This paper addresses some of the financial risk hedging mechanisms available to a corporation contemplating entering the mining business at a significant level of investment. The approach which I have adopted is that of a case study relating to the risk hedging aspects of Brascan Limited's acquisition of 46% of Noranda Inc., formerly Noranda Mines Limited, followed by some remarks on options open to mining companies for reducing financial risks. To appreciate the rationale for Brascan committing over (Can.) $800 million to the natural resource sector, some knowledge of Brascan's parent company, Edper Investments Ltd., is required at the outset. Edper Investments, prior to acquiring a 48% interest in Brascan, controlled Trizec Corporation, one of the world's largest property companies. Edper also was involved in the financial services sector through Continental Bank of Canada and Hees International Corporation. For some considerable time prior to Edper's investment in Brascan, Edper felt a need to provide a better balance to its portfolio of property and financial services. Brascan was rich in cash, relatively unleveraged, and with important existing holdings in natural resources and consumer products. The acquisition of a controlling interest in Brascan provided an opportunity to balance Edper's portfolio of property and financial services with world class acquisitions in natural resources, supplemented by consumer products and financial services. The end result of Brascan's activities over the last few years is illustrated by the following analysis of the book value of Brascan's assets at the end of December 1983. The large emphasis on natural resources came about from the fact that for Canadians operating mainly in Canada, natural resources were attractive. In addition, the quality of Canada's reserves looked good to us. The polymetallic nature of many of Canada's orebodies offered a hedge against risk relating to any one metal. Put another way, the by-product metal credits offered a net operating cost advantage with respect to many of the metals mined. Our energy costs also appeared to provide Canada's natural resource industries with an advantage. We considered Canadian mining expertise as amongst the world's finest, as were the exploration equipment and technology developed in Canada. In addition, Canada offered a stable political climate and one we knew. Further, we felt the Canadian Government's future role in the industry would, on balance, be benign, partly because the Canadian content of the mining industry was very high in contrast to the petroleum industry. Granted, we could find cheaper sources of copper; however, to do so would involve venturing into regions where country risks were higher.

Many of the so-called minor metals are derived as byproducts from the processing of lead and zinc concentrates in which they occur as minor constituents. Concentrates from some lead-zinc mineral deposits are more enriched in metals such as cadmium, arsenic, bismuth, silver, and selenium than are others, and these sources offer a continuing, assured supply of certain of these metals. Despite the age of the data collected, the Bureau of Mines feels it to be highly desirable to publish due to its relevance to the objective of the study which was to ascertain the flow of minor metals from certain smelter feeds Efforts to trace these metals through the complicated lead and zinc processing steps included trying to ascertain losses and mode of loss of these metals. Losses of some metals in processing may be surmised as occurring in gaseous and other emissions, or possibly in slags and residues.

Since the promulgation of the first Federal Asbestos Standard by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration in 1972, other federal agencies have modified the standard to better carry on their own unique missions. The instruments used to identify and measure asbestos, the sampling protocol, and the criteria used to define asbestos, have been modified to some degree. The Mine Safety and Health Administration regulates and controls asbestos dust in the mining and mineral commodity industries. However, crushed stone and processed ores contain mineral fragments that are frequently difficult to distinguish from asbestos. Mineral nomenclature, instruments for particle analysis, and sampling strategy must be accommodated to some degree to make asbestos control workable and meaningful. Precedent in other agencies has made consideration of these changes possible. Newly identified amphibole asbestos minerals have further complicated the agency?s regulatory charge. Changes in its Asbestos Standard are now being considered. Crushed taconite ore in the Eastern Mesabi highlights many of these issues. ©2008 Published by Elsevier Inc. DELICATE PLANTS are now put to bed for the winter under glass-wool or rock-wool blankets. Thus arise new and unexpected uses for non-metallic materials and rocks and, at the same time, certain unique uses are fading out; for instance, the Italians have taken steps to bar the use of salt for money in Ethiopia. Novel sources of supply find a place in the record of recent achievements as exemplified in the migration of the frontiers of industrial mineral exploitation beyond the land area of the earth to include the ocean. Salt, of course, has been recovered from the sea for years but the treatment of enormous quantities of sea water for bromine has lately added to the importance of the ocean as a reservoir of mineral wealth. Increased use of non-metallic minerals in the commercial and economic life of the country is reflected in the wide scope and activity of the Industrial Minerals Division of the Institute. The outstanding recent achievement of the Division is the publication of a 955-page volume on industrial minerals and rocks, comprising 48 commodity chapters each written by an authority on the subject.

Samples were taken of industrial mineral waste materials which are potentially capable of being used for filling underground coal mines for subsidence control in the Pittsburgh and the Scranton-Wilkes Barre areas of Pennsylvania. The samples were subjected to potentially relevant standard tests which are commonly used 1n the evaluation of soil materials and mineral "aggregate materials. Measurements of plasticity, liquid limit, and gradations, particularly in the -200 mesh size range, indicated a comparative lack of clay minerals. Cementitious reactions between sources of alkali, such as calcium hydroxide or portland cement stack dust, and of silica, such as clay or fly ash, were found to occur in various mixes of high-bulk materials. Strengths of up to about 400 psi at 84 days were observed. The possibility of emplacement of high-bulk material by both turbid flow (or density currents) below water and by mud flows above water were considered and both appear to be reasonable and possibly simpler than the current mechanisms of emplacement.

Introduction It is the purpose of this paper to review the subject of roasting as preparation of refractory gold ores and concentrates for cyanidation, with particular reference to operations at the mill of Beattie Gold Mines (Que.), Ltd., Duparquet, Quebec. Two earlier papers relating to the Beattie roasting operations are cited as background to the ? present discussion, and more general reference is made to other publications relating? to geology and metallurgy at Beattie. The Beattie roasting plant was built in 1937 as an addition to the existing flotation and cyanidation plant to permit complete processing of the ore at the mine property. Previously, the flotation concentrate had been cyanided, yielding 70 per cent of the gold values, followed by re-flotation of a concentrate from the cyanide residue. This re-floated residue was shipped to a smelter for recovery of gold values unavailable from direct cyanidation. The roasting plant itself is of interest through application in its design of multiple-hearth roasters and a Cottrell plant for separate recovery of dust and arsenic. In the laboratory and plant studies that accompanied development of the plant into a dependable and efficient working unit have been found principles and ideas applicable to other roasting 'problems. Before enlarging on these aspects relating particularly to the Beattie problems and plant, brief consideration is given to roasting in general.

In the current operational facility, due to the absence of pellet pot facility, a novel technique is developed wherein the pellets with different chemistries prepared in the laboratory are fired in an induration machine by placing them inside the Inconel baskets. In the present work, an attempt is made to optimize the pellet chemistry by developing 2 different flux pellets, viz., low basicity (B2: CaO/ SiO2 = 0.3) pellets and high basicity (B2 = 0.9) pellets, and further the effects of basicity on pellet properties, viz., cold compressive strength, porosity, swelling index, reducibility index, and softening and melting temperature, are studied. It has been found through the multiple operational trials that increasing the basicity of pellets from 0.3 to 0.9 results into improving the pellet strength, reducibility and softening and melting characteristics. Moreover, it is observed that the swelling index of pellets is reduced by adding 2% MgO to both low and high basicity pellets that could be attributed to the formation of high melting point slag in pellets. The operational trial has resulted into producing pellets that exhibit a combination of desired mechanical strength, improved swelling, and reducibility index and possess better softening–melting behavior among all the chemistries studied.

Chromite has been produced commercially for slightly more than a century. Developed, at one time, chiefly as a chemical pigment raw material, it has subsequently found extensive application in other chemical industries - as a refractory material for furnace linings and as the sole source of the metal chromium. For some years prior to 1914, its use as a refractory predominated; but post-war development in alloy steels, principally stainless steels, enhanced the metallurgical demand in the form of ferrochrome with a consequent increase in the demand for chromite. More recently direct reduction of chromite in alloy-steel manufacture has been applied to a limited extent. Alloy steels containing varying amounts of chromium, with or without other alloying elements, now find extensive use in a ride variety of ways - in structural material, machines, industrial equipment transportation by land, sea, and air, sanitary equipment, food preservation, and a multitude of other uses. Separation of the slightly soluble minerals (Ksp? 10-10), one from the other is one of the more difficult tasks confronting flotation engineers. This study has focused on means of separating such prominent members of this class as scheelite, fluorite and calcite from one another. Some experimental work has also been done on the minerals magnesite, dolomite and apatite. Carboxylic acid-type collectors are commonly used industrially to float all of these minerals. Thus, the problem at hand is to ascertain means of achieving selectivity between minerals known to respond rather similarly in flotation. Four techniques have been proposed for the separation of minerals of this class from each other: 1. Control of potential determining ions 2. Use of stereo-specific collectors 3. Use of flotation rate differences 4. Use of selective activating and depressing compounds. This study was directed toward a cursory evaluation of each of these techniques, and each was found to be a possible method of achieving selectivity. Stereo-specific collectors -- those whose parking area may closely match the available adsorption site on one mineral but not on another -- are a possible means of achieving selectivity between scheelite, fluorite and calcite. Stereo-hindered carboxylic acid salts and sulfonates all show selectivity between the three minerals tested. Separations also appear to be possible by the controlled use of the lattice ions (e.g., Ca and [W0=4] for scheelite, CaW04), H+, [OH-, C0-3 and HCO=3]; all of them ostensibly potential determining in the systems studied. Flotation rate differences of the minerals as a function of pH under conditions of starvation collector usage also showed promise. Scheelite and fluorite float most rapidly with sodium oleate in slightly acidic (pH 4-7) solutions whereas calcite floats most rapidly near pH 10. Use of Mn++, Pb++, or other heavy metal hydroxy complexes as activators was seen to effect each of the slightly soluble minerals differently. This is in sharp contrast to the oxygen containing, relatively insoluble minerals, where all minerals respond in a similar manner to such activation procedures. Results indicate that all four methods outlined above may potentially be used to achieve flotation separation of the slightly soluble minerals. More extensive research should be undertaken to detail the spcific applicability of each of the procedures and to make a more complete evaluation of the effect of collector type and concentration, mineral type, pH and size effects.

The goal of this work was to select an appropriate electrode for dummy load of diesel engine in fully salt-water in the DESA factory. The electrochemical corrosion rate of general structural steel, commercial pure aluminum and cathode copper calculated as weighting, volumetric and commercial in fully salt-water by city power. After several tests and then applying the fuzzy logic method, it was determined that general structural steel is the best selection for this purpose.

"Geometallurgy aims to improve resource efficiency by creating a spatial model of an orebody in order to forecast ore processing behaviour. This enables calculation of the economic value of each ore block and the use of this information for production optimisation and hence an improved economic return. Modelling uses different approaches to link geological information with mineral processing: traditional approach uses chemical elements; proxy approach – small-scale geometallurgical tests; and mineralogical approach – minerals.A geometallurgical model is obtained during execution of a geometallurgical program encompassing the entire value chain of ore processing. Available methods for establishing a geometallurgical model are in many cases limited and not yet comprehensively validated. Some of the limitations include: sampling density, assaying methods and quality, forecast accuracy block model content, geostatistical solutions for non-additive components, blending and assessment of positive impact of geometallurgy on the project. Synthetic ore models combined with process simulations and production scheduling, based on strong case studies, present a viable way to address these shortcomings. Such synthetic ore models will have realistic elemental and mineral distribution, textural attributes and 3D variability for input into the design of an appropriate geometallurgical program.A synthetic orebody was created for an apatite-bearing iron deposit. Variability in modal mineralogy was described by geostatistical parameters combined by a set of linear and trigonometric functions. The generated synthetic deposit model was used to develop a mine production plan to generate a simulated process feed. The process feed had detailed information required for beneficiation process simulation: modal mineralogy, chemical composition of minerals, grain size and specific gravity. The synthetic system was used to measure benefits that a geometallurgical program developed for real cases could provide, compared to production where only head grade is optimised. ILZRO sights are locked securely on the targets of the expanded applications and ever-improving quality in the major market for zinc-coated steel. A wide range of ILZRO-sponsored research projects examine issues of formability, paintability, and corrosion resistance for traditional hot-dip galvanising, electrogalvanising, and ILZRO's own proprietary zinc coating, Galfan. Recent research has focussed on the on the interaction between Galfan and different substrate steels to determine optimum combinations for different applications. ILZRO enjoys an evolving role in providing the connection between research laboratories and marketing divisions through supporting research and services for the Galfan Technical Resource Centreò(GTRC) and the recently formed North American Galfan Development Authority (NAGDA). GTRC has just produced a new problem-solving manual that provides a comprehensive source of hands-on solutions for the many Galfan licensees throughout the world, and should contribute substantially to the reputation of Galfan as a consistently top-quality steel-coating product. Meanwhile, NAGDA is advancing the market with new advertising for Galfan based on superior corrosion-resistant qualities proven through ILZRO-sponsored research. Practical manufacturing issues remain at the forefront of ILZRO priorities, with research emphasis on cutting and welding zinc-coated steel to provide direct assistance towards improved product quality and a more secure market. Moving to the arena of die casting, when the specifier looks to zinc to fill a design need, ILZRO-sponsored research projects provide comprehensive documentation on metallurgical characteristics for every zinc alloy under almost any imaginable application. On-going ILZRO-sponsored research is integrating this wealth of data with sophisticated computer programs that model die-casting designs with ever-increasing accuracy, as other ILZRO projects lay the market groundwork for zinc in applications ranging from vibration damping to electromagnetic shielding.

As a Rock Mechanics investigator, the author has, Over his career, attempted to use his best knowledge in developing better rock control fixtures. Based on the experience of nine years of development of friction rock stabilizers, in 1980 he decided to launch a new investigation to develop a unique roof support fixture which would fit the coal mining market. The largest single user of roof bolts in the world is the American coal mining industry, historically using up to 100 million fixtures per year. In 1989 they used approximately 82 million fixtures.

Since our firm was established by Mr. Price in 1937, we have followed an investment philosophy which is based on the belief that investment in growth stocks is the most assured way of achieving superior, long term investment accomplishment. There are many criteria that we use to select growth companies but the most important is a combination of superior management operating in an industry with above average growth potential. This growth stock approach is the cornerstone of our investment strategy for two of the three mutual funds sponsored by the Price organization and for our private clients. However, during the past 5 years we have seen inflation accelerate due to a variety of factors including the inability of our government to meet seemingly unlimited needs with limited revenue sources. While there might be temporary periods of price stability, we believe that inflation will still continue to be the investor's greatest problem in future years. Our conviction that inflation would increase combined with the acceleration of inflation in the late 1960s stimulated an intensive investment research effort, on our part, to identify those companies with strong natural resource bases -- who own or control large, secure, and low cost tangible assets. Over the longer term and in an environment of a depreciating dollar some of these firms should be able to develop and sell these assets at higher prices. While we still believe that investing in growth companies is a sound investment strategy to offset inflation, we also believe that certain natural resource companies will show well above average investment performance. In the newest Price mutual fund, The Rowe Price New Era Fund, we have, as a matter of policy, placed a large portion of the portfolio in natural resource companies.

The Mineral Deposits Service of the Quebec Department of Natural Resources is engaged in the preparation of metallogenic maps as a contribution to the Canadian Sub-Committee of the Metallogenic Map of North America. The preliminary work is being done on large-scale maps. The main objective is to clearly represent information on ore deposits in a suggestive way. The design of the legend to meet these requirements is discussed. As these maps are still only descriptive, a further step will be the interpretation of data into metallogenic maps with Jess emphasis on the individual deposits and more on the metallogenic factors. Both types of map should prove useful in the search for ore deposits; the first by providing at once a large amount of information, the second by suggesting the ore controls.

This paper investigates the problems that are encountered in mining at extreme depths. It looks into the rock mechanic aspects, especially the high stress levels that will occur, and the hazard of rockbursts. Furthermore, environmental problems are discussed, with refrigeration and reduction of neat loads being major methods of maintaining ,sorkable conditions. The paper concludes that it will be of tmost importance to have a planning team of Tne highest quality to ensure that conditions are maintained so that work can be carried out safely and under reasonable conditions.

"A section of a London Underground expanded segmental lined tunnel constructed in the 1970’s progressively deteriorated after 2001, with extensive radial joint spalling and mid-segment cracking. As part of the PPP contract Tube Lines Ltd and their partners carried out various analyses of the tunnel, including analysis of laser scans of the tunnel, geotechnical testing through the tunnel walls, geotechnical desk studies, real-time monitoring and even full-scale segment testing. This paper discusses the behaviour of the tunnel lining in this setting, the causes of failure and the lessons that can be learnt from this rare example of a tunnel which was progressively failing in service. It is finally noted that a replacement tunnel lining was installed during night-time possessions and completed in 2015. INTRODUCTION In 2003, Tube Lines Ltd. was established under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) scheme to provide maintenance services and upgrade projects for London Underground (LU). The Deep Tube Tunnel Knowledge and Inspection Programme comprised the assessment of all tunnels, shafts and other underground structures. This included a number of lengths of tunnel constructed using segmental concrete linings. First used by LU in the 1960s, the savings both in cost and speed of construction led to concrete linings replacing cast iron for new tunnel construction in all but a few cases. During the initial scoping phase of this programme, inspections identified potential issues with the expanded concrete segmental linings on the Jubilee line. The inspections found a number of segments with surface spalling (Figure 1a), which did not appear on the post-construction defect records. These were generally relatively shallow, up to 40mm deep, spread over a wide area of segment. These were different to spalls caused by handling damage, which are typically localised at segment corners. Subsequent inspections over the following years identified an increasing number of segments with these types of spalls as well as an increased incidence of longitudinal mid-segment cracking (Figure 1b). The increasing occurrence of these defects was hypothesised to be caused by tensile stresses developing in the vicinity of the joint."
