IN the paper entitled Block Caving at the King Mine (1), which was presented at the Annual General Meeting held in April, 1934, at Quebec, it was pointed out that, owing to certain conditions and financial restrictions, it was advisable to provide a temporary shaft. This was raised from the )00-ft. level to the bottom of the pit, and a 45-degree incline track was constructed up the face of the pit to surface. The temporary shaft and incline were within the ore-body, but were to be used only until such time as the new shaft-the subject of this paper-could be sunk and made ready for operation. After a careful study had been made of all available information pertaining to the ore-body, including examination of diamond-drill core records and geological data, a shaft location was selected well outside the ore-body. Further, since the crusher and dryer buildings are located over part of the ore-body, it was necessary to plan the removal of these buildings and to construct a new crushing and drying plant. This, and the new shaft, must operate in conjunction with the present mill and rock storage bin, which would continue robe used as formerly. No part of this programme, with the exception of drifting toward the shaft site, was started prior to 1937. More than usual detail on technical features is given in this paper in the hope that some parts of it may be of assistance to other members of the Institute who have to undertake somewhat similar work. The engineering and operating staff designed and supervised the work, while at the same time carrying on regular production in four mines at the rate of 12,000 tons of rock mined per day, the output at the King mine being at the rate of 140 tons per hour. No additional engineers were required.

"In response to numerous inquiries regarding tests and analyses of minerals and related inorganic materials; Bureau of Mines Information Circular 6999, ""Laboratories That Make Fire Assays, Analyses, and Tests on Ores, Minerals, Metals and Other Inorganic Substances,"" by C. W. Davis and M. W. von Bernewitz, was published .in 1938 and revised in 1939 (I. C. 6999R). In this paper on analytical and testing laboratories, the original text has been rewritten and expanded, and a table has been added, in which are listed laboratories prepared to offer a number of special testing services in addition to ordinary assays and chemical analyses. The arrangement of laboratories on, a geographical basis has been maintained.This circular is compiled as a public service, and none of the laboratories listed herein is recommended over any other,These lists were compiled from questionnaires sent to organizations whose work is connected with mineral and metallurgical testing. The response in general was very satisfactory, and the author takes this opportunity to express her appreciation to the officers of the listed laboratories for their cooperation.Acknowledgment is also made of the valuable assistance of the members of the technical staff particularly Morris Slaving/ of the Eastern Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines at College Park, Md., in the preparation of the questionnaire and technical descriptions.Many mineral samples are sent to government agencies in the National Capital with the request that they be assayed or chemically analyzed. It should be emphasized that there is no place in Washington D. C. where assays and quantitative analyses are made for the public b the Federal Government.Virtually all of the States maintain a bureau of mines, a geological survey, or some similar organization, frequently at the State University, where minerals found by residents of the State will be identified free of charge. Usually, a charge is made for assays. Specific tests, as on clays, are made by some of these offices.The Federal Bureau of Mines, although it attempts to avoid duplication of services rendered by State Bureaus, is always glad to give advice as to prospective markets. It does not compete with private assayers and chemists, but with respect to samples sent to its field laboratories, it does offer to identify them as far as this can be done by inspection and simple optical and chemical tests. This examination is usually sufficient to indicate whether the material has commercial value, or at least if the expense of an assay would be warranted. Except in connection with its own technical investigations, no assays or other special tests are made by the Bureau of Mines.The Federal Geological Survey and the National Museum also make simple tests of specimens as a public service. Neither of these bureaus nor the Bureau of Mines, however, can afford to render such services on long suites of specimens submitted by mineral dealers, well drillers, or others, when such work can be done regularly by commercial concerns."

"Large variability of ore types, escalating variables operating costs and increased throughput require large investment in sensors and systems in mineral processing operations. Mining and mineral processing plants collect and manage more data than a small city with much in real-time. The data is changing rapidly as internal and external conditions evolve. As corporations buy and sell assets, and reengineer their staff, the structure and tools that were used to understand this data is lost. This results in significant deterioration in the ability to maintain a smart operation. When data is recognized as a critical asset and managed as part of an infrastructure, it become a key enabler to help transform the entire operations. In many situations, all partners in business collaboration—such as join ventures, contract manufacturer, expert service providers, and operations and maintenance companies—need access to production and asset data. The emergence and maturation of Cloud technologies make it possible to easily connect the plants to external equipment suppliers and operational support service.This paper will share examples of how mineral processors have adopted new data strategies such as self-service business intelligence, cloud computing and internal/external collaboration.INTRODUCTIONOne of the main challenges in mineral and metallurgical processing plants is effective energy and water management. The lowering of ore grades requires higher throughputs while the ores are getting more complex with variable mineralogical compositions. Electrical energy supply is becoming a restriction in many countries. Rising water management costs has a direct impact on the profitability of the operations. Grade recovery versus energy consumption in copper production for both open pit and underground mines has been described by Fuerstenau (2001). Comminution uses over 55% of the energy to produce nonferrous metals while other operations require much less energy (Nelson, Richins, & Lelinski, 2013)."

"Conventional electrowinning (EW) of nickel from sulfate electrolytes is complicated by several factors including the requirement for a diaphragm cell to separate the anolyte and catholyte and the need to minimize nickel mist emissions. Developed and commercialized by emewCorporation, this novel process electrowins high purity nickel cathode (99.5%) from copper refinery bleed streams using the proprietary emew vortex EW technology. The emew nickel process incorporates high flow rate in an enclosed cylindrical EW cell operating at high current densities that overcomes the challenges of conventional nickel EW and completely eliminates the risk of nickel mist emissions. The tubular cathodes are easily harvested and mitigate the effect of plating stresses inherent in nickel EW. The present paper describes the emew nickel process and its most recent application to copper refinery bleed streams at full-scale.INTRODUCTION To meet the stringent demand of customers, nickel producers are giving prime importance to production of high purity nickel cathodes. The major challenge for refineries is to improve cathode quality and appearance despite fluctuating electrolyte impurity levels. The basis of achieving good quality cathode includes the control of electrolyte impurities and consistency of specific process conditions. The commercial operation of emew nickel technology has been successfully implemented and has demonstrated the ability to produce high quality nickel cathode from refinery bleeds. This paper emphasizes the importance of upstream impurity removal to achieve the required nickel emew feed composition by evaluating the benefits of using selective precipitation as a purification scheme with the aim of improving the overall nickel recovery while ensuring suitable nickel concentration in the advanced electrolyte is achieved. Nickel electrowinning is similar to other electrowinning processes that employ insoluble metal anodes & cathodes. It requires the passage of direct current between two electrodes that are immersed in a conductive, aqueous solution of nickel salts. For the recovery of nickel from solution, the most common methods are electrowinning and hydrogen reduction. Electrowinning usually occurs from sulfate, chloride or mixed sulfate/chloride electrolytes. In sulfate electrolytes, nickel electrowinning cells are normally designed to achieve specific criteria as outlined below (Robinson & Tuppa, 2002):"

El presente texto describe los problemas de deforestación, precios e importaciones de mercurio en la minera artesanal aurífera de Madre de Dios. En ese sentido, a medida que la interconexión de la economia mundial avanza, es más difícil que países en desarrollo aprovechen las fuerzas lucrativas de la demanda global para lograr una sostenibilidad social y ambiental. En consecuencia, los países en desarrollo contienen un peso ambiental desigual en relación con los países desarrollados qie importan materias primas. Como ejemplo de ello, el precio del oro aumentó, así como la minería aurífera informal y no industrial en los países en los países en desarrollo y el mal manejo del mercurio en el uso del oro, repercutió en el medio ambiente y los mismos mineros, al igual que el problema de la deforestación. Por ello, se plantea un programa para enfrentar dchos problemas en la región de Madre de Dios y reducir el aumento de la minería informal.

Community members’ sources of information about companies’ social investments are often influenced by the messages in a variety of communication channels, such as newspapers, television and social media. In this sea of communication channels, corporate communications may not always have the desired effect in influencing community perceptions. This paper explores the efficacy of communication between mining companies and communities in Chile through content analysis of corporate sustainability reports and newspaper reporting.Chilean media reporting between 2005 and 2013 is examined to identify community perceptions of corporate social investments made by mining companies. Content within the Chilean newspapers El Mercurio (national) and Soy Chile (regional) is contrasted with content from corporate sustainability reports published by The National Copper Corporation of Chile (Codelco) and Barrick Gold Corporation, Canada (Barrick) for the same period. The objective is to identify differences in the way that corporate social investments are reported by companies in sustainable development reporting and by media in newspapers.Overall, the study demonstrates that the media’s framing and reporting of corporate activities was more negative than positive. Moreover, media outlets tended to focus upon the ‘negative impacts’ or ‘damage’ to communities brought about by mining developments. Conversely, companies’ public communications were largely focused upon direct improvements in livelihoods (health, education, etc) of neighbouring communities. This preliminary study provides a baseline for the development of new formats of effective communication with neighbouring communities. The paper advocates for an increase in participatory mechanisms with affected parties, which could lead towards a greater mutual understanding of the impacts and draw parties closer together.CITATION:Tapia Rivera, R, Kirsch, P A and Clark, P, 2014. The compensation-insurance rates for quarrying in North Carolina are 11 times higher than for the State?s major industry, textiles. Some operators are willing to accept this as representing the ratio of existing hazards. This was not true of the management of the Southern Aggregates Corporation, and in 1935 it tools definite steps to correct the idea of its local officials and employees that loss of life and limb in quarries is inevitable. Ground control failures are one of the main causes of accidents in the underground stone mining industry. Some of the fundamental tools for rockfall hazard identification are related to rock mass characterization and geotechnical discontinuity mapping. Recent technological advances in these methods are related to remote sensing techniques and point cloud processing software for automated discontinuity mapping. Remote sensing techniques, such as LiDAR and photogrammetry, generate multimillion point clouds with millimetric precision, capturing the structure of the rock mass. The automated point cloud processing tools offer alternative algorithm-based methods to characterize and map these discontinuities. However, their applicability is constrained by multiple factors such as site specific conditions of the rock mass and the parameters used within the mapping algorithms. This paper evaluates the performance of automated discontinuity extraction software compared with manual virtual discontinuity mapping. Sampling windows from laser-scanned sections in an underground limestone mine are defined and mapped using discontinuity set extractor (DSE). Results from the virtual discontinuity software are compared with manually extracted fractures from I-Site based on reviewing orientation, trace length, spacing, number of extracted discontinuities, and processing time. The analysis determined that the automated mapping algorithm was able to identify the same discontinuity sets that had been manually mapped. The automated mapping software mapped an excessive amount of smaller fractures, which caused the comparison of both mapping techniques to be unsuccessful in terms of trace length and spacing.

"GeneralA NOT INCONSIDERABLE proportion of the Canadian economy is dependent on the coal mining industry. This is particularly true of the eastern portion of Canada and especially so of the ( authors') province of Nova Scotia. Much has been said about the trying economic straits of the coal industry in Nova Scotia ( 1), faced, as it is, with difficult mining problems, with considerable distance from large markets, and with •competition from other (and usually foreign) fuels. It is of particular interest, at this time, therefore, to discuss one of the larger outlets for coal -that of the production of metallurgical coke.Scope of PaperWhile the title of this paper indicates that it deals with Metallurgical Coke in Canada, the authors beg leave to treat the Canadian industry very briefly and to deal specifically with coal, •coke, and smelting problems with which they are familiar, namely, the operation of the Dominion Steel and Coal Corporation in the Sydney, N.S., area. Low metal prices and increasingly stringent environmental regulations, coupled with the threat of higher governmental royalties are adversely affecting both existing and new operations. Existing operations must therefore be run at maximum operating efficiencies to enable mining companies to survive and grow. Well planned and executed "outsider" reviews can help achieve this goal. Many mine managers and those who direct them resist the idea of "outsider" reviews for a variety of reasons, some valid and some not. Those managers who do bring in the "outsiders" are nearly unanimous in reporting that the exercise in self-discipline was well worth the pain and effort and repaid the cost many times over. This paper makes a strong case for "outsider" reviews and gives recommendations on the kinds of reviews to undertake. The authors draw upon their nearly 70 years combined experience, much of which has been in operations.

Changes in copper extraction from 1960 till today are documented. The top ten changes have been: (a) replacement of reverberatory smelting by high intensity oxygen rich smelting (b) growth of the Outokumpu flash smelting to over 50% of the world's smelting capacity (c) successful development of single furnace coppermaking but only for low slag fall concentrates (d) replacement of the batch Peirce-Smith converter by continuous converting, but only in a few cases (e) increased SO2 capture throughout the industry, mainly-as sulfuric acid (f) development of low initiation temperature `big bight' Cs catalysts for treating the continuous high-SO2 strength gases from continuous smelting/converting (g) complete replacement of reverberatory anode scrap and cathode melting furnaces by the Asarco shaft furnace (h) adoption of stainless steel permanent cathodes and automated stripping technology for electrorefining and electrowinning (i) complete elimination of wire bar casting by continuous bar casting/rod rolling (j) development and adoption of extractants for turning weak impure leach solutions into strong pure electrolytes. It is postulated that the biggest possible change over the next 20 years would be complete replacement of smelting/converting by hydrometallurgical processing. However, this seems unlikely due to copper purity, precious metal recovery, and economic concerns. The increasing value of sulfuric acid to many copper companies gives chalcopyrite smelting/oxide-supergene leaching a nice synergy especially with the energy credits now coming from continuous smelters, and their acid plants.

"This paper summarizes the results of numerical studies on drift stability in moderately jointed rock masses. It investigates the relative pertinence of geomechanical factors such as joint orientation, spacing and stress regime. This is undertaken using a distinct element model and a series of parametric studies. IntroductionIn evaluating the stability of drifts in jointed rock, it is often necessary to compromise by employing models that capture the complexity of the rock mass, but which are still simple enough to allow for their routine implementation. The distinct element method can arguably provide an eloquent method to accomplish this. This paper explores the applicability of the method by means of a parametric study aiming to identify the dominant factors that influence the stability of drifts in moderately jointed rock. To this end a commercially available 2D distinct element numerical model was used. A series of techniques are presented in an effort to quantify the results of any instability predicted by the model.This paper also demonstrates a case study where a 3D joint network model was integrated into the distinct analysis software package. The advantages, as well as the current limitations of this approach, are discussed."

1. The investigation shows that the Coal Creek has been the most productive, bed in Campbell County and contains the largest recoverable reserves of coal. The Pewee, Red Ash, and Jullico have been relatively productive beds and contain appreciable recoverable reserves of coal. The Blue Gem also has been productive in the past, but available information indicates that most of the remaining coal is Less than 28 inches thick. The Big Mary has relatively large reserves over 28 inches thick, but the coal is high in ash and sulfur. Thick partings in the Windrock bed have discouraged mining in that bed. The Poplar Creek and Rex beds generally are below drainage, and large areas have been excluded from the reserve estimate, Reserves in the Walnut Mountain bed will be difficult to mine due to the irregu¬lar thickness and lack of continuity of the bed. Estimated coal reserves are- small in the remaining five beds. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves of coal, based on a minimum bed thickness of 14 inches and on 1,800 short tons per acre-Foot of coal in place, are estimated to be 398 million tons as of January 1, 1953, o? this total, 267 million tons is in beds 28 inches and more thick. Areas in each bed were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics are too meager to make an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, these should be added to the total estimated reserves.

Molybdenum resources around the world are mainly associated with porphyry copper ores. Molybdenite (MoS2) is the main Mo mineral that has rhenium in its crystal lattice. This paper investigates the recovery of rhenium and molybdenum from a molybdenite concentrate using a hydrometallurgical treatment method. The molybdenite concentrate is leached with nitric acid and subjected to solvent extraction to recover and separate rhenium and molybdenum from the leached liquor. The effects of pH and the chemicals? concentration on extraction characteristics of Mo and Re are investigated to define the best condition for selective extraction of these metals. The tested leached liquor contained of 8.2 g/L Mo, 1.5 g/L Fe, 0.5 g/L Cu and 60 ppm Re. A good extraction efficiency, up to 94%, was achieved for Re from the leached liquor, where the extraction of other metals, such as Fe and Cu, was negligible. In particular, at very low pH, rhenium is extracted selectively from solution, while the extraction of molybdenum is less than 10%. After removing rhenium, molybdenum was extracted with LIX984N. The selectivity of molybdenum extraction over other metals in solution was significant. Nearly 94% of molybdenum can be extracted from the solution at a pH value of -0.12, without any interference from other metal ions such as copper and iron.

Three legacy coalbed methane production wells have been converted to injection wells for a one-year carbon dioxide (CO2) injection test to evaluate the potential for CO2 storage in the coal reservoir and the potential for enhanced gas production at offset wells. The injection reservoir is composed of 15–20 individual coal seams with an average thickness of 30 cm (1.0 ft), spanning a depth range of approximately 240 (800 ft) to 670 m (2200 ft).The monitoring program for this test includes gas and water sampling of the three injection wells, three dedicated monitoring wells and approximately 20 offset production wells. Key technologies used for monitoring the study area include time-lapse GPS and interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) acquisitions for surface deformation measurement, a 28-station buried passive microseismic monitoring array, real-time downhole pressure and temperature sensing and perfluorocarbon tracer fluids, which will be injected with the CO2 stream. The schedule for the monitoring program includes pre- (baseline), during- and post-injection data collection. This schedule will allow data to be analysed for time-lapse changes and trends, which are important for understanding the migration of gas and fluid phases in the reservoir – including CO2, methane, other hydrocarbons and water – and for observing the changing distributions of reservoir pressures and stresses.The results of the monitoring efforts for this study have implications for monitoring mining operations. The combined use of GPS and InSAR geospatial data to evaluate elevation changes across and beyond the study area may prove to be an accurate option for measuring surface deformation, including mining-induced subsidence, in unstable terrain. Long-term microseismic monitoring using high-sensitivity instruments has several applications in mining operations, including rock stability monitoring, production monitoring and miner location detection during emergencies. The Merlin project is situated 130 km south of Cloncurry in North West Queensland, Australia. It is located within the Pre-Cambrian Mt Isa Inlier and is grouped within the Eastern Fold Belt. The host rocks are metasedimentary rocks of the Proterozoic Kuridala and Staveley Formations adjacent to the Mount Dore Granite.Merlin zone represents part of the Mount Dore polymetallic deposit containing copper, zinc, silver, gold, lead, cobalt and most recently has been found to host molybdenum mineralisation. This is intimately associated with economic grades of rhenium, a naturally occurring metal that is an important component of high temperature aircraft engines. The host rock sequence is a 200 m thick zone of metasediments sandwiched between competent granite in the hanging wall and brittle quartzite in the foot wall. A distinct shear marks the contact between the granite and metasediments. The host rocks are comprised of three main rock types: black shale, phyllite and altered banded calc-silicate.Mineralisation dips to the east at approximately 45° in a package of fine grained pelites and banded calc-silicates. The top 150 m of the sequence is typified by black shale and phyllite. The lower 50 m is typified by pink banded calc-silicate. The main molybdenite zone is located at and parallel to the pelite-calc-silicate contact. Down dip, the zone splits into two or three veins hosted by the calc-silicate rock suite and haloed by thin, steep dipping, stylolitic molybdenite veinlets.The deposit was discovered in 2008 by routine infill reverse circulation sampling conducted for the Mount Dore copper deposit. One hole penetrated below the main target Cu horizon and intersected visible molybdenite. During 2009 and 2010 a 50 × 50 m diamond drill pattern delineated a total mineral resource of 6.7 Mt @ 1.3 per cent Mo, 23g/t Re, 0.3 per cent Cu (mostly Indicated Mineral Resource with minor Inferred Mineral Resource). The resource has been estimated using ordinary kriging within grade domains. Access to the deposit has commenced via a decline and production through the nearby Osborne flotation concentrator (70 km south) is expected in 2012. All facilities and resources are fully owned and operated by Ivanhoe Australia Limited, a public listed company on the Australian and Toronto stock exchanges.
