This investigation was carried out with low grade Murgul-Cakmakkaya copper ore once used to be dumped away as waste material. Sulphide minerals in the ore sample observed are chalcopyrite, pyrite, sphalerite and to some extent molibdenite; quartz, calcite and dolomite are the gangue minerals. The ore sample assays 0.28% Cu, 2.94% Fe and 3.36% S. Mineralogical study of the ore sample showed that adequate liberation of chalcopyrite for flota-tion was achieved below 100 µm. In flotation tests Aerophine 3418-A was the collector employed, NaOH or Ca(OH)2were the pH modifiers. Deactivators used were sodium meta bi-sulphide, starch, dextrin and lime. MIBC was the frother used throughout the tests. Test results showed that starch alone was the most suitable depressant to give the optimum metal content and recovery val-ues. Activated charcoal was used to adsorb excess collector species in the flotation pulp during cleaning stages After two stages cleaning of the rougher concentrate using starch as the depressant a copper concentrate assaying 21.2% Cu was obtained with 79.5% recovery while the tailings contained 0.01% Cu and metal losses were about 3%

While in some cases it is vitally important to measure the virgin stress in rock prior to tunnelling there are a number of cases where such stress measurement is really not required. The concept of having to have a number to put in a numerical model representing a continuum is often quite inappropriate. This paper discusses the cases when virgin stress measurement is required and the most appropriate means to measure it. The techniques discussed cover all of the overcoring systems, hydrofracture and borehole breakout measurements. It also covers the use of rock surface stress measurement, which is easy to perform and should be used to check for changing stress conditions. Unfortunately this technique has been ignored in recent times because engineers are addicted to numerical models requiring far field stresses rather than measuring the real values that exist where they matter – at the tunnel wall. A case is presented in which the measurement of surface stress in a tunnel boring machine tunnel enabled the far field stress to be determined in what must be the world’s largest overcore.CITATION:Gray, I, 2014. Fine coal cleaning by froth flotation has become common practice in the U.S. with more than 80,000 tons treated in this way per day. In spite of this large tonnage, developments in the automatic control of coal flotation circuits have lagged significantly behind those for mineral systems. One reason such developments have been limited is that instruments have not been available for the on-line measurement of carbon or ash and another critical variables in coal slurries. A second reason is that the influence of the operating variables on coal flotation has not been completely understood. During the last few years some of the required instrumentation has been developed and an improved knowledge of the flotation process itself has occurred through mathematical modeling; as a result certain control strategies for coal flotation are beginning to emerge. This paper attempts to evaluate several control strategies using a detailed flotation dynamic simulator, DYNAFLOAT. After constructing a process matrix for the system of interest, promising alternatives for linking manipulated and controlled variables have been analyzed. In order to develop combined grade and recovery control strategies, the authors found it necessary to construct a grade/recovery map with the aid of the simulator to drive the system to known final, feasible grade/recovery operating conditions. Finally, an advanced strategy which uses an on-line model to identify disturbances and take control actions is proposed.

The steepness of the slopes of an open pit mine has a substantial influence on the financial return of the mine. The paper proposes a novel design methodology where overall steeper pitwalls are employed without compromising the safety of the mine. In current design practice pitwall profiles are often planar in crosssection and the profile in between ramps especially tend to be planar and defined by a constant inter-ramp angle. Sometimes rock layers exhibiting different strengths require the inclination of the profile to vary with depth, but the inclination across each layer is usually constant. Here instead, a new geotechnical software, OptimalSlope, is employed to determine optimal pitwall profiles of depth varying inclination. OptimalSlope seeks the solution of a mathematical optimization problem where the overall steepness of the pitwall, from crest to toe, is maximized for an assigned lithology, geotechnical properties and Factor of Safety (FoS). Bench geometries (bench height, face inclination, minimum berm width) are imposed in the optimization as constraints which bind the maximum local inclination of the sought optimal profile together with any other constraints such as geological discontinuities that may influence slope failure. The obtained optimal profiles are always steeper than their planar counterparts (i.e. the planar profiles exhibiting the same FoS) up to 8 degrees depending on rock type and severity of constraints on local inclinations. The design of a copper mine is first carried out employing planar pitwalls, secondly adopting the optimal pitwall profiles determined by OptimalSlope. The adoption of optimal slope profiles leads to a 34% higher net present value and reductions of carbon footprint and energy consumption of 0.17 Mt CO2 eq and 82.5 million MJ respectively due to a 15% reduction of rockwaste volume.

The ability of computers to create synthetic representations of the real world in virtual reality offers a number of opportunities to enhance training methods used in the mining industry. Unfortunately, the training effectiveness of virtual reality systems currently used in the mining industry has received only limited testing. Miner Simulation (MinerSIM), an augmented reality system with integrated hypermedia suitable for training underground miners in the basics of using a jackleg drill to install rock bolts in a virtual mine environment is in its evaluation process at the University of Missouri-Rolla Experimental Mine. This paper discusses evaluation methodologies of the MinerSIM system, which consists of experimental and control groups with control students learning via traditional lecture and text formats. Preliminary results from usability tests of the first part of MinerSim, which is an online tutorial on underground rock bolting, are presented.

THE great event in American affairs was the sudden death of President Harding, on Aug. 2, in San Francisco. A few hours later Vice-Presi¬ dent Coolidge took the oath of office while in his father's farmhouse in Vermont and forthwith proceeded to Washington as the 30th president of the United States. The French and Belgian governments' replied to the British refusing the proposed discussion of the German offer and declaring that they would pursue their policy in the Ruhr until the German government abandoned its resistance and surrendered unconditionally. The economic collapse of Germany .appears to be nigh. Chancellor Cuno and his cabinet resigned the govern-ment of Germany on August 12, and Gustav Strese-mann, head of the People's party, accepted the task of forming a four-party coalition government. Coinci-dentally, there were food riots throughout Germany, and many persons were killed and wounded. The , National Assembly of the Turks at Angora ratified the Lausanne treaty, in the latter part of August, whereupon the retirement of the military forces of the Allies from Constantinople and the Straits began. Thus, Turkey was fully reinstated as a European power. The Greek government also ratified the Lausanne treaty and commenced to put its army on a peace basis. The number of unemployed persons in Great Britain is again increasing, which is causing much concern. The flood of crude oil and gasoline, which is severely taxing storage capacity, had its natural economic effect. Some small refiners were constrained to liqui-date in distress. The Governor of North Dakota, having acquired a supply of such cheap gasoline, insti-tuted a drastic cut in price, deliberately egging on the big refiners to do likewise. The Standard Oil Co. of Indiana accepted the challenge with enthusiasm, say-ing that it had always been its policy to sell as cheaply as any competitor. There was a humor in this situation which paved the way for the Standard to extinguish its small competitors and do by invitation of the State exactly what the muck-rakers had always charged as its greatest crime. The gasoline war spread to other states and reductions in price were made even on the seaboards. All of this was purely economic.

The 16-to-1 milling operation is Sunshine Mining Company's first new silver and gold producing facility. The 16-to-1 underground mine and mill are located approximately 64 km (40 miles) southwest of Tonopah, Nevada. Ore re- serves in the epithermal vein deposit are estimated at 0.91 Mt (one million st) of ore, at an average silver grade of 206 to 240 g/t (6 to 7 oz/st) and an average gold grade of 1.2 g/t (0.035 oz/st). The underground mine uses a large diameter blasthole stoping system of mining using highly mechanized rubber-tired equipment. The mill uses conventional cyanide leaching with countercurrent decantation and Merrill-Crowe precipitation. The mill start-up was in February 1982 resulting in the first pour of dore' in March 1982. The mill's present annual production is approximately 31.1 t (1.0 million oz) of silver and 264 kg (8500 oz) of gold.

Large metallurgical complexes are substantial users of energy, water and assets. To improve the effectiveness of energy and assets the quality of the data and events become paramount for real-time operational management. A lack of resources at the local operations and at the enterprise makes it impossible to process the sea of information and many projects have failed. As such, a novel approach for implementation of continuous improvements at the local level and innovations at the strategic level was implemented at all operating plants at Anglo American Platinum. Sixteen concentrators, three smelters and two refinery process systems were integrated to scale the information for manufacturing services at the local and enterprise level. The new capability of an enterprise real-time monitoring and diagnosis software infrastructure was available to implement many business strategies in tandem. Mineral and metallurgical processing knowledge is used to simplify the implementation of the data model. As such, asset monitoring, energy, production and process control management were implemented in an integrated approach reusing the same data but with different context and time horizons to have a standard methodology for local root cause analysis. This paper will highlight a sustainability management approach to change and empower the local and strategic team to collaborate using a new approach for adaptive reporting and condition-based event management and notifications. The results based on the integrated and collaborative team efforts will be presented. NO FEATURE of the annual meeting is considered more important at Institute headquarters than the assembly of delegates from the various local sections and divisions. There the president of the Institute and other officials may learn at first hand what the members are thinking and doing in every part of the country, and the delegates, in turn, may find that head- quarters is not a group of more or less cold-blooded New Yorkers whose primary function is to send out annual bills for $15. This year, the section and division delegates required three sessions to thresh out the matters of common interest: Monday morning and afternoon and Thursday afternoon. They were also guests of the Institute at the Directors' dinner on Tuesday night, and at the Directors' meeting afterward.

In the search for the development of more "environmentally friendly" and more intensive waste disposal approaches to meet more and more stringent environmental regulations, thermal plasma-based processes? are considered one of the most promising alternatives to well-established technologies such as incineration. This paper presents an overview on the research and development status of thermal plasma-based waste remediation technologies. The properties of thermal plasma are described. Due to its unique feature of high-energy intensity and super high temperature, thermal plasma is particularly capable of destroying organic-containing wastes. Its potential and promising application to waste remediation may include: treatment of incinerator ashes; metallurgical dusts (especially, electric arc furnace dust); medical wastes; radioactive wastes; and other Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) listed hazardous wastes. Many research institutes and vendors have been involved in the development of thermal plasma-based waste treatment-technology encouraged by the cleanup programs supported by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Department of Energy (DoE) and the Department of Defense (000). More recently, thermal plasma-based waste treatment technologies (sometimes called plasma-enhanced pyrolysis) are focused more and more on not only just destroying organic wastes but also on how to practically, and economically recover energy contained in the organic waste materials in addition to the recovery of metals in order to offset the high operating costs.

This paper provides a simple guiding framework for grinding circuit optimisation, focussing on common themes in past optimisation success stories, the conditions for success and techniques that can be employed to identify and define opportunities. Many significant grinding circuit improvements have been reported for operating plants, based on recurring themes such as the optimisation of mill feed size, mill liner design, process control, critical size, grinding media and classification. This summary of State laws on explosives was compiled primarily to ascertain what subjects relating to their control have been acted upon by each State legislature and, in general, how they have been treated. It does not include any legislation passed after 1942, or any proclamations, regulations, or administrative orders. It does not purport or attempt to be authoritative. If any problem arises involving interpretation of the statutes of any particular State, the original source must be consulted for the exact words used by the legislature. This summary, however, will be useful in determining whether relevant statutes exist, and in locating them quickly with a minimum of effort. It will be of value also in comparing statutes in one State with similar statutes in other States to determine what construction has been placed upon them by the courts of these jurisdictions or to contrast the varying provisions of many States upon a similar subject. To make these comparisons easier, the statutory provisions for each State have been grouped under several major topics in outline form. Although this sometimes has resulted in disruption of the continuity of individual acts, the increased general clarity and availability of comparable sections have more than justified the procedure followed.

Throughout the minerals industry, it is evident that a new wave of technological innovation is needed as the mining sector looks for ways to achieve higher security and safety as well as higher production rates with less investment. Innovation has always been one of the key factors in achieving success within the mining industry. However, its importance will be especially relevant in the coming years if negative trends in commodity prices and new challenges facing the industry (lower grades, deeper mines and economy of scales) are to be overcome and the future sustainability and profitability of the sector ensured.The drive towards fully autonomous operations has begun, with the implementation of automated systems in both surface and underground operations. However, these automated systems are currently planned and realised with well-defined automated tasks within structured environments and isolated spaces. Currently, there is no interaction between automated systems, manned systems or humans, which creates physically isolated environments.For fully autonomous and continuous operations, the automated systems need to operate in environments that enable flexible interactions between automated machines, tele- and manually operated machines and humans.In this paper, we address the automation paradigm considering the synergistic collaboration between humans and automated systems. In this paradigm, humans and machines would interact in a flexible, collaborative and synergistic way without the need for isolation. The implementation of this concept within mining operations will have to be underpinned by science and technological developments and will require adaptation from many fields, including robotics, automation, distributed systems, communication, human factors, pattern recognition and mine design.The paper also presents the research and development work being undertaken at the University of Chile’s Advanced Mining Technology Center, in collaboration with the Chilean mining industry. The productivity and fuel efficiency of iron-ore blast furnace operations has greatly increased in recent times. These improvements, particularly to the Japanese steel industry, have primarily arisen from process engineering studies of the blast furnace and associated operations such as sintering. The development of fluxed sinter based on iron-ore fines reacted to produce highly reducible, low slag sinters has contributed further to a reduction in fuel requirements. The Pilbara province of Western Australia is a significant source of these iron-ore fines supplied to the international market. Increasingly, this market is being offered high quality ores from other foreign sources. To technically assist companies in improving the processing efficiency of ores, and to improve the technical marketing of ores by modelling the processing characteristics of Australian/international ore blends, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) is actively assisting the industry by researching the general theme of 'iron ore from mine to metal in this paper we outline progress towards a numerical description of: a. ore deposit classification. b. Degradation during transport. c. Direct reduction of iron ore. d. Liquid bath ore reduction/smelting. e. Industrial sintering.

This paper attempts a survey of the principles involved in the combustion of blast-furnace gas in boilers and stoves. I do not expect to be able to give much information which is actually new, since the laws and methods of calculation pertaining to this problem are contained in a number of handbooks; but, so far as I am aware, they have nowhere been treated exclusively with reference to this one problem of gas economy. The road which I follow is less that of strictly scientific research than that of the practical engineer, faced by operation problems which require a quick solution by easily accessible means without a prolonged search in scientific handbooks. For this purpose I give a number of tables and diagrams, as well as the results of many years1 practical working experience as combustion engineer, which I trust will prove useful to my readers. HlSTORICAL Considering the tremendous efforts made during the last 15 years to increase the efficiency of all kinds of power plants, it is highly surprising that until a comparatively very recent period, progress in the economical combustion of blast-furnace gas has been so slow, The explanation generally put forth, that fuel has been so cheap that it was hardly worth while to bother about this economy, will not hold good, for the greatest trouble was taken to improve the combustion of coal and to reduce the consumption of steam, The most plausible explanation appears to be the general impression, held as an accepted fact, that gas, especially hot, uncleaned, blast-furnace gas, was not a good boiler fuel. Many managers of high repute had tried unsuccessfully to improve the conditions of its use, and the dictum went forth that efficiencies of over 60 per cent., particularly with high loads, were impossible. This was the situation not only in the United States, with very cheap fuel, but also in Europe, where fuel prices are twice and three times as high.

The effect of various zinc electrowinning solution impurities on the surface morphology of deposited zinc was investigated. Impurities studied included Al, Ag, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ge, Mn, Ni, Sb, Sn, Ti, Pb02, PbSO4, and HC1. Also, the effect of animal glue, gum arabic, and Na2SiO3 additives on the deposited zinc surface structure was studied. Results were compared with deposits from a pure electrolyte consisting of H2SO4 and Zn+2, 200 and 65 gpl, respectively. Zinc was deposited on a Al cathode, 99.9 pct pure, using Pt anodes. Time, temperature, current density, and impurity concentrations were con¬troller The bulk of the tests were conducted at 40° C and 75 A/ft2 (82 mA/cm2). A scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used to examine the surface morphology. X ray diffraction techniques were used to determine crystal orientation and nondispersive X-ray spectrometer analyses were employed in an attempt to locate impurity concentrations on the zinc deposit when pitting or re-solution occurred. The impurities were categorized by their effect on current efficiency, morphology, and apparent mechanism of H2 evolution from the cathode.

It has been said that good things come in threes. In the case of screening for mining and quarry operations, profit comes in three distinct phases: layered, basic and sharp screening. But how good they are ? whether they maximize efficiency and improve the potential for success ? depends on having the right screen media on the deck for each of the three phases. A relatively new method for achieving that goal is a blended screen media approach that incorporates the ideal screen media for each phase and the ideal mix of media for the process overall. The goal in implementing a blended solution is to find the optimal combination of open area and durability. If this combination is found, maximum product quality and profits will be realized by increasing efficiency of classification while minimizing downtime and maintenance costs.

Introduction An engineer is a builder and a problem solver. He uses knowledge of the properties of matter and energy to furnish the needs of society. Engineers form the bridge between scientific researchers and the general public, most of whom are technologically illiterate. Mining, metallurgical, and petroleum engineers extract minerals from the ground and process them into usable forms. Then, other engineers further process them into society's needs. Minerals engineers deal with more uncertainty than other engineers. Each ore deposit has its own personality and each ore is metallurgically unique. Minerals engineers, therefore, must be flexible, often applying larger safety factors and contingencies than other engineers, and frequently functioning as a jack of all trades. A minerals engineer can work in coal, oil, oil shale, base metals, ferrous metals, precious metals, industrial minerals, strategic minerals, or in exploration. Other mining jobs include banking and financing, education and research, marketing and sales, and government. As a minerals engineer, you may be among the first to work on the ocean floor or the moon. College Preparation A difference between college and industry is the type of problems to be solved. A typical college problem has an exact answer derived from given information. An industry problem is more apt to have a solution chosen from a number of alternatives. Information required for the solution is not given. It must be measured, calculated, looked-up, estimated, or otherwise derived. Solutions involve trade-offs, economics, and human factors, as well as application of physical laws and theory. When a college problem is answered, you move on to the next one. In industry, however, the headaches may just be starting with the implementation of the solution. Students often complain that they see little use for the theory they are learning. This is valid. A good professor will link theory and practice. Another difference between college and industry is the price of failure. In college, you can make a half-hearted effort in an assignment and take your C or D. On the job, however, poor engineering results in potentially effective projects being rejected and unsound projects being undertaken. Poor performance results in cost overruns, schedule holdups, oversights, disgruntled employees, irate bosses, unsafe structures, and unreliable systems. The costs are time, money, and possibly lives. The student pays the university for his work - not the other way around. So the rewards for good schoolwork often seem nebulous. But education must be viewed as an investment. Working for good grades will help you think better, learn more, receive better job offers, and perform more effectively on the job. There is no substitute for hard work. Avoid taking the easiest electives. If you desire a more liberal education or dislike rigorous physical sciences, mathematics, or engineering courses, change majors. Remember, you are training to be an engineer, not a computer programmer or market analyst. At least one summer of industry employment is necessary for minerals engineering students. The sooner you gain actual experience, the sooner you will know whether to change majors. Most large companies hire students during summer. It is best to send out applications around Christmas break. First and second year students usually work as laborers. Upper-classmen may work as engineering technicians. Students must sometimes choose between returning to a company at a higher position or trying a different company at a lower position, for more varied experience. Both alternatives have advantages. Do your best on these summer jobs. The company is watching. If you do well, the chances are good you will get a job offer when you graduate. Good references are important when you begin job hunting. Interviewing occurs near the end of your school career. The standard procedure is to send your resume with a cover letter to each company you are interested in. The resume for a graduating engineer with little experience need not exceed one page. The cover letter must be written for the individual company.

The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM) is a professional society for all those associated with the activities of the mineral industry. Differences of opinion exist within the membership of the AusIMM on the role it should play in the future as a professional society in a changing industry and world environment. This same dilemma is concerning other professional societies of which the author is a member. Some of the activities and priorities of the AusIMM are reviewed in order to clarify a frequently expressed opinion that it identifies with and supports industry at the expense of representing the interests of its individual members. By definition and by action this is certainly not the case and it is concluded that all activities whether seen to be industry or member orientated serve to benefit both. The AusIMM plays a most important role in integrating and promoting the interests of all sections of the mineral industry whether corporate or individual and the Presidential activities in education this year provide an excellent example of this.
