Records show that much of the lead produced in the Upper Mississippi Valley lead-zinc field was taken from natural openings along crevice systems at shallow horizons or at the surface. During the early history of the district, the shallow deposits were worked intensively; but in recent years the production of lead, except as a byproduct of deeper mining for zinc ores, has not been significant. Considering the methods of early mining, the character of mineralization, and the fact that galena can still be found on the surface of the old digging areas, it was reasoned that enough mineralization might remain on and above bedrock to permit, through the use of modern equipment and methods, economical re-treatment of surface material in the digging areas.

Pneumatic conveying of coal underground is not widely used in the United States, although it is becoming increasingly popular in Great Britain, the Federal Republic of Germany, and South Africa. The question of safety has been raised repeatedly: Will the system be prone to dust or gas explosions, and, if so, can it withstand such occurrences safely? The work reported here was done under a Bureau of Mines contract and deals with the safety aspects of pneumatic transport of underground coal, as well as the hazards inherent in more conventional haulage systems. Included are three designs for different applications of pneumatic haulage: off-loading a continuous-mining machine on a room- and-pillar section, vertical hoisting through a 1,200-ft shaft, and off-loading a tunnel-boring machine driving a 2,000-ft tunnel.

The oxygen-rich bath smelting process of copper dross was simulated using Factsage software. It was found that the two-step simulation results agreed better with the industrial data, especially in the speiss. Bi, Pb, Sb, As, and Cu contents in the speiss by two-step simulation differed from the industrial data by 0.6 wt.%, 0.8 wt.%, 2.6 wt.%, 7.2 wt.%, and 8.6 wt.%, respectively. Twostep simulation results indicated that the speiss partitioning of Sb, As, and Cu increased from 60.1%, 32.3%, and 27.5%to 81.6%, 67.8%, and 47.2%, respectively, with the smelting temperature increasing from 1050 °C to 1250 °C. While the metal partitioning of Sb and Cu increased from 0% and 2.7% to 15.2% and 13.3%, respectively, with the separation temperature increasing from 400 °C to 700 °C.

Further development of the Nitric-Sulfuric Leach (NSL) process has led to an improved design of the leach and nitric acid recovery steps. NO produced in the leach step is reacted with oxygen, regenerating N02, which is sparged directly into the leach reactor. Leaching is simplified to two steps and the nitric acid plant is replaced with an oxidation recycle gas sys-tem. Laboratory work substantiated the concept and led to selection of operating conditions. The lab work also pointed to improved process control compared to use of nitric acid as the sole oxidant. Recovery of copper from purified pregnant liquor is modified to use air agitation electrowinning improving cathode quality and lowering tankhouse costs. Economic evaluation shows reduction of capital requirements from $2400/AT to $2000/AT in 1978 dollars for 50,000 TPY of copper production.

The electric smelting of five lowgrade Canadian manganese ores has been investigated at the Mines Branch, Department of Mines and Technical Surveys, Ottawa. Ferromanganese, silkomanganese, and spiegeleisen were produced 1by special smelting processes from these ores since the latter were too low grade to be treated by conventional smelting methods. In one case the results were considered to be sufficiently promising to justify the construction of a pilot plant, by the Company concerned, for the further development of the process.

When studying minerals degrees at university, all the emphasis is towards sending the graduates into the bush to work at a remote mine; however, that is not the only option available to new graduates. There are positions in equipment supply companies, commercial laboratories, research organisations, engineering companies and contractors of many types. The aim of this paper is to show metallurgy graduates that there are non-mine site based career options available to them that offer outstanding career development. This is illustrated by outlining the research being undertaken by Magotteaux Australia and by telling the story of a graduate metallurgist working in MagotteauxÆs small research group. Magotteaux is an international supplier of grinding media and wear resistant components for the mining industry. The Australian research group is focused on determining the effects that the choice of grinding media has on subsequent processing, for example flotation and leaching, by using newly developed tools and techniques.

Four short-term studies of practical ignition problems were undertaken and completed during the course of the Bureau of Mines project "Development of Specifications for Intrinsically Safe Equipment." Conclusions were as follows: (1) the most easily ignitible mixture of propane-air in a PTB break flash apparatus is approximately 5.2 percent propane; (2) miniature lamp bulbs to be used in intrinsically safe circuits are about as incendive to coal dust-air as to methane-air and should be tested in gas mixtures containing about 7.0 to 7.5 percent methane; (3) the sodium amalgam contained in high-pressure sodium lamps does not present an ignition hazard for coal dust or methane, where the lamps contain no more than 30 milligrams of amal-gam; (4) the maximum allowable surface temperature of permissible electrical enclosures should remain at 150° C despite efforts by industry groups to raise the value to 200° C.

Until quite recently, the coal in the Cape Breton field was won from comparatively thick seams with light cover, and from submarine areas, and the system of mining naturally followed was pillar-and-stall. This sytem permitted of cheap extraction, and enabled production from localities where other methods could not be employed to good advantage. Thus the pillar-and-stall system, applied to conditions as stated, justified its adoption. Our working seams today, however, are practically all under heavy cover, or are moving in that direction, and with this gradual increase in cover came the increased cost of roadway maintenance. At Princess colliery, the system of pillar-and-stall was followed until roof and bottom conditions became such that further operations were unprofitable, and the longwall method was then adopted as an economic necessity. This fact should be borne in mind when operating costs of both systems are being compared. The longwall method is not held as a cure for all difficulties of heavy cover, but through it these difficulties can be overcome with less expense than by pillar-and-stall. The longwall system of mining, strictly speaking, is one by which a seam of coal is totally extracted in one operation. There are, however, many modifications of longwall, and in some cases it is difficult to determine whether certain practices should be classed as longwall or pillar-and-stall, or a combination of both.

In most States of Australia it is a legislative requirement for underground mines to have a separate means of egress from the normal means of ingress to permit the safe evacuation of workers to the surface in event of an emergency. Such egress may be in the form of a ladderway equipped shaft/underlie or trafficable incline/decline. Additionally, there is a general requirement to have one or more airways, separate to the main shaft or other principal entrance of an underground mine, extending to the lowest level to permit ventilation to all parts of the mine. Fulfilling these requirement is difficult in the development phase of a mine when access underground is achievable by only a shaft or decline in the process by being sunk. What is frequently practiced in Australia is for production to then commence, sometimes in association with continuing development, in the same configuration without the establishment of this separate method of egress to the surface nor additional airway/s with reliance on refuge chambers to cater for back up in any emergency. Not only, could this jeopardise the health and safety of workers in case of an underground emergency it could be construed as a statutory breach of legislation. While recognising that refuge chambers are often used throughout underground operations nowadays their equipping and the criteria for their location needs to be bought into focus. This presentation discusses how such legislative requirement can be met alongside the use and appropriateness of refuge chambers.

TO SERVE their primary function of balancing supply with demand. crude-oil prices must not only return full cost plus a reasonable earning to the efficient producer but they must also offer an additional reward to stimulate exploration sufficiently to maintain adequate reserves. High prices increase the volume and efficiency of exploration; low prig e- -Idle exploration. Over the last decade average prices for crude oil have been much lower than for the proceeding ten years, and lower even than the average over the life of industry. Under these circumstances no one should be surprised to learn that over this same recent period of discovery of new oil fields has also lagged and fallen below its average level for the previous decade. Crude oil prices have been too ion to support the required activity in wildcatting.

Although generation of environmentally harmful hydrogen sulfide is considered to be related to sour gas fields, sweet gas reservoirs and waste fluids, travertine springs and geothermal fields may also produce acid gas (H2S and CO2) under certain conditions. The potential parameters influencing such a possibility need to be fully investigated to evaluate the extent of the consequences and predict hydrogen sulfide generation accordingly. Reports on hydrogen sulfide production at different regions and fields were gathered worldwide for the cases when some of them did not have such a problem previously. In order to inspect different aspects of these case studies, some other regions with no hydrogen sulfide content were selected as control. In all cases water samples were taken carefully for chemical analysis in the laboratory. Besides, mineral compositions were characterised in some cases for better evaluation. In order to give a thorough prospect of hydrogen sulfide production, a geochemical model was prepared. In situ engineering geological conditions, especially pressure and temperature, were assigned in the model to investigate the possibility of H2S generation using PHREEQC software. The results of modelling revealed that although many similarities existed between mineral compositions of the cases, certain formations were particularly prone to hydrogen sulfide generation. For better evaluation, important exchangeable cation ratios such as potassium/sodium, calcium/magnesium and ion proportions like sulfate and chloride were calculated as trends of the formations. As expected, the model could successfully monitor a higher ratio of SO42- and Cl- in potential H2S generator formations. Wide variation in percentage of HCO3- was considered as a secondary observatory parameter for better estimation. In addition, it was noticed that higher anion content created an environment ready to absorb any cations and this makes H2S generation easier. Finally, using correlations between predictors and estimators for low depth and deep samples defined the degree of effectiveness for every sample.

The Bunker Hill Mine, located in the Coeur d'Alene Mining District at Kellogg, Idaho, has been a major producer of lead-silver-zinc ores since its discovery in 1887. The mine has produced over 29 million tons of ore from some 20 to 25 veins and ore zones, and now covers an area approximately one mile in length and one-half mile in width. The active section of the mine extends from 2500 ft above sea level to 1600 ft below sea level. Production is presently at the rate of about 1700 tons of ore per day. A two-mile adit, the Kellogg Tunnel, at the 2500 elevation, provides access to the main shaft area. Ore is hoisted to the adit level through a 5000-ft, 500-inclined shaft, extending to the lowermost haulage level 1200 ft below sea level. Primary shaft service for men and materials is supplied by three major internal, inclined shafts equipped with double-drum hoists. Present production requires ten levels to serve for mainline track haulage. These range up to 5000 ft in length and are either 200 or 400 vertical feet apart. Also, many intermediate levels exist throughout the mine. The conventional and autoloader mechanized square-set and cut-and-fill mining methods used throughout the mine have been the subject of a recent paper(l). One-third of current production is from vein-type ore bodies which are long distances from main shaft areas. Such veins generally dip about 450, have relatively narrow widths of from 3 to 20 ft, and usually contain less than 500,000 tons of ore. For many years, ore bodies thus situated have been developed by means of a separate inclined, timbered service shaft-raise connecting two or more main haulage levels. These commonly range from 400 to 1000 ft in vertical extent and are equipped with 25 to 50 hp electric, single-drum hoists. Intermediate levels are driven as conventional track drifts at 100-ft vertical intervals between the haulage levels. Ore and waste from the intermediate levels are trammed to orepasses for delivery to the lowermost haulage level servicing an ore body. The final result may be visualized as a number of small mines within a large mine. The problems of high development costs and high total development time, and the large amount and high cost of providing materials handl ing and ore haulage service while producing from this isolated type of stope block, made it desirable to consider totally new approaches in developing and mining a number of similar areas.

The Dulles Corridor Metrorail Project is a $3-billion project that will link Dulles International Airport with the downtown center of Washington D.C. by way of a single seat train ride. The project is mostly above ground, but it does include two short, yet complex, tunnels through the area of Tyson?s Corner. The project is being completed in two phases. The Dulles Transit Partners (DTP), led by Bechtel, was awarded the first phase, a $1.6-bil-lion phase that includes 17 km (11 miles) of track with five stations. At Tyson?s Corner, the project includes twin 730-m- (2,400-ft-) long, 6-m- (20-ft-) diameter tunnels. Bechtel is self-performing construction for the $1.6-billion design-build job. Gall Zeidler Consultants was hired by DTP as designer for the NATM tunnel portion of Phase 1, and Beton-und-Monierbau was hired as tunnel subcontractor. Tyson?s Corner is an affluent and congested area that sits 152 m (500 ft) above sea level. To get through the area, it was decided that tunnels would be the best option with the least amount of disturbance to the surrounding areas. However, with extremely shallow groundcover above some points as well as soft soil throughout, the tunnels are also the most complex aspect of Phase 1. About 213 m (700 ft) was constructed utilizing the cut-and-cover method. The remaining 518 m (1,700 ft) is being constructed using the New Austrian Tunneling Method, which integrates the principles of the behavior of rock and soil masses under load, and monitoring the performance of underground construction during construction. ?The tunnel only falls 2 m (7 ft) from one end to the other and we pass through two soil conditions, they are both soft ground,? said Dominic Cerulli, tunnel task manager for Bechtel. ?Soft ground is very tricky because you have to close the ring in a timely manner to minimize settlements at the surface. If you don?t close the ring quickly to achieve a round structure that?s good in compression, the tunnel could start necking and squatting and the ground above it will settle. We are under major roadways, so excessive settlement would be a bad thing.?

ABSTRACT The Redwater pool, in north-central Alberta, was discovered in October, 1948, and at the end of 1950 was about 85 per cent developed. Production is from a Devonian coral limestone reef and is found at an average depth of 3,150 feet. The pool has an estimated .productive area of 37,000 acres, and a maximum oil zone thickness of slightly over 200 feet. Wide variations exist in both type and values of porosity, with the average value determined for the reservoir being 6.16 per cent. The total stock tank oil in place is about 1.24 billion barrels. The crude has a saturation pressure of 485 psig, com-pared to the original value of 1,050 psig for the reservoir, and the principal recovery mechanism so far has been the natural water drive. Cumulative production to January 1st, 1951, has been about 15.5 million barrels. These withdrawals resulted in a reservoir pressure decline of slightly over 100 psi. Predictions of future behaviour indicate that the water drive will not be of sufficient magnitude to maintain the reservoir above saturation pressure past 1953, and that, with natural depletion, the pool will be produced largely by a solution gas drive. Pressure maintenance by water injection has been considered and the possibility of raising the pressure to the original value of 1,050 psig is also discussed. INTRODUCTION WITH the discovery of the Lewduc pool, early in 1947, the Devonian limestone became the major geological formation contributing to Western Canada's rapidly growing petroleum reserves. Redwater, discovered in October, 1948, is now the largest known Devonian pool in Canada, with a recoverable reserve estimated at approximately 500 million barrels. Until recent years, the knowledge of the nature and characteristics of this type of limestone reservoir has been comparatively limited.

EXPLORATION for deep-seated orebodies in the Silver Belt area of the Coeur d'Alene mining district is complicated by meager surface expressions of diagnostic criteria, lack of knowledge of the significance of specific alteration phenomena, and the great expense involved in the exploration for ore shoots, the tops of which often occur near sea level elevation or below and as much as 4000 ft or more below the surface. Except for the early studies of Ransome and Calkins in 1903 and 1904,' little geological work was done in the Coeur d'Alene district for many years, and it is only during the last 15 to 20 years that complete and careful geological mapping has been applied to most of the mines in the area. Much early information, which now would prove invaluable, is lost in hundreds of miles of caved and inaccessible mine openings not mapped by mining geologists. In more recent years mining geology has become a tool of greater use in the district, and some measurable progress is being made in the accumulation of observations that are adding gradually to the knowledge of ore deposits in the district. The recognition of alteration phenomena and related features by Hoyt S. Gale3 in 1935, followed by the work of Shenon and McConnel in 1936-37,4 changed many of the concepts formerly held and opened the way for more critical study and mapping of alteration effects. Mapping of these effects has been in progress for several years but no well-organized, careful, and complete laboratory study of the alteration has been made by mining companies or by government agencies. Recently, Thomas Mitcham of Columbia University has been occupied in the collection and study of specimens carefully selected from several producing mines in the Silver Belt as well as from several prospects exhibiting alteration effects. Mr. Mitcham and the writer have discussed some of the preliminary results of his investigations, which indicate that definite and interesting material is forthcoming from his studies. Work of this kind, aided by careful observation by district geologists, should advance the knowledge of the environment of Silver Belt ore shoots and establish additional criteria for recognizing meager shallow expressions of deep-lying orebodies. Structural details in the Silver Belt area are extremely difficult to decipher on the surface because the area is almost completely covered by a deep mantle of surface debris and soil. A dense growth of small trees and buck brush adds to a geologist's difficulties. Often large areas reveal only scattered small outcrops with great intervening areas where the underlying formations must be deduced from small altered rock fragments. Some considerable success in obtaining surface information has come from bulldozer roads and cuts in selected areas. As this type of work receives more attention, knowledge of the surface expressions of formations, alterations, faulting, and veining is expanding and giving more reliable information to guide deeper development. Lack of diagnostic marker beds in the district contributes to a geologist's difficulties in determining fault displacements. In the Silver Belt, known commercally important sulphide orebodies commonly are associated with siderite and quartz gangue. Some of the veins at shallow horizons above productive ore shoots are composed of quartz with light-colored carbonate minerals such as calcite, ferrocalcite, ferrodolomite, ankerite, and carbonates with variable amounts of manganese. The relation of these carbonates to commercial orebodies is a problem offering possibilities for research. Shallow exposures of veins composed of quartz and the light-colored carbonates, often with some associated barite, grade into quartz and siderite veins at deeper horizons. The vertical range of these carbonates has been partially established for some veins, but no reliable method has been devised for predicting where the change in a vein may take place. Careful observation and analysis of carbonates may make it possible to predict more closely where the change to siderite may be expected. In 1926 Shannon5 pointed out some of the characteristics of the carbonate veins of the district and included a few chemical analyses. Some of the Silver Belt ore shoots have small commercial outcrops, and very shallow development of some properties has led to the opening of small ore shoots." Several small ore shoots developed at shallow depths have not been explored at deep horizons, and some important ore shoots with no commercially significant exposures at shallow horizons have been developed. The greatest problem of the mining geologist working in the Silver Belt area is to find the all-important link between the very meager shallow expressions of mineralization and the rich ore shoots that may be found below. To develop criteria for use in the recognition of the weak upper expression of ore shoots, the experience of past development programs must be relied upon heavily. The investment of more than a million dollars in the exploration for such ore shoots requires some reliable criteria if these ore shoots are to be found. Management needs some assurance that the risk involved is justified by well-developed and acceptable geological inference. The richness of some of the ore shoots found thus far has contributed greatly to the justification for a bold approach, but many negative results of blind exploration programs would lead eventually to extreme caution on the part of management. Fortunately, recent experiences of development programs have been quite successful. It is hoped that added knowledge. of the environment of Silver Belt ore shoots will contribute greatly to the sureness of approach toward their development. The Beverley uranium mine û now in production in the remote north of South Australia at1000 tonnes per annum û was established to meet a projected, but little-recognised shortfallin primary supply of uranium for the nuclear industry in the early part of the 21 st century. Inthe context of AustraliaÆs lack of bi-partisan support for uranium mining and the nuclearindustry, a four to five year window of opportunity existed from 1996 to establish the mine.During this period, Beverley achieved a number of firsts including: the first ISL mine inAustralia; the largest ISL mine in the world and the first to produce more than 500 tonnes ofuranium in its first year; the first to be established under a new Native Title regime in SouthAustralia; and the first to be established under a revised South Australian Mining Act.Beverley was brought into production against the background of: hostile opposition fromanti-nuclear activists; a suspicious and at-times hostile media; a regulatory and politicalcommunity that was unfamiliar with ISL mining; commercially unsophisticated Aboriginalgroups; an inexperienced engineering industry; and the vagaries of development in a remote,semi-arid location with neither population nor infrastructure. The lessons that can be learnedfrom Beverley showed that û like much in life û flexibility and timing are crucial.

Accidents involving underground rail transport were analyzed to quantify the magnitude and the operational requirements for individual mine car braking systems. The results showed that the brake preventable accidents represent only 2% of the total underground fatal accidents and less than 1% of the total underground nonfatal accidents. In addition, the brake preventable accidents are expected to decline over the next decade. The costs of accidents involving deaths and Injuries were determined using various well accepted methods. The costs of a brake retrofit program for all operating underground coal cars were developed separately for small and large coal mines. Costs of retrofit brakes, new car brakes, maintenance, inspection and repair facilities were included in the esimates. The analysis showed that a retrofit program would not significantly increase safety, and that the program cost would greatly exceed the corresponding expected benefits.

Legislation introduced for Queensland and New South Wales Coal mines provides different levels of prescription regarding specification of mine seals û generally in relation to capacity to withstand overpressure. In Queensland, the Coal Mining Safety and Health Regulation (2001), Section 341 (d) places a further onus on the statutory ventilation officer to æensure all ventilation control devices at the mine are properly constructed and maintainedÆ and that the ventilation officer æmust ensure a ventilation control device mentioned in the regulation à and installed at the mine meets the design criteria statedÆ for the ætype of deviceÆ. Based on the experience of the author, it appears that risk management and life cycle approach to seals has not been adopted to the same extent as for other aspects of operations. Further, because of the number of disciplines and personnel involved that may influence various factors affecting seal integrity, the opportunity for oversight or unclear allocation of responsibility is considerable. While suppliers can provide explosion or design rated seals, this should only be a starting point for application of the product in a coal mine. Application is often considered by mine planning staff (taking into consideration mine environment parameters such as water, control of gas, spontaneous combustion risk, etc) in conjunction with the colliery ventilation officer, and then construction completed by contractors under supervision of operational staff. After construction, seals often are managed by operational personnel with input from the ventilation officer. Input of the geotechnical engineer into pillar design, roadway opening size, ground support specification and most stable seal location is also required. The need for a customised design approach for each seal site is proposed in order to take into account the many and variable factors that may influence a site so that improved seal performance reliability and predictability can be developed. A program of quantitative as well as qualitative monitoring of performance and triggers for rectification or maintenance action is required, and would provide support to the aforementioned proposal. Many mines rely on visual/audible inspection and periodic bag sampling as the primary means of assessment. Other significant factors such as seal material properties, rib degradation, convergence, floor heave, effects of water on both structural integrity of the seal as well as the air tightness of the seal do not generally receive the same level of attention. Based on the above observations, the author has compiled a reference checklist in regard to the above matters, including aspects of and approaches to mine and pillar design, geotechnical modelling and data collection, civil engineering design, site evaluation and practical options available.
