WHILE the attention of all engineering branches is focused today on changes and improvements in the several curricula, we are concerned here with the many questions arising in industry and college concerning the preparation for the petroleum engineering profession. The succession of problems confronting the petroleum engineer demands a degree of versatility not ordinarily encountered in other professions. As a consequence, the student cannot acquire mastery of all the several engineering branches represented in field practice, and as an alternative, he has learned to appreciate the value of thorough training in the basic or fundamental sciences as a preliminary foundation for professional work. While our attention is directed primarily to the training of engineers in educational institutions, it is necessary that the ultimate education of the professional engineer be kept in mind. It is apparent that his success as an engineer is limited not only by his educational and job experience, but by his native endowments: mentality, personality and health. The engineer's lack of job experiences often proves as much a handicap as the lack of adequate college training. If the final product proves to be satisfactory, both industry and technical institutions are to be congratulated. However, if the product is found wanting, the one most responsible should be apprehended. FITNESS FOR PROFESSION For the most part, students of engineering colleges have had their interests in applied science awakened at a relatively early age. Many of them entered college as a convenient means of acquiring a technical education, but undoubtedly would have had better prospects in a shorter program offered by institutions of noncollege grade. The activating motive of practical interest is also strong in students suitable for college training, but in many cases an intellectual interest must be awakened in order that it may survive graduation. Numerous engineers believe that this progressive process of selection and determination of career aims is one of the essential services rendered by the engineering colleges. Industrialists, who are more interested in quality than quantity of petroleum engineering graduates, have pointed out the good that should result if more empha¬sis were given to the work of eliminating the misfits. They also point out the protective measures that have been taken by other professions for the betterment of professional standards. Mention has been made of the beneficial results to be obtained by collective determination of the market for the products of engineering schools, particularly in that the students unsuited to the profession would have an opportunity to prepare themselves for employment more suited to their personalities and other qualifications. This paper describing the mining practices at the Old Dominion mine, Globe, Ariz., is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various minim districts in the United States. The Old Dominion mine is situated in the eastern port of the Globe-Miami district, about 1-1/2 miles north from the center of the town of Globe. An average of nearly: 1,200 tons per day was mined during 1928. The prevent production is about 1,500 tons per day; of this amount,, approximately 100 tons is direct-smelting ore that is shipped to the smelter at Miami and 1,400 tons milling ore which is treated in the company?s concentrator at Globe. About 600 men are employed at the mine.

The site selected for this furnace was, at the time of commencing work, October, 1872, entirely covered by the navigable waters of Lake Champlain. A coffer-dam was first built of cribs of round timber filled with stone, forming three sides, while the shore answered for the fourth. Considerable excavating was done with a steam-dredge, a hole being left for it to pass out. The opening was then built up, and the cribbing banked up with blue clay from the bottom of the lake, to render it water-tight and the dam pumped out; the remainder of the excavating being done by hand. All of the foundations, with the exception of the elevator-tower, and fifteen feet of the east side of hot blast, rest on the Potsdam sandstone, which forms the shore line, dipping into the lake at an angle of fifteen degrees. Volcanogenic massive basemetal sulphide and gold mineralisation of predominantly low sulphidation style has been located within Lower Tertiary basaltic and felsic volcanic and sedimentary sequences at Ufuo, in the Left April River area, northwest Papua New Guinea. The four discrete massive sulphide bodies, which have been so far identified, occur within a 3 +5 km area situated within a north west trending structural corridor. The sulphide bodies are all localised on the margins of the corridor where the bounding major through going faults are transected by regional faults. Mineralisation is characterised by massive pyrite-bornite-sphalerite-barite-quartz-anhydrite deposition with later galena-tennantite-chalcopyrite. Minor phases include enargite, goldfieldite and bismuth sulfosalts. Jasperoidal silica lenses and bioturbated sediments are closely associated with the massive sulphides. Basemetal sulphide mineralisation is also closely associated with phyllic-style quartz-sericite- altered host rocks underlying the massive sulphide lenses. This mineralised phyllic alteration is localised to fractures, veins and breccias that cross-cut propylitic style alteration characterised by quartz, epidote, chlorite, adularia and zeolite. The mineralised system possesses several hydrothermal features consistent with a copper-rich submarine exhalative volcanic hosted massive sulphide (VHMS) system, ie discrete massive sulphide bodies with abundant barite, associated jasperoidal silica and bioturbated sediments. However, exploratory drilling of the alteration zone underlying each of the massive sulphide bodies has not identified a well-defined zoned alteration pipe that is characteristic of such systems. The alteration is also similar to that of a porphyry-related low sulphidation system in which phyllic alteration has overprinted a regional propylitic style assemblage. The presence of sporadic enargite (and ?tennantite/tetrahedrite) suggest there were intermittent pulses of acid fluids in the system probably derived from exsolved magmatic SO2 which flowed directly to the surface along reactivated faults. The occurrence of tellurium and bismuth minerals is also consistent with a magmatic contribution to the metalliferous hydrothermal fluids. It is proposed that the VHMS orebodies are the products of submarine exhalative deposition generated by a crystallising magma emplaced within crust of on-going tectonism. Ufuo mineralisation is similar to many VHMS deposits elsewhere in that it is unclear whether the metals are derived from the magma directly, or via seawater leaching of the wallrock. Additional studies such as oxygen isotope analysis may assist in resolving this issue. If the metals are shown to be of direct magmatic origin then there may be good prospects for discovering economic-grade porphyry-related mineralisation at depth below the massive sulphide deposits.

For all the attention given to mining activities in Central and South America, Mexico, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea, it is sometimes easy to forget the activities taking place in one of North America's most important and largely untapped regions -Alaska. The Alaskan minerals industry employed about 3,406 people during 1995. That is a 23% increase from - - 1994. It also contributed about $719.8 million to the state's economy during 1995, a 10% increase. During the past few years, Alaska has seen significant increases in exploration and mining activity. Fairbanks Mining, an arm of Cyprus Amax, began producing gold during 1996 at its Fort Knox Mine, as did Nevada Goldfields' Nixon Fork gold mine. Kennecott's Greens Creek lead-silver-gold mine also reopened and USMX began operations at its Illinois Creek gold mine. In addition, several impressive exploration projects were under way in Alaska. Placer Dome reported good results at Donlin Creek project in southwest Alaska. Likewise, Newmont Exploration is getting serious about its True North gold project. And Nerox is nearing production at its Jonesville coal project in Alaska's interior. In November, about 400 miners gathered in Anchor- age for the Alaska Miners Convention. Throughout the conference and exhibition, attendees listened to updates on these precious- and base-metal and coal exploration and mining operations. They also learned that the state wants more miners to head north and help develop its natural resources. Alaska is ripe for a smelter The mining industry -Alaska's miners in particular - has a powerful ally in Sen. Frank Murkowski (R-AK). He is the chairman of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee. During his luncheon address, Murkowski said it appears that it is economically feasible to extend the Alaska Railroad to northwest Alaska, taking advantage of the large coal and hard-rock mineral tracts in the Ambler mining district. He also renewed his push for building a major smelter in Alaska to process ore that would come from the Ambler mining district. Murkowski believes that Alaska's economy can be expanded by extending the railroad from Nenana to the Point Lay coal fields to open coal development. Along the way, the railroad would pass through the Ambler district, helping to develop the hard-rock deposits. An outgrowth of this additional mineral development, Murkowski said, could be a new smelter in Alaska. It could use power from the Tyee hydroelectric facility near Wrangell or from the Makushin geothermal project near Unalaska. Either site, he added, offers access to plentiful, relatively low-cost power, at tidewater to facilitate ore deliveries to the Pacific Rim. The Congressional Research Service has determined that there are enough mineral deposits and coal beds to make it possible to finance the extended railroad, he said. The 1,200-km (744- mile) rail extension would cost about $4.2 billion. The North Slope of Alaska contains up to 3.6 Tt (4 trillion st) of coal, Murkowski said, that contains less than 0.25% of sulfur and less than 4% moisture. It aver- ages 12,300 Btu in heat content. "That is a tremendous resource," he said. The Ambler mining district, meanwhile, has at least eight identifiable hard-rock deposits, Murkowski continued. These contain zinc, lead, copper, nickel, chromium, tin, barite, gold and silver. "All eight of these can generate ore concentrates at rates similar to Red Dog's cur- rent 725 ktla (800,000 stpy)" of zinc, he said.

"IntroductionA process for production of magnesium by carbothermal reduction was developed at Padentheirm, Austria, by the Austro Americanische Magnesit Corporation& an independent investigation of this and other processes was started in 1937 by the Bureau of Mines at Pullman, Wash., with the cooperation of Washington State College. 10/ A preliminary study of the Radentheirm pro¬cess, as revealed by the meager information then available, demonstrated the following two major disadvantages,The use of hydrogen for shock cooling requires an enormous volume of gas - about 1,000 cubic feet for condensing each pound of metal as a pyrophoric dust which must be completely separated from this gas. Then if the gas is to be recycled for repeated use, the CO produced by the reduction reaction must be separated from the hydrogen. These separations are costly from the standpoint of equipment and operation. 11/The condensate is an impure, pyrophoric metal powder that must be purified and converted to coherent form. This is accomplished by distillation or sublimation of the metal. Distillation on a large scale involves difficulties inherent in the high boiling point (1,107° C.) and the chemical activity of the metal. To avoid these difficulties, the metal is sublimed at 600° C. and of very low pressure. This is quite easily carried out as a batch operation but is a costly procedure. A continuous sublimation process has not been accompli shed."

The use of sulfur combined with either sand or waste copper tailings was investigated by the Bureau of Mines as a substitute for a good graded aggregate in asphalt paving materials. The research was part of a utilization program to develop meaningful uses for a projected oversupply of sulfur. Many sections of the country lack good aggregate for paving but do have available sources of sands and sulfur. The development of paving mixtures of desert sands or tailings with sulfur and asphalt was accomplished in the laboratory and tested by laying small paving test sections. Three types of material were studied for use with the sulfur and asphalt. They were (1) a concrete sand similar in gradation to river or beach sands, (2) desert blow sand, and (3) waste copper tailings. Desert blow sand and waste copper tailings are much finer than concrete sand. Mix designs were established for the three types of materials, sulfur, and asphalt used in the paving materials. The best mix designs were as follows, in weight-percent: 80.5 concrete sand, 13.5 sulfur, and 6 asphalt; and 77 either blow sand or tailings, 17 sulfur, and 6 asphalt. Small-scale testing showed that these mixtures were suitable paving materials but would require specialized equipment for transporting and laying. The chemical modification of sulfur to obtain properties that would allow placement of these materials with normal asphalt paving equipment was studied. Results indicate that reacting sulfur with dicyclopentadiene before adding it to the paving mixture was effective in modifying the sand-sulfur-asphalt paving so it could be placed and rolled with conventional equipment.

The increasing emphasis on environmental issues has crucial importance in mining projects, hence in tailings dams. Their water barrier needs a two-fold environmental assessment: the environmental impact caused by construction activities, and the environmental impact over time. Unfortunately, tailings dams’ failures have great and long-lasting environmental consequences, and as mining sites become bigger and tailings dams higher, the risk of failures may increase. Furthermore, since these dams are mostly constructed over many years, design parameters/materials may change, the engineers may change, and since cost is a driving parameter, less attention may be given to quality control and monitoring. Geomembrane water barriers mitigate such impacts.

Like all chains, iron ore values chains are only as strong as their weakest link, which in ore processing is often the humble chute. While mechanically the simplest element in the iron ore flow sheet, chutes are often the most problematic and regularly the major cause of unscheduled downtime. Chute designs have remained static for decades, despite the extra demands being placed on them by grade reduction, which impacts chutes in three ways viz: 1. Higher volumetric rates as infeed increases to meet production targets. 2. Higher moisture content as mining goes below water table. 3. Stickier properties as the dilution phase is often clay based. While there is no shortage of ideas and the geometry options are infinite, the fact is that chute design has not kept pace with grade decline and has remained essentially unchanged. One reason cited for this lack of innovation is the difficulty evaluating and de-risking designs. While the power of computers running Discrete Element Method (DEM) models has advanced, the models themselves still need to be ‘calibrated’ with the dynamic properties of the ore. Flow properties commonly measured for bin design are useful for static situations only and were never intended to predict dynamic behaviour as in chutes, a critical qualification lost in the mists of time. So while they always produce a colourful and reassuring animation, DEM models informed by static ore properties often result in wildly inaccurate real world predictions. Responding to this low success rate, many operators are now utilising physical modelling to help reduce risk and avoid the consequences of having an underperforming chute in their value chain. Physical testing, in a dimensionless scale-down of the proposed system (bulk material and chute geometry), addresses the shortcoming of mathematical models designs and when used in combination with DEM is the best option. In the ideal world, the focus of chute modelling should be innovative design concepts aimed at addressing future needs, however in reality the focus is nearly always on modifications to installed chutes that are underperforming even today. This situation can be traced back to design procedures which if informed at all, are based static ore properties. As an industry, we need to break this cycle and become more proactive, which means addressing flaws in the current design process. In 30 years of providing modelling support to the industry, I have looking at hundreds of underperforming chutes in the iron ore industry. This practical experience has led to a unique and unbiased perspective on chute design and their performance in the real world. The knowledge presented in this paper can not only be used to help avoid baked-in problems now, but also help guide and evaluate designs so we can deal with the challenges of our low-grade future.

Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) evaluated the impact of potential shale gas well breaches and subsequent gas inflow on selected mine ventilation systems of operating longwall panels using a 1:30 scaled Longwall Instrumented Aerodynamic Model (LIAM) and Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) as a tracer gas. A series of tests were performed at 340, 400, and 500 cfm inflow levels utilizing different mine ventilation scenarios. Results suggest that the breached gas can be diluted to meet statutory levels when the longwall panel is adequately ventilated. The results enhance the understanding of the gas inflow and mine ventilation system interaction and provide critical information to the industry and regulatory agencies for improving miners’ safety.

"INTRODUCTION Cobalt is an essential metal in the normal industrial ac¬tivity of the United States. Being an important constituent of high-speed steels and other cutting-tool materials, it becomes of critically essential importance during periods of national emergency. 3/ The Presidential order of December 20, 1940, included cobalt among other essential commodities that could be exported only under license. The Executive order 4/ listed cobalt metal, cobalt oxide, and alloys containing more than 5 per¬cent cobalt as being within the licensing requirements.There was no domestic marketed production of, cobalt products from 1931 until 1940 when the Pyrites Co. 5/ produced some cobalt oxide. The major portion of the domestic cobalt requirements has been obtained from Northern Rhodesia, the Belgian Congo, and French Morocco. 6/ The uncertainty of sea transportation from those sources of supply demanded that steps be taken to obtain from domestic raw materials an adequate supply of cobalt for use in the materials required for production of indispensable machined war metal products. In connection with the national policy for attaining self-sufficiency of strategic and critical materials, the Bureau of Mines, Boulder City, Nev., Experiment Station initiated studies to recover cobalt from the low-grade oxidized cobalt deposits in the Goodsprings district, Nevada. Hewett 7/ reported occurrence of cobalt specifically in the Blue Jay, Columbia, Copper Chief, and Highline mines and generally over a widespread area in the district."

Having so many norms and technical content of legislation to deal with is a problem that an explo-sives engineer has to face, especially when working at an international level. Each country has its own norms and legislation, sometimes even each other region or state, as if the physics of explo-sions, rock, concrete, and masonry characteristics would change across the borders. Both norms and laws are frequently out of date, being mainly developed at the beginning of the previous century and adjusted, piece by piece, to a technical and political context that is constantly changing, with adjustment being frequently adopted in a hurry, due to a problem arising such as that of internation-al terrorism. Sometime also, norms are not harmonized with those they intend to amend, so required explanations and new adjustments lead to a vicious circle that increases confusion, complexity and depresses the explosive industry.

The Hill 50 Gold Mine is situated at Boogardie, 3 miles on a bearing of 295 degrees from; Mount Magnet township. Mount Magnet lies 300 miles north-north-east of Perth, Western Australia (Fig. 1).The older workings of the mine may be identified with those of Sirdar, Gold Mining Lease 696M The Sirdar had been worked before 1902 though no records remain, and irom 1903 to 1912 about a thousana tons at a grade of 6' 2 dwt. was extracted annually; by the end of 1918 6,225 oz. of gold had been obtained from the milling of 17,852 tons of ore. In view of these yields, and the length and width of the lode, this mine was early recognized as one of the most promising in the district. From 1919 to 1924 the ground,including G.M.L. 1282M, was held as Mt. Zion G.M.L. 1183M.The Hill 50 Gold Mine N.L. company took up the workings as Hill 50 G.M.L. 1282M in 1934 and have continued operations to the date of writing. To the end of 1956 the Hill 50 Gold Mine had yielded 982,106 tons of ore for a return of 448,'602 fine oz. of gold.The mine has been described by: J utson (1915), Feldtmann (1920), Johnson (1949), and Finucane (1953). Finucane (1953) details the mine structure to a depth of 414 ft. The author was able to examine the mine to a depth of 1305 ft. Detailed main level mapping to the 1060 level and a detailed surface examination have revealed aspects of the structure which were previously obscure.

HOMESTAKE'S mining methods today are of necessity controlled to a considerable extent by that which has been done in the past. This may be shown by the fact that our two main operating shafts now, the B. & M. and Ellison, were begun in 1878 and 1896 respectively, so that-the loca-tions of shafts, locations of all the drifts on the upper levels, and a great deal of sloping was done before any of us now connected with the mine had anything to do- with it. Anything that I may say is not to be construed as criticism of those who have gone before for it would be a sad commentary indeed on us if we had not learned something from their experience. WILLIAM CHURCH was one of the founders and the first president of the Detroit Copper Mining Co. and was the first man to interest the Phelps Dodge company in the possibilities of the Morenci district, in the '70's. One rather interesting story concerning him is told by James Colquhoun, at one time president of the Arizona Copper Co., in his "History of the Clifton-Morenci Mining District." It seems that a geologist visited the Detroit company's mines and gave Alec McLean, then mine superintendent, quite a lesson on the proper mineralogical terms for what he saw in passing. Later, McLean handed out a few of them to Mr. Church as they walked through the mine on a tour of inspection. The latter had even less regard for a geologist than he did for sulphide ore, which meant little indeed, for in those days the rich ore was all oxidized, and there was no money in the sulphides. So Church was completely unimpressed by the geological and mineralogical terms that McLean had acquired from the visiting geologist. Church turned on him and warned him that so long as he was a member of his staff he was to understand that there were only two kinds of rock in his mines-the one was smelting ore and the other was waste rock, and he was not to forget it.

The investigation to evaluate the reserves of coking coal in the United States suitable for the manufacture of metallurgical coke is being made by the Bureau of Mines in three parts: (1) To estimate known (measured plus indicated) recoverable reserves of all coking coal; (2) to upgrade marginal coals through effective preparation; and (3) to study the carbonizing properties of coals and coal blends not now widely used for metallurgical coke making. This is the sixth of a series of reports giving the results of studies by counties under part (1) of the investigation. (See appendix.) This report covers Fayette County, Pa., which comprises the Uniontown and parts of the Brownsville, Connellsville, Donegal, Waynesburg, Masontown, and Confluence, Pa., Morgantown and Bruceton, W. Va., and Accident, Md., quadrangles. (See fig. 1.) A short resume of the chemical and carbonizing properties of the coals ar.9 included. Data on the coal beds in this county were obtained from mining companies, land companies, individual landowners, and other sources of authentic information.

"In-situ processes have emerged as new and promising techniques for metal matrix composite fabrication. They offer significant technical and economic advantages over conventional processing. One of the in-situ processing routes that have been used is reactive free sintering of a mixture of powder reactants. However, materials synthesised via this route are always porous because of density differences between reactants and products. An example are the porous Al/(TiB2+Ah03) MMCs obtained by heating powder mixtures of Al+ Ti02+B with Ti02 and B in stoichiometric ratios for forming TiB2• In this study, porous Al/(TiB2+Ah03) composites were further processed by hot-pressing at temperatures above 600°C. This processing cycle was designed so that the composites could be densified. Furthermore, the reaction kinetics of the in-situ processing are studied by means of DSC analysis measured at different heating rates. The activation energies of the three intermediate steps that are involved in the reactive processing for preparing AV(TiB2+Alz03) MMCs are determined to be 923 kJ/mole, 241 kJ/mole and 235 kJ/mole respectively.XRD proved that the hot-pressed products consist of Al, TiB2 and Al203- Properties of the products are assessed by microstructural characterisation (LOM, SEM and EDS), microhardness, Young's modulus and bending tests. The results show that good microstructures, elastic properties and strengths, as well as acceptable ductilities were achieved. For the composition 79.74wt% Al-15.95wt% Ti0z-4.31wt% B, after the reactive free-sintering and hot-pressing cycles, Young's modulus is 105 GPa, bending strength is 509 MPa and maximum strain is 5.0%; for composition 88.73wt% Al-8.87wt% Ti0z-2.40wt% B, they are 89 GPa, 311 MPa and 8.2% respectively. It can be seen that the properties of products can be tailored by adjusting the relative amounts of reactants in green samples. Furthermore, for comparison reasons, Al and a binary system Al-Ti02 were identically processed as the ternary systems. Their microstructures and properties were studied."

Recirculation is the major concern associated with the utilization of booster fans. In controlled recirculation, a portion of the return air is purposely mixed with the intake air and the mixture is directed towards a working district, while the air quantity and gas concentrations in the air are closely monitored and managed. The objectives of this study were to determine the gas concentration in intake and return airways during controlled recirculation, and to determine the recirculation fraction for multiple headings. Experiments were conducted in a laboratory model to determine the effect of controlled recirculation on the quality of air circulated through the working faces. Preliminary results showed that recirculation is beneficial to ventilation planning because it reduces the build-up of air contaminants at the working faces and reduces the overall power consumptions. The experimental results were used to quantify the recirculation fraction and to calibrate ventilation models of the laboratory model. These models are used to simulate the controlled recirculation and to predict the gas concentrations in multiple headings.
