The design and operation of the Koppers powdered-coal gasifier and its auxiliaries at Louisiana, Mo., are described. This unit was designed to convert 1 ton of coal per hour with oxygen and superheated steam into synthesis gas - primarily carbon monoxide and hydrogen. The first run was made on May 4, 1949. After this, 44 short runs (less than 8 hours each) and 1 long run (lasting 11 days) were made. Total gasification time was 420 hours. The gasifier was not cooled down during the year when these runs were made. After an initial period of test operations and equipment proving, during which 12 runs were made, the effect of numerous variables on gasifier performance was studied. The long run was made primarily to check the equipment in sustained operation. Detailed data from these runs are presented.

Mine-to-mill studies have previously demonstrated downstream productivity benefits from relatively modest increases in blast energy, or powder factor. These increases have up to now been limited by safety and environmental constraints, since excessive blast energy can result in flyrock, unacceptable vibration, airblast and wall damage.Here, a new blasting method that overcomes these constraints is presented. For the first time it is possible to employ powder factors that are several fold higher than conventional blasting. Independent modelling has shown that such powder factors can potentially increase mill throughput by 20 to 40 per cent. The economic implications are substantial, both in terms of increasing production in existing operations and in consideration of capital and plant requirements for greenfield sites. In addition, mill electricity and grinding media consumption and their associated costs and energy and emissions penalties can be reduced.This method represents a step-change in blasting practices. It involves a novel design utilising dual blast layers within a single blast event, all initiated with state-of-the art electronic blasting systems. The energies in the lower layer can be as high as five times the standard energies, providing for intense fragmentation of the ore. Results from blast models have been confirmed in field trials of the method.Open cut gold mining, in particular, stands to benefit from this method. As gold grades decline, milling costs and throughput increasingly become constraints on production that can be alleviated with this new method. Additionally, it opens possibilities for improved recovery. Blast modelling studies show that dilution of gold ore within the blast can be managed with the new method. Furthermore, it has been shown that vibration from the new method is actually lower than from conventional blasting, allowing the use of the technique in proximity to mine highwalls and other key infrastructure such as underground orepasses.It is concluded that this new method could substantially increase gold mine production and profitability while reducing overall energy consumption and associated emissions.CITATION:Brent, G F, Dare-Bryan, P, Hawke, S and Rothery, M, 2013. Introduction The preparation of the following paper has been undertaken in the belief that a description of the development methods and equipment used at Lake Shore, at the present time, will prove of general ? interest. Working depths of nearly a mile and a half in shaft sinking and of more than one mile for stoping operations have imposed problems not encountered at shallower horizons. Among the problems contributing to the difficulty of mining at extreme depths might be mentioned: Rock pressures Ventilation Hoisting Shorter work period at the face Geological considerations In the main, the effects of these factors add to the difficulty of mining at depth, but it is not entirely true to say that each must necessarily become more pronounced as mining operations proceed to greater depths. Corrective measures may, in some cases, retard the effect and in others may even relieve some of the difficulty. It is proposed here to discuss these features in the light of the experience at Lake Shore, and to present, in some detail, the current practice in shaft sinking and in driving ore and waste passes, raises, drifts and cross-cuts.

In this study, the dissolution behavior of copper and arsenic from five different copper concentrates containing 21-34.7 %wt. of Cu, 1.3-7.3 %wt. of As and 15.6-27.5 %wt. of Fe were investigated under high pressure oxidative leaching conditions. Leaching experiments were conducted using different leaching reagents such as ferric sulfate, sodium chloride, deionized water, sulfuric acid and ferric sulfate-sodium chloride mixture in order to compare the effectiveness of each on the dissolution of copper and arsenic from copper concentrates. The effects of ferric sulfate (0.1-1 mol/L), sodium chloride (0.1-0.5 mol/L) and leaching temperature (100-180C) were investigated under 1 MPa autoclave pressure , particle size >45 m, pulp density of 100 g/L, stirring speed of 750 rpm and leaching time of 60 min. Results showed that the most effective leaching reagents for the dissolution of copper are 0.34 M NaCl and a mixture of 0.1 M Fe2(SO4)3 - 0.34 M NaCl, in which As extraction did not exceed 7%. The copper concentration in the pregnant leach solution obtained after leaching using 0.1 M Fe2(SO4)3 - 0.34 M NaCl was 13-30 g/L, while the concentration of As and Fe were in a range between 0.3-1 g/L and 0.2-10 g/L at 160C. INTRODUCTION Copper sulfide minerals, such as chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), chalcocite (Cu2S) and covellite (CuS) are used for the production of copper in mining and metallurgical industries worldwide. The conventional pyrometallurgical processing followed by electrorefining is a common process for the production of high purity copper (Moskalyk, & Alfantazi, 2003; Padilla, Aracena, & Ruiz, 2012). However, the degradation of copper content and an increase in the amount of metal impurities, especially arsenic (As), antimony (Sb) and bismuth (Bi) in copper concentrates cause serious problems to the production of copper and environmental pollution (Basha, Selvi, Ramasamy, & Chellammal, 2008; Long, Peng, & Bradshaw, 2012). Hydrometallurgical processes are used to recover metals from refractory ores, concentrates and tailings by leaching (Long, Peng, & Bradshaw, 2012; Masloboev, Seleznev, Svetlov, & Makarov, 2018). During the last decades, hydrometallurgical processing for the recovery of copper from enargite-bearing copper ores and concentrates has been extensively investigated due to its relatively more environmentally benign and less capital costs than the conventional pyrometallurgical processes (Long, Peng, & Bradshaw, 2012; Masloboev, Seleznev, Svetlov, & Makarov, 2018; Choubey, Lee, Kim, & Kim 2018). However, several issues facing the hydrometallurgical processing are incomplete extraction of copper associated with the coprecipitation of iron compounds, difficult stabilization of toxic impurities and production of a contaminated copper product (Dreisinger, 2003; Safarzadeh, Moats, & Miller, 2014). Hence, a number of studies have been conducted on the selective dissolution of copper from copper ores and concentrates or selective removal of arsenic leaving a clean copper residue using various leaching reagents or lixiviants (Safarzadeh, Moats, & Miller, 2014; Mihajlovic, Strbac, Zivkovic, Kovacevic, & Stehernic, 2007; Tongamp, Takasaki, & Shibayama, 2009). More extensive studies on the selective extraction of copper from enargite- bearing copper ores and concentrates are much needed to improve copper recovery.

Mineral exploration carried out in Ireland since the mid-1950s has resulted in the discovery of ore deposits that are now in production atTynagh (Pb-Zn-Cu-Ag), Silvermines (Zn-Pb) and nearby Ballynoe (barite), and Gortdrum (Cu-Ag-Hg); a major Zn-Pb deposit at Navan that is now being drilled prior to development; potentially productive deposits at Keel (Zn-Cd-Pb), Ballinalack (Zn-Pb) and Aherlow (Cu-Ag); and a number of interesting prospects, including one of spodumene. Underground exploration of a formerly extensively mined copper deposit at Allihies has outlined new, albeit currently uneconomic, reserves at depth. The copper and pyrite deposits at Avoca have in recent years been re-explored and are now again being worked. Most Irish ore deposits are in the lower half of the Lower Carboniferous succession of limestones and subordinate shales and sandstones, and this stratigraphic zone is being most intensively explored at present. Other geological units under active exploration are Ordovician sediments-volcanics belts, Caledonian granites, and parts of the Old Red Sandstone and Dalradian series. Surface prospecting is made difficult in many places by glacial and other superficial deposits, including peat and alluvium. Geochemical prospecting methods have been outstandingly successful and primarily responsible for most new discoveries. Boulder hunting and outcrop prospecting have proved effective in detailed investigations of geochemically anomalous areas. Some parts of the country have been covered by three separate airborne geophysical surveys, albeit without success so far. The induced polarisation technique, the most widely used ground geophysical method, has contributed to several discoveries. The scope of application of electromagnetic surveys is more restricted than that of induced polarisation, but the method has been effective in a few cases and has contributed to the Tynagh discovery. To date, the resistivity and self-potential methods have found little application. Magnetic surveys are not applicable directly in the search for ore deposits of the various known types, but can be helpful in outlining geological structures in some areas. The gravity method has been used successfully in a survey over the Zn—Pb deposit at Navan ; it has also proved effective in trials over a blind sulphide deposit at Tynagh that cannot be detected with geoelectrical methods. This report describes exhaust-emission data from 10 diesel engines: six 4-cycle, direct-injection, naturally aspirated engines; two 4-cycle, direct-injection, turbocharged engines; one 4-cycle, precombustion-chamber, turbo-charged engine; and one 2-cycle, direct-injection engine. These engines were tested over a 3-year period (1968-70). Lowest emissions were obtained with a precombustion-chamber engine. Emissions from the 2-cycle, direct-injection engine fell within the range of emission rates for the 4-cycle, naturally aspirated, direct-injection engines. Excluding the precombustion-chamber engine and excepting one of the 4-cycle, naturally aspirated engines, carbon monoxide emission rates were about the same for all engines tested. Test data on smoke, odor, and emissions of hydrocarbons, oxides of nitro-gen, carbon monoxide, and aldehydes are given.

"SynopsisThe process of joining materials by friction is based on generating the heat necessary to create a solid-state mechanical bond between two faying surfaces to be joined. In simple terms, the components to be joined are subjected to frictional heating between rubbing surfaces, causing an increase in interface temperature and leading to localized softening of interface material, creating what is described as a ’third body’ plasticized layer. This plasticized zone reduces the energy input rate from frictional heating and hence prevents macroscopic melting. The plasticized layer can no longer transmit sufficient stress as it effectively behaves as a lubricant (Boldyrev and Voinov, 1980; Godet, 1984; Singer, 1998; Suery, Blandin, and Dendievel, 1994). The potential for this solid-state frictional joining process to create high-performance joints between, for example, dissimilar materials with limited detrimental metallurgical impact, and reduced defect population and residual stress level, has had a very significant impact on fabrication and repair in industrial sectors such as transport. This paper presents a brief overview of the advances made within the family of friction processing technologies that could potentially be exploited in the nuclear industry as alternative joining and repair techniques to fusion welding.Modern friction processing technologies can be placed into two main categories: those that make use of a consumable tool to achieve the intended repair or joint (friction stud and friction hydro-pillar processing) and those making use of a non-consumable tool (friction stir welding). The most mature friction joining technology is friction rotary welding, where a joint is formed between original parent materials only. A new addition in this category is linear friction welding, which opens the potential for joining complex near-net-shape geometries by friction heating. The continuous innovation in friction processing over the last 25 years has led to the development of a number of unique processes and applications, highlighting the adaptability of friction processes for specialized applications for high-value engineering components.IntroductionAssessing the potential for using alternative joining and repair techniques for specific applications in a given industrial sector is informed by an appreciation of the current size and potential growth in that sector. Power generation by nuclear fission has been out of favour over the past few years, due to several high-profile nuclear incidents, e.g. the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster, as well as concerns over disposal of nuclear waste and spent fuel rods. However, due to rapid increases in the demand for electricity, coupled with many fossil-fuel fired plants reaching end-of-life, there is renewed interest in installing additional nuclear capacity."

The last part consists of a summary of the present study.

Minnesota contains a major low- grade copper-nickel sulfide resource within the Duluth Gabbro Complex. Several companies have actively explored this resource. Open pit mining would be required to develop portions of the resource, and as a result, large quantities of sulfide-bearing lean ore and waste rock would be stockpiled. Although the problems associated with high-sulfide tailings and acid mine drainage are well documented, the leaching characteristics of low-grade mineralized stockpiles must be understood for environmental impact assessment, siting, and planning. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and AMAX have cooperated in a research program to study leaching and revegetation -of test stock- piles, Six small (1600 'tons) stockpiles were constructed at the MINNAMAX Project Site and they range in composition from 0.29 to 043 g % copper, 0.075 to 0.09% nickel, and 0.6 to 1.45% sulfur. Two of the stockpiles were covered with mineral soil, one was covered with topsoil, and three were not treated Revegetation plots were established on the piles which received a soil cover. Leachate samples and flow measurements were collected at the base of the piles. Initial results indicate that metal concentrations in leachate samples range from 10 to 10,000 times the concentrations found in the streams of the area. During the first growing season, the test pile covered with topsoil yielded 30% less water than untreated test piles. No reduction in yield was observed for the piles that were covered with the less fertile mineral soil. First-year vegetative growth, expressed as biomass, was four times greater on the-topsoil pile than on the mineral soil piles. The long-term effects of vegetation on leachate quantity and quality continue to be investigated.

The Pilbara region of Western Australia is well known for its abundant exports of hematite-goethite deposits, which have been mined and exported since the 1960s. Magnetite has also been mined in Australia throughout this period, although historically of much lower production volumes (WA Iron Ore profile, 2016). Magnetite offers a source supply of material >66 per cent iron grade product, which is used as premium feed (predominantly pellets) to blast furnaces or specialised steel mills.The Iron Bridge project area contains outcropping magnetite and hematite banded iron formation (BIF), which within the region was recognised as having potential to host economic mineralisation during the 1960s. Development within the project area, however, did not commence until Fortescue Metals Group acquired the tenements based on a 2004 agreement, formed a joint venture with interested groups and then initiated an assessment for magnetite (rather than hematite) mining potential. The combined deposits now have an identified large mineral resource inventory, with test work demonstrating they are able to produce a magnetite concentrate of greater than 66 per cent Fe over an extended mine life. This concentrate would be suitable for forming pellets or feed for direct reduced iron products.The deposits form a singular orebody, approximately 12 km in length by 1 km in width and extending to depths beyond 600 m. The four main deposits are geographically separate and have subtle mineralogical differences, thought driven by the degree of deformation and alteration within each area.Definition of the stratigraphy, structure and key mineralogy of the deposits has been carried out through several stages of exploration and project development. This has also included recent mining and processing of more than 1 Mt of feed material to an on-site processing facility. This demonstrated at a production scale that dry plus wet processing techniques can efficiently separate the magnetite from the gangue minerals to form a suitable (marketable) product.Geometallurgical classification of the host stratigraphy has been carried out from analysing the high volume of quantitative data available for this deposit. This has allowed definition of mappable units within the fresh BIF to be used as a driver in mine scheduling, delivering optimal feed to the processing plant.Construction of mine and processing facilities is expected to commence once all technical risks have been addressed, market conditions are deemed appropriate and approval is given by the joint venture partners.CITATION:Simpson, C, 2017. Heatings, fires and explosions in New South Wales (NSW) and Queensland coal mines since 1972, are reviewed. Geological and mine settings are outlined. Where available, gas analysis and critical decisions are discussed. This paper updates work by NSW Department of Mineral Resources (1995) and the Queensland Department of Mines and Energy in a report on fires and explosion in Queensland coal mines (Richardson and Ham, 1996). Incident data has important applications in terms of evidence-based risk assessment and identifying key issues to be integrated into competency based training programs. Predictive indicators are reviewed in terms of coal parameters in seams where the incidents occurred.

"SUMMARYMagnetic and gravimetric surveys wore conducted over an area of ap¬proximately 1,400 square miles in the bauxite district of central Arkansas. The primary purpose of these surveys was to discover any possible buried and hitherto unknown syenite masses favorable for the occurrence of bauxite and to determine the approximate position of the buried flanks of the known syenite masses which might offer conditions favorable for the discovery of new ore bodies.Those surveys indicated that the various syenite outcrops were domes or bosses on a large batholith and that ether similar domes occurred on the batholith but did net outcrop.Drilling on the local geophysical anomalies proved the presence of 10 buried domes, but only 2 of them were found to project above the upper surface of the Midway clays, a requisite of conditions favorable for the occurrence of bauxite ore bodies. The geophysical data indicated the approximate configuration of the buried flanks of the known syenite coutcrops, and the portions of these flanks that project above the Midway have now been outlined more accurately by drilling.The geophysical surveys have produced evidence permitting the elimi¬nation of a large area as unfavorable for the occurrence of bauxite.Magnetic surveys extending along the Midway-Wilcox contact from Gurdon, in Clark County, on the southwest to Searcy, in White County, on the northwest have proved the improbability of the existence of other syenite masses similar to those found in Pulaski and Saline Counties. A detailed magnetic survey of the Magnet Cove area in Hot Spring County has proved that the syenite mass exposed in that locality is an isolated intrusion and entirely unrelated to those of Pulaski and Saline Counties. This syenite mass does not occur under conditions believed to be favorable for the occurrence of bauxite."

"This paper summarizes research that was done at the Mines Branch, Ottawa, to evaluate samples of phosphogypsum for gypsum products manufacture. The samples were from phosphate fertilizer facilities at: Port Maitland, Ontario ; Valleyfield, Quebec; and Fort Saskatchewan and Redwater, Alberta. All samples were wet-screened, washed, filtered and calcined in a laboratory kettle at atmospheric pressure. Tests were also made at higher pressures in a small autoclave. The gypsum and resulting hemi-hydrate, being acidic, were treated before, during and after calcining with various bases. The hemi-hydrate products were checked for time of set, compressive strength and bond to gypsum wallboard paper. The results of this study indicate that phosphogypsum from each of the sources investigated has potential as a substitute for mined gypsum in gypsum products manufacture. Pilot-scale testing is recommended to confirm that the product would be satisfactory for the manufacture of plaster products on a commercial basis."

"Froth depth, along with reagent addition and aeration rate, is one of the crucial factors that can be used to control a flotation circuit. Sub-optimal setpoints and disruptions in levels have a severe adverse influence on grades and recoveries. A novel control strategy has been developed which provides exceptionally tight regulation of pulp levels. The controller observes and acts on all the flotation levels simultaneously. This provides a clear improvement over the standard approach, which is to use a set of Pl controllers. The system has been run on several industrial plants and has resulted in reduced fluctuations in level; fast responses to setpoint changes, and fast settling times after start-ups or disturbances. Testwork has shown that the improvements in level stabilisation translate into improvements in recovery and grades.IntroductionProcess control and optimization have an important influence on the economic efficiency of flotation plants. Inefficient operation can allow the wrong balance between grades and recoveries, and can also lead to adverse shifts in the grade-recovery relationship. Of all metallurgical operations, flotation loses the largest proportion of valuable material. Better operation can reduce these losses.An essential requirement of a good controller is that it should be able to stabilize and regulate the plant. Stable operation allows the performance of the plant to be observed without being obscured by the effects of disturbances and fluctuations. The optimum conditions can then be detected more easily. Good regulation can maintain operation at the optimum with proper neutralization of disturbances. Only when good stabilization and regulation are achieved can an optimizing strategy be properly applied.Froth depth, aeration rate and reagent addition are the three means by which a flotation plant is generally controlled. These control actions are effective on different time scales. Reagent addition is slower in its effect as some conditioning time is required. Since reagents are only added at the head of the circuit and at a few selected points within the banks, time is required for the effect of reagent changes to move through the circuit. Because of this slower time constant, reagent addition is more suited to process optimization and to dealing with slower changes in the process. An example of these slower changes is variation in the feed."

The operations management system at Olympic Dam has evolved over a two-year period to the state described in this paper. This evolution has been driven largely by the requirements of the recent expansion of the Olympic Dam operation from three to nine million tonnes of ore per year. Such a change process demands an holistic approach to mine management and several techniques have been employed including XPAC, Mine Works Planner as well as a basic philosophy of æjust-in-timeÆ completion. The philosophies, software and tracking mechanisms for managing a large tonnage operation are described, outlining a fully integrated scheduling system from shift to shift detailed activity planning to a 20 year production plan. Moreover, the vision of production exceeding the current limit of nine million tonnes means that there are to be further developments to this state-of-the-art system in use at the Olympic Dam mine.

Thermal, mechanical, and physical properties of virgin and heat-treated Pittsburgh seam coal were determined as part of a comprehensive study of combustion of monolithic coal block. The information was sought to help characterize pyrolysis and combustion processes in underground coal mine fires but should also prove useful in the study of in situ and surface coal gasifiers. Measured properties include thermal conductivity, specific heat, thermal expansion, density, compressive and tensile strength, porosity, and permeability. The transport property data were obtained (when feasible) in two mutually perpendicular directions of the anisotropic virgin coal material, and coal samples carbonized for 5 hours at temperatures of 350° C, 475° C, 500° C, 650° C, and 850° C. Other coals (Pocahontas No. 3, Sewell, and Illinois No. 6 seams) were investigated for porosity and relative permeability. Interdependence among all properties was evident from the results; however, only a few correlations could be developed owing to inhomogeneity of coal material and specimen variation, which had the effect of reducing the accuracy of measurement and increasing data scatter.

"The extremely low permeability of the water-carrying beds in the nevonian formation of the potash district of Saskatchewan does not permit the injection of cement or chemicals to seal off sufficient water from the shafts to guarantee the safety of the mine. Based on many years of experience with wet shafts in the German and French potash mining industry, Alwinsal Potash of Canada Ltd. decided to have their potash mine shaft near Lanigan, Sask., which was completed in September of 1967, lined by means of an absolutely watertight lining of combined concrete and steel-plate construction.This shaft lining, consisting of two steel shells of welded construction with concrete filled in between, has proved itself before in the German coal mining industry. It guarantees a permanently dry shaft. With this type of lining, time-robbing and very often abortive injections are superfluous and the regular repair and adjusting work as well as the corrosion of conveyances and ropes can be avoided. Above all, however, the danger of a water inrush into the shaft is abolished completely."

Forced-air cooling of cold-mold arc furnaces for melting zirconium and similar metals has been investigated and found to be practical from the stand-point of heat transfer. It is believed that this technique offers a significant reduction in explosion hazard from that inherent in water cooling, the current industrial practice. A copper crucible, with longitudinal, integral-type fins and with an outer jacket to confine the airstream, appears to be the best general design for air-cooled operation. Cutting the fins into short segments and bending the segments to produce a herringbone effect increased the airstream's turbulence and was found, on test, to increase the heat transfer up to 35 percent.
