Africa is ripe with opportunity for the mining industry. The continent has large, and relatively unexplored mineral deposits, and recent high economic growth rates have meaningfully improved the political, economic, and infrastructural environments. However, these opportunities are accompanied by significant risks, including resource nationalism, uncertain regulation, corruption, and continuing political instability (up to and including war). Forward-looking companies actively manage these risks by creating a sense of shared purpose with the countries and communities that own the resources, using tools such as stakeholder analysis, local narratives, scenario planning, and constituency engagement. They also measure socio-economic impact to insure the creation and demonstration of shared value.

The movement to reclaim abandoned mine sites has gained momentum as federal, state, and private organizations have increased their commitment and resources to tackle mutual, and often controversial, problems of health and safety. Numerous interorganizational agreements have been implemented to promote cooperation in the characterization of mine site hazards, development of mutually acceptable plans of remediation, and sharing of actual cleanup requirements. Working through these partnerships, the federal land management agencies have begun to focus on abandoned mine reclamation in selected, priority watersheds and other drainage basins. Although there are major difficulties to overcome, significant progress continues to be made.

The purpose of this research is to identify hazards associated with roof bolting and to make recommendations for procedural and equipment design changes to reduce those hazards. To that end, the project reviewed Literature on related research, collected and analyzed roof bolting injury data, normalized the injury data be exposure time to each activity and identified problem areas within the root bolting tasks. In addition, field data collection forms were prepared and mines selected for field work. In the field, observations were made of eighty (80) different roof bolting crews bolting one hundred fifty-five (155) place;, on forty (40) sections spread among nine (9) mines. Task analysis forms were used to record unsafe behavior or conditions for each crew and each place. Informal discussions were held with the mine's safety and training officer, the maintenance officer, one section foremen and, when possible, the observed crew, concerning the training and experience of the miners. Unsafe acts were categorized and related to the "Activity While Injured" categories developed during the accident analysis. For each of these categories one or more recommendations for corrective measure, machine modification, procedural change or job training were developed. The study produced over fifty (50) specific recommendations involving machine design, procedural, safety training and supervisional issues that would lead to reduced roof bolter injuries in the near term. The authors concluded, however, that only the development of truly hands off/remote bolting can eliminate or reduce to an absolute minimum the hazards to which the roof bolter is subjected.

Nickel laterites throughout the world are similar in their gross aspects, but vary significantly in detail. The deposits occur in two separate and distinct geologic settings --those formed over ultramafic rocks which were mechanically emplaced, and those formed over ultramafic rocks that were intruded as melts. The source of the primary nickel in the parent rock may occur both as ionic replacement in silicate lattices and as nickel sulfides. Factors controlling the degree of laterization and nickel enrichment are dependent upon the parent rock characteristics as well as chemical and climatic conditions. Two chemically and physically distinct zones (oxide and saprolite) are commonly present in the laterized rock, but one or the other may be extremely thin or absent. Cobalt and copper may be present in recoverable amounts. Geologic, geophysical and geochemical methods are all utilized in exploring for these deposits. These methods are compared, evaluated and illustrated in the paper. Drilling patterns and ore reserve calculations are also discussed. In contrast to many ore deposits, processing costs are much higher than mining costs. The most efficient processing method is directly dependent upon the chemical composition of the ore. This variation in the chemical and physical characteristics of nickel laterites requires a detailed test program of the metallurgical response to representative samples and blends of ore. Detailed laboratory and bench-scale metallurgical tests are necessary prior to a full scale pilot plant test.

THE property at which this work was done consists of a large deposit of potash salts occurring in massive beds of rock salt, overlain by 600 ft. of salt-impregnated shales and marls. It is in the Province of Cataluiia, Spain, about 45 miles from the railway station of Mauresa and about a mile south of Suria. In addition to sinking the shaft, the program of construction work laid out by the European owners (not Spaniards) included a single-track narrow-gage railroad from Mauresa to the mine; one large office building and several large shop buildings, all of brick and concrete with steel truss roofs; two extensive benches for the future recovery plant; and a large village of stone dwellings for employees. The pay-roll showed approximately 1200 to 1500 men employed. After two years' operation, ending early in the autumn of 1920, the shaft had been sunk 325 ft. and still had an equal distance to go to reach the potash; all tunnels for the railroad were done and the road-bed $0 per cent completed; only a little more than the foundations were completed for all the large buildings, and the excavations of the benches were about 75 per cent done-while only a fair start had been made upon the employees' village. This was the state of affairs when the European owners decided to offer this property under a one-year option to an American syndicate, providing that they agreed to carry on the entire building program and to sink the shaft as fast as was consistent with the quality of work which they demanded, for they wished the shaft to endure at least 200 years.

Component failures in the electrical control circuits of mining machines account for a large percentage of the total downtime of the machine, Once a failure has occurred it is always a tedious and usually a time-consuming task to locate the failed component. Moreover, the pressure to quickly locate the cause of a delay can lead to compromises in safety. Thus an onboard diagnostic system, essential for an automated machine, would be a very useful addition to existing machines. This report details U.S. Bureau of Mines development of a generic procedure for synthesizing diagnostic systems for electrical-control-circuit failures in mining machinery. A continuous mining machine is used as the testbed to illustrate the application of the developed methodology. Substantive differences among mining machine control circuits made it impossible to achieve a generic diagnostic system, but a generic approach for the synthesis of the diagnostic system was possible. As the research progressed, it became apparent that an algorithmic approach was better than an expert-system-based implementation. A prototype system was constructed and used to evaluate the diagnostic system. Prototype implementation issues are also examined.

The present method of shipping potash to the myriad of consumers is inefficient, not only because of the extreme and unpredictable nature of seasonal demand, but also because railway car turnaround times are very lengthy. The Floating Train system employs unit trains of potash operating from Saskatchewan mines to distribution warehouses located throughout the six corn-belt states of Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin , Illinois, Indiana and Ohio, transshipment points at Thunder Bay and the U.S. waterway network, and, where applicable , large consumers. These unit trains would "float", meaning that they would not originate at the same mine nor terminate at the same warehouse on each trip . They would " float " freely among the origins, destinations and participating railways. The potash would be shipped uniformly throughout the year and usually stored in warehouses located within the six states. It would be subsequently delivered to consumers within a 75-mile radius. Distribution warehouses and rolling stock would be provided by a new company, Potash Distribution Limited, consisting of major potash producers and the Canadian railways. Potash Distribution Limited would be responsible for the distribution of potash from the origin through the warehouses to the final consumer. The additional costs of providing warehouse space and outbound delivery will be offset by the reduction in both rail rates and "peaking" expenses.

METAFORA is a simulation model for determination and evaluation of strategies for operating loader/truck systems in mining. A specific version of METAFORA was used to evaluate the haulage system at Solider Mineral's Aitik mine in northern Sweden, one of the largest open pit mines in Europe with a production of about 11.5 Mtpy (about 34000 tpd) of copper are. A production level of 34065 tpd was estimated by simulation runs with METAFORA. Using METAFORA's dispatch rules (Fixed Dispatch, Maximize Trucks, and Maximize Loaders), the truck/shovel system in the Aitik mine was simulated for evaluating alternative dispatch control strategies. The Maximize Trucks rule gave about the same total production (ore + waste) as the Fixed Dispatch rule but a 9% higher ore production. The Maximize Loaders rule gave the lowest production. The marginal truck capacity decreases with increasing number of trucks serving the same loader due to increasing waiting times. In Aitik mine the low crusher capacity results in long dumping times. If the dumping time at the crusher could be halved, the ore production would increase by 14%. The paper indicates that the use of software like METAFORA can result in a substantial reduction of time, effort and cost in shovel/truck system design and evaluation.

I. INTRODUCTION. DURING the past 50 years the attention of mining-men has been turned to Africa, and within the past decade prospecting-expeditions sent into Central Africa have resulted in the opening-up of several mines. Having recently spent two years in the Belgian Congo for the Société Internationale Forestiere et Miniere du Congo, it is our purpose to outline briefly the mining-conditions in that part of Central Africa. Before it became, in 1908, a Belgian colony, this region was known as the Congo Free State. II. LOCATION AND AREA. The Belgian Congo lies in southwestern Central Africa, west of the continental divide, is illustrated in Fig. 1. It has a coastline of but 20 miles on the Atlantic, but widens rapidly eastward to points 5° north and 14° south of the equator. Its area is 908,000 sq. miles, which is almost one-quarter that of the United States and Alaska, or more than one and one-half times that of Alaska. Stated in other terms, its area is nearly one-third that of the United States, exclusive of Alaska and the insular possessions, or more than that of all the United States east of the Mississippi river. THE annual dinner-dance was held in the large ball room of the Commodore hotel Wednesday evening. A total of 577 were seated at the dinner, over which President Eavenson presided as chairman and toastmaster. In introducing George C. Stone, the James Douglas Medalist, W. R. Ingalls outlined the former's association with the zinc industry. He said, in part In designing and building Palmerton, Stone erected a metallurgical monument and won the title of chief engineer of the New Jersey Zinc Co., with transferal to its New York office in 1900. There lie held forth in dignity, efficiency, and with appreciation until his retirement from active service in 1929. After a few years lie was diverted from the position of chief engineer for his company to the superior one of chief metallurgist and that gave to Stone his next big chance.... This was the conception of a research department and the ability to persuade his directors to adopt it. I shall not pretend to summarize the great things that afterward developed. I shall mention only the institution of the manufacture of lithopone in this country, the charging of the Wetherill furnace with briquets, the mechanicalization of the Wetherills, the accomplishment of continuous distilling, and most recently the introduction of reflux-refining.

"In the last decade Afitex developed the Draintube™ geocomposite, which provides simultaneous drainage and waterproofing functions. This new type of drain tubes planar geocomposites (DTPG) differs from other geocomposites as the drainage core is composed of multiple corrugated and perforated pipes instead of biaxial or triaxial nets. High-angle in-pit conveying is an idea that is being seriously studied by a number of important mining companies in North America. Its application in coal, iron ore, and copper mining is expected to reduce mine operating costs considerably compared with the conventional discontinuous methods, such as truck haulage, which are fuel, labor, and maintenance intensive. Therefore, a mine introducing high-angle in-pit conveyors will gain a competitive advantage over mines which continue to use conventional haulage. While the capital outlay for in-pit conveyor systems obviously varies depending on pit depth, the angle of incline, and the capacity required, it generally will not exceed that of truck haulage when all Factors are taken into consideration. These factors include the cost of excavation, as measured in relation to the volume of minerals mined, the cost of building truck ramps and roads, and the capital outlay for the trucks and maintenance facilities. In many cases, in Fact, the capital outlay will be less than for truck haulage. This cost advantage will best be realized by new mines, whereas in existing producing mines the switch from truck haulage may involve the abandonment of a substantial capital asset.

In the grand scheme of things, the 9.5-t (21,000-lb) shipment of molybdenum concentrate that left Freeport-McMoRan?s Climax Mine site on May 10, 2012 was not unlike the thousands of others that have been hauled away from the site during the last century, except for the fact that this shipment marked the official rebirth of one of America?s greatest mines. For nearly two decades, 17 years to be exact, there was no production from the mine that was once the largest underground mine in the world and was so important to the Allies? effort during World War II that it was assigned the highest priority of any mine in the United States by the War Production Board. The economic recession in 1980 put an end to the mine?s success, and the Great Recession of 2008 nearly derailed the mine again. But, like the nearby town of Leadville, CO, the mine survived thanks to an investment of more than $700 million by Climax Molybdenum Co., a Freeport-McMoRan company, to bring the Climax Mine back into production.

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR), with the assistance of cooperating underground mining operations and state agencies, has conducted research exploring devices and technologies that could be used to assist miners navigating through smoke and dust resulting from a fire or explosion. Recent events in mines confirm that smoke and dust can enter and contaminate mine escapeways, creating an atmosphere with severely reduced visibility. This reduced visibility results in substantially increased escape times, possible disorientation or confusion, and increased stress levels, and may prevent evacuation altogether. Tools or devices that assist miners in navigating through smoke-filled areas void of lifelines could make the difference in successful escape from the mine. This paper presents the results of OMSHR research to identify and evaluate tools and devices that could provide meaningful information to evacuating miners in areas with limited visibility and without the benefit of a lifeline.

In this the available information friction factors and leakage report, on characteristics are reviewed and summarized. The use of Penn State Mine Ventilation Simulator (Volumes II and III of the Final Report) to analyze the sensitivity of the ventilation system to the changes in leakage and friction factors is discussed with examples. In simple ventilation systems, the results of changes in leakage and friction factors can be easily solved and explained by the laws of air-flow. In complex systems, with fixed quantity branches and multiple sections, the effect of changes in leakage and friction factors cannot be generalized. This study points out the importance of good input data for obtaining reliable information from computer analyses and demonstrates the application of simulators to analyze the effectiveness of ventilation systems. An extensive bibliography on friction factors, leakage characteristics and ventilation economics is included.

ALTHOUGH Kennecott's orebody has long been outlined, it is still necessary to define further its limits. This mine, long an advocate of churn drill methods, recently supplemented its practice by using a diamond drill. So far, the diamond drill holes have been along the main canyon floor which traverses the mine area. This zone, highly fractured, is cut by numerous friable quartz veinlets encountered within the porphyry. These veinlets, formed by filling contracted porphyry fractures with hot, siliceous, mineral-bearing solutions, are often more highly mineralized than adjacent porphyry. They pulverize on contact, yielding only slight amounts of core.

According to the literature, material transportation represents 50 per cent of the operating costs for an open pit mine. In this context, this paper proposes a multistage approach for dynamic truck dispatching in real open pit mine environments, implemented in the commercial package SmartMine®, marketed by Devex SA. The first stage of this approach defines the optimal number of trucks that maximises the tonnage production by means of a robust linear programming model, which considers the operational constraints of a real mining process. The second stage uses a dynamic dispatching heuristic joining computational simulation and multicriterion optimisation techniques for decision making for truck dispatching. Another relevant contribution of this work is the publication of realistic instances collected from a dispatching system managing an iron mine, containing information about the hauling and loading fleet, the equipment situation when the working shift starts, cycle times, the time line of special occurrences (such as equipment stoppages and loading equipment reallocation in order to satisfy the mine planning) and the tonnage produced. These instances were generated with the purpose of submitting the method to the test of a real situation that considers the uncertainties existing in the process studied. The proposed approach was validated by means of a discrete event simulation model applied to the previously designated instances. Using this multistage approach as a mechanism for dispatch decision making, it is shown that the haulage fleet productivity increased when compared with the real values reported from the instances. These results are important because they show that the proposed approach generates efficient dispatch decisions for trucks operating in a real environment, reducing operating costs, increasing production and making the mine more competitive.

THE making of courses of study and curricula has long held first place as the favorite pastime of educators. As a game, this activity is as fascinating to some as golf or bridge, 'and the golfer's hope of a low score is matched by the teacher's ambition to some day evolve a sequence of studies that shall prove the ideal preparation for a life of maximum service and, profit. There are few in, this gathering who have not tried their skill at this game and still fewer are those who have been long satisfied by the product of their efforts. A curriculum is hardly printed in the college catalog before conditions arise which seem to make changes desirable, and strong will power is needed to maintain the program long enough to give it a fair trial. Metallurgical curricula are not less subject to change than others, 'and; indeed they have seemed, at times, to change more rapidly than other curricula because of the changing 'needs of the industries and the demand that the graduate be trained to meet the new conditions. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has established a wire rope research laboratory to examine the factors that affect the life of wire rope. A 2-in-diameter 6x25 fiber core rope was degraded on a bending fatigue machine. This was the first in a series of tests on rope of this construction and size. Baseline testing at the laboratory was reported in an earlier publication. Tensile and nondestructive tests were performed on samples of the rope to determine the relationship between rope deterioration and rope breaking strength. The tests indicated that as a wire rope nears the end of its useful life, deterioration and the consequent loss of rope strength increase at an accelerated rate.
