The purpose of the study described in this publication is to develop methods for recovering simple master alloys or single metal components from discarded and scrapped S-816 alloy, The Bureau of Mines started this investigation late in 1955 after the need became apparent for a method of reclaiming high-temperature alloys from an ever-increasing accumulation of rejected and wornout jet engine turbine buckets. Laboratory studies showed the following: (1) Pyrometallurgical separations are not selective enough, (2) several methods can be used for effective chemical dissolution of the major constituents of the alloy, (3) a master alloy or complex salts of cobalt and nickel can be separated, (4) chromium, contaminated by several other metals, may be segregated, and (5) more time and effort need to be expended in separating the minor constituents and improving the purity of the major metals removed. Difficult and incomplete chemical separations were attributed to the complexity of alloy composition, as were the long tedious chemical analyses o' products. For determination of several of the metallic components, standard methods of separation and routine analytical procedures had to be considerably modified to achieve satisfactory results. The overall technical problems involved in separating S-816 components do not appear to be insurmountable; however, refinement of several of the methods used in this investigation is desirable.

Henty Gold Mine is an underground operation producing 100 000 ounces of gold per annum. The original mining method used was flatbacking with paste fill. However, a non-entry method û uphole benching û was introduced in 1998 to recover the deteriorating crown pillars. Initial challenges were encountered, including poor drilling accuracy, difficulty in charging holes and poor rise performance. These challenges were overcome by a Continuous Improvement Team, consisting of mining engineers, supervisors and miners. Following this, the Team implemented further changes aimed at reducing ore loss and dilution. A second area addressed by the Team was development blasting, where innovative detonator technology known as the ExelTM DevelDetTM was introduced and rapidly accepted by the operators. Continued use of the ExelTM DevelDetTM resulted in a number of benefits, such as easier bogging, less perimeter damage, faster charging and hook-up and decreased wastage. Finally, improvements were made in the area of explosive handling, where competency-based training of operators was conducted and manual handling of ANFO has been significantly reduced by the introduction of the MiniMoverTM into the underground magazine.

He is author, golf-player, musician, public speaker, philatelist, German scholar, and has been a school teacher; but these are incidental. Oliver Ralston's professional forte might be described as beneficiating solid minerals and he has dealt in an important way with practically all of them. To this work he has brought a fertile mind stimulated by keen imagination but kept on the track by a sense of economic balance. An indication of his versatility is evidenced by his career with the Bureau of Mines, which he first joined in 1912, when the Bureau was just one year old. Except for two excursions into industry-Hooker Electro Chemical Co. (1917-20) and United Verde Copper Co. (1928 to 1935)-his entire professional career has been with the Bureau.

"This paper presents a series of case studies where spherical camera photographs were used to generate 3D shaft models using photogrammetric methods. The shaft models were, checked for accuracy by comparing them to overlapping laser scan data, provided survey data or idealized shaft models. Short lengths of model were found to more accurately reproduce the shaft surface, with a best observed accuracy of 8 mm. Longer models encountered errors with accumulated errors as exhibited by slight deviations from vertical or slightly conical model shape. At present, the models are considered acceptable for general documentation and gross change detection. INTRODUCTION Shaft inspections are required by mining regulations in many jurisdictions and are commonly completed by trained mine personnel via visual inspections. This can be time consuming and prone to errors due to lapses in attention and the rapid travel rate required to inspect an entire shaft in a reasonable amount of time. Similarly, because of the time requirements, there can be impacts on other aspects of mining as a result of occupying the shaft for inspections. Spherical cameras with supplemental light systems offer a modern addition or alternative to conventional inspections. These cameras can be lowered relatively quickly to collect high definition, fully illuminated videos of the shaft that can be reviewed in detail later while the shaft returns to service (Gillis et.al., 2019). The use of cameras offers a further opportunity for valuable survey data generation from the same original data stream. The video data can be processed into three-dimensional (3D) models using Structure-from-Motion (Westoby et al., 2012) based photogrammetric methods. Depending on the quality of the source video and availability of survey control (required for all photogrammetry models) these models can be very accurate. Shaft surveying can be conducted with traditional theodolite methods but such surveys are time consuming and limited in their data density. Similarly, scans can be completed using conventional terrestrial laser scanners, but this requires a significant number of distinct setups to provide sufficient overlap between scans. Work is being conducted both on the laser scanning (SLAM, Durrant-Whyte & Bailey, 2006) and photogrammetry fronts towards kinetic scanning (Benecke, 2017) systems. The major advancement which is permitting these kinetic systems is Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs) which can provide localization in GPS denied environments and reduce errors associated with the open traverse format associated with shaft scanning."

"The paper is introduced by an examination of the factors which have led to the present world-wide interest in charging preheated coal to coke ovens. Various possible methods of preheating and charging the coal are considered and reasons are given for the adoption of the methods chosen. The design of the pilot preheating plant for the British Coke Research Association is discussed and its influence on the design of the commercial units for the South African Iron and Steel Corporation's plant at Pretoria and the British Steel Corporation's plant at Beighton are explained. Operating procedures on the pilot plant are described, particularly with regard to the charging of the preheated coal. Design features of the commercial installations, engineered by Simon-Carves Ltd., are explained with emphasis on the built-in safety of the control system of the preheating plant, and the particular problems associated with the erection of such plants on working coke oven batteries. Commissioning and operating procedures are described and the problems associated with the integration of the preheating plant into the normal pushing schedule of the plant are discussed. Preliminary operating results with regard to the effect of preheating on coal throughput on the commercial plants and on the properties of the coke produced are given."

Using powerful database management software, nested-field analysis and microanalysis of narratives have been made of West Virginia accident data, resulting in a new approach for targeting and prioritizing safety interventions by county, mine size, specific mine, job title, type injury, etc. and combinations of these parameters. The analyses have been useful in focusing training and discussion sessions on specific work problems, trends, conditions, and situations for targeted groups of miners. Application of the technique will be presented in this paper, along with comparisons of various mine performance measures.

The reaction between calcined dolomite and ferrosilicon has been studies with the aim of developing a continuous process for magnesium production. Small-scale tests were made in vacuum retorts similar to those used in the vacuum retort process as developed by Pidgeon (1)2/ and operated during the period of World War II in several Government-owned plants. Factors investigated with respect to the silicon efficiency were the reaction temperature, reaction time, amount of excess dolomite in the charge, and effect of adding sodium silicate to the charge to serve as a binder. Additional laboratory tests were made to study the reaction at elevated temperature but at atmospheric pressure. Silicon efficiencies exceeding 80 percent were found to result when operating in the temperature range from 1,750° to 1,800° C. for periods of 20 to 30 minutes.

Newmont Ghana Gold Limited's Ahafo Operation has matured from its project ramp up stage into steady state operations after three years of operation. Management focus has shifted from addressing construction and commissioning problems to optimization and improvement. This focus change has coincided with the introduction by Newmont of a Continuous Improvement (CI) program across the company which provided a project management methodology that can be used in the execution of smaller scale projects. This paper focuses on the application of CI principles at the Ahafo Plant through the discussion of several case studies that demonstrate how these principles are applied.

Didipio gold-copper mine operation is situated in the island of Luzon, approximately 270 km north of Manila in the Philippines, in an area of high seasonal rainfall. The hydrogeological water flow model implied that there would be high connectivity between regional structures and underground operations. This model predicted that underground mine groundwater inflows were expected to quickly rise as the decline progressed to a peak of 510 L/s. Designing a capital pump station to deal with 510 L/s has its own challenges, however developing the decline down to the required level, always dealing with 300 L/s of water and constructing the pump station is extremely challenging and required a robust water management plan and mine design. When dealing with expected high volumes of water, underground mine design and scheduling plays a key role in protecting electrical infrastructure, equipment, secondary pumps, and the decline from flooding. A good drainage system and controlled dewatering plan is essential for safety and progress. This paper details the dewatering techniques and mine designs required to accomplish decline development with high water inflows as used in the Didipio project. It will describe the learnings and outcomes that are achievable with a flexible design, as new structures are mapped, and water intersections are increased. It also highlights the potential for adaptability in mine planning to provide evolving improvements or to evade problems that are expected from the constant reconciliation of data recorded during development.

This paper is one of a series dealing with special mining problems and forming part of a general study of mining, methods and costs being conducted under direction of the Bureau of Mines. A considerable part of the material assembled and discussed in this paper has been gathered from articles on individual mines written by consulting engineers to the bureau who are engaged in active mine operation at the properties described, while other data have been taken from the technical press or gathered from personal observations. OBJECT AND SCOPE OF PAPER C. F. Jackson4 ha[-] pointed out that underground transportation (tramming, haulage, and hoisting) absorbs an appreciable percentage of the total underground cost of most mines, averaging for different methods of mining 12.9 to 28.4 per cent of the total underground cost. In general the percentage of cost accounted for by transportation was shown to be highest for the low-cost mining methods.

A nearly 305-m- (1,000-ft-) wide sandstone channel was projected to run through the mid panel area of a 457-m- (1,500-ft-) wide longwall panel in a southwestern Pennsylvania coal mine. This sandstone channel was known to cause serious longwallface roof control problems in the mine?s B-panel area in 1998 and 1999; and most recently, it induced many large face cavities and caused a substantial production delay in the preceding panel. For the two B panels mined in 1998 and 1999, hydraulic fracturing of the massive sandstone was conducted to facilitate better caving, thus relieving cantilever compressive stress at the longwall face. Vastly improved longwall face condition was observed and four weeks of mining delay due to bad roof conditions were eliminated. The implementation of the hydraulic fracturing technique, results of underground observation and measurement, and results of numerical modeling were summarized in a paper presented in the 20th International Conference on Ground Control (Su et al., 2001). This article is a summary of the activities that took place during a four-month period (October 2011 through February 2012) at a Consol Energy longwall mine southwestern Pennsylvania to improve face conditions and safety of underground personnel during mining of the 457-m- (1,500-ft-) wide longwall panel. The elevated concern for safety was driven by adverse face conditions encountered while mining the preceding longwall panel. Many of the problems were attributed to a thick and massive sandstone channel. A joint task force consisting of coal operations engineering, Pennsylvania operations engineering and CNX Gas personnel was formed in August 2011, which recommended drilling four hydraulic fracturing holes along the center axis of the sandstone channel to reduce pressure and improve face conditions at the longwall face. In 1927 the Carbonization Committee of the American Gas Association proposed cooperation with the Bureau of Mines in the development of suitable methods for determining the carbonizing properties of American coals. It was further proposed to apply these methods in the testing of representative coals and to make the information obtained available to the public through Government publications. A cooperative agreement was signed whereby the Gas Association contributed part of the funds necessary for beginning the project and appointed a committee to consult and advise the Bureau in the work. The Advisory Committee has been reappointed each year, and the Bureau has had the benefit of its advice. The composition and carbonizing properties of 33 coals previously tested have been given in technical papers of the Bureau of Mines and in short reports published for the most part in the Proceedings of the American Gas Association. A complete list of publications on the work previous to 1937 is appended to this report. The present report gives the composition and carbonizing properties of seven additional coals from West Virginia. The data include results of blending tests in which Beckley led low-volatile coal was used with all the high-volatile coals except the Alma coal, with which Pocahontas No. 4 coal was used.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report is intended to assist coal mine operators in the selection of longwall supports by providing advanced guidelines for performance testing and standardized test documentation to facilitate support comparisons. These advanced guidelines culminate in a series of proposed tests to evaluate (1) support resistance characteristics, (2) stiffness characteristics, (3) leg mechanics, (4) stability, (5) load transfer mechanics, and (6) structural integrity. The Bureau has conducted extensive studies on shield mechanics to identify boundary conditions that induce loading in support components, which is often not included in current testing techniques. This report discusses influential parameters that affect support behavior and provides insight into how components are loaded and what conditions produce the most severe loading. Testing philosophies and techniques in both active and static frames are discussed. Proper methods for determining support resistance are described and instrumentation requirements for advanced performance testing are provided.

[Steel tanks often corrode rapidly in oil fields where the gas produced with crude petroleum contains an appreciable quantity of hydrogen sulphide. In many instances working tanks have been discarded after only six months of service because of failure induced by corrosion. Aluminum has been used for some time in the fabrication of certain equipment incidental to the handling of oils containing hydrogen sulphide L; as in solution, and has exhibited no serious corrosive action. These uses indicated that aluminum tanks might be equally effective in counteracting hydrogen sulphide corrosion. Consequently, in the spring of 1928, an all-aluminum stock tank of 500 carrels capacity and a "composite" tank of equal capacity, having a steel bottom and bottom ring and an aluminum top and top ring, were placed in service on the State-Lassiter lease of the Gulf Production Co. in Crane County, Tex. These tanks were under observation for one year, the test being sponsored by the Gulf Production Co., the Aluminum Co. of America, and the Parkersburg Rig and Real Co. The results of this preliminary test sustained the belief that aluminum is highly resistant to hydrogen sulphide gas and likewise indicated the type or grade of aluminum which could be most economically used for lease tankage. However, in this preliminary test the tanks were not subjected to contact with the large quantities of highly concentrated brines such as often are associated and produced with crude oil. Therefore, it was suggested by representatives of the Aluminum Co. that additional tests be made to include production conditions in which large quantities of brine would be handled, for pact experience had known that aluminum often is susceptible to the corrosive action of brines.]

Of 32 counties, the 12 which occupy the western half of the State contain all the known manganese deposits, These counties are Catron, Dona Ana, Grant, Hidalgo, Luna, Rio Arriba, Sandoval, Santa Fe, Sierra, Socorro, San Juan, and Taos. "INTRODUCTION Mine Ventilation has come a long way over the years. The main purpose of mine ventilation is to keep conditions in the mine safe for the worker so that the mine will be productive and profitable. Technological developments to the mine ventilation system itself and the development of mining techniques have helped improve the safety and productivity of the miners and the mine. Most of the developments to mine ventilation and to safety devices came as the result of serious mining disasters. Another effect of those mining disasters, especially in the late 19th century and after, was legislation to set specific safety standards for mines, especially in the underground coal mines. This paper will focus on the connection between mines disasters and the mine safety legislations promulgated because of those disasters. A BRIEF HISTORY OF MINE SAFETY LEGISLATION Mine legislation has a long history in the U.S. dating back well in the 1800’s. However, mine safety legislation is considerably newer. In 1891, the U.S. Congress passed the very first version of mine safety legislations setting up minimum safety standards. By today’s standards, the 1891 legislation was incredibly basic (7). It took a series of horrific mining disasters for Congress to take action a second time. In 1910, Congress established the Bureau of mines. The role of Bureau developed and changed over next 60 years. In 1995, Congress voted to disband it (27). Initially the Bureau was only charged with investigating and coming up with ways to reduce accidents in coal mines. It was not until 1941, when Congress formally allowed Bureau of Mines’ Inspectors into the mines. In 1947, the Congress enacted and adopted a set of federal safety regulations for the inspectors to follow (1). Finally, in 1952 Congress granted the Bureau of Mines the authority to inspect the mines and to issue citations and/or orders of withdrawals. This act was known as the 1952 Coal Act and the penalties were limited to civil penalties. It would take a couple more iterations of mine safety legislation for monetary and criminal penalties to be introduced (10). Up until 1966, mine safety legislation was directed primarily at underground coal mines and surface coal mines. Congress passed the Federal Metal and Nonmetallic Mine Safety Act of 1966, thus providing a set of standards for all mines to follow (1). The 1952 Coal Act was amended again to be the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969. This amendment was the beginning of modern mine safety legislation (13). In 1973, Congress created what can be considered the first ‘version’ of the modern day MSHA (Mine Safety and Health Administration). The initial version was the Mining Enforcement and Safety Administrations or MESA. Congress created MESA to act as the enforcement agency, relieving the Bureau of Mines of that responsibility so they could focus on their initial purpose, the development of countries natural resources (14). As mining industry grew, mine safety and health became a greater concern and priority. More efforts were put in legislating the industry. The Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977 provided the platform for today’s mine safety and health legislation. Under the Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977, also known as the Mine Act, MSHA came into being (1)."

Extraction and separation of La, Sm and Dy ions from acidic sulfate-phosphate solutions was investigated using a cation exchange extractant, bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl) phosphinic acid, CYANEX 272, in kerosene. The influence of shaking time, equilibrium pH, extractant, sulfate and phosphate ion concentrations, diluent type and temperature was studied. The extraction was found to be pH-dependent, and increasing the phosphate ion concentration inhibited the extraction which was found to be endothermic. The stoichiometry of the extracted metal species was found to be MOH.H2OHSO4H2A.A2. Aliphatic diluents were found to enhance the extraction compared to aromatic diluents. The results showed that there was a separation mode between the metal ions when varying the hydrogen ion and sulfate ion concentrations, under the used experimental conditions. The investigated process was used for the recovery of La, Sm and Dy from the acid solution resulting from the leaching of low-grade monazite.

Based on the mine safety and health administration (MSHA)reports, mining truck accidents are among the significant causes of fatalities in the mining industry. The major causes of haulage accidents can be divided into non-driving and driving factors, such as truck-related sudden failures and operator performance. Numerous parameters affect trucks' safe operation, but situational awareness plays a significant role. Due to the distinct structure of mining trucks, making them efficient for mining purposes, the operator has a very limited field of view (FOV), making them prone to accidents resulting in losing lives. The cabin's position blocks the truck's right and rear sides, creating several blind points around it. Aiming to test/train the operator's awareness of the surrounding, a proximity detection system is developed through a multiplayer virtual reality (VR) application to investigate the human factor in equipment collisions. The operators were examined and monitored when asked to conduct what exactly happened in the Marigold mine truck accident without being aware of the scenario. After receiving sound, vibration, and visual alarm warnings, their reaction and performance were analyzed. The platform is developed using the Unity game engine for HTC VIVE virtual reality goggles. An Omni-direction treadmill and a motion simulator platform are utilized for the player and dump truck operators. Fifteen students were monitored when driving the dump truck receiving/not receiving proximity detection alarms. None of them repeated the accident when receiving proximity alarms. Also, they found the visual alarm the most comfortable while driving the truck.

On April 10, 1958 a new 7500 long ton/day iron ore beneficiation plant went on stream producing an average of 3000 long-tons of high quality concentrate a day. Plant operates on two, 12-hour shifts is six days per week, The new mill end crust ink plant were built adjacent to the company's open pit dining operate on at Bomi Hills, Liberia. The mall is essentially a gravity concentrator employing crushing, and grinding to liberate the mineral values, followed by concentration in Humphreys spirals. The cleaner spiral tailings are re-ground and tabled to recover additional iron values.
