Maybe the scourge of our dams and reservoirs?the water hyacinth can be put to good use! The novel technology of phytoremediation embraces plant accumulation processes for the cleanup of toxic heavy metals and organic chemicals. Several plant species have been identified that are excellent hyperaccumulators of a number of heavy metals, e.g., Brassica juncea (Indian mustard) and Thlaspe caerulescens (Alpine pennycress). Other speciesincluding Myriophyllum brasiliense(Parrot?s feather), Salixsp. (willow), and Popullussp. (poplar) have also demonstrated phytoremediating abilities.

THE hall of the Western Iron and Nail Associations having kindly been placed at the service of the Institute, the opening session was held at 3 o'clock, Tuesday afternoon, May 13th, with an attendance of about one hundred and twenty-five members. Mr. William Metcalf, of Pittsburgh, read an address of welcome on behalf of the Local Committee of Arrangements, to which President E. B. Coxe responded. The following papers were then read and discussed : Regenerative Stoves; a Sketch of their History and Notes on their Use, by John M. Hartman, of Philadelphia. Some Curious Phenomena Observed on Making a Test of a Piece of Bessemer Steel, by William Kent, of Pittsburgh. On the Use of Determining Slag Densities in Smelting, by Thomas Macfarlane, of Wyandotte, Michigan. After the reading of these papers each member was presented by the Local Committee with a schedule of excursions, a specially prepared map of Pittsburgh and surroundings, and a directory of industrial works, all tastefully bound, and also with a metal badge bearing the seal of the Institute, to be worn on the excursions. This Bureau of Mines manual is oriented to the technical needs of an investigation of fire or explosion accidents and includes various practical and theoretical information that is needed in analyzing accidents or evaluating conditions that might lead to an accident. It is applicable to accidents in the chemical, mining, transportation, and other fuel-related industries. Specific procedures for conducting an accident investigation are outlined, and various guidelines are given for developing the fire or explosion evidence. Ignitability, flammability, and physicochemical data are presented for over 500 combustible gases, liquids, and solids; empirical and theoretical expressions are also given for extrapolating the behavior of combustible-oxidant-diluent systems to various environmental conditions. In addition, various data pertinent to damage analysis are summarized to facilitate the task of the investigator in developing plausible accident scenarios.

ABOUT two years ago some of my friends were discussing the amount of drill-steel breakage that was permissible or not excessive, per month, per rock ton, per ton of steel or any unit of measure or output that would give a comparison between different kinds of drill steel. No one seemed to know what life to expect of steel, or what percentage of breakage might be termed excessive. In fact there were no operating data available to guide one in selecting the best steel for our mines, nor could any ideas or information be secured from the steel manufacturers. One was merely told that so and so used their steel and it was very satisfactory; or else one was given a highly technical lecture on their specific heat-treatment. Any estimates on expected breakage were just guesses, ranging from a fraction of a per cent to as high as ten per cent per month.

Determination of the sampling constant and liberation diameter are of importance when applying the Fundamental Sampling Error (FSE) equation to optimise sampling protocols. The method for the direct determination of the sampling constant is based on the æGy 50-pieceÆ experiment and variants thereof, which is generally known as the heterogeneity test. In the coarse gold environment, the heterogeneity test is prone to poor repeatability and bias due to the very heterogeneity that it aims to quantify. A key issue is the large sample mass that can be required in the coarse gold environment, which may reach 1 t or more. The heterogeneity test often provides an evaluation of the background gold grade heterogeneity, but understates that of the high-grade coarse-gold component. This is because the total mass of fragments is usually too small to represent the mineralisation. Despite this relatively well-known problem, heterogeneity tests are often undertaken on deposits where the presence of coarse gold is ignored, not fully realised or vastly understated. Sampling types and protocol designs are frequently based on poor quality data that do not match the characteristics of the orebody. For this style of mineralisation, an empirical approach to define ore characteristics is recommended.CITATION:Dominy, S C and Minnitt, R C A, 2012. Times are changing for the mining industry. Civil society is demanding that miners pay more attention to the ways they impact on, and engage with, communities around their mines. Miners, in turn, are being forced to adapt and learn new social skills for which they were not originally trained. They are doing so in the middle of a broad resources boom, which is adding short-term operating challenges at the same time as miners need to be developing thoughtful solutions to longer term community issues. This paper examines a number of the issues that now loom on the horizon of mining companies. These include: human resources challenges and the crisis in minerals education; continuing community and social expectations of the resources industry and the impacts they will have, for example, on product stewardship, greenhouse gas emissions and the use of increasingly precious water resources; and current impediments to mineral exploration spending.It is concluded that the greatest challenge for the minerals industry is to develop a stronger cadre of local leaders and for the larger global miners to empower their local management to take on stronger public leadership responsibilities. There is a need for executive leadership to remember both the longer term and shorter term cyclical nature of the mining industry in developing solutions to community problems. Above all there is a compelling case for mining industry leaders to be more actively engaged with the wider community in the resolution of these issues.

As opposed to large household appliances, in the processing of which dissambling has an important role, this possibility is pushed into the background as the size decreases. The practicable solution is physical liberation of the used small electronic household devices (by comminution) and separation of the liberated components according to their physical properties. In the first phase of the experimental work the structural/material composition of the typical products (mixer, kitchen robot, hair dryer, coffee machine, iron, bread toaster, vacuum cleaner, oil fryer) was determined. In the second phase a physical liberability test for each appliance using a rotary shear/shredder for crushing and a hammer shredder for milling was carried out. In the third phase the experimental separability tests using an air classifier and a shaking air table, as well as an eddy-current and an electrostatic separator were performed. In the present paper the results obtained using the air classifier and the electrostatic separator, are reported. To follow the life of a grain a new methodological procedure was elaborated. The particle size fractions after comminution were sorted into material fractions (copper, aluminium, plastics, etc.), then separated, and finally the recovery of the material components in the products were determined. Furthermore, the joint separability was investigated from two points of view: 1) for grain fractions and 2) for each waste appliance. Four different nickel concentrates were oxidized in a laboratory scale laminar flow furnace in simulated flash smelting conditions. The major nickel- and iron-bearing minerals in the con- centrates were pentlandite, violarite, gersdorffite, and pyrite and pyrrhotite, respectively. Thermal decomposition, ignition and oxidation behavior of nickel and iron sulfides were examined by using optical and scanning electron microscopy. General reactivity of the concentrates was monitored with sulfur removal which was most effective in violarite-based concentrate. Pentlandite-concentrates needed higher experimental temperatures for complete desulfurization and gersdorffite-based concentrate contained 5 - 10 % of the original sulfur even in the most oxidizing conditions studied (1 100°C, 50 vol-% 02). The reactivity of the iron minerals was found to depend on the other minerals present in the concentrate. In this paper, the observed re- action products and mineralogical changes are presented and preliminary conclusions of possible reaction mechanisms of nickel-bearing minerals are discussed.

Gold rooms represent a high security area and preventing theft is a challenging task. Where gravity concentrates or high value unit intermediate products are present, particular and specific security procedures must be put in place. This paper describes the development and implementation which reflects best practice in gold room security. Procedures involving key holder systems, key locks, swipe cards and double locks preventing any one person having access to the gold room, including specific procedures for gravity gold concentrators, will be addressed. The use of monitoring and how to deal with alarms and potential hold ups will be reviewed. The use of cameras and archival DVD recorders is common in gold rooms. The use of electronic surveillance, movement detectors, seismic monitors and the two person policy and gold room entry procedures are described, including how to deal with visitors. The importance of confidentiality regarding smelting and gold pick-up days, plus strategies employed to minimise storing large quantities of gold on site will be presented. The role of metallurgical accounting in providing quality auditable information and the minimum standards of record keeping required is discussed. The role of the Gold Squad will be outlined. Regular auditing and risk analysis and several case studies are cited where security was deficient or improved.

"In 1997 when Royal Oak Mines Inc. went into receivership, the mineral processing technicians (mill operators) who had been working at Giant Mine in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories for most of their career walked out with no credentials to serve as testimony of their knowledge and skills.As a result of new diamond mining activity and the establishment of socio-economic agreements, mining industry representatives approached the Department of Education, Culture and Employment (ECE), Government of the Northwest Territories, in 1999. They requested support and direction to promote training and recognition for mineral processing technicians at BHP’s (BHP Diamonds Inc.) Ekati mine. ECE recommended the development of occupational standards and certification.This paper describes the development process and end products that resulted from this collaborative project between industry, government and education. In addition, industry representatives involved in the project share their views on the development process and the benefits of standards and certification.The conclusion invites industry members to support national occupational standards and certification with their associated benefits: standardized training in the workplace and institutions, proof of competence for hiring, recognition of prior learning, and a nationally and internationally recognized credential.INTRODUCTIONSwiftly changing labour market demands are nothing new in the North. The fur trade and mineral discoveries have brought employment to workers in a feast and famine cycle for decades. In the late 1990s, the Giant, Con, Lupin, Polaris and Nanasivik mines were nearing the end of productive runs. Many experienced workers found that without credentials, they had no proof of their abilities to offer prospective employers."

"An approach slab is the roadway segment that immediately follows a bridge intended to provide a smooth transition between the two elements. Some approach slabs have developed rough rideability with time due to differential settlement between the roadway embankment and the bridge. Soils in south Louisiana are generally poor and highly compressible and, therefore, pile-supported approach slabs were occasionally used. Timber piles of variable lengths are driven into the soft soils where no appreciable toe support exists. This resulted in the soils both supporting loads through shaft resistance and yet experiencing long-term consolidation settlement. Field testing and review of the records of over 120 approach slabs constructed in south Louisiana yielded the conclusion that their performance is primarily governed by negative skin friction (downdrag) imposed on the relatively short timber piles. A software (TU-DRAG) was developed to evaluate the deflection profile of a pile-supported approach slab based on its geometry and conditions of the underlying soils. It evaluates the effect of dragload considering the number and spacing of the piles at each transverse row and their variable lengths along the approach slab. TU-DRAG was utilized in the design of two transportation related projects which have been in service for more than 10 years.INTRODUCTIONThe problem of differential settlement at bridge approaches or “the bump at the bridge” has been recognized for many years. Research studies (1986, 1989, 1997, 2009 and 2013) by the Transportation Research Board (TRB) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) provided comprehensive evaluations of the performance of bridge approach slabs by assessing their field conditions and construction and maintenance records. Various states have also performed their own studies to investigate the performance of bridge approach slabs. The studies considered various types of structures including soil- and pile-supported approach slabs, integral bridge abutments and open-end abutments. Recommendations were provided for the design of new structures and for maintaining and repairing existing structures. Guidelines were offered regarding tolerable movements of bridges and their foundations based on measurements of vertical and horizontal movements of 580 bridges Moulton (1986). Vertical and horizontal movements greater than 102 mm (4 inches) and 51 mm (2 inches), respectively, were considered intolerable. Tolerable limits for angular distortion (differential settlement to span length) were suggested to be 1/250 and 1/200 for continuous and simple spans, respectively. It was reported that a differential settlement greater than 13 mm (0.5 inch) at the bridge interface would be sufficient to constitute a “bump” requiring mitigation."

Nowadays, small diameter tunnels are increasingly considered in pipeline projects as an alternative for sensitive crossings or when soil conditions limit the use of conventional pipeline installation methods like HDD. Safety concerns play a key role, especially for inner-city installations. Pipe jacked microtunnels and small segment lining tunnels can serve as casing tunnels if access is required during construction for the change of cutting tools in challenging ground conditions or for maintenance of the pipeline in operation. Small diameter tunneling solutions offer a high degree of flexibility for alignment design in terms of geology, length and radius.

"Inductive plasmas are now commonly used in material processing: spraying, powder synthesis, densification or spheroidization. An inductive discharge presents, in the coil region, recirculation eddies due to the Lorentz forces, resulting in an axial backflow. If the central jet is strong enough to ""pierce"" the recirculation this axial backflow disappears on the centerline, but the external layer of the injection flow is skimmed by the remaining eddy, and particulates are rejected to the discharge periphery. To avoid this disadvantage, it is common to introduce the injection pipe inside the discharge, so that its outlet is positioned after the recirculation eddy. The powders remain confined in the axial zone, to the expense of shortened residence time.In order to increase the efficiency of the particle trajectories, a double flow injector has been designed. It enables the particles to travel closer to the axis, while the outer schrouding gas is skimmed and passes through the electromagnetic eddies. This injector is made up of two concentric tubes. The powders are injected with the carrier gas in the inner tube. A schrouding gas is injected in the annular space between the inner and the outer tubes. The powder is confined to the vicinity of the axis, resulting in a more homogeneous thermal treatment.Tungsten powders have been spheroidized with and without this device. Using the double flow injection, the spheroidization yield has been increased from 70 % up to 95 %.The design of such an injection device has. been studied and improved using numerical modelling. Another useful tool, a visualisation technique described elsewhere, has been used for the experimental study, that drastically simplifies the comparison between experimental and theoretical results: injecting yttrium oxide into the discharge results in a colorful display of the 4000 K isothenn: the ""cold"" zone, below 4000, appearing as red, and the ""hot"" zone as blue. Furthermore, it is of great industrial interest since it is a very cheap and efficient way to obtain a picture of an important isotherm."

The design work undertaken by Rock Mechanics Technology (now part of Golder Associates (Golder)) has played a major part in successfully establishing mechanised room and pillar working in Indian coalmines, both for the development of new districts and for the re-establishment of old districts prior to pillar extraction on panel retreat.Golder has used appropriate design of pillars, extraction sequences and final snook sizes to minimise ground control risks during pillar extraction. Where the strata will not cave reliably, partial extraction systems leaving either a crush pillar or a substantial yield pillar have been adopted.Remote monitoring of selected pillars during the extraction process using stress cells, extensometry and convergence measurements provides confirmation of pillar behaviour and verification of designs.A new telltale device, giving a visible warning of impending caving, is now installed at all Indian pillar extraction sites and is proving very successful.CITATION:MacAndrew, K M, Garcia, A S and Gregson, I D, 2014. The Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specificetiona that define the requirements in terms of heating value of the coal, expressed in British thermal units, and the composition as shown by proximate analyses. To these, when required, are added the fusing temperature of ash and the free-swelling index. Under most of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal, end that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract. The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instructions3/ issued by the Bureau; the samples are analyzed in the Bureau's laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor and, if it is not, a price adjustment is made. Analyses of the delivered coal and "tipple" samples (samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks) provide valuable data for use in evaluating future bids. In addition, the continuous sampling of coal as delivered 1s a check on the practical results obtained in burning the coal.

A methane monitor that complies with 30CFR75.313 has been designed and fabricated using a novel pressure modulated infrared absorption technique. The methane monitor met or exceeded in performance all of its target specifications. The monitor was operated continuously during production mining for the entire duration (45 days) of the in-mine test; no failures occurred during the test. The monitor was regularly checked with calibration gas and no shifts in calibration were found during the in-mine test. Operating principles, performance data and electrical schematics are included in the report.

PERHAPS the most important event f or exploration geophysics in 1940 was the publication of three textbooks : "Geophysical Prospecting for Oil," by L. L. Nettleton ; "Exploration Geophysics," by John J. Jakosky; and "Geophysical Exploration," by C. A. Heiland. The literature had grown so bulky, and such a long time had elapsed since the publication of the texts by Ambronn and Eve, that treatises covering exploration geophysics comprehensively in all its branches and giving literature and patent references were sorely needed. This need has been satisfied admirably in these textbooks, and geophysicists owe the authors a debt of gratitude. In 1940, geophysics came of age. A conference on applied nuclear physics was held at Massachusetts Institute of Technology from Oct. 28 to Nov. 2. Several papers on geophysical subjects were presented at this meeting. Geophysical activity has decreased in all parts of the world except perhaps in Canada where, under the stimulus of the war's increased demands, prospecting for oil has increased. However, even there the war has had a seriously adverse effect on prospecting for ores and upon the promotion of new properties, although activity in producing and near-producing mines has been stimulated.

"Novel rock breakage techniques are becoming more viable and attractive to industry. Microwave energy, as a thermal energy capable of inducing micro cracks through differential heating (therefore expansion) is a technology gaining considerable attention in mineral processing and ore comminution applications. Recently, the use of microwave radiation has been evaluated as a possible avenue for terrestrial and extra-terrestrial drilling applications as well as full face tunneling or rock breaking machines. As part of an overall research on use of microwave in rock breaking systems, the influence of microwave energy on the mechanical properties of common hard rock types as basalt has been investigated. The results revealed that microwave energy irradiation imposes micro and macro cracks to the surface of the rock being irradiated. In explosive free tunneling applications using TBM, jointed and cracked surface of rock eases the cutting process and increases penetration rate. The experimental setups have been simulated with the help of a multi-physics numerical modeling and the results have been compared with practical experiment. The wave propagation of microwave has been simulated and the distances where the power intensity is higher are identified. Experimental and simulation results underlined the potential impact of the use of microwave energy in underground or surface excavation applications such as mining and tunneling. This will also contribute economically when mine-to-mill operation is fully considered to improve the efficiency of rock crusher stages. INTRODUCTIONDuring hard rock breakage (i.e., separation of a piece of a rock from its parent deposit) in mining and civil applications, the performance of mechanical equipment such as tunnel boring machines (TBMs) is limited by high levels of bit wear and maintenance. Preweakening natural rock prior to breaking it by machine is one approach to lower bit wear and maintenance costs. Some preweakening methods apply heat directly or indirectly. For example, flame torch-assisted TBMs (Lauriello et al., 1974; Resource Technology, 1984) have been deemed economical in terms of equipment, but their feasibility is limited by high fuel consumption. Microwave energy could offer several advantages over the flame torch method: it does not produce emissions or increase fuel consumption (electricity source is available on the machine), and is easy to control (quick power on and off)."

THE Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act (30 U.S.C., 321-325, and amendments) become law April 5, 1644, and a period of intensive research and development in this field was begun by the Bureau of Mines. As part of this program bulletins were published on a pressure hydrogenation,3 the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis,4 and oil shale.5 The Bureau also has published a short bibliography on coal gasification,6 mostly of a theoretical nature. Because coal gasification is prerequisite to Hither the Fischer-Tropsch or coal-hydrogenation processes, publishing this sizable, collection of technical information in this form will be valuable. The material is presented in three parts, as follows: I. United States Patents. II. United Kingdom, Australian, Canadian, and South African Patents. III. Belgium, French, German, Italian, and Swedish Patents. The domestic patents for this bulletin were collected between 1963 and 1955. Some of the Foreign Patents were collected at the same time and a few of them later in 1961. Part I was published in 1960; Part II was published in 1962.

IN most human endeavors a knowledge of the terrain is essential to the effective carrying out of projects, but no line of work is more dependent on maps than theoretical and applied geology. Maps of a kind do exist for all of the area of the United States, but most of them are crude affairs and of little use in engineering, planning, and scientific research. Topographic mapping in the United States was initiated on a national scale by the U. S. Geological Survey and the organizations that were merged in its creation to make base maps for geologists. Their work could not be effectively done then and cannot be effectively done now without maps that accurately delineate the earth's surface. The distribution of the rock masses that contain valuable mineral bodies, or that by their intrusion brought them into existence, is the first step in a study of the mineral resources of the nation. This work requires three-dimensional maps, that is, topographic maps on which the land forms are shown by contours.
