DOE recently funded 21 projects under the solicitation by its Environmental Restoration and Waste Management Division. This project is combining the expertise of an interdisciplinary team of researchers with that of three manufacturers to isolate nuclear waste storage sites using remote longwall mining. The concept is being pursued in Germany, too. This paper will present the conceptual approach to the project and discuss the problems in transferring longwall mining technology to nuclear waste containment.

This article describes the implementation of a new jointing process for use between diaphragm wall panels. This process was initially introduced on the SOCATOP work site in uburban Paris (which involved the closing of the western section of the A86 bypass road), on a tunnel ventilation shaft. This brand new system upgrades the potential offered by other types of joints available and enables both ensuring the continuity of panels for structures over 40 m in depth under the strictest safety conditions and constructing shafts with diameters of less than 15 m. A patent for this process has recently been filed.

Space-based synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data is becoming available over much of the world, includingNew Zealand. Radar imagery has a number of very advantageous features, including all-weather capability; it also has artifacts, such as layover, which require processing before these data may be used to best effect.   This paper gives an outline of SAR, details the image processing required, and discusses the use of the first New Zealand Japan Earth Resources-1 SAR data to aid geological mapping on the Coromandel Peninsula.

Minimising dilution and ore loss is an important part of ensuring profitability of a gold mining operation. White Foil open pit gold deposit is a low-grade deposit and therefore managing ore quality is a high priority. Ground movement through blasting can displace ore and waste boundaries up to 10 m from their in situ location and therefore requires stringent ore movement monitoring and adjustment. There are currently only two options for monitoring blast movement – utilising visual targets (commonly lengths of polypipe) but this has widely been replaced by electronic blast movement monitors (or BMM). Regardless of the technology used, the basic principle is to compare the pre- and post-blast locations of the targets to determine the movement of the rock mass during blasting, which is then used to determine the final location of ore and waste boundaries.The Blast Movement Technologies (BMT) BMM system has been used at White Foil since June 2014. The system has been effective and reliable during that time; however, the annual cost of using the BMM system is greater than other monitoring alternatives. As such, the open pit geology team conducted a study comparing the BMM system against the conventional polypipe technique. The objective was to quantify the profit and loss that would occur based on the ore block transformations from both methods. Eight blasts were selected where polypipes were installed in additional holes adjacent to the BMM monitoring holes. The resulting movement vectors from the respective methods were used to create post-blast ore blocks by transforming the in situ ore blocks. While polypipe is a cheaper alternative, the BMM system tracks ore and waste boundaries more effectively resulting in better quality control, enhanced ability to minimise dilution and ore loss thus maximising profit. For these eight blasts, it is calculated that the BMM system resulted in A$664 978 extra profit through a reduction of ore loss. The total cost of a yearly BMM package was recovered in the first two blasts of this study. The primary reason for the difference is that polypipe had a poor recovery rate of 32 per cent compared with 92 per cent for BMM at White Foil. Therefore, the data used to transform the ore blocks was less representative, resulting in inaccurate post-blast ore block boundaries when using polypipe.CITATION:Watson, M E, 2017. "In the past year, BioteQ Environmental Technologies Inc. have initiated design and construction of new plants to add to an existing list of plants that utilize the BioSulphide® and ChemSulphide™ process technologies for metal recovery and water treatment. In these plants, low cost biogenic sulfide or, in some cases, chemical sulfide reagent is used to selectively remove metals from contaminated water. The process produces high grade, marketable, metal sulfide products even from low grade feed solutions. The revenues generated from the sale of products can allow for water treatment at a profit in some cases, offset treatment costs in others, and generally reduce sludge disposal and management costs. The effluents produced from the process can meet stringent environmental standards. Current plants in operation and under construction range in sulphide demand from 50 kg/day to 3.7 tonnes/day, with the feasibility of larger plants with sulfide demands ranging from 6 to 43 tonnes/day under review.Biogenic sulfide reagent can also be considered for other applications in hydrometallurgy and mineral processing. Uses under consideration by a number of mining companies include: (1) replacement of sodium hydrosulphide in the SART process for cyanide regeneration and copper recovery in the processing of gold-copper ores, and (2) replacement of sodium hydrosulphide for use in the separation of copper and molybdenum in flotation. Biogenic sulphide, produced on demand at site, offers significant cost savings and provides the additional benefit of improved safety due to the elimination of the transportation, handling and storage required for chemical sulphide reagents.This paper reviews the applications of the BioSulphide® and ChemSulphide™ technologies for water treatment and metal recovery, and introduces projects where biogenic sulfide can be applied in hydrometallurgy and mineral processing."

The International Mineral Valuation (IMVAL) Committee, founded in 2012, develops strategies for conducting mineral valuations. These strategies have been developed into a mineral asset valuation template called the International Mineral Property Valuation Standards Template and is part of IMVAL's work to establish consistent international standards for mineral property valuation and reporting. This template is a living document that is updated from time to time and is based on three core values or pillars (Fundamental Principles): Competence, Materiality, and Transparency. Objectivity, Independence, and Reasonableness may be applied as required by national codes or standards. The Template harmonizes international standards for valuation of mineral assets as real property and represents a consensus of current good practices. It is not a stand-alone reporting code and does not supersede existing national reporting standards. The Template deals with mineral-property valuation as distinct from mineral-project evaluation. INTRODUCTION In his 1989 book, “The New Realities”, Peter F. Drucker, Clark Professor of Social Science at Claremont Graduate School, California, stated: “Information is data endowed with relevance and purpose. Converting data into information thus requires knowledge. And knowledge, by definition, is specialized.” (p. 209) The discipline of mineral valuation is knowledge-based and requires a mineral valuer to collect, analyze, and interpret data that are material to a mineral valuation assignment. In so doing, the valuer turns the data into information (data come first, followed by information as determined by the mineral valuer) for use by the client (from whom the valuer obtained the mineral valuation assignment) and other intended users. The valuer uses his or her experience and education (each valuer’s knowledge base) supported by a foundation built upon competency, materiality, and transparency, the three pillars of mineral valuation (“minerals valuation”, “mineral-property valuation”). The International Mineral Valuation Standards Template (“IMVAL Template”, IMVAL”, “Template”), third edition dated May 2018, defines mineral valuation as: “The estimation of the Value of a Mineral Property in money or monetary equivalent. The word ‘valuation’ can be used to refer to the estimated value (the Valuation conclusion) or to refer to the preparation of the estimated Value (the act of valuing).” (p. 14) Furthermore, the IMVAL Template clearly separates valuation from evaluation: “The Template deals with Valuation, which is distinct from Evaluation. The distinction inherent in these defined terms is that Valuation addresses the estimation of value of a Mineral Property, whereas Evaluation addresses the broader assessment of a Mineral Property for an investment decision.” (p. 2)

SAFETY in coal mining received especial attention by the public in general and the mining industry in particular during 1940 and early in 1941, owing primarily to the six explosion disasters which occurred last year with a total of 276 fatalities. This was the largest number of fatalities due to explosions in bituminous coal mines since 1928, when 347 lives were so lost. But facilities due to explosions have had a definite decreasing trend since 1907, in spite of bad years such as 1917, 1924, 1932, 1937, and 1940. Although the upswing in explosion fatalities in 1940 is lamented by all, none will admit it represents a trend and it will serve mainly to stimulate ways and means of further reducing these disasters.

OHSAS 18001 is a series of international standards for occupational health and safety management. It is comprised of two parts, 18001 and 180029. OHSAS 18001 was formulated by international certifying bodies and is based on BS8800 and was first published in 19996,11. OHSAS 18001 was developed to be compatible with ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 in order to facilitate integration of quality, environment, and occupational health and safety management systems5. It is a voluntary standard and the overall aim of OHSAS 18001 is to enable organizations to control their occupational health and safety (OH&S) risks and improve overall health and safety performance5. OHSAS 18001 is widely accepted in the UK, Europe, and Asia, is gaining momentum in North and South America, and it was used as the basis and conforms to the requirements of ANSI/AIHA Z.10-2005: American National Standard for Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems. It defines a set of requirements for an occupational health and safety management system suitable for any kind and size of organization4. Businesses of all sizes are developing and implementing occupational health and safety management systems (OHSMS) that are in compliance with the OHSAS 18001 standard.

The Bureau of Mines conducted radiation-ventilation studies in six large underground uranium mines to investigate the extent of radon-daughter exposure experienced by the miners and to analyze the ventilation systems to set what changes were required to achieve recommended radiation standards. The studies entailed tracing and measuring the mines' ventilating air, quantitatively and qualitaitively, from its entrance into the mines, through production areas, and lack to the surface. Pressures consumed in creating airflow through mine circuits were determined by altimeter surveys. Air quantities were measured with anemometers or by chemical smoke cloud methods. Air quantities delivered through tubing were determined using U-tube water gages to magnahelic gages to measure velocity pressures. Radon-daughters were filtered from mine air to measure alpha activity; activity levels were converted to "working levels," the established unit for reporting miner exposure. Attention was given to locating unnecessary contamination influx sources and recirculating air. The radiation-ventilation surveys showed that where basic principles of food ventilation were not followed, high alpha radiation levels invariably resulted. Some mines required more primary air for controlling radiation levels throughout active areas, but more efficient use of available air was generally possible. Premature contamination of intake air was prevalent where development Openings intersected ore or passed by worked-out stopes. Several auxiliary systems were inefficient in secondary distribution, recirculating air already too highly contaminated for ventilation. Many got these common problems can be traced try the lack of dine planning with radiation control in mind.

"Sampling may be mandatory for safety or environmental reasons. It may be because the value of a sale needs to be determined or to provide important data for investments. Whatever the reason, an incorrect sample will come at a risk. Only the person that relies on sampling data can imagine what the potential cost of such risk is.Sampling itself has a cost too; the direct cost of a quality control department and indirect cost for interrupting a process, such as stopping a conveyor belt during loading. If all material is the same then only one small sample is enough. But if all the material is different, then a very large sample must be tested; in the conveyor belt scenario it must be stopped very frequently and the associated cost will be high.A good sampling plan finds the proper balance between risk and cost. A good sample must be small enough to handle yet large enough to be representative for what information is required. All good samples have three things in common: there was proper access to the material the sampling tool allowed equal probability of particles being selected nothing was disregarded, everything was included.This too is the core of Gy’s ideal sampling scenario, where all particles have the same probability of being selected and included in the sample. There is risk of bias when part of a lot is excluded from the sample. Extra care is needed when sampling particularly heterogeneous, segregated or layered materials. The sampling tool should never systematically leave out a portion; it shall not push aside large or hard particles. Wet samples shall not stick to the sampling tool. This extends to sample preparation too when reducing particle size and dividing the sample in the process.CITATION:Vogel, D A, 2017. The sphere of operations of dry crushing has been so much enlarged of late years that the following notes with reference to its advantages and limitations, and also some practical results in connection with the crushing of gold ores will probably be of service to the members of the Institute. Until recently, with one notable exception that of the Mt. Morgan Gold Mine, dry crushing has only been practiced to a very limited extent in Australasia, and elsewhere it might be said to belong to industries other than mining Its sphere of usefulness depends on the fact that the' product is delivered in a dry state without the separation of the finer particles from the coarser to any appreciable extent, thus enabling the following advantages to be achieved with different ores.

The Multiple Blasthole Fragmentation (MBF) model was developed recently and has been reported in previous papers. The MBF model accepts inputs from the blast design, such as: location and orientation of each blast hole, stemming length, blast hole diameter, multiple decking, bench height, initiation sequence, etc. It models the effect on fragmentation of delay timing with its associated scatter for each blast hole. MBF has a statistical modeling capability for geological random variation of the attenuation of particle velocities. Also simulated is wave reinforcement due to the interaction of simultaneously arriving waves or diminishing cooperative contribution from long delay intervals between charges.

"Dry-lube has been used in Europe to enhance formability of aluminum sheet for automotive applications, but it is difficult to ensure degreasing performance with lower degreasing bath temperature. However, newly developed, highly lubricating pre-coats utilizing a urethane resin, which is soluble in water, have been found to show excellent degreasing performance. Furthermore, a richer pre-coat weight coincides with a lower friction coefficient and better formability. Combined use of anti-rust liquid oil showed different friction coefficient depending on applied surface pressure.INTRODUCTION The global demand for aluminum alloy products, especially for automotive application, has been increasing because aluminum alloys can offer excellent corrosion resistance with good strength and low density compared with steel. Aluminum alloys can contribute to saving much more energy and greenhouse gas emissions over the lifetime of the product. On the other hand, the amount of aluminum alloys in vehicle architectures is still somewhat limited due to relatively low formability. As a consequence of this low formability, it is necessary to set a certain limit to the shape of an aluminum alloy panel for automotive applications. So far hot melt wax dry lubricants have been in use especially in Europe as they have been recognized to provide better lubrication than conventional rust protection oils (Meiler & Jaschke, 2005). The benefit of hot-melt wax for automotive manufacturing is associated with a more stable forming process and the possibility to avoid extra lubrication in the press shop. But because of the low poorer solubility of hot-melt wax in degreasing aqueous bath solution, a higher degreasing temperature is required so that no remnant of hot melt wax can be carried over to the next manufacturing process. This temperature control is difficult to impress upon a manufacturing degreasing bath originally designed for liquid oil, especially in Japan. The typical temperature of degreasing bath in Europe is around 60°C, while it is only around 40°C. in Japan. Various types of pre-coats other than hot-melt with high lubricity have been reported (Tawara, 1993; Ueda, Hatsuno & Totani, 2013), but a balance between sufficient degreasing performance and high lubricity has not yet been achieved for an actual production process line."

WITHIN the past decade, certain economic, legal, and technological changes have intensified the necessity for an efficient classifier or deslimer of particles at and below the 200-mesh point. First, mechanization of mining has increased the percentage of clays, silts, refuse, and high-ash material in the run-of-mine coal. Second, many washing plants must rely on smaller percentages of fresh make-up water because of shortages, economic factors, or legal restrictions on waste water disposal. Finally, the crushing of middlings and coarse refuse plus the trends toward the finer sizes in sales has further increased the amount of fines produced per ton of mine-run coal. A joint consequence of these circumstances has been the augmented percentage and build-up of —200-mesh material in the finer coal fractions and tipple circulating water. This results in the following disadvantages to the operator: (1) Higher ash percentages in the fine coal caused in large measure by the greater ash content of the —200-mesh material, (2) more difficult or expensive recovery of the fine coal from plant slurries, (3) lower filtration, drainage, and drying rates caused chiefly by lower permeability and the greater surface exposed per unit mass of the finer particles, (4) greater difficulty of beneficiatiing the fine coal because of lowered equipment efficiency and the partial "coating-out" of the —200-mesh fraction on the coarser coal particles. Obviously some cheap but effective fine-size classifier must be developed to aid in solving the above problems. To eliminate the generally unwanted —200-mesh fraction from coal slurries, several methods are in use. Probably the most popular with coal operators is the settling cone wherein the larger particles settle downward to the apex of an inverted cone while the slimes and fines are carried upward by vertical fluid currents caused by the overflow of the bulk of the water at the outer rim. The main advantage of the unit is the low initial and operating cost since no moving parts are involved. Disadvantages are primarily low capacity per square foot or floor space and the loss of good coal in the overflow above the 100-mesh size due to localized, high-velocity gradients and nonuniform, fluid-flow patterns, especially at high loadings. Also, when high slime concentrations are present, desliming efficiency is severely injured.', ' Other methods employed are the drag and spiral classifiers and the hydroseparator.' These involve mechanical separations achieved by moving parts and naturally result in higher initial costs. As they are all based on the settling velocity of the particles at the mesh of separation under operating conditions, area requirements are again large per gallon of throughput if they are to classify at the 200-mesh point. Usually the selection is made to operate at a higher throughput and thus sacrifice some coarser coal in the slime overflow. APOCRYPHAL, no doubt, but widely entertained is the proposition that top-flight mining geologists never agree with each other on anything. Being rugged individualists, they frequently seem intolerant of opinions that conflict with their own. However, one may suspect that controversy is often more apparent than real. For example, at last summer's meeting of the American Mining Congress, Ira B. Joralemon and Reno H. Sales, discussing "Mining Geology, Today and Tomorrow," seemed to be in serious disagreement over various phases of the subject; but much of this arises from the different angles of approach of the two distinguished and successful ore finders.

IT IS almost exactly fifteen years since the discovery of the Leduc oil field and, as this luncheon is part of the Thirteenth Annual Technical Meeting of the Institute's Petroleum and Natural Gas Division, it seems, therefore, a singularly appropriate time to discuss the theme which the program committee has suggested for the occasion -the progress of the Canadian oil industry during the fifteen years since the discovery of the Leduc field. As you will see, I plan to take a few minor liberties with this suggested theme. I shall present ample evidence of growth and progress, but, at the same time, I want to refer to some areas where progress has been anything but conspicuous and to see what can be learned from these areas for the future. The achievements of the Canadian oil industry since the Leduc discovery in 1947 have been substantial, and the public is relatively familiar with the more spectacular developments.

In open pit mining, each small mining unit (SMU) is selected for mill processing based on an estimate of its true grade. The estimation is usually done using analyses of cuttings from blast holes within that SMU. One common estimator used for selection is the arithmetic average of within-SMU samples. This estimator is conditionally biased. The effect of a conditional bias is to overestimate the profit really recovered from the deposit. For this reason, a conditionally unbiased estimator is preferable. Increasing the number of samples generally improves the accuracy of the estimation (and diminishes the conditional bias, if present, of most estimators). However, there exists a practical limit where an additional sample does not improve the estimation sufficiently to cover the expense of making the analysis. This limit is specific to each deposit and depends on geostatistical parameters, economic factors, and mining parameters. This study examines how the number of samples affects the recovered reserves and the resulting profit. Also, the effects on optimal profit of varying the different factors are examined. Globally, the number of samples required increases with the selectivity of the operation. For a given ore deposit, the greater the number of SMUs selected for processing, the fewer samples are required and vice-versa.

The Rio Tinto Metal (RTMetal) copper smelter, located 5 Km from Huelva, Spain, began operations in 1970. Since then a series of expansions and modifications have allowed a progressive increase in copper production. Environmental considerations having become increasingly important, environmental protection has come to represent an important aspect of the investments in production. As a result, modifications have been carried out in the two existing acid plants: -Modification of the RTM I gas cleaning section to closed circuit. -Substitution of cascade filters and acid lines. -Modification of the RTM I plant to double absorption. The Expansion and Environmental Improvement Project, completed end 1995, will allow 270,000 t Cu and 800,000 t H2SO4 to be produced yearly, at the same time achieving a decrease in specific and overall emissions. RTMetal's goal is to be an efficient smelter, with the avowed intention of respecting the environment and adopting the best available technologies.

THE Eastern Townships of Quebec have been the chief Canadian source of chromite. Production, however, has never been large and, except for a period of steady but small output between 1894 and 1909, mining has been active only in war time. The known deposits are too small or too low grade to compete with overseas sources in normal times. During the last war, shipping difficulties and a greatly increased demand in the United States resulted in high prices and a ready market for low-.grade material. The Quebec chromite industry flourished and played an important part in relieving the wartime shortage. Shipments in 1918 .amounted to 15,600 tons of crude ore and 6,400 tons of concentrates. At the outbreak of the present war it was natural to turn again to the Quebec field as a possible source of this strategic mineral. Some of the old properties have since been opened by private and government money and some new deposits have been found. Total mill capacity is 750 tons per day, as compared with 200 to 300 tons in 1918. During 1940, 1941, and 1942, about 85 chromite deposits were examined by the Geological Survey in a belt 100 miles long and up to 7 miles wide. A part of this belt, about 35 miles long, in which the geological features ?were not well known, was mapped on a scale of 1/2; mile to an inch.? Small ..areas around some of the deposits were mapped in detail, on scales of 20 to 200 feet to an inch. Some geophysical work was done but did not result in the discovery of ore. Prospecting by stripping and trenching was then undertaken and chromite ore was uncovered at several localities. The above work was done by the writer and by J. W. Ambrose, who has kindly contributed his results for incorporation in this paper. Y. O. Fortier actd as assistant in the geological work and, in 1942, was in charge of a sub-party engaged in geological mapping. The author is indebted to H. C. Cooke and J. W.
