The Sullivan Concentrator treats a complex sulphide ore consisting mainly of galena, marmatite and pyrrhotite. The ore carried minor values in silver, antimony, bismuth, indium and tin. The products of the concentrator are lead, zinc, iron and tin concentrates. The minor metal values other than tin are recovered from the concentrates by the refining processes in the smelter at Trail.The concentrator was completed in 1923 and first operated with a capacity of 2,500 tons per day. In the years 1926 to 1929 changes to equipment and buildings brought the operation up to 5,500 tons per day and then, in the years 1935 to 1945, the daily tonnage was raised to 8,500 tons. After 1945, the rising insoluble content of the ore made it necessary to consider the construction of a Sink-Float plant. At this time consideration was also given to the construction of a new crushing plant underground to replace the rolls crushers and cone crushers located at the concentrator. By 1949, construction of the Sink-Float plant was completed along with a new underground crushing plant, and an electric haulage way between the underground crushing chamber and the Sink-Float plant. The ore was hauled in forty 14-ton car trains which discharged into a 3,000 ton receiving bin by means of an air operated five car rotary dumper. With the start up of the,Sink-Float plant, a 1 ½ ft. by 12 ft. Hardinge rod mill was also brought into operation. The Sink-Float plant made it possible to treat 12,000 tons/day of mine run ore with up to 40% of this being rejected as float.

In the usual volumetric determination of uranium, the solution containing uranium is reduced in a Jones reductor, yielding a mixture of trivalent and tetravalent uranium; the trivalent uranium is oxidized to the tetravalent state by bubbling a stream of air through the solution. The resulting solution of. Tetravalent uranium is titrated with a standard oxidant, generally sulfatoceric acid, dichromate, or permanganate; It seemed likely that the, same general procedure could be used in determining semimicro quantities of uranium if the conditions affecting the variables involved were understood more clearly than at present. In the method described below, the use of ferric sulfate to oxidize tetravalent uranium allows the titration to be made at room temperature in an essentially colorless solution with sulfatoceric acid. The latter oxidant its turn permits the use of the very stable indicator, ferroin, with its sharp color.., change and exactly reproducible blanks. Solutions of uranyl sulfate were prepared by diluting a stock solution that had been standardized gravimetrically according to the method of Lundell and Knowles (8).3/ Solutions of sulfatoceric acid were prepared according to the directions of G. F. Smith (12) and were standardized against arsenic trioxide in the presence of osmic acid according to the directions of Gleu. The cerium solutions were stored in 18-liter carboys fitted with siphon arrangements so that the bottles did not need to be opened and protected from light in a dark cupboard. Under these conditions, even the 0.01 N solution changed by less than 1 part per thousand over a period of about 6 months.

"Underground construction poses certain challenges for all parties involved because the actual ground conditions are often unpredictable. Highly complex projects like tunnel construction are affected by various uncertainties. To address this complexity, the construction contract has to be flexible enough to be adapted to the actual conditions (e.g. divergent ground conditions, work delays). However, the adaptation of a tunnel construction contract does not guarantee the absence of a margin of interpretation. The perfect construction contract is an illusion because ex ante statements of the actual ground conditions are not feasible. This paper will discuss contractual parameters that must be considered in order to enable an effective adaptation of the contract during excavation. It is therefore necessary to discuss the following topics: decision-making competence, variable remuneration, fair-risk allocation, value engineering and partnering between client and contractor. INTRODUCTION Thinking of tunnel construction processes, engineers’ first (or at least second) association is about ground conditions. When constructing under the surface, the project is directly related to the ground conditions; however, ground conditions are known fairly well in advance. The estimated conditions can be the same or can also differ from the existing ones. A clear view of the conditions is possible only by driving through the section. What Hoek calls “Geological unpredictability which is guaranteed to provide some surprises in even the simplest tunnelling job” is, in addition to contractual issues, one of two critical aspects of modern tunneling (Hoek 1982). Almost no research tries to figure out, what flexibility in this context means and how to approach it in the contracts. Papers dealing with the New Austrian Tunnel Method (NATM) pose some principles to meet the requests for flexibility (cf. Austrian Society for Geomechanics 2011). However, it remains unclear how to create contracts in order to make them “flexible” enough to react to divergent ground conditions."

The concept of Big Data refers to data sets that are so large, variable and/or complex that traditional data processing applications struggle to integrate the data for effective investigation, analysis and value generation. With advances in sensor technology and smarter equipment, the mining industry is experiencing Big Data, and in a different way to how the intelligence and marketing communities experience Big Data. Future mining will bring larger, more complicated and diverse data sets increasing the strain on traditional data integration and investigation techniques. Block caving is an important mining method for the extraction of massive, low-grade ore deposits due to its low operating cost and high production potential, given the right orebody geometry and ground conditions. This paper focuses on block caving due to its increasing popularity and importance in the future economic extraction of multiple commodities. The block cave mining system (BCMS) is a complex interrelation of factors, and due to the reliance on natural processes within the system, it is one of the least understood mining methods. Obtaining information on the factors within the BCMS generates large, complex data sets on various time scales. Each sensor network within the BCMS combines spatial and temporal information with tens to hundreds of recorded parameters. Data sets are quickly moving from multidimensional to n-dimensional. Optimisation of the BCMS is only possible through a holistic analysis approach, thus involving the integration of multiple, diverse, n-dimensional data sets (Big Data). This paper presents a current example BCMS Big Data situation involving 12 sources of information with differences in volume, data format and frequency of data generation. This suitability of virtual reality scientific visualisation (VRSV) as a solution to BCMS Big Data interpretation difficulties is then discussed. These 12 data sets can be effectively integrated using VRSV for intuitive and accelerated investigation of the BCMS. Potential future Big Data within the BCMS is presented involving 20 sources of information resulting from our increased need for monitoring and advancements in technology. Current methods of defining queries may not be suitable within these future complex, multidimensional data sets, and the potential of artificial intelligence algorithms within this system is discussed. These advancements in technology and machine learning lead to the requirement of live data acquisition and analysis. The synthetic fluormicas may be divided on the basis of silicon content into tetrasilicic, trisilicic, and disilicic. Properties of lead and barium disilicic fluormicas were determined to characterize these two representative members of the disilicic group. Properties described include unit-cell parameters from X-ray diffraction, optical data, chemical composition, density, melting point, and mechanical and dielectric properties. Both the lead and the barium micas were typically monoclinic; neither was sufficiently cleavable to yield usable mica splittings. Both yielded polycrystalline, machinable ceramics with excellent mechanical and dielectric properties.

The Coal Creek Preparation Plant is the coal cleaning facility of Mid-Continent Coal and Coke Company. Located three miles west of Redstone, Colorado, and at an elevation of 8,040 feet the preparation plant cleans coal produced at the company's Dutch Creek Mine and L. S. Wood Mine. (See Fig.1.) Current production is at the rate of 2500 tons per day clean coal. Plant capacity is rated 350 TPH raw coal. Reject rates vary with mining conditions from 8% to 25%. Factors which influenced the design of the coal cleaning facility were the characteristics of the coal, the location in a tourist oriented resort area, and the extreme winters of the area. Lack of areas suitable for settling ponds and the necessity of keeping effluent waters out of the fishing streams dictated a closed circuit plant. Severe winter conditions, which last six to seven months out of the year and temperatures which have dropped to 40° F. below zero on occasions demanded that the plant be totally insulated and enclosed indoors.

"INTRODUCTION Retsof mine, adjoining the village of Retsof, Livingston County, New York, is about 5 miles northwest of Geneseo and 55 miles (air-line distance) due east of Buffalo. It is a single-bed rock-salt mine having extensive horizontal workings as much as 2-1/2 miles long and 1 mile wide and has been in continuous operation since 1885. Retsof tine is the largest producing salt mine in North America and is reputed to be the largest active salt mine in the world.Retsof is one of three large salt mines operated by the International Salt Co., Scranton, Pa.; T. Forster Courthope is general manager of Retsof and also of the company's Detroit salt mine in Michigan and has held that position for 27 years. He is assisted by Stanley Martin, general superintendent; R. Goetz, Maintenance superintendent; and John Riordan, mine superin¬tendent. All are old-timers at Retsof and, according to Courthope, contri¬buted the ""lion's share in bringing the mine to its present standard of safety.ACKNOWLEDGEMENTThis circular was made possible by the generous cooperation of T. Prior research has suggested that the source of respirable silica dust in underground coal mines is typically the immediate top or bottom lithology adjacent to the mined seam, not mineral matter bound within the mined coal bed. Geochemical analyses were applied in an effort to identify the specific source rock of respirable quartz dust in coal mines. The analyses also demonstrate the compositional changes that take place in the generation of the respirable dust fraction from parent rock material. All six mine sites were mining coal with relatively low mineral matter content, although two mines were operating in the Fire Clay coal bed which contains a persistent tonstein. Interpretations of Ca, Mg, Mn, Na, and K concentrations strongly suggest that the top strata above the mined seam is the primary source of mineral dust produced during mining. One site indicates a mixed or bottom source, possibly due to site specific conditions. Respirable dust compositional analyses suggest a direct relationship between the quantity of mineral Si and the quantity of quartz Si. A similar relationship was not found in either the top or bottom rocks adjacent to the mined seam. An apparent loss of elemental Al was noted in the respirable dust fraction when compared to potential parent rock sources. Elemental Al is present in top and bottom rock strata within illite, kaolinite, feldspar, and chlorite. A possible explanation for loss of Al in the respirable dust samples is the removal of clays and possibly chlorite minerals. It is expected that removal of this portion of the Al bearing mineral matter occurs during rock abrasion and dust transport prior to dust capture on the samplers.

The solid-acid character of the activated montmorillonite is imparted by the manufacturing process, giving it unique properties that are exploited in these industries. Several international companies and a multitude of local clay producers are focusing on improving the efficiency of their standard and specialized products. This paper will describe the use of acid-activated montmorillonite in traditional sorbent applications, as a solid acid catalyst, and other new uses.

"The history of Duluth commences with Daniel de Greysolon du Lhut, one of the explorers of the Upper Mississippi who came to the head of the lakes in the summer of 1679. Radisson and Groseillier, and Claude Allouez, a Jesuit priest, are supposed to have visited the head of the lakes, -but there is no authentic record previous to that of du Lhut.In 1792, the fur traders established a fort at Fond du Lac, fifteen miles up the St. Louis River from Lake Superior, but within the limits of the present city •of Duluth. In the early 50's, there were a few scattering settlers at Oneota and around the George Stuntz trading post on Minnesota point. In 1855-6, the settlement on Minnesota point was called Duluth, commemorating the name du Lhut, and organized as a town in 1857. The first board of trustees and town council consisted of -William Nettleton, J. B. Culver; Robert E. Jefferson, Grin W. Rice and William Old: In 1870, the city of Duluth was incorporated, and five years later a portion of the same territory was incorporated as the village of Duluth, and the two municipal corporations were still in existence on March 1, 1887, when the city and the village of Duluth were incorporated as the present city.The first saw mill in Duluth was erected in 1856-57, on the present site of the ship canal. It cut logs from a virgin forest at the upper end of Minnesota point.The first railroad was built to the head of the lakes in 1870. The charter for this road had been granted in 1861 to the Lake Superior and Mississippi Railroad Company, afterward called the St. Paul and Duluth, and which is now a part of the Northern Pacific Railroad."

Shock tubes are used to simulate large-scale arena explosions without the use of full-scale arena sites that utilize large quantities of explosives. Instead, small explosive charges can be used to drive shock tubes. When this is done, the geometries of the explosive charges can alter the resulting pressure time curve. A common geometry chosen for the explosive charge is a sphere in order to be congruent with the spherical shockwave that emanates symmetrically in three dimensions from the detonation point. This paper reports on the findings from experiments that study the effects of altering the charge geometries and explosive types while keeping the TNT equivalency constant. Peak pressures and durations were affected by these changes. Directional phenomena are exaggerated by the use of certain charge shapes and detonation points. The speed of the detonation front in the explosive being greater than the speed of the shockwave in air played a critical role in the resulting pressure time waveforms. Waveform manipulation can be used to generate job specific waveforms that ultimately benefit the shock tube operators and their clients.

Let me open my remarks this morning by stating how we as legislators and as natives of the western coal-producing states feel about our role in becoming one of the major producers of coal-related energy and chemical products is similar to the groom at his shotgun wedding. We are apprehensive, to say the least, as to the ultimate outcome. We do not have complete freedom of choice. It will certainly change our quality of life. We are concerned about the increase in population, but are realistic enough to recognize that we are forced to go through with the marriage. Other alternatives could be worse than the bride. Also, we were aware that this could occur, but we did not plan on it being this sudden. Or, put another way, we have two groups advising us that our choices are cattle or coal, food or fuel, pollution and people or pure air, wheat or gas, clean water or prosperity, noise or solitude.

Recovery of uranium in conventional ion exchange circuits, using strong base or weak base resins containing quaternary or tertiary amine functional groups, is based on an anion exchange mechanism. In saline liquors, chloride competes with uranium for the active resin sites and reduces resin loading. This results in significant negative impacts on the IX process in terms of plant throughput and operating costs. In this paper we present the results of a study on the recovery of uranium from an acidic in situ leach liquor containing approximately 9 g/L chloride. A range of resins was tested, and a high capacity strong base resin was identified with significantly enhanced loading compared to conventional resins. Other process-relevant criteria such as loading kinetics and elution efficacy are also discussed. The process developed was successfully tested during a recent ion exchange pilot plant operated in conjunction with a field-leach trial.

AN ounce of prevention is worth A a pound of cure' is an old proverb that has sometimes been forgotten in programs having to do with the health of workmen. Realization of the truth of this maxim is increasing, however, and today the iron-mining industry, with which I am particularly concerned, is becoming more alive to the prevention of illness and the conservation of health, thus decreasing the need for treatment after diagnosis has established its necessity. The healthy workman is the happy, efficient workman, and new programs tending to make him more health-minded are being put into operation. Preventive medicine is less costly than corrective medicine, to say nothing of the better results obtained. Periodic physical examinations, with close follow-up attention when required, have reduced the time lost because of illness, workmen's compensation costs, and group-insurance benefits for nonindustrial disabilities.

The potential of hydrogen peroxide explosives was introduced to Thomas Gustavsson and Robert Håkland by Dr Miguel Araos through his development of hydrogen peroxide gel compositions (HPG). In 2020, Thomas and Robert developed a concept project with Boliden Minerals and received Swedish government funding to evaluate HPG technology in a mine environment. The project showed HPG reacted violently with mine mineralization and concluded that HPGs did not offer a commercial solution due to safety concerns. Thomas and Robert engaged with Stefan Nilsson to develop hydrogen peroxide emulsion (HPE) compositions and the process techniques to manufacture them. In 2021, laboratory work produced a promising low carbon intensity, nitrate free, ammonia free, emulsion formulation based on industrial grade hydrogen peroxide and a fuel-emulsifier phase. Design and construction of an HPE pilot plant and underground charging unit commenced. The manufacture of hydrogen peroxide emulsion shares several similarities with the production of nitrate-based emulsions in that the plant is a facility to blend a strong oxidizer solution with a liquid fuel phase into a finished emulsion. A key differentiator between HPE and nitrate-based emulsion is that the manufacture of HPE is a cold production technology in that neither the oxidizer phase (HP) nor the fuel-emulsifier phase requires high temperature heating to prepare raw materials. A successful proof-of-concept HPE evaluation ran from April 2022 to October 2022 at Boliden’s Kankberg underground mine in Sweden. This evaluation demonstrated HPE technology's safety, performance, production, handling, and indicative environmental benefits.

Comminution is the process by which rock or ore is reduced to a size where the liberation of the minerals is maximized without changing the chemical or physical properties of the rock. Comminution accounts for about 50% of all energy that mines use (Klein et al., 2018). Growing demands from stakeholders and shareholders for sustainable development and CO2 reduction will increase the need for energy-efficient comminution. Ores with different mineralogical characteristics, textures, strengths, apparent stiffness, and mass-specific fracture energies need to be processed with a specific, new, and efficient comminution technology to increase the production and profitability of mining companies. The adoption of crusher wear parts built with new materials, such as non-Hadfield manganese steel or synthetic materials or traditional manganese with wear-resistant components, could improve the efficiency of the crushers, reduce downtime, increase production, improve the desired P80 (the aperture through which 80% of the product will pass) product size distribution, and enhance mine safety.

Open stoping has become a popular mining method in hard rock mines, not only due to the safety of the method as a non-entry approach, but also because of the high extraction rate and low costs. At mine sites, stope performance is evaluated by calculating stope overbreak using the stability chart. However, limitations of the stability chart regarding the precision of the predictions, nonconsideration of factors such as the influence of blasting, and the exclusion of underbreak have led to non-optimal designs. The capabilities of today's computers have increased the amount of data being collected and the power of models being built. This article presents a step towards a new stope design approach where stope overbreak and underbreak are measured and georeferenced using octrees at an approximately cubic metre resolution and predicted using multivariate statistical models (partial least square, linear discriminant analysis, and random forest). Results show that overbreak and underbreak location along the design surface and their magnitude are predicted with good precision using a random forest model. These predictions are used to build the expected geometry of the open stope. The resolution of the data and the use of multivariate analysis has enabled the prediction of variation in stope performance along the design surface, going well beyond the simple qualitative per stope face prediction provided by a traditional stability chart approach.
