Sustainable development requires the optimal use of natural resources and recycling of the wastes. In fact recycling is the final productive use of obsoletes. ELVs, obsolete appliances and industrial wastes have become important resources for production of iron and steels, non-ferrous metals, and composites. Within shredding plants, these obsoletes are firstly shredded to the pieces and then processed to recycle different materials, especially ferrous and non-ferrous metals for metallurgy. Traditional and new developed mineral processing technologies are nowadays used for recycling different materials from waste effluents. Shredding and separating plants are currently recycle the wastes by make use of different technologies to mainly produce raw material for metallurgical application. However, other non-ferrous components are also treated for energy conservation and protecting environment. Currently, recovery in shredding and recycling plants maximises to 75% and about 25% of the feed is land-filled. However, recycling rate must be increased in due to the economical, environ-mental and social concerns. A comprehensive study for recycling, with especial focus on ferrous metal recovery, was sup-ported by Swedish Environmental Agency (MISTRA) to look at possibilities to increase the recycling rate and to reduce the amount of disposal. Part of this study was dedicated to study the shred-ding plant facilities and to look for possibilities to improve the quality and quantity of the shredding product streams. The aims were to improve the quality of ferrous scrap (apparent density > 0.9 and Cu<0.25%) for iron and steel production as well as having better quality for non-ferrous metals through the recycling schema, and finally to treat the shredder residue (SR) to recover metals and plastics to reduce the disposals. This paper summarises the results of sampling and conducting separation tests for improving the recovery of the ferrous and non-ferrous metals. The results indicated to be possible to obtain high quality ferrous scrap at recovery of 88%. However, the total recovery for metal scrap has reached 93%. Furthermore, test results on fine, P< 8mm, shredding residue (SR) showed promising prospect in recovery of metals and protecting environment by physical separation, i.e. electrical separation technique.

Using three-dimensional (3-0) graphics computing to evaluate new technologies for computer-assisted mining systems illustrates how these visual techniques can redefine the way researchers look at raw scientific data. The U.S. Bureau of Mines is using 3-D graphics computing to obtain cheaply, easily, and quickly information about the operation and design of current and proposed mechanical coal and metal-nonmetal mining systems. Bureau engineers developed a graphics simulator for a continuous miner that enables a realistic test for experimental software that controls the functions of a machine. Some of the specific simulated functions of the continuous miner are machine motion, appendage motion, machine position, and machine sensors. The simulator uses data files generated in the laboratory or mine using a computer-assisted mining machine. The data file contains information from a laser-based guidance system and a data acquisition system that records all control commands given to a computer-assisted mining machine. This report documents the first phase in developing the simulator and discusses simulator requirements, features of the initial simulator, and several examples of its application. During this endeavor, Bureau engineers discovered and appreciated the simulator&apos;s potential to assist their investigations of machine controls and navigation systems.

This paper describes the location, features, qualities, extent, and potential of iron occurrences and some associative resources -limestone and dolomite, coal, petroleum and natural gas, power, and water - in New Mexico. Reconnaissance investigations were made of 118 iron occurrences to deter-mine their extent, attitude, and potential; character samples were analyzed to determine their quality and impurities; and pioneer metallurgical investigations were made on character samples to present their metallurgical problems. Some factors influencing past and potential iron markets are discussed. The most abundant iron minerals are magnetite and hematite. The higher grade deposits are extensive contact-metamorphic and pyrometasomatic replacements in calcareous Paleozoic rocks associated with intrusives. Low-grade deposits of considerable potential are the extensive Cambrian oolitic hematites of sedimentary origin and the Precambrian magnetite-hematite taconite iron formation. Iron occurs also as extensive colluvial and alluvial concentrations. A wide variety of accessory elements are indicated and these pose metallurgical and economic problems.

Mr. Chairman, members of SME, and guests It is indeed a pleasure to have the opportunity to appear before this group. The topic of this paper is, "Current Trends in Related Industries and Their Influence on Electric Shovel Design and Size". Before getting into the major items, it is well to point out that this text will deal with loading shovels primarily, since their application is almost universal in major open pit mining operations throughout the world. Related industries influence our design in many ways. For the sake of simplicity, these industries will be broken down into two major categories. The first category to be discussed will include industries that will indirectly influence design and size, while the second category will include industries whose products can directly be incorporated by the engineer in the design of shovels.

Iron and steel production is responsible for approximately 6.3 per cent of global anthropogenic CO2 emissions. Direct reduction of iron with hydrogen is a potential route for decarbonising the iron and steel industry. Extensive small-scale laboratory experiments have been performed to test the feasibility of hydrogen-direct reduction of iron ores sourced from diverse geographical locations. However, test results from the batch reduction of small-sample do not necessarily translate to continuous commercial-scale processes. Establishing a small-scale continuous test reactor for H2- DRI process is challenging, requiring substantial resources and investment. The limited availability of small-scale reactors that enable testing under relevant conditions has become a major obstacle for H2-DRI development, leaving a big gap between laboratory success and proof of commercial feasibility. Here, we report on the recent commissioning of a continuous counter-flow vertical shaft reactor, which has a processing capacity of 6 kg/hr iron ore pellets at up to 100 NL/min H2 flow. We believe this to currently be the largest H2-DRI facility in the Southern Hemisphere. In this talk, we will discuss the design and construction journey for this reactor, starting from the initial system design to the initial demonstration of H2 reduction of titanomagnetite ironsand pellets. This reactor now enables a range of research capacities, including the validation of laboratory results on a larger scale with practical operational variables, feasibility assessment of hydrogen direct reduction of different iron ores on a commercial scale; identification of scalability, sticking, and other potential issues before building a full-scale plant; and a viable solution for producing small-quantity DRIs for downstream melting investigations. Overall, this new research facility offers significant benefits for assisting the transformation of iron and steel production to a more sustainable and green industry.

THOSE acquainted with the fundamental differences between the, educational .systems of Great Britain and. the United States would hardly expect .the training of men for the petroleum industry to proceed along the same lines- in the two countries. The youth entering an English university is, except in the case of-the student from some of the British colonies or from foreign countries, almost invariably a product of the English "public school." This is in no sense comparable .with the American public school. It is a private institution, frequently of considerable age and heavily endowed. In many aspects it seems to be comparable with the American preparatory school. Yet to some extent its activities remind one of the first years of the undergraduate: course in the American college. Certainly it takes to-itself many of the social, functions of the American college.

Since March 28, domestic producer prices on 99.5 percent aluminum ingot have been at 5l¢ per pound. Dealers in this same time frame have held ingot quotes at 49¢-50.5¢ per pound. COBALT: Imports from southern Africa in 1976 constituted 73 percent of total cobalt imports. Moreover, the United States is 98 percent dependent on imports of cobalt. For this reason, the Bureau of Mines is closely monitoring developments abroad to ensure an advance notice of any possibility of a shortfall in supply. Included in these imports were those from Zaire (41 percent directly from Zaire and 15 percent via Belgium-Luxembourg), Zambia (11 percent), and Botswana (6 percent). Also being closely watched are industry stocks.

Tremendous strides have been made in front end loaders in the last fifteen years. Fifteen years ago a 2; cubic yard front end loader was the largest standard machine you could purchase. Today there are two commercially available 15 yard front end loaders and many 10 yard front end loaders. The estimated total worldwide market for all front end loaders over one cubic yard has increased to over 30,000 units yearly. The trend for front end loaders, in general, and for the mining market, in particular, is to larger and larger loaders. Today there are 18 cubic yard and a 24 cubic yard front end loader in prototype form. It is not inconceivable that within another fifteen years that there will be front end loaders in the 50 cubic yard class with design features quite different from today&apos;s. These larger loaders are being designed at the demand of the mining industry and the design criteria are being directed at this market area. The costs of these larger loaders will be greater per unit of capacity, and it is the intent of the various manufacturers that they will be more reliable, be easier to service, give greater availability, live longer, and cost less to maintain, than previous loaders. It is also the intent of the manufacturers to compete directly with the large mining shovel as the front end loaders become appropriately larger and more reliable. There has been some trend in this direction in the past with smaller shovels and loaders. In Figure No. 1 are data for U.S. production of front end loaders (5-6 cubic yard class and 10 cubic yard class) and U.S. production of cable operation, crawler mounted power shovels, draglines and cranes (1; to 5 cubic yard class) for the years 1965 and 1970. THE growing need of better methods for the recovery of zinc and other elements from complex sulfide ores has suggested an inquiry respecting a possible group separation of the elements by the aid of volatilization at more or less elevated temperatures. It &apos;is evident that if the zinc content of such ores can be completely separated, for instance, as pure oxide, by a volatilization &apos;method, there should be no difficulty in recovering the other elements by smelting and refining. Zinc burning" as applied to zinkiferous ores has advanced but little in practice since the invention of the wetherill grate-furnace process in 1852, as may be seen by reference to papers on the subject.&apos; In other words the thermochemical reaction employed in effecting the volatilization of the zinc is essentially one of reduction by means of carbon, whether the ores treated contain their zinc in an oxidized form, or as the sulfide. The zinc vapors, liberated from the ores at a temperature above that required for the reduction of ZnO by C (about ,1100° C.) or for the volatilization of ZnS per se, (about&apos; 1300°-1400° C.) are subsequently burned to ZnO or to ZnO + SOz, by contact with&apos; atmospheric ,oxygen in the upper or posterior parts of the furnace chamber, or in a so-called "combustion chamber" after leaving the .furnace proper.

An approach for predicting the development of mineral resources on public lands has been developed as an aid to resource agencies. It consists of new techniques for evaluating the economic potential of the resource, the uncertainty about mine cost estimates, and the uncertainty about the occurrance of mineral deposits. New mineral sup- plies from inferred and hypothetical resources can be predicted by using these techniques. A case study illustrates their application in predicting development of copper resources in western Montana.

Efficient design of grinding circuits for efficient production of ultrafine material requires rapid feedback of information concerning the fineness of material leaving the grinding device. Generating this information requires efficient sampling and adequate rapid characterization of the material leaving the grinding machinery. Recent developments-in electrooptic inspection of dry end wet material leaving a grinding device are critically reviewed. New methods for characterizing ultrafines are discussed. A rapid operating automated cybernetic (intelligent) permeability device for automatic control of grinding circuits using Blaine index and other fineness indices is described.

"The Iron Ore Company of Canada's Carol Lake Project is Located near the western boundary of Labrador, 960 air kilometers northeast of Montreal (Figure 1).The Concentrator operation was started in 1962 with a capacity to produce 7 million tonnes of concentrate per year. The bulk of the concentrate was pelletized at a 6 million tonnes per year pelletizing plant completed in 1963. The remaining concentrate was sold in the international market. The concentrator was first expanded in 1966 to 10 million tonnes per year capacity with the pellet plant also expanded in 1967 to match the increase in concentrate production. In 1973, the concentrator was further expanded to gear with the increase in concentrate sales. In 1977, more than 40 million tonnes of crude ore was processed to produce in excess of 17.4 million tonnes of concentrate and 10.4 million tonnes of pellets."

Cortez Gold Mines, the United States&apos; third largest primary producer of gold, commenced continuous operations on January 10, 1969. The decision to proceed to production was made in March of 1968 and construction of the mill and stripping operations for the pit began in April and July, respectively. Anomalous conditions on the slope of Mt. Tenabo along the Roberts Mountain thrust fault zone were discovered by the U.S.G.S. while conducting geochemical surveys in the old Cortez silver district. Following the discovery of gold an intensive program of drilling was organized. Drilling outlined an orebody with 3.5 million tons of ore averaging 0.28 ounces of gold per ton. It was on the basis of this reserve that a 1700 t. p.d. cyanide plant was designed. Needless to say, with such a limited ore reserve, economies in design and construction would have to be observed. Cortez Gold Mines is a joint venture with American Exploration & Mining Co., The Bunker Hill Company, Vernon F. Taylor, Jr., and Webb Resources, Inc. , as partners. American Exploration & Mining Co. is the operating partner.

Cyanide has been used for over a century worldwide for gold extraction. However, the presence of several metals and metalloids in ore requires greater amount of cyanide for an efficient gold recovery due to their solubilisation in conjunction with gold. The extraction residues are discharged into tailing storage facilities (TSFs) and may cause bird mortality if there is exposure to cyanide-bearing wastewater exceeding the toxic threshold. The toxicity arises from free cyanide released from weak acid dissociable (WAD) cyanide complexes. The International Cyanide Management Code (ICMC) has deemed 50 mg/L of WAD cyanide released into TSFs to be safe for wildlife protection. However, this concentration is based on observations of an apparent lack of toxicity rather than a toxicological approach. The National Industrial Chemicals Notification and Assessment Scheme (NICNAS) identified in 2010 that there is a lack of toxicity data to properly assess the environmental significance of cyanide levels at gold mines. Lack of knowledge for the toxicity of free cyanide and metal cyanide complexes to wildlife led to consider alternative direct assessment techniques for designating safe levels. Whilst toxicity may be assessed by using young chickens with animal ethics approval, the traditional bioassay approach to assess cyanide toxicity is impractical for gold mine TSFs. Bioassays using algal species such as Euglena gracilis, a unicellular alga, are widely used for ecotoxicological studies. A unique feature is that the Euglena gracilis Z cell has plant-like while SMZ cell has animal-like characteristics. The aims of this project are to evaluate the suitability of Euglena gracilis Z and SMZ strains to assess the toxicity of free cyanide and both strong (cobalt) and weak (zinc, copper and nickel) acid dissociable metal-cyanide complexes that may be present in TSFs.CITATION:Noller, B N, Ng, J C, Shini, S, Breuer, P L, Sichani-Teimouri, H and Alsaadi, R N, 2014. Attention of mine operators and engineers in the Picher zinc-lead field has been drawn increasingly in recent years to marginal ore deposits lying at greater than normal depth below surface in the marked structural depressions known as the Miami and Bendelari troughs. Not only mining but prospect and development drilling is relatively costly in the bottoms of the structural depressions known as the. Miami and Bendelari troughs which cross the center of the Picher field. Nevertheless, operations by various mining companies in recent years have shown that no insuperable problems exist, and with the gradual lowering of grade cut-offs throughout the field, certain potential deep-ore areas, previously only partly explored seemed worthy of further investigation. Some such areas were called to the attention of Bureau of Mines engineers by lease holders and operators, while others were noted in the course of Bureau&apos;s systematic investigation of Tri-State ore reserves. The writer was assigned to make a study of. those possible "trough extensions," in the course of which all available nine maps, drill logs, and prior reports were assembled. Subsequently 41 churn drill holes were bored by the Bureau in the periods October 1944 to May 1945 and October 1946 to April 1947. The general area under investigation this project is indicated on figure 1, which likewise shows its relation to nearby towns, roads, and railroads. The location of individual deposits included in the report is indicated more clearly on figure 3. Minable ore was found in only two holes, and the structural information procured by drilling was less encouraging than anticipated. This report, however, presents all factual data obtained, in the belief that they may be useful in subsequent prospecting and development projects in the areas investigated. There are also set forth some of the stratigraphic data relative to the Picher field ns a whole and the Miami and Bendelari troughs which were assembled in the preliminary investigation of this project.

This paper, dealing with network planning in an industrial complex, discusses the type and size of project that can be handled on a manual basis. After a review of the fundamentals of network planning, and specifically of the Critical Path Method, the author analyses several different types of projects, each with its own characteristics. Some can be handled in conjunction with a computer, but others can be dealt with equally well without one. Among the projects discussed are a blast furnace reline, the installation of a billet mill flying shear, and routine maintenance-type operations.

The primary steel industry of the Prairie Provinces consists essentially of three companies whose total annual melting capacity, as of January 1, 1963, was 333,000 net tons. These companies have steel rolling facilities. In addition, there are five other companies producing steel castings by melting scrap in electric furnaces which, with the plants having rolling facilities, gives a total annual furnace melting capacity of 380,000 tons. Since 1954, the annual production of steel ingots and castings has ranged from a low of 66,588 tons, in 1954, to a high of 211,138 tons in 1961. The present facilities on the Prairies for making steel ingots from scrap, and rolling them to produce light merchant mill products, appear to be sufficient for many years ahead. Steel scrap, as electric furnace feed to make steel ingots for the present line of products, will probably continue to be available at reasonable prices either on the Prairies or from the north-central United States. It is recognized, however, that residual elements in scrap may be-come of greater significance and necessitate more rigid control of scrap quality.

The Hidden Secret ore body is located within the Mt Charlotte underground mining system in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia. Mineralisation of the Hidden Secret ore body is lode style and therefore differs from the typical economical mineralisation mined at Mt Charlotte and consequently demanded a novel approach to the mining methodology. The ore body is lens like in shape, extending 200m along strike, 210m vertically, and dipping at 55 degrees. The lode width varies from 1.5m at the extremities to over 22m in the central zone of the ore body. Average grade is 3.4 Au grams per tonne. The initial mining methodology was Modified Avoca utilising Longhole Open Stoping with pillars, in a bottom up stoping sequence. However, as Hidden Secret became better defined and wider than initially modelled, it was identified that a high portion of gold would remain in the pillars and other mining concerns emerged such as remote backfilling large open voids and potentially unsafe vertical standoff distances between levels and wide open stopes. A re-evaluation of this method was undertaken and a new approach adapting a variation of Avoca methodology was identified to remove the rib pillars and replace them with a sill pillar separating the 4 levels into 2 distinct blocks. This new approach provided an immediate advantage by removing the bogger backfilling activity from the same level of the active stope front, enabling stope drilling and prepping to occur during the backfilling cycle. Bogging productivity has also improved as the fired ore is funnelled to the draw point by the backfill rill, significantly reducing the requirement for remote bogging thus improving bogging productivity. This mining method is currently in progress in the first of the two mining blocks and is on track to realise the targeted recovery of 7,700 ounces from the rib pillars.
