An important problem in the efficient conduct of industry is that of helping the individual employee to formulate an attitude toward his work which will result in the reduction of accidents and the promotion of safety. Perhaps nowhere is the need greater for this type of Psychological training of carefully selected men than at oil refineries whore both the raw materials and the finished products are highly inflammable and explosive in nature. However, the refinery organization usually is well adapted to educational safety activities - much more so than in the producing, pipe line, and marketing departments where the personnel are more or less scattered; but the same general principles of conduct hold true in any industrial organization. This problem of directing the attention of the employees to their specific tasks or helping them to control and frequently eliminate hazards engendered by adverse mental attitude or emotion is met most satisfactorily by carefully selecting applicants and placing them at jobs for which their ability, best fits them. The subsequent training of these carefully selected employees to assure their most effective work in accident prevention mu be accomplished in a variety of ways, such as by personal supervision and instruction, inspections, drills, and by the studied use of well thought out safety pamphlets and posters. This procedure is simple in outline and not original in scope, yet the importance of selecting and training the personnel has, not been generally accepted by the petroleum industry until recent years. In 1926, the Bureau of Mines, while making a study of accidents in the petroleum industry, found that medical examinations of prospective employees were not receiving unanimous endorsement by all companies, and the point was stressed that the selection and allocation of employees was a problem requiring serious consideration in the petroleum industry.

What is the definition of a successful construction or development project? It could be described in many ways: a project that performs as designed; a project completed on time, a project completed within budget. The title of our talk today is, "The Advantages of Applying Design/Build -Construction Management to the Mining Industry." As our talk develops, you will see that rather than tell you how to apply this concept, we will discuss the advantages and details of Design/Build so that you can independently apply the concept. Design/Build is not new, and it cannot be universally applied. It has, however, within the past ten years, carved a specific and substantial place in the overall construction -development market. The reasons for its rather recent rise to considerable prominence as a concept is due, in part, to the increasing urgency of gaining productive access of a production facility and, in part, to the inherent advantages of the concept's economics--and they are considerable. If the Design/Build concept of contracting were fully understood, it would, without exception, be the favored way for private industry to contract for its new construction and development as well as renovation work. The basic advantages are: earliest possible access and completion at the lowest cost. Design/Build is often equated and compared to "fast track" or "turnkey" methods of construction. The Design/Build concept can, in fact, be both of these or neither. "Fast track", in and 6f itself, implies that the project will be phased construction, that is to say, it will be built quickly; whereas I "turnkey" is a measure of the completeness of the project, usually meaning essentially that the

THE approximate status of education in ore dressing in 1871 is reflected by Rossiter W. Raymond in an article written at that time presenting the curricula and descriptions of the laboratories at the various mining schools in the United States. For the most part, the curricula in which ore dressing was taught were for mining engineering. They comprised courses in geology, mining, and pyrometallurgy about equal in point or credit weights; a short course in ore dressing, and a somewhat longer course in assaying; and courses in surveying, hydraulics, power, and strength of materials-all superimposed on a broad foundation of physics, chemistry, and mathematics. Some curricula contained a fair content of the humanities. Then, as now, the emphasis on fundamentals was greater in the older colleges and universities. The report on the Columbia School of Mines, then relatively young, emphasized that a large percentage of its students were college graduates. "Since the beginning of the petroleum industry in 1839, up to within two or three years ago, these has been a dearch of engineers who have had the fundamental technical training also sufficient practical experience so that they could compete with practical men. Need for Technical Investigations in Industry: As in the early stages of the mining industry, the petroleum industry has been rather slow in realizing the need for technical assistance and investigators in the development and production of oil lands. The rapid increase in consumption, however, during the past few years has accentuated this need more than anything else could have done. When it is realized that our production cannot longer keep pace with the demand, it is easily understood why it is imperative that be instituted which will tend to conserve and prolong the supply of oil from the fields now known. It is interesting to note from preliminary production figure given cut by the U. S. Geological Survey, for the year 1919, that the United States produced about 430,000,000 barrels, an increase of 22,000,000 or 6 per cent over 1918 production and also there was imported, chiefly from Mexico, a little over 52,000,000 barrels, making a total of 430,000,000 barrels, to satisfy the trade demand in the United States of which almost 6,000,000 barrels was exported. Stocks were not materially increased.Other significant facts regarding our petroleum industry, are that just recently the U. S. Shipping Board in soliciting bids for 24,000,000 barrels of fad oil to meet prospective needs, received bids for only 1,500,000 barrels at prizes ranging from 75 to 90 per cent higher than was paid last year. One large company on the Pacific Coast has stopped its export trade, and has notified consumers,of gas-engine distillate that they will no longer make deliveries of this product. This will materially affect the farmer, in many instances, through his use of the truck and tractor."

The Torpedo Copper mine in the Organ Mining District, Dona Ana County, N. Mex., was discovered In 1899. Production was begun immediately and continued until 1907. Since 1907 very little ore has been produced, although Many individuals and companies have been interested in the property at one time or another. Approximately 6,621 feet of diamond-core had been completed on the property before 1949. The results from some of this drilling were unsatisfactory because of the poor core recovery. In addition to its investigation of the Torpedo ore deposits, attention was given by the Bureau of Mines to obtaining better core recovery through the use of special equipment and techniques. This project was begun October 3, 1949, and was completed April 30, 1950. Four diamond-drill holes totaling 2,140.5 feet, which includes 18.2 feet of overlap in a deflected hole, were drilled. All drilling was done with a Government-owned hydraulic-feed drill with some special rods and core barrels, in addition to the usual equipment. The over-all core recovery was 89.5 percent. Omitting the drilling in overburden where little or no core was desired, the recovery was 94.6 percent. Core recovery in the ore zones averaged 95.2 percent. This paper describes the location, the general features of the area, the geology, the Bureau of Mines procedures, and the results attained by these procedures.

About 15 years ago the debate on the reliability of sampling procedures for agricultural food and feed commodities was initiated by a few brave scientists who questioned the representativeness of what, at the time, were routine sampling procedures established exclusively on the basis of tradition and practical feasibility. Over time several national and international organisations contributed to the discussion, developing standards and publishing papers either to underline the fact that sampling is always a source of error, in itself, which cannot be overlooked, or to minimise the relevance of sampling on the basis of argumentations linked to time and money limitations. The latter dominated, but is nevertheless impossible to accept from both a scientific and a responsible management perspective. Here the author presents an historical overview of these past 15 years, illustrating the most controversial issues, reporting major achievements in food/feed sampling, highlighting milestones, as well as unresolved problems that still need the attention and contribution from the sampling community. The need to incorporate Theory of Sampling (TOS) into food/feed safety assessment (pre-market), as well as into food/feed safety monitoring (post-market) has recently been highlighted, and the practical applicability of TOS to base food/feed safety decisions on representative sampling, has been explored and documented via concrete examples of risk analysis in different areas of food/feed industrial production chains. Now it is time to move forward and ensure that TOS is fully integrated into the well-established Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) / World Health Organization (WHO) risk assessment approach, in order to guarantee a transparent and correct universal frame for risk assessment and the subsequent management decision-making process. WCSB8 offers the ideal platform to explore the best way to do so, switching from a theoretical discussion of correct sampling principles for food and feed agricultural commodities to practical recommendations in the interest of consumers, worldwide. These 15 years have also been a personal journey of interesting dimensions, indeed a veritable roller-coaster ride in-and-out of the scientific, technological, industrial and (last but not least) regulatory worlds. The start was WCSB2 in 2004, when I flew to Australia to discover if in other areas sampling had been identified as an unavoidable issue and, if so, what the solution was. There, I found a good travel companion who today is still on my side, to assemble the puzzle and explore how to shape the future, to concretely answer to the 15 years’ quest for proper sampling in the assessment and monitoring of food/feed safety.CITATION:Paoletti, C, 2017. Between 2005 and 2021, a NIOSH internal review showed that haul trucks were involved in 54 incidents at surface mines in the United States. Haul truck collision warning and avoidance systems (CXS) can assist in preventing accidents at surface mines. CXS use technologies to detect people or objects and alarm to alert haul truck operators. Robust testing can help ensure that they detect objects without excessive false positive alarms. Testing and validation would increase confidence in and encourage implementation of a CXS. Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) reviewed documents related to the evaluation and validation of CXS with two objectives: (1) to identify methods and parameters used to evaluate detection performance and (2) to identify gaps in CXS test methods and in detection performance. Stakeholders can use the findings from this research to guide implementation of CXS to improve safety at surface mines.

"INTRODUCTION The pilot-mill concentrator at Boulder City, which has a nominal capacity of 40 tons per day, was planned and built to investigate further the beneficiation of domestic manganese ores that have been concentrated successfully in the ore-dressing laboratory. As milling of manganese ores in general is a new field, it is necessary to prove the success of laboratory processes by means of large-scale operations employing standard milling equipment, and thus to obtain engineering and metallurgical data essential to designing and operation of full-scale concentrating mills.The first ore tested in the pilot plant was the Three Kids Annex manganese ore from the Las Vegas Wash area 15 miles southeast of Las Vegas, Nev. The deposit was worked for its high-grade ores during the First World War From 1930 to 1939, 4,500 feet of diamond drilling was completed by a private company. Diamond drilling started by the Bureau of Mines in November 1940 and completed in July 1941 aggregated 6,600 feet. Exploration by the private company and the Bureau outlined reserves of about 1,000,000 tons of ore assaying plus 28 percent manganese. A much larger tonnage of lower-grade ore also was outlined by the drilling.Because of its physical nature, the Three Kids Annex ore had long proved unamenable to concentration by ore-dressing methods. The ore is a mixture of manganese oxides (wad) filling the pores and to some extent replacing a silt composed of very fine grains of volcanic tuff, quartz, feldspars, other silicates, and clay. Some gypsum occurs as fillings along fracture planes. The ore is light and very porous. Upon wetting, it disintegrates into granular but friable particles and a large amount of slime. It is these characteristics that make the ore so difficult to concentrate."

Demand for nonfuel minerals depends on the overall state of the economy, which steadily improved each quarter in 1984. New housing starts rose to 1.8 million units. Automakers turned out about 15% more cars (7.8 million) and 30% more trucks (3.1 million) than in 1983. Nevertheless, many domestic mineral operations experienced difficulties in 1984. This resulted from import competition greater use of newer engineered materials, emphasis on multi-unit housing and downsizing of motor vehicles. About 15% of our energy was imported. This in cluded $36 billion worth of crude oil and $22 billion in refined products This added significantly to the overall merchandise trade deficit of $12; billion. On the bright side for mining, coal production rose 14% to 810 Mt (890 mil lion st). Three-fourths o: the coal was burned to generate electricity and more than half of our electricity was derived from coal-burning plants. With the exception of a few large-bulk, low-value raw minerals, most minerals move relatively freely in world trade. The strong dollar encouraged imports and made exporting more difficult. Consequently, our nonfuel minerals trade deficit rose 60% to $19 billion, reflecting imports of $39 billion and exports of $20 billion. There were increased pressures from some major segments of the minerals industry for some form of import protection. But President Reagan said, "Our goal is a system of free and fair trade in goods, services, and capital. We will work toward this goal through both bilateral and multilateral trading agreements." The US minerals industry consists of domestic mines, concentrators, smelters, refineries, mineral manufacturing plants, and recyclers. It also includes many wholly- or partially-owned operations in many parts of the world, providing employment and income for US citizens and others as well. Compared with 1983, the value of US raw nonfuel mineral output rose 8%, to $23 billion. The $253 billion worth of goods processed from this crude mineral output was a 14% increase. Major Metals Raw steel production - a major indicator of both material use and mineral production-rose 10%, to 84 Mt (93 million st). This stimulated a 36% rise in domestic iron ore production, to 52 Mt (57 million st), about 98% pelletized. Iron ore imports rose 44%, to 14 Mt (15 million st). Despite the increase of steel production, output remained well below levels of just a few years ago. For example, 1984 production was still 23% less than in 1981. Raw steelmaking capacity remained steady at 122 Mt (135 million st). The industry continued to cite steel imports as a major reason for low domestic capacity. In December, pacts with seven leading steel exporting nations were announced. This is an effort to reduce import penetration to about 18.5% of the domestic market. Domestic producers of bulk ferroalloys of chromium, manganese, and silicon operated at about 50% capacity. The US mined no manganese or chromium. Only a small quantity of ferronickel was produced from domestic laterite mining in Oregon. Molybdenum production, at 45 kt (49,500 st), rose threefold. "Two of the greatest challenges we face in managing our aging infrastructure are to perform accurate condition assessments and to realistically predict the risk of non-action. The aim of this paper is to discuss common pitfalls we face in performing accurate condition assessments of our aging infrastructure using the case history of a recent near miss at the Lake Manatee Dam in Central Florida. The dam was placed into service in 1967 and was inspected every couple of years by dam safety engineers beginning in 1978. Although there was substantial and repeated evidence of a serious piping and internal erosion problem in each of these inspections, the problem was overlooked by most of the inspection teams. In 2012, the inspection team concluded that: “the Lake Manatee Reservoir Dam is well maintained and is in very good overall condition.” However, in 2013 a new team inspected the dam from an entirely different perspective, identified potentially serious conditions, performed an integration of the historical inspection data and concluded that: 1) the Lake Manatee Dam was in a severely distressed state; and, 2) without an immediate intervention there was a high risk of an uncontrolled release of the reservoir most likely following a large rainfall event and prolonged opening of the service spillway. This case history highlights human factors contributing to the near miss including group think and focusing on changes from prior inspections. The integration of historical inspection data is recommended for managing our aging infrastructure.INTRODUCTIONThe engineering analytical techniques most appropriate for assessing an aging infrastructure can be distinct from those used for the original design. To adequately manage our aging infrastructure it is necessary to change our perspective from anticipating failure mechanisms and designing to prevent them to assessing condition, detecting the presence of potential failure mechanisms, and assessing the potential risks. In many circumstances the failure mechanisms currently active may not have been anticipated by the original design team.We have developed a substantial body of experience in the design of our infrastructure. Full scale and laboratory testing coupled with the application of scientific principles to model behavior has led to many powerful design tools. The continued serviceability of our infrastructure as its elements reach their design lives stands as a legacy to our profession. However, under the sustained effect of limited resources for maintenance and rehabilitation parts of our infrastructure are in a highly deteriorated state. Unfortunately, the condition of some of these has not been properly assessed. This paper focuses on the Lake Manatee Dam in Central Florida and the process used to clearly identify its highly deteriorated state. While there are many factors that contributed to the lack of a proper assessment of its condition, the focus herein will be on human factors and in particular how “Group Think”, “Aversion to Bad News”, and “Condition Assessments Based on Changes to Prior Condition” may have contributed to not properly identifying the development of a serious failure mechanism."

The Morenci In-pit Crusher and Conveyor System has been designed with safe production and cost savings in mind. Large open pit mines around the world have been installing semi-mobile crushers and linking them with a pit conveyor system to lower unit cost. At Morenci two 60/89 in. gyratory crushers are incorporated into the semi-mobile crushing plants. The ore is reduced to -8 in. and transported out of the mine on a 60 in. steel cable belt. This paper includes an overview of the Morenci In-pit Crusher and Conveyor System from the drawing board to open pit installation and finally a discussion on operating and repair considerations.

Central Norseman Gold Corporation was established in 1935 and has been mining on the Norseman field in Western Australia since then. It is Australia’s longest continuously operating gold mining operation at nearly 80 years, although it has had its periodic challenges in the intervening years.Over the last 40 years, a series of open pit mines around the Dundas Goldfield have supplied lower cost mill feed to the Phoenix Mill at Norseman from time to time but this has largely come to an end for the foreseeable future. Now that underground ore sources are once again the principal mill feed, there are several challenges to be met for an ongoing profitable operation.During the last 20 years, there have been three different owners and this has affected the manner in which the operations were managed quite significantly. These differing approaches are contrasted and examined in some detail from both the operational and financial aspects.Planning of a downsized operation to ensure sustainable profitability in the future in a mining environment where there has rarely been more than two to four years of reserves ahead of the mill for planning purposes has been a significant challenge. Enterprise unmanned traffic management (E-UTM) is a holistic system concept evolving from technological developments in radio frequency (RF), where dynamic tracking can be added into current and emerging platforms. This is done through inexpensive RF sensors capable of real-time and cooperative, non-GPS tracking enabling digital visualization of assets, including unmanned aerial systems (UAS). The RF sensors are low in size, weight and power (SWaP), creating efficiencies in energy and material consumption while transmitting positions in real time and at long ranges. Multiple UAS and other unmanned vehicles can be visualized for risk mitigation in operations, thus enabling mine management to have better decision-making capabilities in the current and future mosaic of mine operations.

Given a promising claim and the required financial backing to develop it, the first problem that confronts the mine operator is usually the selection of the necessary compressed air plant. The size and type of drive are questions that naturally follow, the former being determined largely by the amount of money available and the speed with which it is desired to carry on the programme of development. The type of drive, such as electric motor, steam or oil-engine, depends on local conditions and has an important bearing on the cost of operations. ns. Few prospective mine operators are fortunate enough to locate claims within the service radius of electric power-lines, although this is more likely to happen nowadays than formerly. In the majority of cases, however, some other form of prime mover is necessary. When wood or coal are available at moderate cost, a small steam-driven plant is usually chosen. Such plants are often arranged so that they can be converted to electric-drive should future developments at any time make this desirable. Many plants of this type are installed in northern Ontario mines. When wood or coal are costly or difficult to transport, oil-engine driven mining plants have many advantages in their favor, and are now quite commonly used. Oil in some locali-ties is considerably cheaper than wood or coal, and is much easier to transport over bad roads.

Today, with the necessity of timely, on-budget and high quality completion of projects, proper use of construction equipment is essential to ensure project success. Construction equipment places a large monetary burden on the project and if not utilized efficiently, it can result in economic losses. Cranes are one of the most important and expensive operational devices on construction sites. They play a central role, and often activities that rely on crane services fall on the project?s critical path. Currently, material-handling scheduling is done by the crane operator or by an on-duty superintendent using his/hers personal judgment, making the process manual and timeconsuming. Thus, developing an optimal schedule, which considers different dynamic constraints in construction job site, may not be possible based on the current practice. This leads to longer operation times and a negative impact on project cost. This paper presents the latest results of an ongoing study, which aims to design and implement a nearreal time crane operation decision support system to be utilized directly by the crane operator or as an aid for the superintendent in scheduling optimal operation services. This system has several advantages such as maximizing the efficiency of crane operations, guaranteeing the best operation possible to reduce the crane?s travel time, reducing crews and equipment idle time, and minimizing the dependence on subjective human judgments.

The history of the use of calcium aluminates in mining is discussed including a review of very rapid hardening concretes, anchoring using cement capsules and pumped ground control systems. Specific reference is made to the long term performance of highly abrasion resistant orepass lining in South Africa and the use of rapid hardening materials for a range of applications in Australian coal mine where water infiltration creates difficulties or where rapid repair or return to service is required. The topics covered in detail are, high strength abrasion resistant concretes with a 20 year, 30 million ton ore pass life. Rapid reinstatement of wet and worn roadways using mineral dewatering and rapid roadway rebuild solutions, all in I maintenance shift. The different applications are illustrated using examples from operating mines.

This paper presents the results of laboratory and pilot plant investigations for the development of efficient methods of beneficiating hematite ores from the Krivoi Rog, Kursk Magnetic Anomoly, Olenogorsk, and other localities. The tests included gravity, magnetic (in a high intensity field), flota¬tion, and magnetizing roasting methods. It was possible to develop efficient beneficiation methods depending on the mineral composition of the ore and degree of dissemination of ore and gangue minerals. The paper shows the relationship between the iron silicate and quartz content of the ore and the technologic indices of the various beneficiation methods. Some of the conclusions based on these investigations and the technical and economic computations related to the cost of one ton of pig iron produced from concentrates obtained by the various beneficiation methods are: 1. If the hematite ore is not disseminated uniformly, it is expedient to use a combined gravity and flotation process. Ore particles up to 50 am. in size are beneficiated by gravity (heavy suspension, jigging, and others) and yield a lump concentrate. The middlings from this process are recrushed and floated; 2. Finely disseminated hematite ores, containing small quantities (less than 5 percent) of iron silicates, are most effectively beneficiated by flotation. Anionic (sulphate soap, tall oil emulsion with various foam depressors) as well as cationic collectors may be used. Depending on the mineral and chemical composition of the ore, it is possible to obtain concentrates containing up to 65 percent iron with an extraction up to 94 percent; 3. Finely disseminated, mixed hematite-magnetite ores may be beneficiated by flotation or a magnetic separation-flotation process; 4. Finely disseminated hematite ores, containing large quantities of iron silicates and earthy hematite ores are most efficiently beneficiated by the magnetizing roasting method. This method will yield concentrates containing up to 68 percent iron with extractions up to 90 percent. Although beneficiation by the magnetizing roasting process is costly, it will nonetheless, when employed on this type of ore, yield the least expensive pig iron.

This paper gives an overview of the various strands of postgraduate and undergraduate training offered in the Department of Chemical Engineering at UCT. Since 2003 the Department is offering a formal postgraduate MSc programme in hydrometallurgical engineering aimed especially at graduate work-based engineers, with 5 weeks of intensive course work plus a research dissertation on a work-related project. This programme has now run 5 times over the years and produced some 20 degrees. The paper reflects on the experiences with running the course, especially the difficulties experienced with supervising industry-based external students. Furthermore, through the Department a graduate training program is offered for all junior metallurgists at a major South African minerals company. This 2-year program, which is currently on its 12th cohort, offers 1 or 2 week intensive blocks of course work alternating with longer stints where the candidates are based at various operations. Although primarily focussed on minerals processing, it has a significant element of hydrometallurgy in it and in recent years an advanced hydrometallurgy stream has been introduced. The paper reflects on the development of the program over the years, the benefits it has provided to the company as well as some of the challenges that remain. Finally the paper gives an overview of hydrometallurgy related undergraduate and research-only postgraduate MSc and PhD projects at the university. Some emphasis is placed on the recently launched South African Minerals and Metals Research Initiative (SAMMRI), a joint government-industry programme to support university-based research in the area of applied metallurgy.

Image-based remote sensing of rock fragmentation in mining and quarry applications essentially treats each rock in the image as a data object in order to determine the rock size distribution. An obvious challenge after rock delineation in a 2D image is the scale of the delineated objects. Conventionally, either objects of known size are placed in the scene or parallel laser pointer are used, both making some assumptions, to calculate scaling factors. These assumptions are applied to the whole scene rather than sensing individual rock attributes.
