Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) threaten the wellbeing and livelihood of a large number of construction workers incurring a significant cost to society. We present a new method to monitor and diagnose MSD risks in the workplace. The sensing unit of the system is an optical encoder encompassed within a non-intrusive exoskeleton to measure the joint angle of interest. This sensor can be applied to ball-and-socket and hinge-type joints of the human body, such as the shoulder, elbow, and knee joints. The system is contactless and does not require markers or cameras. Angle measurements are acquired directly without mathematical post-processing, thereby avoiding numerical noise and drift challenges. The system is a simple, robust, and deployable, but it currently lacks resolution of parallel degrees of freedom.

"This paper summarizes the present-day usage of computers in the mining-metallurgical industry. The industry appears to be following a path taken by other industries in improving the operation of processing plants, production schedules, grade control and haulage performance. A reduction in the cost of computers and computing has been a significant factor.An attempt is made to forecast the future of computers in our industry. Such developments as time-sharing, mini-computers, and easy-to-understand process-oriented languages will lead to wider usage. Considerable strides have been made in the use of computers for laboratory data acquisition. In general, the implementation of new methods, new techniques and new equipment will require plant personnel to develop new skills. The universities are meeting this challenge by re-structuring curricula and offering special courses. Most vendors of computers already offer special courses within their own facilities at a customer's plant."

In 1998, approximately 57,000 tons of titanium metal was consumed in the form of mill products (1). Only about 5% of the 4 million tons of titanium minerals consumed each year is used to produce titanium metal, with the remainder primarily used to produce titanium dioxide pigment. Titanium metal production is primarily based on the direct chlorination of futile to produce titanium tetrachloride, which is then reduced to metal using the Kroll magnesium reduction process. The use of titanium is tied to its high strength-to-weight ratio and corrosion resistance. Aerospace is the largest application for titanium. In this paper, we discuss all aspects of the titanium industry from ore deposits through extraction to present and future applications. The methods of both primary (mining of ore, extraction, and purification) and secondary (forming and machining) operations will be analyzed. The chemical and physical properties of titanium metal will be briefly examined. Present and future applications for titanium will be discussed. Finally, the economics of titanium metal production also are analyzed as well as the advantages and disadvantages of various alternative extraction methods.

1. Domestic Production and Use: In 1982, 13 companies operated 30 primary aluminum reduction plants, with 3 firms accounting for 55% of production. Washington, Oregon, and Montana accounted for 34% of the production; Texas, Louisiana, Missouri, and Arkansas 18%; Tennessee, Alabama, South Carolina, and North Carolina 14%; other central and eastern States 34%. Based on published producer prices, output of primary metal in 1982 was valued at over $5.5 billion. Aluminum consumption by 25,000 firms was centered in the East Central United States. Packaging accounted for an estimated 39% of domestic consumption in 1982, transportation 20%, building 14%, electrical 8%, consumer durables 8%, and other uses 11%.

WE have just heard what must be regarded as a thoughtful, constructive and somewhat painful analysis of the financial function of our industry. While thinking about this, it is interesting to reflect on the conditions which have stunted the growth of the financial side of our affairs. Mining must be regarded as a wealthy business. •while immeasurable grub takes and development budgets have been lost, there can be little argument that a productive ore-body nearly always produces the type of wealth that breeds some extravagance. I recognize that this statement can be attacked from many sides, but an historical comparison with a commercial enterprise involving similar investment will demonstrate what I mean. However, these old times are be-ginning to disappear for a variety of reasons. High amongst these are: ( l) Increased costs of exploration. (2) Remoteness of many new finds. (3) Fixed or declining metal prices (particularly when expressed in constant dollars). ( 4) Constant demands for higher wages.

The Illinois State Geological Survey's program in industrial minerals is twofold-the gathering of information on mineral raw materials and the generation of data on the use of these materials. The first function is carried out by the Industrial Minerals Section and the Clay Resources and Clay Mineral Technology Section of the Geological Group, and the second is the responsibility of the Chemical Engineering Section of the Chemical Group. Gathering in formation on raw materials includes both mapping of resources and fundamental geological research. Recent and current research projects include studies relating lithologies of limestones to their physical properties, investigation of sulfur dioxide reactivity of various types of limestone, lithostratigraphic studies of limestones of Mississippian age, investigations of heavy minerals in Cretaceous, Tertiary, and Pleistocene sands, studies of the environments of clay deposition, electron microscope studies of clays and limestones, and investigation of long-term expansion in ceramic products. A relatively recent development that relates more to dissemination of information than to research is environmental geology. This affects the Survey's industrial minerals program chiefly by stimulating the study of rock and mineral resources in metropolitan areas and reporting the results for the land- use planner as well as the engineer or mineral producer. The Survey's program of research on the use of industrial minerals was expanded and diversified in 1966. Incorporating a minerals beneficiation lab, the program is designed to develop new uses for existing mineral resources and to assist producers in implementing these ideas: Projects of the minerals engineering program have included the separation of a feldspar concentrate from certain glacial outwash and river sands, recovery of kaolinite from the waste from silica sand operations, development of the use of an Illinois clay as a binder for pellets, and investigations into the use of fly ash and fluorspar mine tailings.

"All mine shaft conveyances in Canada and most of the United States that are supported by a single hoist rope or attachment point and used for transporting persons are required by regulation to be equipped with safety catches and mechanisms. These safety mechanisms, commonly called safety dogs, are designed to stop and hold a free falling conveyance, with a full personnel load, in the event of a hoist rope or attachment component failure. The conveyance’s safety mechanism must be tested under dynamic conditions before it is used to transport personnel. This paper will discuss free-fall testing and it’s results on conveyance free-fall tests performed in the test tower at INCO Limited, Sudbury, Ontario.Topics covered will be free-fall tests on various wood types such as B.C. fir, Karri wood and Trusjoist MacMillan Limited Parallamwood (PSL), comparison of deceleration rates versus free-fall velocity and the influence of safety dog tooth design on deceleration rates."

Parts I, II, and III-A of the series have been issued as Information Circulars 6935, 6840, 6948 , and 6957; Part I defines and classifies dusts, indicates sources of exposure, and describes the physiological effects of breathing dusts; Part II-A discusses the principal dust factors producing pulmonary pathology and methods of determination of dust in air; Part II-B presents data on the engineering and medical control in the prevention of dust diseases and general recommendations for their control in industry; and Part III-A deals with the economic and legal aspects of dust diseases in industry.

Sodium carbonate, Na2CO3, more commonly known as soda ash, is the most important of the alkalies. Sulfuric acid is the only heavy chemical, Soda ash enters the market either as the natural product or as a manufactured derivative of common salt. Notwithstanding their common occurrence in closed basins of the Western States, natural sodas are produced at present by only four firms, all in the same California area, and satisfy only 4 percent of domestic demand for soda ash; soda ash made from salt supplies 96 percent of the requirements. The impossibility in wartime of routing all westbound American shipping through the Panama Cami.l has curtailed Pacific Coast receipts of soda ash and-increased the importance of local resources of natural carbonates. One of the most promising of ·these is the recently discovered trona (sodium sesquicarbonate)· deposit 2o·mnes· west of Green River, Wyo. Reserves are likely to run into hundreds ·of million·s of tons, and the deposit probably could be worked by the room-and~pillar· system of mining, like common salt or coal. • • Raw materials ·ne·cessary for manufacturing synthetic soda ash occur closely associated in m·afiy parts· bf the United 8tates. Almost unlimited resources of salt in brines and in rock-salt depbsits are located near limestone quarries in many areas. Large surface mining projects in sparsely populated regions of the West have the potential to create disruptions in an area's social and economic character with potential effects on man that can far outweigh the physical and ecological effects on man's environment. The data and analyses involved in addressing the socioeconomic issues are additional to those traditionally associated with surface coal mining, such as those concerning land reclamation and water quality. Appropriate socioeconomic studies in conjunction with mine-planning can identify the potential problem areas in order that project measures can be taken to maximize the beneficial impacts and minimize the adverse effects of surface coal mining. The information required to conduct such socioeconomic analyses, available data sources, and the applicable analyses are described. Overall impacts of some proposed Western surface mines are summarized and potential mitigating steps discussed.

Over the decades, mine and mineral processing plant operations for the most part, have been found to have had adverse impacts on the environment. At the same time, mineral processing and mining operations produce mineral products that are indispensable to modern society. Thus, the sector has desirable and undesirable attributes simultaneously. The situation presents itself as a contradiction (i.e.) the mineral processing and mining operations are wanted by society, and at the same time unwanted by society. The existing methods of addressing the issues raised above have evidently not been very successful in reducing the opposition to new projects and to the related activities such as land acquisition. This paper attempts to show the relevance and applicability of TRIZ for addressing the issue. TRIZ, or Teoriya Rezheniya Isobretatelski Zadach, is a Russian acronym meaning Theory of Inventive Problem Solving. TRIZ is a powerful tool that can be usefully applied to resolve such contradictions, using resources usually available within the system of interest. Accordingly, this paper introduces the issue background, followed by an introduction to some key concepts of TRIZ such as the 40 principles, separation principles and directed evolution. The paper goes on to apply the 40 principles to two case studies. The results show that TRIZ could be a useful tool to generate potentially innovative and sustainable approaches. Its most appropriate position would be as a supplement to current decision-making procedures, and as a validation tool to review existing solutions for possible improvements. "Conventional design criteria assume that the fracture strength of a structural material exceeds its yield strength. Fracture below the design load is not expected, y et many structures have failed in this way. The causes of the fractures are almost always discontinuities such as cracks and welding defects. Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics (LEFM or simply 'fracture mechanics') provides an analytical framework for assessing the influence of sharp defects on the load-bearing capability of a structure. Fracture mechanics techniques have reached the point of acceptance by ASME Design Codes for nuclear components, and ASTM Standards now include well-defined rules for measuring fracture toughness. Starting with a simple equation which relates applied stress and crack size, the influence of the material's thickness and yield strength can be calculated. Thus, the size of defect which will cause failure under the applied stress may be determined. Armed with this information, the metallurgist can assess the safety of a structure from the viewpoints of non-destructive testing standards, construction standards and conditions of operation throughout its service life."

Chromium recovery from wet-blue offal trimmings and shavings can be done with substantial chemical cost gains by incineration at 600° C for 5 hr. Pretreating the offal with 0.5 M Na2C03 and air-drying prior to incineration produce Cr04 .By simply incinerating the offal, without pretreatment, an ash containing water insoluble Cr203 was produced. The Cr203 in the ash was purified by leaching with water. Chromium and crude protein were efficiently extracted from offal using 5 pct Na103, 5 pct H2S04, and 3 pct NaCl at 40° C. This procedure was effective but expensive. Satisfactory leather as to odor, appearance and shrinkage temperature was made from chromium recovered from wet-blue offal by incineration and by extraction. Chromium conservation is possible by recycling chromium liquors and by precipitating chromium from spent tanning liquors prior to combining these liquors with other tannery wastes. Combining chromium liquors with other wastes introduces contaminants that make chromium recovery and reuse difficult. Leaching sludges with H2SO4 produced marginal chemical cost gains. Leather tanned with these solutions had satisfactory shrinkage temperature but the sludge odors and iron contamination were objectionable.

A comprehensive review of published research was carried out to identify methods for teaching and assessing critical but nonroutine skills needed for coping with emergency situations. Specific methods for assessing critical skills proficiency in aviation, medicine, organization management, the military, and other industrial/technical workplaces are described. The potential application of these methods for teaching and assessing (1) critical first aid and (2) self-rescue and escape skills to underground coal miners in annual refresher training is explored. Research and development activities that may improve mine health and safety training are suggested. Most of these research and development activities were completed later in the project. This additional work is reported in the project technical report #2 and the final report. The research reported in the present document was completed in 1984 -85. Many of the initial findings reported in this document are updated in the later project final report.

Operational readiness is a commonly used term in mining and many other industry settings. However, translating this term into a coherent scope of work that is practical and meaningful is a challenge faced by many mining projects. This inhibits the allocation of resources to the work and its completion. The problem is with understanding how the terminology applies to establishing a mining operation. Resolving this problem requires clarity around what operational readiness means for a mining project’s transition to operations and who owns the tasks of completing operational readiness. The motivation for resolution of this problem is in appreciating the consequences arising from any lack of clarity in definition of this task, the timing of the work, and ownership for its completion. In broad terms, these consequences amount to an erosion of value at a critical time for both the new mine and the company and shareholders. This situation often arises where operational readiness is not adequately addressed in project’s study phases. As a result, neither time, resources nor money are adequately provided to complete the work required. In other cases, operational readiness is sometimes assimilated with the delivery of the project’s physical assets by the project’s construction team, rather than aligned with the establishment of the operating team to deliver the desired operational outputs. This paper argues that operational readiness starts in a project’s study phases and flows through into the start of operations. The definition of operational readiness is discussed as a task, and a model for its planning and completion is presented. This discussion includes assigning ownership for operational readiness planning and delivery to the General Manager of a new operation and the operations leadership team, who are central to the success of this work. After all, the reputations of this leadership team depend on the performance of the operation in its first few years. The author’s work over the last 20 years, leading operational readiness programs and the preparation of feasibility studies for mining projects, has provided the insights and evolution of ideas that are central to this paper. Operational readiness is fundamentally directed at ensuring a new mining operation gets away to a successful start and builds a solid foundation for the future of the mine/operation/province. It requires clarity of purpose, ownership and coordination by people in the operating team, and their preparation of the requisite process definition and establishment of the significant relationships required for operations. Without its successful completion, it is unlikely the new operation will meet and sustain its start-up targets. This paper discusses a practical approach to operational readiness for mining projects.

An advanced water-in-oil emulsion hydraulic fluid has been developed which meets defined laboratory performance criteria and which has given fully satisfactory results in a one-year underground mine test in two continuous miners. A novel method of monitoring fluid water content was demonstrated and incorporated into a test kit for use at or near the mine site. Test fluid fire resistance integrity as measured by the MSHA Schedule 30 procedure was maintained during the test and important fire resistance test variables identified.

RESEARCH has been defined as the link between the present and the future. Science, wonderful though its achievements may be, has but scratched the surface of the unknown. Research is directing its attention to winning new facts in order that their application to the processes of today may open up new sources of wealth for the common benefit. Two classes of research investigations are often recognized-fundamental and applied, but these classes merge into each other and it is often hard to distinguish one from the other. Fundamental research is carried out primarily to develop basic facts, but frequently these are found to have immediate economic value, while applied research, specifically aimed at economic values, often necessitates a preliminary fundamental investigation. Both are essential and both should proceed by scientific method. It is obvious in fuel technology that a knowledge of the physical and chemical constitution of the various coals is fundamental to their industrial utilization, and further, a knowledge of the way these coals react under different conditions of temperature, atmosphere, etc., is necessary in solving such problems as storage, combustion, carbonization, gasification, or con-version to liquid fuels. The wide range of coals, the complexity, of their constitution, and the many uses for coal, makes fuel research no simple subject but one with unending possibilities. The Research Council of Alberta, formerly known as the Scientific and Industrial Research Council of Alberta, was established in 1919, to promote the development and conservation of the natural resources of the Province. The work of the Council was arranged in six major divisions: Fuels; Geology; Road Materials; Soils; Natural Gas; and Forest Products. The office and laboratories are located in the University of Alberta. The Council was financed until the depression of 1933 by a separate vote of the Legislature, but since then has been continued, though on a much smaller scale, as one of the activities of the University. It might, however, be noted that although the Council is now in abeyance, a skeleton organization has been maintained so that it can be brought back to active service as soon as conditions warrant. Annual reports are still submitted to the Legislature. Funds have not been made available, however, for the publication of the last five reports.

This report presents a discussion of perforance parameters for electronic or active hearing protectors that will meet the needs of underground coal miners. This information is incorporated into a proposed set of specifications that can be used to judge the suitability of a particular electronic hearing protector for the coal mine application. Acoustic and electrical tests were performed on a developmental model of an electronic hearing protector built by the U. S. Bureau of Mines. This model showed only a slight reduction in speech intelligibility which was traced to poorly matched components and in particular to the transducers. Tests of alternative components showed the Knowles BL-1671 microphone to be suitable for this application because of its performance and extremely small size. The Roan-well H-143/AIC earphone was found to have a good frequency response but has the disadvantage of being rather bulky which causes a slight degradation of a low frequency attenuation of the hearing protector. A satisfactory installation of these components in a hearing protector muff was demonstrated and tested. Results of tests of several methods of controlling the sound level under the hearing protector muff showed that a simple diode clipper circuit can be used with only a negligible loss in speech intelligibility for normal-hearing listeners. A commercially available active hearing protector, the British-built ACOS A-9000/2 was examined. This hearing protector provides sound level limiting through a saturating amplifier. Preliminary tests have shown that the performance characteristics of this commercial unit meet many of the proposed specifications so further testing and evaluation should be performed to determine its suitability for use 1n underground coal mines. The recommended test of intelligibility for electronic hearing protectors and other communication systems as used in a coal mine setting is the Modified Rhyme Test (MRT) developed by House et al. in 1965. The suitability and method of administering this test are discussed.

Revolutionary changes in the organization of work have far outpaced our knowledge about the implications of these changes for the quality of working life and for safety and health on the job. This gap in knowledge is one of the 21 priority areas for research under the National Occupational Research Agenda (NORA)—a framework crafted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and its partners to guide research into the next decade. This report was developed under NORA as the first attempt to develop a comprehensive research agenda for investigating and reducing occupational safety and health risks associated with the changing organization of work. Research and development needs identified in the agenda include (1) improved surveillance mechanisms to better track how the organization of work is changing, (2) accelerated research on safety and health implications of the changing organization of work, (3) increased research focus on organizational interventions to protect safety and health, and (4) steps to formalize and nurture organization of work as a distinctive field in occupational safety and health.
