This Institute, by nature of its charter, draws on various persons in the mining and metallurgical world of Australasia for its President from year to year, and consequently when the presidential address is given by one of these people the topic. which they generally select is a topic to which they are accustomed and on which they are able to speak with authority.As most of you know, my prime object in life has been concerned with steelmaking, so tonight you can steel yourself to the thought that you are going to be spoken to about steelmaking.Even if that were not the case, and were I not particularly interested in steelmaking, I think it would be appropriate to look at steelmaking in a broad sense on a basis of pure metallurgical interest, because the steel industry is going through as big a revolution today as it went through something over one hundred years ago when Bessemer made a theory become a fact.Bessemer, and as the Americans prefer to think Kelly, separately conceived the idea of blowing cold air through molten pig iron, and, contrary to the then general belief, this did not result in cooling of the metal but succeeded rather in heating it, and in burning out of the rather crude pig iron the impurities which prevented it from becoming a ductile metal.For many years before this, steel had been made in a very small painstaking way by what was known as the crucible process. This Bureau of Mines study is a listing of fuels -related projects that are presently under construction, planned, or proposed by various companies and organizations in the Western United States. The future facilities covered in this report fall into the following categories: coal mines and expansions to existing mines, electric powerplants and expansions to existing plants, coal conversion plants, waste-to-fuel conversion plants, oil shale projects, tar sands projects, potential geothermal facilities, coal slurry pipelines, railroads related to fuels development, uranium mines and expansions to existing mines, uranium mills and enrichment facilities, oil refineries, and natural gas processing plants. The projects are listed by state. Data concerning the company, location, planned markets, process type, initial operating date, capacity, water requirements, employment, current status, and other relevant information are included. Each project has been plotted on an accompanying state map. Due to present uncertainties concerning the fuels industry, some of the listed projects may never he constructed. No attempt has been made to determine the degree of certainty or viability of each project.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is investigating ways of enhancing the high-temperature softening-melting (HTSM) properties of domestic taconite pellets. These properties, which are important for determining the performance of pellets in blast furnaces, include pellet bed contraction, pressure drop, S-value (area under the pressure-temperature curve), and softening and metal-slag drainout temperatures. Experiments showed that HTSM properties were related to the physiochemical properties (fired strengths and reducibilities) of pellets containing different levels of limestone and dolomite flux. Flux additions resulted in slightly lower green and fired pellet strengths, but improved metallurgical properties, such as reducibility. The influence of reduction conditions on HTSM properties was evaluated by varying the pellet metallization starting temperature and the carbon monoxide content of the CO-N2 gas mixture. HTSM property change was more sensitive to flux addition levels when metallization was initiated at 1,100° C with 20 pct CO in the gas stream. The S-value and the metal-slag drainout temperature were found to be the best criteria for characterizing HTSM properties. The optimum flux addition level was about 8 pct (4 pct dolomite, 4 pct limestone) or a basicity of about 1. At higher flux levels, a higher metal-slag drainout temperature was obtained.

The problems associated with outliers and their adverse effects on resource estimation in deep level South African gold mines are presented, and solutions suggested in available literature are reviewed. Traditional Witwatersrand type outlier capping uses the 99th percentile grade as the upper limit, a somewhat blunt approach. The occurrence of high and low grade areas in mining operations and the estimation of resources using geostatistical techniques require that the assumption of stationarity be upheld. Honouring the stationarity of data requires that mining areas be subdivided into appropriately sized and spaced domains. In order to overcome high-grade conditionally biased block estimates, the overly strong influence of extreme grades is mitigated by using naturally occurring grade sub-domains, by identifying outliers within the grade sub-domains, allocating relevant capping limits, and weighting them in a post-estimation process to. Rather than applying a capping value across a domain it applies a maximum cap based on the extreme value and its range of influence; the method also ensures that relevant capping occurs even in lower grade sub-domains. The proposed method for capping outliers recognises that metal contained in high grade chip samples should not be over-capped, and based on the grade of surrounding samples. The post-processing method of capping outliers does not interfere with the kriging equations. The method is simple, elegant, and can be easily applied. An advantage is that the output from the kriging process is not overwritten, allowing for comparison between original kriging results and post-processing results.

THIS paper is a description of the milling practice and metallurgy at the Moneta Porcupine mine, Timmins, Ontario. The results obtained with an all-cyanide circuit and later with flotation followed by cyanidation are described. The ?investigation which prompted the various changes in milling practice have also been dealt with. Moneta ore is possibly the most refractory now being milled in the Porcupine district. This is due to the ultra fine state in which the gold occurs and to its intimate association with pyrite. No doubt there is ore of similar characteristics on the neighbouring properties but it probably forms only a small portion of the tonnage being mined, whereas at Moneta the bulk of the ore requires an extremely fine grind to liberate the gold. The fineness to which an ore can be ground economically has gone far beyond what was thought to be the limit only a few years ago. Formerly, a set of standard screens was all that was required to measure the fineness to which an ore was ground. At present, the Haultain infrasizer is practically indispensable, and the nominal micron has become a familiar unit of measurement to all those dealing with the problems of fine grinding.

"IntroductionScreens are used in coal preparation plants for four basic functions, namely:I. Scalping off large size run-of-mine coal for initial size reduction;2. Sizing of coal treatment in different process streams;3. Removal of magnetite (dense medium) from clean coal and refuse;4. Dewatering.Canadian coal preparation plants use screens extensively in the above functions. Even plants where no beneficiation takes place, screening and crushing are carried out in the size reduction process.Description of Process UnitsThe type of screen used in coal preparation plants generally falls into the following categories:Fixed Screens and Grizzlies (for large coal)Often a simple rugged construction, either set horizontally above a bin or inclined with the coal flow.Fixed Sieves (for fine coal)They are used for dewatering and/ or size separation of slurried coal or discard. The sieve bend, the Vor-Siv, the Wilmot riffle and the cross flow screen fall into this category. The most commonly used in coal preparation plants is the sieve bend, Figure 1. Coal slurry is fed tangentially onto a fixed curve wedge wire screen deck. The solids are separated at a predetermined particle size, delivering a partially dewatered overproduct and a dilute underflow. The coal slurry is initially delivered to the sieve bend via a feed box. A series of baffles spreads the feed evenly across the width of the deck. The slurry drops from the last baffle, passes through the feed spout and is fed tangentially to the screen. It is important that the feed should contact the surface immediately at the front end of the sieve bend. It is possible to lose as much as 250Jo of screening area with a poorly fitted screen box.The full stream of coal slurry flowing over the sieve bend decreases in depth, in increments of approximately •;4 the slot width each time it passes a slot. Sieve bends make a size separation at 112 to 2h the slot width. This feature virtually eliminates blinding of the screen surface. Slot sizes are normally quoted in millimetres, available standard slot sizes are from 2 mm to 0.125 mm. The sieve bend is also widely used in coal preparation for preliminary dewatering."

Subsidence may be observed above partial extraction shallow room-and-pillar mines where the coal seam(s) is associated with weak and thick claystone in the floor. This paper presents results of subsidence studies at such a mine. During the 26-month study period, a time dependent subsidence causing a maximum vertical movement of 50 mn was observed. After a subsidence rate of 6.0-6.5 m/month for the first two months after development of mine workings, the rate decreased to 0.8-0.9 mm/month after 17 months. However, presumably due to settlement of barrier pillars, it increased therafter to 1.7 mm/month for the next 9 months. Angle of draw, based on zero subsidence, was calculated to be about 29 degrees. Maximum tensile strain and compressive strain values observed were 0.040 pct and 0.039 pct respectively. A hypothesis was fomlated to correlate surface subsidence movements with observed underground movments. The data collected to date fits reasonably well within the formulated hypothesis.

"The need to fill the void space or annulus created between an excavated tunnel or shaft and the final lining system has long been a requirement in underground construction. Most of those types of voids are created as a result of employing the two pass tunneling lining method. Filling of this void is called backfilling. For many years the materials used as backfill were primarily reinforced and non-reinforced concrete, sanded grout, neat cement grout, or blown-in sand/pea gravel. However, in the past 20 years the use of cellular grouts/cellular concrete as the backfill material has greatly increased. Most cellular grout is made of a mixture of water, Portland cement (with or without the addition of fly ash), a foaming agent and admixtures such as a water-reducer or superplasticizer.It is the authors’ preference to use the term cellular grout as opposed to cellular concrete since by ACI Concrete Terminology an ACI Standard (ACI CT 13), concrete contains aggregates. Normally cellular grout does not contain sand (finite aggregate), but almost never contain course aggregates.The authors believe there are several reasons for this increased use of cellular grout as backfill, such as:• The increase utilization of the various trenchless tunneling methods. Tunnels constructed using trenchless method tend to be smaller in size, excavated diameter or cross sectional area. Making man-entry for placing backfill from inside the secondary liner, utilizing pre-installed grout posts, more difficult if not impossible. It is these workspace restrictions that are the drivers as to when to utilize grout ports installed during the pipe/liner fabrication versus grout delivery pipes installed within the void/annulus space.• The ability of cellular backfills to be pumped and flow longer distances.• The unit weight of cellular grouts can be controlled by mix design and generally can range from 560 Kg/m3 (35 lbs/CF) to 1040 Kg/m3 (65 lbs/CF)."

The Island of Ceylon, which is one of the most beautiful possessions of the British Empire, has been an abode of man from the very earliest times. The Veddhas, a wild tribe of some 4500 people still living in the fastnesses of the jungle in east central portion of the island, are believed to represent a remnant of the oldest inhabitants of which we have any actual knowledge, but in the caves in which they live there are found the stone axes and other implements of Palaeolithic people who represent the first race of men who inhabited our globe, and of whom they may be, for all that is known, the direct descendants. About the fifth century before Christ there came the Aryan invaders, apparently from the north of India, who drove the Veddhas into the remote fastnesses of the jungle and developed the remarkable Singhalese civilization whose high character is demonstrated by the remarkable and very extensive system of irrigation works which they built up, and through which they made the island wonderfully productive. Great cities arose, some of which are believed to have had a population of over a million souls and whose temples and public buildings show that the people were accomplished architects and sculptors.

JournelIn his presentation Mr Wiik said that unrolling could be regarded as a reversal of the natural process of folding, so that the aim of an unrolling procedure would be the reconstruction of original pre-tectonic conditions. While simply formulated, this aim might not always be achieved. The geometrical relationship between points on the deformed surface and corresponding points on the original surface is process-dependent, and a true reconstruction could be achieved only if the deformation history were known in detail.In this computer unrolling procedure all these complexities were ignored. Referring to one particular marker horizon, Mr Wiik said that it was assumed in the procedure that this marker was deposited as a horizontal stratum and that it had subsequently been deformed by simple flexure-type folding.The procedure allowed the geologist to incorporate his knowledge and conception of the deposit through repeated re-contouring with dummy points. This 'manumatic' aspect of the procedure had proved invaluable, not only in resolving specific unrolling problems but also in making the system more acceptable to the geologists in general.Unrolling served towards removing what might be termed `tectonic noise' superimposed on the primary distribution patterns for regionalized variables such as metal content and orebody thickness. From this point of view, variograms derived on the basis of unrolled-plan co-ordinates should be more meaningful in terms of depositional environment than are variograms calculated from a normal map projection.Mr M. M. Oosterveld remarked that it appeared from the paper that there were problems in applying the unrolling technique to ore reserve calculation, and asked whether there were not other methods that might be used for that purpose.Mr Wiik replied that at present unrolling played only a minor role in practical ore reserve estimation within Roan Consolidated Mines, Limited. The techniques currently in use differed from one orebody to another, but in general they involved projection onto a vertical longitudinal section or a horizontal plan, with subsequent grid interpolation by means of a standard computer contouring package."

Although the Mt Charlotte gold resource was discovered in 1893, it was only in 1954 that geologists correctly interpreted drill data and defined a large low-grade orebody. The mine has been a large, low-cost and profitable producer since 1962 when bulk mining commenced using cut and fill. From 1968 a combination of long hole open stoping with delayed mass blasting was used. This proved to be an excellent mining method for the large, separate subvertical orebodies. The structured but otherwise good quality rock allowed very large stopes to stand unsupported. Exceptionally large equipment, for its time, was used to efficiently mine, muck and move the ore at low-cost. The mine only just survived severe cost pressures in 1974-76, due to very low gold prices. Better gold prices in 1979 and a need to access deeper ore meant a bold commitment to sink the Cassidy Shaft and refurbish the mine to sustain future profitability. In 1997 the Sam Pearce Decline connected to the underground workings, making it profitable to mine upper level remnant ore. Mining-induced seismicity has been a feature of mining at Mt Charlotte. The main cause has been shearing on structures. A mine-wide seismic system was installed in 1994. Large seismic events have occasionally made management question whether a safe working environment can be maintained. Thorough investigations led to an understanding of the problem and development of procedures to minimise seismicity.

AS the end of the collegiate year approaches, the problem of student employment again becomes acute. This subject divides itself into two phases: (1) employment prior to graduation and (2) employment following graduation. "Experience is the best teacher," according to the old adage, and the student needs all that he can get. He is afforded every opportunity to reap from his books the theories and principles of scientific and engineering practice, and occasionally he is privileged to make field trips to observe the practical side of the subject. But it is not enough for one to know the theory and to observe its application; it is also desirable for the student to get the feel of the tools during his training Such opportunities can only be afforded the student if the major companies cooperate with the universities in giving the student part-time and vacation work.

"The desirable shovel speed-torque curves are described, along with the characteristics of the more important electrical components used to approximate these curves. A particular shovel regulator system combining these components is discussed in detail and some of the advantages and disadvantages of the system are given.INTRODUCTIONIN 1959, STATIC CONTROL was for the first time successfully applied, installed and operated on a mining machine in North America. Since that time, a great deal has been learned about this control by the people maintaining these machines as well as by the de-signers.In 1961, the first SCR (Silicon Controlled Rectifier) or thyristor control system was installed on an excavator. This control differed from the earlier static control in that thyristor excitors supplied the generator fields directly. The development of thyristors of a sufficient rating to supply amounts of phase-controlled power to the generator fields eliminated the bulky Mag. Amp. -Rectifier combination previously used."

The town of Hedley is some 200 miles due east of Vancouver and lies in the bottom of the Similkameen River valley, at the junction of Twenty Mile creek, at about the 1,700-foot elevation above sea level. The Nickel Plate mine camp is on Nickel Plate mountain at an elevation of about 5,600 feet, four miles slightly east of north from Hedley, to which it is connected by 9 miles of road, and by 10,000 feet of tramway and electric railway. The latter is used both to transport the ore to the 275-ton mill at Hedley and to furnish the mine with supplies. History The Nickel Plate claim was staked in 1898 to cover the sole outcrop of the Nickel Plate system of orebodies. Soon afterwards it was optioned by the Marcus Daly interests of Butte and underground exploration commenced. Early exploration was successful, and a power plant, tramway, and mill were constructed. The mill began operations in 1904. Production under Daly control ensued from June, 1904, to August, 1909, and amounted to 167,000 tons. The Hedley Gold Mining Company was organized and commenced operations in 1909. The capacity of the mill was increased by stages to 200 tons and a steady production, except for short periods in winter, was maintained until 1930. By 1930, gold to the value of nearly $10,000,000 had been produced since the discovery in 1898. The South American Development Company optioned the property in 1932. Active exploration was conducted during 1933 and 1934 by the Kelowna Exploration Company, a subsidiary of the South American Development Company. This work was sufficiently successful that, coupled with the increase in the price of gold from $20.67 to $35.00 per ounce, production re-commenced in December, 1934, and continued uninterrupted until July, i946, when, along with all B.C. gold mines, a strike closed operations. Under the present ownership, the mill capacity was increased to 275 tons.

During 2007 and 2008, the project Optimal Fragmentation in Blasting II was conducted at the Långåsen quarry of NCC Roads AB near Arlanda. The main goals were:an evaluation of the effect of using electronic delay detonators (EDDs) in quarry blastinga validation of the design curve concept introduced at the Vändle quarry.Five production blasts were monitored. After a first trial round, the remaining four rounds each had about 100 Ø89 mm holes in a 14–19 m high bench charged with site mixed emulsions. In rounds 1 and 2, a tighter pattern than normal was used in one half of the rounds, raising the specific charge there from 0.7 to 1.0 kg/m3. Non-electric initiation was used with two holes per 25 ms delay in-row and 67 ms between rows. In rounds 3 and 4, electronic delay detonators were used instead, with 10 and 5 ms in-row delays respectively.The monitoring encompassed drill hole collaring and alignment, in-hole deviations, the rock structure in the bench faces from 3D imaging, first row burdens, etc. Eleven 400 t samples were taken from the muck piles and sorted in the quarry and sieved in the laboratory (lab). The lab data made up a fines tail that was grafted onto the in-pit sorting data to form sieving curves for the test piles. These curves were then compensated for the absence of boulders to construct the sieving curves for the blasted muck pile.These have been used to derive fragmentation model formulas for the non-electric rounds, also called design formulas. They are based on blast geometry, charging data and the properties of the rock mass. The formulas may be used to estimate the effect of changing blasthole pattern, borehole diameter and stemming length for example.The use of EDDs gave several unexpected results. In comparison with non-electric initiated rounds with a somewhat lower specific charge the fragmentation was much coarser; x50 increased from 160 to 200 mm. The effect of raising the specific charge in the non-electric initiated rounds from 0.72 to 0.99 kg/m3 was a much finer fragmentation; x50 decreased from 160 to 120 mm.CITATION:Ouchterlony, F, Nyberg, U, Olsson, M, Widenberg, K and Svedensten, P, 2015. Minerals Engineering Company (MECO) is a relatively small, promotionally oriented mineral exploration company founded in Colorado in 1948 during the height of the uranium boom. The company has been: 1. in uranium exploration and production 2. a drilling company 3. a manufacturer of Geiger counters 4. a major tungsten producer 5. then dormat for several years and 6. now we are back into exploration on a broad scale. We have been in underground lead and zinc production in the 1970's but we are now involved primarily in "wheeling and dealing" in mineral exploration. The company has had diverse interests in the past and we are presently diversifying to some extent into oil and gas ventures.

ONE OF THE NEWEST developments of industry rising from the commercial application of scientific knowledge is in the making of solid carbon dioxide from the gas about 1925 the first efforts were made to manufacture "dry ice" on a large scale and at a price to permit widespread use. From that beginning the industry has grown to a consumption of 40,000 tons in 1930. Carbon-dioxide ice, as the name implies, is merely the gas compressed and cooled to a solid. The ice has a temperature of 109° F. below zero and is in many ways superior to water ice. It evaporates to a gaseous form so it is not wet and leaves no trace; in fact, one suggested minor use is as coasters under water glasses on the dining table. The gas is harmless except in large concentrations and. when the ice is used as a refrigerant, the resulting gas actually becomes a preservative, keeping oxygen away from perishable products. Not only does the ice have a greater amount of cold in a small volume than water ice but cooling is effected by direct contact of the resulting gas with the materials to be refrigerated rather than by convection air currents.
