Cave mining is of interest to the mining community as it offers a chance to extract large, deep orebodies with low operating costs and high production rates. It allows for extracting large low-grade orebodies, which may not have previously been considered for mining. Cave mining is done either top down (ie sublevel caving) or bottom up (ie block/panel caving). Both approaches rely on gravity, stresses and weakness of the rock to fracture and achieve a controlled collapse.Block caving starts at the base of the orebody. It progresses upward and across through continuous collapse of the roof. To achieve this, a critical hydraulic radius must be exceeded. This is accomplished by blasting drawbells, through which the caved ore passes to the production level. An entire level above the drawbells (undercut level) is excavated to help initiate the cave. The undercut level ensures the connection between drawbells and achievement of the required hydraulic radius.Conventionally, drawbells are generated by drilling and blasting several times from the production level as well as the undercut level. Mucking between each shot is required to generate enough void space for the rock to swell. The need for several blasts necessitates some downtime between each blast. Also, the cost of developing and maintaining the undercut level can constitute up to 35 per cent of the cost of mining the panel.A new blasting technique was developed to create the drawbells in a single blast from the production level. The technique ensures the connection of the drawbell to the neighbouring ones, thus, the critical hydraulic radius is reached and propagation of the cave achieved without the need for the undercut level. The technique has the potential to reduce the capital cost of a block caving operation, increase its feasibility and reduce time to reach the ore and consequently the payback period. Mining companies are now looking for more effective ways to engage the community in public participation. Consensus-based approaches are becoming the most popularly applied way of achieving meaningful public participation. This paper introduces the principles surrounding consensus-building approaches and the processes for getting them started. The Healthy Communities Movement is one such consensus-based approach that offers a well-established holistic model for conceptualizing a healthy sustainable community. It also highlights the importance of public participation as an essential component of achieving a sustainable community. The paper concludes by illustrating how current company-community relations programs can utilize these models.

"The Kamoa-Kakula copper project—a joint venture between Ivanhoe Mines, Zijin Mining Group Co. Ltd, and the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo—has been independently ranked as the world's largest undeveloped high-grade copper discovery by international mining consultant Wood Mackenzie. It is a very large, near-surface stratiform copper deposit with adjacent prospective exploration areas within the Central African Copperbelt, approximately 25 km west of the town of Kolwezi and about 270 km west of the provincial capital of Lubumbashi. A phased development approach is currently envisaged. The first phase of the project involves the development of a 6 Mt/a underground mine and surface processing complex (dual stream concentrator) at the Kakula deposit, a discovery announced in early 2016. The second phase involves an integrated 12 Mt/a two-stage development, beginning with initial production from the Kakula mine, to be followed by a subsequent, separate underground mining operation at the nearby Kansoko mine, along with the construction of a smelter. Project description and locationThe Kamoa–Kakula project comprises a newly discovered, very large stratiform copper deposit with adjacent prospective exploration areas, located within the Central African Copperbelt in Lualaba Province, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The Kamoa–Kakula project lies approximately 25 km west of the town of Kolwezi and about 270 km west of Lubumbashi. Ivanhoe owns a 49.5% share interest in Kamoa Holding, an Ivanhoe subsidiary that currently owns 80% of the project. Zijin Mining owns a 49.5% share interest in Kamoa Holding, which it acquired from Ivanhoe in December 2015 for an aggregate cash consideration of US$412 million. The remaining 1% interest in Kamoa Holding is held by privately-owned Crystal River.The Kamoa–Kakula project consists of the Kamoa exploitation licences (exploitation permits 12873, 13025, and 13026, which cover an area of 397.4 km2) and one exploration licence (exploration permit 703 covering an area of 12.74 km2). The Kamoa exploitation licences, approved 20 August 2012, grant Kamoa Copper the right to explore for, develop, and exploit copper and other minerals, for an initial 30-year term, expiring on 19 August 2042. The permits can then be extended for 15-year periods until the end of the mine’s life."

Task training is increasingly important in mining operations because of the ever-accelerating pace of technological innovations and the concomitant increasing complexity of mining equipment. This Bureau of Mines report describes two successful task training program In use in two open-pit taconite operations in northeastern Minnesota. The programs are different in approach, but both have improved safety and in- creased productivity while lowering costs. Methods of training both before and after passage of the 1977 Mine Safety and Health Act are described, and the impact of this act on task training at each operation is discussed. The report identifies four common principles that have contributed to the success of the two training programs and presents plans each operation has for improving future training through new technology.

"Various approaches are used in the industry for establishing procedures (sample mass estimation and method of subsampling) for sampling and analysis of gold ores. The key factors that determine the accuracy of the results that can be expected for a given set of procedures are widely misunderstood.Recent developments in sampling theory show that the estimation of the accuracy that can be expected for a given gold ore as a function of sample mass is actually a simple matter. For a given sample mass, the accuracy that will be achieved depends only on the grade of the ore and the range of masses of the grains of the gold in the ore. This, of course, demands that a reasonable estimate of the distribution or spread of gold grain masses in the ore be known. But this is something that should be known if the gold is to be efficiently recovered in the processing plant.This paper provides a simple explanation of the real facts about sampling of gold, either in the field or in the plant, and provides results for a number of cases of combinations of fine and coarse gold in an ore. During the past several years, alunite from the Marysvale (Utah) region has been the subject of investigation by the Electrometallurgical Section of the Bureau of Mines. The nature and occurrence of this mineral, with considerable data on the Utah deposits, together with a number of results of preliminary experiments, have been given in a previous report.6/ The geology of the Marysvale region has been reviewed recently.7/ The present paper reports the results obtained by a method involving the sintering of alunite with boric acid and subsequent treatment of the sinter to produce alumina and potassium sulphate.

The Karara iron ore project is a magnetite operation consist of open pit mining and concentrator to produce high-grade magnetite concentrate. The concentrator has adopted three stages of comminution, ie fine crushing in the high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR), primary ball milling and fine grinding in the TowerMill plus magnetic separation in between these comminution devices. Since 2014, the concentrator has increased the plant feed rate by 18 per cent. Meanwhile, the ore hardness has increased by 13 per cent to a Bond work index value of 15 kWh/t that led to a coarser flotation feed. Karara Mine has decided to shift the comminution workload from the primary ball mill to the TowerMill circuit by bypassing the 100 µm fine screen in between the ball mill and TowerMill circuits. This action has increased the circuit feed particle size distribution with a top size close to 1 mm. The specific energy consumption of the TowerMill circuit was approximately 3.4 kWh/t, and the circuit product sizes (P80) were ranged between 38 and 45 µm. A joint process improvement exercise was carried out to reduce the circuit product size closer to the magnetite liberation size, ie 35 µm. Among the activities were circuit audit, recommendation for improvement, modelling and simulation, multicomponent analysis, implementation of recommendations and quantification of the improvement. One of the key findings was the density effect of multicomponent minerals in the hydrocyclone. The analysis revealed that the low density coarser gangue minerals were bypassed to the hydrocyclone overflow stream that has resulted in a coarser particle size distribution. Meanwhile, more than 20 per cent of fine (-35 µm) high-density magnetite particles were recycled back to the mill through the hydrocyclone underflow stream and increased the circulating load. Based on these outcomes, several recommendations such as conversion to bottom feed configuration, use of smaller grinding media, high operating hydrocyclone pressure and additional grinding power to the TowerMill circuit were made to improve the overall circuit performances. Karara Mine has prioritised to implement those recommendations that have a minimal financial implication. Full-scale plant trials with bottom feed configuration and 17 mm grinding media were conducted to evaluate its performances. These trials have indicated that the grinding efficiency in the TowerMill was enhanced by 10 – 30 per cent. In May 2017, all the five TowerMills were converted to the bottom feed configuration. IN THE early summer of 1917, it became evident that the then existing sources of supply of guns and gun forgings were totally inadequate for the enormous and rapidly growing requirements of the Ordnance Department of the Army, so arrangements were made with sixteen makers of other products to take up the manufacture of guns and gun forgings. Nine of these makers were required to produce their own steel from the raw materials and convert it into rough machined gun forgings; the others finished and assembled these forgings into completed guns. In December, 1914, four of these makers of steel and rough gun forgings were instructed to manufacture the same amount of the 6-in. and 9.5-in. guns and howitzers. It, therefore, seemed practical .and profitable to assemble these makers into a small group, together with the officers of the Ordnance Department, and provide standard 'equipment in each of the four works for the production of these two types of guns. The advantages of this cooperation were immediately manifested, and there commenced an interchange of shop practice and a free discussion of facilities and methods that covered not only the equipment but the manufacturing processes.

THOSE familiar with mill-practice understand the work required of an average bucket-elevator, but I wish to call special attention to the wear on the buckets. I have been studying in what manner the life and service of the bucket might be improved, and I feel that an adjustable lip, attachable to each bucket without the aid of rivets, will be of material advantage. For illustration, consider the feed-elevator of a typical mill in the Cur d'Alène district. The ore is carried by water in a launder from the feed-rolls and dumped in the "boot" of the elevator, directly in front of the ascending bucket. Middlings from the return-rolls are similarly handled. Under this condition the bucket not only carries the ore, but also picks it up, and this latter requirement determines the life and service of the bucket. It might be said that it would be better practice to convey the feed to the elevator and dump it directly into the bucket, but at one mill at which this plan was tried the results were disappointing and the rubber belt was badly worn. The wear of the bucket is confined to the lip and the corners which have to pick up the material. When the lip on a corner of a 7- by 12-in. malleable cast-iron bucket is worn down about 3 in., the bucket is of no further value as a carrier and has to be replaced. The worn bucket, containing about three¬quarters by weight of the metal of the original bucket, has a scrap value of about 10 per cent. of that of a new bucket. To the cost of the bucket, however, should be added the time-cost of replacing the old bucket by a new one. This time-cost is considerable when the loss per hour, to cease operating the mill, is about $200. AN analysis of the bituminous coal situation by an authority who traces the production, mining, safety, markets and labor trends in comparison with other fuels. BEFORE 1918 the production of coal experienced a steady growth, with slight recessions in ouput in only twelve years (1837, 1841, 1852, 1855, 1861, 1874, 1876, 1889, 1894, 1905, 1909, 1914), and in each of these cases the loss was recovered in the following year and the increase continued. In each decade the output was doubled. Prices, while not high, allowed some profit. In 1918 during World War I, an output of 580 million tons was reached and with the exception of 1923 this total was not again reached until 1942, in World War 11. Losses of output in this period were much greater than ever before; in 1932 the total was 270 million tons less than in 1918 or 1923, and the loss after 1923 was not recovered until 1942. The greatest output was 631 million tons in 1947.

Inco's Copper Cliff Smelter Complex produces some 11 5,000 tonnes per year of nickel and 120,000 tonnes per year of copper. The Smelter flowsheet has changed a number of times over the years. The most recent changes were effected in the mid-1980's in response to new realities in metal markets and heightened awareness about the workplace environment. By 1994, the flowsheet will undergo yet another metamorphosis as part of Inco's SO2 Abatement Program. The paper discusses the improvements implemented during the 1980's and projects the processing in the Smelter through 1994.

In Australia's remote North West are located the operations of Cliffs Robe River, one of the world's largest iron ore projects. Initial project cost was $US300 million and required the construction of a deepwater port, two toms for 3000 people, a 105 Mw power station and 170 km of railroad, all in harsh, arid country over 1300 km from the nearest industrial centre. The ore occurs as goethite cappings on scattered mesas and averages 57 percent iron. All aspects of the project are reviewed from pre-operational research, through project construction to current operation.

"INTRODUCTION North Carolina has been the leading producer of mica in the United States, accounting for roughly 50 percent of the Nation's output. The producing area is a belt some 100 miles in width lying in the Mountain and Piedmont sections in the western part of the State. Ashe, Watauga, Avery, Mitchell, Yancey, Buncombe, Haywood, Jackson, Macon, Transylvania, Rutherford, Cleveland, and Lincoln Counties supply the bulk of production, while small amounts have been produced in Gaston, Catawba, Burke, Wilkes, Yadkin, Stokes, and Person Counties.To assist the operators and expedite the production of mica during the recent emergency, the Bureau of Mines drilled four of the more promising mica properties in this State. The results of this exploratory program are recorded in this report.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. Ground control problems are an important factor affecting safety, production, and efficiency in underground coal mines. A major portion of ground control problems encountered in underground coal mines can be attributed to geologic features in the strata surrounding the extracted coal seam. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has compiled information from numerous sources on the geological features that contribute to ground control problems in underground coal mines. The compilation includes (1) sedimentary features such as paleochannels, crevasse splays, clastic dikes, mold-and-cast structures, concretions, and lithologic factors, and (2) structural features such as folds, fractures, joints, cleat, and faults. The compiled information will aid in identifying the features, predicting their occurrence in advance of mining, and controlling or minimizing roof failure when these features are encountered in an underground coal mine.

This paper presents a successful case history of the ground improvement efforts and excavation of twenty-three cross passages between twin bore tunnels driven by EPB tunneling machines in Los Angeles, California on Section 1 of the Westside Subway Extension. Unique and complicated ground conditions local to the tunnel alignment include San Pedro sands, siltstone/claystone Fernando Formation, and zones of “asphalt impacted soils.” To provide water cut-off and soil stabilization, jet grouting was performed prior to TBM excavation at the location of many of the cross passages. However, upon investigating the cross passages prior to excavation, the subsurface conditions required additional measures and SEM tools to ensure successful completion of the project.

Rapid growth in the rate of surface mining for coal has caused many states to increase the rigor and complexity of their surface mining codes. The promulgation of Federal surface mining standards may cause those states containing Federal land to amend their codes also. Presented is an up-to-date review of these codes with tabular summaries that divide the codes into operative functions. These summaries will be of use to new operators, multiple-state operators, and state officials. Suggestions are made for industrial efforts to present workable and acceptable amendments to these codes.
