Coeur d'Alene Mines is a precious metals producer which is dedi- cated to growth through it's exploration and acquisitions efforts. We foster and support these activities by providing our staff with long-term financial support, the encouragement to proceed with their projects and ideas, and a firm belief that we will be successful. Coeur's corporate headquarters are located in beautiful, historic Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. Our main mining operations are Rochester, locate near Lovelock, Nevada, Coeur Mine,located near Wallace, Idaho, and Thunder Mountain, located in central Idaho. Our Ken- sington Gold project is located about 45 miles north of Juneau in southeast Alaska. We have exploration offices located in Reno, Nevada, and Santiago, Chile. At this time, Coeurd'Alene Mines produces precious metals from mines located in the United States. Our Rochester open-pit opera- tion, which is 100 per cent owned and operated, is located in Nevada. Presently, this operation produces 5.5 to 6 million ounces of silver per year and 60-70,000 ounces of gold. We move 65,000 to 70,000 tons of rock per day of which about 23,000 tons is ore. The ore is crushed, stacked on permanent heaps and leached. The recovery is by Merrill-Crowe. Although the average grade is rela- tively low, 1.4 ounces per ton silver and 0.012 ounces per ton Au, the operation is very low cost. Our cost of production is less than $4.00 per silver equivalent ounce. Rochester is anunusual operation in that the crushed rock stacks without much compaction and the ores are easily leached. The final height on our heaps will be about 220', and overall recovery will be about 55 per cent of the silver and about 85 per cent of the gold. Reserves at Rochester are expanding and are now adequate for at least fifteen years of opera- Tion.

A NOTED ordnance engineer once said to a friend, in speaking of the production of great steel guns, "How is it? We design our guns with a factor of safety of eight, and the guns burst." The vague way in which internal stresses and strains in iron and steel are often considered and spoken of makes it worth-while to examine them, as to their nature, their causes and results, how they may, for useful purposes, be advantageously dealt with, and how, when detrimental or dangerous, they may be reduced or kept within harmless proportions. Rankine defines ?strain " as a change of form or dimensions of a solid or liquid mass produced by a stress. This definition seems not intended to cover strains due to internal stresses, and it will help us in the present inquiry to consider strain as a tendency to change as well as an actual change of form. Internal strains in iron and steel are the result of stresses within the mass of the piece, some parts pulling and others pushing in resistance to them; or, in other words, some parts are in tension and some in compression, each part striving to relieve itself from strain and make the piece assume a form in which all parts are at rest. Subdivision, so that each part could relieve its strain by motion relative to the other parts, would, if carried out far enough, practically obliterate strain. The internal strains we are now to consider are not those due to the stresses of the service which the piece is rendering, either alone or as, a part of a structure, which may be termed service-strains, but those which originate or at least are contained in the piece itself. The Galatia Mine is a dual-seam underground coal mine located in Saline County, IL. In 1984, it became the first coal mine to be permitted by the Illinois Department of Mines and Minerals to operate diesel equipment underground. And it is one of the larger underground coal mines in the nation to use diesel equipment. From the beginning, Kerr-McGee determined that diesel equipment offered the best approach to the safe and productive development and operation of the Galatia Mine. The flexibility of this equipment and its ability to promptly respond to changing conditions and mining locations made its use desirable for building this large dual-seam coal mine. The mine had a planned nominal annual capacity of 3.6 Mt/a (4 million stpy) and would employ more than 500 people. Galatia's current reserves are estimated at 231 Mt (255 million st) of recoverable coal from two seams of high-quality, high-volatile bituminous coal. The Harrisburg No. 5 seam is shipped primarily as a low-sulfur steam coal or as a metallurgical blend stock. It is also used in the pulverized coal injection (PCI) process for steel making. The Herrin No. 6 seam is a medium-sulfur coal. Annual production is shown in Fig. 1. A good indicator of a mine's success is employee productivity improvement. For many reasons - the proper use of diesel equipment, the introduction of longwalls and increased employee ex¬perience - Galatia employees have achieved a steady growth in annual productivity (Fig. 1) while maintaining an exceptional safety record.

Much interesting data on cemented carbides has been published over a period of years which, when classified and pieced together, gives a clear picture of this special branch of powder metallurgy. This is an attempt to present the essential information in an ordered account.THE HARD CARBIDES-THEIR PROPERTIES AND PREPARATIONThe so-called hard or refractory carbides are the carbides of a number of metals which are grouped together in the Periodic Classification. These metals are in groups IV, V and VI. They are titanium, vanadium, chromium, zirconium, niobium (columbium), molybdenum, hafnium, tantalum and tungsten. These carbides have attracted the attention of chemists because of their remarkable properties. They possess very high melting points, and are rather difficult to prepare in the pure state. Their outstanding propertyis their extreme hardness, which they share with certain other carbides, such as those of silicon and boron. In addition, these compounds possess distinctly metallic properties, such as lustre (in fused specimens) and high thermal conductivities.(l)t They are capable of forming alloys in two ways:1. With metals, particularly those of the iron group. 2. With each other (a case of solid solubility).The constitution of these substances is not that of ordinary salts, which obey the usual valency rules, but must be likened to that of certain intermetallic compounds. Actually they are "interstitial" compounds(2), that is, they are formed from the ordinary metallic lattice by the insertion of the relatively small carbon atoms in the interstices.. The energy required to fill the lattice completely is high, and this explains the difficulty often found in obtaining the exact stoicheiometric compound. Thus the carbides can have a range of composition, and can be considered as solutions of carbon in the respective metals.Physical Properties of the CarbidesThe hardness of these compounds is so great that it is difficult to compare the individual compounds on this basis. Becker(l) gives values on Moh's scale, which are not very accurate and are of no great value. Burden(3) has reproduced a diagram by Hatfield which indicates that the cemented carbides are between 1,400 and 2,000 on the Vickers diamond scale. However, the pure carbides are harder, tungsten carbide being about 2,200. Hoyt(4) describes a method of measuring hardness applicable to powdered specimenswhereby the powder is rubbed on a standard block of cemented tungsten carbide under standard conditions, and the rate of wear is determined. INCREASING attention has been given in the last decade to the possibilities of mine leasing in the West. The practice as described in this article does not refer to the leasing of entire properties for corporate operation. It is intended to deal rather with the advantages and problems incident to leasing portions of properties to individuals who themselves, individually or in groups, do the actual mining and transportation of the ore. These individuals are sometimes called "leasers" and sometimes called "tributors." The contracts under which they work set up an independent relationship of lessor and leaser, between themselves and the mineowner or operator. This relationship has many advantages to both sides over those created by the ordinary relationship of employer and employe. From the standpoint of the owners there is no liability on independent contractors for industrial injuries, social security taxes, unemployment taxes, or the manifold restrictions of the Federal Labor Relations and Wage Hour Acts and similar state acts where they exist. As the leaser's income depends on the quantity and quality of ore produced, there is a distinct incentive for maximum production of a good grade of ore. This in turn promotes careful mining of the areas under lease. Ordinarily in mining, labor cost is a high percentage of the total cost of operation. Under a leasing system, even if the leasers be allowed to retain half of the gross values that they produce, and the owner or operator gets half, in the case of marginal ore bodies this is ordinarily more than the lessor would realize if the property were worked by day labor. Oxidation of chalcopyrite concentrate and two low-iron copper mattes were studied using a laboratory scale laminar-flow furnace simulating the phenomena taking place in different zones of the reaction shaft of a flash smelting furnace. In the experiments, screened fractions were fed into the furnace and sampled after short reaction time intervals by quenching them into a water film. Experimental conditions included temperatures of 1100 and 1300°C with reaction gas oxygen contents from 21 to 75 vol.%. Samples were analysed chemically for Cu, Fe and S to define removal rate of sulphur. Optical and scanning electron microscopy with EDS-analyser were used to examine the samples. In this paper, oxidation kinetics as well as ignition of particles are discussed. Changes in particle morphology, size, and composition are viewed to closely define the proceeding of the oxidation, and, consequently, to compose a detailed model of dust formation and reaction mechanisms. Data obtained in the experiments broadens the knowledge of physical and chemical phenomena in flash reactions and serves as reference for computer simulations.

The Jamaica Mining Legislation requires the bauxite companies operating in the island to reclaim all mined-out lands (except those legitimately excluded) to the level of agricultural or pastoral productivity, which existed prior to the commencement of mining. If it is not possible to reclaim a mined-out area the companies are required to reclaim an equivalent area of some other land which had not previously been used for agricultural purposes, or alternatively, pay to the government the sum of $120 (US) for every acre of land mined in the particular sector. In the seventeen years since the programme commenced the companies have in general chosen to reclaim most of the mined-out lands, rather than the cheaper alternative. However, the ultimate success of the programme will depend not only on actual reclamation per se but moreso the productivity of the rehabilitated lands. There are a number of reasons why the accent has to be placed on productivity of the lands. The first is that Jamaica is a small country (4,450 square miles) with a population of nearly 2 million people. Because of its mountainous terrain it is estimated that only 35% of the land area is cultivable in crops and pastures; hence this limited area, as well as that which can be reclaimed, must be made highly productive in order to support local and export demands. The Mining companies own over 200,000 acres of land, and of this acreage, it is conservatively estimated that about 75,000 will be affected by mining and will be reclaimed. As such, the use of the land after mining can have an important bearing on Jamaica's future agricultural productivity. This article revisits global projections made in 1981of eight metallic and fertilizer minerals for the year 2000. The objectives here are to quantify the differences between the projected and observed levels of consumption for the year 2000 for eight of the 26 nonfuel minerals covered in the earlier study. An attempt is then made to attribute these (often) large differences to the major determinants of minerals demand — income, technological, regulatory and other policy changes, and changes in the recycling rates of the metallic minerals. The eight minerals covered are aluminum, copper, iron, mercury, nickel, phosphate rock, potash and tin. This summary article presents the actual population, gross domestic product (GDP) and per capita GDP changes from 1970 to 2000, compared with the projected rates for these important determinants of mineral use, along with the observed growth rates of minerals consumption for the eight nonfuel minerals included in this study. When the projections are compared with the observed global consumption levels for the year 2000, the differences range from +43 percent for nickel to +229 percent for potash.

The implementation of technological advancements in flotation is key to optimize performance in mining operations. Consequently, flotation cell’s performance is highly dependent on the effectiveness of the mixing mechanism. A more efficient flotation mixing mechanism is likely to improve metallurgical performance and optimize energy consumption, which is the motivation for Metso’s journey to develop the latest iteration of FloatForce®. Looking to test the new design at plant scale, Metso approached the Kennecott Copperton concentrator, which is continuously looking for different venues to improve metallurgical performance. In this context, a test campaign was conducted to implement this new flotation mixing mechanism in their rougher circuit during 2024. The industrial trial consisted of several sampling campaigns assessing different operational parameters for comparison purposes around a 300m3 flotation cell. The effect of the new flotation mixing mechanism on the cell’s power draw was also studied. The results of this trial at Kennecott are presented in this paper. Overall new flotation mixing mechanism, FloatForce+ was seen to perform as well as the original FloatForce.

PETROLEUM ENGINEERING deals with the production, transportation, and refining of crude oil. Refining is chiefly the work of the chemical engineer; production, that of the petroleum engineer. Production engineering only is discussed in this paper. Petroleum production engineering is closest related to and, in fact, is a branch of mining engineering. Formerly, many petroleum engineers were trained as mining engineers or mining geologists. The profession is related also to mechanical and civil engineering to about the same extent that mining engineering is. Petroleum production draws upon the mechanical branch for drilling and pumping machinery and upon civil engineering for the construction of transportation lines, water supplies, and water-disposal plants. Fundamentally, petroleum production engineering deals with the removal of the oil from the reservoir rocks, just as mining is concerned with the removal of ore. The process of oil production demands a specialized knowledge just as distinct from mechanical and civil engineering as mining is distinct from operating a Diesel engine. Even though the chief tools of the petroleum engineer are the drill and the pump, these may be of little avail, and certainly not efficient, if their selection and use is not based on a knowledge of the physical chemistry of oil, the geology of the formations, the structure of the oil sand, the hydrodynamics of the reservoir, and the interrelation of all these many factors.

Three electrorefining cells were designed to investigate various factors associated with the electrorefining of reject - grade titanium sponge . Operation of the cells provided information on cell design as well as on how design and operating variables affected the quality of the titanium product . A sodium chloride - titanium chloride electrolyte was used , and the electrolyte chambers had capacities ranging from 400 to 3,500 pounds of molten salt . Major factors investigated were electrolyte composition , temperature and useful life , effect of various cathode shapes and materials of construction , methods for removing cathode deposits , effect of current density and cell potential , and the mechanics of deposit growth and crystal morphology . One of the cells was in intermittent operation over a 4 - year period and produced 2 tons of refined titanium . A product with a hardness of 80 or less Bhn (Brinell hardness number ) was consistently and easily obtained . Some metal with a hardness of less than 60 Bhn was produced . In one of the cells in which the electrolyte was held at operating temperature with an internal heater an ac input of 25 kw maintained 3,500 pounds of electrolyte at 850 ° C , but with an external heater 35 kw was required to maintain 400 pounds at 850° C.

During the period 1979 thru 1982, Multi Mineral Corporation conducted a mining I research program at the United States Department of the Interior's Bureau of Mines Oil Shale Mining Environmental Research Facility in the Central Piceance Creek Basin, Rio Blanco County, Colorado. The program consisted of mining, environmental and geotechnical research data and, the results are described in this report.

The most abundant fuel resource in the U.S.A. is also the most under-utilized. Proven reserves of bituminous coal, sub-bituminous and lignite constitute from 60% to 90% of our total fossil fuel reserves -- dependent upon the parameters used by the analyst making the estimate. Despite this ample supply, bituminous coal provided only 20% of U. S. energy consumption in 1967 and 1968, this dropping to 17.57 in 1971 and 1972. By 1978, according to my projections, 16.7% of the Nation's mechanical energy will come from bituminous coal. However, our energy needs are growing at such a rate that the 20.6% provided by bituminous in 1967 equalled 480 million tons while the 16.7% of U. S. consumption visualized for 1978 will require nearly 650 million tons. In order to view coal's position with perspective in this developing energy crunch, it is necessary to examine the total energy situation. To this end, I have prepared a couple of tables which you should have before you. I chose this procedure rather than slides because I would need to utilize an entire wall to make the data visible to an audience. Therefore, I refer you to the long sheet entitled "U. S. Energy Consumption - Trillion Btu - 1967-1978." As you can see from the heading, I am confining my treatment of the problem to the intermediate term. In the long run, if we are willing to pay the cost, we can do a lot of things, including the complete conversion of coal into a sulfur-free fuel.

Consideration of the processing plant operational envelope is a key factor in production scheduling,and therefore mine planning, for any mining operation. In many cases hard-wired or regressionbased tonnage-grade-recovery relationships are used as mine planning constraints and as a means of valuing the system output. In extensions of this type of approach, various regressions can be used to describe throughput limits, based on a number of global metallurgical parameters.The ultimate position for the optimisation of a mine plan and production schedule is to have a full process plant model running as an integrated part of the mine planning exercise. A plant model suitable for this needs to have all the required sensitivities to input parameters such asfragmentation, grade, mineralogy, strength and hardness. The model then needs to convert these to performance measures for the plant, which include recovery, throughput, product size distributions, energy consumption, water use and operating cost.In this paper an approach is outlined that takes this view and then goes beyond it to provide a full, time-based bottleneck identifi cation and valuation tool.Using such an approach it becomes possible to run mine plans and production schedules in windows of days, weeks, months and over the life-of-mine with a time-enabled process model acting as the active constraint. In this way virtual bottlenecks can be identifi ed for various mine plans and schedules well ahead of time. "In the Blind River area Proterozoic clastic and sedimentary rocks and minor volcanic rocks (The Huronian Supergroup) uncomformably overlie and trangress northwards over dominantly granitic Archean terrane (2500 + Ma) and are intruded by Nipissing Diabase (2ll5 Ma). Later deformation and metamorphic events are recognized. The developing depositional basin was controlled by the incipient Great Lakes Tectonic Zone marginal to the Algoman Craton.The Matinenda Formation (basal Huronian) comprises northwards-derived fluvial arkose, quartzite, and pyritic, uraniferous oligomictic conglomerate which contained in 1981 some two-thirds of Canada's uranium resources. Production to December 1981 from Elliot Lake totalled 98.3 thousand tonnes U for an average recovered grade of 0.1% U with an additional 671 tonnes U recovered by leaching at Agnew Lake. The remaining resources are at lower grades. Some thorium and yttrium have been produced. Minor amounts of gold reflect the paucity in the source area. Gold is better-developed in the Huronian north of Sudbury reflecting the local source area.The conglomerate beds lie in southeasterly-striking zones controlled by basement topography down sedimentation from uraniferous Archean granite. Uraninite textures, the distribution of monazite, and local enrichment by reworking indicate a syngenetic, probably placer, origin of the mineralization. ""Brannerite"" has formed by solution of uranium from the margins of the uraninite grains and redeposition on the original titaniferous minerals. Penecontemporaneous volcanics may have been a source for sulphur in some of the pyrite and of trace amounts of Co, Ni and Au. Some pyrite may be detrital, some may be authigenic and some introduced.Drab coloured rocks, uranium and sulphide mineralization, the presence of hydrocarbon (thucholite) and a post-Archean regolith formed under reducing conditions have been cited as evidence of an early Precambrian reducing environment extended to the atmosphere. Sedimentary features indicating fast-flowing water and possibly a cold climate imply that the uraninite would be exposed to whatever oxygen was present in the atmosphere under conditions which would inhibit complete solution. In the upper Huronian, red beds and in the Lorrain Formation a monazite - iron oxide assemblage and copper mineralization indicate more oxidizing conditions. . Similar uranium deposits occur at Agnew Lake and in the basal Huronian north of Sudbury there are minor uranium and gold values.Provenance, lack of complete oxidation, transportation and depositional processes, redistribution during diagenesis and possibly low grade metamorphism, and the lack of post-depositional destructive processes are the dominant factors in the formation and preservation of the ores. The modified placer theory of genesis is well entrenched and an exploration model for such deposits throughout the world is well-documented.Research continues on mineralogy and textures of the ores, detailed sedimentology of the ores and their host rocks, with particular emphasis on: provenance area, the influence of early Precambrian mineralization patterns on the mineralization present in the Huronian both in space and in time, fluvial sedimentation and diagenesis. Expansion and reopening of the mines of the Elliot Lake camp should facilitate further studies."
