Rock engineering has now been practised as a discipline for about50 years, and many sophisticated methods of analysis for use in rock engineering design have been developed. However, analysis is only a tool for use in engineering design, and rock masses are often so complex that realistic modelling of them, even with sophisticated methods of analysis, is impossible. At the other end of the scale, rock mass classification methods have been developed to quantify the rock mass. These ?numbers? are now widely used for assessment of stability of underground and surface excavations in rock, for the determination of rock support requirements, and for the estimation of rock mass strength and deformation properties. In considering these areas, the two concepts?design, and prediction of behaviour?will be dealt with. The discussion will be introduced by a consideration of the characteristics of the rock mass, which will highlight the variability in its properties and hence the uncertainty in the behavioural parameters. Examples of real projects will be used to illustrate the discussion.

This paper describes the incipient heatings that occurred below ground in the High Main and Main seams at the mine between the years 1963 and 1966. The possible causes, effects and activities associated with such heatings are discussed in an attempt to establish the precautions necessary to minimize such occurrences. The assessment of as many "norms" as possible is made to enable the earliest detection and level of activity to be determined.

Axial flow fans are commonly used as auxiliary fans in underground mines to supply air to development headings. As diesel dilution requirements increase the fans used in conjunction with ventilation bags are becoming larger in diameter to move greater quantities of air over greater development distances. It is not uncommon for mining operations to sometimes use a number of these larger auxiliary fans with high airflow capacity in parallel as primary fans for the operations. These primary fan stations are often considered temporary installations and the fan selection and fan station design is rarely optimised. These temporary installations may become permanent resulting in an inefficient or unreliable primary ventilation system. A recent study looked at the likely causes of multiple primary fan failures at one operation with axial fans installed as primary units where the fan selection and fan station aerodynamic design was far from optimal. This paper explores some of the typical mechanisms of failure such as high pressure stall, unbalanced airflow, and fan tip speed as well as fabrication material. The paper proposes a number of good practise principles that should be considered during the design of a fan station. A second topic covered is the advantages and disadvantages of using different types of fans such as axial, mixed flow and centrifugal units. Here the concept of fan specific speed and its relevance to fan selection is discussed. In order to make increased use of automation in copper smelting, it is evident that a useful first step .world be the accurate determination of the copper end point in the converter operation. After laboratory tests, the copper end points in a copper converter at Gaspe Copper Mmes Ltd. were determined without reference to melt samples or other observations. The results indicated that the rapid measurement of the S02 level in the gas released from the converter has potential as a new and independent method of determining the copper end point in converter operation.

CLIMAX ore is an altered and highly silicified granite, about half of the gangue being quartz. Molybdenite is the only mineral recovered and most of it is intimately associated with the quartz in fine veinlets. Other minerals are molybdite, pyrite, and chalcopyrite. Although the molybdite may be readily extracted by hydrometallurgical methods, its content is too low to make this profitable. The pyrite ranges from 2 to 5 per cent and the chalcopyrite from 0.03 to 0.05 per cent. There is not enough copper to make its recovery attractive and one of the problems is its elimination, and that of pyrite iron, from the final product. On account of the high degree of dissemination of the molybdenite and the necessity of eliminating the iron and copper, fine-grinding followed by flotation is the only known feasible method of concentration. The mining methods and practices used at the Young zinc mine, American Zinc Co. of Tennessee, have resulted in a low-cost, high-yield operation. Zinc ore (sphalerite) occurs in limestone-dolomite beds of the Kingsport Formation and is mined by modified room and pillar method. Utilizing trackless mining equipment which incorporates a high degree of flexibility, this operation has had a steady increase in productivity.

El yacimiento de La Zanja ubicada en el caserío La Zanja, Santa Cruz de Succhabamba, Cajamarca, inició sus actividades de exploración en 1991 y las de producción en el 2010. MLZ construyó el embalse o reservorio llamado Bramadero, que acumula las aguas de escorrentía de la quebrada del mismo nombre durante el periodo de lluvias, las cuales son empleadas para el consumo humano en la unidad minera, y en menor escala durante la época de estiaje para los procesos de operación. En este sentido, el presente texto señala la construcción de la presa Bramadero, la cual genera agua para beneficio de las poblaciones ubicadas aguas abajo de las instalaciones. Asi también cuenta con un programa de monitoreo ambiental para vigilar la calidad y la cantidad de aguas superficiales y subterráneas. Por tal motivo, cuenta con estaciones hidrométricas para evaluar en tiempo real la calidad del agua en los cuerpos receptores del área de influencia de la unidad minera.

These noise control modifications were installed and successfully tested at three operating quarries. This report identifies the major noise sources that can be encountered in crushing and screening plants, and discusses the applicable noise control materials and techniques that a plant operator can utilize on a retrofit basis to reduce equipment noise.

A table of factors, for rapid, accurate calculation of the volume of pure helium in cylindrical steel containers, is presented. By use of the table the volume of helium in a container, at base conditions of 14.7 psia and 70° F, can be calculated from the observed pressure and temperature of the helium and the known internal volume of the container. The table covers a pressure range from a to 4,500 psia in 10 psi increments and a temperature range of 0° to 120° F in 2° increments. The calculation of volume requires a single multiplication, using a factor from the table and the known internal volume of the container. A discussion and evaluation of the accuracy obtainable and a derivation of the formula used (which takes into account compressibility of helium, thermal expansion of steel containers, and the stretch of steel due to internal pressure) are presented. An example showing how the table can be used is given also.

The one-day event offers attendees the opportunity to listen to their peers outline what’s new in the underground construction industry, get updates on major projects in North America and have a chance to catch up of old friends.The conference is put on by the Underground Construction Association of SME. This latest conference attracted about 370 specialists in the industry. The theme for this year’s event was “Water Tunnels, Past, Present and Future.”The technical session included talks focused on major tunneling projects, including the massive California Water Fix program and the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) Metropolitan tunnel redundance program in Boston. The conference also included an update on the Gateway Project from Phil Rice from WSP and Mahammed Nasim of Amtrak as well as a Tunnel Industry update.The following is a sample of a few of the presentations. The reduced need for traditionally trained and educated personnel in the mining industry is systemic to the changing mining industry. Universities and other training institutions are meeting the traditional skill needs required by the industry, but are the skill needs going to be the same in the near future? The answer may be no. Mining is changing because of increased liabilities and costs of environmental and safety is-sues; lower grades of minerals in traditional mining activities and the advent of new bio-chemical processes and robotic equipment. More productive and economic alternatives, and larger, more sophisticated and automatic equipment, are also changing the industry. Engineering is more specific, accurate, precise and expensive. Measurement is more thorough and timely of progress, production, costs and productivity. And, the industry will likely be engaging in more undersea mining, possibly space-based processing, less human interaction and more remote control of events than was previously thought possible.

Introduction The township of Swayze, from which the Swayze gold area derives its name, is in the Sudbury mining division, approximately 150 miles northwest of Sudbury. The gold area may be regarded as situated at the southwest corner of a triangular area whose northeast and southeast corners are at Porcupine and Shiningtree, respectively, and whose sides are between 70 miles and 90 miles in length. On a geological map, it would be found that belts of Keewatin greenstones and sediments form the sides of this triangle, and that they surround a large granite mass. Prior to the summer of 1931 the Swayze corner of this triangle had probably been less prospected than the other parts and comparatively little was known of it from the standpoint of gold mining possibilities. The extensive belts of iron formation to the south and west of Swayze received some attention about the year 1909, and during the years 1927 and 1928 some prospecting was done in the townships of Greenlaw and Cunningham, south of Swayze, but chiefly for base-metals- copper, zinc, and lead. In the summer of 1931 a very promising discovery of gold-bearing quartz was made by J. G. and J. L. Kenty, working for the Brett-Trethewey Mines, Ltd., in association with Northern Canada Mining Corporation, and Northland Prospectors, Ltd., and this property, now known as the Kenty Gold Mines, Ltd., has been actively developed with very encouraging results. Following this discovery a6d during the summer of 1932 much prospecting took place in the area, as a result of which a number of other discoveries of gold were made, chiefly to the west of the original find. They are distributed over a wide area, which includes the townships of Rollo, Raney, Swayze, Denyes, Halcrow, and Greenlaw.

"The Search Minerals Foxtrot project in Labrador represents a significant Canadian resource of rare earth elements rich in the sought after heavy rare earth elements (19.8% HREE/TREE). A preliminary economic assessment of the project indicated that the project is technically feasible and economically attractive. A variety of metallurgical test programs have been undertaken which have led to significant streamlining and simplification of the process flowsheet. The improved flowsheet should allow Search to reach production earlier and will use conventional processing equipment. The results of these test programs are presented and discussed in this paper INTRODUCTIONSearch Minerals Inc. (Search) is exploring and developing a number of deposits for rare earth element (REE) recovery in Labrador, Canada. The Port Hope Simpson District is in the southeast of Labrador and is highly prospective for heavy and light rare earth elements. The Foxtrot deposit sits within the Port Hope Simpson REE District (Figure 1), which is 70 km long by up to 10 km wide. The infrastructure available at Foxtrot is excellent; a deep-water port, air strip, and road and power infrastructure are pre-existing at St. Lewis. The three communities of Port Hope Simpson, St. Lewis and Mary’s Harbour are in close proximity to the site."

Since the beginning of the computing age, technical software packages have not been developed to address only programming specialists but have been dedicated to process engineers. For process analysis, BRGM is developing and commercializing three packages: ? sampling software: ECHANT 2.0 for Windows ? material balance calculation: BILCO 2.0 for Windows ? steady-state simulator for plant design, adaptation and optimization: USIM PAC 2.1 for Windows This paper deals in a first part with the main features of these three packages. In a second part, advanced models are presented for SAG/ AG mills and flotation columns. An industrial case of application is shown for each of them.

High pressure grinding mills have been successfully introduced in the industry. They offer the possibilities for capacity increase of existing plants and reduction of operating costs. Further metallurgical advantages in gold and copper are possible. The plants in operation are running in different applications and modes of operation. They can be installed in a combination with SAG and ball mills or in a stand-alone mode. There is no doubt that the dominant future source of gold will be the so-called refractory ores, especially those with gold in a pyrite/arsenopyrite matrix. Minproc Engineers is taking an active role in establishing detailed design criteria for a number of apparently competing processes. This involves generating a detailed understanding of the metallurgy involved, systematic pilot plant testing, and the application of advanced engineering technologies. Traditional methods for installing gaskets for segmented bored tunnels have relied upon different bonding procedures with adhesives that carry a series of disadvantages to segment producers. Fixation of the gaskets into the concrete segment as part of the casting procedure has been developed over the last 20 years and has emerged as an economical solution to produce high-quality tunnel segments for various technical tunnel applications. "Alloying refining with rare earth elements followed by acid leaching was examined for the potential of upgrading of metallurgical grade silicon. Microstructure study of silicon alloyed with small additions of rare earths showed behavior relatively similar to the influence of calcium addition. After alloying with neodymium the phosphorus content was detected in various intermetallic silicides containing neodymium and iron. The content of lanthanum and neodymium in refined silicon was by several times lower than that of aluminium and calcium. Alloying with lanthanum and neodymium at smaller additions than calcium reduced the phosphorus content down to the same level. The efficiency of lanthanum and neodymium in removal of boron and phosphorus at the 1-2 wt% of their additions and their low solubility in silicon make the alloying with these metals followed by acid leaching an attractive option for the refining route of metallurgical grade silicon up to solar grade.IntroductionA striving for a cheap ""green"" energy directs the research interests in silicon solar cells towards new efficient refining routes for metallurgical grade silicon (MG-Si, -98% purity). The silicon price determines up to high extent the solar module's price, so that cheap and efficient metallurgical process is awaited. The research challenge is to fulfil the purity requirements of solar grade silicon (SoG-Si, 6N) by competing with the energy-consuming and environmentally unfriendly Siemens process. Most difficult impurities to remove are boron and phosphorus, so technologies dedicated to their efficient removal attract an attention of industry and academia.Alloying refining (also known as solvent refining) is one of the most promising refining options, which is based on a principle of solid-liquid extraction using limited solubility of impurity elements in solid silicon [ 1]. Various elements were proposed for alloying refining: aluminium [2], calcium [3], tin [4], iron [5], copper [6] etc. The attractiveness of the alloying refining is in decreasing a melting point of the metal mixture and an affinity of the alloying element to the most harmful impurities, especially to boron and phosphorus. However, the difficulties are still faced due to self-solubility of the alloying elements, their low affinity to boron and/or phosphorus, silicon losses and necessity of removal of the silicide impurity phases in an additional step, using acid leaching [7], fractional melting [ 8] etc."

The number of completed petroleum refineries in the United States continued to decline in 1937 , but the total capacity to process crude oil continued to increase . These facts were ascertained in the Bureau's annual canvass of refinery capacity as of January 1 , 1938 . Several important changes were made in the census questionnaire for January 1 , 1938 . First , the basis of reckoning cracking capacity was changed from cracking stock charged to cracked gasoline produced . Although this is a definite improvement , in that it is no longer necessary to consider the yield , it is unfortunate that the data for January 1 , 1938 cannot be compared with cracking - capacity statistics since 1925. Other changes or additions included separating capacity at operating plants into that actually operating and that closed down ; collecting data on capacity added or retired during the previous year ; breaking down idle capacity according to physical status ; and separating new capacity into that built for replacement and that built to augment existing capacity . Prior to January 1 , 1938 , the total capacity of an operating plant was listed as " operating " even though some stills might have been closed down ; furthermore , the only capacity reported as being under construction was that of new plants that were being built on January 1. To make the statistics clear , the totals for the United States as of January 1 , 1938 , are given on both the old and the new bases . On January 1 , 1938 , there were 551 completed plants compared with 572 the previous year . Ten new plants were under construction on that date compared with 11 the year before . The greatest number of completed plants recorded was 632 on January 1 , 1936 ; since then , competitive conditions , particularly in the East Texas field , have been instrumental in reducing the number of small independent plants . The total crude- oil capacity of the completed refineries on January 1 , 1938 , was 4,351,151 barrels , of which 3,970 , 196 barrels ( 91 percent ) represented the capacity in actual operation and 380,955 barrels ( 9 percent ) was shut down . The " shut -down " capacity ( 199,875 barrels on the old basis ) was the lowest since pre- depression days , chiefly because numerous idle East Texas plants were removed from the list . The new method of compiling the statistics sheds considerable light on excess crudeoil capacity , which has been the subject of considerable speculation in recent years . The highest daily average crude runs to stills reached in this country was about 3,460,000 barrels in September 1937. At that time , the total crude - oil capacity was about 3,925,000 barrels .
