This study undertook the development and implementation of a methodology for estimating the impact of coal seam interaction on the eastern bituminous underground reserve base as published in USBM Information Circular 8655. The effects of previous mining in multiple coal seam areas on currently mined and reserve seams are predicted as a percentage coal loss by an engineering assessment model called the Coal Loss Calculation Model. The model utilizes twelve input variables easily derivable from mine maps or other existing data sources and calculates the effects of subsidence and high-stress due to remnant pillars in the previously mined seam. Extensive literature review resulted in the identification, definition, and quantification of the critical variables of seam interaction. Export opinion surveys were made of mining experts, MESA mine inspectors, and coal mine operators. Statistical analysis was used to establish the redundancy of the critical variables and to develop a total coal loss prediction algorithm. A regional analysis resulted in the production of a series of thematic maps on coal characteristics and distribution. A derivative map showing the areas of commonality within the eastern bituminous coal region served as the basis for implementation of the coal loss calculation model. The model was developed and tested using data from four coal mines in western Pennsylvania and southern West Virginia.

WearApp provides expertise for assessing the degradation of removable screening media panels on vibrating screens right in a user’s pocket. Through the WearApp application, users can simply take a picture of a panel using their mobile, enter some basic information and have the application assess the wear to provide a recommendation for whether the panel needs to be replaced. Where traditional mechanisms for assessing panel wear only measure a few points across the panel face and rely on having personnel with specialised knowledge available to perform the assessment, WearApp uses deep learning models to analyse the entire panel face and support the user to make an informed decision. The application works through analysing a panel image and using a model to automatically detect the corners of the panel. Given the known dimensions of the panel, this enables the application to calibrate the pixel size against a known reference. A second set of models then detect the apertures and measure their dimensions. With the aperture dimensions defined the application assesses the wear of the panel through referencing a stored 3D model of the aperture. Finally, the data from each aperture is collated and the wear of the entire panel face defined. Since WearApp performs measurement of the entire panel face, it also allows the user to perform a more detailed analysis of the panel’s wear profile. Where typically, the panel wear is only measured in a few locations, WearApp’s analysis enables users to visualise the panel wear across the entire panel face, identifying areas of high wear that could be leading to premature panel replacement. Additionally, because the entire panel face is measured the change in screening efficiency can be calculated accurately for the worn panel, even taking into account the impact of aperture pegging by small rocks.

Oil shale, a long-considered potential source of motor fuel in the United States, is found over an extensive area in the Green River formation in Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming.4/ Oil has been retorted commercially from shale in Scotland for many years,5/ and work done by the Bureau of Mines and other investigators has shown that it is technically feasible to extract oil from American shales.6/ By refining, the shale oil may be converted into marketable products similar to those manufactured from crude petroleum. The present paper, which was finished in 1936, discusses methods that would be adaptable to mining certain American shales, and the treatment applies specifically to conditions iii the Green River formation on Naval

DESPITE the fact that its membership is spread over every continent of the globe, the Petroleum Division was able to report a very substantial attendance at its meetings. Careful planning on the part of its chairman, J. B. Urnpleby, and his associates resulted in the presentation of a program that was of timely interest -and led to discussions that will unquestionably prove to be of major value to the petroleum engineer and to the oil industry in general. Scheduling of meetings so as to avoid all conflicts made it possible to obtain a higher average attendance at the several sessions* than in previous years, and gave everyone a chance to hear all of the papers that he was interested in. The chairmen of the various meetings are to be congratulated especially for their skill in handling them so that at .no time was there the least indication of lagging interest.

"""The north coast of the St. Lawrence River will be the scene of an industrial development during the coming decades"". The facts which underlie this statement are the occurrences of iron and titanium ore, the abundance of hydro-power and the availability of deep-water ports in this region. Havre St-Pierre, Sept-Iles, Port Cartier and Baie Corneau already exist as major ports and urban centers. The huge quartz deposit at Baie Comeau will be a decisive contributing factor in the development of a metallurgical plant in this area. Due to its purity, it lends itself, first of all, to the manufacture of glass of different kinds, being comparable to the quartz sands now used by the plate glass and glass container industries in the Montreal area, Moncton, N.B., Trois-Rivieres and - in the future - at Bécancour, Quebec. However, its high quality will also make it possible to use it as one of the main basic materials for the production of silicon carbide and ferrosilicon, and as a flux in metallurgical processes. It is intended, in this report, to offer conclusive proof of the economical importance of this large quartz deposit by presenting the results of the studies made to date."

LESS than a decade ago the consumption of coal in Alaska was practically limited to the salmon canneries and the few lode-mines and settlements along the Pacific coast of the Ter¬ritory. The sparse population of the interior depended on the forests, that of the shores of Bering Sea and the Arctic Ocean on driftwood for fuel. All this has changed. The thousands who have sought and mined gold on the Seward peninsula since 1898 have much impoverished the long-accumulated supply of driftwood, and at the same time the constantly increasing demand for fuel, on the part of the placer-camps and steamers, has resulted in heavy inroads being made on the accessible timber of the Yukon and its tributaries. While on the one hand the immediately available store of wood has decreased, on the other the consumption of fuel because of the rapid expansion of the mining and fishery industries and the attendant growth of population has much increased. Alaska, therefore, offers a constantly growing market for coal and other fuels. As the local coal-production has been insignificant, the demand has been met by importations from Washington, British Columbia, and even from Pennsylvania and Australia. Fuel-Consumption Mr. D. H. Jarvis, Collector for Alaska, has kept systematic records of the trade of the Territory since 1903. The statistics of the coal-importations of the past two years are shown in Table I. If data were available for a longer period of years, the increase of coal-importations would be much more striking.

The Department of Mines as at present constituted has evolved from the organization which came into existence following the passage of the Geology and Mines Act by the Dominion Parliament in 1907. At the outset, it may be said that it is not a function of the Department of Mines, nor of any of its branches, to administer the mining rights vested in the Crown. The title to Crown lands in the provinces of Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, Quebec, Ontario, and British Columbia ( with the exception of certain specified areas, such as Indian Reserves, Ordnance Lands, the Railway Belt of British Columbia, and the Peace River Black) is vested in the respective provincial governments ; the title to Crown Lands in the provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta, the Yukon and Northwest Territories, and in the Canadian Arctic, is vested in the Dominion Government, and matters pertaining thereto are (with a few exceptions) administered by the Department of the Interior, Ottawa. Nor are statistics of mineral production at present collected and published by the Department of Mines. This function did belong to the Geological Survey from 1886 to 1906, and to the Mines Branch from 1907 to 1920; but commencing with 192l this duty was transferred to the Dominion Bureau of Statistics, consequent upon the decision of Government to place the collection of all statistics under the direction of one officer.

Microcomputer technology has begun to revolutionize petroleum engineering. Petroleum engineers' use of relatively inexpensive personal computers (PC's) is likely to continue expanding rapidly. Since 1982 SPE's Microcomputer Applications Committee has developed a Society-wide users group, a bi-monthly newsletter (MICROCOMP NEWS), an SPE Short Course, a hardware and software distribution program, and a world wide electronic network (SPE NET). The purpose of this paper is to share SPE's experience in creating a dynamic program for meeting the individual member's need in the application of microcomputers to petroleum engineering. My hope is that this will encourage other engineering and scientific organizations to provide similar programs for their members.

At the request of the Idaho Congressional Delegation, the U.S. Bureau of Mines Western Field Operations Center investigated the mineral resources of the 140,000-acre Red Mountain roadless area, located northeast of Lowman, in central Idaho. The area includes U.S. Forest Service Red Mountain RARE II area (4-063). The highly mineralized road less area is underlain mainly by granitic rocks which are transected by a northeast-trending fault system. Associated with the granitic rocks and fault system are gold and black sand mineral resources. At least 1,395 ounces of gold and 858 ounces of silver have been recovered from six lode and placer mines within the roadless area. A total of 525 tons of columbium-tantalum, 2,049 tons of euxenite, 83.5 tons of columbite, and 54,862 tons of ilmenite concentrates have been produced from a nearby black sand mineral placer. Mine workings and facilities in the roadless area consist of two dismantled mills, 15 open and caved underground excavations totaling about 2,900 ft of workings, seven large pits and quarries, over 166 smaller dozer-and hand-dug prospect pits and trenches, and in excess of 66 drill holes. The mineralized sites in the roadless area are covered by about 690 current (1992) mining claims. About 130 individuals are holding the claims. Also within the roadless area are four patented lode mining claims. Twenty-five of the 54 mineralized sites identified during the study of the roadless area have, or likely have, mineral resources. One has gold and three have black sand mineral resources that are marginal or subeconomic. There also are two hot springs with thermal water resources, some veins that could be sources of decorative quartz, and dimension stone which was quarried in the past and could be again.

A regional investigation to find large supplies of potable ground water was carried out at elevations exceeding 12,000 feet above sea level on the Bolivian Altiplano. The program marked the first application of modern ground water search and development technology in the region, and ended a history of unsuccessful exploration efforts to locate important supplies of fresh water from underground sources. Oruro, a population center of 90,000 inhabitants, and its primary supporting industry - mining, both derived major direct benefit from the results of this program.

I find that during the short time I have been in this district, the majority of boilers are, and have been, receiving very bad usage owing to the difficulties which they have to contend against, viz., oil and bad water. Oil on the heating surface of a boiler is of a highly dangerous nature inasmuch as it allows the surface to become overheated, owing to the water not coming into direct contact with the plates, and it naturally follows that when the crown sheets of a flue or firebox become overheated, you lose a considerable amount of the strength of the plate, and the flue or crown comes down. Referring to the oil question, I find that too much care cannot or exercised on the part of engine drivers in order to minimise as much as possible the internal lubrication of the various engines under their control. For I consider that it is here that the most of the trouble is caused. My reasons for stating such to be the case, are:-That the majority of enginedrivers before coming to this field have been used to driving engines that have been exhausting into the atmosphere, and probably they have been taught that it is far better to use a little extra lubrication than to have a hot bearing. So far so good. But one thing that must not be overlooked is that on these fields the conditions are altered in this respect, as the majority of engines in this district are not exhausting into the atmosphere, but are condensing their exhaust steam and using the water so condensed for feed purposes.

His first product, introduced in 1949, was the TK10, a mobile crane that, at the time, was a groundbreaking innovation to the heavy construction industry. From there, the company began its growth into a world-leading heavy equipment manufacturer that always relied on innovation.In October, Liebherr gathered a group of mining and construction magazine editors in Leoben, Austria to take a look at the company’s latest addition to the global mining and construction markets. On the mining side, Liebherr provided a demonstration of its T-236 100-t (110-st) haul truck and the PR- 766 50-st (55-st) crawler tractor. The one-day demonstration took place at the Erzberg iron mine near Leoben, where both machines are being proven.The Erzberg Mine, operated by VA Ersberg, has been in operation for about 1,300 years and is said to be Europe’s largest surface mine. It employs about 230 people and mines about 12 Mt/a (13,200 million stpy) of ore, producing about 3 Mt/a (3.3 million stpy) of fine-grained iron ore.T-236 rigid-frame truckThe new T-236 rigid-frame dump truck, with a diesel electric drive system, is Liebherr’s entry into the 100-t (110-st) class and is the first in this class with a four-corner, oilimmersed braking system. The haul truck was first introduced during the 2016 MinExpo in Las Vegas, NV. The unit has since successfully completed its testing phase and is currently in its first field operation trials at the Erzberg iron mine in Austria."

This Technical Memorandum Report is a collection of three working memoranda, prepared during the course of our work for the bureau of Mines and hound together for convenient reference. These working memoranda present preliminary performance estimates, for baseband voice and narrowband through-the-earth electromagnetic communications systems of principal interest to the Bureau, for operational/emergency mine communications. The calculations were prepared to obtain early indications of the feasibility and governing parameters of such communications systems. They are based on limited, but pertinent, coal mine electromagnetic noise data acquired to-date by Bureau of Mines contractors; and of theoretical signal-attenuation characteristics for two transmitter antenna types of present interest to the Bureau. The memoranda examine the cases of baseband voice and narrowband communications for uplink and downlink transmissions, for frequencies up to 3kHz. Downlink transmissions are via a horizontal wire antenna, up-link transmissions via a vertical-axis loop antenna, for typical mine depths of 300, b00, and 1000 feet. Representative coal-mine overburden conductivities of 10-2 mhos/meter (moderate and common) and 10-1 mhos/meter (high) were used; 10-2 for voice and narrowband, 10-1 for narrowband only. Examples of high, moderate, and low; surface and subsurface; harmonic and broadband-impulsive noise conditions were taken from NBS and Westinghouse (WGL) mine noise data, together with examples of high- and low-levels of ELF atmospheric noise taken from M.I.T. Lincoln Laboratory data.

Within the mining industry there is a growing trend of placing inexperienced technical people into positions of responsibility beyond their readiness. Their responsibilities often include providing the fundamental basis for decision-making: the resource model or even the daily grade control estimates. Whilst software continues to make the processes more accessible, the thinking and rationale for selecting parameters still requires control rather than auto-piloting. Operators run these systems in virtual isolation, and have limited immediate access to experts. Beyond the stress of the professional burden are the increased risks to the mining operations and overall project success.While many experienced experts recall being thrown in the deep end, the relative isolation from experts coupled with the gravity of professional burden before readiness, is less familiar. Many recall in intimate detail the experts who gave them direction, assisted them along the way and even helped them claw out of inadvertent mistakes. Experienced professionals all have a responsibility to enable capability across the generations, to ease the burden and to mitigate the risks.This paper provides an outline of how mentoring as an on-the-job professional development process can be structured to more fully enable success of a mentoring program. The past 100 years the mining industry can be characterised by a focus on increasing financial returns often to the detriment of social, human, manufactured and environmental capitals. Despite the sustainable development principles promoted by the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM), the Equator Principles and the African Mining Vision, which should have enhanced project promoters’ ‘licence to operate’ within a host community or nation, the industry has often failed to integrate proven innovations and best practices that enhance sustainability outcomes for mineral resource projects. This failure has led to delays, the abandonment of projects, with value destroyed for promoters, governments, host community and investors.The paper will outline the application of proven innovations, Enterprise Optimisation (EO), and Sustainable Operations (SUSOP®), during the pre-feasibility phase of a project. By determining the value of each capital before and after the application of proven innovations, the presentation will outline how and where value can be created across all five capitals over the life of a project or operation.The paper will demonstrate how the application of proven innovations significantly transforms the value-proposition of a mineral resource project or operation by generating additional value across all of the five capitals, reducing project risk, thus generating value for all stakeholders.CITATION:Jones, M, 2015. Cooling of coal mines in the Bowen Basin, characterised by steep geothermal gradient, is presently achieved mostly through rental surface bulk air cooling in summer months. This paper argues that future mines will be required to focus their cooling resources more intensively to manage a challenging thermal environment where virgin coal temperatures of over 50¦C at a depth of 500 m are expected. Currently, mine cooling systems are employed to maintain the wet bulb temperatures (WBT) to below 27¦C at which point the risks of heat stroke or other heat-related issues are manageable. The capacities of these systems are in the range of 6 MWR to 10 MWR. The relationship between high working temperature environments and injury frequency rates is well established. Therefore, provision of appropriate cooling strategies and understanding their optimum performance and suitability are important to Australian coal mines of the future. This paper evaluates the underground temperature profiles of deep, gassy coal mines with propensity for spontaneous combustion and proposes the long-term cooling pathways to effectively manage thermal hazards. Thermodynamic modelling is performed on a longwall face and includes air leakage effects from goaf streams at various locations along the longwall face. The strategy summarises the application of underground bulk air cooling, chilled water sprays on the shearer and the resulting temperature profiles. Considering the new mining projects planned for the Bowen Basin region, a review of implementable cooling strategies such as mid-gate mobile bulk air coolers (BACs), spot coolers, underground bulk air cooling and the use of chilled water to enhance the positional efficiency of cooling plants, are discussed in this paper. The question of geophysical prospecting is one that is beginning to occupy a pre-eminent place in the minds of those actively concerned in the discovery and exploitation of ore deposits. This is in marked contrast to the reception accorded such ideas when the Junior author, six and a half years ago, began introducing electrical prospectii1g to the mining fraternity on this continent. Happily, the mention of geophysics no longer evokes the sceptical and pitying smiles that it did in those days. A little reflection will show that modern geophysical methods are merely a logical development from pre-existing technique. In the study of geological problems, is it not logical to use all possible physical properties of matter? The study of crystal form and cleavage, the examination of thin sections of minerals by means of polarized light or ordinary light, in fact, utilize physical properties of minerals for the benefit of the geologist. These are, of course, laboratory methods, and the extension of the study of similar properties into field work was inevitable. This began with the magnetometric surveys, used as early as 1760 in New Jersey to locate iron ores. Eighty-four years later, John Locke's work in the United States resulted in pointing out relationships between the terrestrial magnetic field and main tectonic features of the earth's crust.

The recent introduction of small coal jigs in Alabama to meet the needs of truck - mine operators for cheap and economical cleaning equipment marks another step in Alabama's pioneering record in the mechanical cleaning and preparation of coal . During the past 4 or 5 years a number of these small jigs , with capacity of 5 to 10 tons per hour , have been installed at Alabama truck mines and at a few truck mines in Illinois , Tennessee , and Pennsylvania . Most of the installations have been at mines that specialize in the production of domestic , stoker coal . This report describes three models of small jigs and includes performance data obtained recently on one of the models by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior , in cooperation with the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa , Ala . , for the purpose of comparing it with fullsize jigs on a performance basis . With literally hundreds of truck mines now in operation throughout the country , it has been assumed in preparing this report that there is widespread interest in the availability of small - scale inexpensive preparation equipment for use at such mines in the production of steam and domestic coal and in some instances coal for manufacture of coke . Practically none of the coal from Alabama truck mines is scld to coke - oven plants ; but in some sections of the country truck mines supply a considerable amount of coking coal, and the use of small, inexpensive washers at some of them might be very advantageous during the present war emergency from the standpoint of increasing pig - iron production through improvements in coke quality .

"Sand is one of the most useful and, fortunately, one of the most common mineral commodities. By far the largest proportion of the production is used in construction, including all forms of building, concrete and paving, sand for this purpose is produced in every State in appreciable amounts. Excluding send used for railroad ballast, molding sand stands not in tonnage produced, followed by glass sand.Special sands. In addition to the above, many grades of sands, with special characteristics, are used in industrial processes, and may be classed in a group as ""special sends"". This includes filter sand, sand blast sand, engine sand, abrasive send, fire or furnace send, special flooring sand, roofing sand used as a finish for prepared roofings and pottery placing sand sand blast and filter sand have been discussed in previous reports.Very few send companies depend upon the production of any one of these grades, as their source of revenue. They are generally especially prepared from the bank run of sand by different methods of screening or washing, or may, in some instances, be by-products from the production of ether grades. Many companies not now producing them might be able to supply local demands by a slight addition to their plant. In nearly all cases, they command a better price than the usual grades of building sand.Definitions and Properties.Engine sand, or traction sand, as it is sometimes called, is used to prevent the slipping of the driving wheels of locomotives, or other self-propelled vehicles, on wet or slippery rails. Its greatest use is, of course, for railroad locomotives, but street cars use considerable amounts and mine locomotives require its use. As the send must be very dry when used, most consumers have their can drying equipment, so it is often shipped damp, with its natural water content on what resulting from washing by the producer."
