In many practical combustion systems ignition may occur through contact with hot burned gases . Such a process plays a vital role in flame stabilization on bluff bodies . It is also of importance in the ignition of firedamp by the hot spent gases of explosives used in mines . Also , in the communication of flames through narrow channels , a problem of practical importance in flameproofing electrical equipment , the propagation of the flame is essentially a reignition process in which hot burned gases are the agent of ignition . In the actual ignition problem a great variety of conditions may be visualized . Ignition may occur where pockets of hot gases are surrounded by cold explosive mixtures or where pockets of cold mixture may be surrounded by hot gases . Alternately , a flowing stream of combustible mixture may be initially in contact with another stream of hot combustion products , or a jet of hot gases may flow into a cold quiescent mixture ; the jet may be laminar or turbulent , continuous or discontinuous . The hot gas may also consist of the oxidant ( air for instance ) and the cold combustible pure fuel . This study by the Bureau of Mines is concerned only with ignition produced by a continuous jet of gas ( hot ) flowing into a practically quiescent cold mix- The investigation of ignition by bursts of hot gases or by turbulent jets is outside the scope of this report , and work performed on this phase of the problem has been published elsewhere

"This research is based on PANSTEEL 120t steelmaking converter technology to have the quantitative description of the time needed in uniform mixing of molten steel in the converter with the computer. In present work, the numerical simulation approach is used to analyze oxygen lance nozzle, the flow condition of oxygen and flow status of molten steel in the converter. The various oxygen jet flows that come out from different angles and the flow status of all kinds of jet flows in the converter have also been simulated. All of the simulation parameters are based on the specifically practical conditions according to the physical conditions of PANSTEEL 120 t steelmaking converter. Through numerical simulation, the angle parameter of the oxygen lance nozzle is 16 °. The optimized oxygen lance 536-16 has a good performance in industrial application. This kind of phenomenon shows that the ways and processes of numerical simulation in this research are right.IntroductionThe oxygen lance system is the significant process in semi-steel making converter. It's related to whether the converter or even the whole system can function well. While in actual production, many problems emerge in the process of using the former oxygen lance, such as re-drying, slopping, high lance position, dead burning and even blowing out. In continuous fast-paced process, the unstableness of oxygen lance will lead to speed droop or even stop pouring. Analysis shows that all these problems are not only related to the raw materials but also the design of oxygen lance. Bad oxygen lance's scorification kinetics condition and low content of FeOn in early slag are the direct factors that we cannot easily control in steelmaking at present [l]. Therefore, the good scorification kinetics condition which is related to nozzle has good influence on BOF steel making."

While this conference is dedicated to the examination of "Challenges in Mineral Processing," the broader aspect of the pursuit of this subject is Research and Development in the Mining Industry. When I was asked to speak at this symposium, I hesitated to accept. While my early schooling, training and professional occupation were in the field of this symposium, it was so long ago that I no longer feel competent to contribute anything of interest to you except perhaps for a limited historical perspective, which most of you probably already know. However, it might be worthwhile to explore the more general aspect of research and development from the viewpoint of management, as this is the stance from which I dealt with the subject for the last 30 years or so. While most managements generally have a positive view of research and development, few of the leaders in the mineral industry have actually had the personal experience of doing research for a long enough time to have obtained a full understanding and the feel for its place in the long-term technological innovation that our industry must foster. I graduated from the University of California in Berkeley with a Bachelor of Science degree and a major in metallurgy. It was during the great depression of the thirties, and it was difficult to obtain a practical job in the industry. I got a scholarship at the Montana School of Mines and received a Master of Science degree in ore dressing under Professor A. M. Gaudin, followed by another year with him pursuing research. Anyone who studied under him, or knew him well, would assert that this was a unique experience. Gaudin had a brilliant mind and a profound respect for science and the scientific method. He wished to know the scientific basis for every new technological appli-

Since 1963, Bureau of Mines Information Circular 8179 has served the mining industry as a fundamental safety guide in the field of blasting agents. In the intervening 14 years, many changes have occurred, and this report presents revised and new recommendations which recognize these changes. For example, AN-FO is now supplied mostly premixed, whereas in 1963 much of it was mixed by the blaster; aluminum metal (A1) and other fuels are now often added to AN-FO to increase strength, and flake aluminum powder is used as a sensitizer in water gels; and water gels or slurries that are now extensively used were just coming into practical use in 1963. To provide the widest possible margin of safety, some of the Bureau's recommendations are more stringent than existing regulations,

Aberfoyle Limited has developed the Hellyer complex base metal sulphide deposit located in North West Tasmania. As part of exploration and feasibility study, the ore was extensively tested, including trial milling, and was found to be very fine grained and to have poor flotation selectivity. Substantial innovation was required to produce saleable concentrates at acceptable recoveries and costs. Efforts were made to reduce operating costs, to improve metallurgical performance and to improve work organisation. These efforts were pursued both in design and in subsequent plant operation. This work has resulted in a very competitive operation with production costs in the lowest quartile of the industry. Examples of the measures taken are presented and the results are evidenced by improved plant performance since commissioning.

Reasons for reexamining underground mining include: 1. The assurance that more deep deposits of useful minerals will be found. 2. The existence of deeply covered deposits of industrial minerals near large markets where quarries are becoming depleted or are lacking. 3. Surface property values, zoning and other limitations on open pit mining. 4. Expectation that underground space will be increasingly used for transportation, power plants, storage and similar purposes. 5. The improvements which have been made in underground mining. During the last three or four decades many changes and improvements have been made underground. All underground construction and mining has benefitted to some extent but the effect on the productivity of labor employed with some methods- has changed little and the use of these methods has declined. Productivity of labor in other methods has increased substantially. The relative usefulness of mining methods has changed and a vital industry, bituminous coal, has been returned to health. In this paper, consideration is limited to nine methods used with high productivity during the period under review. These methods are not necessarily better than others but they may be considered the prime methods in the sense that, in our economy, many, low grade ores, coal and the principal industrial minerals could hardly be produced by less productive means.2 Although most of the examples cited are from mining as such., the first four methods discussed can be used for the construction of stable excavations of various' shapes in sound rock.

To evaluate the potential use of battery-powered vehicles, the Bureau of Mines studied the performance of a battery-powered truck propelled by a 9.6 kw dc motor in considerable detail under various driving conditions. Some of the factors investigated were: Gear ratios, payload (1,468 lb maximum), road grade, stops made per mile, and charging time. With the exception of some difficulty with brush wear, operation and maintenance of the truck was generally trouble-free. On range tests carrying an 868-lb payload a distance of about 50 miles at an average speed of about 19 mph in normal driving, the Bureau's battery-powered truck averaged 1.6 to 1.9 miles per ac kwhr input. Stop-and-go tests indicated that prospects for the use of battery-powered trucks in house delivery service within city limits are good; performance of the Bureau truck was sufficiently high for that type of service. The estimated power cost of 2.65 cents per mile while making 10 stops per mile was attractively low from the standpoint of fuel costs.

A great deal of effort is being expended by mineral processing engineers to acquire a basic knowledge of modelling and optimization techniques. Stimuli such as immediate process improvement, expanded process understanding, optimal flowsheet design and re-design, and the development of new and better control systems are goals which excite the imagination in terms of increased profits. To reach these goals, process models and efficient optimization strategies, regardless of their purpose, assume an important role. Consequently, few of us can argue that such efforts are of no value. The purpose of this paper is to review empirical modelling methods and optimization strategies which appear to be of value to mineral engineers.

"The Bureau of Mines has been investigating deposits of critical and essential minerals in the United States since 1939. Projects were set up on only the most promising properties.A preliminary examination of the Mount Hope mine was made in January 1943 by the Bureau's engineers, who recommended exploration by diamond drilling.The mine is in the unsurveyed portion of T. 22 N., R. 1 E., Mount Diablo base and meridian, south-central Eureka County, Nevada, 25 miles by road north of the village of Eureka. A partly graded and Graveled secondary road connects the mine and Eureka on U. S. Highway 50.Extensive sampling was done by the Bureau in February. 1943. Core drilling from the surface was started on March 15, 1944, and completed on April 2, 1545. The 16 holes drilled totaled 7,215 feet. The mining company also did extensive underground core drilling from April 21, 1944, to January 4, 1945. This report gives the results of core drilling supervised by the Bureau of Mines.The drilling program was designed to explore for extensions of the mineralization exposed in the mine workings. As a result of drilling, additional ore was found, and it is believed that this project has fulfilled the purpose for which it was planned.In its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization, of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to na¬tional security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. Knickerbocker, chief, analyzes samples of ore and performs beneficiation test. Both these branches are under the supervision of Dr. R. S. Dean, assists director.With respect to this report special acknowledgment is due to Charles W. Merriam of the United States Geological Survey for his interpretation of the Mount Hope mine Geology and his cooperation throughout the project; Col. Leverett Davis, former lessee of the property; K. IN the four mills of the Cerro de Pasco Copper Corp. in Peru, some 3000 tons of complex sulphide ores are treated daily, with four kinds of concentrates produced: copper, lead, zinc, and pyrite, each containing values in silver, gold, bismuth, and some other metals. Copper occurs in the various ores as chalcopyrite, enargite, tetrahedrite, tenantite, bournonite, and chalcocite; lead as galena; and zinc as sphalerite and marmatite. Small amounts of silver and tungsten minerals are also present. The gangue consist mainly of shale, quartzite, calcite, rhodochrosite, pyrite, and pyrrhotite. In general the values are freed with a relatively coarse grind, about 70 prr cent minus 200 mesh being the finest to which the pulps are ground. In Morococha and Casapalca however. sphalerite particles much finer than this contain inclusions of chalcopyrit r. At Cerro de Pasco the silver and gold are present in all sizes of the ground pyrite.

This is the fifth annual tabulation of mineral royalty information. This tabulation, like the previous editions, includes all of the earlier data. There are also 60 new entries. In addition to royalty information, some entries show the cost of purchased reserves. Two articles relative to the evaluation of minerals reserves appeared in December, 1986. R.H. Paschall (In the Aggregate, ME, p 1139) wrote a good article, although it lacked specific royalty data. However, this author takes exception to two ideas in Paschall's column. Paschall contends that the royalty rate does not affect the mineral appraisal. This present author could not disagree more. Paschall also claims the location of an industrial mineral deposit is the only serious or practical caveat in comparing royalties. Comments received here from readers helped make the list of caveats that are cited each year. The readers will decide which factors influence the mineral value for their commodities of interest. Paschall's point about the relationship of the parties who are negotiating a royalty agreement is important and very well taken. The other article, written by William Vernon (Pit and Quarry, December 1986), gives a step-by-step process on how to conduct a mineral appraisal. The article cites three reasons for an appraisal: transfer rights; collateral for a loan; and taxation. A fourth reason is to establish adequate compensation for reserves lost through condemnation. This author has appeared in several court cases where compensation for loss of mineral reserves through condemnation required a mineral appraisal. Royalty rate becomes an important factor in the appraisal process, although the Pit and Quarry article refers to that part of the valuation equation as "profitability." Both articles were well written and are recommended reading for those interested in mineral valuations. The same caveats that have appeared in previous columns relative to factors that influence the value of reserves are restated. The data in the table serve as a general reference and are not intended to present an absolute scale of reserves costs. Several factors influence the value of any mineral commodity. The factors include: • location/transportation - especially significant for most industrial minerals; • market conditions both for the commodity and the company acquiring the right to mine; • quality or grade of the deposit as it reflects the amount of processing/beneficiation necessary to produce the finished product; and • legislative restrictions and conditions for mining a given material at a given site. These and other factors will significantly influence the cost of reserves. The table shows the range of royalties and the variations in the basis of computing the fees. In a few instances, it gives the cost of acquired reserves based on purchase price and quantitative estimates of the material in place. The table lists the commodity in column 1, and the subsequent columns give: • the location by state, US geographic area, or Canadian province ; • the cost - R for royalty and P for purchased cost; • the year in which the lease or purchase agreement occurred; and • comments or footnotes for more information. The cost column requires more explanation. "The Cannon Mine, a joint venture between Asamera Minerals (the operator) and Breakwater Resources, is located in the centre of Washington state at the eastern base of the Cascade Mountains. The mine complex is located three blocks south of the city limits of Wenatchee, part of an urban area with a total population of 47 000. The closest residence is 350 feet from the mine portal.The B-Neath zone is a narrow, high-grade, downward extension of the southern tail of the mine's main ore body, the B-North zone. It also underlies the northernmost portion of the B-West zone (Fig . I) . The ore is usually reasonably competent but completely surrounded by very weak rock consisting of shear zone and unsilicified sandstones and siltstones.The zone has maximum dimensions of 420 ft in thickness, 500 ft in length , and 200 ft in width . The economic reserves extend from the 70-ft elevation (elevation above sea level) to the 630-ft elevation and consist of about 1.3 million tons of geologic reserves (proven and probable) at an average grade of 0.33 ounces per ton.Acquisition and ExplorationInitial DiscoveryThe initial discovery of the B-Neath zone was made by Tenneco Minerals during July through September, 1984. Their 22-hole surface drilling program consisted of 18 200 ft of drilling. Tenneco Minerals had acquired the 91/2 acre lease from United Mining Corporation.Asamera Minerals subsequently purchased Tenneco's lease in July, 1985; Tenneco retained a royalty position which was later purchased by Echo Bay Mining.Follow-up drilling by Asamera Minerals consisted of both surface and underground drilling. Eight surface holes (7200 ft) were drilled commencing in December, 1985. Following evaluation of the geologic data, an access drift was driven on strike along the top of the ore zone on the 500 level. Diamond drilling from this platform consisted of 17 200 ft in 79 holes."

In this paper, the producing process of using V2O3 as raw material to obtain vanadium nitride was analyzed through the means of thermodynamic. The analysis shows that conversion follows the principle of reduction step by step in the conversion process of V2O3. The temperature of the reaction system has prominent influence on the nitrogen content of products, and the reaction is very sensitive to temperature. As raising temperature, the fine grain structure of the nitrides is more evident, and the grain size of nitrides increases. At 1703K, the nitrogen content of the products tended to be constant after soaking over 3 hours.

AEROPHINE® 3418A is a unique sulfide mineral promoter produced by Cyanamid, based on phosphine (PH3) chemistry. It has proven effective as a collector for the sulfide minerals of copper and particularly lead (galena), as well as for secondary gold and silver values. AEROPHINE 3418A has widest application as a Cu and/or Pb collector for complex ores of Cu-Zn and Pb-Zn, which frequently have significant quantities of associated precious metal values. Advantages shown in the use of AEROPHINE 3418A are improved selectivities against Zn-and Fe-sulfides, increased precious metals recoveries, reduced total collector consumptions for Cu and/or Pb flotation, and increased flotation kinetics leading to higher recoveries of these values. Operating plant, pilot plant and laboratory test data from treat-ing different ores are presented, demonstrating the advantages in use and preferred application of AEROPHINE 3418A.

A survey of the interactions of large gas bubbles formed from top and bottom injection of gases into melts was carried out. Spherical cap bubbles were found not to produce much splash when they break through the bath free surface except for that formed by plunging of the-spout at its edges. In contrast, the bursting of balloons produces cavities which give rise to liquid jets being ejected from the bath free surface. The position of the balloons relative to the bath free surface is an important parameter in the formation of the liquid jet. It is found that the interactions of multiple bubbles close to the free surface is important in determining the splash behaviour of gas injected systems.

The United States,-the largest nickel consumer in the world, produces virtually no nickel from domestic ores. Dependence upon outside nickel - sources and increasing strategic, importance of nickel focused the attention of the United States on deposits within its boundries. The most likely domestic sources of nickel are low-grade oxide and silicate deposits, such as the Cle Clum deposit, Kittitas County, Wash., and the Riddle deposit, Douglas County, Oreg. The Federal Bureau of Mines, Northwest Electrodevelopment Laboratory, Albany, Oreg. has been investigating electric smelting of low-grade oxide and silicate nickel ores. These smelting studies have been on selective reduction to produce low-carbon ferronickel. Selective reduction is based upon the relative reducibility of: nickel, iron, and chromium, in the order named, when the charge contains insufficient carbon or other reductants to reduce the entire quantity of these metals present in the ore.

The paper describes the discovery, location and events concerning three types of heating which have occurred in recent years: a) in a district being salvaged, b) in the shaft pillar at an air-crossing, and c) in the gate side of a production district, all of which have occurred in the Beeston Seam at collieries in the deeper eastern part of the area. The paper describes the precautions, air sampling arrangements, training methods and codes of practice which have been adopted at collieries where spontaneous combustion is, or is likely to be, a hazard. The air samples taken from behind the stoppings following the sealing off of the salvaging district are examined and interpreted. The problem of effectively sealing off where more than two stoppings are required is made apparent. Other lessons have been learned as a result of these heatings and are described in the paper.

The Cable belt Company has been building single flight conveyors for a number of years. The simple design concepts of this type conveyor, introduced over thirty years ago, when distances of one to two miles were considered major advances in technology, remain relatively unchanged. Conveyors that are 6 to 20 miles (9.0 to 32 kilometers) long are being built and are presently in operation through- out the free world. The Cable Belt conveyor is not conventional in its construction. Cable welt differs from conventional troughed idler conveyors in that the driving medium and carrying medium are separated. Motion is provided by two endless steel cables running the length of the conveyor. The cables are driven by a single drive unit incorporating a differential gear which insures identical cable linear speeds and equal tension in both cables at all times. The belting is located and supported by "V" shaped shoeforms moulded to the belt which form a wedging action. The friction between the belting and rope is sufficient to prevent slippage (See figure 01).

Toughness testing of fibre reinforced concrete (FRC) at 28 days age is typically undertaken as part of quality control for the many applications where fibres are used in concrete, including shotcrete, tunnel segments, and cast-in-place tunnel linings. The performance achieved at 28 days is usually assumed to be retained with increasing age. However, as the average strength grade of concrete used in most tunnelling applications, including tunnel segments, has steadily increased over the last 20 years, this assumption is becoming increasingly unviable. This is because for some types of fibre the mode of post-crack fibre behaviour depends on the strength of the concrete and can change from a desirable high-energy pull-out mode to a low-energy rupture mode as the strength and age of concrete increases. This paper describes a series of trials performed over two years in which the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) C1609/C1609M beam tests were used to assess the performance of FRC reinforced with two widely used brands of steel and macro-synthetic fibre. The hooked-end steel fibres used for half the beams exhibited a dramatic fall in performance beyond 56 days age as the mode of failure changed from pull-out to rupture. The other fibre did not exhibit a fall in performance with age. This phenomenon highlights the need to quantify performance of FRC at much later ages when long-term performance is required, for example, to resist seismic events or changes in ground stress due to nearby excavations. As an alternative, a reduction factor may be applied to the performance of FRC mixes for which evidence of satisfactory long-term performance is not?available.CITATION:Bernard, E S, 2014. Top outlet sediments from the National Geochemical Survey of Australia have been extracted by a partial extraction method for over 50 elements including gold. The partial extraction results from this low-density survey show discrete coherent anomalies for Au in the vicinity of many of AustraliaÆs known goldfields, and in the vicinity of some minor gold occurrences. In several instances catchment outlet anomalies for Au have been recorded from areas not known to contain significant economic gold. Several large economic goldfields are shown to not produce anomalies in catchment outlet samples. A survey of overbank samples in the Swan Avon catchment of Western Australia at double the sampling density shows that low level anomalies (>1 ppb) can be traced back to source using overbank sediments. Follow-up of one of the Au anomalies at Kent River in previously regarded non-auriferous terrain (western Albany-Fraser Belt) indicates a non-economic, but perhaps geochemically significant, Au anomaly with associated pathfinders including palladium. This may indicate that further exploration of the western part of Albany Fraser Belt for Au is warranted. The combination of catchment overbank samples and partial analysis technique has been shown to be effective at locating the source of gold anomalies from initial low-density continental and regional surveys.CITATION:Mann, A, Davidson, A and de Caritat, P, 2013.
