"Airborne respirable coal dust capture by water sprays or wet scrubbers has been studied and developed over many decades as an engineering control to reduce dust exposure in coal mines and combat coal worker pneumoconiosis. Empirical relationships and deterministic models for particular dust capture experiments have previously been devised to show the key parameters involved in airborne coal dust capture. Many of the results from these models show that the significant parameters related to airborne dust capture are water spray pressure, water quantity, water droplet size, relative water droplet-to-dust particle velocity, and total operating air pressure of the scrubber. However, many airborne dust capture efficiency relationships and models developed for particular experiments cannot be readily applied to forecast the dust collection efficiency of different spray and scrubber design configurations, which rely on several key dimensional engineering measures. This study examines engineering measures from previous water spray and wet scrubber experiments conducted by the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) to develop empirical models for wet collection of airborne dusts. A dimensionless empirical model developed for predicting airborne dust capture efficiency of water sprays and wet scrubbers is presented. IntroductionWater sprays have been one of the earliest mainstay engineering controls used to suppress respirable dust in underground coal mines. Some of the earliest reports of water spray usage on continuous mining machines indicated respirable coal mine dust reductions of 20 to 60 percent (Kobrick, 1970). Not long after the enactment of the 1969 Coal Mine Health and Safety Act, the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) and others conducted extensive research into water spray and wet scrubber systems to control respirable dust in coal mines. The primary aspects of water spray dust control included prewetting for dust prevention, localized ventilation redirection and airborne dust capture, which are summarized in handbooks or best-practices guides (Kost, Yingling and Mondics, 1981; Kissell, 2003; Colinet et al., 2010). Initially, underground studies were conducted to identify the primary sources of dust during the mining processes and effective dust controls (Courtney, Jayaraman and Behum, 1978; Jankowski and Organiscak, 1983). Laboratory research systematically studied ventilation and airborne dust capture effects of water sprays and scrubbers to improve their application in underground coal mines (Tomb, Emmerling and Kellner, 1972; Divers and Janosik, 1978, 1980; Grigal et al., 1982; Ruggieri et al., 1983; Jayaraman, Jankowski and Kissell, 1985; Volkwein, Ruggieri et al., 1985; Jayaraman, Schroeder and Kissell, 1986; Divers, Jankowski and Kelly, 1987; Jones and James, 1987)."

The use of high-efficiency electrical submersible pumps (ESPs) for large scale, open pit mine dewatering operations provides a good example of how technology, products and services from the oil and gas industry can be adapted to the mining industry. In this case, the mine is Goldcorp?s Peñasquito in the Zacatecas state of Mexico, at the Peñasco and Chile Colorado open pit deposits. The technology, products and services are from Schlumberger artificial lift (AL) and Schlumberger industrial water services (IWS). Overview of high-efficiency ESPs This section provides a brief description of the basic components, specifications and operating capacity ranges for the ESPs compared with traditional or conventional dewatering well pumps. This information helps to establish how ESPs provide certain functional and economic advantages over conventional pumps in a mine dewatering application. A schematic of a high-efficiency ESP in an oil and gas (O&G) application is shown in Fig. 1.

The recent shale gas revolution in the United States has led to the drilling of hundreds of unconventional shale gas wells in active and future coal reserves in traditional coal-mining regions of Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio. This paper summarizes the impact of a shale gas well breach on the mine ventilation system of an operating longwall panel. This study utilizes a 1:30 scaled Longwall Instrumented Aerodynamic Model (LIAM) to simulate a single-panel longwall operation. The LIAM will be utilized to identify flow pathways and distribution patterns of gas from breached gas well scenarios in an operating longwall in the Pittsburgh Coal Seam. Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) tracer gas is utilized to simulate a breached gas well. Preliminary findings suggest that the breached gas is diluted to regulatory levels and does not accumulate in the mine entries or in the longwall gob when the longwall panel is adequately ventilated. Overall, this study characterizes the potential interaction between shale gas wells and the mine environment in the event of a gas well breach, which provides critical information to the industry and regulatory agencies for improving safety, health, and welfare of miners.

A consumable-electrode arc-melting furnace was constructed at the Bureau of Mines Physical Metallurgy Laboratory, College Park, Md., for the production of uncontaminated titanium and titanium-alloy ingots. The furnace was designed to allow for evacuating to very low pressures and back filling with helium and argon mixtures for melting at or near atmospheric pressure. Vacuum melting at a few millimeters pressure was also used with a mixture of helium and argon gas sweeping the crucible. For research purposes a 25- to 30-pound ingot, 4 inches in diameter by 15 inches in length, was selected to provide, enough 1/2-inch plate for extensive tensile and impact testing of standard size specimens. Enough plate was also provided for testing by other Government laboratories. The homogeneity of several alloy ingots was determined, and excellent results were obtained. By using a large electrode-to-ingot-area ratio and high currents or power inputs to the arc furnace rather uniform ingots were routinely prepared.

The location and shape of potential failure surfaces in soil slopes were directly determined based on the stresses induced in the soil mass and the strength of the soil itself. Stress calculations were carried out by the finite element method with the Drucker-Prager nonlinear material model. The Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion and Mohr's circle stress analysis were then applied to the calculated stresses to determine the characteristics of the failure surface.

Crude or Crude Iron The name crude or crude iron is recommended for the iron produced from ore by the blast furnace. When necessary it can be specified as pig iron when in the form of pigs (usually cold), or as molten iron, commonly called hot metal to distinguish it from cold iron in pigs. The product of a direct process of making wrought or malleable iron from ore is not included.

Tills U.S. Bureau of Mines report briefly evaluates the advantages and disadvantages of basic dust control techniques presently used by U.S. coal preparation and mineral processing plants. These include ventilation, baghouse-type collectors, wet scrubbers, electrostatic precipitators, source control, sprays, good housekeeping, and personal protection devices. Two specific problems in these types of operations are also considered: dust collector system duct clogging, and control room dust control. Information provided in this report results from dust control research projects conducted by the Bureau at various coal preparation and mineral processing plants over the past decade to reduce workers' dust exposure. These studies indicate that plant ventilation systems normally provide the most cost effective method for dust control. Baghouses and scrubbers were also effective in specific applications, and examples of each are given. In extreme dust conditions, personal protection devices, such as respirators or the dust helmet, can also be highly cost effective.

The requirement for a paradigm shift with regard to materials movement in search of low-cost production has not just happened by chance but, rather, has been driven by agents of change that include mining companies, consultants, governments and equipment suppliers. During the past 100 years of mining, surface mining technology has involved humans with hand tools, humans with machinery and unmanned automated equipment. In the past 50 years, surface mining technology has evolved and now takes the form of trucks and loaders (TL), in-pit-crushing conveying (IPCC) and autonomous haulage equipment (AHS).

Introduction The Hedley mine, perhaps better known as- the Nickel Plate mine, is one of the outstanding properties of southern British Columbia. Discovered in 1898 by Woollison and Arundell, prospectors, the property was bonded in 1899 to M. K. Rodgers for the Marcus Daly Estate, of Butte, and development was started the same year. From the high grade of the ore outcrop, and its colour, due to oxidation of the arsenopyrite, it was not difficult to open up and trace the showing. The Nickel Plate ore-shoot, which apparently had been easy to follow on surface, was more difficult to trace underground. In 1903, prospecting on an adjoining property, the Sunnyside, showed commercial ore at surface, but it was only after two years' work that the ore-body was defined and shipments started. From this property, $1,200,000 have been taken out. Prospecting was also carried on on the IXL, Climax, Copper Cliff, Mound, Bulldog, Exchange, Silver Plate, Gold Plate, and other properties, all of which had surface showings, but up to date only the Nickel Plate, Iron Duke, Morning, and Sunnyside have produced commercial ore. In 1904, the Bulldog looked like a very promising mine, but it failed to make good. In 1905, the Sunnyside No. 1 was in the limelight, but it also failed to make the grade. In 1906, an outcrop on the Sunnyside No. 3 looked interesting. Subsequent work. on this claim produced $840,000, and at the same time ore which yielded $400,000 was mined from the Sunnyside No. 4. In 1908, the Nickel Plate ore-body entered a lean zone and, as the diamond drill failed to give satisfactory results, the Daly Estate, after making a profit of $1,151,000, sold the property to the Hedley Gold Mining Company, Limited, for $760,000, retaining, however, a large interest.

A1though the expanding Eltran1 configuration has been used in induced polarization exploration for several years, there has been little application of this method to straight resistivity problems. A comparison of results of resistivity exploration by this technique versus those obtained from Wenner configuration surveys reveals a number of advantages in interpretative resolution as well as in field operation. The application of electrical resistivity to ground-water exploration is well known.= In the past a major portion of this work has been accomplished by use of one or more variations of a technique employing the Wenner3 electrode configuration. With the introduction of the frequency domain technique of induced polarization measurements, used primarily in the exploration for disseminated sulfide deposits, there arose the need for an electrode configuration by which potentials could be measured externally to the current electrode spread in order to minimize coupling between current sending and potential receiving circuits. It was also deemed desirable that the configuration would provide information laterally along profile as well as with depth. To reach these objectives the expanding dipole-dipole configuration (which probably first was used in the electrical transient method of exploration and from which the name 'Eltran' was derived) has been adapted to induced polarization exploration. From evidence made available during the investigation, it was concluded that the first of a series of explosions occurred at 1:15 to 1:20 p.m. September 21, 1951, in an underground vault that housed pressure regulators on the gas-distribution lines that served Brighten. This explosion damaged the pressure regulators and permitted high-pressure gas to enter the distributing mains and individual-service lines. As a part of the gas-distribution system was not provided with means for protection against such excessive pressures, gas gained access to the interiors of many residences in this area and caused a series of disastrous explosions and fires, which took place during a period of approximately 2 hours after the initial explosion in the pressure-regulator vault. Two persons were killed in the first explosion in a residence, and a third person died of a heart attack attributed to the excitement that prevailed during the explosions and fires, Twenty-three persons were listed as injured. Forty-one residences were either destroyed or damaged - 11 by explosion and the remainder by fires, which developed as a result of gas leakage into residences. Fifteen residences were listed as "completely down" or "gutted." Unofficial estimates of property damage ranged from $1,000,000 to $1,500,000. In view of observations made and information obtained during the investigation, recommendations are presented in this report relative to the natural-gas distribution system in Brighton, which may be helpful in the prevention of similar accidents in this and other communities.

"Although ore sorting in mining is not a new concept, sensor-based sorting has failed to gain broad acceptance due to perceived challenges with the technology. In order to gain wider applications, this research focuses on treating waste rock and low-grade ore to identify and test appropriate sensors and to evaluate the response. Results showed that amenability of rocks to sensor-based ore sorting is both sensor and ore specific. It was also observed that the efficiency (recovery) of sorting is directly influenced by the degree of heterogeneity of the rocks. The overall outcome showed that with the right sensor, several of the materials tested are amenable to sensor-based ore sorting. Mining companies could benefit from multiple economic and design impacts, such as lower energy cost, lower transportation costs, higher metal recoveries and smaller footprints that lead to more sustainable mining. This paper will focus on the effects of heterogeneity of rocks on sorting potential and efficiency.IntroductionSensor-based ore sorting has been attracting more attention since the pressure for effective resource extraction and management has increased. An urge to make most of the current deposits, and to make the low-grade deposits economic to mine has ushered the technology to find new ways to overcome the new challenges. No matter the terminology used, such as coarse beneificiation, waste rejection, particle or bulk sorting, the purpose of sensor-based ore sorting is to remove low-grade rocks before the comminution circuit, increasing the feed head grade and quality while reducing the energy costs related to comminution.Despite nominal advantages, there have always been some concerns that have impeded the intorduction and acceptance of the technology. One of the most important shortcomings of ore sorting is their capability, or capacity, to keep up with the high-tonnage mining. Some other issues that have been mentioned as drawbacks to sorting include installation cost of such devices, feed preparation for effiecient sorting along with accuracy of sorting and probability of false negatives (Manouchehri, 2003)."

"The demand for minerals and metals is increasing. Head grades of ore bodies are dropping. Remaining ores are becoming finer grained, more complex, and more logistically challenging. Mineral processing – in particular comminution – already consumes a huge amount of energy. But in 20 years’ time, it will require about six times as much energy as today to meet the world’s mineral demand.Unless we do something different.As minerals professionals, it is our job to find that “something different”. The world is relying on us. Of course, we must look for new breakthrough technologies and techniques. We must find them, and we will find them – most likely in surprising areas.But what if we also already know how to make 30-50% improvements to efficiency? Just by using existing technologies, by applying modern analytical techniques, by custom designing our plants, by applying manufacturing principles, by breaking down our management silos between disciplines.The thing is, industry professionals already know this. Yet – in spite of a lot of intelligent people trying very hard – we just can’t seem to make it happen.This discussion considers why, despite our best efforts, we don’t get the best out of what we already have. Why we are wasting energy and money. Once we understand why, we can set about unlocking that value and improving industry productivity and energy efficiency. We will discuss the role that professionals and volunteer professional organisations like CMP and CEEC can play in catalysing the changes."

The latter half of the 20th century has seen the proliferation of a series of codes to address commodity needs which were brought about by rapidly advancing technologies and the globalization of markets and consumerism. This paper addresses the specific needs and the origin of this surge and presents these codes in the context in which they were developed. It also compares the main codes or groups of codes and elaborates upon their strengths and weaknesses. Three main categories of codes are identified, namely codes for reporting to international agencies, codes addressing government needs and, finally, codes for the investors and the stock market. Codes governed by international agencies usually relate to strategic commodities which have highly specialized fields of usage such as nuclear power generation where international cooperationis eventually the only viable approach for both the development of technologies and their applications. Codes for reporting to governments address the necessity of each state to exploit its mineral potential profitably and to secure the preservation of wealth for future generations. Reporting to investors is experiencing a considerable popularity as of late because of globalization in mining and the growing need for outside financing of mining projects, whose capital requirements are getting out of reach for the average mid-cap mining company. All these codes have advantages and shortcomings dictated by the specific circumstances under which they were developed, therefore necessitating the definition and implementation of some kind of international standard whereby investments and the spread of information across political boundaries would be facilitated. Though none of these codes might ever become international in the true sense of the word because of significantly different legislations at national level, a step that would greatly contribute to the cross-border disclosure of information would be the reciprocal recognition of competent persons by the major mining countries, including China and Russia. It is also becoming essential that financial institutions and investors be properly advised on mining projects by reporting reserves and resources in a transparent and responsible way with the relevant public disclosures being compiled by professionals who take full responsibility for their submissions. There are many honor stories about aluminum in the marine environment and many are not based on facts, so they are myths. Myths must be addressed before progress can be made. This paper attempts to dispel the myths and state the facts. A common perception is that aluminum ships cost significantly more than steel ships. This paper illustrates that even though the cost of the aluminum structure is over 50% more than the steel structure, an "equivalent" aluminum naval ship can be built within 7% of the acquisition price of a steel ship. This is possible because of the cascading benefits of the aluminum ship's significantly lighter weight. Aluminum ships also have a life-cycle cost advantage over steel ships because of reduced maintenance and fuel cost savings.

As a portion of a general program for the synthesis of hard materials, a method was sought by which the hardness and density of tungsten carbide (WC)-cobalt compacts could be increased. It was demonstrated by Cotter that these improvements in quality could be made by employing an electric-resistance sintering process in which heat and pressure are applied simultaneously to presintered compacts composed of powdered tungsten carbide and cobalt. This conclusion was based on tests of material prepared by Cotter on welding equipment in use at the U. S. Naval Engineering Experiment Station, Annapolis, Md., and at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, N. Y. Rockwell-hardness tests made at Norris and core-drilling tests made at the Mount Weather Station of the Bureau of Mines indicated that, for some purposes, carbide material made by this process might be superior to the chemically analogous commercial products prepared by ordinary sintering methods. A program to develop optimum conditions for the electric-resistance sintering of tungsten carbide-cobalt compacts was initiated. The program was followed by a systematic evaluation of the hardness and density of compacts prepared by this method along with a series of carbide compacts furnished by various manufacturers. This paper presents a description of the electric-resistance sintering of tungsten carbide-cobalt compacts and the results of comparative physical tests.

The Ortiz Mine is an open pit-heap leach gold operation in central New Mexico processing about 3,100 tonnes (3,400 short tons) per day. It is the initial mining property in the United States developed by Gold Fields Mining Corporation, a subsidiary of Consolidated Gold Fields, PLC. This paper discusses the evolution of the present mining and ore control procedures as adaptions to the characteristics of both the rock being mined and the orebody, and with respect to the fact that mining is done by a contractor.

By March 2001, shrinking global markets, reduced consumer spending and declines in domestic manufacturing and industrial output ended the longest economic expansion in US history and pushed the nation’s economy into its first recession in a decade. Aggravated by the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, the recession led to large reductions in the domestic production of processed mineral materials. Some of the most significant production declines in the US metals industry were registered by aluminum, copper and steel producers. They faced strong foreign competition, higher energy costs and lower prices for their products. However, homebuilding and other domestic construction sectors — major users of nonmetallic mineral products such as cement, brick, glass and stone — remained strong enough to help raise the output of industrial mineral materials slightly above previous year levels. A strong US dollar continued to weaken the competitive stance of US metal and nonmetallic mineral materials companies alike against foreign producers in markets at home and abroad.

It is not offered as a precedent of what should be contained in a joint venture agreement (“JVA”), the “proper” sequence of Articles, or a complete listing of the contents of joint venture agreements generally. Introduction The International Nickel Company have been pioneers in mine rescue work in Ontario. Following the fire in the Hollinger mine in the spring of 1928, the Company purchased ten self-contained oxygen breathing outfits, ten all-service gas masks, an oxygen high-pressure pump, life line, inhalator, ten cap-lamps with batteries, and a complete stock of spare and accessory parts. An instructor from the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Pittsburgh, came to the Creighton mine for one week and trained twenty men in the use and limitations of all equipment. Monthly training courses were commenced in the fall, and have continued to the present time. Of the original twenty men trained, ten are still on the Creighton mine rescue teams. In the meantime, and as an aftermath of the Hollinger fire, the Work-men's Compensation Board of Ontario and the Ontario Department of Mines established a central mine rescue station at Timmins. This was completed in the spring of 1930. It was then decided, in view of the great expansion in mine development in the Sudbury district, to build and equip a similar station to serve all the mines there, namely, Creighton, Frood, Garson, Falconbridge, Sudbury Basin, and Errington. An extensive survey was made and a central location selected opposite the Frood mine. The International Nickel Company donated a site, and the station was completed in the fall of 1930. The station is a two-storey brick building, 27 ft. by 47 ft., with a large garage adjoining it. The ground floor is used for equipment and for training the crews. On the second floor are living quarters for the superintendent and his family. The garage houses a closed truck, in which all necessary equipment can be taken to any desired point for training purposes or for actual mine rescue work, if and when necessary. The garage is also used as a gas room, where the men are trained in an irrespirable atmosphere. A gas-tight observation window between it and the training room enables the superintendent to see and direct the men undergoing training, weight exercisers and other devices being used.
