioritises multiple developmental scenarios for post-disturbed landscapes within a continuum of ecological outcomes. A feature of the framework is that ænovelÆ ecosystems and agro-ecosystems, having a range of commercial and societal values, are valid outcomes spanning the conceptual divide between the ecological functions of under-rehabilitated versus re-instated ænaturalÆ landscapes, especially in a changing environment. Landscape suitability analyses are considered to be fundamental to the incorporation of regional landscape and climate in the implementation of land rehabilitation and management strategies. Altogether, the paradigm could facilitate the identification of widely pertinent rehabilitation goals having direct implications at the regional scale of restoration ecology and acceptance of the need for ongoing commitment to the management of disturbed environments.CITATION:Audet, P, Doley, D and Mulligan, D R, 2012. A mine fire is one of the most challenging safety issues facing a mine operator and can occur at any location underground. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the Twentymile Coal Mine, CO, conducted in-mine experiments to determine the capability of high-expansion foam for addressing underground fires. The tests were conducted in sloping entries with high-capacity diesel-powered foam generators. The following results were observed: a well-designed, maintained and properly operated high-expansion foam generator can propagate a foam plug hundreds of feet in steep upward-sloping (20%) multiple entries against a ventilation pressure; stoppings and partitions designed to contain the foam plug in upward-sloping entries must be substantially constructed; and the predicted quantity of foam concentrate can be significantly less than the actual amount used, due to foam losses, such as bubble breakage on dry surfaces. This paper describes the production of high-expansion firefighting foam and discusses the in-mine experimental tests and results.

"The paper treats the spatial aspect of mine sequence optimization. This aspect is revealed in the context of determination of the optimum number of cutbacks of an open pit mine. Cutback mining is a dominating method currently in base\precious metal mining and it is based on a pseudo-economic discretization of the pit space by using advanced pit design algorithms. The result of the implementation of such approach of pit design is the generation of pit shells, which need to be grouped into an optimum number of cutbacks for maximization of the project value. A mathematical solution of this problem is developed with the utilization of a combinatorial analysis. The solution provides a multi-variant investigation of the optimum mine sequence with the implementation of an author’s method for production scheduling optimization, which uses the Net Present Value as a criterion for assessing the economic efficiency of mine sequencing. A case study is provided for the conditions of a hypothetical open pit gold mine to illustrate the applicability of the approach. The results obtained reveal the complex nature of the variation of the Net Present Value as a function of the cutback geometry. INTRODUCTION The mine sequence optimization in open pit mining is a procedure that predetermines the efficiency of the production scheduling optimization. From a technological standpoint, the mine sequence optimization deals with two aspects – spatial and time. Each of them plays a tremendously important role in searching for the optimum solution of the open pit design problem. Original results on the time aspect of mine sequence optimization are published by Halatchev [2002]. They reveal a wide range of the Net Present Value (NPV) variation for a multi-variant arrangement of mine sequence over time and using a fixed geometry of the cutbacks, which determines the economic potential of a single open pit mine from a deterministic standpoint. The results show a range of NPV variation up to 30% depending on the stripping ratio of the mine. The effect of this variation is mainly due to the implementation of the mine planning principle of waste deferment in the scheduling optimization and using all theoretically possible variants of mine sequence arrangement by the inclusion of the bench sequences over the Life-Of-Mine (LOM) in the production process."

Close monitoring of performance at each process stage, from raw material through to finished product, is vital for operational consistency and the production of high quality steel. However, many of the integrated iron and steelmaking process route stages operate under such severe conditions of temperature, dust, water, thermal radiation, vibration, pressure, vacuum, extreme dynamic events, high material flows, corrosion, erosion, electrical-noise, electromagnetic-noise, or audio-noise that, in general, it is a very difficult challenge to obtain useful information for control. Thus, state-of-the-art non-contact and remote sensors are applied to help monitor and control specific process operations. Often, these sensor systems have been developed especially for the steel industry and they are based on four principal technologies: Laser, Microwave, Electro-Magnetics and Thermal Imaging with supporting technologies such as: X-ray Fluorescence, Audiometry, Digital Image Processing, Radio Telemetry, GPS and many others. These advanced sensor technologies are reviewed with respect to their application at various stages along the integrated process route.

The critical importance of tap-hole design and management to furnace performance and longevity is explored through examining some of the specific matte, metal and slag tapping requirements of non-ferrous copper blister and matte converting and smelting, ferroalloys smelting and ironmaking systems. Process conditions and productivity requirements and their influence on tapping are reviewed for these different pyrometallurgical systems. Some critical aspects of the evolution of tap-hole design to meet the diverging process and tapping duties are examined. Differences and similarities in tapping practices and tap-hole management are reviewed. Finally core aspects of tap-hole equipment and maintenance are identified that are considered important to securing improved tap-hole performance and life, so pivotal to superior furnace smelting performance.

The Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre has conducted an intensive VertiMill® (VTM) survey program at the Cannington mine concentrator as part of the ‘collaborative research in stirred milling technology’ program funded by Metso Minerals. Since 2003, Cannington has progressively added grinding capacity into the circuit through VTMs operating in secondary and regrinding duties. Cannington was one of the first mines to adopt this technology in secondary duty by installing two VTM-1500-WBs as part of a capacity expansion to produce sub-100 µm rougher feed. Subsequently, an additional VTM-800-WB was installed in the lead regrind circuit to prepare sub-20 µm cleaner stage feed.Several surveys were carried out to evaluate the VTM performance over a range of changed conditions. Among the key changes in operating variables were circuit power draw, feed rate and water addition to the bottom of the mill. The average specific energy for secondary duty was 3.7?kWh/t. The lead and zinc regrind mills consume 8.1 and 15.3 kWh/t respectively. Generally, the VTM installations have successfully prepared feed for rougher and cleaner circuits by reducing the top size into the floatable regime with steeper particle size distribution, which has led to enhanced recovery. In two earlier studies the Federal Bureau of Mines undertook to explore comprehensively the dimensions of the Nation's energy balance. The first of these studies, published in 1950 as Bureau of Mines Information Circular 7582, by Harold J, Barnett, was primarily concerned with projections of future domestic energy requirements and supplies, because these related to projected growth in major fuel-consuming sectors of the economy, changing rates of energy-use efficiency, and interfuel substitution patterns. But, to provide the essential background for these projections, it was first necessary to assemble and examine in some detail the quantitative information on the size and shape of the current United States fuel economy. Among other things, Barnett's path-breaking study indicated the need to consider energy as an entity, particularly for public and private policy makers, industry and commodity analysts, economists, and others concerned with long range questions of domestic and international energy supply and demand. The study also spotlighted a gap in the fabric of current economic intelligence; no comprehensive collation and reconcilation in any single report of available published statistical information covering the origin -a disposition of all energy materials existed. In response to this latter need, the Bureau of Mines prepared the second of the two studies referred t3 above. This was published in 1951 as Report of Investigations 4805, by W, H, Lyon and D, S. Colby, and it consisted of statistical information on the production and use of each of the various fuels and electric energy in the United States for 1929, 1939, and 1947; all were presented in tabular form and on a uniform basis. The three years selected were chosen largely on the basis of data availability.

Mining operations generate Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) that poses a significant threat to the natural environment. AMD treatment using Ca(OH)2 leads to the precipitation of a sludge dominated by a mixture of ferri-oxyhydroxides. This sludge has poor dewatering tendencies and is deposited in landfills with potential for metal remobilization. This study investigated the dewatering behaviour of a precipitate formed during elevated temperature treatment of a primary, pre-settled sludge from the neutralisation of aqueous acidic Fe2(SO4)3 and Ca(OH)2 solutions in an MSMPR reactor. The resulting treated precipitates were analysed for micro-properties, with results showing that an increase in the secondary reactor temperature from 25 °C up to 50 °C led to an increase in mean particle size, a decrease in the number of particles and improved dewatering behaviour at a ferric concentration of 300 mg/L. This was ascribed to the attainment of a circum-neutral surface charge that favoured agglomeration and a change in micro and nano-structure that allowed for better water passage.

The application of geophysical technology relative to the exploration, planning, and operation of coal mines is expanding. This is due to the trend of the industry to increase the size of operations, use of mechanized equipment and mining of more difficult coals, where unforeseen conditions can affect mine profitability. Coal is a good geophysical target because of its lower density, higher electrical resistivity, lower seismic wave velocity, and lower magnetic susceptibility in comparison to typical country rock. The more important techniques are well logging, high resolution seismic reflection, seam wave velocity, and radar. These methods can be used to map coal horizons, determine the physical properties of the coal, and identify mining hazards. The methods are not a pancrea however. Their use should be based on a careful assessment of their expected success and cost benefit analysis in comparison with conventional technology, primarily drilling, which none of the techniques presented should entirely replace. In general, the level of technology developed for geophysics surpasses their current level of application to coal problems. In some cases, identifying hazards in advance of mining using seam wave seismic in particular, the state of the art has been developed in Europe and is awaiting fruitful application in the United States.

The mine shafts and. surface plant or International Minerals & Chemical Corp. are situated. in. sec.. 12, T. 22 S., R. 29 E., N. M. P. M., about 26-1/2 miles by paved highway east of the city of Carlsbad (figs. 1, 2, and 3). A spur line of the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad connects the mine with the Clovia-Pecos branch of the same road near Loving, a few miles south of Carlsbad. This spur also serves the refinery of United Staics Potash Co. This report gives. the history and describes the geology of the district. Methods of prospecting, exploration, sampling, and estimation of tonnage and values are explained; development and mining methods are discussed in con- siderable detail; transportation, ventilation and drainage are outlined; safety measures are noted; and the wage scale and organization are mentioned.

"This report is based primarily on a study of safety conditions and practices followed in the coal mines of Japan. Not all of the coal fields in Japan were studied, but typical mines in the largest producing areas and a fair cross section of coal-mine-safety conditions observed during February to April 1948 are described.Information was obtained through investigations conducted in the mines, discussions with mine-management officials and representatives of labor unions of the various mines visited, and examination of records and statistics from the various offices of the Coal Board of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and from the Coal Association of Japan. Statistical data covering the same subject, obtained from different sources, varied in many respects and apparently were reported inaccurately, but such discrepancies can be attributed to different methods of reporting and compiling statistics.It is difficult to correlate the high fatal and nonfatal injury rates that prevail in Japanese coal mines with the conditions observed in the mines. Virtually all mines visited were attempting to prevent accidents and explosions, by apparently following known safety precautions for the prevention thereof. Some commendable safety innovations were observed at several mines; they indicated that mine officials are giving thought and consideration to hazardous conditions that affect their particular mines.Naturally, the operating officials and management were anxious to impress the writer with their interest in accident prevention and safety. Operating officials were found to be receptive to safety and wore interested in formulating definite safety programs. Some nines had well-planned and well-organized safety programs, which, if put into effect, would contribute greatly toward reduction of accidents.The approach to safety in Japan is quite different from that in the United States, especially the concept of personal responsibility for accidents and the extent to which the individual should be protected against hazards. Management is responsible for providing and maintaining safe working conditions. Collaboration between management and worker, as understood in the United States, does not exist in Japan.Increase in accidents since the cessation of hostilities is the result of unsettled economic conditions in the coal industry, influx of inexperience workers, and breakdown of discipline among the miners, who have been organized into unions. Those unions are greatly influenced by ""leftist"" tendencies.It was observed that the Japanese mine worker is fatalistic by nature and has little, if any, noticable safety consciousness. The most urgent major requirements to reduce accidents in the coal mines are to train the worker in accident prevention and instruct him regarding the inherent hazards of his occupation.Revision of the mining laws would help to reduce accidents if the companies would comply with such laws and provide safer working places and if the workers would cooperate with management and observe and comply with such laws as are enacted for their protection."

The laboratory wear testing capabilities of the Bureau of Mines are described, Wear tests are used to support the Bureau?s research efforts toward reducing the wear of equipment used for mining and minerals processing and any wear involving a loss of strategic or critical materials. The emphasis is on abrasive wear because it accounts for most of the wear losses that occur in mining and minerals processing equipment, Spalling wear, caused by repetitive impact in grinding equipment, also is included, Ten abrasive wear tests, including high- stress and low-stress and two-body and three-body conditions, are described: dry-sand, rubber-wheel abrasive wear; Taber Abraser; abrasion resistance of refractory materials; dry-particle erosive wear; elevated-temperature, dry-particle erosive wear; low-angle slurry pot; jaw crusher gouging wear; ball mill wear; pin-on-drum abrasive wear; and high-speed impact gouging. Two repetitive impact tests are described: ball-on-block impact-spalling and ball-on-ball impact-spalling. Test equipment, procedures, and specimens are described, and typical test results are presented and discussed.

This report presents nearly all structural data available from explosion tests of 20-psi mine ventilation seals and concrete-block ventilation stoppings that were conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health during 1997?2008. Although the seals tested were designed to meet the former federal 20-psi pressure design standard, the structural information contained herein on these seal tests will facilitate the analysis and design of coal mine seals that meet the new explosion pressure design criteria of 50 and 120 psi as set forth in the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA)?s final rule on ?Sealing of Abandoned Areas.? The seal testing data are organized into six broad categories of seal structures based on the materials used and the construction method for those 20-psi seals: 1. Concretelike materials with steel reinforcement and reinforcement bar anchorage to rock 2. Pumpable cementitious materials of varying compressive strengths with no steel reinforcement and no hitching 3. Articulated structures such as solid-concrete-block seals and ventilation stoppings made of solid and hollow-core concrete blocks 4. Polymer and aggregate materials without hitching 5. Wood-crib-block seals with or without hitching 6. Articulated structures such as lightweight blocks with or without hitching This summary contains data on 52 different structures in the above categories?44 seals and 8 ventilation stoppings. The structural data sets include the applied loading on the tested seal represented by a pressure-time curve and, when available, the measured seal response represented by a displacement-time curve. The structural data sets enable the calibration and verification of numerical models of seal behavior at the 20-psi level, which may then facilitate future structural analyses of seal designs for the new 50- and 120-psi explosion pressure design criteria.

Net present value (NPV) has been the main criterion in mining project evaluation and production plan optimisation. It is a common practice in NPV calculations to take into account only the tangible cost items in the corporate accounting system. The costs incurred due to damage to the local ecosystem and environment are left out and treated as externalities. Such practice on the one hand underestimates the total cost of a mining operation and, on the other hand, ignores the difference in ecological/environmental impacts between different mine plan alternatives. This paper attempts to measure the ecological costs of mining and to incorporate such costs into the evaluation scheme in mining project evaluation and mine planning. The ecological costs of mining are estimated based on the areas and types of land (eg forest land, grazing land, crop land) damaged by mining activities and the carbon emission from fossil fuel consumption. For the land areas (and their associated ecosystems) directly damaged by mining activities, the ecological costs are measured by the prevention and restoration costs, the lost values of eco-services of the damaged land, including bio-product production, soil erosion control, water run-off control, oxygen release, air pollutant absorption and formation of soil nutrients. The ecological cost of carbon emission from the energy consumption of a mining operation is measured by the cost of cultivating the equivalent forest land required to uptake the emitted carbon. A case study on a large-scale open pit mining project is presented to demonstrate the influence of ecological costs on the mine planning outcome.

Nobody has, as yet, made a perfect machine. Therefore, when a machine is operating and functioning as it is designed to do, there is always some vibration present. This is easily and simply measurable with present-day equipment and any increase in the amount of vibration will indicate a potential failure. When an increase is noted, vibration analysis can pinpoint the cause of the potential failure and remedial action can be taken before an unscheduled shutdown is necessary or a breakdown occurs.
