"The index A*b, determined from the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) drop weight tester (DWT) results, has become well-known in the mining industry as a reliable measure of ore hardness in impact or crushing, having the inferred units of t/kWh. This index evolved from a long history of comminution studies at the JKMRC, including the development of the now superseded JKTech twin-pendulum, the industry standard JK Drop Weight Tester (JKDWT) and the faster alterative JKMRC rotary breakage tester (JKRBT). A reduced version of the DWT, the semi-autogenous grinding mill comminution test (SMC test®), also provides estimates of the A*b though the testing of only one particle size at five specific energies. Experimental determination of A*b using the above devices/tests requires samples, with sufficient mass, to be sent to designated laboratories, registered to conduct such tests. This protocol is fine for bankable and commercial testing, where material characterisation data is used in conjunction with machine specific data in modelling and simulation, and power based calculations. However, for comparative testing, where results are required at the time of sampling (eg for plant troubleshooting or spot-surveys), or for rapid ranking of geometallurgical samples, these existing tests simply do not provide a timely, viable and cost-effective solution. In order to address this critical void in the realm of comparative testing, a new device has been developed, exploiting a central feature of single particle impact testing – that the A*b can be reliably estimated using one precise low energy test. This device, for which a patent is currently pending, called the HIT (Hardness Index Tester), has been precision engineered to allow users to break narrowly sized fragments at a set specific energy, in a safe and easy manner. The manufacturing materials have been chosen carefully to ensure compatibility with the intended use and portability to any site, whilst minimising cost. The device is supplied with a novel quality assurance / quality control (QA/QC) feature, to ensure that the targeted potential energy is consistently delivered. The product from the HIT breakage test can be quickly sized using a single screen to determine the mass per cent undersize, from which the A*b index is calculated directly at site – eliminating the need to send the raw data off-site for analysis. On presized fragments, a single test using 20 fragments takes less than five minutes to complete, and the results are immediately available. The HIT is currently being tested at a major mining laboratory in the US and the results to date have proved it can deliver on all fronts. This paper describes the new prototype device, which offers users a low cost in-house mechanism for estimating the A*b at any mine site, with potential applications on fragments up to 25 mm from drill core, blast chip rejects or the grinding circuit feed. "Secant pile walls are used for the construction of deep basement walls and earth retaining structures. Risk associated with secant pile walls is commonly perceived as being the safety of site personnel and the public during piling operations, or safety used in design. It is recognized that both of these are of paramount importance, but additional risks associated with the construction methods must also be considered to complete the risk management profile for any project. For the particular case of secant pile walls, if Clients take a ""back seat"" they may be unaware of the total risk package they are procuring. The authors argue that the piling contractor should be involved at the earliest stage giving input into the overall risk management process. Such early involvement within the professional team will maximise cost benefits to the Client and minimise the delays and cost increases sometimes associated with these works. A consistent methodology for identifying and then managing all the risks associated with secant pile walls is proposed. An example is used to demonstrate how this methodology should be employed. INTRODUCTIONThis paper discusses the value of a complete and integrated risk management process for structures with basements formed using a secant pile wall.The risk associated with any secant pile wall can be consicfered as comprising four components;1. Safety of people on site2. Safety of design or design methodology3. Construction risks4. The Société Nationale Industriel et Minière (SNIM) is expanding its ore and concentrate production capacity in Mauritania, West Africa. This government-controlled mining company has been in production since 1963 and currently exports some 12 Mt/a.SNIM is presently doubling its magnetite concentrate production at the Guelb el Rhein mine. An existing processing line will have a second parallel production line of 4 Mt/a added. The mine is located some 600 km inland from the Atlantic coast in the heart of the Sahara Desert.The metallurgy of the ore is reasonably straightforward. It is a magnetite banded iron formation that is amenable to magnetic separation. While the existing plant uses semi-autogenous grinding and dry magnetic separation, the new processing line will use HPGRs, dry magnetic separation, and a wet milling and magnetic separation circuit for treating middlings.The process choices refl ect the scarcity of water in the region, the high cost of locally generated power and the operating experience and preferences of SNIM. Dust control in the desert environment has been a particular challenge.The metallurgical design aspects as well as the infl uence of the environmental and commercial aspects of the project are presented.

Sustainable Development is a very broad initiative in the mining industry, with major components running over the entire life of the mine. It likely commences with pre-exploration permitting and continues to post-mining final closure and possible land reuse. Most major mining corporations embrace the sustainability initiative, either out of a sense of social responsibility or out of necessity in order to continue doing business. But many may view the overall initiative as an added ?cost of doing business.? In many elements of sustainability, there clearly can be added cost ? some as simple as complying with self-imposed sustainability reporting. Fortunately, one major element of sustainable development can clearly be shown to reduce costs ? energy resource management. This paper will describe how the mining industry sustainable development effort differs from other industries, but can benefit from their experience in energy resource management. The mining industry can utilize proven methods from other industries to further their energy management efforts. In addition, many of the resources developed and employed to promote better energy resource management in non-mining industrial settings will be listed.

Gravity recoverable gold (GRG) is largely distinguished from other gold by its non-mineralised, metallic form, its high degree of liberation from the ore and its appreciable particle size. The gold mining industry has so widely accepted the use of batch centrifugal concentrators (BCC) and intensive cyanidation (IC) systems for the recovery of GRG that these may well be considered requirements of any plant processing ore containing appreciable GRG. The recovery of gold by gravity is quick, easy and cheap by comparison to alternatives. However, there are cases where attributes of the ore make recovery of gold by gravity and IC unusually challenging. This paper describes three examples where such challenges have been encountered and met, including those where the ore contains cyanide soluble base metals and where fine GRG is to be recovered from flotation concentrate.CITATION:King, A and Carrillo, J, 2018. A process for simultaneously reducing and indurating iron are pellets was developed by Bureau of Mines laboratory research and confirmed on a continuous pilot plant basis. Moist iron are concentrate was balled, mixed with solid reductant, and heated at about 1,100° to 1,150° C. On a small scale, a variety of concentrates and fuels were utilized successfully. The pilot rotary kiln tests were limited to natural magnetite, synthetic magnetite, lignite, and anthracite. In both cases, partially reduced pellets with excellent physical properties were regularly produced with average analyses of at least 80 percent total iron and 60 percent or more metallic iron. These and other prereduced pellets were smelted in the Bureau's experimental blast furnace facility, Bruceton, Pa. With prereduced spheres comprising 85 percent of the burden, the coke rate was approximately half that with standard oxide pellets and production of hot metal was increased by 75 percent. Economic appraisal of the cost of making hot metal indicates that reduced pellets could be more profitable than any other iron raw material in both investment capital and daily cost of operation.

If the downturn was the result of unsustainable economic policy, the path forward has everything to do with sustain-ably meeting the demands of more people enjoying higher standards of living than ever before. Minerals producers must be poised to understand and meet their requirements well into the next decade. Successfully marketing industrial minerals - the building blocks of a growing and increasingly urban world population - will depend on producers? ability to respond nimbly to a rapidly changing and regionally evolving macroeconomic environment. A renewed focus on energy conservation, sustainable agriculture and building practices and consumer demand for products with a smaller environmental footprint will drive product and market segmentation strategies. These trends will not only shape the way industrial minerals producers do business, but also the type of skills and people they will require to run those businesses.

Canadian Electrolytic Zinc has developed the "cement-stabilization of jarosite residue" Garofix) process to stabilize zinc plant jarosite residues for disposal. The cement-jarosite mixtures cure quickly, have good mechanical strength and low hydraulic permeability; they possess good neutralizing capability and chemical stability. In the jarofix process, Portland cement partly decomposes jarosite to form (SO4MOH)12.nH2O, ferric hydroxide and an alkali sulphate. Approximately 40% of the jarosite reacts in mixtures containing 30% cement. The jarofix product also contains various Ca-Al-Fesilicate-sulphate-hydrate phases and gypsum, which bond the individual particles together imparting mechanical strength and reducing the permeability. Most of the reactions take place in the first few hours of curing. Ammonium jarosite is slightly more reactive than sodium jarosite but releases NH3 gas; water-soluble Zn in the jarosite residue is stabilized in the cement reaction products.

This report documents a systematic approach towards implementing an improved ensemble for the mine rescue team system that will protect against the hazards of mine rescue and recovery and will also afford improved performance through increased comfort and maneuverability, lighter burdens, and improved human engineering designs. In the first part (Task 1) the mine rescue team's protective needs were defined along with the test methods required to evaluate whether a particular piece of gear met these needs. Task 2 assessed existing gear against performance criteria and standards developed in Task 1. Task 3 consisted of the conceptual design and construction phases of the MRPE program. Special consideration was given to advanced concepts, materials, and equipment.

Iron segregation is pre-dated by copper and nickel segregation processes for which the experimental methodology and reaction chemistry were established. The accepted reaction sequence for segregation involves the generation of hydrogen chloride, the chloridization and volatilization of the metal chloride, and precipitation of the metal from the metal chloride in the vicinity of carbon. Iron segregation roasting offers a potential extraction solution for processing oxide deposits with complex mineralogy or waste streams such as Minette-type iron deposits, nickel laterites, ilmenite, red mud, electric arc furnace (EAF) dust, mill scale and slag. After subsequent magnetic separation, one is left with a high grade metallic iron powder which can be marketed for powder metallurgy or briquetted to serve as a direct reduced iron (DRI) product. The non-magnetic product is typically concentrated oxides including rutile, alumina, or oxides of V, P, and rare earths, etc. that may be economically recoverable with subsequent processing. While operating conditions vary for different metals, they share the requirements of an elevated operating temperature and a mixture of oxide ore, carbonaceous additive and a chloride additive in varying amounts all in a closed reactor to allow for reducing conditions and contain the volatile chlorides. This process is then followed by some form of physical separation. Testwork performed by the authors shows promising results that may aid in future development of the process. Segregation roasting of iron will likely never displace traditional beneficiation and ironmaking technologies; however, it has great potential in niche markets where traditional technologies have failed or current technologies generate substantial waste.

The report provides guidance for determining those environmental impacts associated with the surface mining of steeply pitching coal seams. In addition to the environmental impacts, four additional issues are addressed, namely (1) Time and motion studies of those coal mining systems employed in mining seams which pitch in excess of 250, (2) Assessment of those mining techniques, (3) Development of rationale for the mining methods employed, (4) Identification of the reclamation practices and determine whether these practices were in compliance with appropriate Federal and State regulations. Five surface mines located in three geologically distinct basins of the United States were analyzed during the period of August through November 1979. The three basins include the Hanna Basin of Wyoming, the North Park Basin of Colorado and the Southern Anthracite Field of Pennsylvania.

"HistoryThe Nanisivik mine began operation in October 1976 as the world's most northerly metal mine and the first permanent industrial project in the Canadian High Arctic. Located 700 km north of the Arctic Circle on Baffin Island's Strathcona Sound, exploration by Texasgulf Inc. between 1957 and 1970 had outlined the ore deposit. In 1974, Nanisivik Mines Ltd. was formed with Mineral Resources International, the Government of Canada, Metallgesellschaft and Billiton being shareholders, and Strathcona Mineral Services Ltd. providing project management. In 1996, Breakwater Resources purchased the mine from Alberta Energy Corporation Limited which had recently acquired the assets of then owners Conwest Exploration Ltd.Ore DepositThe main ore deposit is very flat, approximately 80 m in width and varying in thickness from 3 m to 16 m. The length of the deposit is approximately 3000 m with satellite zones located on the perimeter of the main zone. The economic mineralization is sphalerite with minor galena and silver. The sphalerite and galena are coarse grained and associated with pyrite as the main gangue component with minor inclusions pf dolomite and calcite within the deposit. The deposit being hosted in a permafi·ost environment creates a number of challenges. Dry drilling is employed in room and pillar production drilling. The permafrost aids in the stability of both the pillars and the back."

The paper addresses five questions concerning the economic of gold exploration in the western Canadian shield. Can historical footprints be used to project future gold prices for exploration planning? Experience suggests that gold price forecast are too clo ely tied to current market events to provide meaningful guidelines. What range of breakeven gold price will typically be required to ju tify gold exploration in Canada? Minimum price requirements. initially asses ed at $540 to $1080 per ounce, probably lie in the range of $480 to $760 per ounce (expressed in 1985 Canadian dollar). Within Canada, what role do regional conditions and taxation policies play in determining the viability of prospective gold exploration targets? Striking interprovincial differences are found to exist, given the same geological circum tance -Nova Scotia, ew Brunswick, and Quebec rank towards the top in term of motivating exploration, Briti h Columbia provides the least investment incentive, while Saskatchewan and Manitoba place around the middle of the Canadian league. How can minimum acceptable tonnage-grade conditions for gold targets in the western shield be established and, then, constructively applied to provide exploration planning guidelines? Minimum target conditions, realis tically defined in terms of a broad band of doubt, can be used judiciously to help balance the direct costs of uneconomic exploration with the opportunity costs associated with rejecting economic deposits. How does the average cost per ounce of gold discovered in the western shield compare with the overall Canadian experience? Average discovery costs for the we tern shield, apprai ed at $100 per ounce, are shown to compare favourably with the Canada-wide record.

I. INTRODUCTORY. INDUSTRIALLY, the most important service that geological science can now render to mining in the Upper Mississippi leadand zinc-fields is to devise some practical scheme whereby the productive ore-belts may be located with greater certainty than they have been in the past. Up to the present time there has been little service of this kind, and in spite of all that has been worked out concerning the geologic features of the region, and notwithstanding all that has been written about these ore-deposits, this particular phase of the subject has been, for some reason or other, the very one that has received the least consideration. The neglect by geologists in this respect has been all but complete. The following notes are suggestive of some practical solutions to the problems presented. As here suggested, the geologic relationships of the ore-bodies were surmised some years ago, though somewhat vaguely perhaps. No opportunity for securing critical data appeared until recent investigations of a private character were undertaken, which bad in view the extensive prospecting of undeveloped areas. Fresh from rather wide experiences of a decade in the principal mining-regions of four continents, and after a lenstrum's residence among the chief mining-camps of the West and of Mexico, under conditions which measured geologic hypotheses in meters and rigidly tested their values in, terms of dollars, the recent return to the Joplin field and a new survey of its ore-conditions were fraught with somewhat unexpected results. Aspects of the ore-deposition were presented of which previously there was no hint. Ten years' absence from the district had tended greatly to clarify former hazy impressions. It enabled many features, then only dimly outlined, to be considered more nearly in their true perspective and in their real relationships to their surroundings. Can international development NGOs and the mining industry find common ground and work together in the Third World? The Canadian Hunger Foundation/PARTNERS in Rural Development (CHF-PARTNERS) has, over the past forty years, implemented more than 800 rural community development projects in some 38 countries of Africa, Asia, and the Americas. Working with or for the Canadian mining industry offers both opportunities and risks. We can help a mining company ensure that the workers, their families and communities share adequately in the economic and social rewards from a mining operation in their area. We can contribute to the provision of sustainable livelihoods when an operation winds down. The company?s reputation as a good corporate citizen can be enhanced. On the other hand, mining companies and NGOs have generally very different values and missions. The risk of misunderstandings from conflicting motives and work practices is correspondingly high. Both partners must state their values and expectations clearly at the start of collaboration. The NGO must ensure that the company abides by acceptable ethical standards. It must not directly or indirectly subsidize a private company from its charitable donations. The mining company must satisfy itself that the NGO has the capacity, resources and experience to produce the results expected.

Line-of-sight radio control has received widespread acceptance for use in many mining methods because today’s technology offers improved economics and personnel safety. Significant advances in higher autonomy for mining machines are not currently seeing widespread use even though they offer great future potential. With autonomous capabilities being a longer-term goal, a logical sequence of advances based on TeleRemote control is proposed. Under Tele - Remote control, the operator is in direct control of the machine at all times. Three levels of Tele - Remote control systems are presented including line-of-sight, extended line-of-sight, and full load-haul-dump applications. Distributed control and sensing subsystems arranged in a vehicle control area network support incremental system expansion through the three levels of TeleRemote control and prepare the machine for integration of higher levels of automation as mature technology becomes available. This approach allows full exploitation of today’s mining automation technology with a flexible future growth path.

PART I. § 1. Introduction. After giving certain definitions, this paper gives the reasons which led to Roozeboom's form of the diagram of the freezing-point curves and general equilibrium of the iron-carbon compounds, steel and cast-iron ; and then those which led to replacing it with the present or double diagram, in which graphite is at all temperatures held to be the more stable and cementite the less stable (metastable) form of carbon. Next in § 10 the evidence supporting this greater stability of graphite is examined, then in § 17 that which seems to oppose it, and in § 22 a summary of the evidence is presented. The second part of the paper considers the topography of the graphite-iron diagram, rejecting summarily the solubility-lines based on the data of Charpy and Grenet and of Mannes-mann, on the ground that the data even on their face do not really point toward these lines, and that they are wholly incompetent to determine any solubility-lines whatsoever, because they report together with the dissolved carbon also an indeterminate quantity of cement-carbon, and because even such carbon as is actually dissolved, only in part represents the solubility of graphite, and in another and indeterminate part represents the solubility of cementite, or at least of carbon in presence of cementite as distinguished from graphite. It might be thought that graphite is but slightly soluble in iron, because of the absence of any suggestions of eutectoid graphite, corresponding to the eutectoid cementite of pearlite in very many cases in which the cast-iron seems to consist of ferrite and massive graphite only, and because of the micrographs of Goerens and Gutowsky. Bituminous coal mining in the United States is currently experiencing a period of rapid growth which began in the early 1960's. Future demands are conservatively predicted to rise to 700 million tons by 1980 and to anywhere between 1 to 3 billion tons by the turn of the century. This means a continuous expansion of coal production by a factor of at least two can be expected before the end of the century. Over the last few years, production from underground mining has decreased; yet it is about 50% of the total coal output. In the absence of any discovery of near surface coal deposits, and even after conceding that some deeper deposits can be surface mined with changes in technology it can be reasonably assumed that coal production from underground will continue to play an important part in solving the energy crisis.
