The use of QemSCAN in providing mineralogical input to detailed ore and product characterization has proved of immense value in recent years. In this paper, a brief review of selected Cu-case studies is presented to demonstrate the versatility of automated, quantitative mineralogy by QemSCAN. This versatility ranges from measurement and analysis strategies through to data processing and presentation. As a rapid diagnostic service, it is common to find that only grain size, the degrees of liberation and/or ore mineral modal mineralogy are of interest. By contrast, the detail afforded by the simultaneous determination of both gangue and ore minerals can alert mineral engineers to fatal flaws and attributes deleterious to processing that are directly a function of silicate and other gangue mineralogy. Examples of the latter effects include the influence of micaceous minerals and acid consuming species, while the former include fluorine minerals, which can provide both processing and environmental challenges.

The recognition that surface mining need not be viewed as a permanent dedication of the land but rather as a temporary non-renewable use in a series of land uses has caused greater emphasis on the re-use of surface-mined lands. In an effort to develop a procedure for evaluating postmining land use potentials, specific mines in various regions of the U.S. have been studied to determine the extent of current mined-land planning and to discover characteristics that are regional in nature. As part of this investigation, the Indian Head Mine, which is located in Mercer County, North Dakota, has been studied. The Indian Head Mine is presently operated by The North American Coal Corporation -Western Division and has been in operation since 1917 under various ownership. The status of current reclamation and postmining land use planning was reviewed. In addition, the relationship between mine planning and public planning in an area impacted by energy development was investigated. Finally, key factors affecting site potential realization for western surface mines have been identified.

The National Granite Commission at its annual meeting in Norfolk, Va., in January, 1930, passed a resolution requesting the Bureau of Mines to conduct an economic study of the granite industry. In compliance with this request a preliminary review has been made of trends, in, the production and uses of block granite. Some unfavorable conditions, were, thus brought to light and certain suggestions regarding a. more orderly and consistent growth in the industry are herein discussed. The results of the study axe, presented in this report for the earnest consideration of the industry and comments are invited, not only on this report but as to future work that might be accomplished by the Bureau of Mines. The authors desire to acknowledge many helpful suggestions and comments from Paul M. Tyler of the Bureau of twines and from Harris F. Sherman, secretary of the National Building Granite Quarries Association. Miss A. T. Coons of the Bureau of Mines rendered valuable, assistance through her wide knowledge of granite statistics.

Previous research by the U.S. Bureau of Mines has shown that autoclave cyanide leaching of used automobile exhaust catalysts for recovery of platinum-group metals (PGM) is technically feasible. The purpose of this work was to investigate the chemistry of the dissolution of PGM in cyanide solutions in more detail. Where possible, samples of pure, elemental PGM powders or foils were used instead of automobile exhaust catalysts, because of their greater purity. Ultraviolet spectra revealed that Pt and Pd were solubilized as the square planar tetracyanometallate (II) complexes, while Rh was solubilized as the octahedral hexacyanorhodate (III) complex. This explained the poor recovery of Rh from solution by carbon adsorption, solvent extraction, and ion exchange observed in earlier research, because of the higher anionic charge and size of the octahedral complex. Leaching rate studies showed that the rate of solubilization was greatest for Pd, followed by Pt and Rh. Although the rate of chemical reaction was the controlling step for the dissolution of elemental Pt and Rh samples, the rate of pore diffusion was rate limiting for PGM in catalyst samples.

Stirred milling technologies have firmly established themselves in concentrator circuits as energy-efficient alternatives to tumbling ball mills. High and continued increases in electricity costs, coupled with the ever-increasing power consumption by primary grinding circuits due to declining head grades of ore-bodies, provides a compelling case for these technologies. Additionally, the ability to successfully deploy stirred milling in coarse grinding applications extends the range of use in concentrators, thus increasing the opportunity matrix for energy optimization in a flowsheet. This paper therefore details methodologies and strategies that can be applied to evaluate the optimum stirred milling solution for different concentrator applications. These methods and strategies will focus specifically on the two major stirred mill machine types; namely, gravity-induced (VERTIMILL? grinding mill and Nippion-Eirich tower mill) and fluidized (SMD, Isamill?, Knelson-Deswik mill, etc. ). Finally, case studies from circuits across industry and laboratory tests will be used to illustrate the energy benefit from the use of stirred mills.

The St Lawrence Seaway, a deep-water canal system between Montreal and Lake Ontario, was opened for navigation on April 25, 1959. Prior to the opening of the new Seaway, small boats known as canalers and a few deep-sea carriers, primarily from Norway since World War II, were the only ships able to journey past Montreal into Lake Ontario through the old Canadian St. Lawrence canal system. Thus it was necessary for many tons of bulk and general cargo to be shipped all-rail to and from Atlantic ports or to be transhipped to and from canalers. With the opening of the new Seaway, large Great Lakes bulk carriers and a much larger percentage of the world's shipping fleet are now able to sail directly from the sea to the heart of industrial North America. In this paper, the historical events leading up to the construction of the Seaway and the physical nature of the Great Lakes transportation system are briefly reviewed. Following this, an attempt is made to evaluate the effects of the new Seaway on Canada's mineral industry. Because the Seaway has been in operation for only one season, this paper must be considered only an interim report. Because of the importance of the Seaway to iron ore, this commodity will be dealt with in detail, although the effect on other mineral commodities such as coal, petroleum, nonferrous ores, iron and steel will be mentioned. The national mine-safety demonstration at Pittsburgh, Pa., was projected and undertaken in the hope that it would aid the increase of safety in the mining industry. That the national mine-safety demonstration was warranted and has served a useful purpose was evidenced by the attendance, not only at the public demonstration in Forbes Field, but also at the more special exhibit of the work of the Bureau of Mines at the arsenal grounds and at the experimsntal. mine. Nearly 2,000 persons witnessed the demonstrations and exhibits of the Bureau of Mines at the arsenal grounds on the morning of October 30, 1911. The spectators were all mine operators, miners, or persons interested in mining, and represented operations in all parts of the United States. Nearly 1,200 of these persons visited the bureau's experimental mine at Bruceton to witness ~th~explosion of coal dust. Had the weather, which was exceptionally inclement, been more favorable, there would doubtless have been a much larger attendance. At the public demonstration in Forbes Field, which· was witnessed by President Taft, from 12,000 to 15,000 persons, chiefly mining men, were present and attested their interest and enthusiasm in the minesafety exhibits by remaining throughout the proceedings, regardless of the rain which fell all the morning .. Sincethis demonstration, the organization of first-aid corps and of rescue corps has been undertaken at mines where there had previously been no such organizations. The bureau has received letters of commendation attesting the value of the demonstration in drawing· attention to the dangers and to possible means of greater safety in mining. Many of these letters have urged that the results of the demonstration be published for the guidance and instruction of those who were present. In response to these reauests the following account of the mine- BlIIeLY demonstration lias been prepared. IIi its preparation various division and section chiefs of the Bureau of Mines have cooperated. The authors acknowledge the assistance they have received from those section chiefs and other members of the bureau who contributed detailed descriptions of apparatus exhibited at the demonstration or of investigations represented.

This paper, a follow-up to an earlier study, gives the history of Canadian developments in mineral processing from 1921 to the fall of 1964. It deals extensively with comminution and flotation, and then goes on to cover the fields of gravity concentration, magnetic concentration, cyanidation, the processing of uranium ores, and instrumentation. Several outstanding examples of installations are given. The paper concludes with a discussion of present-day trends in mineral processing. Introduction T HE history of the developments in mineral processing in Canada from its earliest times to 1920 has already been published by one of the authors (1). The present paper is thus a logical follow-up to bring this history to date. From 1834 to 1920, mineral processing in Canada, as elsewhere in the world, was in its formative stage. This, however, prepared the ground for developments that have resulted in a mining empire from the Atlantic to the Pacific, a mining empire which could be said to be almost on par with that in the United States.

"INTRODUCTION Much of the recent progress in increasing the efficiency of oil-well performance can be attributed to advancements in the art of cleaning wells. Through research and development by operators and service companies during the past decade, significant improvements in the application of engineering and chemical principles to well-cleaning technology have widened greatly the scope of ""clean-out"" methods to the end that greater ultimate recovery of oil will be attained.This report reviews recent improvements and developments on this important problem in California; it describes also the use of various methods and tools for cleaning wells to stimulate or revive their productivity. Developments in preventing and removing mud sheaths in well-completion operations also are described. The report is based on a field survey, supplemented by data from the technical and patent literature and from manufacturers' catalogs, which contain much valuable information.In preparing the material for publication as a Bureau of Mines report, the author has been fully aware of certain limiting conditions that attend the discussion of a subject such as that treated in this report. The following are examples:1. To a considerable extent, well cleaning in California is done with tools rented from service companies, and their representatives and employees are specialists in jobs of this type. They usually have working experience with their own equipment and methods which greatly exceeds that of persons whose interest has been casual or who have had no opportunity to study the subject in detail in actual practice. Many of the tools and methods are covered by letters patent for the protection that may be in developing and successfully applying these mechanical and chemical means of increasing the production of wells. Frequently several years have been required to perfect a given tool or technique, requiring relatively large investments to establish a service that is remunerative to those who have primary interest in a certain development and at the same time attractive enough to the operators of producing properties (because of greater quantities of oil delivered into the flow tanks) to warrant employment of or contractual agreements with a particular service group."

Methods for treating and processing refractory gold ores are well established. However, what is less well understood is how the formation of the gold-bearing deposits affects gold processing and extraction. In order to evaluate the effect of ore genesis on gold extraction a number of South African gold deposits were studied. These included complex Pilgrim’s Rest samples as well as refractory Fairview, Barbrook, and Consolidated Murchison samples. We found the refractory nature of gold ores is controlled by a limited number of well-understood mineralogical factors. Solid solution gold is linked to low temperature and pressure conditions in fine-grained sedimentary lithologies, while reactive pyrrhotite can form from hydrothermal fluids associated with mafic magmatic rocks. These formational controls can be used to identify and avoid complex deposits at a desktop study phase, or address and reduce complications further along the pipeline using early mineralogical studies.

It’s expected that the world economy will face a stable and continuous growth in the demand of iron ore, reaching more than two billion tonnes per year within the next year. After decades exploiting resources with high content of iron ore, now the industry faces the challenge to exploit and beneficiate more complex ores.According to the industrial practice, the flotation technology is one of the most important and effective beneficiation processes to deal with low-grade iron ores around the world. However, even with this, it is still necessary to search for new processing routes or promote the optimisation of the existing circuits.The broad application of this technology is an outcome that deeply relies on the proper selection of flotation chemicals specifi cally designed for each system. New collectors are in continuous development as flotation performance significantly relies upon their optimisation.The reverse iron ore flotation in Brazil, mainly constituted by haematite and quartz, uses ether amines as collector for silica minerals and caustic corn starch as depressor for haematite. The process selectivity is highly impacted by the features of the etheramine, such as:• mono or di-etheramine,• neutralisation degree,• chain length,• branched or linear chain,• the flotation pH, and• the size distribution of the flotation feed.This paper describes the experience obtained from laboratory and industrial trials on different ores, conducted to improve the selectivity and recovery in the reverse iron ore flotation by selecting the required collector for low-grade ores.

People are our most valuable resource. It is as true today as any point in mining history as we face unprecedented personnel shortages aggravated by a workforce that is aging, significant generational gaps and difficulties recruiting younger professionals all amidst increasing global mineral demand. The educational system has a similar, but slightly contrary problem. Many historically strong mining engineering programs have died. Now, fewer mining oriented universities are trying to produce more students in order to meet the demand. Moreover, their situation is aggravated by a similarly aging workforce, a general lack of mid-career PhD?s with the interest and field experience to teach effectively, an extremely slow hiring and funding process, and an inability to be competitive against private industry compensation packages. The traditional instructional model, while not necessarily broken, is most certainly dated, and can penalize programs and students where schools do not have in-house expertise in a given topic. Mining companies, like Rio Tinto, have the opportunity, if not necessarily the obligation, to positively influence how this model works. Educational Partnerships may be the key. This paper will address some observations, and possibilities, associated with Rio Tinto?s efforts in this area.

FROM prehistoric times to our own day man has struggled against extremes of climate. Human life, originating in semi-tropical or temperate areas, was unable to progress into the northern latitudes until fire was discovered and some form of clothing provided. It was found possible to maintain life even in the hottest parts of the tropics, but only at a great sacrifice of comfort and efficiency compared with the more temperate zones, or in cooler areas with the protection of clothing and artificial heat. It was no accident, but the natural result of climatic conditions, that efficiency became the greatest and civilization the most advanced in areas where the natural climate was favorable, or in cooler zones where protection against severe cold could be se-cured by relatively simple methods of conserving or producing heat.

The diffusion of such knowledge in the field of sampling metallic metallurgical materials appears to have been quite insufficient, and it is felt that when the principles involved are once thoroughly comprehended their universal application will be appreciated, so that it will make no difference whether pig iron or gold bullion is offered for test. It may further be noted that a discussion of the theories underlying practical methods is placed under the caption "Practical Sampling," with the idea that no one can be a practical sampler unless he is capable of analyzing his methods. No attempt has been made to advocate any one method, but it is hoped that the analyses of all of the methods in use will show where each may be correctly and safely applied. The fact that it is possible to demonstrate the theoretical correctness of several methods indicates the invalidity of the claim that any single one of them is the standard.

Introduction The great importance of air warfare during World War II and the introduction of large-scale air transportation and airborne operations created an immediate demand for large quantities of high quality light alloy products. Before this war, the use of magnesium, the lightest structural metal, was barely in the development stage, and considerable research work was needed to overcome difficulties in improving its properties and to attain uniform quality in mass production of magnesium alloy products. The Canadian Bureau of Mines was frequently called upon, by various agencies of the Armed Forces and of the newly established war industries, to examine magnesium alloys that had failed in fabrication or in actual service, and to advise on proper alloys and fabrication methods to be used. Failures in magnesium alloy castings were connected mainly with lack of knowledge of proper founding and surface-protecting techniques. Most of the defects were due to microporosity and faulty heat treatment. To aid the foundry industry, small-scale investigations were started on the effect of various factors in the casting technique in order to improve the quality of the products. These investigations were made in co-operation with representatives of the Armed Forces and the Canadian magnesium industry. This work was later co-ordinated into a broad research programme on magnesium alloys, comprising problems on melting, refining, various casting methods, heat treatment, and testing of properties of standard and special alloys. This research programme? is still in force, and the present paper contains some results of the first series of investigations on magnesium casting alloys carried out at the Experimental Foundry of the Bureau of Mines.

In this review, availability of germanium in primary and secondary resources and its recovery from these resources are presented. With nearly 40% germanium consumed in fiber optics and scarcity of resources, the global consumption outplays the primary production. Germanium exists as a substituted element in zinc sulfide matrix of lead–zinc sulfides and lignites. Nearly 60% of the germanium supply is met by zinc refining residues, and about 20–30% of germanium is produced from coal and its by-products. Germanium recovery from various resources such as zinc plant residues, coal and coal plant waste, spent optical fibers, and copper flue dust has been examined. Bioleaching was exploited by few researchers to extract germanium from zinc sulfides, sulfide tailings, jarosite, coal fly ash, and flue dust. This review covers the various work carried out by different chemical separation processes, viz., chemical precipitation, solvent extraction (SX), ion exchange (IX), and membrane processes, as well as biological approaches.

This report describes the design and implementation of UHF radio and closed-circuit television systems in the Black River room and pillar limestone mine near Butler, Pendleton County, Kentucky. Prior to designing the radio system, measurements of signal attenuation on 812 and 466 mHz were made in the slope tunnel and in the straight and level crosscuts in the mine. Two distributed antenna systems fed by two sets of base stations provide approximately 75o coverage of the mine. Passive reflectors are used for extending signals into intersecting crosscuts and two-way signal boosters will be used to extend signals to the perimeter and obstructed areas of the mine. Fourteen mine vehicles were equipped with mobile radios equipped with digital identification, alarm and status encoders. Fifteen portable transceivers also were used. Six closed-circuit television cameras provide surveillance of critical transfer points of the belt conveyor system, and the loading dock at the base of the slope and an ash disposal area in the mine. Two-way radio communication and closed-circuit television have saved considerable man. hours, increased production, reduced maintenance costs and enhanced safety. Innovative developments were the use of passive reflectors and two-way signal boosters for extending signals into intersecting crosscuts, development of lightweight signal margin measuring equipment, modifications of mobile digital encoders to automatically send status information from mine vehicles such as numbers of loads of ore delivered, hot engine, etc., and the use of CATV technology for multiplexing audio, digital and video signals onto coaxial cables from the surface to the mine.

Metso has a long history supplying boilers for high ash coal firing. These boilers are based on circulating fluidized bed (CFB) technology. CFB?s biggest benefit is fuel flexibility ? it can burn fuels from high moisture content to high ash content. Metso has delivered tens of CFB boilers burning waste or high ash coal starting on 80?s. Some of the boilers have been in operation twenty years meaning that there is a long term experience from these plants available. This feedback includes boiler performance and maintenance issues of the boiler. Metso is also delivering coal washing plants to improve coal quality, i.e. reducing ash content of the coal. The idea to combine coal washing plant and CFB boiler was made up two years ago in Metso. Up-coming legislation of coal washing and restrictions for washery reject land-filling in India are good drivers for this kind of concept. Pre-study of this kind of concept led to the conclusion that coal washing process can be fine-tuned so that reject?s calorific value is only 1100 kcal/kg and that was set as a target for boiler design. Metso shipped 200 tons of washery reject to its own research center located in Tampere Finland. First a wide range of fuel characterization tests were done in lab-scale and after that one week test run in 4 MW CFB pilot boiler was done. Test run proved that 1100 kcal/kg can be fired without any support fuel with special boiler design. Test run results gave a good set of data regarding combustion efficiency, emission performance and boiler dynamic behaviour when burning this kind of fuel. These results are introduced in this paper. This paper introduces also the CFB boiler concept for washery reject firing including boiler plant, fuel and ash handling systems and flue gas cleaning system. It is an update of a paper of the same title which was presented by Sass and Mansanti at the AMC conference in San Francisco in 1987. New practices, new equipment and variations of older practices that have been introduced in the last five years are discussed in each of the following categories: process selection trends, comminution, gravity concentration, flotation, oxidation, agitated and vat leaching, heap leaching, solution concentration and purification, zinc precipitation, electrowinning, tailings disposal detoxification, and reclamation.

"This paper explores the complex interrelationship between the resource cycle, recycling and metal production as a function of economics, environmental legislation, and product design. It is argued that central to optimising this resource cycle lies the control in particular of physical separation plants by the application of advanced sensor technology and sorting equipment, as well as suitable control and sampling algorithms supported by optimising mass balance models.Metals are produced through a long chain of processes. For primary resources, metals production goes through mining, mineral processing, ore smelting, conversion and refining steps or via low temperature hydrometallurgical processes, or a combination of both pyro- and hydrometallurgical operations. For the recycling of resources, metals are separated and recovered from metal scrap, which plays an increasingly important role in the world. Metals after being produced, either from primary or recycling resources, have to be further refined or manufactured into various types of alloys and finally shaped into different products for the end-users. Since the end-user discards products the contained materials find their way back into the resource cycle as scrap. Therefore, controlling the metallurgical reactors also controls, in a much broader sense, the material quality in the complete metals cycle, from the production phase, to the end-use phase, up to the recycling phase (Reuter et al., 2003). The recycling phase includes separation of materials into saleable intermediate products, which are reintroduced into the production phase as a recycling resource. Therefore, the metallurgical processes in each unit operation in the metals production and processing chain have to be controlled, so as to achieve optimal performance of high product quality, low energy and materials consumption, and low environmental impact."
