"As the bulk handling sector continues its transformation to Industry 4.0, the mining industry, and its harsh working and environmental conditions, provides a perfect spot to study the feasibility of remote analysis and maintenance of the components used for bulk handling. The most important and expensive tools have been adapted to the digital era in recent years, from remotely controlled haul trucks to monitored conveyor belts.However, the big items of the installations rely on smaller parts that have been leftaside, mainly due to the difficultyof adapting them to the Internet ofThings (IoT).The paradigmatic example is the lack of monitored rollers, while all the other components of the conveyorbelt installations (the belt itself, motors, drums, etc.) were monitored some time ago. The main problem is that a failure of a single roller can cause the stoppage of the entire conveyor, due to possible damage to the belt. Thus, the implementation of an integral monitoring system of all the components of the conveyor is a must.The research and development department of ULMA Conveyor Components has been working since early 2012 on the development of monitored rollers, testing all the problems until their final installation in different demanding conditions, from the extreme heat in Australia to the freezing cold of Norway. All the tests have been done under actual working conditions, in real installations and have provided valuable knowledge in the identification of problems, their solutions and the final advantages of a roller monitoring system.Background and current stateThe malfunction of a single roller in certain conveyor belts can force the standstill of the entire installation until its replacement, due to the risk of greater and more expensive failures, such as a rip in the belt. In the case of a bulk handling installation, where a continuous supply of material is necessary, an unexpected stop of one hour could result in huge economic losses."

The project investigated regional impacts of mining on the ground water system of the Powder River Basin by: 1) establishment of a regional ground water monitoring network, and 2)development of , set of digital computer models to simulate ground water flow and quality, ground water contributions to surface water flow and quality (i.e., baseflow), and watershed run-off and recharge. Over 100 wells were monitored for physical and chemical parameters. Data were used as input to the model; and for the development of a comprehensive data base. The basin was modeled on a regional and subregional scale using a finite -difference model employing an alternating difference technique. Two water-shed models were evaluated for their ability to provide runoff and recharge inputs to the basic ground water model. Application of the regional and subregional models using conservative mining scenarios showed that drawdowns may extend west from the mines as far as ten miles but that impacts would be insignificant on a regional scale. The watershed model could be effectively applied to small watersheds only.

In 1987, the Bureau of Mines initiated a mineral assessment of the 5.7 million-acre Valdez Creek Mining District (VCMD). Following a literature search and interviews with persons knowledgeable about deposits within the district, limited on-site field visits were made to various deposits. Present within the district are the industrial minerals limestone, argillite, granite, basalt, perlite, zeolite, and sand and gravel. At least six limestone deposits of potentially economic size and grade are known to exist within the district. Adjacent to the Parks Highway and marginal to the district, a limestone deposit is currently being mined as a source of agricultural lime. A perlite occurrence near Yacko Creek was evaluated but proved not to be of industrial grade. The sand-and-gravel resources of the district are vast, but high silt content renders many of the glacial deposits unsuitable for use in construction applications.

Early computerised blast monitoring equipment consisted of a digital version of the existing analogue machines with, perhaps, a few enhancements. Many additional facilities have since been developed to enable the efficient collection of high quality data. These developments are examined with reference to digital sampling, triggering systems, the storage of complete recordings and signal processing. Recent advances have been made in the use of blast monitoring systems that comprise multiple blast monitoring locations with centralised control and data collection. Software has been developed to help record blast parameters and assess environmental effects. Computer databases have many advantages over their paper counterparts. Data can be easily retrieved and processed. The scaled distances used in the prediction and control of peak particle velocities can be calculated rapidly when the data are obtained directly from a database. Since the whole vibration signal can now be recorded, signal processing can be used to provide information such as signal length, dominant frequency and response spectra.

Q: It is May 1961 at Bill Wrather's Washington house. Bill, think back to your first job after college. Wrather: Perhaps I ought to go back a little bit further than my first job. I entered the University of Chicago with the idea of studying law. My intention was to take a 4-yr liberal arts course and superimpose a law degree on that. But during my undergraduate work I fell under the influence of R. D. Salsbury. He decided I had some talent as a geologist and influenced me to take a geological course. Nevertheless, I did not give up the idea of law. While in school I took a spell of typhoid fever and almost died. The doctor recommended outdoor exercise, so a geological job seemed logical. W. H. Emmons was a graduate student in the University and he interceded with Dr. Hayes of the USGS. I went on the payroll as assistant packer at $60 a month. I had one of the most glorious summers I ever spent in my life. That fall and the following year I took law courses and became thoroughly convinced that I was cut out for a geologist rather than a lawyer. I finished up my law work in 1908 while waiting for a job with Bill Emmons, who was doing a careful study of Goldfield and Tonopah.

The microstructure of explosion-bonded pairs of similar and dissimilar metals has been investigated by electron microscopy. A review of the specific problems encountered and the methods used for obtaining surface replicas and thin-film transmission specimens of the bond interface is given. The bond area is mainly characterized by continuous and practically diffusionless metallurgical bonding. The very large shear stresses induced along the collision front of the plates being joined causes extreme grain elongation and a symmetrical pattern of subgrains in the bonding direction. The bond zone is also characterized by a very high density of dislocations and pressure-induced twins. Localized heating occurring during the cladding process can result in partial re-crystallization or the formation of thin layers of molten material. The force of precisely controlled explosions causing a high-velocity impact between metal plates has been used for several years to achieve metallurgical bonding between an extremely wide variety of metals. This method essentially consists of accelerating a plate to high velocity toward a stationary plate by a detonating explosive. Since the restrictions to bonding are not those encountered with conventional nethods, it becomes possible to bond pairs of metals having widely different mechanical properties that are immiscible or form brittle intermetallic compounds. Many applications of such composite metals are found in the field of corrosion protection as well as numerous other fields; for example, explosion bonding is being applied for fabricating the materials used by the United States Mint in the new sandwich-type coins. The primary condition for establishing a metallurgical bond is that absolutely clean metal surfaces be brought together. Any metal exposed to the atmosphere is covered with oxides, adsorbed gases, and other contaminants; even a very forceful impact of two such surfaces is not sufficient for bonding. Cowan and Holtz-man,"' who reviewed the dynamics of colliding plates in detail, showed that in order to achieve a good bond the explosion conditions must be chosen in such a way that the plate collision velocity is less than the sonic velocity, in which case no oblique shock waves are attached to the collision front. A pressure wave is then generated ahead of the collision line, and the material forming the colliding surface of each of the plates flows forward and is ejected in the form of a spray, the so-called jet. The dynamic elastic limit of the metals must be exceeded so that there is sufficient plastic deformation. At the point where the jet formed by the junction of the inner surface layers of both plates separates from the combined plates, the material experi- ences a very high shearing strain and the pressure can reach several hundred kilobars. This process strongly influences the microstructure of the bond zone as will be seen later. Behind the collision front, uncontami-nated layers of internal material are brought together under high pressure and are thus metallurgically bonded. I) STRUCTURE OF EXPLOSION BONDS The different types of explosion bonds that can be obtained depend on the explosion conditions, and have been investigated by Cowan and Holtzman,1'2 Holtzman,3 Klein; Bahrani and crossland,' and Buck and Horn-bogen. The preferred kind for practical applications is the so-called wavy bond, typical examples of which are given in Fig. 1 showing light micrographs of various metal-to-metal interfaces. In forming this type-- of bond the collision energy is mainly expended in jetting, the formation of waves, and localized melting. Beyond the crest of the waves, eddy-shaped areas are observed in which the two metals are mixed in a complex pattern of streaks. Cowan and Holtzmanl first proposed that this wavy pattern is analogous to periodic eddy shedding in the flow of a viscous fluid around an obstacle (Von Karman's eddy street). The mass of metal ahead of the stagnation point, which is associated with the jet and has forward momentum, plays the role of an obstacle and the eddies created in the flow of solid metal around the stagnation point are preserved in the final clad specimen. This idea has been reviewed more recently by Klein4 and the variables involved in the wave formation have been discussed in some detail by Bahrani and crosslands and Buck and Hornbogen.6 Several studies of the structure of explosion bonds by light metallography have already been published.1-6 Aside from the waviness and the eddies which were mentioned above, the most striking characteristic of the area in the vicinity of the bond interface is a very considerable longitudinal grain deformation which appears to be strongest at the metal-to-metal boundary and dies out as one moves away from it. Large twins are often observed within the deformed grains, and molten areas are found in the center of the eddy-shaped structures situated beyond the crest of the waves. The large hydrostatic pressures and shear stresses occurring at the interface modify the mechanical and chemical properties of the bond zone. Increases in hardness in this area have been reported by various authors.396 The defects along the interface can also cause a local increase of the chemical reactivity and thus might be expected to boost the etching rate. However, the effects of this preferential etching cannot be observed by light microscopy due to its inherently limited resolution power. The same limitation precludes the observation of morphological features directly along the bond interface as well as the interface itself. Furthermore, no information can be gained by light-

Mineral processing engineers have recorded an- other year of active research and development work. Most gratifying was the broadly based attendance at the Mineral Processing Fundamental (formerly Basic Science) Committee sessions at the 1968 Annual Meeting of the AIME. Because of the availability of good papers, the active discussion and the growing attendance, sessions have grown from one to three at the annual meeting. Prof. M. C. Fuerstenau of the University of Utah will chair the Mineral Processing Fundamentals Committee for the next two years and we may thus be assured of continued active leadership. The name change from "Basic Science Committee" to the more descriptive "Mineral Processing Fundamentals Committee" approved by the MBD executive council is a welcome improvement. Our profession continues to attract the interest and cooperation of those in other professional groups. The 1968 Engineering Foundation Particulate Matter Conference, under the chairmanship of John Karpinski of Bethlehem Steel, was devoted exclusively to comminution this year. It attracted conferees from five continents and served as a particularly stimulating source of interchange of knowledge from many technical fields. Next year's conference will be under the chairmanship of Professor L,. G. Austin of The Pennsylvania State University. This conference plus the Symposium on Wettability and Flotation to be held at the annual American Chemical Society meeting in Minneapolis in April indicates the success achieved in the inter-disciplinary approach to problems. Other evidence of this spirit of professional cooperation is the forth- coming book on Size Reduction edited by D. W. Fuerstenau. This is the outgrowth of an AIChE symposium on size reduction held in 1965.

INTRODUCTION An efficient refuse-disposal system is a necessary part of the modem cleaning plant. The large-scale refuse system and disposal area, engineered for the lifetime of the plant, has become more important due to the greater tonnages of refuse produced from increased quantities of mechanically mined and prepared coal. Laws and increased government regulations have affected the design and operation of disposal systems. THE EFFECT OF MINE AND PLANT OPERATION Refuse disposal starts at the mining face. The mining system, the type of roof support, the machinery used, and the degree of discipline at the face contribute to the amount and type of refuse that must be removed through the disposal system. Economies gained through modification of the mining system or mining machinery may be partially offset by increased dilution of the mined coal with impurities from associated rock formations. In some cases the change in the mining system and equipment has reduced the dilution. Amongst those whose task it is to design tumbling mills and other comminution machines there is an almost religious divide between devotees of the Bond method and devotees of other methods developed in more recent times. For a decade or so the issue was between the Bond power-based methods and the JKMRC (JK) simulation based approach. The newest method to challenge the status quo is power-based and was developed by Steve Morrell. As the title suggests, this paper will take some liberty at concluding that Fred Bond and Steve Morrell may be separated by history, but not by their approaches to their individual contributions to the science of comminution. Another driver for the paper is that although it is good to have diversity of thought, the existing divisions are problematic for those of us signing public disclosure documents. If alternative design methods produce materially different outcomes for the mill duty, then at least one of them is wrong or being used incorrectly. At some point the unsustainable argument may need to be put in a court of law that we metallurgists have two or more materially different design methods, each of which is correct! Therefore, perhaps a resolution is needed before this occurs?The works of both Fred Bond and Steve Morrell are each directly related to their contemporary grinding mill design and operational environments. Both their approaches are empirical, borne of observing and measuring real world situations. Both worked with theories that preceded them, gathered their own data and then each saw shortfalls in the status quo.Fred Bond was an escapee from revolution, a victim of The Great Depression, and had several near death experiences during his early site-based career. Perhaps he was fortuitously rescued from himself when asked by Allis Chalmers (A-C) to set up its rock testing laboratory in Milwaukie in 1930. Fred’s testing led him to conclude that neither the Kick nor the Von Rittinger theories explained his measurements. His writings on the failings of these old theories caused a divide between devotees of the old and new methods at that time. After many years, and much thought and plotting of data (the old way!), he came up with his now-famous equations (and his Third Theory) which have stood the test of time, certainly in the world of Bond-era machines.Coming from England via several African diamond mines, Steve Morrell immersed himself into the comminution world of the JK in Brisbane about a decade after Fred passed on. The JK had developed its semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) simulation framework using its own pendulum breakage tester, itself a derivative of the twin pendulum impact device invented by Bond decades earlier. At the JK Steve developed his authoritative Tumbling Mill Power equations and was involved in real world analysis of comminution problems on the global stage. Steve’s JK experience coincided with the demise of the rod mill, the rise of autogenous grinding (AG) and SAG milling and a rapid expansion in concentrator capacity.Morrell left the JK to pursue his own interests, which included ongoing consulting work, now demanded by the comminution world. He then turned to investigating a growing list of discrepancies between the opinions of designers and theoreticians, and the factual outcomes. The Morrell Method of design arose from this re-examination of ore testing, real world operating data and these glaring and expensive discrepancies between design and outcome. Y our program committee must have recognized my limitations when issuing the invitation to speak to you, because they very thoughtfully left the subject wide open.With the leeway thus granted, I hope that you will bear with me for a few minutes while I try to clarify the impressions of the mining industry that I have gained in the very short time I have held the Mines portfolio and some of the parts that government bas or should have in furthering its development.As I see it, it is the duty of the Mines Department, as an arm of the provincial government, to balance the proprietary rights of all the people against the interests to whom the privilege of developing our resources are, in a s e n s e, leased. To strike a fair balance is not always easy, nor is it possible always to satisfy both sides. Still, under the free enterprise democratie form of government to which I think we al! subscribe, no better way of handling the problem has yet been discovered."

"The Program Committee, chairmanned by John Peperakis, has done an excellent job in securing this very splendid talent for our convention. "I would like to say a word as to the, condition of the coal industry in our part of the country as well as elsewhere. I believe we can look at it with more optimism than in the past several years, particularly in the state of Colorado, with which I am more familiar. "Annual coal production in Colorado gradually dropped from around 12 million tons during the years of World War I to as low as 8 million tons during the last war, and to less than 3 million tons in the year of 1954. We believe that it touched bottom that year, as in 1955 the state production went up again to nearly 3,400,000 tons, equivalent to an increase of 15%. As you know, the national increase in bituminous coal production for the year of 1955 was roughly 2000 over 1954. "The national increase for the first two months of 1956 over the same period of 1955 is approximately 2100. Colorado's production is running around 1000 over the comparable period of last year, and the 5 states represented by our Institute came up with a nice increase in 1955 over 1954 of 1000. "Figures on the increase so, far in 1956 for this group of states are not readily available, but I fully believe that. our industry locally, as well as nationally, is now starting out on a steady rise despite the fanfare of nuclear energy and its more glamorous competitor, solar energy. Many authorities tell us that real competition from these sources is a long way off and that the atomic energy program will consume far more coal than is displaced by nuclear power. "I do not mean to infer that we coal people are out of the woods by a long way' so far as holding and regaining markets, for our coal. On the night of June 8, 1917, the flame of a carbide lamp accidentally set fire to the uncovered and frayed insulation of an armored power cable near the 2,400-foot level of the North Butte Mining Co.'s Granite Mountain shaft. How this insulation accidentally became exposed is explained on page 15. The highly flammable oiled fabric set fire to the shaft timbers, and as this is a downcast shaft the fire spread with great rapidity, soon filling the mine workings with smoke and gas. At the time 410 men were working underground, 247 of whom escaped by various means, but most of the 163 remaining were probably overcome soon after the lire started, and perished. Only two men were actually burned. The cause of the disaster was purely accidental. The immediate effect was the unexpected reversal of normal conditions; the ultimate effect was great loss of life and the destruction of the main hoisting shaft, putting it temporarily out of service. The work of rescue and fire fighting continued eight days. The following pages present an attempt to draw some practical conclusions and suggestions from this disaster. The property of the North Butte Mining Co. consists of about 220 acres in the northeastern part of the Butte district, Montana. Next to the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. it is the largest pro¬ducer of the district. In 1916, the year before the disaster, there were 1,160 men employed. The output was 560,947 tons of ore, which yielded 24,498,181 pounds of copper, 1,047,063 ounces of silver, 1,712 ounces of gold, and 412,953 pounds of zinc. The profit was $2,479,595. The total development work for that year was 21,694 feet. During the first half of 1917, the year of the accident, the daily tonnage of ore averaged 2,000, an increase of 400 tons over that of the year 1916.

In the context of emergency situations within underground tunnels, the potential to utilize sensory technology for navigation assistance holds the promise of saving human lives. Our research introduces a device configuration designed to enhance the performance of search and rescue teams. This setup integrates LIDAR and thermal cameras with the Microsoft Hololens, facilitated by the NUC computer and ROS Bridge. Performance assessment involves quantifying the extent to which a user is willing to venture into a light-deprived section of the mine prior to necessitating supplementary illumination. The preliminary outcomes highlight the significant potential of augmented reality assistance in offering indispensable aid to first responders, thereby greatly augmenting the efficiency of search and rescue missions conducted during critical circumstances.

Before the World War the use of zirconium and its compounds was largely experimental and confined almost wholly to Germany and Austria . Occasionally small lots of zirconium ore had been produced in the United States ( 1,000 pounds in 1869 , 26 tons in 1883 , and 3,000 pounds in 1903 ) and used (with monazite ) in the manufacture of various lighting devices , especially incandescent gas mantles ; but it was not until 1906 that the discovery of the natural zirconium oxide in large quantities near Sao Paulo , Brazil , first gave promise that a zirconium industry eventually might be developed . Edward Rietz , who worked the Brazilian deposits , interested German chemists in extending the use of zirconium , and by 1911 trade journals were listing German firms as manufacturers of compounds or products derived therefrom . For a time zirconia was one of the various oxides used in the Nernst lamp . It was used also for crucibles and hearths as refractory material ; in the manufacture of chemical utensils ; in enamels ; in the place of bismuth subnitrate for defining Röntgenray pictures of the stomach ; as a pigment ; in medicine ; and in a number of other ways . The Germans were credited also with producing a remarkable zirconium steel , which , it was claimed , was much superior to other alloy steels . During the World War the United States Government investigated the possibilities of zirconium , as well as those of other steel -hardening elements , and a large automobile manufacturer actually purchased a substantial quantity of ore with the purpose of employing zirconium in automobile steels . Immediately after the armistice the Government ceased its investigations ; but despite the difficulties experienced by various investigators in reaching concordant results , interest in the use of zirconium as a steel -hardening agent , as well as in other uses of the element and its compounds , continued . In 1918 the Foote Mineral Co. , which had been interested in zirconium for several years , was exploiting the deposit in Brazil formerly worked by the Germans and was supplying zirconia in the form of ore , brick , and cement for refractory and other purposes . About the same time the Electro Metallurgical Co. , which before the entrance of the United States into the war was experimenting with zirconium alloys , supplied in tonnage quantities the demand for these alloys . In 1919 it was reported that American manufacturers , after several years of research, were producing in commercial quantities pure zirconium oxide , which was finding a place in the manufacture of small refractory articles , scorifying dishes , crucibles , tubes , and one- piece furnace linings . In 1920 the lowering of the price of zirconium metal powder ( because of improved metallurgical methods ) promised the production of the metal on a semicommercial scale . In 1924 the Titanium Alloy Manufacturing Co. introduced a new opacifying agent , " Opax , " made from zircon . A year or two later some of the large pottery manufacturers became interested in the use of zirconium oxide as an opacifying agent , the increased production of titanium pigments having resulted in the production of zirconium as a by-product at a price that could compete with tin oxide . In 1928 it was reported that the industrial use of zirconium oxide was increasing steadily in the manufacture of brick , crucibles , and other refractory products , such as high- temperature cements . The Arctic is a region of special economic, geopolitical, research, socio-ethnic, and defense interests of both Russia and other countries of the Arctic zone. Introduction of innovation technologies at ore-processing factories is a direct responsibility of the state and this problem should be solved on the basis of coordination of interests of different stakeholders. The task of elaboration of scientific principles of rational state regulation in the North is very topical. Innovations require considerable investments first of all from private capital. However as an investment object innovations are not attractive for investors as they require large expenditures for long-term projects, and they are connected to high risks because market incentives form striving to get quick profits of private companies and result in a certain behaviour strategy while innovations need ?long money?. Under such conditions without state regulation of investment and innovation activities development of the mining sector in the Arctic practically has no prospects. At innovation development of mining enterprises economic growth is provided at the expense of active state innovation activities. The elaborated strategy of ore-processing enterprises should correspond to the modern paradigm of the ore-processing industry development which is not only for extraction of minerals but also for multi-profile structure having comprehensive use of the resources on the rational basis intended for rational complex utilization of mineral resources of the AZR which by the definition includes maximally full use of the whole aggregate of resources on the economically rational basis with obligatory environmental with resource reproductive and socio-economic functions and deterrents. The main principle of creation of innovation technologies is to obtain more products of higher quality with minimal costs. This allows increasing ?productivity of the resources? several times. This principle makes increasing productivity of the resources the most important and in this case efficiency of use of the resources brings extra profits at the expense of lack of new costs such as payment for protection and utilization of wastes. According to the economic theory only ratio between demand and supply is able to fix optimal proportions in economy and to give necessary signals for investment activities of mining enterprises. In this context market for minerals and increase of mineral resources productivity do not create incentives for investment activities without which neither sustainable economic growth nor solution of macroeconomic tasks are possible. Nevertheless countries should not reject this idea in spite of economic efficiency of the enterprises. Extraction degree of useful components and especially oil in the Arctic zone is one of the lowest in the world. This can lead to crisis of oil industry and other mining sectors. The reason for that is lack of a state policy of realization of innovation technologies in the mining sector in the Arctic.

The present paper consists of a survey of the literature on the problems of abrasion and wear of metals and materials by suspended matter. This problem is a very general one in industry, and is especially notice-able in the operation of cyclones and other types of dust collectors. The problem of abrasive dust in corrosive gas environments, such as commonly encountered in metallurgical industries, is particularly severe. Very little work has been done in the study of this type of abrasive wear, especially at high temperatures. However, a general review is presented here of all the work published on related subjects, such as that involving sand erosion in turbines and water wheels and the effect of temperature on friction wear. Topics in this paper include: blasting wear by sand, quartz, limestone, silicon carbide and other refractory particles; methods of investigation; effects of velocity, temperature and *Canadian Armament Research and Development Establishment, Valcarter, P.Q. angle of attack; correlation between indentation hardness, scratch hard-ness and resistance to abrasion; the effect of protective coatings; resistance of various metals; etc.

"INTRODUCTION These inspection standards have been prepared for use as a guide for the Federal inspection of anthracite mines. They are a revision of ""Tentative Inspection Standards for Anthracite Mines,"" published as Bureau of Mines Information Circular 7231 in January 1943 and used as a guide for Federal inspections. Numerous changes in the original standards have been made, due in part to recognition of shortages of some types of safety equipment due to the war, in part to need of additional standards to cover certain mine conditions and practices, and in part to conditions not foreseen when the original standards were prepared.Throughout these standards reference is made to determining the methane content of the mine air by using a permissible flame safety lamp. The Bureau has approved various electrical devices for the detection of methane, but it is recognized that new devices for determining the percentage of combustible gases as well as the percentage of oxygen, might be perfected for general use in mines, and therefore it may be necessary to revise certain standards to include the use of such equipment if and when the device is accepted as being permissible.About one-fourth of these standards are marked with an asterisk (*) as being of particular importance in preventing accidents in many coal mines; however, failure to carry out the suggestions made in such of the other standards as are applicable may also lead to loss of life.With continuing change in mining methods, some of these standards may become inapplicable, and further revision will be advisable. Therefore, question regarding these standards and suggestions regarding new standards should be brought to the attention of the Bureau, so that changes may be made from time to time. Numerous changes proposed by mine operators and by State mining departments have been incorporated in these standards."

The strain and pressure gage methods for evaluating the relative performance of explosives in rock were compared. This comparison was based on a study of the responses of strain and pressure gages to explosion-generated seismic waves. Several explosives) representing a wide range of detonation pressures) were used. In general the relative performance of these explosives) as determined from amplitude) impulse parameter) and energy parameter measurements) is the same if the compressive portion of the strain pulse and the comparable portion of the pressure pulse are considered. Other similarities and differences of the two methods are also discussed.

Viburnum, located in the foothills of the Ozarks in south-east Missouri, is the site of a modern lead mining and milling operation. Two mines are currently producing a total of 5,000 tons per day and a third mine is in the final development stage, with full production scheduled for late this year (1964). These mines will supply the tonnage required to keep the Viburnum mill operating at a full capacity of 7,000 tons per day for many years. The efficient underground mining operation is completely trackless. Drill jumbos are used to break the ore in a room and pillar method of mining. Transloaders, or St. Joe shovels, and trucks do the loading and hauling. The Viburnum mill has a world-wide reputation as a most efficient operation. This is due to the extensive use of automatic process controls, and labour saving materials handling facilities. The Masbate gold deposits are situated on the island of Masbate, 350 km south of Manila. A new plant was commissioned in April 2009. The grinding circuit consists of one semi-autogenous (SAG) mill Ø9.75 m × 4.27 m, two ball mills Ø5.6 m × 7.1 m and a pebble crushing circuit, which is usually called a SAG-ball mill-crusher configuration. The SAG mill was originally equipped with radial pulp lifters. The mill runs at fixed speed of 10.9 rev/min, which is approximately 80 per cent of critical speed (per cent CS). Due to the high speed of the mill the original radial design pulp lifters presented a high volume of recirculating load inside the chamber and consequently heavy wear on the outer circle (bottom pan).In order to address the high wear on the pulp lifters a number of avenues were considered in early 2011. The chosen solution was to change the geometry of pulp lifters from radial to curved design. The pre-existing drilling pattern on the discharge end of the mill was a major constraint. A number of designs were considered. The selection of the most suitable option was to be made based on 3D discrete element modelling (DEM) and smoothed particle hydrodynamic (SPH) simulations.The original radial design and two potential solutions for curved pulp lifters were simulated with 3D DEM and SPH software. The main three objectives were predicting the charge dynamics, the expected wear patterns and discharge efficiency. One of the solutions was chosen and implemented during 2012.Observations carried on after installation of the curved pulp lifters have confirmed, as expected, a reduction in wear intensity on the outer pulp lifters. In addition to this, at early stages of operation with curved pulp lifters, the mill operator noticed a reduction in energy consumed by the mill with no detrimental effect on mill performance.This paper is intended to further study the effect of curved pulp lifters on mill energy consumption.CITATION:Ciutina, S and Soriano, R J, 2014.
