"Coals from the Corporation's Lingan and No. 26 mines are classified as high-volatile A bituminous, with a very low inherent ash and containing all essential properties to provide metallurgical coal, with the exception of a high sulphur content. Only through proper cleaning at low specific gravity can the pyritic sulphur fraction of the coal be liberated to an extent where final sulphur meets coking standards. This first section of the paper deals with the operation of a Dutch State Mines heavy-media cyclone circuit to achieve an actual separation in the region of 1.30 specific gravity. A discussion of the parameter of control which must be applied along with an appraisal of the results obtained is included in the paper.Introduction Very high fluidity and unusually low ash are the outstanding characteristics of coal from Devco's mines in the Harbour seam of the Sydney coal field. However, sulphur content, mainly pyritic, ranges from 1 to 2.50Jo. To obtain the low and consistent sulphur level required in metallurgical coking coals, preparation at low specific gravity is required. Metallurgical coke is used as the fuel in an iron blast furnace. Its sulphur content largely determines the quantity of slag required to remove it and therefore influences furnace productivity and unit costs. Typical data on the various coal properties of importance in the production of coke are included in Table 1."

"A new mineral sands operation is being developed in Georgia by Southern Ionics, Inc. (SII). Prevailing mineralogy and certain design constraints required detailed testing and circuit analysis to create a robust separation processes. The floating wet concentrator plant (WCP) and mineral separation plant (MSP) flow sheets were designed based on historical testing information and recent SII test campaigns on various composite feed samples. The flow sheets were finalized through rigorous process and orebody sequence modeling.The process uses traditional physical separation equipment; however a new MT spiral, the MG12, was selected for use on board the WCP for roughing duty. The MG12 spiral is a two-stage, twelve-turn spiral that has been proven to achieve very high recoveries of heavy minerals. The floating plant includes feed desliming operations, a central MT surge bin for optimum spiral circuit feed control and ancillary operations for concentrate and tailings handling. Scrubbed heavy mineral concentrate (HMC) is then transported to the MSP for concentration of the titanium and zirconium bearing mineral fractions.The testing, flowsheet development, and plant design will be described and explained, and a brief summary of the current project status will be given.IntroductionSouthern Ionics Inc. Of the many angles from which coal can be studied it is evident that some have a direct and others have only an indirect bearing on its physical or chemical nature . The more drastic the treatment employed in an investigation , the more inferential become the conclusions permissible from the experimental evidence obtained . Thus , ultimate and proximate analyses tell something concerning age , behavior on carbonization , and possible industrial usefulness , but nothing regarding structure or composition in the larger sense . Strong oxidation reveals the fact that benzenoid , pyrrol , and furane rings are prevalent in the chemical substances present , and milder oxidation indicates that the mass of coal , as in the case of the peats and lignites , is humic in character . But beyond such points of information , very little additional can be gained by the use of these more or less vigorous measures . To gain wider knowledge of the actual constituents of coal substance as found investigators have worked out systems of separation by means of solvents , of which a large number have been employed at various times both singly and in combination . The list of solvents includes petroleum ether , benzene , toluene , xylene , ethyl ether , alcohol , acetone , carbon bisulphide , pyridine , quinoline , aniline , phenol , tetralin , glycol ethyl ether glycol ethylether acetate , glycol methyl ether , glycol diethyl ether , pine oil , mesityl oxide furfural , benzaldehyde , ethylene oxide , rosin , caustic potash in solvents , amyl alcohol plus pyridine , chloroform , carbon tetrachloride , acetylene tetrachloride , naphthalene , and others . Once a coal has been extracted it has become common practice to subdivide the extract by means of partial solution in other and weaker solvents . Thus , we find the oily and solid bitumens of Fischer ( 1 ) , 3 Bone ( 2 ) and others ; the alpha , beta and gamma constituents of Wheeler ( 3 ) ; the classification of Novak and Hubacek ( 4 ) embracing oils , resins A , resins B , bitumens An , bitumens Bn , and bitumens Cn ; Crussard's ( 5 ) malthenes , asphaltenes , and carbenes , borrowed from asphalt terminology; and the 40 or more subdivisions of the phenol extract of coal worked out by Frazer and Hoffman ( 6 ) . Perhaps the primary object of interest in these many researches has been to find the coking principle of coal , and to study it and to learn why certain coals form hard , wellfused cokes , and others merely fall to pieces during carbonization . The origin of the various constituents of the gas and tar , the temperature at which each forms , and something of the mechanism of their synthesis have also been sought , as well as new bases for adjudging rank .

The Goondicum Crater industrial minerals deposit is located about 30 km east of Monto, Central Queensland, Australia. Early exploration programs in the 1990s found alluvial ilmenite along the banks of the Burnett River. This mineralisation was traced upstream to the Goondicum Crater. The Goondicum Crater is a topographic feature centred on a roughly circular 6 km diameter layered gabbro complex. Significant ilmenite, apatite, titano-magnetite and feldspar mineralisation are present in a weathered horizon up to 25 m thick. After several drilling campaigns in the Crater and subsequent feasibility studies, the project was developed by Monto Minerals Ltd, an ASX listed company, in 2007. However, the project never achieved production performance expectations and ran out of commissioning funds. The company subsequently went into voluntary administration in August 2008.In 2009, the RMM Capital group, of Brisbane, took control of Monto Resources Pty Ltd, and renamed the company Belridge Enterprises Pty Ltd (Belridge). Belridge commissioned a redevelopment study aimed at recommencing mining and processing operations. As part of the redevelopment study the authors planned a drilling campaign, managed a quality control program and developed a block model. This paper describes the drilling program, analytical procedures, quality control procedures and the preparation of the block model.The block model for the resource estimate was created using 1 m high blocks, wireframes defining the main material types, and 2.5 m thick horizontal search ellipsoids with a radial pattern. The deposit was ‘flattened’ prior to modelling. To assist with the economic evaluation of the project, each block in the model was assigned a net dollar value based on economic parameters provided by Belridge, including anticipated revenues and costs. This modelling technique allowed for efficient investigation of various scenarios and was used extensively in the development and optimisation of the project’s financial model. At a zero net value per block, comparable to a break-even cut-off grade of four per cent ilmenite equivalent, the Indicated plus Measured resource is estimated at 51 Mt, averaging 4.1 per cent ilmenite, 1.9 per cent apatite and 2.5 per cent titano-magnetite.

"Abstract This paper presents a ground improvement implementation case under a raft foundation of a local hospital. The selected ground improvement method is Wet Soil Mixing (WSM) technique. Soil mixing is increasingly applied to environmental applications and ground stabilization in geotechnical projects. In this technique, weak soil is mixed with cementitious slurry to improve the characteristics of the soil. The investigated case is one of the pioneering WSM ground improvement technique implementation cases in Turkey. The soil profile is mainly consisted of low plasticity clay. The effect of ground improvement is verified by a series of laboratory tests and four in-situ pile loading tests. The results of in-situ pile load tests on constructed soilcrete columns showed an acceptable factor of safety for the bearing capacity of the WSM columns. Measured bearing capacities in all four tested columns were nearly 20% higher than calculated values. In addition, a set of samples are obtained from the constructed columns and unconfined compression tests have been conducted. The laboratory test results indicate that the selected cementitious slurry has a sufficient efficiency to form the stabilizing columns.IntroductionIn the construction industry, stabilization of the soft ground by lime or cement stabilization is a widely used technique. In ground improvement systems deep mixing method (DMM) results in the same stabilization in deep portions of the soft soil profile by mixing cementitious slurry by means of mechanical augers. The pioneering cases of modern deep mixing application can be traced back to the year 1970 that was used for the stabilization of marine soils below the water level for the construction of harbor structures (Terashi et al., 1979). Nowadays, DMM is shown to be a proper and efficient method for the foundation of the structures and embankments on land. Some recent studies also reported that reasonable settlement reduction range in the stabilized soils under the foundation of structures (Archeewa et al., 2011). In addition to reduction of the structural settlement under service loads, deep mixing methods are also utilized when there is a concern with contaminated soil and groundwater or groundwater control (Andromalos and Bahner, 2003).Although, the DMM is shown to be a successful method in numerous studies for improvement of a wide range of soil types such as organics, fine-grained, and coarse grained material, it has some limitations (Archeewa et al. 2011, Jameson et al. 2010, Jelisic and Leppanen 2004, Lambrechts and Roy 1997, Meyersohn 2007, Miki and Nozu 2004, Olsson et al. 2008, O’Rourke and McGinn 2004, Stewart et al. 2004, Yang et al. 2011). High soil density and stiffness could damage deep mixing rigs. Engineering properties of the soilcrete columns changes based on the soil type, water content and other factors such as organic content of the available soil profile, so properties of the generated soilcrete should be verified by a set of rigorous testing procedures (Puppala et al. 2004).Based on the general classifications presented in the ground improvement literature, deep soil mixing method is divided into two main types of dry or wet mixing methods. In the dry and mixing methods compressed air and water are utilized as the binder transporter medium respectively (Moseley and Krisch, 2004). In addition, DMM methods can be categorized based on the employed mixing methods during the construction. In this study, the main aim is to present and elaborate on the selected method is known as Wet Speed Soil Mixing (WSSM)."

"Abstract - The Lilypad Lakes property is host to a group of Ta-mineralized dikes that occur over an area of at least 10 km2. Field relationships are consistent with a syn- to late syn-tectonic timing for their emplacement (with respect to the major regional D1 episode of deformation), with several of the dikes exhibiting a steeply dipping, open, S- to M- to Z-shaped fold geometry. Individual dikes range up to 30 m wide (Rubellite Dyke, Pollucite Dyke), have strike lengths of up to 750 m (e.g., JJ Dyke), and are continuous to depths of greater than 250 m (e.g., Rubellite Dyke, Pollucite Dyke). Typically, they display sharp intrusive contacts characterized by the development of thin, holmquistite-rich haloes. The Tamineralized dikes are comprised of silica- and alumina-rich, sodic, granitic pegmatites that display extreme levels of geochemical fractionation (K/Rb typically < 10.0, as low as 2.2; Nb/Ta typically < 0.20, as low as 0.03), and enrichments in an economically important group of lithophile elements, most notably Li, Rb, Cs, and Ta. Geochemical assays of individual surface grab and drill core samples have yielded values as high as 1.51 wt.% Li2O, 1.25 wt.% Rb2O, 6.21 wt.% Cs2O, and 0.108 wt.% Ta2O5. Diamond drilling has established the presence of wide (~20 m), potentially ore-grade intersections of Ta mineralization (>0.045 wt.% Ta2O5) in both the Rubellite and the Pollucite Dykes.Three Ta-oxide minerals (microlite, wodginite, manganotantalite) of primary origin predominate in the Ta-mineralized dikes, where they occur as fine, disseminated grains in the albite-rich pegmatite matrix. The sequence of crystallization is typically manganotantalite wodginite microlite, which conforms to a well-established paragenetic sequence for rare-element granitic pegmatites in general. All three of the primary Ta oxides are characterized by a high degree of chemical purity (e.g., average Ta concentrations in microlite from 77-79 wt.% Ta2O5), a compositional feature consistent with the extreme levels of geochemical fractionation characteristic of the host granitic pegmatites, and one that indicates that the Lilypad Lakes pegmatites are likely to produce Ta mineral concentrates of the very highest quality.Locally, a second generation of Ta minerals is present, restricted to small vugs in the pegmatite matrix that are surrounded by fine aggregates of K-rich mica or clay. The secondary Ta minerals are dominated by microlite, which is typically intergrown with fluorite and Fe-sulphides, and is distinguished from its primary counterpart by its lower Ta content (around 70 wt.% Ta2O5) and much higher concentration of uranium (up to 9 wt.% UO2). Also, secondary microlite consistently yields low analytical totals from electron microprobe analysis, suggesting that it is H2O-rich. The presence of this second, vug-related generation of microlite, together with the occurrence of localized networks of crosscutting fractures that host high concentrations of Cs and Rb (in the minerals pollucite and Rb-Kfeldspar), suggests that a late-stage, fluid-dominated metasomatic/hydrothermal event may have been important in certain sections of the dikes, and has effected a redistribution of the economically important elements Ta and Cs."

Hydrometallurgical treatment of sulphide based material allows for a balance between costs, recovery, and flexibility in final product selection. Glencore Technology’s hydrometallurgical solution to the treatment of sulphide ores is the Albion Process™, comprising two main steps. The first step involves ultra-fine grinding using the IsaMill™, which minimises the potential for passivation of the leaching sulphide and increases surface area for oxidation during the Albion Process™ leach. The second step is the oxidation of the finely ground sulphide concentrate utilising the HyperSparge™ for oxygen injection in Glencore Technology’s Oxidative Leach Reactors (OxiLeach™).

"The development of industry and intensive use of natural resources leads to a significant decrease in the share of reserves of rich ores, deposits of which have nearly all been exploited. Large amounts of displaced rock mass are accumulated, significant emissions of gas and dust from mining, dust from dumps and tailing pits, ingress of chemicals and toxic elements in surface and groundwater all can have negative effects on existing ecosystems and human health. Especially dangerous is the impact in Arctic regions with extreme climate conditions. The maintenance of overburden dumps and tailings dams requires significant capital and material costs. In this paper, some mining enterprises of the Murmansk region, in the Russian Federation, consider the environmental problems of the industry and propose some solutions.INTRODUCTIONThe safety of environment during the extraction and processing of minerals is a very acute problem throughout the whole world. The problem acquires a specific character in the Russian Federation. There, rather poor minerals, often existing in unconventional forms and including several mineral components are processed. The Russian mineral base has a specific geographical location; most of the deposits under operation are located in the Subarctic or Arctic regions, as well as in Siberia and in the Far East. Vast amounts of rock waste and tailings pose serious economic and ecological problems in mining regions. The operation of overburden heaps and tailings requires considerable capital and material costs. The dumps withdraw vast lands from potential commercial use. Large amounts of mined rock disturb the existing geological balance; emissions of gas and dust which accompany the mining operations, dusting of waste heaps and tailings, emissions of reagents and heavy metals into natural surface and ground waters all can produce negative effects on existing ecosystems and human health."

New discoveries of gas in the southern counties featured the petroleum industry in West Virginia during 194;. Drilling for oil increased slightly over 1944 and a small increase of initial production resulted. Out of 28 wildcats drilled, there were 16 gas discoveries and 12 dry holes. No commercial oil was found in the 28 wells.

Steel props are a type of standing support utilized in coal mines to support mine roof. In addition to the vertical roof loading, sometimes the steel props are subjected to lateral loading of spalled ribs. To enhance the safety of mine workers, the performance characteristics of the steel prop was studied under different scenarios of vertical and lateral loadings. Quik Stik props were used for use in this study. A uniaxial compression loading test was conducted for the Quik Stik prop assembly (inner and outer tubes, ball bearings, collar) to investigate the loading mechanism of the prop. Rupture tests were conducted for the inner and outer steel tubes of the Quik Stik props to estimate the yielding strength of the steel tubes. Nine Quik Stik props of 8-ft high were tested using the Mine Roof Simulator (MRS) at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Pittsburgh research facility. Three props were tested under vertical loading to measure the vertical loading capacity of the props. Six props were tested under lateral loadings with low and high roof-to-floor convergences to measure the lateral loading capacity and the retained vertical loading capacity of the props during lateral loading. Vertical loading tests showed that the tested props could be classified as yieldable supports with a stable load capacity of about 110 kips to 140 kips. Lateral loading tests showed that the vertical load capacities of the tested props were diminished because of applying lateral loads, and the props behaved as nonyielding supports with a maximum lateral load capacity of about 8.5 kips to 9.5 kips at stable lateral displacement up to 3 inches.

Continuous monitoring of mining impacts on the surrounding environment is a necessary sustainability criterion. Traditional monitoring approaches such as in situ sampling and airborne and satellite-based remote sensing have several limitations. Over the past few decades, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have evolved into popular platforms for remote sensing. UAV-based remote sensing has been successfully applied in different sectors, including agriculture, forestry, urban environments and disaster management. However, the potential of UAVs for mine environmental monitoring has not yet been fully established. Mother Earth has had a long life extending over two billion years, during which time she has changed from a mass of incandescent gases to her present form, exhibiting a density stratification from the extremely tenuous gases of the stratosphere to the heavy central nickeliron core. Man is now mining all the principal divisions of Mother Earth except the centrosphere. Nitrogen, oxygen, neon, and other rarer gases are being recovered from the air; magnesium, bromium, potash, borates, and other salts from lakes and seas; brines, medicinal mineral waters, and great quantities of water for domestic and industrial uses from surface and subsurface reservoirs; and, from the rocky crust, many minerals and fuels for our present industrial civilization as well as plants and animals for food and shelter. Productivity of soil is influenced both positively and negatively by man. There is some cause to bewail what may be considered a wasteful influence of men on soil. The general situation is bad in spots but not hopeless. The passing of large areas of fertile land in some areas is merely to be noted and not to be mourned. These lands could not have been used without decrease in their fertility. The productivity factor is affected by human activities. Many soils in the eastern and southern states are far richer and more productive now than they were at any previous time. Arctic soils are not productive

BHP-Utah Coal Limited operates 33 draglines of varying sizes in the Bowen Basin of Central Queensland. The group&apos;s operations with draglines commenced in 1963 with the establishment of opencut operations at the then TPM Moura Mine and continued through expansion of that mine, the commissioning of the Utah Development Company Blackwater Mine in 1968, and the subsequent establishment of six (6) other large opencut mines, all in the general area over the next fourteen years. These operations generally commenced with boxcuts on the sub-crop at depths of 15 to 25 metres. Over the years, depths have increased so that average depths now are in the 45 to 50m range. It was soon realised that dragline operations would have to be supplemented with additional stripping equipment. In 1981, a symposium "45m and Beyond" was held in Rockhampton to assess the problems associated with such "deep" stripping. Subsequently, dragline operations have continued and although addi- tional stripping capacity has been added, in many instances, draglines have been used and are being used to dig depths greater than 45m, some- times as much as 65 to 70m.

This paper discusses various issues surrounding the metallurgical control for furnaces, especially focusing on processes with long time-constants and æmetallurgical memoriesÆ. Examples will focus on furnaces accepting particulate and sometimes ill-defined feeds, eg submerged-arc furnaces, blast furnaces, secondary scrap smelting operations, recycling operations, waste incinerators, etc. Generally, because of the usually higher metallurgical time constant of these furnaces, these reactors have to be controlled in a feed-forward manner by the use of a hybrid of æblack boxÆ or empirical and ægrey boxÆ semi-empirical first principles metallurgical modelling and simulation techniques in a supervisory metallurgical control capacity.

"A significant area of Outotec’s business involves fluidized bed roasting. With several decades of experience, more than 300 reference plants and strong R&D capabilities, the company provides several industries with optimum processing solutions. Applications include oxidation and sulfation of sulfides found in copper, pyrite and zinc concentrates. Gold production and de-arsenifying roasting are also within this scope. This paper describes the latest furnace developments and includes novel trends. Moreover, hot and wet gas cleaning systems are examined focusing on unit operations related to the removal of components such as dust, SO2 for sulfuric acid production, fumes, halides, Hg, hydrocarbons, nitrous oxides and metals.INTRODUCTIONGenerally, when defining roasting processes, it can be stated that the respective primary pyrometallurgical reaction is exothermic, of gas-solid nature and relates to a value solid product. These processes are a key focus within Outotec’s scope and include: (i) dead roasting (ii) sulfating roasting (iii) partial de-arsenifying roasting and (iv) two-stage, de-arsenifying roasting.Dead roasting involves the oxidation of a given sulfide, thus allowing for a subsequent leaching process, and has been applied to producing ZnO. Dead roasting of pyrite has also been extensively utilized with a primary goal of producing sulfuric acid. In contrast, sulfating roasting involves converting a sulfide to its sulfate, enabling a selective sulfation of components, such as Cu or Co, and their separation from ferrous components during leaching (produced sulfates are soluble). Partial roasting involves partially oxidating the metal sulfide to its oxide with the simultaneous production of gaseous As4O6, which is handled during gas cleaning. The solid product, containing hardly any As, is rich in S and can be fed to a respective smelter (e.g. in the case of Cu). Alternatively, if the production of oxide is required, a dead roasting step is added after the partial roasting step, with the overall process considered as two-stage roasting."

Various strategic projects were carried out in 2002 to increase the capacity of Teck Cominco&apos;s integrated zinc-lead smelter at the Trail operations site in British Columbia, Canada. The lead smelter treats the iron residue from the zinc plant and optimizes the overall zinc recovery. This paper summarizes two options that were considered to reduce the zinc content in the leaching iron residue. The first option involved increasing the capacity of an existing hot acid leach circuit up to the iron loading constraints of the circuit. The second sought to maximize the hot acid leach capability by separating the ferrite-rich solids, followed by aggressive hot acid leaching (>100°C) and subsequent iron precipitation. Different forms of iron precipitation were reviewed in order to determine the most effective and economical approach. Among these, was a novel high temperature ferrite conversion process. The technical results and selection criteria are presented together with possible ways to integrate the process concepts into the current sulphide leaching plant circuit. The first option was selected for implementation and is currently being operated successfully.

The instrumentation and monitoring of rock behaviour have played an important and necessary role in the practice of potash, rocksalt, gypsum, trona and coal mining. The art of rock instrumentation applied to soft rock and coal mining has progressively evolved over the past years and will surely continue to advance at a faster pace in the future as a result of the technological revolution we experience today. The development of sophisticated mine-wide data communications systems is being used for instrumentation and sensor automation, and laser, sonar and geophysics technology are being continuously adapted for rock monitoring purposes. In this paper, the author provides an overview of typical rock instrumentation used today and offers some views of the progressive evolution in rock mechanics instrumentation sophistication and design.

Traditionally, end users have used metallic piping for fluid handling and little is known about the advantages (or limitations) of non-metallic piping systems. This presentation will review custom FRP pipe systems and their use in severe corrosive and erosive process streams. These systems can be designed to various pressure and temperature ratings and different components (such as resin and glass type) can be varied to suit the process conditions

There have been fundamental structural changes in the industry. And I think that SME has been quite successful in coping with these changes as well. There has been a reorientation in how the minerals industry does business. It used to be called rationalization. Today we call it reengineering. In addition, the minerals industry has become more complex and more global. Technology adoption in the mining industry has been steadily increasing over the past decade, driven by the need to improve operational efficiency, safety, sustainability, and profitability. As mining companies wish to implement solutions to improve mining safety and productivity, various technologies are being integrated into mining operations to enhance processes, reduce risks, and optimise resource utilisation. Adoption of new technologies such as autonomous trucks requires a strong focus on foundational operational technology (OT) and a systems-thinking approach. OT support is critical however, OT is traditionally not considered or integrated into standard maintenance activities. Consequently, sourcing and applying service support to OT systems in real-time has posed significant challenges to date. Neglecting the monitoring and upkeep of these operational technologies and equipment can lead to a host of adverse consequences. Operating instability becomes more prevalent, necessitating reactive measures, and the vulnerability to cybersecurity threats increases significantly. To address OT monitoring and maintenance challenges, a systems wide mindset and remote support discipline must be utilised. Remote operations support refers to real-time, 24/7 monitoring, control and support of site OT: network, production systems, maintenance systems, enterprise systems and mobile and fixed plant through a single interface remote from site. The presence of a disciplined team, grounded in a systems-oriented approach, is of the utmost importance to remote monitoring, given the intricate interdependencies of OT systems. The ability to understand the relationships among multiple systems, coupled with the capacity to distinguish between symptoms and root causes, assumes a pivotal role in operations. Through diligent monitoring and the astute understanding of system thresholds, remote operations support can actively identify and alleviate constraints, in turn, serving as the enabler for transformative advancements in technology output.
