[Health and safety hazards from contamination of the atmosphere in places frequented by persons depend to a considerable extent on whether the contaminating agent possesses sense-perceptive properties which will give warning of its presence before it '.an create harmful conditions. If a distinct and easily recognized warning is given in advance of harmful conditions, hazards ace mitigated, but if warning properties are inadequate or absent, the hazards are augmented. When evaluating the hazard presented by a potentially harmful substance used under conditions of possible escape into the air of places frequented by persons, it is therefore necessary to consider the warning properties of the substance along with ether pertinent information such as toxicity, inflammability, physical properties, and mode of use. If the contaminating agent inherently lacks warning; properties it may be possible to impart them by adding to the hazardous substance a small quantity of a relatively harmless substance which has a high warning intensity.]

"The efficiency by which an applied load is transmitted from the matrix to reinforcing fibers in a composite depends on the fiber/matrix adhesion strength. This is determined as the interfacial shear strength, IFSS, which may be measured by means of pullout tests that measure the force needed to pull a single fiber out of a block of material simulating the composite matrix. Different techniques are used to perform pullout tests. The objective of this work was to characterize the IFSS of sisal fibers embedded in epoxy matrix through the determination of the critical length pullout curves. As the main results, a relatively small critical length was found for the sisal fiber/epoxy pullout specimens, corresponding to a weaker IFSS. This was compared to other results applying different pullout techniques. Scanning electron microscopy observation identified the mechanism responsible for the weak sisal fiber adhesion to the epoxy matrix.IntroductionSynthetic fiber reinforced composites is today one of the most successful class of materials with increasing industrial applications from house appliances to large airplanes like the modem Airbus 380. However, environmental issues are revealing serious drawbacks related to the fabrication, use and post-use discard of these composites. For instance, the thermoset polymer composite reinforced with E-glass fiber, known as ""fiberglass"" has an energy-intensive fabrication associated with a surplus emission of C02, which is responsible for global warming [1]. Moreover, the glass fiber is considered toxic and also causes long term pollution after being discarded."

Several new hydrometallurgical plants have been built in the past years, new processes and equipment as well as advanced process control systems are being used to deal with the increasing requirements of safety, quality and production. Plant Information Management Systems are now being recognized as a key infrastructure component of the plant, giving the management, the operators, process engineers, finance, maintenance, and regulatory agencies an integrated view of the operation and providing the links for the (increasingly) multidisciplinary organization. This paper reviews several implementations of Plant Information Systems; real time performance management infrastructure examples are reviewed as a key component of business strategies, such as Mine to Port Planning and Supervision, Metallurgical Mass Balances, Solvent Extraction Composition Statistical Process Control, methods to minimize organic losses, reduce variable costs and to improve metal extraction. Several examples are provided to illustrate how companies are using the real time and historical information from assets and metallurgical processes to enable and empower people to improve the operations quality, safety and throughput, as well as continuous improvement and innovation initiatives.

"ABSTRACTSeveral case studies are presented on the use of seismic techniques to map active structures, evaluate changes in stress levels, and identify the conditions leading to large magnitude seismic events and the generation of rock-bursts in Canadian mines. The results suggest that microseismicity can be used to identify the orientation of active fractures; define regions of relatively high and low stress, and those most likely to host a rockburst; determine the role of local stress on observed shear failures; and identify the path of stress transfer associated with the remote triggering of rockbursts. Additionally, the conditions leading to rock-bursts can be characterized by a significant increase in the clustering of microseismic events along the fault plane orientation of an impending event, and an increase in the effective stress levels. It is concluded that the analysis of microseismicity provides the means for remotely monitoring rock mass behaviour as a result of mining."

THE Sub-province of Benguet is in the North Central part of the Island of Luzon. Baguio, the capital, is situated on a piateau 5000 ft. above sea level, and is the main health resort of the Philippines. It is rapidly becoming the favorite resort for the China Coast as well, and has many miles of beautiful, curving drives with nearly every pine-covered knoll surmounted by a summer home. The United States Army has a recreation post here, known as Camp John Hay, with a well-equipped hospital, and there is a Country Club with a good golf course adjacent. The weather during the winter months and until late spring is ideal. The business center consists mainly of Chinese and Japanese stores, several hotels, and a large public market, in which are displayed all of the vegetables of the temperate zone, which are flown near Baguio, and many tropical and other products brought up from below. This district is reached from the Coastal Plain either by the old Benguet road built in 1904 by the United States Government, or by the Naguilian road, built some years later. The former is now a toll road, with a line of stages operating over it to and from Des Mortes in connection with the government-owned rail- road. Auto travel from Manila is also along this road, the trip from Manila to Baguio requiring about seven hours, following up the great valley north of Manila for nearly 150 miles to the lower end of the Benguet road, and thence to Baguio, 25 miles. This is an interesting, scenic trip; the road is especially famous for the zig zags where it climbs out of the canyon of the Bued River to the plateau. In the September number of the National Geographic Magazine, a fine aerial picture of this road, as well as of other interesting points in various parts of the Philippines, appears. Freight for the district is taken in mainly over the Naguilian road connecting with the railroad at Bauang. This route follows the ridges of the mountain slope with broad vistas and views of the coast.

"INTRODUCTION According to the Roane Iron Co. of Rockwood, Tenn., the Chamberlain. Barnardville iron deposit produced approximately three million tons of iron ore previous to 1928. The deposit is divided into two synclinal bodies termed the north and south synclines. Production has come from the northern extremities of both bodies.The need for developing additional iron-ore reserves during the war prompted the Bureau of Mines to initiate an exploratory program on the Chamberlain-Barnardville deposit in February 1944, which continued until December 1944.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. Knickerbocker, chief, analyzes samples and performs beneficiation tests. Both these branches are under the supervision of Dr. R. S. Dean, assistant director."

A variety of modeling techniques can be utilized to forecast metal production at heap leaching operations. These approaches reflect a wide range of complexity, flexibility, time to implement, cost, and accuracy. For many operators, a spreadsheet-based modeling technique is attractive since the calculations are directly accessible, models can often be developed by site staff, and the results are generally easy to extract and interpret. The authors have developed a spreadsheet-based modeling technique that provides a high degree of flexibility, while still considering detailed operating information for ore properties, leach kinetics, scaleup factors, lift height, and in-heap metal inventories. The technique involves establishing kinetic leach curves for each ore type to characterize metal extractions, followed by application of separate metal recovery curves to define the rate at which leached metals exit the heap in pregnant solution, taking into account delays due to the in-heap solution inventory. At any point in time, the difference between total metal extracted and total metal recovered is equal to the in-heap inventory of the leached metal. This modeling technique is particularly useful for larger multi-lift heaps where delays in metal recovery are appreciable due to in-heap solution holdup. The technique is also applicable to sites with multiple heaps, leach cycles, and/or metal recovery plants (e.g., carbon columns for gold; solvent extraction for copper). This paper describes the modeling technique, including input data required and methods for defining kinetic leach curves and metal recovery curves. The technique is compared against an alternative spreadsheet technique using a simplified in-heap solution inventory calculation to forecast metal production, which has proven to be effective at a number of sites.

In more recent years the procedure has been developed further in the course of the extensive valuation work required for Federal taxation purposes. The 1-aluation of oil and gas properties and of mines is based upon the same principle-the estimation of the present worth of future net revenues. However, in valuing oil and gas properties the method used for discounting future revenues differs somewhat from that adopted for mines, owing principally to the nature of the re- source. production from oil and gas properties usually declines from year to year, whereas coal and ore de- posits are adapted to a more uniform rate of output.

For practical purposes, the terms "natural frequency," "resonance" and "critical speed" are synonymous. A part passing though its "critical" or "critical speed" may also be said to be "resonant" or "resonating." The vibrations of a precisely balanced part can be magnified by the structure in which it is assembled. Anyone who has driven an automobile knows that it will vibrate more at a certain speed than at others. According to the formula for centrifugal force, vibration should increase steadily with a rise in rpm. What happens instead is that the vibration not only in- creases with r m. but suddenly rises at a much higher rate through the critical speed, and then apparently smooths out as the rpm passes beyond it. To visualize what happens, consider a simple flat spring with a weight mounted at one end. When the spring is deflected by pulling down on the weight and then letting it go, the spring will oscillate, and the spring-and-weight system will vibrate at its natural frequency. If the timing or direction bf the impulses imparted to the spring did not coincide with its natural frequency, the result would be an irregular vibration that would not build up. If, on the other hand, the timing and direction of the impulses did coincide with the spring's natural frequency, the result would be a larger and larger amplitude. If the impulses were continued indefinitely, the amplitude of the spring's vibrations would go on rising [while its frequency stayed the same] until the spring broke or the amplitude of the vibrations reached an equilibrium [because frictional or other forces would tend to damp it]. Resonance magnifies the amplitude of vibrations in a relatively undamped system between 100 to 200 times over that of nonresonant vibrations. Frictional or viscous damping often reduces the magnification [from 10 to 20 times], but even with this reduction the amplitude would still be large enough to cause excessive wear, and sometimes even fractures. For example, a blower might show only 0.001 in. of vibration on the manufacturer's test stand. Installed, the blower could pass into its critical speed [the speed at which the frequency of the vibrations caused by the rotor coincides with the supporting structure's natural frequency], and the 0.001 in. of vibration could be resonated to 0.010 in., or as much as 0.020 in. The cure for such a condition would not be to lower the vibration of the blower by further balancing or better alignment but to separate the two frequencies by at least 20 to 30%.

The key to our well being is sustainable development Development effort for human well being may have adverse impact on the environment also. To keep the net impact positive is critical for sustainable development. For mineral processing industry, the value of a mineral is in the actual value as perceived by the end user. The process designs, investments in technology development all have direct relationship with the value of use and making a net positive impact on our ecosystem The value proposition has shifted towards raw materials and is a big differentiator. The availability of good quality raw material is difficult or is available at a premium. The challenge today is to develop green technologies that make effective and efficient usage of low grade raw materials The low grade raw materials as available pose a significant opportunity for human race for delivering value. They offer an easier reach to a value as perceived in end use but the journey is full of challenges. The first challenge is development of technology for maximizing grade recovery as required by the downstream process. The second challenge is to make the technology viable so that it contributes value to end use and the third challenge is to keep the net impact of the process positive The mining and mineral processing fraternity, being at the beginning of this value chain is set to take the first step in this journey for a tryst with ultimate human well being. In 1911, a young mining engineer named Bartlett Thane assembled a large claim block, 4 miles southeast of Juneau, Alaska. Across the Gastineau Channel on Douglas Island, the Alaska Treadwell Gold Mining Company had, by 1904, produced gold valued at more than three times the purchase price of Alaska in 1867 (Kelly, 2010). Thane knew his deposit was lower grade than other mines or prospects in the area; however, if the deposit was developed on a large-scale, the trend and size of the deposit made the project potentially economic. In 1911, Thane developed a business plan for the project and successfully attracted investor interest. In 1912, Daniel C Jackling visited the property at the request of an east coast investment group. Upon inspection of 5 years of production records for the Perseverance Mine, Jackling saw an opportunity to apply the low-grade/high volume milling technology which was widely adopted to the copper porphyry deposits of the southwestern U.S. With a design capacity of 6,000 tons per day (5,454 tonnes/day), Jackling’s innovative mill design would require high volume underground mining methods and the power of two new hydroelectric projects. By 1915, the Alaska Gastineau Mining Company was in full production. Between 1915 and 1919, the mine and mill set production records for haulage and throughput. The hydroelectric projects proved to be successful engineering marvels. Operational difficulties related to ore grade, refractory elements and labor shortages interrupted production on an increasing basis. In 1921, the mining company permanently shut down operations. INTRODUCTION The Juneau Gold Belt begins at Windham Bay near the southern end of Stephens Passage and extends approximately 100 miles north to Berners Bay (Figure 1). The first large-scale and sustained underground mine, operated by the Alaska Treadwell Gold Mining Company in the late 1880’s, established the Juneau-Douglas area as the regional hub for transportation and development. In the mid-1890’s, the combined population of Juneau and Douglas reached approximately 3,000 residents, largely driven by employment and support demands of several small to mid-size underground gold mines in the region. By 1904, the value of the cumulative gold production of the Alaska Treadwell was five times greater than the purchase price of Alaska in 1867 (Kelly, 2010). By the turn of the 20th century, economic growth in the Juneau-Douglas area relied on supplies delivered from the lower 48. Passenger and freight shipping lines required 3 to 4 days to make the one-way trip from Seattle to Juneau. Established shipping routes required experienced crews due to navigation hazards and adverse weather conditions. Even with precautions at the time, steam ships and freighter vessels experienced breakdowns or encounters with natural hazards that resulted in damage or in some cases, sinking. Interestingly, with no roads or railroads connecting Juneau to other communities in southeast Alaska, Juneau still relies on seaborn shipping in the 21st century.

"Up until the mid 1960's, the only available methods for making continuous weight measurements were through the use of mechanical and electro-mechanical weigh scales. It was during this time period that a new concept in weighing was introduced. It was known and is still known as the nuclear belt weigh scale.During the early days of its appearance in the market place, many things were learned about its advantages and disadvantages for weighing various materials. As with many new devices, it had to go through a ""wringing out stage"" before it became accepted by the weighing industry. Even today, even though it is a proven device, there are skeptics who believe the nuclear belt weigh scale will not survive. Let me assure you, it is here to stay.. 'PRINCIPLE OF MEASUREMENTThe nuclear belt weigh scale consists of a ""C"" Frame assembly which houses the radioactive source (Cesiwn 137) and the radiation detector (Ionization chamber). The ""C"" Frame assembly is put in place around the conveyor belt as shown in Figure 1. The radiation source emits a fan shaped beam of radiation which covers the full width of the material being conveyed on the belt. Radiation which has passed through the material on the belt is detected by the ionization chamber which is located in the lower arm of the ""C"" Frame assembly. The ionization chamber changes the radiation energy into an electrical signal which is related to pounds per foot belt loading. This signal is transmitted to a highly stable amplifier which combines the pounds per foot signal with a belt travel signal from a digital tachometer which allowed the scale user to be able to monitor total mass being conveyed. Many so-called conventional type scales use belt speed rather than travel to obtain mass per unit time, and then integrate the signal to obtain their weight signal. This unnecessary step tends to erode the overall accuracy of the weighing system."

The Goro Nickel Project is situated in the Southern Province of New Caledonia. Inco Limited and Goro Nickel S.A. have developed a process that features the use of pyrohydrolysis to produce nickel oxide. The process treats a blend of laterites by Pressure Acid Leaching followed by solvent extraction of nickel and cobalt using Cyanex 301®. Purified nickel chloride solution is converted to high purity NiO product and 6M hydrochloric acid, which is recycled back to the SX circuit. In co-operation with Andritz AG, spray roaster and fluid-bed pyrohydrolysis technologies were examined for this purpose. Tests were conducted at the Andritz AG pilot plant in Vienna, Austria, and at Goro in larger scale installations. The latter served to establish process engineering design parameters for scale-up. Several process variables were investigated in both technologies and the off-gas characteristics were established. Fluid-bed pyrohydrolysis was selected for the Goro commercial plant, primarily because it produced a granular nickel oxide. The main focus of this paper is to outline the results obtained in pilot plant studies of liquid fueled fluid bed pyrohydrolysis for the Goro Project. Olympic Dam Operation is located in the Stuart Shelf Geological Province approximately 520 km north-north-west of Adelaide in South Australia. It is estimated to be one of the worldÆs top five copper orebodies by size and the biggest single occurrence of uranium. The deposit was discovered by Western Mining Corporation in 1975. Exploration was based on a conceptual model for the formation of sediment hosted copper deposits together with gravity and magnetic anomalies.The capital cost of the current expansion is estimated to be A$ 1.64 billion. The underground expansion includes a total of 36 km of lateral development, a railway haulage system delivering ore from a series of ore passes to a new crusher station and a significant increase in ventilation capacity and mine services.In the current underground expansion the mining method will essentially remain unchanged. The ore handling system will incorporate some recent advances in technology, improving efficiency and safety standards.Major infrastructure excavations are designed by a team of engineers attached to the Olympic Dam Expansion Project and a number of consulting groups. Once the expansion is fully completed it is expected to increase the current annual underground production level from 3.4 Mt to 9.0 Mt of ore by the year 2000. Mine design engineers working for the Olympic Dam Operation have recently completed a three year final design plan to achieve this target.Access to the existing mine is through the decline and Whenan shaft. The Whenan shaft was originally sunk as an exploration access and later upgraded for hoisting. The 4 km long service decline connecting to the Whenan shaft was later constructed to accommodate the increase in service demand. The Robinson and Sir Lindsay Clark shafts were developed at later stages to cater for the hoisting during and following the expansion lead up.

A large number of operators of various industries in the United States do not appear to realize the great returns in dollars and cents which result from intelligently directed safety work . Managers of co 1 mines , metal mines , open-pit mines , quarries , steel mills , cement mills , oil rei meries , iron works , or other industrial operations , should by all means realize the great waste resulting from accidents , in order to appreciate the necessity for a continuous accident -prevention policy . While the prevention of accidents is worth while from the humanitarian standpoint alone , it has an equally important economic side , and before our mining industrial operations will be made as safe as they should be , it is apparent that this dollars and cents viewpoint must be given full recognition in order to bring before many of the men who run the industries the great importance of this phase of industrial management . : There is a tendency upon the part of the opera or who has not given thought to the cost of accidents ( and there are many mining operators of this type) to insure his company against compensation losses and against catastrophes for which he can secure insurance , and think he has done his duty ar an executive . Even though industrial operations were not compelled to pay compensation , and even if the management were not moved by humanitarian motives to try to stop accidents , it would pay many times over to carry on accident prevention work vigorously and continuously. : In some parts of the United States , the state compensation and insurance requirements are such that the operator does not receive a reduction in his insurance rate per men employed upon having made safety installations or upon having achieved a reduction of accidents in his plant . Under such conditions the management frequently does not feel encouraged to emert much effort in bettering the accident rate . However , when the responsible officials of a company realize the much greater harm to an operation which results from doing no accident - prevention work , and the great benefit in reduced costs which usually follows effective safety work , they should be inclined to do almost everything possible to reduce accidents , regardless of considerations as to accident compensations . There are enough indirect costs resulting from accidents to wreck many types of business ; excessive accidents result in disorganization and failure , while immunity from accidents usually means a smoothly running efficient organization .

The possible closure and subsequent flooding of South Deep Gold Mine?s (SD) neighbouring Randfontein Estates Limited No. 4 Shaft (REL 4) necessitated the construction of five concrete plugs in the connecting tunnels to prevent the ingress of groundwater into REL4 from flooding SD. This paper describes the proposed controlled flooding of REL 4, the planned in-service monitoring of the five plugs and the water barrier between REL 4 and South Deep Mine, and the long-term maintenance of the plugs and rock mass in the immediate vicinity of the plugs.

Progress is reported on capturing the effects of gangue chemistry in the context of a comprehensive stockpile heap leach model for leaching copper sulfide ores, employing leading edge computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technology. The stockpile is a complex multi-phase process, comprising of a solid porous media, with complex fluid flow, gas and liquid phases, competing solid-liquid reactions, dissolution of minerals and transport through the heap. The model accounts for many of the challenging physical and chemical features of the heap, including transport and reactions kinetics for the important copper and iron sulfide minerals, ferrous oxidation, bacterial effects, thermal energy, acid and sulfate balances. In this contribution, the model has been extended to incorporate dissolution of various species from gangue reactions and precipitation of hydronium and potassium jarosite, ferric hydroxide, alunite, and gypsum. The effect of aeration on the simulation of a copper sulfide heap leach is provided as an example.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is evaluating water spray additives for the purpose of improving respirable dust control during coal mining operations, with particular emphasis on the longwall shearer. Recent field tests of surfactant-polymer reagents at two production longwall operations have shown favorable respirable dust reductions compared with water sprays containing no additive. Gravimetric dust samples obtained by a technician downwind of the shearer while following or preceding the machine showed dust reductions in the range of about 40% to 60% for some of the reagent formulations compared with using water alone. Three polymers were tested: two polyethylene oxide compounds of different molecular weight and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC). All were effective for dust reduction, and two were cost effective when used in combination with sodium di(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate surfactant. How-ever, the use of these reagents requires the longwall operator to be more aware of headgate dust control. Experimental evidence indicates that dust captured by reagent-treated sprays at the shearer can be reemitted in the headgate area if stagcloader-crusher sprays and other dust controls are inadequate.

The San Juan Coal Mine, located near Farmington, New Mexico, supplies the San Juan Generating Station with more than 6 million tons of coal annually. To replace dwindling surface mine production, San Juan installed a longwall in 2002. The roof rock in much of the underground reserve consists of interbedded coals, carbonaceous shales, and mudstones. Roof support consists of fully-grouted roof bolts, both tensioned and non-tensioned, supplemented by modified cable trusses. Short-encapsulation pull tests conducted by San Juan’s geotechnical engineering department showed that some of the immediate roof layers provided variable bolt anchorage. To ensure that the roof bolts were obtaining the necessary anchorage, additional tests were conducted in a variety of locations. The results have been used to determine the optimum support design for different areas of the mine. Another series of tests evaluated the performance of several bolt and hole diameter combinations. The experience at San Juan Mine shows that short-encapsulation pull tests can provide the information necessary to improve ground control in variable roof conditions. It also illustrates how a pro-active geotechnical engineering program can be an essential component of a state of the art underground coal mine.
