Reservoir oil analyses from seven wells in the Greater Clareton area have been included in a study of the original characteristics of oil in the Newcastle sandstone reservoir . These data correlated with areal location of the wells show an increase of saturation pressure in a general north - south or downdip direction . The increase amounts to about 500 psi in more than 17 miles , which corresponds to a depth increase of about 1,600 feet . To facilitate application of the data to engineering analyses , average characteristics are given for arbitrary north and south divisions of the 22 - mile - long producing area . The downdip increase of saturation pressure is taken as evidence of updip diffusion of solution gas from a somewhat higher concentration at the bottom of the reservoir . This effect is opposite to that previously observed in two prominent high- relief reservoirs in the Rocky Mountain area . The increasingly greater saturation pressures southward or downdip in the Greater Clareton area suggest a continuing migration of fluids into the structure .

Although the economically important uranium minerals are difficult to recognize under the ore microscope, they can be identified by a combination of qualitative and quantitative techniques. Useful quantitative techniques include indentation hardness, percent reflectance, spectral reflectance curves, and color coordinates. The latter two properties are especially distinctive for the primary urahlferous minerals uraninite, coffinite, brannerlte, and davidite. Together with the quantitative properties of indentation hardness and reflectance, the character and color of internal reflections are distinctive for many of the secondary uranium minerals. Ore microscopic techniques also provide an excellent means for determining the intergrowths of these minerals with other ore and gangue minerals. Such intergrowths are important to an understanding of the genesis of uranium deposits, and they may be important to uranium extractions.

[This paper sets forth the burning characteristics of coke used as a domestic fuel as shown by work of the U. S. Bureau of Mines and others. Coke is a truly smokeless solid fuel and is held in high regard for this quality. Ways are being found for making commercial coke from a wider range of cools than heretofore, and tale use of coke for domestic heating is increasing. "IntroductionDuring 1994, Barrick Gold Corporation, or American Barrick at that period, acquired Lac Minerals Ltd. properties. One of them was the Bousquet Complex. The Bousquet Complex is divided into three distinct sites: one mine (Bousquet 2), one mill (Est-Malartic Division) and one analytical chemistry laboratory (Les Terrains auriferes).The Bousquet 2 orebody was discovered in 1986. An extensive drilling program was initiated during 1987. Its purpose was to define the orebody extent. At the end of 1997, gold production from Bousquet 2 mine reached 1 290 000 oz of gold from a cumulative tonnage processed of 4 175 000 M t.From 1980 to 1990, the Est-Malartic mill was used for the treatment of ore from the following mines: Bousquet 1, Doyon, Francoeur (Richmont mines), Buckshot and 1-20 stope. At present, the mill receives ore from the Bousquet 2 mine.HistoryThe Est-Malartic mill is located close to the town of Malartic in northwestern Quebec. The mill has been in production since the mid-1930s processing mainly clean, free mill gold ore. Active mining from the Est-Malartic mine ceased in 1979 and the mill was switched to custom processing of ore from La Mine Doyon located some 45 km to the west. This custom processing arrangement continued until 1987 when the expanded mill at Doyon became available to process all of the Doyon production. In 1987, Lac Minerals commenced development of a second mine at the Bousquet site located 40 km west of Malartic. This mine, Bousquet 2, is the down dip extension of the La Ronde mine developed by Agnico Eagle. During pre-feasibility evaluations, it was determined that it would be economically more attractive to modify the existing Est-Malartic mill than building a new facility on site. The Est-Malartic mill modifications for processing the high-copper/gold ore from the Bousquet 2 mine began in late 1989 and new circuits were commissioned in mid-1990. Modifications included the addition of both gravity and flotation concentration circuits to recover coarse, free gold and the copper. The existing leaching circuit continued to operate on the copper flotation tailings with some minor modifications to the solution handling systems. A S02/Air cyanide destruction circuit was also added at that time."

Two key elements in the design of a pastefill or high density hackfill system are the preparation of the backfill material and its distribution underground. This paper examines these two areas. Owing to the essentially impervious nature of total mill tailings, preparation of pastefill and high density fill from current tailings involves a physical dewatering process. There are currently three methods available for this process: I. Vacuum or pressure filters. These represent the 'traditional' approach to the preparation of pastefill. 2. Paste production storage mechanism. This is a thickening/storage mechanism developed with the specific objective of producing paste/high density backfills. 3. Fluidization. This system utilises silos fitted with simple dewatering devices and nozzles. Recently developed by CANMET, it provides the simplest and most economical approach. This paper describes and compares the three preparation methods, from a practical and an economic point of view. Once the pastefill/high density fill has been prepared and binder added, the backfill must be distributed underground into the stopes. A fundamental factor in the design of a distribution system is the rheology of the material- No two materials will exhibit the same properties, and a sequence of rheological and related testing is required prior to the completion of the design of the underground distribution system. This paper covers the testwork normally required and discusses the fundamental design parameters of pastefill distribution systems. The final section of this paper summarises the use of pastefill at three mincsin Canada.

The selection of a process for treating a gold ore is governed primarily by the characteristics of the ore under consideration. The form in which the gold occurs, its mode of association with other minerals, and the size and surface condition of the gold particles are important factors which influence materially the choice of procedure for recovering gold. A knowledge of these characteristics may be obtained by microscopic and chemical methods combined with experimental testing. Cyanidation and amalgamation, either alone or in conjunction with flotation and gravity methods, are peculiarly adapted to the treatment of gold ores, especially those of relatively low grade. Gold alloys readily with mercury provided both present clean surfaces. The presence of oils and grease, antimony and arsenic minerals, or soluble sulphides have a harmful effect. Very small, flaky particles of gold frequently are lost in amalgamation because of noncontact with the mercury. Fine gold in pyrite, or gold having rusty or contaminated surfaces, is often lost for the same reason. Grinding or some form of abrasion sometimes removes surface films of iron oxide or substances of a similar nature, and alkalies or other chemicals are used to remove grease. Gold is readily soluble in cyanide solution, and this method of treatment is particularly effective in the recovery of gold from the tailings resulting from other types of concen¬tration procedure. Cyanide solutions must contact the gold to insure recovery, and the porosity of the ore treated and the fineness of grinding required are important governing factors. The use of lime in cyanidation is necessary to protect the cyanide, to precipitate undesirable substances, and to settle slimes. Certain substances in ores are harmful in cyanidation; chief among them are those that combine with cyanide, forming cyanides, and carbon which precipitates gold from solution. Arsenic and antimony are also harmful if present in sufficient quantity. These and other difficulties encountered in cyaniding certain ores often are overcome by roasting prior to leaching. Zinc dust is used almost universally for precipitating precious metals from cyanide solutions. The refining and melting of the product may be accomplished by oxidizing the zinc before melting it in graphite pots with fluxes, although sulphuric acid is now used largely to remove the zinc before melting. Straight cyanidaticn practice is being replaced by flotation as a major process, followed by cyanide leaching of the tailings, but amalgamation is still needed as a primary process for the recovery of coarse gold before either flotation or cyanidation.

"Zimbabwe is endowed with rich deposits of minerals such as diamonds, platinum, coal, uranium, lithium, gold, antimony, iron, and chrome. Bioleaching has been implemented as an efficient and low-cost method to extract metals such as copper, cobalt, and gold from sulphide and/or ironcontaining ores and mineral concentrates in a number of countries around the globe. Zimbabwe, despite being a world leader in mineral wealth, has gone through years of economic stagnation which have brought with them energy shortages. Bioleaching is an innovative way to recover minerals from ores using relatively low-capital-cost and non-polluting technology. Principally, iron- and sulphur-oxidizing bacteria can be used to oxidize iron and sulphide to ferric iron and sulphuric acid, respectively, and the ferric iron oxidizes the insoluble metal sulphides to soluble metal sulphates that can be readily recovered from solution. Although some minerals such as gold are inert to biological reactions, they can be liberated using bacteria that act on certain types of ores and other minerals that co-occur with these minerals. The geology of the mineralized areas in Zimbabwe, rich in chalcopyrite / pyrite, allows a number of microorganisms to be used for the extraction of minerals by bio-oxidation. This paper reviews the potential of bioleaching in the country. IntroductionZimbabwe has rich deposits of minerals including diamonds, platinum, coal, uranium, lithium, gold, antimony, iron, and chrome. Bioleaching is defined as the use of microorganisms to facilitate the extraction of metals from sulphide or iron-containing ores or concentrates (Rawlings, 2004, 1997). Bioleaching has been shown to be an efficient (Blowes, Ptacek, and Jurjovec, 2003; Nordstrom and Southam, 1997; Schippers, 2004) and low-cost (Schippers et al., 2010) method to extract minerals in many countries around the globe. For example, aerobic Fe(II)- and sulphur-oxidizing bacteria have been shown to be up to two orders of magnitude more efficient in the oxidation of pyrite than the chemical processes (Blowes, Ptacek, and Jurjovec, 2003; Nordstrom and Southam, 1997; Schippers, 2004). Additionally, bioleaching can be used to extract minerals from low-grade ores, sulphidic waste rock dumps, and tailings efficiently (Schippers et al., 2010)."

Between 1986 and 1989, at the request of the U. S. Bureau of Land Management, personnel from the U. S. Bureau of Mines Western Field Operations Center studied the highly-mineralized, 25,335-acre, Crack Canyon Wilderness Study Area (UT-060-028A), to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The 16-mi-long, 2-mi to 4-mi-wide stud/ area is on the southeast side of the San Rafael Swell, about 40 mi southwest of Green River, Emery County, southeast-central Utah. The study area is underlain by Mesozoic sedimentary beds. Uranium, the principle mineral resource, occurs in two formations. The principle uranium deposits are in mudstone, sandstone, and conglomerate lenses in the 22-mi-long outcrop of the Triassic Chinle Formation which parallels and straddles the northwest boundary of the study area, Some small low-grade uranium occurrences and an extensive gypsum deposit are hosted by the Jurassic-age rocks that underlie the southeast part of the study area.

P UBLZCLTY and engineers do not mix. In the very words of my subject, there is an apparent contradiction. In the past, publicity has been abhorrent to the engineer. It seems to be true that the engineer, because of his training or his background, has developed a state of mind which omits publicity. At any rate he has done a poor publicity job for himself. The average engineer is self-conscious; he ought to be class-conscious. If T should ask the men in this hall to get up one by one and tell who they are and what they have done, there would be an instinctive reaction in the mind of each man-a feeling that this was out of place. If I should ask each man to get up and tell something about his neighbor, I should find that each neighbor, once he got acquainted with the man next to him and understood what he was doing, would be as human and as generous-hearted in telling about his brother engineer as is any professional man.

The following is a description of the methods employed at the Eureka-Asteroid mine, which is situated on the Gogebic range, at Ramsey, Mich. The mime is operated by the Castile Mining Co. under the direction of Oglebay Norton & Co. This paper has been prepared in accordance with an outline furbished by the United States Bureau of Mines, and in one of a series, on mining methods and costs covering the principal minim operations throughout the United States. Checking the quality of a blast may be considered as subjective. Checking this quality will require measuring objective parameters. One of them is the resulting fragmentation of the blasted product. Numerous fragmentation æmeasuringÆ systems have been developed and marketed, based on image-processing. This presentation of FragScan will illustrate advantages and difficulties when using such a system. FragScan is essentially defending a policy of large and representative sampling. The purpose is to show how fragmentation is discriminating both productivity and profit of quarry operations on a blast-by blast basis. The next step will then be to ædriveÆ the blasting process to reach a æbetterÆ fragmentation. Other applications require the fragmentation as an essential result: this is the case for large boulders used in structure-reinforcement. Several case-studies have shown that FragScan can be used for quality-control, checking size-distribution of the product according to the requirements of the end-user. Only clear thinking about the precise use of such a æmeasurementÆ will further the success of this task.

"Ilmenite is the most important titanium-bearing constituent of titaniferous iron ores. Such ores, of which the United States has abundant reserves, are of interest because they constitute an important potential source of both iron and titanium that may be tapped in times of stress, and which eventually may be utilized in the normal course of events.As the iron and titanium constituents of titaniferous iron ores are not completely separable from each other by ore-dressing methods, any process for metal recovery will, of necessity, involve reduction of the iron in ilmenite. Consequently, knowledge of the thermodynamic properties of ilmenite should supplement information already available concerning those ores. With this in view, the Pacific Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines undertook to evaluate thermodynamic properties; the data obtained are the subject of this report.Three types of experimental work were involved. First, low-temperature specific heats of ilmenite were measured in the temperature range 500 to 29S° K. These data serve to evaluate the entropy, a quantity necessary for a reliable evaluation and correlation of other thermodynamic properties. Second, high-temperature heat-content measurements were made in the temperature range 298° to 1,743° K. The data serve to bridge the gap between room temperature and elevated reduction-process temperatures. Finally, hydrogen-reduction equilibria were measured in the temperature range 1,220° to1,375° K. These data-give a direct measure of the free energy of reduction of ilmonite at these temperatures and, in conjunction with results of the other two types of measurements, serve to obtain the heat of formation of ilmenite, a quantity not readily determinable by direct calorimetric means.The data are correlated to form a composite, self-consistent portrayal of the thermodynamic properties of ilmenite, which may be used in evaluating the efficacy of any reducing agent of known thermodynamic properties. Selective-reduction of iron in ilmenite by hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and carbon are considered in this report."

"In May 2015 the New Monte Bianco aerial cableway, operating on the Italian side, have been completed. It connects the lower station in Pontal d’Entreves (1300 metres above sea level (m a.s.l.)) with the intermediate station at Pavillon de Mont Frety (2160 m a.s.l.) and with the top station at Helbronner Peak (3460 m a.s.l.). A new underground link between Helbronner Peak and New Torino Refuge has also been built. The link is divided into two different sections: the first one, a 70 meters deep vertical pit created using the “Raise Boring”, descends underground from Helbronner Peak station; the second section, a 160 meters long sub horizontal tunnel, emerges at Torino Refuge. After a first introduction focused on the general layout of the project, the paper will present the geomechanical survey aimed to evaluate the effect of permafrost on the stability of intensely fractured granitic mass. Finally, it will describe the relevant issues related to the highest construction yard in Europe (3400 m a.s.l.): difficult conditions such as extremely cold and windy weather and restricted spaces. INTRODUCTION The new cable way connects the lower station in Pontal d’Entreves (1300 m a.s.l.), close to Courmayeur, with the top station at Helbronner Peak (3462 m a.s.l.) and its territory, as well as links with France and, through the French territory, with the town of Chamonix (1000 m a.s.l.). The overall layout is divided into two sections (as shown in Figure 1): the first section, “Pontal d’Entreves – Mont Frety”, has a length of 1700m, elevation differential of 886m, a capacity of 800 persons/hour and cable cars for 80 passengers; the second one, “Mont Frety – Punta Helbronner”, has a length of 2630m, elevation differential of 1276m, a capacity of 600 persons/hour, and cable cars for 75 passengers. The new system is designed for fully rotating cable cars moving at a constant rate of 9.0 m/s. The track requires constructing special cables supports, three for the first section and two for the second one."

"This year’s DFI Outstanding Project Award is for the design and construction of the foundation scheme for the largest cable-stayed bridge in the world. In 1993, Gefyra, SA (a French/Greek consortium led by VINCI of Paris, France) was awarded a €750 million ($1billion+ USD) Concession Contract to design, build, fi nance, operate and maintain a three-span cable-stayed suspension bridge connecting the Peloponnese, Greece’s southernmost peninsula, with the mainland across the Gulf of Corinth. The contract extends over a 42-year period, 7 years for design and construction and 35 years for operation. The project was fi nanced through a combination of public funds, private equity and bank loans. Alternative foundation concepts that were considered included traditional driven piles, deeply embedded caissons and soil improvement. PROJECT CHALLENGESThe extreme technical challenges faced included:??Weak foundation soils composed of soft alluvial deposits consisting of interbedded layers of granular and cohesive materials with thin layers and lenses of gravel and liquefi able sand pockets; rock is believed to be at a depth of 1,000 m (3,500 ft) or more.??A very deep seabed exceeding 60 m (200 ft).??The requirement to withstand the collision of 180,000-ton tankers traveling at 16 knots.??Maximum wind forces of 250 km/hour (155 mi/hour).??Design seismic forces corresponding to Richter magnitudes of 7.0+ with peak ground accelerations of 0.48 g at seabed.??Design tectonic movements of 2 m (7 ft) in any direction between any two adjacent bridge pier foundations/pylons.Considering subsurface conditions and local seismicity and water depths, foundation design and construction methods were the key drivers for this project. In large part, the success of the project is owed to the unprecedented partnering and collaboration between all partners involved fostered under the leadership of Jean Paul Teyssandier and Gilles De Maublanc of VINCI Group (France) who served as lead Concessionaire and General Contractor. The joint venture’s lead Greek partners were Elliniki Technodomiki/AKTOR and J&P/AVAX. Alain Pecker of Geodynamique et Structure (France) served as lead Geotechnical Consultant/ Designer while Buckland and Taylor (Canada) served as Design Checkers with Ralph Peck and Ricardo Dobry (U.S.) as Special Advisors on foundation issues, Langan International/Langan Engineering and Environmental Services P.C. (George E. Leventis, Gregory Biesiadecki and Diane Fiorelli) served as Technical Advisor on geotechnical, geodynamic and foundation/marine construction issues."

The pile foundation designer typically performs a subsurface exploration program and static pile capacity calculations before selecting a pile foundation type, length, and capacity. During construction, a pile installation criterion must be established to meet these design requirements. This installation criterion usually consists of a minimum penetration resistance or blow count to confirm pile capacity and may also include a minimum embedment requirement. This text will focus on use of wave equation analysis and dynamic measurements to meet design requirements. The Grundy coal field is in process of development, and this circular was written to describe the mining methods and practices in use in the mines now being worked in this field. In lieu of man-hour labor data for individual mines a consolidated sheet of mine costs, which includes expenses for labor, material, and power, is given for all mines. The costs are for a working day only, based on average daily production. Because the demand for coal is seasonal, the costs for idle days, which vary at each mine, have not been estimated. Approximate reserves of coal seams have been estimated from data and maps taken from Bulletin XVIII of the Virginia Geological Survey4/.

"INTRODUCTION High sulfate (SO4-2) levels often occur in MIW (mining influenced water) either as the result of oxidation of sulfide minerals exposed by mining activity or by deliberate addition – commonly by sulfuric acid (H2SO4) use in hydrometallurgical leaching activities. Increasing regulation of sulfate discharge is creating new pressure to treat or mitigate sulfate release to prevent its entry into the environment. Current treatments include precipitating as gypsum during lime treatment, filtration separation using membranes such as reverse osmosis and nanofiltration technology, and biological elimination via methods like constructed bioreactors. Blue Planet Strategies (BPS) focuses on improved resource utilization targeting electrolytic treatment and waste conversion into resources and has now demonstrated that its proprietary DEMET™ (Dynamic Electrolytic Metal Effluent Treatment) platform can also remove sulfate from target streams as a byproduct of its usual primary treatment focus points of metal species elimination and/or pH adjustment.[1-6] This powerful new capability can mitigate sulfate contamination and recover the sulfate in a useful and potentially saleable form as a byproduct of improved primary treatments focused on enhancing production or treating waste. This provides a new treatment opportunity and value proposition for lowering overall sulfate consumption/addition or creating new revenue to defray conventional treatment costs. The DEMET Alternative DEMET utilizes a patented electrolytic technology platform employing proprietary dynamic high surface area electrodes in innovative configurations to achieve a variety of novel selective chemistries. The merit of reduction-in-area as a criterion of quality in metals is shown to lie in its influence on breaking stress, but the virtue of elongation is not easy to find. In order to assess the value of elongation, either as a measure of quality or as a guide to design, it will be necessary to separate the overall de-formation occurring in tension tests from the localized deformation associated with localized reduction in area. The obstacles to a successful solution of this problem have been shown to be more formidable than is generally appreciated, and a new solution to the problem has been suggested. This solution involves a de-vice by which an electric circuit is broken when the particular value of strain is reached that is to be taken as the point of separation between general and localized deformation. The purpose of the development described in this report and as stated in the contract work statement is to "design, develop, fabricate, test and demonstrate, and deliver to the government permissible low cost cylindrical stress gauges and associated components capable of measuring change of stress as a function of time in underground coal mines. The cylindrical stress gauges shall be suitable for installation in bore holes". The technique adopted for measuring rock stress changes is to preload a steel cylinder diametrically across the sides of a 1-1/2 in diameter bore hole and detect deformation of the cylinder from stress changes in the rock, by means of a vibrating wire transducer. By calibration, changes in the period (time for one wire oscillation at the natural frequency) of a high tensioned wire stretched diametrically across the cylinder in the direction of load application are related to stress changes in the rock. To completely evaluate the stress field change in the plane of the bore hole, three gauges set at an angle to each other are required.
