The four basic types of electric motors -squirrel-cage, wound rotor, synchronous and D.C. -are de-scribed, with particular reference to speed-torque characteristics. The three classifications of squirrel-cage motors, C.E.M.A. B, C and D, are compared, and methods of selection for specific drives are outlined. Wound rotor and synchronous motors are covered from the viewpoint of construction details, methods of operation and control required. The application of these motors to crushers, conveyors and ball mills is described and reasons for their selection are given. The application of D.C. motors to haulage equipment and mine hoist drives is included, and the basic principles of a variable voltage drive are illustrated. Efforts have been made through-out to provide specific examples of motor selection, with particular reference to the mining industry. THIS paper will attempt to answer the question -"which motor should be used for a specific drive?" Although it is impossible to cover the complete subject of electric motor application here, we hope to give some idea of the types of motors available and why certain types are used on specific applications.

This paper, which describes mining practices at a mine in the Cave- in-Rock, Illinois, fluorspar district, is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts of the United States. Ore deposits in the southern Illinois-western Kentucky fluorspar dis- trict are of two general types (1) the flat-bedded, lenticular replacement and (2) the relatively narrow, rather steeply dipping fault or fissure filling. This paper describes production methods used and results obtained in mining one of the bedded lenticular ore bodies that are prevalent in the northeast portion of the district near Cave-in-Rock.

"The appropriate treatment of cyanide waste water is becoming an emerging issue because of the toxic residue and large quantity produced from gold processing plants. In the present article, we designed and operated a continuous biological cyanide treatment system using domestic sewage sludge and various microorganisms including a cyanide-producing and degrading bacterium, Chromobacterium violaceum. The synthetic wastewater containing 50 mg/L of cyanide was pumped continuously into the reactor at a flow rate of 500 mL/d for 21 days. When 50 mg/L of cyanide was fed, the cyanide concentration in the effluent of the reactor inoculated with activated sludge (S-50) decreased by 7.5 mg/L in the effluent. The other reactors did not show significant cyanide degradation and the reactor inoculated with C. violaceum showed increased cyanide concentration in the effluent. The microbial community in the reactors was analyzed by 16S rRNA-gene based pyrosequencing technique to investigate microbial response to cyanide addition and operation time. The microbial community analysis shows that the phylum Proteobacteria was detected in the reactors showing significant cyanide degradation (S-50), while Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes was dominant in the other reactors with very low cyanide degradation. Proteobacteria could not compete when the other phyla Firmicutes or Bacteroidetes were inoculated. This study shows the feasibility of the biological cyanide treatment system for gold processing plants and contributes new fundamental knowledge about the microbial community in the biological cyanide treatment system. INTRODUCTION Cyanidation has been widely used to recover gold from ores or secondary resources since first proposed by MacArthur and Forrest in 1888 (MacArthur et al., 1888) and it is used in many states of the USA, including Nevada, Arizona, California, Colorado, and Idaho (Laitos, 2012). Cyanide compounds are highly toxic and create serious problems for wildlife and water management (Solomonson, 1981; Donato et al., 2007). Furthermore, because many countries have imposed strict standards for cyanide discharge (USEPA, 1985), it is essential to develop a cost-effective and environmentally friendly technology for treating cyanide-containing wastewater."

"XPotential Products Inc. has developed technologies to convert auto shredder residues and other forms of plastic waste into useful products such as posts suitable for retaining walls and parking curbs. The technology is competitive provided low-cost plastic waste is available, and could have applications throughout the world. The paper describes the technology used and illustrates the various processing steps. Development of the TechnologyPresently, state-of-the-art auto shredding yields approximately 75% ferrous and non-ferrous metals and approximately 25% by weight of auto shredder residue (ASR). Advances in metal shredding and non-ferrous metal separation technologies turned XPotential Products Inc.’s attention to ASR as a potential revenue source, or at least a means to markedly reduce the cost of disposal. This abundance of nuisance ASR was, in the company’s view, a potential resource as derelict autos and white goods were similarly perceived 40 years ago. As owners of General Scrap & Car Shredder Ltd. in western Canada, XPotential faced significant disposal costs for four shredders. This journey began over 10 years ago and took many twists and turns until a final course of action was chosen. The recovery of the metallic portion of vehicles and white goods has reached technological maturity and attempts to add value are now achievable only in very small increments."

In this research, earlier developed information integration method and novel web technologies are applied to intensify infrastructure construction process control. The applied method uses semantic methods to integrate scattered information that is later on exploited by process management using state-of-the-art web technologies. The applied method and web technologies not only improve the process management situation awareness by integrated up-todate multi-source process data but also provide platform independent access and visualization tool for process data. Utilization of such technologies potentially lead on cost savings, make processes safer and also more environmentally friendly. The integration method also enables intelligent queries to the integrated data making possible to use machine based inferring to the data.

Of all the industrial clay minerals, attapulgite probably enjoys the widest variety of applications. A review published over three years ago by Haden and Schwint (18) cited some 80 individual uses, a list which continues to grow. In its near half-century of commercial life, attapulgite has received a generous share of research study and patent development effort, both on the part of producers as well as consumers. This work has been divided between understanding the mineral's structure or properties and applying it to specific end-uses. Naturally, information gained from the former has pointed toward opportunities in the latter. References of particular significance are cited throughout the text. Attapulgite's variety of uses derives from the unique three-dimensional structure and needle-shaped particle form of this crystalline hydrated magnesium aluminum silicate. Its inherent colloidal and sorptive properties are well known, and distinguish it from its sister clay minerals. Attapulgite is characterized by its high surface area, porosity, sorptivity, and decolorizing power. Its slips or slurries are viscous and thixotropic, however, unlike bentonite are not flocculated by electrolytes. In Table I are compared the general properties of attapulgite, bentonite, and kaolin. The properties in Table I are documented in greater detail by the wealth of scientific literature which has been published on the composition (14)(15), structure (6)(16), surface (16)(4)(22)(24), adsorption (31)(4)(5)(25), rheology (10-11)(12)(13)(26)(27)(32), plasticity (30) (31), and chemistry (23)(3)(7) of attapulgite. Attapulgite is the principal mineral constituent (70 to 80%) of attapulgite clay as it is commercially produced in the Georgia-Florida area of the United States. As mined, this clay also contains 10 to 1S% montmorillonite, sepiolite, and other clays; 4 to 8% quartz, and 1 to 5% calcite or dolomite. RISKGATE is an interactive online risk management system developed by the Minerals Industry Safety and Health Centre (MISHC; University of Queensland) to maximise health and safety performance in the mining industry through implementing continual improvement in management of major unwanted events. A comprehensive knowledge base has been captured for risk management of tyres, collisions, fires, isolation, strata underground, ground control open cut, explosions, explosives, manual tasks and slips/trips/falls. This will be extended to outburst, coal burst and bumps, interface displays and controls, tailings dams and inrush in 2013. RISKGATE presents substantive and leading edge controls to assist industry stakeholders in the design, management and reporting of organisational and regulatory compliance requirements. From a broader industry perspective, RISKGATE provides an environment for knowledge capture and knowledge exchange to drive innovation and best practice in the identification, assessment and management of risk. By capturing operational knowledge from industry experts, RISKGATE provides a cumulative corporate memory at a time of high personnel turnover in the coal industry. All major Australian mining companies are contributing topic experts to this broad industry initiative. In the first 24 months, nine coal mining companies nominated over 80 different experts who contributed over 400 days of individual time to the knowledge capture workshops. RISKGATE is the largest single Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) occupational health and safety (OHS) initiative to date.

The overall objective of this study is to contribute to the reduction of the quartz dust hazard in underground coal mines through a better under-standing of the sources and generation of airborne quartz dust. This research project has included extensive experiments in operating mines for (1) documenting the amount of respirable dust generated, (2) measuring the quartz levels in host materials and airborne dust, (3) analyzing the size consist of the mined product, and (4) establishing the relationship between these various parameters. The results of the study indicate that the amount of dust airborne is a very small fraction of the total (<15 µm) and respirable (<7 µm) dust generated. The quartz contents in the total and respirable airborne dust are generally higher than those in the host material. Quartz content increases with decreasing size of airborne dust. Also, it appears that rock breaks into a different size distribution than coal. The source of quartz for the airborne dust appears to be the roof and the floor material rather than the coal seam itself. No general relationship is found between the Hardgrove Grindability Index and either the quartz content in the airborne dust or the amount of respirable dust. Extended descriptions of the experimental design, the experiments, data analyses and results are presented in this volume. The raw data, the data management computer program and the sampling and safety plan are presented in Volume 2.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the conversion of nonmagnetic iron minerals to magnetic form through reduction Toasting operations. The primary objective was to obtain a concentrate that could be used as a direct shipping material for blast furnace consumption. Crude iron materials from the Steep Rock Lakes, Ontario, area were prepared into a blend of 8 parts siliceous ore, 3 parts pyritic ore, and 1 part tailings. Experimental work included laboratory reduction roasting tests, two continuous 10-day campaigns, and one 12-hour test all in a 34-inch by 36¬-foot rotary kiln. The objective of the project was achieved in producing an iron concentrate containing about 66 percent iron with over 90 percent iron recovery. Desirable operating conditions were developed in the kiln but optimum process variables were not completely established.

This inventory of the industrial mineral resources of the Pacific Northwest indicates that each of the States comprising this great region annually produces nonmetallic materials valued at mans million dollars. Commodities or their products that have a large, localized market predominate. These include Portland cement, sand and gravel, stone, clay, and lime. The region&apos;s output of magnesite, vermiculite, pumice, and diatomaceous earth is outstanding. The magnesite deposits of Stevens County, Wash., are the largest and most important in this country. Mast of the domestic vermiculite production is obtained from deposits in Lincoln County, Mont. Oregon and Idaho rank third and fourth, respectively, as domestic pumice producers. Production data for diatomaceous earth show Oregon second and Washington fourth among the producing States.

Historically, the silica content of zinc concentrates treated at Cominco&apos;s Trail Operations has been low. Silica in the roaster calcine seldom exceeded 1.5 per cent because of the low silica content of concentrate from Cominco&apos;s Pine Point mine. With the shutdown of Pine Point, alternate sources of concentrate were required and it was anticipated that calcines containing greater than two per cent silica (with excursions above three per cent) would have to be treated. Previous experience indicated that the existing leaching circuit could not tolerate such high levels. Therefore, a research program was undertaken to identify the key factors affecting silica precipitation; to compare different process alternatives; and to make recommendations for modifications to the existing plant. A project to modify and upgrade the leaching circuit has now been completed. Calcines with higher silica contents are successfully treated, but the upper limit of the circuit is unknown. The results of the research work will be discussed and the new leaching plant will be described. Recent operating results will also be presented.

"This paper demonstrates the selection of grinding circuit technology for a number of recent projects including discussion of the key drivers and the role of energy efficiency. Decreasing head grades combined with a strong and sustained increase in operating costs has forced miners to examine increased project size, increased equipment capacity and efficiency improvements in order to reduce their unit operating costs and improve overall project economics. Comminution energy consumption, safety and capital cost considerations play a critical role in the success of projects. This paper presents some key guidelines for a successful and cost effective comminution circuit design and includes a case study on three projects, outlining the issues and the drivers which led to the ultimate circuit selection and the critical role that energy efficiency played.IntroductionComminution circuits for minerals processing are selected based on their suitability and efficiency in reducing run-of-mine ore to the desired feed size for the downstream process. The input material (ore) properties and downstream process requirements are the key determinants and there are standard approaches for each circumstance.The minerals processing industry has been a fast adaptor of efficiency improvements based on increasing capacity of equipment (e.g. trucks, crushers, mills, pumps) but less successful in adapting radically new technologies that disrupt incumbent flowsheets or processes.The installed power of grinding mills has increased linearly over the past 25 years (Meka & Lane, 2010) and pumps and classification equipment have kept pace. The autogenous grinding (AG) and semi- autogenous grinding (SAG) mills displaced stage crushing as a dominant method of coarse rock breakage in many applications causing crusher manufactures to increase the capacity of cone crushers to meet the competitive demand.Examples of new comminution technology in the 20th and 21st centuries are the development and adoption of cyclone classification in the 1940s (Newtech, 2016), AG milling in the late 1950s, vertical grinding mills in the 1980s, high pressure grinding rolls (HPGRs) also in the 1980s and ultrafine milling technology in the 1990s (Meka & Lane, 2010)."

Mining coal by employing a method called longwall mining is gaining more and more popularity in the United states since it offers many advantages over the conventional deep mining methods. Those advantages are a higher productivity, an almost total extraction of the mineral since no pillars must be left behind for support, and an increase in safety since the personnel are protected by the shield supports and rarely have to work near unsupported, exposed root. However, on some longwalls, the dust levels liberated by various equipment such as belt conveyors, chain conveyors, crushers, longwall shearers, and moving shield supports can exceed the maximum permissible limits and therefore have an adverse effect on productivity. Many attempts have been made over the past years to reduce the dust liberation by changing designs, installing various types of sprays or scrubbers, treating the mine water with wetting agents, or even using foam to catch dust before it becomes airborne. In the year 1984, the Bureau of Mines awarded Eickhoff Corporation a contract to demonstrate a water-jet-assisted cutting system for the multiple purposes of reducing dust levels, improving bit consumption, and increasing material size. During the previous phases of this contract, various trials were conducted aimed to design, build, and test d shearer loader to meet the objective of the contract. In the early stages of the research program, it was expected to see a reduction in the overall power consumption of the machine due to the fact that the high-pressure water jet would pre-cut the mineral in front of the bit. This, in turn, would then reduce the bit wear. Since there is less cutting action performed by the bit, a reduction of the dust liberation and a reduction of product fines was sought.

Introduction Rock bolting is a general term that encompasses pinning, roof bolting, rib bolting, and cable bolting. Rock bolting contributes the highest nonproductive cost and is the most significant safety risk in mining today. Total installed bolt costs are now more than $20 per bolt. Rebolting or repair work doubles this. And bolting accidents account for about 30% of all fatal and nonfatal lost time accidents. It is only logical, then, for the mine operator to install the highest quality anchors possible. Every bolt on the market - tensioned, untensioned, full contact, or point anchor - has designed capabilities in axial, shear, and fluctuating ground conditions. Bolts will provide a designed support if material specifications and installation procedures fall within the manufacturer&apos;s recommendations. This also assumes that there are no unexpected geological or operational changes. Proper material specifications and installation procedures should guarantee the mine operator a quality anchor. To help assure this, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), the US Bureau of Mines (USBM), and the AMC Manufacturers group developed stringent ASTM materials standards. These govern mechanical point anchor bolts and bolts using threaded and nonthreaded rebar. There are also minimum standards that suppliers must comply with in the manufacture of frictional bolts. However, most frictional bolt standards are based on the manufacturer&apos;s own specifications. It would be impossible to set uniform regulations on frictional bolts. Each bolt provides support in a slightly different manner and thereby requires different material needs. Quality Control In any case, material quality can generally be assured through tight order specifications and periodic quality control checks. The problem with installing quality anchors does not solely lie with the material. It includes all the events that occur from the time a bolt leaves a manufacturer to the time it is installed. The anchoring ability of any major type bolt can be affected by transportation, storage, mechanical performance of installation equipment, installation demands of the operator, proper drilling accessories, and local geology. Table 1 and Fig. 1 document the negative events that can affect each bolt and the degree to which it can be affected. Drilling a hole of oversized diameter, for example, is an operator controlled factor. It will adversely affect most bolts. An over-sized diameter reduces, or even eliminates, the anchorage capability of a mechanical shell. It will reduce the support capacity of a split set to nearly nothing. And it will cause a partial or incomplete grouting around the resin bolt. Frequently, due to bit wear, holes are drilled undersized in diameter and may not be properly cleaned out. In this case, it will be difficult for the operator to push the mechanical shell into the hole, thereby causing him to drill another hole. In cases where the bolt is obviously not providing anchorage, operators will probably drill another hole and place another bolt. Rock Bolt Regulations It is the situations where a bolt is improperly installed in the hole, but gives the appearance of a good bolt, that are frightening. In fact, some safety officials and engineers believe that only 50% to 60% of installed bolts are working. These bolts cause irregular ground load transfers in other bolts and overload them. This causes hazardous situations and overstressing. It is these bolts that fail prematurely 200 to 255 mm (8 to 10 in.) behind the face and possibly contribute to the high accident rate. THE present truce in litigation between Western smelting and ranching interests gives opportunity for a summary of the results achieved by metallurgists in condensing fume and de-acidifying furnace-gases. In the absence of complete records of past experiments, there has been a good deal of unnecessary duplication of attempts and&apos; failures. Yet, especially under the recent policy of our large corporations, looking to the economic recovery of the values of by- and waste products, original and, in some cases, effective measures have been developed by American metallurgists. In the case of Bliss vs. the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., the Montana Supreme Court, recognizing the progressive efforts made to render the flue-gases innocuous, and the value to the community of the smelting company&apos;s operations, refused to hamper its work, and returned a verdict in favor of the defendant. In the trial, the experimental firms of the company in the so-called "affected region" were proved to be thriving perfectly, showing that immunity was guaranteed to vegetation and stock by the wide distribution of the sulphurous acid gas in the dry air of Montana. Indeed, L. S. Austin has proved that by the time the fume is 4,000 ft.. distant from the stack, the percentage of sulphurous acid has been diminished from 2.28 to 0.00045; and Angus Smith has shown that rain must contain 40 parts per million of free acid before vegetation is affected. The arsenic in the stack-gases is but a very small part of the original content of the ore, of which 80 per cent. and over is rejected in the concentrator and furnace waste-products or recovered in the flues. Canada has played a significant role in the international uranium industry for some three decades. Although there have been many challenges in the past, the future offers a more extensive range of problems and prospects as Canada moves to expand its activities in all aspects of the nuclear fuel cycle. World uranium demand could grow to an annual requirement of 500,000 tons U308 by the year 2000. A substantial fraction of this material is likely to come from Canada because the country&apos;s reserves and resources are large, and because of a favourable geological potential for future discoveries. There has been a long history of association between the producing industry and the federal government, and it has provided the foundation for existing national uranium policies. Close industry-government association will be maintained and developed in future because of the anticipated rapid growth of the industry and the consequent need for continual refinement of government policies relating to exploration, mining, processing and export of uranium.

Domestic bismuth supply was projected from production figures for the ores in which it occurs--copper, lead, zinc, and tungsten. Published and unpublished data concerning host ores were examined to determine bismuth reserves and resources, and mine production. Potential recoverable bismuth occurring with reserves and resources of copper, lead, and zinc was estimated to be 36.3 million pounds. A bismuth availability diagram was developed from quantity estimates and ratios of production cost to value for these host ores. Additional recoverable bismuth occurring with domestic tungsten reserves was estimated to be 1.5 million pounds. Domestic byproduct production of bismuth will approximate 1.3 million pounds annually by 1980. This quantity will provide about 37 percent of the 3.5-million-pound estimated requirement for that year. Known world supply of bismuth appears to be sufficient for world demand to the end of this century. The study indicates that bismuth reserves and potential resources in the rest of the world have not been adequately reported.

Introduction The Flin Flon mine of the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company, Limited, is on the interprovincial boundary between Manitoba and Saskatchewan, about four hundred miles north of the Canada-United States boundary. The orebodies are gold, silver, zinc, and copper replacement deposits occurring as irregular lenses of massive sulphides, arranged en echelon, and irregular masses of disseminated copper sulphides in chlorite. The country rocks are of Precambrian age, dominantly lava flows. Development of the Mine The mine is opened by two vertical main shafts- the North Main and South Main shafts- 3,800 feet apart. The North Main shaft has a depth of 2,210 feet and the South Main shaft is completed for stoping operations to the 3,250-foot level (see Figure 1). These shafts are connected by main haulages driven, on the footwall side of the orebodies, at 520-foot intervals down to the 2,210-foot level. No. 3 (subsidiary) shaft is on the footwall side of the orebodies at a point between the North Main and South Main shafts, 2,400 feet south of the former. It has a depth of 3,250 feet and connects with all main haulage levels- with both Main shafts down to the 2,210-foot level and with the South Main shaft on the 2,750-, 3,000-, and 3,250-foot levels. Other openings tO the mine include B North fan raise, the opening due to the recovery of the open pit sill pillar, and several back-fill raises.

"This paper sets out a simplified approach by which the practical foundation designer can undertake the relevant calculations to satisfy the requirements for deep foundation design in seismic areas. INTRODUCTIONConsideration of the effects of earthquakes and seismic loadings is an increasingly important aspect of modern foundation design, and most contemporary standards have a mandatory requirement for such consideration. For example, the Australian Piling Code, AS 2159-2009, states that “a pile shall be designed for adequate strength, stiffness and ductility under load combinations including earthquake design actions”. However, the methods by which such considerations can be undertaken are generally not set out in the standards, and many approaches have been utilized, ranging from very simplistic methods to extremely complex computer analyses. Accordingly, there appears to be scope for an approach that is soundly based but which is neither too simplistic nor too complex.Poulos (1989) has suggested that there are three categories of analysis and design, as follows:1. Category 1: empirical methods.2. Category 2: simplified but soundly-based methods.3. Category 3: more comprehensive methods that are soundly-based, and site-specific.The objective of this paper is to set out a systematic but simplified approach which falls into Category 2 above, and by which the foundation designer can undertake the relevant analyses to satisfy the foundation design requirements for seismic regions. Emphasis is placed on methods that do not require “black box” software or which employ complex soil models in which the physical meaning of the parameters is unclear."
