These proceedings consist of papers presented at two Bureau of Mines Technology Transfer Seminars in early 1980 for the purpose of disseminating recent advances in mining technology related to surface coal mining reclamation.

In the analysis of comminution processes, it is necessary to have a detailed knowledge of such sub-processes as: (i) The transportation of the particles to the zone where they are stressed, (ii) The stressing of the particles to a level high enough for breakage, (iii) The removal of the fragments that are smaller than the limit size from the grinding zone, and (iv) The prevention of agglomeration of the fine fragments. The breakage phenomena of particles is the most difficult sub-process to understand. It can be understood only by applying the principles of fracture physics to obtain information about the stress-strain field in particles which are loaded either by compression or by impact, and by using this theoretical knowledge to interpret experimental results obtained from single particle crushing studies. It is not only of academic interest to know how a particle breaks, but also it is important for practical applications because it provides a basis for evaluating both the direction and limitation for any potential comminution improvement.

The South African mining industry first experienced en-masse use of electronic detonators in the Narrow Reef environment using AELÆs ElectrodetÖ pre-set delay system. In recent years, programmable systems such as AELÆs SmartdetÖ have also established their position, and within both AEL and the mines there has been important learning around the strengths and weaknesses of these systems. In general, the fixed delay systems tend to be more easily appreciated by less-skilled work teams, and are very well suited to simple layouts, especially long, narrow blasts. However, development of programmable row controllers and series delay inserts has greatly expanded the field of usefulness of these systems while retaining most of the simplicity of use. The programmable systems are immensely flexible and therefore able to function under any condition, but require a higher level of discipline and knowledge. Much has been done to address this issue and make the systems user friendly, so the systems have converged to some extent. These systems are both valuable tools for achieving control over blasting in underground and surface applications. The choice of system is very dependent on the prevailing conditions. Accurate timing with electronic enhancements continues to show an increasing range of benefits to mining operations. There is a strong parallel with non electronic initiation systems which helps to understand the appropriate use of the systems.

"The selection of equipment for open-pit mining is an important decision which results in a considerable capital expenditure by the operator. The decision is complicated by the wide product range on the market. Certainly, equipment performance is an important criterion to consider in making the decision. Equally important, however, is the operating inter-relationship among the equipment. A poor balance increases production costs and waiting time as queues form at the bottlenecks. This inter-relationship is dependent on equipment performance, but it is also affected by management decisions (i.e. scheduling techniques).The purpose of this paper is to show how the computer is used to decide which equipment and operating decisions achieve the required production objectives at least cost. Actual mining of the pit is simulated over a period of time using different equipment and scheduling decisions. Production, waiting time and costs are evaluated for each alternative until the operator is satisfied that he has achieved the best result."

The two most important influencers of cost-per-ton in an underground mining machine are its productivity (tons/hour) and its availability-utilization (hours/year). Operating cost and initial price have far less impact. This paper reviews a cost-per-ton sensitivity analysis for underground mining equipment and discusses benchmarks for measuring its performance. The conclusion is that miner-supplier partnerships and the Information Age are the two most significant trends in cost-per-ton reduction.

This report describes an investigation of the technical feasibility of using a conventional commercial-size (10-ft. i.d.), rotating grate, dry-ash-removal type gas producer to make producer gas from chestnut-size bone anthracite. Test instruments were installed, and some minor changes were made in the equipment to handle the large quantities of materials expected. Extensive tests, lasting about 4 weeks, were planned, using 35 to 50 percent ash chestnut anthracite bone. However, operations were suspended after 8 days when it became apparent that to use this type of fuel satisfactorily substantial changes in equipment and operating procedures would be required. Nevertheless, enough data were obtained to indicate that gas could be produced continuously and routinely from bone coal in this type of producer whenever conditions justified the necessary development work.

The Buffelsfontein Gold Mining Company is situated in the Klerks-dorp district of the Province of the Transvaal in the Republic of South Africa, approximately 100 miles west of Johannesburg. Gold production commenced in January 1957 and Uranium treatment of residue slimes as a by-product started in July 1957. The mining property is 5435 mining claims in extent, the equivalent of 7,988 acres or 12.5 square miles. The mine was initially exploited by the Pioneer Twin Shaft System, consisting of a 26 feet diameter down-cast shaft and a 22 feet diameter up-cast shaft, sunk in the north-west area of the mine to cater for the hoisting and ventilation requirements for a milling rate of 150,000 tons per month.

"INTRODUCTION Mines are filled with a mixture of gases, some of which are toxic, flammable, explosive. Others can be early reporters of potential problems. It has previously been shown that analysis by gas chromatograph can the most accurate conventional analytical tool for common mine gas mixtures when used correctly. There are some other detection methods (e.g hand held sensors), but they do not detect many situations which are immediately dangerous to life or health (IDLH). Examples include explosive hydrogen mixtures, toxic carbon dioxide levels, and some explosive mixtures of methane with oxygen. (Reference our previous paper). There are several reasons for mines to consider onsite GC analysis. (1) Timeliness of results. Samples can be taken and analyzed immediately. Samples do not have to be shipped to a lab and wait for results. (2) Ability to run greater number of samples a lower for the same cost. This allows mine to increase the number of samples taken to be more informed about the gases/conditions of the mine without the worry of financial constraints. (3) Fewer sample media needed, and there is no wear and tear or cost from shipping them offsite. When samples are shipped offsite, those sample media cannot be used to take until the lab returns them when the analysis is done onsite, the sample media can be used again almost immediately. However there are several challenges associated with using GC to analyze mine gas samples onsite. To date there has been a clash of the requirements for a successful analysis, the capabilities of the technology, and the practicalities of implementation. The purpose of this paper is to discuss some of the difficulties in getting accurate reliable data and doing so in an economic way. This whole measurement activity is a cost center for a mine, so there are economic concerns for the mine to address. These concerns are mainly staffing costs, capital costs, maintenance, and consumables costs. A properly staffed and equipped analysis lab, including burdened overhead, costs about $500K per year. At a sampling rate of 10 per day, this is about $140 per measurement for a proper onsite lab."

"Mine safety training materials have long included pictures of mine conditions, equipment, hazards, etc. These images are invaluable to both the trainee and the trainer to convey many important concepts. The human eye takes in a tremendous amount of information, while the field-of-view from a consumer grade camera is, generally, 40 degrees to 90-degrees. This difference in field-of-view is a primary reason that pictures, especially of dark and dusty areas, don’t adequately describe the scene. For conveying information to a trainee, these images lack context. Today, 360-degree cameras are available with consumer-grade cameras costing a few hundred dollars. Also, the display technology is already owned by most trainees and trainers and is widely available. The resulting 360-degree videos and pictures can be readily viewed on smart phones and inserted into Microsoft PowerPoint slideshows. These images and videos can easily be included in existing training modules, disseminated using the internet, and used by trainees easily. We propose a methodology for utilization of 360-degree video and images with simple display technology for miner training. INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND In mining, as in other production-related industries, the safety of workers is dependent upon many interrelated factors. One of the more important safety factors is a miner's ability to recognize hazards in their workplace. The ability to perceive and identify hazards is perhaps more difficult to master in underground mining than in general industry because the work environment is confined, noisy, dark, and inherently dangerous because of the hidden unknowns created by the geological setting and the conditions created by the mine opening. Further complicating the situation is a setting that is continuously changing as mining advances (Barrett 1995) [1]. Hours of excellent mine safety training have been developed and utilized over the years. Pictures of mines, activities, hazards, etc., are included in many of these training courses. These photographs, especially those taken underground, often lack context because of the limitations of the cameras and lenses. Notable research by the US Bureau of Mines and then later by NIOSH showed that the use of stereoscopic three-dimensional slides in training exercises was an effective aid for improving the ability of miners to recognize hazardous ground control conditions (Barrett 1988) [2]. Introduction This paper deals with the operations and plant of the Craigmont Corundum Project, formerly of Wartime Metals Corporation but now under the Mines Section of the Resources Development Branch of the Department of Reconstruction and Supply. Corundum is recovered by the re-treatment of an old tailing deposit at Craigmont, Ontario. Crude concentrates so produced are shipped to the plant of the American Abrasives Company, Inc., at Westfield, Mass., for final processing and distribution to the abrasive industry. The plant was recently described in a paper entitled Craigmont Corundum which was presented by the writer before the Chicago meeting of the A.I .M.E. in February, 1946. General The Project is located on? lots 4 and 5, concession XVIII, township of Raglan, Renfrew county, Ontario, near the village of Combermere, which is on Highway 62. The property is about 135 miles from Ottawa. The general area enjoys a pleasant climate with moderate summer temperatures, though the winters are rather severe, the mercury frequently falling to - 35 deg. F. The excellent boating, fishing, and hunting have made the district a favourite resort for tourists. Lumbering is the main industry. Some farming is carried on, but the soil is poor and much of the land is hilly and rocky. There are no other operating mines in the immediate vicinity, though several 'industrial minerals', including mica, feldspar, nepheline, beryl, socialite, and others have been produced in the area. The district is drained by the York and Madawaska rivers and is generously dotted with large and small lakes. The general elevation is about 1,000 feet above sea level, though numerous hills rising several hundred feet give a rolling appearance to the landscape.

The production of kaolin and calcium carbonate in North America exceeds 13 million tons sold into higher value market segments. With a few exceptions, the markets supplied exhibit mature growth rates. In some market sectors, technology changes have and continue to occur shifting pigment-type consumption and growth. New sources of supply will impact current businesses. New product and process developments for kaolin and calcium carbonates are continuing. Each of these issues is examined in developing a view of the future for kaolin and calcium carbonate in North America.

THE subject of fuel-briquetting has attracted much attention on the part of engineers and investors for the past 15 or 20 years, and especially in recent years, during which a number of plants have been built, with more or less commercial and technical success. Our technical literature contains numerous descriptions of certain processes, and discussions of the industry in general. For a history of the development of the art in the United States, and for descriptions of many of the processes which have been tried, reference may be made to the files of our Transactions, and, for more recent information, to a paper by C. T. Malcolmson, read before the First Annual Convention of the International Railway Fuel Association in June, 1909. The purpose of the present paper is to describe the briquette-plant of the Solvay Process Co. and the Semet-Solvay Co. at Detroit, Mich., which, after a period of long and costly evolution, is now operating satisfactorily on a commercial basis. I believe that it will be of interest to some of our members to have the details of operation, lower-consumption, labor, etc., as worked out on a practical and commercial scale in a going operation. The briquette industry has had a somewhat checkered career in the United States, and much the larger portion of the failures has been due entirely to commercial causes. It seems axiomatic to say that before undertaking the installation of a plant for manufacturing briquettes it is necessary that the local situation should be carefully examined : First, to determine the kind of briquettes, if any, the local market will consume; that is-to say, whether the available fuel-supply is such that briquettes would be a welcome addition, and whether the most promising field is the industrial or the domestic market. DIVERSITY There are plenty of examples to show that diversity has been the fundamental downfall of many organisations, particularly when you consider the international position. What about core business, the return of companies to key competence directions and market focus. The stockmarket for instance defines groups and companies in key groups of core business. The expectation is that companies toe the line and do not diversify across their areas of defined expertise. In essence, the market has given notice that the requirements are to focus and stick to our core business. So what right does the conference have to suggest that diversity is the key to prosperity. Hasn't the organiser read the book, studied the history, listened to the market - obviously not. Have they got it wrong, My feeling and belief is no - the organisers have got it right. However, the matter is not as simple as first perceived. What is Diversity, or Diversification as I would prefer? Is it a product position? Is it a geographic position? Is it an expansion or change in services offered? Does a gold mining company diversify into copper or diamonds or aluminium or nickel? Does a gold miner in Australia diversify into China or Kazakhstan or West Africa? How do the two relate? They don't. A successful company will always possess a 'core competence' not so much a 'core business'. The best example of this is the service company extraordinaire - McDonalds. They don't sell hamburgers or french fries, they sell a service, a convenience, a lifestyle. The core business is hamburgers and if McDonalds were to diversify further into new styles of hamburgers, I suggest to you they would fail. But if McDonalds were to diversify into other products based on their 'core competence', provision of service, then I would suggest to you they would be very successful. OUR combined economic activities have as their goal the maximum of individual well-being and national security. In this age of intense international competition the two objectives are closely related. For many decades, the maximum of well-being and ability to maintain national security have moved generally upward. The best single measure-perhaps the only adequate measure -of the level of the rising goal is the per capita real national income (national income corrected for price changes). For centuries before the industrial revolution the income of the world's population changed little from generation to generation. In our country prior to 1800 the growth of national income was hardly measurable from decade to decade. Since 1850, perhaps since the "industrial revolution," the growth of per capita real income has been increasing geometrically. Blasting in the mining industry is being transformed, and can no longer be treated as an art or a practice purely dependent upon experiences of individuals. Examples of key drivers that have demanded consistent and more accurate blast results are initiatives to control pit-wall damage to help mine steeper pit slope angles, to control damage to underground opening operating in close vicinity of the open pit mine. Such situation exists at Rampura Agucha open pit lead zinc mine, which is producing 5.7 Mt/a of ore and has started its underground part, which is slated to produce initially 2–2.4 Mt/a and 4.5 Mt/a in the near future. The open pit mine is currently working at 326 m depth and is designed to reach 421 m deep. It has been planned to operate the underground mine maintaining 50 m parting from the planned ultimate level of the open pit mine.Presently, open pit and underground mines are being operated simultaneously. The present average depth of underground working lies between 370 and 410 m below the surface level. Sometimes explosives up to 95 978 kg are being detonated in a blast round in open pit mine. These blasts are often apprehended as a danger to the safety and stability of underground openings. It was decided to document the impact of open pit blasting in the openings of underground workings, so that preventive measures may be taken for the safety and long-term stability of the underground mine. The impact of 86 open pit blasts has been documented in the underground openings and 258 blast vibration data has been recorded. The vibrations were recorded simultaneously in the roof, side walls and at floor levels. The highest levels of vibrations were recorded in the roof and the lowest levels at the corresponding floor levels. The pillars experienced lower level of vibrations than the roof. Blast designs were optimised at open pit mine to control vibration in view of long-term safety and stability of the underground openings. The vibrations generated due to detonation of explosives with shock tubes and electronic delay detonators have been recorded in underground openings for comparative assessment. Ground vibration recorded at roof, pillar and floor were analysed separately and threshold value of the vibration for the safety of underground workings has been determined based on the rock mass rating of the roof rock.CITATION:Singh, P K, Roy, M P, Paswan, R K, Shekhawat, L S and Joshi, A, 2015. The University of New South Wales (UNSW) has been a world leader in the development of innovative virtual reality technologies over the last 10 to 15 years. These developments have included developing the world?s first 360° surround, virtual reality (VR), stereo projection theatre system known as AVIE (Advanced Visualisation and Interactive Environment), which was developed by iCinema, a collaborative venture between the UNSW Faculties of Engineering and College of Fine Arts. The UNSW School of Mining Engineering has been responsible for development of mining applications virtual reality software modules and to date, has developed eighteen different mine safety training and mining engineering education modules which run in the AVIE environment. This platform and technology package provides a unique ?immersive environment? experience for groups of trainees or students who can engage with the simulated environment in the complete safety of the virtual reality theatre. In all of the major international mining industries, safety is of paramount importance, and training of personnel is an essential component of any comprehensive proactive safety management system. All personnel need to be aware of the inevitable hazards around them at all times, as well as understand appropriate safety and operational procedures. This can be done by conventional class-room style training sessions, or by provision of training documentation. However the effectiveness of such systems is often very limited due to the inability of trainers to engage with the audience for a lengthy period of time; or to convey the often complex and variable mining environments and situations which can exist in a typical mine. The ability to immerse the trainees in a virtual mine environment, with all the reality of an actual mine but with none of the physical exposure to actual hazards, provides a far more effective and engaging training experience. Furthermore, in the virtual world, trainees can be exposed to the very unlikely, but nevertheless high consequence hazards such as mine fires, falls of ground or outbursts, without any risk to their safety and well-being. The end result is that trainees will be far more engaged with the learning environment they find themselves in, and will develop a far higher level of understanding of the topics, rather than simply experiencing a passive class-room style learning environment offered by conventional training modes. The UNSW systems have been implemented widely within the Australian mining industry and the mining engineering education sector and are now being adopted internationally. This paper presents an overview of the innovative technologies involved in these virtual reality systems ? as applied to the mining industry. Modules developed for both mineworker training and mining engineering student learning will be presented, to illustrate the effectiveness and value of such a training and education approach.

IT is 27 years since I last visited Broken Hill, New South Wales, one of the world's greatest lead-silver-zinc districts. Then, the flota¬tion of ores was in its infancy. The Minerals Separation process had its birth as a practicability in the Central Mill, which is still operating and yielding high recoveries. The average Australian knows that Broken Hill is an important mining center in a "corner" of New South Wales, but he does not know what a factor it is in the lead, silver, and zinc production of the world. Is a shaft the same as a tunnel and can it be approached in the same manner for design and construction? The most obvious difference between a shaft and a tunnel is that of orientation; whereas a tunnel is commonly near horizontal or slightly dipping, a shaft is commonly vertical or steeply inclined. As a result, design and construction methods employed for tunneling, in general, cannot be directly applied to shafts, although some of the basic concepts of behavior are quite similar. Many of the shafts that have been sunk in various parts of the world are owned by private mining companies. Each company has generally accumulated years of experience in shaft sinking and mining techniques pertinent to its particular geographic location. When a new shaft is to be sunk or an existing shaft deepened, the tendency often seems to be to continue to use the methods that have been used successfully in the past.
