Over the last 10 years, Computer Aided Design, Finite Elements Analysis and field testing of prototypes have enabled the cycling industry to grow and to significantly improve its products. However, today's cyclists have become more and more demanding, making these classical design approaches almost obsolete. Devinci understood that problem four years ago and fully revisited its design approach; to offer bicycle frames better suited to real life riding, one must fully know those real life conditions. In partnership with the University de Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada, Devinci then developed a bicycle enabling them to measure the actual load applied on a bicycle frame in real-time for real riding conditions: the instrumented bike. Today, Devinci uses its instrumented road and mountain bikes, combined with virtual prototyping and laboratory testing capabilities to develop better bicycles, faster.

During the last quarter of 1948, two new machines, which may revolutionize the coal mining industry, made their first public appearance within two months of each other. Both are designed to mine and load coal continuously. On Oct. 27, the "Colmol," invented by C. H. Snyder and A. E. Lamm, president and executive vice-president, respectively, of the Sunnyhill Coal Co., was demonstrated at the No. 8 mine of that Company at New Lexington, Ohio. The "Joy Continuous Miner," invented by H. F. Silver, president of the Silver Engineering Works, Denver, and developed and manufactured by the Joy Manufacturing Co., was demonstrated at the Mathies mine, near Finleyville, Pa., in the Pittsburgh coal seam.

The applicability of the beam theory in analysis of roof- pillar-weak floor interaction in partial extraction room-and-pillar mining is presented. The mine structure is modeled as an equivalent multi-indeterminate overburden elastic beam supported by elasto-plastic pillars; resting on a viscoelastic layer of immediate weak floor strata underlain by a competent rock mass. The developed analytical model was initially utilized to conduct sensitivity analyses of different variables affecting the mining system, such as the deformability of coal and weak floor strata, thickness of weak floor strata, number of pillars in a panel, width of pillars, width of panel etc. These analyses were then extended to three overburden strata - coal pillar - floor strata lithologies typical of active coal mining areas in Illinois.

High-voltage direct -current transmission is a relatively new technology. The successful development and operation of AC/DC converters, capable of handling large power blocks, have made HVDC transmission generally accepted by utility engineer s and planners around the world. HVDC technology still has significant development potential and, as a result, it is expected that equipment costs will escalate at a substantially slower rate than those of conventional AC equipment. This development will also result in still more compact terminal stations. This paper reviews two modern HVDC installations. In Zaire in Africa. a 1700-km overhead DC line rated at 500 kv, will supply power to the copper mining district in the Shaba region. Another HVDC link connects Norway and Denmark through a submarine cable rated at 250 kv. This is the longest HVDC cable in the world, 127 km, and the water depth , maximum 530 m, is also much greater than for any previous similar cable. The reasons for selecting HVDC are discussed, and the design and layouts are presented.

Blasting can impact the efficiency of entire downstream mining operation. Individual technology solutions for blasting have been available in the industry for many years but all of them only cater for certain aspects of blasting. Many of them are based on individual research and/or experiences. Some of the available software solutions are not suitable to be used in the field as that they need advanced skills or tools. Also, most do not take technology advancements like mobility, advanced data analytics, web solutions and integration into consideration. Hence, no technology platform is currently present in the industry that addresses all potential needs a blaster may need in an integrated manner.This paper presents an integrated solution that takes care of all aspects of blasting – design blasts according to mine plan; collect data after drilling has been carried out (as there is often difference in designed and actual drilled hole locations in the field); predict blast results in terms of fragmentation, flyrock, ground and air vibrations, wave front reinforcement and flyrock distance; and after assessment, allows changes in charging, delay timing and sequence. The technology solution is a secure, cloud-hosted, web-based software-as-a-service solution that can be accessed from anywhere. Also it has a mobile app, which is available for both Android and iPhone/iPad. The mobile app is also integrated with the web-based solution using application programming interface calls to the central data repository.Case studies for two limestone mines are presented where this solution is being used in its initial format. This software platform enabled analysis of the outcome from a previous blast pattern and then subsequently allowed optimisation of blasting operations based on historical data. Uses of this platform have resulted in improved key performance indicators in these two limestone mines. The mobile app as part of this platform enables extensive field blast data capture and analysis and also various predictions before a blast. Data collected include blast parameters, individual hole charging, initiation pattern, videos, photographs and vibration records for analysis/reporting. The key features of the solution are a blast designer, a detailed blast data collection/analysis and a series of environmental predictors. These predictors give blast results in terms of fragmentation, flyrock, ground and air vibrations and wave front reinforcement and take remedial steps before blasting to optimise and control adverse environmental impact. Many features, such as fragmentation predictor and mobility solution, are completely unique features that are not available elsewhere in such a field personnel-friendly manner.CITATION:Bhandari, S, Parihar, C, Garg, R and Bhandari, A, 2015. "The development of the Cerro Verde, Amplats Mogalakwena and Boddington projects over the last few years has helped to establish the use of high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) in comminution circuit designs in large-scale hard-rock applications. The increasing acceptance of this innovative and sometimes controversial technology has had the natural effect of prompting many other new projects to examine HPGR as an alternative to the established, usually SAG-based, comminution circuit design approach.At the current stage of development of the technology, HPGR-based circuit capital costs are generally higher than for the equivalent SAG-based circuit, so that HPGR must offer sufficient operating cost benefits to offset the additional capital costs over an acceptable pay-back period. It is usually necessary to undertake comprehensive project-specific trade-off studies to quantify this effect.This paper describes the processes involved in the execution of a typical SAG-HPGR trade-off study, from the preliminary assessment of ore characteristics and project criteria, through testwork, circuit modelling, equipment selection and cost estimates, to a project-economics comparative assessment of the options. The trade-off study determines both the technical feasibility of the respective technologies and their commercial viability in the given project setting.The paper concludes with a cautionary note to the effect that, while HPGR has many potential benefits, it is not a panacea, and that, for some ore types and project conditions, the more established conventional technologies are often more appropriate."

Application of the usual chemical methods to the determination of beryllium in the mineral-dressing products of a spodumene pegmatite was found to be unsatisfactory as to speed, accuracy, sensitivity, and range of analysis. A spectrographic method is described for the determination of beryllium. Samples are ground, mixed with borax, high-purity, flake graphite, and an internal standard; then they are fused, reground, pelletized, and excited with a high-voltage-spark discharge. Investigation of several spectrographic techniques to overcome matrix effects are described. The method developed gives results for beryllium in the concentration range from 0.002 to 5.0 percent; the average probable error of duplicate determinations was below 3.0 percent of the quantity present. INTRODUCTION The main source of beryllium in pegmatite is the mineral, beryl. Many of the conventional methods for the determination of beryllium in beryl are not suitable for control purposes because of lack of speed and accuracy, especially in the range below a few tenths percent. Beryl resists the usual chemical attack and can be lost in a hurried chemical analysis.

THE following paper-in no sense a technical paper-is a summary of a safety campaign instituted by a coal-mining company to improve an unfortunate safety record. The experience should be suggestive equally to coal and metal-mining companies. With few precedents to follow in the beginning, the course was charted by trial and error. The endeavor, often disheartening, finally resulted in the capture of the most coveted safety trophy in the mining industry, "The Sentinels of Safety," awarded by the Hercules Powder Co. of Wilmington, Del., through the U. S. Bureau of Mines. The period described covers the 10-year interval, 1924 to 1933, the year 1933 being that for which the award was made. Flow studies have been conducted on nickel-water suspensions in a 1in.-diam., 42-ft.-long transparent lab-oratory pipeline at concentrations of up to 25 per cent, by volume, and slurry velocities of up to 15 ft/sec. The average size of the nickel powder was approximately 150 mesh (106J.L). Three flow regime were noted. At the highest velocities, i.e., above 10 ft/;sec., where the concentration distribution through the vertical diameter was most uniform, pressure gradients could be correlated with the Durand-Condolios equation (7,8). An intermediate region, i.e., from 7 ft/sec. to10 ft/sec., could be distinguished, the lower velocity limit being that at which nickel particles began to deposit. This region was also marked by decreasing pressure gradients, for a given concentration, as the velocity was reduced. The upper velocity limit in this region was also uniquely defined in that the friction factor for any nickel concentration was the same as that for water. In the third regime, below about 7 ft/sec

The U.S. Bureau of Mines, under contract to the U.S. Department of Energy, investigated the erosive-wear properties of seven commercial alloys with potential applications as valves for coal-conversion plants. A dry particle, jet-erosion apparatus was used to determine the wear of seven materials: 316 and 440-C stainless steels, K-68, K-701, and K-801 cemented tungsten carbides, HC-250 white cast iron, and Haynes 6B. The alumina abrasive entrained in the nitrogen gas jet had particle sizes of 27 or 50 µm, the abrasive velocities were 55 to 170 m/s, and the particle impingement angles were 15° to 90°. The maximum specific wear for ductile materials was found to occur at impingement angles of 15° to 30°, and the minimum specific wear occurred at 60° to 90°. For the brittle materials, maximum specific wear occurred at impingement angles of 50° to 85° and minimum specific wear was at the lowest angles. As the velocity and erosive particle size increased, the specific wear increased. The specific wear was related to the velocity by the power function WocAVn, where n was 1.8 to 3.9 for ductile materials and 1.8 to 3.6 for brittle materials.

"INTRODUCTION When nations throughout the world are pitted against each other in a war in which petroleum plays a major role, scientist and engineers of the petroleum industry must give serious thought to ways and means for recover¬ing greater percentages of oil from natural reservoirs than in the past. Petroleum and its products are vital to highly mechanized modern warfare, and the victorious nations will be those whose armies, navies, and air forces are supplied with adequate fuel oil, gasoline, and lubricants until the war is won.Efficient recovery of oil from underground reservoirs depends on many interrelated techniques; evaluation of the producing performance of wells upon the basis of their productivity indexes is one such tool. Oil wells usually yield oil at a maximum rate when first ""brought in"". The rate of production begins to decline soon after the first oil is delivered to the tanks, and although part of the decline usually can be attributed to natural reduction of reservoir pressure as oil and as are withdrawn from the reservoir, a larger proportion frequently is caused by greater saturation of water and as in the producing formation about wells and clogging of the pores of the sands by silt, organic salt, and insoluble hydrocarbons. If the maximum quantity of oil is to be recovered from reservoir sands and rocks by wells, it is then imperative that the ability of wells to produce oil be watched closely and all adverse influences that affect the case with which oil can flow to wells be corrected if possible."

AN EXTENSIVE characterization was conducted on the neutral oil components in a low-temperature bituminous coal tar. A total of tai individual compounds identified with respect to individual isomers, and at least 55 other compounds were indicated to be present. The amounts were determined in all instances. A comparison of isomeric distribution in the tar with thermo-dynamic equilibrium distribution, and kinetic distributions indicated that the composition of the tar largely reflected the structure of the coal from which it was formed. Detailed descriptions are presented for the separatory and qualitative and quantitative procedures for the characterization of the neutral oil component. These include micro fractional vacuum distillation, displacement liquid chromatography, gas-liquid chromatography, countercurrent distribution, and infrared and ultraviolet spectrophotometry. Descriptions are given for the synthesis of authentic specimens of alkylindenes, The ultraviolet and infrared spectra of 134 polycyclic compounds, ranging from alkylindenes to alkylphenanthrenes, either found in the distillable neutral oil, or thought likely to be present, are also given.

CONSIDERING the nature of this audience, I perhaps, in addressing you on the subject of air transportation as related to the mining industry, should speak with tongue in check or at least with some reservation. I know full well that many of you, veterans in the great mineral development in Canada, are perhaps more conversant with the overall aviation picture than I, for aviation to you has been the means to an end, and in many instances has been part and ?parcel in the success of your particular projects, in the form of the initial means of transport. I feel, however, that we in this room today have somewhat parallel geographic interests - yours in relation to what is in the ground, mine in the air - and also in the forests and in the streams - aviation, hunting, and fishing - things which have occupied my attention practically all my adult years. In the light of what has gone. before, and in view of present developments, I think you will agree with me when I say that I do not think there could be a more intriguing pursuit than playing a hand in rolling back Canada's tremendous northern frontiers, even if, at this stage, we have made but slight impression on the untold opportunities which lie in our wide-spread, undeveloped areas.

This paper describes the analytical characteristics of Western subbituminous coal and the manner in which these characteristics apply to their use in a utility-sized steam generator. It compares these characteristics with those of typical Midwestern coal and Eastern bituminous coal. The paper also reviews in detail the design considerations that must receive attention when various blends of these three coals, or any combinations thereof, are planned to be used. This research paper describes variations in analytical and utilization characteristics when coals from different origins are blended in order to achieve a predetermined sulfur content for the purpose of predicting sulfur oxides emissions as they affect environmental regulations and the resulting alterations in utilization characteristics such blending would cause, and how such blends of coal would affect a utility-sized steam generator.

Laboratory studies were carried out at West Virginia University to investigate the rock fragmentation mechanism by continuous miners using an automated rotary cutting simulator. The primary factors influencing the fragmentation process were found to be: bit spacing, bit geometry, depth of cut and cutting drum rotational speed. This paper presents the influence of these parameters in achieving optimum energy consumption and minimizing dust generation during rock fragmentation process. Tree bits were used simultaneously on Indiana limestone while the bit tip angle was varied from 60° to 900. Bit spacing was varied from 2.54 cm (1 in.) to 5.08 cm (2 in.) while the cutting process was assessed for varying cutting depths. Restorable dust generated during the course of the experiments was analyzed utilizing cascade impactors. Assessment of these parameters has led to a better understanding of the cutting mechanism by continuous miners in terms of energy consumption and dust generation.

A comprehensive research program designed to aid development of new and improved methods for more complete production of petroleum from partly depleted reservoirs is being conducted at the Bureau of Mines Petroleum Experiment Station, Bartlesville, Okla. Water flooding has accounted for much of the petroleum produced by secondary-recovery methods; however, a considerable portion of the crude oil commonly remains in place after water flooding has been terminated. In recent years the possibility of increasing the efficiency of water flooding by using surface-active additives has received wide attention. In general, the results of laboratory research have shown that use of detergents as water-flooding additives will reduce the residual petroleum in porous media (1).3/ Some less extensive field tests have supported this conclusion but have not been entirely conclusive (2). Later studies (3, 4) have given conflicting evidence as to the relative worth of detergent additives for water floods in water-wet (hydrophilic) or oil-wet (hydrophobic or lipophilic) reservoir materials. The results of these studies emphasize the need for a more complete understanding of the fundamental principles involved in displacing petroleum from reservoir surfaces by injected fluids. Accordingly, a comprehensive research program was initiated to investigate the practical and fundamental aspects of detergency in petroleum production.

"Robex Resources interrupted production at the Nampala Mine in September 2014 following throughput and gold recovery results which were below expectations during the first months of operation. After a thorough plant audit, an important brainstorming took place in order to identify an economical path to resume production. It was clearly identified that a significant investment was necessary at the concentrator prior to restarting the plant, namely the addition of a ball mill and a new elution system.The mineral processing simulation software USIM PAC was used in order to simulate the grinding circuit in design. The simulations’ outputs allowed the ball mill characteristics and the surrounding classification devices to be designed with more accuracy. Many ball mills available from second hand retailers were therefore studied in the simulated circuit. The chosen ball mill, which was in perfect condition, had the advantage of being available for rapid delivery on site.The paper first describes the ball mill sizing method in comparison with the conventional Allis Chalmers method. It then describes the phase 2 concentrator start-up (that took place in 2016) with the commissioning of the ball mill, the classification circuit, the gravity concentration, the four (4) new carbon-in-leach (CIL) tanks, and the Zadra elution system (The phase 1 start-up took place in 2014). It finally provides production data compared to expected simulation data, as commercial production was reached in January 2017.IntroductionDesigning a new concentrator or new equipment within an existing concentrator requires significant efforts to identify possible bottlenecks and their causes (i.e. limiting equipment or sectors) and accurate sizing of major equipment can have a tremendous impact on the economy of the whole project. In the presented case study, the ball mill was the critical equipment and oversizing it could have brought the Capex to a level where the project would not have gone through. Inversely, undersizing the mill could have resulted in lower production and therefore no economic viability for the project once it is in operation.During engineering studies, equipment sizing often relies on a static mass balance and one-by-one sizing of all pieces of equipment. The sizing is then left to the equipment manufacturer or in the case of mills, evaluated with empirical models mostly relying on the Bond equations (Allis Chalmers method) [Rowland and Kjos, 1978]. This methodology shows the disadvantage of not considering interaction between equipment in a mineral processing circuit, especially when recirculation occurs. Also, it has the disadvantage of not using the more advanced grinding models that include the use of the whole particle size distribution as well as phenomenological components by only using limited parameters in the ore particle size distribution (i.e. the P80). This can be explained by the lack of data that sometimes needs to be gathered in order to tune the more advanced models but also by the conservative mindset in mineral concentration engineering which does not always favor the use of process simulation. In many aspects of process engineering, Soutex has demonstrated its affinity to using simulation in order to size equipment with more accuracy, consider process variability, simulate complex systems, and study supply chain management (Berton et al., 2015)."

At a time of resource consumption, it is important to study the chemical composition of mining and metallurgical wastes to prevent the dissipative loss of metals and metalloids from the mining value chain. In particular, the recovery of critical elements from wastes is an option to increase the resources of such materials that are economically significant and have an overall supply risk. In this paper we report on the chemical composition, in particular the critical element content, of granulated slag originating from historical smelting activities in the Tsumeb area, Namibia. Laboratory-based inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analyses as well as portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) demonstrate that the slags are on average enriched in base metals (Cu 0.7 wt%, Pb 2.7 wt%, Zn 4.7 wt%), trace metals and metalloids (Cd approx. 50 mg/kg, Mo approx. 910 mg/kg) as well as critical elements (As approx. 6300 mg/kg, Bi approx. 3 mg/kg, Co approx. 200 mg/kg, Ga approx. 100 mg/kg, In approx. 9 mg/kg, Sb approx. 470 mg/kg). While metals and metalloids such as As, Mo and Pb can be determined reliably using pXRF instruments, the technique has inherent limitations in evaluating the contents of certain critical elements (Ga, Sb). However, there are positive correlations between the As, Mo, and Pb contents determined by pXRF and the Ga and Sb contents obtained through ICP-MS and XRF. Thus, quantitative pXRF analysis for As, Mo, and Pb allows calculation of Ga and Sb abundances in the slags. This work demonstrates that pXRF analysers are a valuable tool to screen smelting slags for their chemical composition and to predict the likely contents of critical elements.

"El presente texto señala la evolución de los modelos genéticos de geología económica del yacimiento minero Tres Cruces. Dicho yacimiento se encuentra localizado en el noreste del Perú, adyacente al distrito minero de Quiruvilca. A partir del año 1995 se le reconoció como el mayor productor de oro a través de un programa de exploración en la Formación volcánica Calipuy. Posteriormente, el yacimiento fue visitado por variosgeólogos que postularon diferentes modelos genéticos del yacimiento para así estimar su potencial económico -en tanto se incrementaron los datos geológicos del yacimiento. Por ello, el texto presenta el modelo genético de Tres Cruces, como el más adecuado, aunque la evaluación de su potencial econornica está aún en progreso."
